  • Best Buy IS selling the Brazilian Picture Show dvd! So is Tower Records and Media Play:
  • "Just wanted to confirm that best buy is indeed selling the picture show dvd. I saw it a couple days ago at the best buy in castleton here in Indianapolis, Indiana. "

    (Thanks Rob)

"About your inquiry for the Picture Show DVD. I have seen them in the Best Buys at San Diego, California stores as well at Tower Records (Sports Arena location). They were selling for around $25 US Dollars."

    (Thanks Gabriel)

"I recently purchased a copy of the picture show dvd at media play in rockford, illinois. Thought maybe someone in my area looking for it might like to know."

    (Thanks Donald)

"I wanted to let you know that the Media Play store in the Surrey Square Plaza in Cincinnati, Ohio is selling this dvd as well. They had one copy on the shelves that I bought about a month ago for around $22.95. They have more in stock now and are still selling them to this day. "

    (Thanks DJ X)

You can read some reviews of the dvd here and here.

  • Curespotting:
  • "Author/Professor Chet Reymo talks about The Cure's song "Jupiter Crash" for a few pages in his book "An Intimate Look at the Night Sky". The book is an Astronomy text and in that part, he writes about the events that that song is based on."

    (Thanks Trev)

  • Interesting article about the Trilogy dvd from Music Week:
  • Music Week - 3 May Issue.

ABBEY ROAD INT TAKES CONTROL OF CURE DVD

Trish McGregor, studio manager, Abbey road interactive: "It's a two-disc set of three albums played live - Pornography, Disintegration And Blood Flowers. The actual concerts were recorded across two nights in Berlin in November last year. Splinter Films were out there to shoot it, and they also shot a whole lot of atmospheric footage of Berlin, which we used in the menus and really captures the whole experience. The DVD it being released by Eagle Vision, but it was actually commissioned by the band themselves, so it was unusual in that it was a job, which didn't come from a label. We were approached initially by Robert Smith's management and then they sold it to Eagle, so it is just a different way of working. It's something I think we are beginning to see a bit more of now, where people are controlling their own content and selling it on for publishing. Trilogy was mixed in 5.1 at Olympic, mastered at Abbey Road and authored here at Interactive, and Robert Smith was involved all the time. The production company were obviously very involved too, so of course everyone was coming from a different angle: Robert just wants it to sound great, the production company want it to look great and Eagle want it on the shelves for June 2nd."

    (Thanks Chris)

  • I've had a report that Best Buy has just started selling that Picture Show dvd from Brazil (first reported on Dec. 6th, 2002). This seems pretty odd to me, but if you are going to BB soon anyway, you might want to look for it. If not, it would probably be best to call and ask about it before going there just for this (at least until there are more reports of finding it). This is what was listed on the receipt:
  • SALES ITEM

    5405714 DVD

    MUSIC DVD/MS PICTURE SHOW

    BAR CODE 4069 CURE PICTURE

    42-1 5405714 C111018

    MS B131 $22.99

If any one else finds a copy, please let me know (including the city and store location if possible).

Also, Tower Records seems to be selling it as a "special order" item on their website. But it only says Picture Show, no mention of The Cure, and it doesn't come up when searching for The Cure. Weird.

    (Thanks DJ X)

  • The Cure are featured on another compilation cd:
  • "Lovesong is part of an upcoming compilation put out by casey kasem - 'Casey Kasem: America's Top 10 Through The Years - The 80's'

  • Cure cover:
  • "Have you listened to a band called Autumnblaze? They cover COLD and it sounds GREAT. The Album is MUTE BOY SAD GIRL. Really good!!!!!!!!!"

    (Thanks Frank E.)

  • South Park repeat on German tv:
  • "German music TV VIVA will show episode 12 of South Park, "Mecha Streisand" (in which dear Robert saves the world once more), from 22:00 to 22:30 on 1 May (Thursday).

In case you should miss that: RTL has just started a re-run of series 1 of South Park aswell (eps. 1 was shown last weekend). They tend to be a bit sloppy with chronologically trustworthy broadcasting schemes, so better watch out for ep. 12 here yourself, some time within the next 11 weeks. "

  • Here's a look at the French pre-order forms for the Trilogy dvd:
  •

  • Does anyone know the US release date for Pornography? I know it was May 1982 in the UK, but what about in the US?

