"I was just watching "Much More Music" here in Canada, and one of their news ticker items claimed that Robert Smith had recently sent a personal letter to "Shakira", giving her advice on how to handle her new fame and stardom. "

For those who missed the story, you can read it here.

    (Thanks Brad)

"I was watching "I Love 1985" on BBC2 on Thrsday and they were talking about "gloomy, depressed goths" and they showed a cideo clip of "In Between Days" in a montage with other non-Cure clips. Also, a bit later, they were talking about how Robert Smith was a kind of "friendly introduction to goth" and showed a clip (with music) of the Love Cats. "

    (Thanks Sean C)

"I was watching "I love the 80's" in VH1 and in the episode of the year 88 they put the best bands in this year, and I was susprised when I saw "the cure", they played parts of some videos like "lovecats", why can't I be you" "boys don't cry" and "Lovesong" and some persons talked about the band, Depeche mode was in it too.

And after this the next episode 89, in the makeout songs of the year was "lovesong"...I was very happy to see them. VH1 will play the episodes again on January first. "

  • Curespotting:
  • "The other day i found in the kurt cobain journals. just published by VIKING in the UK this quote in page 44:"I mean, it seems like there are only two options for songwriters personalities either they're sad, tragic visionaries like Morrissey or Michael Stipe or Robert Smith or there's....." and he continues talking about other kind of singers...it seems that Kurt Cobain liked the Cure, or at least knew it well; this notes seem to be written in his diaries from 1988-89. It's worth reading the whole book as it is a design masterpiece."

  • Christmas with the Cure (well, not really):
  • "For Immediate Release

Workbook Studio will be presenting "Christmas with The Cure" on Saturday, December 28. Starting at 8:30 p.m. (Doors will open at 8pm) eleven different acts will perform two songs from the British pop/goth band The Cure and either a holiday favorite or an original song. A portion of the five dollar ($5) cover charge will go to WWCD’s (101.1 FM) Holiday Andyman-athon, "CD101 for the Kids".

In a career spanning more than twenty-five years, UK artists The Cure have sold over 28 million albums and influenced countless other artists. Founder Robert Smith is undoubtedly the heart and soul of The Cure. His eccentric behavior and downcast demeanor made him idolized by the black clad goth sect but undeniable is his long standing ability to create a catchy song. Originally formed in 1976, The Cure released the Albert Camus-inspired single "Killing An Arab" and continued to find appeal with their following singles, including; "Boys Don’t Cry", "A Forest" "Jumping Someone Else’s Train", "Lovecats" and "Close to Me". With their 1987 release "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" and 1989’s "Disintegration", The Cure found U.S. mainstream success, which continues to this day.

Workbook Studio is a full service recording studio located in Columbus, OH. Started in 1996 as a project studio for their band Pretty Mighty Mighty, Jon Chinn and Neal Schmitt soon started recording many of their friends bands. In 2002,Workbook opened their New York style loft location in Old Towne East with over 3,000 sq. ft of recording and performance space. Full length releases recently recorded at Workbook include titles by A Planet for Texas, The Pits, The New Bomb Turks and Miranda Sound.

Bands performing at the show include:

    Miranda Sound (Cols, OH)

Monster in your Closet (Cols, OH)

    Mothman (Portsmouth, OH)

    Poophouse Reilly (Cols, OH)

    Pretty Mighty Mighty (Cols, OH)

    The Privileges (Cols, OH)

    Season’s End (Cols, OH)

Skinny Tie Explosion (featuring members of The Randy’s, Orchestraville and Pretty Mighty Mighty)

    Stardrop (Cols, OH)

    The Stepford Five (Cols, OH)

The Red Wheelbarrow (Athens, OH formerly of Subatomic Particles and Planet 12)

  • The Cure place 4singles on Dutch radio chart:
  • "Dutch Radio station FM3 will broadcast the chart 715 (the best 715 singles ever made). We can find The Cure at NUMBER 26 !!!!!! with A forest, number 291 with Lullaby, number 312 with boys don't cry and number 400 with In between days.

You see, a very good result. The Cure's a forest is getting to be a classic one!!!! And The Cure is still very popular here. I hope to see them next year live in concert somewhere in Holland.

Oh yes, Metallica with One has made number 1. Guns 'n Roses with November Rain at 2 and Nirvana with Smells like teen spirit at 3."

