  • Toronto fans were expecting the Curiosa announcement on Edge 102.1 today, but it didn't happen:

I'm not giving up, just yet! *crosses fingers* "

  • New Robert interview:
  • "Today on Italian newspaper "Repubblica" there is an interview with Robert:

It's 25 years that one imagines him as an artist that lives in the dark, tortured by amlethic doubts, tormented by unconfessed and unconfessable loves. Robert Smith, made his group, The Cure, the icon of "darkgeneration", the obscure generation, cloning a myriad of creatures all around the world that comb their hair like him, dress like him, listen only to what he listens. Three years far from the scenes haven't changed him. the same crispy hair falling on his eyes, the same lipstick ruining his lips, the usual necklace on the hairy chest deformed by follicolitis, a natural tendency to fatness that (this one too) his fans imitate with joy. And a new record coming, "The Cure", in stores from june 25th that the italian audience will preview in the two live apparitions at Imola's Heineken Jammin' Festival and Neapolis Festival, respectively 19th and 20th of june. He waits for us in the brightest of the hotel rooms, chosen carefully among the most anonymous around Gatewick. Light does not burn his skin, as he pretended for years, and neither irritates his iris, very little, green, that investigates like a small camera scrutinizing the interlocutor to grasp all his secrets in a few moments. Behind the mask of the eternal young anti-star, Smith is 46, lives in the British countryside, south of London, has a wife and no children. "It was a choice", he says, "we've got 25 nephews running around, it's more than enough to satisfy our natural parental needs. It may be egoistic, but the idea of fathering stil makes me feel unease".

Q1: what you have done in these last years?

A1: Thinking to myself and trying so hard to make me appreciate my artist work. for all my life i said to myself, I don't want to be 40 years old and suddenly find out that this work is like any other work. so I emerge from hiding just when I have the real inspiration without the obsession to wake up in the morning and say "oh no, I am still the Cure singer..."

Q2: have you find a different world compared to 2000 world when you composed Bloodflowers

A2: I don't think. The world is always the same, but the media are more aggressive and catastrophist, so the people perception of the world is more different. This idea of the black cloud that threaten the world is a convenient invention to produce fear because the fear produce audience. this is not my point of view. today I have less fear as much as two years ago. I refuse to accept this theory that the whole world live in terror, that around every corner there is a kamikaze ready to explode. As if the fate of the humans wouldn’t be the death. This is the greatest human fear, the fear of all the fears, that erase every other fear. In my humble opinion my country, Great Britain is going downhill along with all the Western world, but this is another matter. Talking about media I’d like to emphasize like the tabloid and television created the celebrity obsession, the idea that the celebrity is the more sublime conquest that the man can reach. If you are famous then you can do anything and your actions will be morally clear of blame. That’s what galls me, when my nephews tell me “what a blast your life!” not for what I do, but only because I am famous.

Q3: do you feel embarrassed for the millions of Robert Smith clones that you created?

A3: when I was young I have done something similar. Wearing a football team T-shirt is the same process: it suggests a sense of belonging. The dress and the make-up serve to say I belong to this tribe. It is in the human nature.

Q4: do you belong to a tribe in the past?

A4: Yes, I belong to David Bowie tribe. I was 14 when the Ziggy Stardust case exploded. I was too young, but I had an insane passion for Station to Station, that black and white tour with the projection of En chien andalou of Luis Bunuel. Bowie, Hendrix and George Best were my idols. Then it was Sex Pistols turn: the revolution for me and for my tastes in music.

    Q5: do you watch TV?

A5: twice every week. I watch NYPD Blue and 24 on Fox. That’s all.

A breathless man with a overnight bag come into the room. He is late. He bustles about the combination and extracts from the bag a copy of the new record that comes directly from USA.

“I still have to listen the final copy” Robert says.

The music fills the room. The sun is setting, the atmosphere is right. On the thick and violent musical progression of the first song “Lost”, Robert sing in a painful crescendo: “ I can’t find myself, I can’t find myself, I’ve got lost , someone give me a hand”

  • Reuters has more about The Cure possibly copying Prince's album giveaway scheme. Doesn't this just encourage fans to NOT buy the album when released, and simply download it until they get their "free" copy at the show?
  • (Thanks Pirat)

Update: The Cure will NOT be copying this gimmick.

  • Curespotting:

" 1.) In the book Rock Fashion by Joshua Sims Robert Smith is mentioned two times: 1.)Make-up: (picture caption) "Robert Smith of the Cure, long-time exponent of Goth and well-known for his attachment to red lipstick, always applied slightly skewed" "Goths readily emulated the likes of Siouxsie Sioux and Robert Smith of The Cure by wearing shapeless black sweaters, violently back-combing their hair abd finally adding a pack of powder a slash of red lipstick (notable Reddest by Jane, Smith's lipstick brand of choice, seemingly applied blindfold." 2.)Hair: (picture caption) "Back-combed and hair-sprayed, the Goth hair of Robert Smith of The Cure." "Meanwhile, Goth's, among them The Cure's Robert Smith, self-cut, back-combed and black-dyed into a gracity-defying puff-ball without frontiers (when Smith cut it all off in 1986 the reaction of the MTV generation was almost comparable to that generated by Elvis' army cut)...."

2.) In Q Magazine's 50 years of Rock, The Cure has a two-page layout, from when Lol was still with them.

3.) In this month's Spin magazine (Morrisey on the cover), there is a small mention of the Coachella festival, with a picture of Robert.

    and finally,

4.) They are airing commercials for the Move festival (Cure summer show in England) with "In Between Days" playing in the background."

  • After many requests and the lack of other options, I have given in and will revive the Cure Ticket Alert mailing list. For those of you who weren't here for the Dream Tour, this is a private mailing list I set up to send out ticket alerts (pre-sale info, on sale dates, etc) as soon as I get the info. All info will still be posted here, but this saves you the trouble of checking COF every hour to see if there's any ticket info yet. Unlike the Dream Tour alerts, which were an "all in one" alert, I'm breaking it up into individual lists for each city on the Curiosa tour this time.
  • So if you would like to be included, just e-mail me and let me know which city or cities you want the info for, and I'll add you to the list.

  • The Pepsi Smash links are now working, so click on them to see a 30 second clip of The Cure doing 'TEOTW' at HFStival. PS will also be showing 2 more songs (probably 'Lovesong' and 'Lullaby'). I'm very surprised that they're going to give The Cure that much time.

  • 'TEOTW' gets rated on the Andrew Collins show on BBC6:
  • "Just wanted to let you know that people can listen to the excellent "Roundtable" on BBC 6 Music radio where they review TEOTW. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/presenters/andrew_collins/roundtable.shtml)

Hosted by fellow Cure fan, Andrew Collins, this week he is joined by guests Miles Hunt (of The Wonderstuff), music journalist David Quantick, and fellow BBC 6 Music presenter Clare McDonnell."

The single gets a good grade, but a few harsh comments about the band. Not as harsh as their comments about Morrissey though. : ) And don't believe them, the new Moz album is surprisingly good.

    (Thanks Trevor)

  • Also on the BBC6 Roundtable show, Andrew says 'TEOTW' will be out in the UK on July 12th.

  • HMV Japan is listing 'The Cure' for a June 25th release date.

  • Don't worry about the "missing" tracks, they'll all find their way out in one form or another. You WILL be buying the vinyl version (which should include 15 tracks!). I just hope everyone still has a turntable. : )

  • Some tv/radio appearances are on the schedule for June:
  • Mon 21st June Milan, Italy (TV Studio)

Thu 24th June Cologne, Germany (TV Studi Koln)

Mon 28th June Paris, France (Paris Radio)

That's all I know for now.

  • Some more thoughts on the new album:
  • "yesterday I went to Universal/Polydor in Paris to listen to the new album of the Cure... I spent 2 hours there and listened 2 times to the complete album. I have a lot of information about it... but my english isn't well enough to explain what i felt when i was listening. All i can say it's that album looks like Disintegration.

On the 12 songs that will be in the album on 29 june, 11 have a distortion guitar. The last one, going nowhere, is the only song made with a folk guitar. It's also one of the more sad songs of the album. The words are so sensitive... Robert's voice is so desperate... It's really a very nice song.

The opening song, Lost, is incredible. The sound is just getting lounder and lounder during all the song, from the first second, to the last one. Robert starts to sing normally and finish the song by yelling, like he was so angry!... wow ! what an awesome song !

The longest song of the album, The Promise, is AWESOME ! It reminds me of Disintegration (as long as Disintegration), a lot of heavy drums, nice voice and nice words... some quiet moment, then few seconds next, lounds sounds... that's also a great song.

On the whole, the drums during most of the songs sounds like Closedown (from Disintegration). Not a binary sounds, but a lot of toms sounds... and long intros.

That's one of the best album of the Cure. Could be the "heavy" sequel of Disintegration... his father in law : new producer, new sounds, but always the Cure touch !!!"

Naturally, I wrote back and asked about the lyrics, whether it was rock or pop, etc. :

"I took a lot of notes during the sessions. But all my notes are in my office. Sorry ! I'll email a longer "review" on tuesday.

All i can say, is that the songs sound rock, execpt maybe Never. For me, it's the least interesting song of the album.

Some songs sounds like SECRETS, but with a distortion 2nd guitar. Another one, sounds like THE KISS (with wah wah guitar solo)...

I'll send you more informations on tuesday.

About the lyrics, as my english isn't very good, I can't tell you anything about them... except Going Nowhere, very easy to understand. Just a dozen of sentences... sad lyrics, very powerfull. I was feeling so sad at the end of this song ! Like i was starting to cry. Really !

All i can say about the lyrics is the way Roberts sang them. Very implicated (is that correct ?) in all the songs. Really angry, yelling, shouting like at the end of the Disintegration song..."

Ok, but how does it compare to the 3 previous albums (BF, WMS, Wish):

"Better than Wish and WMS : it's a non commercial album !!!

    Different from Bloodflowers...

As i told you, could be the sequel to Disintegration...but with heavy guitars..."

    Sounds good to me.

    (Thanks Nicolas)

  • Rock.com already has tickets on sale for the Curiosa show in Tennessee. Also have many tickets for the Columbia, Md. show. And you wonder why it's so hard to get decent seats?

  • Lorely ads airing on BigFM:
  • "BigFM (http://www.bigfm.de) - a south-german radio station - is presenting the Cure Concert at Loreley and is running about four or five 1-minute adverts per day to promote it. Nothing special, though - Just the announcement and a Mix of a few Greatest Hits in the background.

They may play the new single also, I'll try to find out..."

    (Thanks Chris)

  • Curiosa problems in Oregon/Washington?
  • "A good friend of mine works for a large promoting company in the area and I finally contacted him about the Curiosa tour. He said that the offers are out but NONE of the local promoters want to book the show. They don't feel that it will do well enough to justify the cost that is being asked. He said that his company considered booking the show for Bend, OR but then decided to back out. For some reason the OR/WA people feel that the show will bomb. Thats the story with the Clark County show as well, no one wants to take the risk. He said that people are still considering it though and he feels that someone will take it on after some pricing negotiations. Not very promising news but there is still some hope."

    (Thanks Tara)

  • 'TEOTW' updates:
  • "today on london, ont radio station fm 96 (www.fm96.com), during the resurection lunch, they played a "then and now" for the cure. close to me followed by the end of the world. i'm not sure but this may be the first time the new single was played on fm 96. they played maybe someday a handful of times when it came out but they've been kinder to the cure lately, perhaps they will play the new single more often?

more good news for canadian fans. if only we had tour dates. :) "

"Hello, I finally heard The End of the World on 101x 101.5 FM in Austin, TX!!!!!!!! It was right before the flash back lunch, and at the end of it, they played Friday I'm in Love. :)"

  • Curespotting:
  • "Again Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails gave props to The Cure. In the access section of www.nin.com a fan from Bulgaria who recently relocated to the US saw The Cure in concert and looked forward to seeing NIN live. Trent responded" The Cure are great. I have seen them many times over the years and they're one my favorites". "

    (Thanks Gary)

"In today's Boston Globe, there is a short interview with the music director of WBCN, Oedipus. This Sunday is the WBCN "River Rave" which is like all other radio station music festival shows. The line up is pretty poor this year with similar bands that played the WHFS Festival (I'll be going only because it is an excuse to drink many beers during the day!). Anyway, Oedipus is quoted as saying "I missed out on a bunch of bands that would have played our show if not for European festivals-the Beastie Boys and the Cure, to name two." Hmmm. I don't see that The Cure had any particular plans this weekend! Figures....I think they would have received a much better reception in Boston for a festival type show than they did in DC....oh well. Guess us fans in Beantown will have to wait till August."

    (Thanks Mike G.)

"Last week they mentioned the cure on VH1's Best Week Ever. They mentioned how Morrissey, Prince, and the cure are all going back on tour. Then they mentioned how prince isn't going to play his "dirty" songs anymore because of his new religion, and someone said they hope the cure don't decide not to play any of their depressing songs anymore. haha."