  • Comedy Central will be repeating the Saturday Night Live episode from 5/11/96 (featuring The Cure doing Mint Car and Inbetween Days) tomorrow (April 29th) at noon eastern and pacific.
  • (Thanks elc11)

  • Cure cover:

  • Curespotting:
  • "You might be interested to know that they played 'friday I'm in love' during a break in play of the super 12 Rugby being aired on TV in Australia on fox sports channel!"

    (Thanks F.J.)

"While watching Catalyst, an Australian science program on the ABC, I heard Lovecats being played to a story surrounding breeding problems with Cheetahs in captivity. For the animal lovers here, it had a happy ending with the Cheetah falling pregnant, the first time in Australia for years."

    (Thanks Greg)

"Yesterday night on RAI 3, an italian channel, during a special about Tony Blair and his political carreer I was very surprised to hear A Forest and other eightes songs."

    (Thanks Alessandro)

"BBC two broadcasts this crap (but it's just another) programme in which a guy goes around to fix gardens in people's houses (I think it's called "The city gardener" or something). This week they used the scream of "Give me it" when the poor jerk was sitting looking also a bit desperate as he could not find a solution to fix the pots so to make the garden look right. It used to be nice to hear Cure samples from time to time but now I hope someone can do something for it as I noticed that BBC lately used several samples of Cure songs in hopelessly disgusting formats."

    (Thanks Davide)

    "I have 2 Curespottings.

The last friday April 18th i went to the El Rollo Parque Acuatico (El Rollo Aquatic Park), near of the city of Cuernavaca, www.elrollo.com.mx, and after hours of playing only latino music from the speakers came out "BOYS DON´T CRY".

There is a Mexico City AM frequency radiosation Track 1320, www.track1320.com.mx, they have a program SOCIEDAD DEPORTIVA (SPORTS SOCIETY) and in the intro to its Champions League section they play a few seconds of "BOYS DON´T CRY"."

    (Thanks Jorge)

  • According to today's London Times, Jason Cooper and his girlfriend Alison have announced their engagement. Congratulations to them both, and may they have endless days of happiness together.

  • Back on April 12th, Dave Ace made the following observation, after finding 'Friday I'm in Love' on a free cd called 'The Midnight Hour: The 20 Sexiest Hits Of All Time':
  • "Forgive me if I'm wrong, as I do not have knowledge of The Cure's licensing arrangements or who ultimately has veto over these things, but it does seem like somebody in charge is allowing Cure songs to be used on any old crap these days."

Well, yes, and there's a pretty good reason you've been noticing it lately. Until fairly recently, Robert could control whether a song would appear on/in something, but a source close to the band says that "Robert has been fighting for 18 months at huge expense to get back control of the catalogue." I think its safe to say that all of us hope he wins this fight, and wins it very soon.

  • Happy Birthday and Best Wishes to Boris Williams. Cheers!

  • April 23rd

  • More on the Robert/Junkie XL collaboration:
  • "although there are promo copies of the new JXL album, robert's track isn't on there as it was a late addition (another track, the dave gahan one is also missing from the pre-release copy).

also, the broadcasts on the website should feature two-hour interviews (!) with every single artists featured on the disc, so watch out for a long robert smith special on that website in the near future. at least that's what tom holkenberg (aka mr junkie xl himself) told me in an interview recently."

    (Thanks Carsten)

  • For all of the Australian fans who have asked about the Trilogy dvd release date there, Eagle says it should be around the same time as the other releases (June 2nd/3rd).

  • Curespotting:
  • "Re: "As I was casually enjoying a climatic death scene in the British drama 'Holby City,' what other song than 'Lullaby' was used to conclude the episode.

Shame the 'spotters didn't leave the TV on for the programme that followed Holby City, "Life of Grime" narrated by nicest man on the planet John Peel.

During a sequence when Animal Welfare were removing local cats before the demolition of a tower block, they played "Lovecats"."

    (Thanks Warren)

"Just watched a Winona Ryder documentary on Channel4 (in England), titled "The Real Winona Ryder". Excellent, what better a combination than a mention of my favourite band while watching a TV show about my favourite girl !

When they got to the bit about her role in Beetlejuice, the narrator said Tim Burton clearly cast her for her gothic pin-up looks, and that her character in the movie instantly appealed to troubled adolescents who were obsessed with The Cure's Robert Smith.

Not sure why they picked on Robert specifically, but I thought it was an important reference for me. The movie Beetlejuice was quite important to me as a young teenager in that the strangeness of Ryder's character was something I could identify with, and this was right about the time I was getting into The Cure, so to have someone bring the two together has took me back a few years.

