  • Well, looks like the Rock Masters dvd is back in limbo:
  • "The Tower Rrecords sale of The Cure's Rock Masters DVD has been put on hold. Tower Records was once again told that they could not release it & to pull it and ship it back to the main warehouse or end up being fined & blacklisted for future DVD releases."

    (Thanks DJ X)

Still waiting to hear about Best Buy, but I'm sure they were told the same thing. And here's the official line from Image:

    Dear Sean,

Thank you for your inquiry. The release dates on all of the Rock Master titles have been postponed to a later date. New release dates for all of the Rock Master titles should be issued soon. You can check the Image web site (www.image-entertainment.com) periodically for the new release dates.

    Thanks again for your inquiry.

Also, I know many on-line stores have it listed, but unless it says IN STOCK or NOW SHIPING, they don't actually have it. Thanks to everyone who helped out with this.

  • Cure featured in a Princess Di ballet:
  • "Yesterday on Finnish MTV3 they told about a ballet in Denmark that has music by The Cure. You could hear at least Lovesong in the background. This means they seem to have the original versions to dance to, not some re-composed versions or so. Here is the full story translated and a link to the page with the videoclip as well.

    Princess Diana as a ballet

The Diana Ballet will have its world premier tomorrow in Denmark. In the ballet by Peter Schaufuss, a close friend of Dianas, performs over 25 world famous ballet dancers - in the main role of course a thin Brittish-born ballerina. And on stage we can of course also see Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles dressed up in riding wear. The dance is - of course - done to the music of The Cure, a Brittish band known for its gloomy pop music.

Princess Diana Ballet to Open in Denmark

By JAN M.OLSEN Associated Press Writer

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Turning the life of Princess Diana into a ballet was not an easy project for Peter Schaufuss.

Schaufuss, a former international ballet star who has created dances based on Elvis Presley and the Beatles, said Friday that it would have been easier to do a ballet about Hans Christian Andersen, the famous Danish author of fairy tales.

"We all believe we know him, we have read about him and that allows us to add some more to his character," he said in an interview with The Associated Press.

"With Diana it was a different situation. I knew both persons - Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, and the person behind that. Knowing her made it more difficult to make the show."

Schaufuss spent a year creating the two-hour work, "Diana - The Princess," which opens Feb. 27, in Holstebro, 190 miles northwest of Copenhagen.

British ballerina Zara Deakin, a member of Schaufuss' troupe, will play Diana, who was killed in a 1997 car crash in Paris. Sean Ganley, also of Britain, will play Prince Charles.

Other characters include Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and members of Britain's royal family. One dancer will play Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince Charles' constant companion.

Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in London in 1981 during a ceremony often described as a fairy-tale wedding. The couple divorced in 1996.

The music is by British composer Edward Elgar, the rock band The Cure and two Danish composers. Schaufuss chose The Cure because they were "big names in the 1980s" when the wedding took place.

The ballet, which will eventually tour Denmark, is not a biography, Schaufuss said, it's a tribute.

"We will show parts of a person's life," he said. "Performers who don't use words can do a tribute much more easily. Those who use words can be misunderstood if there are spoken nuances."

Schaufuss met Diana in 1986 when he was in charge of the London Festival Ballet, which later became the English National Ballet. Diana eventually became its patron.

"She was a ballet dancer as a child and as an adult she was a very good amateur dancer," he recalled. "I once asked her, 'Madam, don't you think somebody one day will do a ballet inspired by your life?' She replied, 'No,' and smiled."

Schaufuss has danced with the New York City Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet and the Kirov Ballet, in the 1970s and the 1980s. He also was the artistic director of the English National Ballet, the Berlin Ballet and the Royal Danish Ballet before returning to Denmark in 1997 to form his own company.

  • The ArtistDirect Records signing is now official, and The Cure have committed to a 3 record deal:
  • I AM RECORDINGS/ARTISTdirect Records SIGNS THE CURE

Los Angeles, CA - February 27, 2003 -- Ross Robinson had the fever; now he's got The Cure.

Known for his production wizardry on projects with KoRn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Sepultura, At The Drive-In, and the red-hot punksters The Blood Brothers, Robinson fulfills a lifelong ambition to work with the legendary British band by signing them to his own imprint, I AM Recordings/ARTISTdirect Records.