(Thanks to Alex from Far From Words)

"My wife and I just got back from our honeymoon in the UK. We flew Virgin Atlantic and they offer several different stations of music to listen to while in flight. It was pre-recorded and looped. One of the stations called "VIP Lounge" played Close to Me. Ironically right after that they played How Soon is Now by The Smiths, but it was some sort of remix and sounded horrible. Close to Me was the original version, however. Couldn't think of a better way to end an absolutely magical honeymoon."

    (Thanks Darqueelfe)

  • Cure to copy Prince's album strategy?
  • From HITS Rumor Mill:

    ONE OF A KIND?

Add the Wall Street Journal to the list of major news outlets that have taken note of Prince’s novel strategy of “giving away” copies of his new album at concerts, but then having them counted as venue sales by SoundScan—sales that are likely to keep Musicology (Columbia) in or near SoundScan’s Top 10 through the summer. (The HITS Album Chart does not reflect the controversial Prince venue giveaways/sales.)

In its report, the WSJ notes that other acts—including The Cure, which has a new album on Geffen due in June—are considering borrowing the Prince strategy to boost their apparent sales. U.K rockers Gomez are reportedly considering offering fans who attend their concerts the chance to buy their new album for $10. Meanwhile, Billboard will likely reconsider its position of including venue giveaways as sales if the situation arises again in the future, with a likely stipulation being that audience members must be given the option to buy the album or not.

  • 'TEOTW' remains at #13 on the HITS Vibe-rater chart (Morrissey shoots to #1):
  • The Cure

    Geffen

    album: The Cure

track: The End Of The World

Rock icons' 13th studio LP, 1st in over four years. Pomo radio continues to blow up. Added Q101, KTBZ. Spinning: WXRK, KROQ, KITS, WPLY, WHFS, KKND, tons more. Vid being shot at presstime. Curiosa Festival starts 7/24 in Miami. WHFest this weekend. Pepsi Smash upcoming. LP hits 6/29 shipping 300k. Mgmt: Daryl Bamonte

  • And 'TEOTW' has gained 6 spots on the Radio & Records alternative chart, going from #31 last week to #25 this week, with 814 plays. Also #1 on the Alternative Most Increased Plays chart with +235. Check the Support the Single page, find your station and keep requesting it.

  • If you had any problems with the pre-sale yesterday, don't worry:
  • "I called Merryweather Post Pavillion, as I couldn't find very good tickets on the presale, and they said only a limited number of tickets were distributed through the presale, and there would be General Admission/ Floor tickets available for the regular onsale date. So if there is anyone else that couldn't find the seats that they wanted there is HOPE!"

BTW, looks like the ticket brokers didn't have any problems, just check Ebay.

    (Thanks J.)

  • 'The Cure' to be released in Israel on July 15th:
  • "you can pre-order it at http://www.musicaneto.com/disk_details.asp?disk_id=7213 for 70nis for a member and 90nis for regular custumers (which is about 15$ and 19$) and they say it'll be released by 7/15/04."

    (Thanks M F)

And on June 30th in Sweden:

"I just read a promo sticker on "The end of the world single". The promo sticker was written in swedish and it said that the new album will be released in June 30th in Sweden. Not June 28th. Maybe it´s the same for the rest of Europe?"

    (Thanks Bjorn)

"The End of the World is #3 on itunes Rock page today"

    (Thanks Serena)

"They still haven't started playing TEOTW in Denver yet but I talked to one of the DJ's on KTCL 93.3 today and they said they're going to play it this weekend as a then and now deal. I'm still working on them to get it in their rotation. "

    (Thanks Nate)

  • Tired of hearing about All About Eve? Skip to the next item then. : ) Now then, UK fans, they need your help. They need more sales to crack the Top 40, as the mid-week charts have it at #45. If you're still on the fence, wondering what it sounds like, you now have two options to try it before you buy it. First, HMV has sound clips from CD1 and CD2 (including the 'Apart' cover). Second, you can hear the single at Music Click. Thanks to everyone who is helping out!

  • David has finished his new Cure book. Here's an update:
  • "The French and English version of my book about The Cure are now completly finished. I had the great chance to find someone for making the visual side of the book who's very talented : he's a Canadian fan and a professional designer working in music industry. I personnaly think it'll be the most beautiful book made about The Cure (and I don't speak about the text but only about the visual side). I managed to choose very rare pictures as I wanted something a bit special (not too many small and so-so pics but about 50 made in a bigger format).

For the French version, the lead-singer of Mickey 3D who always said he started music when he heard The Cure, very kindly wrote a small text I will print on the back-cover and I hope I'll have another text from an international artist.

As my aim was and still is to share this work with lots of fans all around the world, I was looking for people for other translations : a few fans are already working on Spanish, Italian and Portuguese versions but I still have difficulties to find someone who'd be ok to translate into German (if someone is interested : david.fargier@fr.smurfitgroup.com).

I'm desperatly looking for a beautiful picture from the 1996-97 period ; the whole band on stage or not would be perfect. One of Jason could also be great. It must be a high resolution one to be used for the printing.

I also wanted to keep this project as independant as possible, because without a publisher and stores fees, I'll be able to maintain a quite low price for such a book : that's why I decided to release the different version via a micro site we're working on and we'll get in touch with internet Cure fansites in a few weeks to give you all information."

    (Thanks David)

  • Can anyone help Martijn?
  • "I’m planning a trip to Portugal because my very best friend has a big wedding party there on the 24th of july. Why not do the smart thing and also go to the Vilar de Mouros festival to see the band we all love most. J But here’s the problem: The Vilar website is absolute crap and I just can’t seem to find ANY info on the web about tickets and how to get there. You know anyone who might be able to help me? Thanx!"

  • Curespotting:
  • "There were at least two mentions of the Cure in the latest Hits Magazine. One in the Vibe-Raters where they debuted at 13 (of 16). This is basically a chart that lets retail stores know what has a buzz in the industry but either hasn't been released yet or hasn't broken into the mainstream. There is also a full page ad for "The End of the World" using the album art."

    (Thanks Ryan)

"In Q Magazine's June Issue(?): 100 Greates Gigs Ever List

#66 The Cure, Glastonbury Festival on 21 June 1986 (page 70)."

  • More North American Cure shows in the fall?
  • "curiosa

a friend got his hands on sell sheets for the new album and they said they are bringing the festival to toronto & vancouver with more dates to follow in the late fall!

we'll see, but this is good news for us canuck cure fans!

    video shoot

apparently the video shoot location was top secret, the staff were not even told of the actual location but rather told to meet at a certian time and place then taken to the set?

    can anyone confirm this?"

This is pure speculation on my part, but could the full announcement have been delayed to add more shows in the fall? Possibly "Cure only" shows? How great would that be? Sort of makes you see Curiosa in a much better light, doesn't it? Now keep your fingers crossed that it's true. This could get very interesting. : )

    (Thanks Bryan)

  • And here's the mp3 of the Radio One interview and 'TEOTW':
  • COF - Bruno's mirror

(Thanks to Hugh for the file and to Bruno for the mirror)

  • Robert and 'TEOTW' on Radio One tonight:
  • "Just to let you know that Radio One in the Uk will be giving the single it's exclusive first play tonight just before 9pm. There should also be a short phoner with Robert. They will be asking for feedback from the audience........ "

    (Thanks Neil)

"I have been informed by a friend that Robert will be doing an interview by telephone on the Zane Lowe show on BBC Radio 1 here in the UK. Zane's show airs 8pm-10pm. Live streaming from http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/index.shtml?logo

Doesn't mention it on the website at the moment though, so I don't know how accurate this is..."

    (Thanks Jason)

Update: Well, it wasn't much. Just about 3 minutes or so and here are the highlights:

Was calling from Toronto, making the video.

Band thought the album title was tongue in cheek, only your first album can be self-titled.

Used vintage gear for the recording, same stuff from the first record.

This is far from the heaviest album, more mid-term. Starts heavy but moves into melodic by the middle, still a very guitar driven album.

Given this statement, some of the changes made to the tracklisting, and other things, it sounds like it will be more pop, less rock. Oh well, at least we get 'Lost' and 'The Promise'.

  • The show in Paris IS confirmed, but it won't be acoustic.

  • Xacobeo festival schedule announced:
  • "Don't know if this was already brought up by anyone or not, but here are the scedules for xacobeo festival: http://www.terra.es/ocio/articulo/html/oci22615.htm

looks like it's going to be a 2 hour show."

  • FEIST and OVERHEAD will be the guest artists to play before THE CURE at the Festival Des Voix du Gaou.
  • (Thanks to Jerome at Plainsong)

  • Possible confirmation of the NYC Curiosa show at Randall's Island:
  • "I was just reading the new issue of Time Out New York, and their feature story this week is on summer concerts. They do list the Curiosa Festival as playing Randall's Island on July 31st. So I'm not sure if the venue information is 100% confirmed (for all I know, they may have taken the info off your site!) but Time Out is usually pretty accurate when it comes to show listings. Unfortunately, they still don't have an onsale date listed or prices."

    (Thanks Tom)

  • More talk of a Phoenix show:
  • "The Edge in Phoenix, AZ announced on Saturday that The Cure will be here August 28th. And, a friend of mine says he has word that they will be playing Cricket Pavillion."

    (Thanks Yvonne)

  • 'TEOTW' update:
  • "The single is now listed in the featured Pre-Releases section on the intro page of the iTunes Music Store and also in the daily Top 100. Today it jumped from 80 to 52."

    (Thanks Brett)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I was watching The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn last night and he had Shalom Harlow on from the TV show "The Jury." She told the story about how before she was on TV she was a model. She said she got her break when a talent scout spotted her at a Cure concert!"

Yeah I saw that. Said that she loves The Cure and that she went with a friend to one of the shows when she was 15 and was "discovered" there. It was at the Toronto show on the Prayer Tour in 1989.

    (Thanks Mark)

    May 25th

  • Well, nothing is ever clear when it comes to The Cure. There are now TWO passwords being given out for tomorrow's pre-sale. The WHFS Comrades e-mail says it's 991hfs and the 9:30 Club e-mail says it's lovcat. Will both work? I have no idea, but here are the specific links for each password:
  • Password: lovecat / 9:30 Club link

    Password: 991hfs / WHFS link

The Merriweather Post Pavilion is also supposed to send out a password in their e-mail, so we can probably expect another one by tomorrow (Update: no it's lovcat too).Anyway, here's how the prices breakdown:

    GENERAL ADMISSION FLOOR/PIT $75.00

    MAIN PAVILION SEATING $60.00

    LOGE PAVILION SEATING $60.00

    GENERAL ADMISSION LAWN $40.00

BTW, does anyone else find it pretty funny that the first Curiosa show to go on sale isn't even on the "official" list at thecure.com?

  • Ideal Copy to lower their prices on 'The Cure':
  • "We at www.idealcopy.com wanted to give you a heads up, that we are going to be lowering our price on the new Cure album, both regular CD and the CD/DVD. We probably won't be able to get this change completed until Wednesday May 26th, but just wanted to let you and your visitors know that The Cure is our favorite band."

    (Thanks Chris)

  • The Cure WILL do an acoustic show in Paris:
  • "I've just phoned RTL2 radio station in Paris. The woman in charge, answered me, yes The Cure along with other artists (including Placebo and others) will participate for an accoustic show at the Olympia in Paris, the 30th of june. I insisted on the name the cure, just to make sure she was not mixing things up with Kyo which happens to be a french band. This special event will be a one day only event. The whole thing is organized exclusively by RTL2, so the tickets to win will only be available through RTL2 radio, and only on the phone (no mention about any internet way to win the tickets yet). The tickets will be distributed starting from next monday (31st of May) and during 15 days. The woman on the phone did not know how long this event would last. She was very kind in answering my questions. I hope i asked enough to satisfy anyone's requests!

Further information to come maybe next monday :)

    What a YEAR! "

This has now been confirmed by official sources.

    (Thanks Bill)

  • Review of the 'Apart' cover by All About Eve:
  • "Apart, for all it's soft and soothing tones, is uncompromisingly stark in its subject matter of a couple drifting (or even falling) away from each other. You can always rate the value of these sort of songs by whether or not they click with your own feelings when such things happened to you. So much of the modern rubbish in this vein completely fails to move me, especially all this purile f*** it nonsense that has been floating around the top of the charts like other unplesant things that are naturally inclined to float. Apart, on the other hand, clicks instantly. It is a magnificant song, and deserves its place up with the other greats of the genre such as All About Eve's own December, Mish's Butterfly on a Wheel, James' Walking The Ghost and Out To Get You, and of course St Etienne's Like A Motorway. Not forgetting the Sister's I Was Wrong to which Apart might actually be the antithesis to, both being songs of desolation, but one where the protagonist is long past caring, and the other where they care but can do no more.