I'd be interested to know if either Tim Burton or Winona Ryder have ever said anything on record about The Cure.

For anyone interested in the actual documentary, don't worry - it was just one of Channel4's usual hatchet jobs where they focus solely on negative points.

Sorry to ramble on, but I gather there are one or two Cure fans out there who like Beetlejuice and Ms Ryder !!!"

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

"Just wanted to let you know that just now...about a minute ago ( I was just about to start zapping around) "A forest" was used as background music for the start of the football game Manchester United vs Real Madrid on german Television (RTL)"

    (Thanks Strangie)

    April 22nd

  • I've heard that promo copies of the Trilogy dvd should be going out very soon, so those of you fortunate enough to get one, please send in a review as soon as you can. <Shameless begging mode on> And if you should happen to get an extra one, or want to lend your copy to someone for a couple of days, e-mail me. <Shameless begging mode off>

  • Curespotting:
  • "As I was casually enjoying a climatic death scene in the British drama 'Holby City,' what other song than 'Lullaby' was used to conclude the episode. The song was being played in a middle class London Wine Bar by a group of musicians. I noticed that the composition was slightly slower and the opening bass slide was not as loud as Simon Gallup's."

"At the end of Holby City (BBC1) Tonight they played a song which i thought was Lullaby. It was the tune but not the lyrics and definitely not Roberts dulcet tones!! The lyrics i remembered were something about *looking through a pane of glass* and *leaves falling from the trees*?? Any idea what this could be??"

I'm guessing it might have been the Just Jack "Snowflakes/Lullaby" remix.

Update: Yes, it was Just Jack.

(Thanks Kirk & Jordan, Caz, Lauren and P.J.)

"Last saturday, on the MTV in Spain, was broadcasted a selection of Mtv´s Unpluggeds, among them, of course, The Cure unplugged in 1991.

And yesterday, in a Spanish radio station, named M80 radio, the locutor dedicated a song (Friday I´m in Love)for Robert Smith with the motif of to his birthday (Happy Birthday Robert!) in his music programme, named "Plásticos y Decibelios". He also commented that The Cure is going to release a new album soon."

    (Thanks Sharon)

  • The Laser's Edge is the first US e-tailer to list the Trilogy dvd. More stores should be adding it soon, so if you see it listed, and I don't have it included in the pre-order links, please let me know.

  • Happy Birthday and Best Wishes to Robert Smith. Cheers!

  • In a follow-up to that Garden of Dreams story from Saturday, it looks like they will also be doing a cover for the Jumping Someone Else's Jubilee tribute cd:
  • "We have been asked to contribute to two The Cure tribute compilations:

First: This year's official tribute album to The Cure to celebrate 25 years called "Jumping Someone Else's Jubilee". This release features All About Eve, Gene Loves Jezebel, Future Loop Foundation, Vicarious Bliss, GreenHaus, Mechanical Cabaret, Eat Static, The Cowboy Junkies, The Cureheads, and others scheduled for release on SONY in September. All royalties to go to Great Ormand Street Hospital in London.

Second: "Strange As Angels: a tribute to The Cure" which is scheduled to be released this summer. The compilation will feature various artists from around the country. We will be covering "To The Sky." More info will be posted soon."

I'll look into this "official tribute album" statement, as this is the first I've heard of it, and would be very suprised if the band had sanctioned it "official".

Update: As expected, the Jumping Someone Else's Jubilee cd IS NOT official. It wasn't Garden Of Dreams fault, they were just given some bad information.

    (Thanks Susan)

  • Looks like Magic is just now catching on to something we've all known for months now:
  • "The French music magazine Magic! (April 2003), after reminding that THE CURE left their "all time label" Fiction, inform their readers that the band has recently signed a 3 albums contract with the heavy metal structure "I am recordings". "

For those who missed the announcements, click here and here.

  • Vote Cure:
  • "On the Belgian Alternative Radio "Studio Brussel" you can vote for the best albums ever, last year The Cure was on the list with 2 albums "Disintegration" and Pornography". So, all vote and make the trilogy completed!!! www.stubru.be and go to album 100 stem nu."

  • Curespotting:
  • "Flipping through the channels a few minutes ago, I heard the distinct sound of Cut Here, when I waited to see what it was on, well sure enough it was MTV's Dismissed. I thought that MTV had abandoned real music for the pre-packaged teen angst and hip hop generation. Somebody there at the MTV machine listens to Cure and played it, capping off a great Friday night!"