"The Cure has been my favorite band for years and years", he says. "They were instrumental in my approach to production. It was The Cure that opened me up to a more sensitive, heartfelt type of music, and I've been extremely loyal to that feeling in every project I've done since then".

Led by charismatic singer/guitarist/songwriter Robert Smith, The Cure played a seminal role in launching Modern Alternative Rock after their emergence in the late '70s. In the years that have followed, the band has released a long string of hit albums and singles, during which their sound has constantly evolved, from the darkly ambitious early albums "Seventeen Seconds", "Faith", and "Pornography", into the more accessible, pop-inflected "The Head On The Door", and "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me", onto the landmark, "Disintegration", and hugely successful "Wish", through to their most recent Grammy-nominated "Bloodflowers".

The band's current lineup, which includes Smith, Simon Gallup on bass, Perry Bamonte on guitar, Jason Cooper on drums, and Roger O'Donnell on keyboards, and will begin work on its I AM/ARTISTdirect Records debut in London in July. For Robinson, the opportunity to finally produce The Cure represents his most exciting creative opportunity.

"I was backstage at KROQ's Weenie Roast years ago", he recalls, "where I noticed The Cure's road cases. I remember saying, 'If these cases are ever in a recording studio with me, and I'm producing these guys, then I'll just quit the business after that'. What could possibly follow producing The Cure"?

Answer: producing two more albums by The Cure, who have committed to three releases on I AM Records/ARTISTdirect Records. Robinson savors the thought: "Miracles", he concludes, "do happen".

    (Thanks Jason)

    And from Billboard:

The Cure Signs To I AM/ARTISTdirect

Seminal U.K. modern rock act the Cure has signed a three-album deal with producer Ross Robinson's ARTISTdirect Records imprint, I AM. Led by singer/guitarist Robert Smith, the band and Ross are expected to begin work in London in July on a new album.

"The Cure has been my favorite band for years and years", Robinson said in a statement. "They were instrumental in my approach to production. It was the Cure that opened me up to a more sensitive, heartfelt type of music, and I've been extremely loyal to that feeling in every project I've done since then." Robinson is best known for producing acts on the heavier side of the music spectrum, including Limp Bizkit, Korn, Sepultura, Slipknot, and At The Drive-In.

Smith is the only original remaining member of the band he founded in the mid-1970s. Bassist Simon Gallup has been with the Cure since 1980 (save for a 1982-85 hiatus), while keyboardist Roger O'Donnell joined in 1988. He left in 1991, only to return in 1993, when his replacement, one-time roadie Perry Bamonte, switched to guitar and has remained in that post. Drummer Jason Cooper joined in 1995, replacing decade-long member Boris Williams.

The as-yet-unnamed Cure album will be the group's 14th studio album. The band's last studio set, 2000's "Bloodflowers," debuted and peaked at No. 16 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 285,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Like all of the group's previous albums, it was released through Fiction, it's U.K. label home, and Elektra in the U.S.

I was watching on the Vocal Training of Davey Havok from AFI on their official website. It started out with Davey talking about Freddie Mercury of Queen and how he had went to a local store I'm guessing to pick of pictures of singers that influenced him. As he started to name off the different singers he mentioned Robert Smith. He hung up all these posters around his booth so he could look at them while he was singing. Davey is a really big fan of The Cure. He usually mentions them in his interviews as one of his influences. In the January issue of Alternative Press Davey named off his favorite love songs. He picked The Cure's Love song has one of them stating :

"I believe I once read in and interview where Robert Smith said, that contrary to popular belief, he has written but three love songs-but boy, did he decide to write them, did he ever go all out. This is one of the best love songs of all time. In the days of mix-tape love letter, including "Love Song" was a must."

This article is on the afireinside.net"

    (Thanks Lindsey)

"On the site of punk super rockers AFI you can find 2 really interesting Cure-related articles. One is on March 2003 for Stuff magazine, and the other is on January 2003 for Alternative press.

The first one is a weird story about how the singer got offered a goth-mother+daughter-3-some after singing the Cure to them. And the second is a pick of Davey Havok's (the lead singer) favourite love songs...