In conclusion, these singles represent magnificent pieces of work and deserve to take their rightful place a the top of the charts. Whether the Great British Public are bright enough to agree remains to be seen, but Julianne, Andy, Toni and Ben can rightfully be extremely proud of their work either way. "

BTW, Ideal Copy are also carrying the singles in the US and have the best price at $9.49 each. Check the ordering page for the links.

    (Thanks Paul)

  • 'TEOTW' updates:
  • "Just wanted to let you know that as of Monday The End Of The World is still No. 1 on Y100's Top 7@8 in Philly! I just got back from Atlanta yesterday and saw that it was No. 1 on Friday as well."

  • Do not buy the password!!!
  • "There are five listings on E-Bay for the presale password to the Columbia, MD concert. Starting bid is $9.99. Very odd considering COF, WHFS, and the venue all give it out for free. Tix for that show are out of control too. You could pay around $70 (inclusive of service charges) and still be in the 42nd row far left or right of the stage. With the $50 one-hour HFStival set, and now a $70 presumably short Curiosa set, us DC fans are getting killed."

In case you missed it, the password is lovcat. If it changes, I'll let you know.

    (Thanks crystallhell69)

  • Neapolis update:

  • Curespotting:
  • "This past tuesday 18th May, on French tv channel France 2 program 'Comme au Cinéma - Histoires Courtes' (that's about shorts movies), among other short films, they played one titled 'I'm an Actress' (by and with Maïwenn, France). So that's the story of a disturbed female film star wannabe who ends up pushing her 11 year's old daughter into casting against the young girl's will, who'd just want a normal simple life and her mother to stay home instead of going out to party with men all night. It's an around 20 minutes long film about the classic subject of an adult having one crap life and doing everything so that his/her child succeed where he/she has failed. To my taste it was average, not completely crap nor brilliant, but got one good point especially for one song in the soundtrack I liked and also the fact that the young girl was often wearing a 'boy's don't cry' t-shirt."

  • Robert at the Toronto airport:
  • "Just wanted to let you know that I met Robert yesterday at Toronto Airport... He was so nice, even after having sat in a plane for two hours on the tarmac he took the time to sign my copy of "greatest hits" and even posed for a pic for me... He was absolutely amazing!!!!!!!!!!! "

    (Thanks Tamara)

  • The Cure acoustic show in Paris?
  • "I just heard on french radio RTL2 that they have few tickets to win for an accoustic show with different artists at "L'Olympia", Paris, 30th june 2004 !!! The CURE will be here ! No tickets for sale... All of them are invitations to win ! "

(Thanks to Rodxxx at Your Tongue is Like Poison)

    Update: No, they're not:

"For the acoustic show in olympia, Paris, it's NOT The Cure but Kyo a french group with other french group."

    (Thanks Sylvain)

  • 'The Cure' out in Australia on June 28th:
  • "While in the city today I popped into HMV to enquire about the release date of a certain album. The lady I spoke to was a bit of a dill and appeared to doubt that I had my facts straight about the album being called THE CURE(ignorant biped).Anyhow she tapped away at her little computer for at least a minute or two and obviously couldn't find any info about it.Luckily my trusty offsider Risako had thought to browse the cd racks and came over to tell me about the message on the C rack that said the new album by the CURE being released 28-06-04 TBC.As with Dots recently the waiting is killing me. Its torture but its almost here."

    (Thanks Swifty)

  • According to iTunes, this is the cover for 'TEOTW':
  • (Thanks Brad)

  • It's May 24th...if you're in the UK, why are you reading this? You should be at your local record store to pick up the new All About Eve single, 'Let Me Go Home'. CD2 includes a cover of The Cure's 'Apart', but you really should buy CD1 as well. Do you really want to separate the poor things? No, you don't. They'll be lonely if they're not together. So support good music AND take a stand against CD single loneliness. : )
  • Not in the UK? No problem, use these ordering links.

Congratulations and good luck to Julianne, Andy, Toni and Ben!

    May 23rd

  • Here's the pre-sale info for the Columbia, MD. show on Aug. 6th:
  • Cure Presale

    CURE-ious?

Playing happy synth-pop over melancholy lyrics with a uniquely fashioned frontman, The Cure became one of the most popular bands of the '80s. WHFS 99.1 and I.M.P. Present Curiosa Festival 2004 featuring THE CURE w/ Interpol • The Rapture • Mogwai August 6 Merriweather Post Pavilion • Columbia, MD

There is a 4 ticket limit in the pavilion, 8 ticket limit on the lawn.

    (Thanks Ali)

  • Seems like there were some injuries at last night's show.
  • (Thanks gurustuff)

  • 'TEOTW' update:
  • "So here we go. The single is now on air in Belgium, on Pure FM. Last week, on wednesday, Rudy Leonet played it on his show, but as told by Eric ( I think ), he couldnt play the studio version but he played the Leno version - for stupid copyrights reason methinks. Then, starting last friday, TEOFTW became a "fresh" on Pure FM. Every week, they choose three songs to be played in heavy rotation ( one of the songs every hour, so you hear the song every three hours ). This week, they chose Cure, Sonic Youth (yay!) and Canadian singer Feist. So it's really great. Dunno about other radios here, but i'm quite sure they also play it heavily on Studio Brussel, as their playlists are always quite the same as on Pure FM."

    (Thanks Olivier)

"The end of the world was played for the first time in Argentina. FM Rock & Pop 95.9 , in Buenos Aires. They talked about the "Curiosa Tour" and the new album. "

    (Thanks Beto)

  • Festival du Gaou posters:
  • "Giant street posters for the Festival du Gaou are now displayed in the Toulon / Six-Fours area. See pictures here : http://jjcc.chez.tiscali.fr/curepress/affichesgaou.jpg"

    (Thanks to Jerome at Plainsong)

  • For those of you who only check the news page, the HFStival setlist and reviews are here. Now let's hope someone got good recordings of the new songs and will be willing to share them with everyone (unlike some of the Coachella tapers).

  • Curespotting:
  • "Today I happened to watch Best Week Ever on VH1. There was some breif talk about the Cure. They talked about how old bands are coming back this summer like Prince Van Halen , Morrisey and The Cure. Also on that show a few months ago they gave a downgrade to 311 for covering the Cure. "

    (Thanks Coregirl)

"In the most recent issue of Rolling Stone (the one with Eminem and D12 on the cover) I found three Curespottings: On page 13, there's a story about Universal's CD prices with a photo of a boy in a CD shop. On the shelf in the picture you can see Join the Dots, Greatest Hits, and Galore, and then a few shelves down is Japanese Whispers. That was the most interesting Curespotting, but there's also a review of Coachella on page 18 with a picture of Robert, and then there's an article about music combining with sport and has a picture of Robert (page 70) in a Tampa Bay Lightning hockey jersey."

    (Thanks Alia)

    May 22nd

  • And now the Columbia, Md. listing is back. Now the pre-sale is scheduled for wednesday, May 26th from 10am until 10 pm. Limit of 4 pavilion tickets, 8 lawn tickets. Let's see how long it stays up this time.

  • 'TEOTW' update:
  • "the end of the world has debuted at #25 on the edge102.1 charts. there are request links at edge.ca"

    (Thanks Jeff)

  • 'TEOTW' also available from MusicMatch.
  • (Thanks bennion)

  • 'The Cure' makes Entertainment Weekly's list of Top Summer albums.

  • 'Trilogy' dvd in Portugal:
  • "I've just found out that Diário de Notícias (a portuguese newspaper) will start a new dvd collection soon, this time music dvd's, and between the 18 dvds there's The Cure's "Trilogy". Here it is what the advertisment they have in the newspaper says (sorry i don't have a scanner, i'll try to scan this soon): "DN brings to you the best concert's DVD collection that you've ever seen. There are 18 DVD's with the biggest names in music: Paul McCartney, The Cure, Eric Clapton, Tom Jones, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, INXS and many other "sacred monters" of contemporany music". To get these DVD's you have to buy DN (1 euro) plus 9.90 euros for the DVD, starting out May 28th with paul maccartney. In the page you can see the side of the Trilogy DVD, and it seems it's hard cover and not the threefolded digipack, and judging by the Paul Maccartney's cover of "get back" that is showing front, it might have a slight different cover. I will try to get more info about this edition as well as release date."

    (Thanks Paulo)

  • Another question for the guitar experts:
  • "I'm trying to figure out what kind of guitar(s) Perry used on the Wish tour? I highly doubt its a Schector, but you never know? "

    (Thanks -L.J.- )

Update: "From the September 1992 issue of Guitar Player Magazine, I found this under the Cure gear section of the article by Joe Gore: "Perry Bamonte who had taken over Porl Thompson's 6-strings chores, plays a '63 Bass VI (fender). A southpaw, he switches between left handed models (a (red) Gibson ES-335, an Ovation 12 -string electric-acoustic, and a converted right handed (black) Gibson Chet Atkins. All electric guitars were ran through Boss pedals to Peavey amplifiers" I also would add to the list, a left handed Rickenbacker 12-string electric that he can be seen using on The Show concert video."

    (Thanks Frank)

"He was using a Gibson 335 for most stuff. He played a Fender bass VI, Ovation acoustics, as well. That's about it, he was usually on keyboards for Wish."

    (Thanks Jeff)

"Perry used a Gibson Chet Atkins Country Gentleman converted right hand model (same type that Robert used/uses, but with a double cut away), a '63 Fender Bass VI(played upside-down),Gibson 335 & Ovation 12-string (left handed)"

    (Thanks Joey, Pizza and Craig)

  • Curespotting:
  • "In an article titled "Adam Duritz finds Cure in writing 'Shrek 2' song" in the daily oklahoman entertainment/music section, duritz shares that the new song "accidentally in love" was influenced by the cure.

he had written lyrics and then rexamined his work later, "i looked at it later, and i feel like the first verse feels like a Cure song to me."

he was talking about the cure's "just like heaven" and the first line "show me show me show me."

"it felt like that exuberant flow of words, an explosion of words. it's like someone who is experiencing that sort of joy and is about to lose it all."

    (Thanks Richard)

"Here in Latin America we have a tv channel called Sony Entertainment Television, and in between shows and commercials they show entertainment information mostly about the Tv shows they have and the top 5 movies in the US. Among the news they are currently showing, one is about The Cure, the new album and the tour. I found it to be curious, since it is always stuff about pop. "

    (Thanks Enrique)

"Edge 102.1 in Toronto really, really loves the Cure. This weekend they are doing a 'high school reunion' weekend, where each hour they play songs from a particular year (seems to be 80s and 90s). So far just this morning the Cure have made it on twice -- the hour of 1985 had "Close to Me", and 1992 had "Friday I'm in Love". Considering how many songs can be played in one hour, and how many popular songs there were in that whole year, it's quite impressive that they've already been featured twice."

    (Thanks heather the buzzard)

"Just this second saw the most depressing Curespotting. Jonathon Ross' band "3 poofs and a piano" did a rendition of Friday I'm In Love on his Friday night with Jonathon Ross show. Nobody should ever have to watch that!"

    (Thanks Ed andVicky)

    May 21st

  • And of course the TM listing for Columbia, Md. has now been removed.

  • WHFS confirms that The Cure will go on stage at 9:45 on saturday.
  • (Thanks Julie)

  • More Toronto info:
  • "I just heard Alan Cross from Edge (edge.ca) in Toronto talking about his experience with Robert Smith during an interview they had in England. He said Robert was very chatty and extremely nice. He (Alan) didn't say anything about the gig in TO, so I sent him an email and he told me to 'trust him' as Robert told him face to face that they are coming to play here. However, he (Alain) told me it might be the 9th or 10th instead of the 8th, which makes sense as there is a good 7 hours of travelling from Boston (the previous curiosa date) to Toronto. During his comments this morning he said that The Cure is right now in Toronto for the TEOW video. "

    (Thanks Luis)

  • 'The Cure' article from ICE Magazine:
  • "There was a blurb about the new album in the June copy of ICE Magazine I got today in the mail:

The Cure issues its first new studio album since 2000's Bloodflowers on June 29. The eponymous set is the band's first get-together with nu-metal producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit) for his Geffen-affiliated I Am label. While the track list was not finalized as of press time, the following includes both working (designated by *) and finalized titles:

    Lost

The End of the Word (first single)

    Truth, Goodness & Beauty

    I Don't Know What's Going On

    Taking Off

    Anniversary

    This Morning

    Us or Them

    The Promise

    Going Nowhere

    Labyrinths *

    Before 3 *

    Precious Advice *

    Jason #3 *

The enduring post-modern quintet debuted "The End of the World" on the Tonight Show and three more songs at its May 2 Coachella performance in Indio, CA. Guitarist Perry Bamonte tells ICE that singer/writer Robert Smith delivered three separate sets of songs for the demo sessions, with each subsequent set completely replacing the one before. Of the 40 songs written, only 20 were recorded, with those not appearing on "The Cure" planned as B-sides (reporting by Dayna Cramer)."