    (Thanks Cambria)

    April 19th

  • Looks like there will be another new Cure tribute cd this year. This is from the Garden of Dreams e-mail newsletter:
  • "We are finishing up the recording of the song "To The Sky" for an upcoming Cure compilation called "Strange As Angels: a tribute to The Cure" which is scheduled to be released this summer. There should be a version online for your listening pleasure within the next few weeks. The compilation will feature various artists from around the country. More information on this soon."

  • Cure cover:
  • "I saw Tonic last night in Chattanooga, and they again played the first and last verse of "Pictures of You" in the middle of the song, "Count on Me." Lots of others, besides me, in the audience seemed thrilled to hear the Cure as they were singing along and screaming in between verses during this part. Of course they were also very excited during "Sweet Home Alabama" as well."

    (Thanks Jeff)

  • The Cure party in Prato, Italy on April 21st gets a write-up in La Nazoine:
  • "You've already issued a news about our party of monday 21th april in prato, italy. We will make a special party celebrating Mr Robert Smith birthday. We are asking you a special favour: today on our local newspaper called "La Nazione", there is the news regarding our party, with a very good article. We know that many Italian fans they usually do read your website, so please can you post this article?"

"This week (i believe it was monday) i was watching "Channel 1 News" in my homeroom at high school. It is basically just a news show that is on in the morning for Junior High/High School students around the US. Anyways, they were doing a segment of their show called "The Iraq Files", where they talk about different weapons and such being used in the war right now. I was surprised to hear the main guitar part of "Watching Me Fall" in the backround during this! This isn't the first time that they've played cure music on their show but it is the first time that I've remembered to send this in to chain of flowers. Yay for me!!!"

    (Thanks Bloodflower)

"Yesterday (4-16-03) on NPR they used "Other Voices" as background music for a story on the military recruiting in high schools. Also, a couple of months ago NPR used the introduction from "Friday I'm in Love" as the transition music between stories."

    (Thanks Jared)

    April 16th

  • More on the Robert / Junkie XL collaboration:
  • "Hey, i read the news about robert working on the new junkie xl album and, needless to say, i was pretty stoked at the idea of hearing new material. i set out to find any information i could on the record, and came across a fan site that had a bit of info. the address is http://www.junkiexl.nl/.

The site gives a tracklist for the album (a 30-track double album, with a bonus track on the uk & japanese issues), and details of which artist worked on what tracks. apparently, robert worked on a track called 'perfect blue sky', the first discs closing track. the album is supposed to get a worldwide release on june 2, 2003 and junkie xl will start a promotional internet radio broadcast scheduled to begin may 5, 2003 at RadioJXL.com, which i would imagine will be airing much of the album. the RadioJXL.com website currently has a mailing list that will notify members of the stations first broadcast."

    (Thanks Jason)

"Planet Sound (UK Teletext) said today that the Junkie XL album (the title Planet Sound gave was "Radio JXL") is released in the UK on June 2nd. The first single from the album is "Catch Up To My Step" featuring Solomon Burke, which is released in the UK on May 26th. Robert and Dave Gahan were both mentioned (along with the other artists mentioned elsewhere) but no word on song titles, etc, or if any other songs would be singles."

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Here is an interesting Curespotting for skateboarding fans:

The new Emerica Skateboard Shoes Video "This is Skateboarding" features Kevin Long who skates to "Close to Me." It is the remix version that appears on "Mixed Up" and "Galore." The video is great, too. This is the only Cure song I have ever heard in a skate video, but there may be more."

    (Thanks Eric)

    April 15th

  • Robert works with Junkie XL:
  • "taken from the dance music news website http://www.xpander.nl

Junkie XL to work with The Cure and Depeche Mode

Anything that the man touches at the moment seems to turn into gold. Dutchman Tom Holkenborg a.k.a Junkie XL has announced Robert Smith from The Cure and Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode as the artists that have contributed to his forthcoming album 'Radio JXL, A Broadcast From The Computer Hell Cabin'. Other artists to appear on his album are Gary Numan, DJ Sasha, Peter Tosh, Australia's Infusion, Dutch singer Anouk, Public Enemy's Chuck D and of course Republica's Saffron who also sang on his last smash 'Beauty Never Fades'.