    Check them out here http://www.afireinside.net/features/index.php

By the way, AFI has a superb cover of "The Hanging Garden" on their "A Fire Inside" EP. Which of course is my No. 2 Maddest Cure cover of all time. Second to whoever does (respectably of course) The Lovecats.

I am sure this will be one of the "I have heard from this band..." So remember the name... In fact, check out their records because they are incredible (Start with "The Art of Drowning" or "Black sails in the Sunset")."

    (Thanks Emilio)

"They just played a preview for the next episode of Smallville on E4 and used 'Close to Me' as the backing track -I think it was the 'closer mix' from Mixed Up."

"Yesterday, 18 February, about 11.50 p.m., I was watching Zelig, an Italian cabaret show; an actor has compared the hair of his person to Robert Smith's hair, the singer of the Cure, he said. It was unexpected, and funny."

    (Thanks Francesca)

"SUNSHINE COAST DAILY, Saturday Feb 1, 2003

There was a review of Triple J’s Hottest 100 weekend. On this weekend they play the 100 tracks, which have been voted for by the public.

Direct quote : “The annual countdown featured a new record for Dave Grohl who has now beaten the previous title holders, THE CURE, for number of songs in the Hottest 100. In 1991, THE CURE had nine. In 2003, Dave Grohl had ten.”

What I find funny is that The Cure made it as ONE BAND but Dave Grohl made it with THREE BANDS – Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters and Nirvana.

They go on to say : “The one that pushed him over the top, knocking off THE CURE and helping him score 10% of the entire tally was Nirvana you know you’re right at #12.”

My second cure spotting was for an Australian mag called “BLUNT” issue 16. The article is about “The 50 best punk bands ever.” On page 23, they mention SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES. In the paragraph about them they say “Her band the Banshees (which sometimes consisted of the cure’s Robert Smith).”

  • Article about the Trilogy dvd from Sympatico.com:
  • The Cure Get Dark On DVD

    Tuesday January 28, 2003 By ChartAttack.com Staff

Children of the twilight unite! The Cure are going to release their Dark Trilogy concert on DVD!

This past November, The Cure performed a duo of concerts in Berlin dubbed the "Dark Trilogy" concerts. It was a Cure fan’s dream come true — the band performed their three darkest albums, Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers, in their entirety. According to EMI Canada, the concerts have been preserved for eternity on a special DVD. The three-disc set is tentatively slated for release on May 20.

While casual fans may know The Cure for their jangly pop songs like "Just Like Heaven" or "Friday I’m In Love," many true Cure disciples hold the so-called Dark Trilogy as the band’s best work. Pornography, the band’s fourth album, was released in 1982. Hailed as a mope-rock masterpiece, the album paved the way for the slightly lighter Disintegration, which came out in 1989. Disintegration wove together the murky dourness of Pornography with the poppier fare that the band released throughout the rest of the ‘80s.

Then came Bloodflowers, which is The Cure’s most recent studio album. Released in 2000, Bloodflowers surprised many critics who expected the aging band to release a throwaway has-been album. Instead, the record follows the formula of Pornography and Disintegration, thus completing the trilogy.

Few details regarding the upcoming DVD have been released at this time. It’s also unknown if the band plan to play any future Dark Trilogy concerts. The Cure’s last release was their 2001 Greatest Hits compilation.

    (Thanks Colin)

  • There's a posting on the Sophie Ellis Bextor forum claiming that BFBS had a story on Feb. 8th in which they said the following:

  • New interview with Robert on German/French tv:
  • "The Cure will appear in "TRACKS", the music programme of the german/french TV-Channel Arte on Friday, February 21st at 7:00 PM CET. Here´s the text from Arte.de:

"The Cure - They´re still alive, aren´t they? When it comes to the british Mope-Rockers The Cure this question appears quickly. After a wild and successful decade full of hits like "Boys don´t cry" and "Lovecats", Frontman Robert Smith is announcing the split of his band for a few years now - but, for their fans comfort: They´re still there, more active than ever. They just recorded a Live-DVD of their Trilogy "Pornography", "Disintegration" and "Bloodflowers" - and there should also appear a few new tunes in 2003. Reasons enough for an interview with mastermind Smith."