    (Thanks Keith)

  • Portugal is now also confirmed by thecure.com. And yes, they still left that "full announcement on monday" bit. I guess eventually it will be true. : )

  • 'TEOTW' debuts at #31 (with 579 plays) on the Radio & Records Alternative National Airplay chart. It's also #1 in most increased plays with a gain of 380 over last week. Also #3 on the Triple A most increased plays list with a gain of 45, but not on the chart yet.

"I was listening to the local news radio in the car the other day (750 WSB, Atlanta, GA) and they have this commercial of Hennessy Cadillac dealership. In the background they played the instrumental part (beginning of the song) of “The Walk” from “Mixed Up” album.

I seriously doubt, that The Cure authorised the use of their song for the local dealership comercial even if it is Cadillac. The comercial is on the air for the second month already."

"Brandon Neil Ragan's new collection of poems dealing with his growing up in the "alternative scenes" of the eighties and nineties...( punk, new wave, goth, and so on ) has several references to The Cure. There is one poem called "Mope Culture" that has an entire stanza about Robert Smith. There are also sevreal references about "Listening to Faith". The book is called "The Grey Garden". What made me pick it up the book in the first place was the picture of the author on the cover totally looks like Robert Smith. Check it out"

  • Robert interview on The Edge 102.1 in Toronto:
  • "So I've been listening just today to Edge 102.1 Toronto (haven't listened in months) on the off chance of hearing TEOTW -- and just now, just happened to catch a 'preview' snippet of the interview with RS that they'll be playing in full at some time in the future (he said "coming up" with a premiere of new music).

In the preamble, the DJ said that one of the most-anticipated albums of this summer will be the new Cure, and he mentioned the Curiosa festival and many of the participating bands (though no news about a Toronto date).

The interview happened when their program director Alan Cross went to England this past week -- he met RS midnight on tuesday at Gatwick airport... midnight because Robert gets up at 5am and goes to bed at 8pm. That's what he said, I thought, but that doesn't make any sense, does it?

Apparentely Sigismondi (video director) is getting married, and they're trying to fit the video shoot in around that same time.

Anyway, the part of the interview they played just had Alan Cross asking about hair and makeup. "How long does it take to get your hair to look like that?" He said that actually he gets out of bed and it's like that... that it's only not like that when it rains, so he has to wear a hat. The secret is that he doesn't comb it out for months at a time... you have to sleep on lumps. He has shaved his head 3 times in the last 20 years, and feels like doing it again this summer -- but he's 'married to someone' who will leave him if he shaves it! The interviewer laughed and said something like "no, don't do that to Mary!"

Then he asked what make-up brand he uses -- which of course is MAC... MAC has promised RS that the makeup will remain intact even on the surface on sun... they're only missing a good black eyeshadow, which he intends to tell them at the next big meeting they have.

Robert sounded very light-hearted and chipper. Can't wait for the full interview!

Then they followed the interview snippet with In Between Days!"

    (Thanks heather the buzzard)

  • And a bit more about the video shoot in Toronto:
  • "Just heard on Toronto radio Edge 102.1 CFNY that The Cure are confirmed to be in Toronto over the long weekend shooting the new video. The director is reportedly getting married in Toronto and they plan on shooting in between activities. I'll be keeping my eye open for the band all weekend."

And yes, I know the sell sheet said London, but things have changed since they put that together.

    (Thanks John)

  • "someone at my old company just emailed me and said geffen was up last week and played them 4 tracks of the new album...he couldn't remember the names other than the single...he described the songs as a cross between head/door and disintegration."

The character of "Vicky" was thinking about her husband through flashbacks while the song played in its entirety, the song loud and clear. I sat there slack-jawed through the whole thing- it was PERFECT. Sigh."

  • Rumors of a Sacramento Curiosa show:
  • "There was an article in this morning's Sacramento Bee about a possible Curiosa tour date in Sacramento. Here is the article written by David Barton:

Will a visit from the Cure help soothe a hot Sacramento summer?

The Cure, which reunited for a bill-topping appearance earlier this month at the Coachella Music Festival, has announced portions of a U.S. summer tour that sounds like Coachella Revisted: Supporting the Cure on the main stage will be Interpol, The Rapture and Mogwai, with such coachella veterans as Muse, Cooper Temple Clause and Cursive on the second stage. The tour was announced last week, but the closest date promised so far is in Los Angeles. We're crossing our fingers for a Sleep Train Amphitheatre show, which is not out of the question, according to those in the know. No official confirmation yet, though. As soon as we know, you will. "

    (Thanks Mariano)

  • And the Muse website lists a stop in Washington, D.C. for August 6th. Looks like they will only be on the tour from the July 28th show in Nashville through the Aug. 15th show in Houston.

  • Another chance to win a trip to Curiosa:
  • "WFNX 101.7 fm here in Boston, who are playing TEOTW, are giving away a trip this week to Curiosa July 24 in West Palm Beach. You pretty much have to be a listener here to win though since they don't webcast. Wish me luck!"

    (Thanks Justin)

  • Curespotting:
  • "From http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A38099-2004May18.html - review for the new Morrissey You might need to register to read the article, its free.

"You Are the Quarry" isn't just his finest work in more than a decade, it's the high-water mark of the new wave of '80s revivalism, which has been heavy on quick-buck reunion tours (the Cure, the Pixies) and light on quality product."

Hmm, exactly when did the cure officially break up? "

    (Thanks Greg)

And here's one I found in a Morrissey review at New York Metro:

"Emotional stasis has always been central to Morrissey’s persona—he famously told an interviewer, “I don’t want anything to interfere with this state of dissatisfaction”—and Morrissey’s peers like the Cure face the same sort of expectations from their fans. But the Cure’s Robert Smith has held onto his romantic worldview while transforming his band into expansive, almost psychedelic rockers. Morrissey doesn’t try half as hard, content to play his own caricature, alt-rock’s Woody Allen. On his great 1992 single “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful,” Morrissey winked at how his sudden fame was received by admirers. But it isn’t success that makes Morrissey hateful; it’s his turning of adolescent inadequacies into a crass road show."

Big thanks again to Rudy Leonet and Fanny from PureFM for trying to play the single asap in Belgium..."

    (Thanks Eric)

"Here in Spain Radio 3 played the single for the first time last week, I don't remember if it was Tuesday or Wednesday."

  • 'TEOTW' promo singles pulled from Ebay:
  • "Just to let you know the 2 promo singles that were on ebay have been pulled off.. i assume by ebay "officials".. i was watching them to see how high they got, and now they both read "this item may no longer be available".. i just thought you might like to know."

    (Thanks Lisa)

Update: "When I worked at WEA, an advance of ‘Bloodflowers’ showed up on Ebay. They had only distributed 10 or so in the whole country, all to Elektra bigwigs, so they knew where to look for the culprit. Lo and behold, it was a bigwig in LA, who had given it to a friend for the sole purpose of selling it. The dude got fired, and Elektra made some sort of deal with Ebay. Now almost immediately when something is marked as “cure”, Ebay checks it out. If it’s a promo, it’s gone. A friend of mine tried to sell cure promos a year after the bloodflowers deal, and he was told by the ebay people to take them off auction. "

    (Thanks Brian)

  • Review of the Italian Cure special:
  • "This one was pretty disappointing. Not that i expected God knows what, but the whole history of the band was filled with so many errors i can't recall right now, it made me want to go and become a presenter just to tell history as it went.

the things went pretty basic, with the girl plainly telling the chronological events and showing videos in between. videos shown were boys don't cry, the lovecats, in between days, close to me, wciby, just like heaven, catch, lovesong, pictures of you, this "making the video" of lullaby, friday i'm in love, a forest from orange (2 greatest hits-like series in a row in 2 days, i've had my dose for at least a month!)

the best parts were the very beginning and the end. in the beginning they showed interesting clips, like short ones (10-15 seconds) from several interviews & lives; among the others: roger from the WMS E.P.K., this is a lie from the adrenaline club, london gig in 96, one of the very early live shots that are in the staring at the sea video tape, a 89-90 fascination street live snippet (leipzig maybe?), and a clip where they were in a room rehearsing something with a guitar and a toy piano (from the 96 era maybe) (no, that's not play out).

the end was the part about the collaborations: she first showed two clips from interviews of 99 and 01, where rob said he wanted to do this kind of stuff (different from usual cure-like songs, etc..) and named junkie xl (which, in her opinion, came AFTER junior jack), junior jack (she said it was a massive club hit and that he is the hottest dj around), tweaker and blink 182 ("the most discussed collaboration of the last years"!). then quick appearances by junkie xl and blink themselves, saying how much they love the cure, how they wrote the song with robert in mind... probably the same interviews you have already reported months ago. they also said their latest single ("I miss you", a kinda slow ballad) is directly inspired by "The caterpillar". I don't see all these similarities!!!! :-)

a strange fact was that she passed through the 90s in 1 minute. i understand the 80s were far more important both commercially and maybe artistically, but everything from wms to join the dots was only quickly mentioned, and that was strange. she didn't even talk about the new album (probably this was recorded before the details spread, ie before may)."

    (Thanks Pietro)

  • Another interview with Lol:
  • "I was searching the net for some software synthesizer that could emulate the sound of Roger's Moog Voyager in the new single "The end of the world" when i got into this site : http://www.arturia.com

Looking at their products, i saw a picture of one happy user that seemed familiar to me... There is a short interview with him, including a (recent?) picture with Robert Smith.

"Read in Epok, the Fnac Store Magazine about Kyo, a kind of boy rocky band not awfull, not terrible, that they were listening to Massive Attack, Archive, The Cure and Pink Floyd. That could mean they'll be able to release a good record, in the way that Blink 182 released a far better one than their previous..."

    (Thanks David)

"A friend of mine had told me about a site called BastardPop. Apparently it's a music genre where someone takes two or more artists and...overlaps the songs. It may not sound like it would be all that great, but some of the songs are pretty good. Anyway, I decided to see for the hell of it if they had any Cure related material. So I searched for it by just typing in cure, and it turns out they did, three of them. You can't forget to mark the box that says 'description' when you search, you won't get all the results by clicking 'title'. There is one song on there called "Dance With Cure (Who Loves Me)" and it's a mix of "Friday I'm In Love" and Whitney Houston. The next one is called "I'm Sorry Mr Smith" and it's a mix of "Lullaby" and "I'm Sorry Miss Jackson" by Outkast. The third track is called "Maddona I'm In Love", a mix of "Friday I'm In Love" and Maddona, obviously. I just thought I would let everyone know, since I had never seen this before on any Curespottings or anything."

    (Thanks DPG)

And Can I Get an Extra $25,000 for Cure Tickets?

Reader Clay Young points to this great instance of your tax dollars at work: In 2002, the Department of Education approved a $273,000 grant to Blue Springs, Missouri to study why kids there were "going Goth."

According to the KSHB Action News account, town officials ended up spending "only" $132,000, but even then the money was misspent:

What's more infuriating to some is that with all the money spent, Blue Springs still wasn't able to complete what it set out to do. The town hall meetings to educate people about Goth dangers didn't happen. They were replaced by a video documentary and website on Goth and counter cultures. The training sessions for 5,000 people reached 1,200. And as for those assessments and therapy for kids in need, not one child was referred. Maybe some of the leftover $$$ can go to studying the the dread meance of the Hippy Hippy Shake, which we understand is every bit as popular among kids today as Goth rock."

    (Thanks Josh)

  • Here's a report on the first version of the album (the one that was around before Coachella, and which has now been changed):
  • " It's nothing like I thought it was going to be, I was under the impression, dark and heavy, I kinda had THE KISS in my head of the sound. Of the 5 songs I heard, none of them had the layered intro to songs, the songs were straight ahead Cure rock songs. Nobody will be upset with what Ross did, it sounds amazing and Robert is doing things with his voice I've never heard. This sounds like no other Cure album, the subject matter reminded me a lot of WISH. There is a song that could become another JUST LIKE HEAVEN. It's the record that had to be made to put the cure back in the spotlight, I sat there with chills the whole time. Once you hear the single you know what I'm talking about, the single is fucking great!!!!!!!!!!

These are not confirmed song titles.

    The End of the World

Back On (this song is the darkest of the ones I heard, someone described this one as the disturbing song, Robert's voice is on fire on this song)

    Before 3

    Taking Off

Strings (the JLH sorta song, this could be a big single) "

Like I said, the album has changed since then, but at least you get a sense of what might be coming. Strings is now (I Don't Know What's Going) and Back On is now Lost. Are you all keeping track of this? There will be a quiz at the end of the semester. : )

    (Thanks Donna)

  • So the missing or retitled tracks from 'The Cure' are Truth Goodness and Beauty, This Morning, Precious Advice and Jason #3. I'll try to find out what happened to them and let you know.
  • Update: It looks like Truth Goodness and Beauty has been dropped from the US album (but WILL be on the UK version - so lame!), Jason #3 is now called Never, Precious Advice might be alt.end and This Morning will be the b-side on the TEOTW single.