Tom told the VPRO that he was already working with most of these people before the commercial success of Elvis' 'A Little Less Conversation' that was originally written for a Nike commercial. Although he admits that things became a lot easier after the song went straight to #1 in several countries around the world.

Although Junkie XL began as a band in 1995 including a drummer, a scratcher, a rapper, a guitarist and a vocalist, Tom is happy to be working on his own now. Despite all the music he's made and the soundtracks he has also written for computer games, he says that co-producing Sasha's album 'Airdrawndagger' was the highlight of his career as a producer as he really developed himself in producing dance music.

Tom has invited several artists including Gary Numan, Solomon Burke and Grant Nicholas for his performance at Holland's Pinkpop festival next week. More artists to be announced!

Junkie XL has upcoming live shows at Skolbeats Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil and Roskilde Festival in Denmark. (15/04/03)"

  • 'South Park' Hits 'Highs' When It Comes to Music Sun Apr 13, 3:53 PM ET

    By Ray Richmond

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - >From that first episode of "South Park" on Aug. 13, 1997, it was clear that music was going to be a key element of the show.

It was then that "Shaft" veteran Isaac Hayes (news), in the role of Chef, was inspired to sing a little ditty to the young children of South Park Elementary School that detailed his desire to make passionate love to a woman. The show has since memorably featured not only Hayes on a regular basis in his recurring role but other artists as well in their musical history.

"South Park's" off-kilter theme song was recorded by the band Primus. Both Robert Smith of the rock group the Cure (during the February 1998 episode "Mecha-Streisand") and the band Korn (in October 1999's "Korn's Groovy Private Ghost Mystery") have also contributed.

Christmas episodes featuring the excrement-based character Mr. Hankey have been made into musicals unto themselves. Let's not forget that the 1999 feature "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" was itself a musical -- one with an Oscar-nominated song, no less: "Blame Canada."

It just so happens that "South Park's" co-creators, co-producers and co-conspirators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are trained musicians who were in a band together at one time. Stone was a music major in college, and music always seems to be the prism through which they relate to everything else.

"When 'South Park' first went on the air, it felt more like we were in a punk band than a TV show," Stone admits. "We still view our seasons more like albums. Each episode is like an album cut to us. We talked about how we felt kind of like the Beatles in the beginning, as far as how we were treated and where we were in our lives."

Parker recalls that when the show originally caught fire, the duo referred to it as their "rock star phase."

The people in the entertainment business whom Parker and Stone have the most respect for invariably continue to be musicians, Parker says. "When 'South Park' got huge, they told us we could meet whoever we wanted to. We didn't care about Jerry Seinfeld (news). We wanted to meet the Cure and Elton John (news). To our mind, music people actually do something.

"And that's still who we want to hang out with," Parker continues. "We'd much rather be with musicians than anybody in the TV or comedy communities."

Parker and Stone have been able to keep their love of music going even as they built the TV series into a long-running phenomenon. The December 1998 disc "Chef Aid: The South Park Album" featured contributions from the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Meatloaf, Rick James and Devo; it went platinum in the United States and sold more than 2 million copies worldwide.

The other "South Park" albums, including the movie soundtrack as well as 1999's "Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics" and the 2000 single "Timmy & the Lords of the Underworld," also have done well.

But it's on the TV show itself that the most memorable music has been created -- much of it generated by Stone, Parker and Hayes.

"Making songs is probably the most fun of everything we get to do," Stone believes. "The bottom line is that we're both really just frustrated rockers."

just another cure name-drop...about half-way into the article alison moyet says something about being in the same small class as someone in depeche mode and someone who eventually joined the cure. "

Update - "In that Alison Moyet interview, she is referring to Perry Bamonte as the person who joined the cure. He is from the same hometown as Depeche Mode, Alison, and Vince Clarke."

  • So did Robert really do the artwork for the Trilogy dvd? A source close to the band says that "Robert did not design the artwork for the DVD, Eagle's art department did, and Robert did not even want himself on the cover!" This directly contradicts what Eagle had said earlier, so I asked them again if it was Robert or the Eagle art dept. and this was the reply from Robert Gill: "My understanding is Robert Smith has done the artwork".

  • Roadies repeat today:

  • Anybody have a clue about this one?
  • "I was in a restaurant last week and I heard a song that clearly samples "Other Voices". The track had female vocals, and I loved it. Do you have any idea who/what that is?"

Update: The song is probably "Let Love" by Res from her CD, "How I Do". Hear a clip of it at CD Universe.