  • Upcoming London fan gathering:
  • "I know it is a long time before, but just so you can put it in your diaries....I am organising a Curedrink on April 26th, in London, UK. The venue has not been confirmed yet (well, almost...) but it is looking like it will be held at The Marlborough Head - this is the same pub as the Curedrink was at last year before the Hyde Park show. We can play Cure music throughout, and kids are also permitted - all smashing!!!!! :-) We may even turn it into a DVD-arrival-party....or just a belated Robert's birthday party....or just a Cure piss-up for a laugh!!!! I will keep everyone updated the closer it gets to the date! Anyone got any questions or suggestions please email me: nixnie@yahoo.com"

  • More reports about This Is Dom Joly:
  • "About the programe last night: the whole point of it was that Dom Jolly plays an annoying person who upsets all his guests. So it was all acted, i think that was rather obvious. It was after all not just Robert. Poor Wayne Hemmingway got lumbered with a stalker which was of course a set up and he also spend the whole show looking angry. Be sure that if any off the guests had been generaly annoyed, the show would never have been aired at all. Liked the airguitar playing bears dancing to the cure though!"

    (Thanks Vicky)

"On 'This Is Dom Joly' last night The Cure performed two songs and Robert was involved in a very breif Q+A session with the audience. Inbetween Days was shortened and Robert immediately messed up the opening line to 'Yeserday I got so old it made me want to die' . It was a decent performance although the actual sound quality was kind of blurry. Dom Joly came up to Robert after the song and asked him if he liked the dancing bears around the stage to which Robert replied in a rather sarcastic tone 'yes it was very funny' which made the crowd laugh. Dom Joly then gave Robert a hug saying 'they remind me of you Robert' and Robert said 'I thought thats why they were there'. Robert was very quick witted and funny throughout but appeared very uncomfortable and moody, I think this was 'staged' though because all of his guests were pissed off throughout the course of the show! I think all the guests are meant to be somewhat disgruntled by Dom's ego or something. To finish the programme, a very edited version (possible only about 90 seconds) of 'A Night Like This' was played, again with dancing bears and a dancing Dom Joly! The sound was again very blurry, but i thought it sounded better than Inbetween Days did...if only we got to see the full version. Overall I'd say it was a very enjoyable show. (There was nothing wrong with Jason's drumming, I have always found him to be an excellent drummer both live and on record)"

    (Thanks Tom)

"here is an excerpt for an article in Media Guardian last week:

This is Dom Joly, Sunday, 10pm. A spoof chat show from Mr Trigger Happy TV in which Joly picks apart the notion of celebrity - parodying the figure of the self-obsessed host and, with his own At Home with... video diary inserts, producing his own Osbournes-ish reality soap. Like Larry Sanders but 10 years later, on a smaller budget and with naffer guests. Any show that even seems to humiliate Wayne Hemingway is, they say, fine by the panel. It reminds Laura, who liked the randomness of Trigger Happy, of Vic Reeves' Big Night Out "though not as funny. Calculated rather than glorious." Sharon notes, "He looks nervous and seems to overcompensate for it by shouting and 'being wacky'." "If it was on BBC2's Comedy Night after Never Mind the Buzzcocks, I'd probably watch it," says Laura. "But I don't know whether I'd tune in specifically to see it, though. And I didn't like the set." All agree and feel a little sorry for demographically-spot on musical guests, The Cure.

    (full article: http://media.guardian.co.uk/mediaguardian/story/0,7558,887504,00.html)"

  • Cure Cover:
  • "The Cure have been mentioned on Planet Sound (UK Teletext Channel4 Page 161) again today, wow - that's two times in as many weeks. They must be fans or something (joke). Hell Is For Heroes are covering Boy's Don't Cry as "b-side" on their next single "Repeat" (not the one that was released today).

From Planet Sound: "It was a favourite of all five of us when we were teenagers, even though we didn't all know each other then" Justin Schlosberg told Planet Sound. "We've messed about with it totally. For me that's the point of a cover. Treat it with affection, have some fun, just don't try to repeat the original".

No release date was stated for the next single, although as they only just released a different single today (in Britain) a release date has most likely not been set yet. "

  • The Cure played Inbetween Days & A Night Like This on This Is Dom Joly:
  • "Just watched the show and my only questions is, “was Robert really as pissed off and uncomfortable as he appeared?” He’s either taken acting lessons or genuinely wasn’t happy about being asked questions by the audience.