There are only 11 tracks on the US cd. I guess the bonus track (Going Nowhere) is exclusive to either the vinyl version, the Japanese cd or both. It's all very confusing, but it looks like you will have to buy multiple versions of the album (at least the UK and US versions) to get all of the tracks. Forget the artwork, here's something worth bitching about.

  • Before the slamming of the new album cover goes too far, you should know that the drawing was done by a child, so I hope you cut him/her some slack.
  • Of course the decision to use it as the cover was made by an adult, so that's fair game. : )

  • The sell sheet (pdf file) for 'The Cure'. There will be a vinyl version and a deluxe cd version with a 30 min. "making of the record" dvd.
  • (Thanks to Rob from The Laser's Edge)

  • And the confirmed track listing for 'The Cure' (only 12 tracks now?):
  • 01 LOST

    02 LABYRINTH

    03 BEFORE THREE

04 THE END OF THE WORLD

    05 ANNIVERSARY

    06 US OR THEM

    07 alt.end

    08 (I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING) ON...

    09 TAKING OFF

    10 NEVER

    11 THE PROMISE

BONUS TRACK IS #12: GOING NOWHERE

(Thanks to Wilco at Goth City)

  • Well, here it is - the album artwork for 'The Cure':

  • 'TEOTW' updates:
  • "105.3 The Spy in Kingfisher/Oklahoma City, OK is playing The End of the World. I was getting ready to call them because they keep playing the new Morrissey single Irish Blood, English Heart, and I had not heard the new Cure yet. Well, when they played the new Mozzer yesterday they immediatly followed it with TEOTW! I about died. I had to sit in my car after I had arrived home to finish listening. Looks like my telepathy worked."

    (Thanks Kevin)

"Erik Dennison of "Sunday Night Vinyl", Real Radio 104.1 Orlando, finally played ' The End of the World ' on Sunday 16th.. also mentioned the WPB & Tampa dates as well the June 29th release date & upcoming remasters."

  • Has anyone heard anything about this?
  • "Tonight on Rodney on the Roq on KROQ in Los Angeles, Rodney played a song by a band consisting of members of the Cure, Rooney and some other band. I couldn't understand what the name of the band was...Franz Dots, Bronze Dots ?? The song was called "Dead Wrong". Do you know which members of the Cure are in this band and any additional information about them?"

    (Thanks Jackie)

Update: "The band name sounds a lot like an entry you had about Roger last month (4/19), although it may not be the same thing: Roger works with Frausdots: "I just thought you might be interested in knowing that Roger O'Donnell recorded some keyboards on my bands upcoming album. My name is Carl Tapia and I play keyboards in a band called Frausdots on Sub Pop Records. Brint Rademaker, the singer/songwriter/guitarist for Frausdots (Brint's bands also include Beachwood Sparks , and The Tyde) is friends with Roger O'Donnell and he was nice enough to lend his talent and creativity to our music. The album is titled "Couture, Couture, Couture" and will be released by Sub Pop Records here in the US in September. We also have a limited edition CDEP being released by Houston Party Records in Spain in June. "

  • According to RockonTV, The Cure's episode of Pepsi Smash will air on thursday, June 3rd. Other "artists" listed for that show are Black Eyed Peas, J-Kwon, New Found Glory, Rooney and Jessica Simpson.
  • (Thanks Natalie)

  • First description of the new album art:
  • "have you seen the album art yet? it's awesome, it's a crayon/water color drawing by a little kid maybe 3 or 4 years old. it looks like something that would be hanging in a kindergarten class on white lined paper, it has 4 figures (all totally different sizes and styles) on it and the heart with an eye and wings. The Cure dips across the top in black with a yellow star around the "C". Then under that is the cure written again in red marker.

I'm guessing the middle figure (which is the biggest and mostly black with scarlet alien type eyes) is Robert, with stick arms and legs."

    (Thanks Laura)

  • Cure special on MTV Italy tomorrow:
  • "Monday, at 2100 CET, MTV Italy will air "A night with: The Cure", a special hosted by an MTV presenter, that will talk about the band's history, the new album, robert's recent collaborations and will show the lullaby's video "making of". And obviously, they'll show various music videos from the past."

    And a Monography Zone review:

"So, as expected, it was just an hour of videos, closely following the greatest hits tracklist (and this was expected, too). The videos were, in order: Boys don't cry / A forest / Let's go to bed / The walk / The lovecats / Inbetween days / Close to me / Why can't I be you? / Just like heaven / Lullaby / Lovesong / Never enough / Friday I'm in love / Mint car / Cut here / Just say yes.

I have to say JSY was a nice surprise, it was fun to see that video again! : ) And now, on with "A night with", tomorrow on MTV Italy at 9 pm!

    (Thanks Pietro)

  • Cure covers:

"Yesterday a french group from the south of France played in Pau (their and my place) ; they are called KALIGARE and the singer is named Franck Basly . They are much influenced by The Cure ; they were "hard to the core curefans" when I knew them at school and their way to play and sing is so stamped by Robert and the guys! You probably know them because they were contacted by FTC Records in the States for a Tribute to The Cure called "Strange as angels". Yesterday they finished their set (last encore) with All cats are grey as on the Tribute record. Fantastic version with their own backdrop video (little chapel in the snow in the mountains... B&W pictures). Here are links to know them better...

  • Curespotting:
  • "The Cure were mentioned on the hungarian VIVA television's news section yesterday, about the fact that the band release their new album without 'knowing the title'. the report announced that the producer is Ross Robinson, and the sound would be ( should be) not too cure-ious because this fact. During the news the lullaby video was the surpsrise...( oh 89 :-) ) "

  • Curiosa in the San Francisco/San Jose area?
  • "Last night on Channel 104.9, the Bay Area alternative station out of San Jose, CA, after playing "The Lovecats" the station made an announcement that all they knew was that the Curiosa tour would be making a Bay Area stop sometime in August (but that's all they knew), and as soon as they had more information, it would be released immediately. Thought that might be useful to know."

    (Thanks Patrick)

  • Have a question you'd like to ask Robert?
  • "The spanish magazine " El País de las Tentaciones" wants my site "A Cure Of Bloodflowers" (http://acureofbloodflowers.iespana.es) send them questions for an interview with Robert Smith in London next tuesday. If you want....send your questions before Tuesday 10:00 am (GMT+01:00) to my site. (vierkof1@excite.com)"

    (Thanks Jesus)

"Today i received a mail from Jesús (webmaster of a cure of bloodflowers),a spanish cure fan site! this guy received a mail from a journalist called IKER SEISDEDOS...this journalist works for the most important spanish newspaper EL PAIS! and next tuesday EL PAIS is going to do an interview with Robert smith in LONDON! so the journalist told to Jesús that it was a good idea that for this interview cure fans make some questions to Robert smith about the new album, etc...

so in our new spanish forum (www.hispacure.tk) we have opened a new post called ROBERT SMITH INTERVIEW (EL PAIS) into THE CURE: ACTUALIDAD section where we need that cure fans post some questions to Robert smith! next monday we'll send these questions to the EL PAIS journalist and he'll interview robert in London! thanks for your help!! • 'TEOTW' updates:
  • "The Cure was at Number one on the Y100's top seven at eight in Philadelphia Lets keep it up!!"

    (Thanks Jenny)

"They are playing the Cure on 96.7 in Atlanta and Margot(the dj) was very excited about it and told all of their listeners if they didn't know the Cure, that they should. That they influenced most of the other bands they play on the station. "

    (Thanks Scott)

"97X Tampa played TEOTW for a third time on a segment called "repeat it or delete it" which The Cure has won the last two times. Tonight against The Vonblondies "Come On" new single The Cure lost by one vote!!!! Before they played TEOTW some old cow called in and went on air and complained about how the remake of Purple Haze was laughable (which the DJ sadly agreed and recommended The Cure stick to originals) I suddenly find love for Jack White of The White Stripes..:) "

On the flyer it lists a "Ultimate Live Tribute To The Cure w/ Exploding Boy". The show is on Saturday May 15th. There is a email list you can sign up for in order to save on getting into the club and be notified of future events. When I signed up I got an auto response from the website with the address and the theme of the club but no discounts. The address is 9559 E. Imperial Hwy, Downey, CA.

  • Curespotting:
  • I have no idea if this is news worthy or not, but last night was my senior prom and my friends and I staged what I like to call a little "Cure d'etat" of the DJ. You see for the past three formal dances at our enormous high school I have requested any song by the Cure to be played. Thrice I have requested the Cure, thrice I was refused. So this time I took some initiative and a few days before prom I started up a petition, the objective of course being to get the DJ to play any Cure song he had. At prom I presented the DJ with five pages filled with signatures urging him to play any song by the Cure. The DJ was so amused he got out his DJ bible and let us pick the song we wanted. Since it was Friday and we were at prom we decided to go with "Friday, I'm In Love." A few songs into the dance the DJ told the whole of our student body about my little petition and commenced playing the song. A ton of preppy kids stormed off the stage in disgust and the floor was left to the Cure fans to dance. Like I said, maybe not newsworthy, but it's something I'll remember forever.

    (Thanks Andrew)

  • 'TEOTW' updates:
  • "The Cure was back up to #1 again last night on the Y100 Top 7 @ 8."

    (Thanks Andrew)

"They played "the end of the world" on CD101 here in Columbus, OH yesterday 5/13/04 - they have been lamenting the fact that the Curiosa tour will be skipping Columbus, a town where the Cure gets a lot of airplay and is very appreciated, for Cleveland and Cincinnati."

    (Thanks Gary)

"Just wanted to let you know that 94.7 KNRK here in Portland, OR is playing The End Of The World finally. I've been listening to the station the last couple weeks for it and never heard it until today, so it was probably added in the last day or two."

    (Thanks Alex)

"I’m so happy to let everyone know that Seattle has finally woken up to The Cure! EOTW was #1 on 107.7 The End’s “People’s Choice Countdown” last night (5-12) and on Monday night, and #2 Tuesday night losing out to the new Beastie Boys. Let’s try to keep it at #1 Seattle!"

    (Thanks Renee)

"KEXP in Seattle does have the single and played it today."

    (Thanks Christine)

"I don't know if you are familiar with the online radio station RadioIORock but they just had something of a Robert Smith feast. All in a row they just played.... Lullaby, The End of the World, Perfect Blue Sky, Blink 182's All of This, Earl Slick's Believe, 311's Lovesong

All of that and no 'Da Hype," LOL "

    (Thanks Andrew)

"Finally!!!! 'The end of the world' has been broadcasted here in Mexico City! Orbita FM, a local radio station has been playing the single in a regular basis.

Also two magazines (Switch and Rolling Stone in his national edition) have two Cure articles in its content with very nice pictures. This magazines also include rewiews to the 'Join the dots' compilation, which by the way are very good, five out of five according to Blender."

    (Thanks Oscar)

"For all the Denver fans, I've been calling KTCL 93.3 everyday for the past week asking them to play TEOTW and they keep putting me off. Finally, this morning they told me that they should start playing it next tuesday. "

    (Thanks Nate)

  • I hope some of you listened in last night as 97X faded into memory. It was a great end for a great station, and naturally, The Cure were a part of it:
  • "wow...

WOXY 97X just went away forever, thought you'd like to see what the final five songs they ever played before they said goodbye and turned it all off:

(last song) U2 - SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY Album: War

11:47:24 GREEN DAY - GOOD RIDDANCE (TIME OF YOUR LIFE) Album: Nimrod

11:43:03 THE CURE - DOING THE UNSTUCK Album: Wish

11:39:03 BLUR - THE UNIVERSAL Album: The Great Escape

11:31:40 JEFF BUCKLEY - LAST GOODBYE Album: Grace

pretty amazing, eh? the last words were "goodbye to the future of rock and roll..."

    bummer..."

Also, during the final 3 hours, all of the djs were together in the studio, reminiscing about their best/worst moments at the station. When it came to best/worst interview you ever did, Robert was mentioned as one of the best.

(Thanks Jewel & Diana and Kroa)

  • Cure in NME:
  • "there are a couple of little bits about the cure in nme this week. one is just the billboard album tracklisting but the other is a review of Coachella. They actually get a good review. Ah, good old NME, hate something one week, love it the next. Will try to send a scan of it later."

    (Thanks Graeme)

Update: "One of the reasons why the NME review was favourable (by NME standards) is that it was written by Steve Sutherland, co-author of Ten Imaginary Years."

    (Thanks Hugh)

  • New Rock Walk video clip:

  • Curespotting:
  • "Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails (www.nin.com) finally updated his site and was asked in the "access" area what are the best bands he has ever seen live and among his list that he was "blown away by" was The Cure!"