  • Cure cover:

  • "I saw this short film last night at the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.. It was about 15minutes long and set in 1988 - full of lots of cure references, people wearing cure tshirts and lockers with cure postcards!

One Fine Morning - Cure loving boy falls in love with a guy who wears mind-bogglingly beautiful eyeliner. Dir. Scot Boswell/USA 2002/16 mins

It was screening alongside the main feature "Stories from the Road" - about a group of fans following PJ Harvey on tour."

"I just want to let you know that Simon Gallup is mentioned in the article you can read below. Interpol is a very very good band. Yesterday I saw them live and it gave me the same feeling as seeing The Cure in the beginning of their career.

With their expansive sound, dark wit, and a flair for the dramatic, Interpol have gone from being one of the New York City's most talked about new bands to becoming one of America's most exciting and acclaimed. Fulfilling the promise shown on their three previous EPs, Interpol's full length debut, Turn On The Bright Lights, establishes the quartet as a major force despite their brief tenure. It is a filler-free, fully realized statement of intent; few debut albums have sounded this confident or displayed as much emotional range.

Singer/guitarist Paul Banks' angelic exterior belies his twisted lyrics and macabre vocals. Bassist Carlos D. carries much of the mood; while his forceful approach reflects early influences John Paul Jones (Zep) and Clifford Lee Burton (Metallica), other faves like John Taylor (Duran) and Simon Gallup (Cure) are more evident in his rubbery, melodic playing. Daniel Kessler's guitar cuts it straight down the middle with an incredibly atmospheric sound, owing as much to current electronic music as the pop bands of his youth. And though Interpol technically formed in 1998, it wasn't until Sam Fogarino replaced their original drummer in 2000 that they developed the focus and authority that characterizes their current sound.

Turn on the Bright Lights was created at Connecticut's Tarquin Studios in November 2001, recorded by Pete Katis and mixed by Gareth Jones (Clinic, Depeche Mode). Tarquin Studios occupies the top floor of a 150 year-old house which once served as a hospital for mentally impaired children, and where the Interpol boys felt strangely at home. Of the intense recording schedule, Dan remembers, "The 'Outside,' as we called it, took on mystic proportions by the end. We hadn't had any contact with anyone but ourselves for a few weeks, so when someone went out to the store or for a walk, it was like they were venturing out into the wild. It was authentic cabin fever." www.matadorrecords.com/interpol/biography.html

"Last Wednesday night at work, we were on our first break, and in the cafeteria there are tvs tuned to CNN Headline News. As they were going to commercial break, Friday Im In Love was used for bumper music instead of the usual Headline News jingle."

"The Mail On Sunday (newspaper in England) give away a free CD every few weeks, and I've just come across one of those CD's lying about which I hadn't taken any notice of when we got the newspaper the week it was given away, but I was surprised to find a Cure track on it.

The CD is titled "The Midnight Hour: The 20 Sexiest Hits Of All Time" and it features Friday I'm In Love, although so much care and attention has been taken with this compilation that somebody has gone to the bother of listing the song as "Friday I'm Love".

It's frightening enough that Friday should be listed as a sexy hit, but what's more worrying is the company the song shares on the CD. Just for your amusement, some of the other tracks on the CD are: Boyz 2 Men "I'll Make Love To You", 10CC "I'm Not In Love", Joe Cocker "Up Where We Belong", Robert Palmer "Addicted To Love" (ahh, I wonder if Simon knows his band is sharing space with Mr Palmer?), Lionel Richie & Diana Ross "Endless Love", Boyzone "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight".

Forgive me if I'm wrong, as I do not have knowledge of The Cure's licensing arrangements or who ultimately has veto over these things, but it does seem like somebody in charge is allowing Cure songs to be used on any old crap these days.

That title once more: "The Midnight Hour: The 20 Sexiest Hits Of All Time" !!!!!!!

  • Cure cover:
  • "Sunday, April 6, 2003

I just attend the Guster concert in Claremont, California at Bridges Auditorium at the Claremont Colleges with my best friend for his birthday, and had the best time.

At the end of the encore set, Guster’s lead singer thanks the crowd for coming out and wants to have special guests to come out and perform with them.

The intro goes like, “We had the privilege to meet one of our favorite bands out in Los Angeles, where they are currently recording a new album. We made some calls to meet them at the studio and jam with them, and invited them out with us tonight. I want to introduce to you the greatest and most influential bands in the whole world, THE CURE!!!”