They played 2 songs, Inbetween Days and Night Like This to an audience of dancing bears – surreal but funny."

    (Thanks Steve)

"The band played two tracks tonight on Dom Joly, Inbetween Days and A Night Like This. Both were shortened versions, Inbetween Days missed a couple of bars from the end, A Night Like This was just the first verse, the first chorus and the end bit....quite a shame.

As seems to happen too often these days the mix was pretty poor, Perry's 6-string bass being all but inaudible on Inbetween Days (and Robert's accoustic drowned everybody out!!) and the mix for A Night Like This was pretty muddy and unclear. I have to say although I think Jason is great on studio records I remain a little unimpressed with him live. His drumming on Inbetween Days was rather pedestrian and he doesn't ever seem to want to attempt the drum-rolls that Boris does on the record. Still, that's all just my opinion.

I've waited all these months to finally see this episode of Dom Joly and to hear them play dull versions of two 18 year old songs was a tad disappointing. Here's to the new album then...."

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

Note: This appearance was taped last May! Here's what I posted back on May 17th, 2002:

Cure rehearsing for the Dom Joly show:

"I walked past a studio today (5-16-02) to the sounds of the cure! I went into the viewing gallery and found them rehearsing Inbetween days and a night like this for something called "the dom joly programme". "

Update: "They were in TC8 at BBC Television Centre (which is in West London) rehearsing. I think the show was being recorded in front of an audience later in the evening. I'm afraid I can't find anything on the intranet site about the programme so I don't know when it will be broadcast, but I'll let you know if I do manage to find anymore information."

The song they used was, of course, Lullaby..."

  • More on that Just Jack "Snowflakes/Lullaby" mix:
  • "JUST JACK - The next single will be in the shops Feb 17th: SNOWFLAKES- The CD also features: The Eddie Temple-Morris remix, a bootleg of The Cure's 'Lullaby, has created an incredible vibe and is currently enjoying rabid attention at Xfm, as well as a massive buzz starting in indie and student clubs The other 2 mixes, which appear both on the CD and the 12", have completely warped the original version. The Terminalhead mix is a breakbeat mash-up which uses only a fraction of Jacks vocal, and Grand Central artist Riton is turning heads with his broken beat re-rub."

    (Thanks Ange)

"I've been meaning to mail you for ages about the snowflakes/cure bootleg. at the club i go to they were giving away random promo cd's and i got a promo for the cure/snowflakes bootleg. it's a cd in a clear vinyl sleeve, and is called "Snowflakes/cure bootleg", apparently it's released on rg records and the telephone number of that company is +44(0)2074853737, and there's also an email info@rgrmusic.com."

    (Thanks Beck)

  • Cure Covers:
  • "A few days ago, while i was watching tv, i stumbled upon a programme, called "Salaprove" (Rehearsal room in italian) where the tv hosts some unknown italian bands for an hour or so of self-advertising and rehearsing. This time there was a band called Mary Go' Round (the name could be wrong) that was covering Just like heaven! It was a pretty rock tune, nicer than the Dinousaur Jr.'s cover, which I don't like. I watched it for a few minutes, but they didn't play anything else from the Cure apart from JLH."

    (Thanks Pietro)

  • Curespotting
  • "I read am article about the Danish-Crown Prince Frederik and his interest in music in this months issue of a Danish music mag called Gaffa. Frederik comments on him acting as a dj and his friends attitude towards that: "I really think The Cure is a fantastic band and it has always been a great pleasure to put on their albums because my brother and my friends always would respond with comments like 'who the hell is pulling the cats tale'."

    (Thanks Spies)

"The NME / 1 Feb 03 - Kelly Osbourne on the cover. A news section called "burn it" where bands talk about their personal compilations. This time The Faint are the guest. They've included Jumping Someone Else's Train, stating: "Possibly my favourite song ever. Rough recording. Cool, unpolished mood. A song about the masses of people who look for something different to grasp onto. Then it points out they've all found the smae thing."

    (Thanks Steven and Matt)

"I saw this the other day on Amazon. It just came out. The Dark Reign of Gothic Rock by Dave Thompson."