    (Thanks Gary)

"I was just watching an special at brazilian cable Globo News about the future of Iraq and the growing tension in that area after the photos of the prisioners, and the video showing Nicholas Berg being killed. And to my surprise, when the video starts, the background music was the intro of End !!. It fades before Robert's voice starts ( as the video, not shown until the end ).... By the end of the special, when the credits start, the scene is one of the corridors of the prison of Abu Ghraib, in Iraq, while we can listen to the intro of Want, until the very last credit. Definitely not a fine use of Cure songs."

    (Thanks Antonio)

  • Can anyone help Ryan and Jomar?
  • "I will be in Paris for the first time this June for my Honeymoon. June 3 - June 12. I would like to know if you, or any dedicated COF Cure readers know of any unique Parisian music stores, or beautiques that would grab a Cure fan's attention. Also, if there are any special Cure events in Paris during that time. TV/Radio/Parties, etc. Would love to know. Thanks for any tips. E-mail Ryan"

"do you happen to know how to get tickets for the heineken jammin' festival? (in english?) E-mail Jomar."

  • 'The End of the World' video to be shot in Toronto:
  • "I have some information on the filming for the video of the end of the world.

taken from www.edge.ca (Edge102.1 in toronto):

And speaking of videos, rumour has it that the Cure will shoot the video for their new single, “The End of the World” in Toronto on the May long weekend. So if you see a pale guy with big, wild black hair hoisting a pint while watching a Premiere Division game, you may not be seeing things."

    (Thanks Jeff)

  • Sad news out of Ohio - WOXY 97X "The Future of Rock & Roll" goes off the air today:
  • "So WOXY played TEOTW today for the first and probably only time today. Unfortunately for those of you who don't know they are closing their doors any hour now. The couple who owns it apparently decided it was time to retire and sold it off to a corporation. There goes the last hope for independent rock. Anyway, the DJ seemed really excited to play it and said that one of the great things about the job was being able to play new Cure songs. She said she was a big fan and talked about going to see The Cure in Chicago back in 2000 at those shows before the Dream Tour and that she was ready to buy about $500 worth of merchandise but there was no merchandise table!"

    (Thanks Andrew)

"bittersweet entry here... radio station WOXY-FM from cincinnati (we listen to it at work all the time on the internet) is going off the air for good in like eight hours (after being one of the true alternative music stations for 20 years)... but i just turned it back on to catch the remaining hours and found the following listed on their "now playing" window... unfortunately, i just missed EOTW, but i loved their emphasis on the cure, copied below as is:

01:02:10 THE CURE!!!!!! THE END OF THE WORLD

that's exactly how they had it, exclamation points and all... how sweet is that? so sorry to see WOXY go... if you want to check out the last few hours, take a look at www.woxy.com and see what a cool station we're losing... corporate radio sure sucks! :o("

    (Thanks jewel)

I highly recommend tuning in and paying your last respects to one of the true legends in alternative radio.

  • A few answers for the questions that I keep getting in e-mails:
  • Tickets for the Curiosa Festival will be on sale "pretty soon" and the prices will be kept as low as they possibly can be. That's all I know about the tickets. I have no "secret info" about them, and I will not make a guess about when they might go on sale. As soon as I know more, I will post it. No need to e-mail me every hour. : )

There WILL be a commercial release of 'TEOTW' in the UK, but I don't have a date for it. No info on a release in the rest of the world.

The Curiosa Festival is North America only, so that's good news for Europe. : )

Still no info on a release date for 'The Cure' in Australia.

(Thanks to issue #35 of Nerdular Nerdence for the answers)

  • Some info from Rock And Records on how 'TEOTW' is doing at alternative radio:
  • While not making the Alternative Top 50 chart yet, it has been added by 38 stations and has 199 plays so far. It's the most added record at alternative radio this week, with 38 adds, beating out Blink 182's 'Down' which had 22. It's also second on the Alternative Most Increased Plays list with 199, well behind the Beastie Boys' 'Ch-Check It Out' with 823.

  • 'TEOTW' update:
  • "Brazilian 107.1 FM station is playing TEOTW since last week."

    (Thanks Antonio)

"I just wanted to let you know, that 96.5 the Buzz in Kansas City, MO has been playing "The End of the World" now for over 2 weeks. I guess we're just lucky or something."

    (Thanks Dana)

"I've heard TEOTW on 92.3 in Indianapolis a few times now. I think it is on something called the "Cage Match" that they have in the evening. It's up against a new song every night.I think it's won so far. :)"

    (Thanks Lance)

"weqx 102.7 in New Hampshire played the new song, and afterwards, the Dj said that the song has been geting a good response... (hehe... i called in the day before release to the stations.... to ask if they had it, so... its great that they looked into their archives, as well as asked a manager) the dj, wasn.t sure they had it, and didn.t hear of it--- i informed him... and he got right on it! *haha ya right! anyhow, i called 104.5 and asked someone who seemed to be a good dj there, because the station usually only picks up the phone i found, durring request time, so... its hard to get someone randomly.... he said the same thing, he wasnt farmilar, but will look into it!!!! so, ill be switching back and forth, from one station that is playing it, and one that owes me the tune! hehe... im such a curefanic person..."

    (Thanks Kathy)

"I was driving home from work yesterday. tuned in to KROK in NYC because i've been trying to hear the single played on the radio. the dj made an announcement about curiosa, stuff we all know already...i thought great, now play "TEOTW"...but of course, in the fine tradition of KROK sucking, the dj played the 311 cover of "lovesong"...there is no radio worth listening to in NYC...thanks for proving that point over and over 92.3..."

    (Thanks Van.)

  • Chart update:
  • "Update on greek charts: Join the dots went out of the Greek Top 50 last week, after charting for 12 consecutive weeks with a peak at #7 in the first march week.

But, surpisingly enough!!!, the GH DVD entered the charts this week at #50 !!! It seems like DVDs are counted as albums in Greece. From the charts table (which i recall it's at http://www.ifpi.gr/chart01.htm) we can read it this is its 26th chart week, and it has peaked at #8 (wow!) in the 48th week of 2001."

  • Curespotting:
  • "The Cure's Boys Don't Cry is currently being playing as the ETERNAL LP of the week down here in Chile. This radio station (Concierto) picks once a week a LP from an influential band and play all the songs during a whole week. They play a single song in different schedules...but at the end of the week you will hear the LP more than twice. I am sending the link to those who want to visit it. There is a brief explanation about The Cure in those times as a three piece bands and something like 'this is an LP which can give you a lot with very few things' also describes Robert like a guy with the ability of make sticky songs with sing of his wierd way to see the word.

I think this is interesting....we are talking about 24 years ago!!!!!!!

"I just came across this movie with The Cure in the soundtrack(the trailer has a big portion of Doing The Unstuck). Its called Gypsy 83 and its going to be released in the L.A area in a few weeks. Here's the synopsis. "Two misfit Goths, dressed head-to-toe in black velvet…

Gypsy-25, stunning, wraps herself in shawls and sequins just like her lifelong idol, rock goddess Stevie Nicks. There's a brilliant song inside Gypsy, but years of fear and anger choke her voice.

Clive-18, a beautiful skinny boy who powders his face and paints his lips death-black. Full of drive, talent and youthful dreams. He adores Gypsy but believes one day he'll find true, deep love in the arms of a guy.

Two outcasts who feel small-town Sandusky, Ohio closing in on them, Gypsy and Clive lose themselves in Gothic fantasies, soothed by the retro sounds of The Cure, Siouxie and the Banshees, and Bauhaus. Their daydreams help them escape daily abuse from a town that takes great exception to those who don't fit in.

Here's a link to the website

and a link to the trailer which is seen on Quicktime:

"Caught this Cure mention in this week's Time magazine, in an article entitled, "The Problem with Superman"

"Nowadays we prefer our heroes dark and flawed and tragic. Look at the Punisher (wife and kids dead), or Hellboy (born a demon), or Spider-Man (secretly a nerd). Look at Batman: his parents were killed in front of him, and he dresses like a Cure fan."

    (Thanks James)

"In the latest issue of JANE magazine (it's the celeb issue), they're giving away a copy of JOIN THE DOTS that's been autographed by Robert. They tried to get him to write an article but he was busy in the recording studio."

  • Curiosa commercials are starting to air:
  • "Been hearing Curiosa commercials on KTCL 93.3 FM (Denver, CO) about once an hour. Meaning one pretty obvious thing, Clear channel will the promoters. The commercial has no real news other than the fact that it's going to happen and what we know of the line up. But it does feature about a 15 second sound bite of Robert talking about his ideal venue size. About 5-10k big enough to feel like an event yet small enough to maintain a level of intimacy. "

If anyone can record one, MP3 it, and send it in, that would be great.

    (Thanks fuzzyandfreaky)

  • Curiosa in Vancouver, Wa./Portland area?
  • "A friend of mine working at the new Clark County Amphitheater (just outside of Vancouver WA) has told me that the words “Clear Channel/the cure pending Aug. 23/24” is written on their booking calendar. He went on to say when a band is “pending” it does not mean they will play here. It means they may be interested in the Amphitheater.

    (Thanks J Green)

  • More talk of a Toronto date:
  • "I just found this on Edge 102.1 www.edge.ca :

The Cure now have their own Lollapalooza-ish festival. They call it “Curiosa” (catchy, no?) and the inaugural outing will feature Interpol, the Rapture, Mogwai, Muse, the Cooper Temple Clause, Auf Der Maur and more. As we suggested in the last report, the Toronto date will be sometime in early August—quite possibly with a day or two of a much-rumoured two-day Lollapalooza stop."

"On Monday 10th May, 18hoo, on French tv channel France 3, in the quizz game "Questions pour un Champion" (difficult question game, sort of Trivial Poursuite, for people with a broad wide knowledge in every topic), in the final, they had a question about music:

go: "which band formed in 1976 had their first single inspired by the story 'the stranger' by albert camus (-then said a few hits-) and a song called 'just like heaven' used as jingle for the 'Les Enfants du Rock' program with singer leader Robert Smith using particular haircut and lipstick?

The two contenders tried 'Scopions' (Argh!) or 'the Clash'. And obviously failed.

But that's 4 points for me."

"well, it happened today at the gym. i was minding my own business on the treadmill trying to block out the horrid "skid row" song that was not only playing overhead, but the video was on the tv screen as well. when all of a sudden my mind started to pay attention to the music again. i looked up at the screen and saw robert in a fur suit! in was none other than, "why can't i be you". needless to say it put a smile on my face!! unfortunately it ended too soon and back came a remix of celine dion. well, at least i had a couple minutes of happiness on the dreaded treadmill."

  • New article from Rolling Stone:
  • Cure, Interpol Plot Festival

Curiosa tour comes in support of Cure's new, self-titled album

"If you don't like this record, you don't like the Cure," says frontman Robert Smith. He's not kidding -- the goth band's new CD, The Cure, due June 29th, is the group's best work since 1989's Disintegreation. The Cure entered London's Olympic Studios in February with thirty-seven songs and banged out an album with producer Ross Robinson in eight weeks. That's a phenomenal achievement for us," says Smith. "We haven't made a record that quickly since 1984."

Robinson, who's known for his intense recording sessions with metal bands such as Korn and Slipknot, had the group record its tracks live in the studio, resulting in a raw-sounding album full of guitar squalls and feedback. It's not all noise, though: There are several upbeat numbers, such as the first single, "The End of the World." And the standout track, tentatively titled "Labyrinths," is an Eastern-influenced epic along the lines of Jane's Addiction's classic "Three Days."

After touring Europe in June, the Cure will launch the Curiosa festival tour in the U.S. in July. Interpol, the Rapture and Mogwai will also play the main stage, with Auf Der Maur, Cursive, the Cooper Temple Clause, Cursive, Thursday and Muse among the bands who will do dates on the second stage.

  • Two more dates revealed - Toronto on Aug. 6th or 8th and Phoenix on Aug. 28th:
  • "I heard a snippet of Roger's interview on Edge 102.1, and he said that The Cure will be playing Toronto sometime during the first week of August, either on the sixth or the eighth. Both nights are open, so it sounds promising. Otherwise, all he did was mention some of the other bands that would be playing the then yet unnamed Curefest. The interview ended on a funny note. The interviewer asked Roger if 311 had contacted them before they recorded "Lovesong." Roger replied no, and if they had he would have told them to "go to hell". "

    Roger just ROCKS!!! : )

    (Thanks Joe)

Update: "I noticed the rumoured dates for The Cure in Toronto as being either August 6 or 8. If you check Lollapalooza, they are scheduled in Toronto for August 5 and 6, so it seems a Toronto date must be the 8th rather than the 6th."

    (Thanks John H)

"I just heard on my local alt station (103.9 The Edge) that The Cure will be playing Phoenix on Aug 28th, but no venue announced yet. Hope its true!!!"

If true, it looks like the tour won't end on the 27th in L.A.