The guys come out from the back stage area, and the crowd is going nuts! Everyone was screaming Robert’s name, while I was screaming, “Oh my God!” over and over again. The guys picked up their respective instruments, and Guster and The Cure proceeded to play Boys Don’t Cry.

I guarantee you no one in the crowd expected The Cure of all bands to play with Guster, but they were there in the flesh."

Well, maybe in spirit, but definitely not in the flesh. Apparently, not many Guster fans actually know who The Cure are, as it was a joke. "The Cure" were actually Barenaked Ladies, who did join Guster for a cover of Boys Don't Cry.

    (Thanks Leah)

  • Everyone is all excited about that new Pollstar listing of a Cure show in Spain this August, but it is most likely an error. Notice that it is listed for the same date and festival as last year (August 2nd at Benicassim), and that the line-up of bands are identical to last year's schedule. I'll look into it, but I'm pretty sure it's a Pollstar error.
  • Update - As expected, this an error. The Cure will not be there this year.

  • French tv channel France 2 is looking for an "old" (30-35) Cure fan:

"couple of cure mentions in this week's nme too!

article on the rapture: "it was the DFA who took The Rapture from being a so-so indie band, a stars in their eyes Cure (check out the vocal on single 'Olio' for a spot-on Robert Smith) to something more interesting".

and i thought robert vetoed the 'cure' on stars in their eyes! (a uk talent show where contestants impersonate celebs)

    and...

vox pop with Har Mar Superstar on the White Stripes:

    q: Jack White is...

har mar: "Our generation's Robert Smith. And i think we should all feel very lucky about that."

and there was me thinking that Robert Smith was our generation's Robert Smith.

  • The Cure recorded another session for the Dom Joly show the other night, they apparently played The Kiss and Just Like Heaven. No word on when this will air yet, but I'll post it as soon as I know.

  • Well, for everyone who thought the DVD cover artwork was poor, and blamed it on Eagle Vision, your anger was misplaced:
  • "I sent a mail to EAGLE ROCK just to say that the artwork is not beautiful (it's my opinion) and you can find the answer of ROBERT GILL (vp marketing & promotion):

"The Irish-American rock band Tonic [www.tonic-online.com] is doing an acoustic tour this summer. Each show is in a small club...or as Tonic says "living room setting." When I saw them on Fri, March 28 in Atlanta, they improvised a lot. The most notable improv of the night was PICTURES OF YOU!!!! In the middle of their song Count on Me, they went into Pictures without missing a beat. They sang the first verse; played a little of the song without lyrics, and then sang the last verse. Then without missing a bit went back into their song. I don't know if they do this every time they play Count on Me, but they did it that night. Just wanted to let you know."

    (Thanks C Mitchell)

"Up and coming UK rock band Hell Is For Heroes played their cover of Boys Don't Cry on BBC 3's Re:covered show on Friday. Not sure when it will be screened. The cover will also feature as one of the b-sides on the bands new single 'Retreat', out in May."

"Also in this week's issue of nme, there is an article on how to dress like a rock star (!). under the section on 'smeared lipstick', we read...

"The first pop star to popularise this look wasnt a girl at all, it was a bloke - Robert Smith, frontman of The Cure. He used to top off his already extraordinary combo of rats' nest hair, wicked eyeliner and supernatural pallor with a gash of crimson lippy kept rough around the edges".

...piece goes on to say how hard this look is to pull off, but karen o (yeah yeah yeahs) and courtney love also pull it off. pamela anderson doesnt. thrilling stuff. there is a picture of robert clasping his hands together.

    quality journalism."

    (Thanks Dom)

"Planet Sound (UK Teletext Channel4) has made another reference to The Cure, although it's a small one this time. There's a news story on page 161 today about this years Glastonbury Festival (no, don't get excited - it's not The Cure!).

The piece mentions that Prince had been favourite to headline the closing day (Sunday) but that negotiations faltered and it now looked unlikely. It went on to say that a big name act, possibly The Pretenders, would take the place of Prince on the bill - and then it said that the final act on the Sunday is usually a "veteran" act such as David Bowie or The Cure.

I'm guessing there's a Cure fan at Planet Sound as I've reported several mentions now, it could be quite a good thing as I understand that they get tens of thousands of readers a day. Be interesting to see how much coverage the band gets nearer single/album release time."

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

"here we go again: another apple-cure-spotting...