    (Thanks Rick)

  • Speaking of Roger:
  • "I figured I’d show you guys a picture that I had taken with Roger O’D while out West at Coachella last weekend. I just ran into him real briefly in between stages late Sunday afternoon. He was cool and introduced me to his significant other. When I told him I was Sean from Philadelphia he said “we’ll see ya at HFS then.” I told him I had a wedding that day and he then implied that he and the band would be devastated due to my absence (just kidding). Anyway, enjoy – I had a blast at the gig and am looking forward to Curiosa. I’ll have the picture posted on my band site www.remainsnet.com real soon."

    (Thanks Sean)

  • I have no idea when tickets are going on sale for the Curiosa Festival. Maybe when the full announcement is made, we'll all get the answers we're looking for.

  • Well, here's the press release from Geffen, no new info though:
  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE CURE ANNOUNCE U.S. SUMMER FESTIVAL TOUR

NEW ALBUM TO BE RELEASED ON I AM/GEFFEN RECORDS JUNE 29TH

Santa Monica, California, May 10, 2004 - The Cure have unveiled their plans for a U.S. Tour this summer! The Curiosa Festival 2004 will kick off July 24th in West Palm Beach, Florida and continue through the end of August (see below for initial dates and cities). The headlining bill will include The Cure, Interpol, the Rapture and Mogwai. A second stage will also be part of the festivities showcasing the talent of Muse, Thursday, Cursive, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Cooper Temple Clause and Head Automatica. Second stage performers will rotate throughout the tour.

The Cure recently returned home to the U.K. after a successful trip to the U.S. where they performed their debut single, "The End Of The World" on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and performed to over 50,000 fans at the second day of the Coachella Festival in Indio, California.

The new self-titled disc will be the band's 13th studio record and their first album of new music since 2000's Bloodflowers. The Cure was recorded at London's Olympic Studios, with Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit, At The Drive In) producing and arrives in stores June 29th on Ross Robinson's imprint label, I Am Records, through Geffen Records.

Led as always by lead singer/guitarist Robert Smith, the Cure line-up since 1994 comprises longtime bass player Simon Gallup, guitarist Perry Bamonte, drummer/percussionist Jason Cooper, and keyboardist Roger O'Donnell. Perennially popular with fans all around the world, the band is currently enjoying a huge resurgence of interest. Earlier this year, Fiction Records released a compelling Cure collection, Join the Dots: B-sides & Rarities 1978- 2001, a 4-cd 70 song box set. Among a number of genre spanning collaborations undertaken in the last few months Smith has sung on the track "All Of This" from the new blink-182 cd, "Truth Is" on the new Tweaker cd, and the dance smash "Da Hype" with Junior Jack. 311 recently went to number 1 in the U.S. modern rock chart with a cover of The Cure's "Love Song" as featured in the film "50 First Dates" soundtrack, and numerous new bands such as Interpol, the Rapture and Hot Hot Heat! have been outspoken in their admiration for the Cure.

The Cure first formed in southern England in 1976 as Easy Cure. In 1978 the 'Easy' was dropped, and The Cure was signed to the Fiction label. In May 1979 their debut album 'Three Imaginary Boys' was released to great acclaim.

Other landmark Cure albums include Pornography (1982), The Head on the Door (1985), Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me (1987), Disintegration (1989), Wish (1992), Wild Mood Swings (1996) and the Grammy-nominated Bloodflowers (2000).

  • 'TEOTW' update:
  • "Just wanted to let you know that WGRD out of Grand Rapids, MI has been playing the new song all the time (apparently the mid-morning dj is a HUGE fan!). I've been listening from Little Rock, Arkansas via the internet."

    (Thanks Jennifer)

"I finally heard 'End of the World' on WHFS yesterday at 4:00PM. I'm not sure if it was the first time they played it but Cure songs on WHFS are few and far between."

    (Thanks Eric)

"Here's a quick explanation of KROQ's debut of TEOTW: At 6:00PM PST on Tuesday night they debuted the new single along with new ones from The Hives and another band whom I can't recall right now. But the two DJs seemed VERY excited about having the new Cure single to debut. They talked alot about how not only do they have three new songs to debut, but a CURE song. Then when they finally played it they talked about it for a while after they played the new songs. The were basically saying that they found it to be a big improvement over singles from the recent years. They said it seems like someone finally took Robert aside and said "hey, you don't have to try so hard." and that he probably heard what's on the radio now and said "I could write this stuff in my sleep." They REALLY seemed to like it and I probably heard it three more times to much fanfare in the following 24 hours before I left the LA area.

Also, I was up front at Coachella and there was a girl who was taking pictures and promised me some since they wouldn't let my camera in. I haven't heard from her yet. Any chance I could put this up for her to read?"

    May 10th

  • Well from what I'm hearing, it looks like there WILL NOT be a full announcement today...or it's already been posted on the official site. You make sense of that, I'm done.

  • Does anyone see the full Curiosa announcement at thecure.com? Daryl says it's already there, but I haven't found anyone who sees it. Just the 16 dates announced last week and the mention of a full announcement today.

  • Billboard has new details about the Pepsi Smash show.

  • While we wait for the full Curiosa announcement, Billboard has a story about it, but just rehashes what MTV reported last week. CNN, FMQB, Pollstar and Pitchfork have picked it up too.
  • (Thanks Brian, Lauch and Frank)

  • The official site has been updated with what looks like a logo for the Curiosa tour, the band list and the adding of the word "country" to the "SO IF YOUR CITY OR COUNTRY ISN'T HERE DON'T PANIC ... YET" bit. A glimmer of hope for Canadian and Mexican fans? I guess we'll know very soon.

  • The Cure put a stop to any more clips from the Underground show in Boston 1980:
  • "Looks like the end of the line for The Cure at the Underground clips that I have been posting on my websites. Legal representatives for the band have demanded that I remove them from my sites and have threatened me with legal action if I don’t do so….this is of course disappointing to me and perplexing as well because this footage I shot has been circulating around the globe for some 20 years…it has been bartered and sold many times. There has been no exchange, what so ever, other than good will on my part. However, for some reason I have been singled out here So I removed them on Friday and I’m sorry to have to report that they will not be coming back. Thanks to all of you for your kind words and interesting email over the past couple of months….Paix. jcrocker"

SEPULTURA Guitarist Hosts School Workshop: Video, Photos Available - May 7, 2004"According to a posting on SEPULTURA's web site, guitarist Andreas Kisser performed to a different type of audience Friday (May 7). He was invited to host a workshop in a school. Andreas answered questions, played some guitar and talked about how he became a musician to Elementary and Middle School students. Everybody quietly payed attention to Kisser as he performed with his electric, acoustic and afri-can guitars. After that Andreas joined two bands from the school to play AC/DC's "Highway To Hell" and THE CURE's "Boys Don't Cry"."

"Morrissey was on CNN headline news tonight talking about his new album and in midst of the interview they made reference to the Cure/Morrissey fued and played a snip of the Just Like Heaven video with the close up on Robert when asked about the Cure, Morrissey said something to the effect of "im surprised they are still around". "

"This is the second time i come across a Cure comparison while reading reviews about A Perfect Circle. This time it's concerning their second album:

    A user on amazon.com wrote:

"The first single, "Weak and Powerless," is a standout. Like much of the record, it's clearly influenced by the new wave of the late 80's and early 90's -- there are points at which Keenan's voice seems to channel that of the Cure's Robert Smith -- yet strikingly original. It's disarming, with a haunting quality that carries throughout the record."

Anyway, you really should check out the band if you haven't already! "

    (Thanks Laurent)

"I was reading Slashdot.com and was looking at a blurb for a GPS for the Advanced GameBoy. It had this link to the products website: http://www.redskymobile.com/index.cfm?Flash=Yes

  • The official site has been updated with the 16 tour dates that were announced yesterday, and assures us that more dates WILL be added. In the KROQ interview, Robert said there were 25 dates, so there should be 9 more dates added.

  • And 3 of those additional dates are rumored to be 2 nights in Irvine, Ca. and a stop in Las Vegas. But they are only rumors right now, NOT confirmed.

  • Curespotting:
  • "Today at lunch, as I was walking back to my car I noticed a really old guy staring at the back of my car. He had to be in his 80's, and I had no idea what he was doing, but as I got there he asked me if I like The Cure. I said yes, and he said that they’re his favorite group. (naturally I have a Cure sticker on the back window) He said he’s seen them 38 times. Then he asked me if I knew that they had a new album out, and I said that it wasn’t out yet, and won’t be until next month. He said yes that’s true for most, but his son's company is the Cure's new label, that he has an advance copy. He told me that Ross IS a HUGE fan, and he agrees with Ross’ assessment that this may be the best Cure album ever. So I guess that Ross’ posts praising the album aren’t just lip service. I don't know if! he was telling the truth, or pulling my leg, but I talked to him for a little while and he sounded pretty sincere, and like he really knew what he was talking about. Do any readers out there know anything about Ross' family and if this could have been him? This was in Walnut Creek, California. He said one last thing, that gave me a chuckle. He said he hasn't liked any of the music I Am has released until this point. "

  • MTV leaks some of the dates and details for the Curiosa Festival Tour!!!:
  • Cure Announce Festival Tour With Interpol, Rapture, Mogwai

    05.07.2004

Time to get out the hairspray and black eyeliner again. Less than a week after headlining the Coachella festival in the Southern California desert, goth pioneers the Cure have unveiled plans for a full U.S. tour this summer.

The Curiosa Festival 2004 will feature the Cure headlining a bill that also includes three bands plainly influenced by Robert Smith and company: Interpol, the Rapture and Mogwai.

A second stage will also be part of the traveling road show, with Muse, Thursday, Cursive, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Cooper Temple Clause and Head Automatica rotating as performers.

The Cure formed in 1976, and only iconoclastic singer/songwriter Smith remains from the group's initial lineup. Simon Gallup, who joined the group in 1979, is the only other longstanding member in the current lineup. The group plans to release a new eponymous album on June 29, the band's first LP since 2000's Bloodflowers. The first single from the album bears the cheery title "The End of the World."

The tour kicks off July 24 in the unlikely tropical setting of West Palm Beach, Florida, and ends August 27 in Los Angeles. Additional dates are still being added.

Dates for the Curiosa Festival 2004, according to a band spokesperson:

Kirk Miller, the writer, says, "...the goth band's new CD, The Cure, due out June 29th, is the group's best work since 1989's Disintegration."

    (Thanks Rust)

  • 'TEOTW' in San Diego:
  • "Just to let you know that 91X in San Diego has been playing the new song on Robin's show."

    (Thanks Jenn)

But no luck in Dayton, Ohio:

"I requested TEOTW on 103.9 WXEG basically like this:

"Can you play the new Cure single, "The End of the World". I heard radio stations got it in today"

Only to get this reply: "I'm playing it right now....311, Lovesong"

So you see my dilemna, in the words from the movie, 'The Lion King', "I'm surrounded by idiots".

  • Does anyone have an answer to this question about Loreley?
  • "GetGo has “standing room tickets,” which I assume means on the floor with the opportunity to get as close as possible to the stage.

Kartenhaus has “free choice tickets”, which I am not sure what this means in terms of floor access.

Have you heard from anybody regarding what choice allows unfettered access to the floor?

    (Thanks Jay)

Update: "all tickets for the Loreley show are general admission - so there's no anxiety where to buy tickets - they have all the same type of tickets. I would buy there where the postage fees are the lowest. www.kartenhaus.de is always a good choice."

    (Thanks Sascha)

I then proceeded to request some old Cure for the flash back “What’s for Lunch” segment and it was not played. So much for Cure support in Seattle! I’ll keep trying though."

    (Thanks Renee)

    Kansas City:

    Ha.

The DJ then asked what she thought of the new Cure song, and the girl said, "Oh... um, sure, I guess it was okay. It's not bad."

Real waves of enthusiasm over here in Texas."

    Ross

i am a true cure fan. this record is for people like myself, who love this band more than any other! the production has the purpose to let everyone hear the exact same thing we did the whole time it was being made and also to inspire creativity in everyone who hears it. i listened to the promise the next day after the show and felt the full power of them slaying 60,000 people with that song the night before

  • Fender Bottom Master review:
  • "Hello my name is Mike and I just tested out the new Fender baritone Bottom Masters guitar. Here is the result, First the scale leagth is shorter than the BASS VI and it feels more like a guitar. The neck is about the size of a Jaguars neck compared with the thin neck on the Bass VI(near the headstock). The body is basically a Jaguar's body with a stop tail piece instead of a floating temelo. There are only two pick ups compared to the BASS VI's 3, which makes the guitar sound different. That 3rd pickup makes a difference in sound. Second, the sound is different than the Bass VI. With the Bottom Master having a hard tail stop piece instead of the floating tremelo like the Bass VI, the sound is quite different. One thing is that the low E string is more stable and stays in tune better than the Bass VI( I own a Bass VI and found this to be a problem from time to time) But the low end and thick Bass VI sound is not there. The sound is too lite, no bang to it. You can feel the difference in playing. The fuzz unit built into the Bottom Master is not so good. It sounds like a cheap fuzz box. The guitar is missing the size and weight of the Bass VI. All and all I would give the Bottom Master a 6 out of 10 with 10 being the best. It is a fun guitar to play around with and it has it uses, but any one looking to emulate the sound of a Bass VI should look else where. Good guitar, but not a Bass VI. You can come close to the sound of one if you don't mind the more guitarist sound it has. You can get some low end but nothing like a Bass VI. Have fun"

    (Thanks Pizza)

  • Curespotting:

  • "Just to let you know that today, the DJ of Belgian radio PureFm asked during the show that we send him a mail with the one song that would last forever in our mind, and the reason behind it. I sent him my choice, which was A Night Like This. And during the show, he kept saying all the choices ppl had sent him, and while saying my choice, he said "Must say The Cure is the most popular choice". That proves that there's still a huge following here in Belgium ;-)

And for anyone interested, he's gonna play the most popular choices on Thursday and Friday ( not just The Cure, of course ) in Buzz, his show."

    (Thanks Olivier)

    "Playboy May 2004 issue,

    >From the Barometer section (page 23):

"It's May and... You can finally satisfy your outdoor-music jones early this year. The Coachella Valley Music Festival in Indio, California (May 1 and 2) is the season's first and best: Radiohead, Wilco, the Cure, the Flaming Lips, Air, Stereolab, Belle & Sebastian, Le Tigre and the reunited Pixies. Can't beat it with a pick."

    >From the Music Reviews section (page 34):

"BETA BAND - Heroes to Zeroes - These guys have a knack for taking familiar instruments and creating a modern sound. But unlike most bands tagged as experimental, they also have an ear for pop melodies. On their latest - and most consistent - album, you'll hear the chiming guitars of U2, pilfered drums from the Cure, funky blasts of vintage bass synth and, for good measure, horns and harmonicas, all chucked into a Technicolor stew. Tasty stuff. (Astral works) 3 starts - Tim Mohr"

    (Thanks Kate)

"Some diamond company called Helzberg’s Diamonds has been running ads for mother’s day on several TV channels here in Pittsburgh. One of these ads starts in a way which was oddly familiar, and after watching it a few times I realized it is the opening of Strange Attractions from WMS. Has anyone else noticed this?"

    (Thanks Uri)

"I thought I should let you know that the British band Shed Seven (between The Charlatans and Ride, sort of) has a single called 'why can't i be you?'. It is not a cover though, just a speed pop song, nice if you like brit pop, but wich such an unusual tittle, I thought it was worth noting."

    (Thanks Fabien G)

"I just bought something funny and maybe some of you might share my astonishment. i went to h&m yesterday and bought two ´hipster panties` with a `friday i´m in love` writing on it, no kidding. they´re selling it in red and and pink."

  • In case you missed it, all Coachella reviews are bing posted here, not on the news page.

  • The N.M.E. Coachella article has a list of celebs that attended Coachella, but they left out the best - Matt Chapman. He's the co-creator of the excellent and super awesome Homestarrunner site, and the voice for most of the characters, including big Cure fan Strong Sad. Rumors that The Cure's guitar problems were caused by another Strong Bad and The Cheat caper have NOT been confirmed. : )

  • Update: "for celebs, the best one I saw was Andy Dick, Steve MacDonald (from Redd Cross) and Adam Goldberg (from Dazed and Confused)."

  • Let Later...with Jools Holland know that you want The Cure:

  • "There is a new series of Later...with Jools Holland on BBC2 and everyone can send a mail about what they think about the line up...so come on and start sending mails. Go to www.bbc.co.uk/later/ and then go to "find out more about the acts on the show" ,go to the bottom and make them clear The Cure is popular... "

  • "Inbetween Days' on TOTP2:

  • "They just showed INBETWEEN DAYS on TOTP2 calling Robert "Mad Bob Smith" and the information that got shown during the song said stuff like "it's a busy year for The Cure, it's been 26 years since their first record... they've just played a few shows in America, there's been a box and still more to come before the end of the year." the commentator ended with "Robert's actually a nice guy."

  • Just got official confirmation that the song we are calling Happiest Day is actually called 'Before 3'.

  •

  • MP3's of the new songs:

Before 3 (aka Happiest Day) / mirror / mirror

The Promise / mirror / mirror

(Thanks to Bruno, Andreas & Eva)

  • Ok, forget everything else, stop whatever you're doing, and get over to Beach of Stone (click on Multimedia then Movies). There are streaming videos of Coachella, and you HAVE to hear the new songs! 'Lost' and 'The Promise' are very good, and will get better with time, but Happiest Day (or whatever it's called) is an instant classic to me! If you like the sad/wistful Cure songs, get ready to fall in love with it. I can't wait to hear the studio version! Ok, enough from me, I'm going to listen to it 20 more times. : )

  • (Thanks Bruno)

Update: "Just a trick in order to have all the streaming videos from coachella saved so we can view them also when we'r not connected to the internet.

First you have to see ALL the video one time from beachofstone.com. Them go into Temporary Internet files on your HD ( for XP users you have the files in \Documents and Settings\Your_User_Folder\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files)

Order the files by last accessed ( or by name). You should find all the files named like this: song%2010%20-%20newsong2_300k[1].flv ong%201%20-%20newsong1_300k[1].flv ....... and so on...

Copy all this files in one folder.

Than have the FLV player. Go get it on this url: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/flvplayer.html

Then open the player and play the flv filez!!!"

    (Thanks Carlo "Baga71")

  • A first attempt at the lyrics for 'Lost':

  • " I think I figured out the lyrics to "lost", although I think that the word "wail" should be replaced by a "p____" or "r____" - word. Perhaps some native speakers can help!

    LOST

    I can't find myself
    I can't find myself
    I can't find myself
    I can't find myself

In the haze of the stranger in love
Giving up holding on in this other world
    With arms around herself
    And I don't know where I am
    Did she really say goodbye?
    So happy and so young
    Can I stay?
cause I wail how the passion of the stranger in love
    holding on giving up
    in this other world
    that glimpse around her fall

    And I don't know where I am
    Did she really say goodbye?
    So happy and so young
    Can I stay?

    But I can't find myself
    I can't find myself
    I can't find myself
    I can't find myself

In the heart of a Stranger in love
Giving up going on in this other world
    that glimpse around her sun
And I'm not sure where I am
    Did she really say goodbye?
    So happy and so young
    Can I stay?
cause I wail how the passion of the stranger in love
    Holding on giving up
    in this other world
    That glimpse around herself

    I don't know where I am
    Did she really say goodbye?
    So happy and so young
    Can I stay?

    But I can't find myself
    I can't find myself
    I can't find myself
    I couldn't find myself

In the shadow of the stranger in love
    Giving up going on
    In this other world
    That glimpse around the sun
    I don't know where I am
    Did she ever say goodbye
    So happy and so young
    Can I stay?
cause I wail how the passion of the stranger in love
    In and out going on
    Holding on giving up
    in this other world
    that glimpse around the sun
    I don't know where I am
    Did she really say goodbye?
    So happy and so young
    Can I stay?

    I can't find myself
    I can't find myself
    I can't find myself

I got lost in someone else "

Update: "in the lyrics that are posted for "lost"...........

  • Robert interview on KROQ MP3's -

  • More Coachella t-shirts have been added to the gallery.

  • (Thanks Tiffanie and Mckevin)

  • Something from the Coachella show that everyone should know about:

  • "Since there has been so much said about the Coachella show I'm not going to write a full review, but there was something I wanted to mention. I was at the very front of the stage for most of the day on Sunday waiting to see The Cure. It was one of the hottest experiences of my life and I grew up in the Mojave Desert. Water was being sold for $2 a bottle and once you were at the front you had no chance of getting out to get it anyway. During one of the hottest parts of the day a security guard walked along passing out free bottles of water to the people at the front of the barricade. He said that it was courtesy of the band called The Cure. They wanted to make sure their fans had plenty of water. I thought that was a really nice gesture. Not many bands would be concerned with matters like that when they are relaxing back stage. Thank you to them."

    (Thanks John)

  • Old interview on Triple J this morning:

  • "This morning the radio station Triple J, here in Australia, replayed an interview that Richard Kingsmill did with Robert in 1993. Robert spoke about the 5 top tracks that have had the most amount of influence in his life. They are:

    1. Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix)

    2. Time has told me (Nick Drake)

    3. Starman (Bowie)

    4. The Faith Healer (Alex Harvey)

    5. Anarchy in the UK (Sex Pistols)

Although the interview was a bit old and I had heard it before, what I found most interesting was that the DJ then went on to say that the Cure's new album was being released in the US in June and was destined to hit our shores a few weeks after that. She also mentioned Robert had stated the album would be darker than recent albums. Playing the interview was a clever way of launching into the news of their new album. Exciting times! "

    (Thanks Lisa)

  • Can someone help Frank with this?

  • "I am a guitar "geek." So, I noticed right away when watching the Tonight Show, (and studying the pictures from the Coachella show), that Robert & Perry were no longer using Line 6 amps. I definitely can tell they are using Orange Amplifiers, but it also looks like there might be a Marshall half-stack involved for each of their set-ups. Does any one know?"

    (Thanks Frank)

Updates: "My friends and I noticed the Marshall amps as well. What's funny is that they cover the Marshall logo with black tape. Why cover the Marshall logo but not the Orange logo? Maybe some kind of sponsorship?"

    (Thanks Brian)

"I was a guitar tech, production manager and tour manager for various bands for a long time. I’ve had a bit of experience with these issues, and in response to the black gaff tape being over the Marshall logos, it IS a matter of endorsement. Exclusive endorsement contracts require bands to remove any references to competitors from gear used in anything that can be photographed or videotaped. "

    (Thanks Jason)

  • New t-shirts at Coachella. Two of them are here, and a description of the rest:

  • "Looks like Porl did them. There was also a black one with a white sun-like swirl and a grey one with a bunch of hearts with eyes. Oh yeah, and another blue one with a band shot and white one with a band shot. I just remembered another! There was a white one with another porl drawing. It had a man who was coming from the bottom of the shirt. If you tucked it in it would look like he was coming out of your pants. Does that make sense? They were selling a lot of Cure shirts too. It seemed like everyone was buying one. They had baby doll Ts and tank tops too!"

    Anyone have photos of these?

    (Thanks John)

  • Come on guys/girls, doesn't anyone have some MP3s of the new songs from Coachella...Please? I'm dying over here. : )

  •

  • More on the KROQ interview:

  • "The interview seemed at times to be a stock interview as either Kevin or Bean got to see Robert before the tonight show and asked some rather played out questions. Some of them include (roughly)...most people are depressed and have to think about being happy, when Robert sings and he is happy, does he have to think sad?... lame...we heard that Robert can only see 8 feet in front of him and everything else beyond that is just an impression...(prefers playing to larger crowds than small ones because of this)...His favorite show is NYPD Blue and he was upset because in England, the series that is ending here is beginning and he read in a US paper something that happens to Sipowitz...doesn't go online at home much because he doesn't have broadband, only dialup...at the studio he used the internet to play a search game on google...was very excited about seeing the bands yesterday and planned to be there about 2pm....

But some good stuff...the new album had 37 (I think) songs of which they went down to 20 and then 13....He was over making an album as he had done with Bloodflowers...(didn't play anything from Bloodflowers yesterday)...talked about the collaboration with Ross and how he encouraged them in the studio...some songs were played live, only three takes and they chose the best...Robert wanted to free up and play songs that reflected them and how they felt...a variety (I can't recall how he said this)...the interview was in two parts and lasted approx 10-15 min.

And they will be here in July and August, 25 shows, and he did "say" the show would end in Los Angeles (in so many words)..."

  • Robert on KROQ:

  • "In the KROQ interview, Robert said The Cure would tour in the US this summer, from July to August. The final show will be in August in Los Angeles.

Kevin and Bean on KROQ will post the interview on the KROQ.com website soon."

Hmm, seems like they might have shortened the tour a bit. Anyone have more details about the interview?

    (Thanks Lisa)

  • The BBC1's Ceefax Entertainment service picks up the Rock Walk story:

  • "The Cure are mentioned on BBC1's Ceefax Entertainment service. It reads.

Hollywood Walk Spot For The Cure.

British band The Cure have attended a ceremony in Hollywood giving them a place on it's coveted rock walk. Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Perry Bamonte and Roger O'Donnell each placed their hands in cement at the event on Sunset Boulevard. They join other music legends including Chuck berry, BB King and Ramones in featuring on the rock walk.

The Rock Walk was founded in 1985 as an alternative to the Hollywood walk of fame, for film and TV stars.

Strangely, there's no mention of Jason. "