    (Thanks Mark)

  • In the ongoing story of Shakira & The Cure, the latest chapter has now been written:
  • "found something interesting in the daily star newspaper (uk) on the showbiz page hot titled 'shak cured'

'shakira' is being given tips on the music business from 'the cure's robert smith'

the latin babe has made no secret of her love for the eighties goth heroes. she lists them as one of her two favourite bands along with 'led zepplin'. and now, in what has to be one of the weirdest relationships in music, she's been left thrilled after the cure's lead singer wrote a personal letter. the famously gloomy looking star discovered that shakira 25, was a fan and wrote to her giving her tips on music and fame. a friend of shakira's said: "she couldn't believe it when she got the letter from robert. "shakira is a huge fan of the cure so for him to write like that was absolutely thrilling.now she cant wait to meet him becouse he's one of her heroes." shakira performed her first uk concert at wembley arena this week on her tour of the mongoose jaunt."

  • Review of the Brazillian Picture Show dvd:
  • "The DVD for "Picture Show" has the look and feel of a bootleg (if you know what I mean), but it is hard to say if is or not from looking at it. The Cure are really the only ones that could say for sure or not. It is made by Golpaco International for DVD Total, and comes with very nice artwork on front and back of the case and a picture on the DVD itself. The DVD is quite good. It has a lot of bonus material that the VHS - of the same name - doesn't have. The videos included are "Why Can't I Be You," "Catch," "Hot, Hot, Hot!!!," "Just Like Heaven," "Lullaby," "Fascination Street," "Lovesong," Pictures of You," "Never Enough" and "Close to Me." One thing that needs to be said is that the picture quality is not what I would call DVD quality throughout. However, it is great to have these videos on DVD, and the extras are pretty nice. The extras include a slideshow of pictures from throughout the band's history, a moving album discography and singles discography, a moving (and blown-up text) for the magazine - I think which is called - DVD Total, three different language subtitles, dolby and surround sound selections and more. There is lots to read, although it's all in Portuguese. One thing that isn't great is that once you start reading an article you can't get back to the menu without fastforwarding through the rest of the text. It's a minor point, though, and it might work differently in other DVD players. Bootleg or not, I am impressed by this release. It's one of those DVD's that you can spend time exploring, finding something new each time. It's also a great stand-in until the Cure releases their back catalog of VHS releases on DVD. "

    (Thanks rust)

"I bought a CD of an Irish band called JJ72. There is a link to secret area of their website www.jj72.com. On this site an interview with the band members, from which I realize that these young men are seriously inspired by The Cure. Below are the relevant extracts.

"Every person has a view of what I To Sky is about. If you were a journalist writing about your album, how would you go about it?

Mark Greaney (mainman): The way that I'd pick it up would be... It's almost like a reinvention or a rejuvenation of the days of The Cure and bands like that, scary pop music. You know, pop music that's huge, it's big sound, and it shouldn't work because it's 'depressing' supposedly. But like Depeche Mode, that's why I always go on about these bands, Look at Depeche Mode, that film that was made of them when they were playing the Rosebowl, to how many, eighty thousand Californians and they're playing music which is gothy or that now wouldn't really be given a chance of being a stadium type of music. What I'd write, I don't know where this album fits in right now because we don't wear skinny ties and think we're Blondie but that I hope that it'll convert a lot of people. I hope there's going to be a lot of people who maybe weren't particularly interested in other bands or other music which will pick this up the way they picked up Nevermind or the way a lot of teenagers picked up Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and we end up playing a stadium one day.

What is it about I To Sky that you appreciate in it?

Fergal Matthews (drummer): What I love about the album is that there's such an openness, there's not a closed view of "this is what the song's about, you can hear it straight through the lyrics" It's open to any sort of interpretation that you want. Like so many tunes these days. It's that old Cure feel that Mark was saying about it, you can place anything in there, plus the way the songs are written. See the first album, they were kind of undigested songs, they went through the studio and came out recorded but this way we really became a band in the studio because we really played together and listened and acted on what we were doing.

Do you worry that not having commercial, radio friendly songs will limit the number of people you want to hear your music.

Mark Greaney: The risk you take you know. But you know, you've got to decide what radio stations play as opposed to them deciding. In other words, you've got to decide that you're going to write something that's so damn good that's so important and so necessary and so addictive that people have to play it on the radio. And that I believe is what they call infiltrating the mainstream and that is the aim. Again I'm harking back to the idea of The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen. Listen to some of those songs that were hit singles and you're going "Put that on the radio today and no one will play it, no one will touch it with a bargepoll. That doesn't make radio stations right today. I mean Miss Dynamite is great but Sinking is better. Just as a song on it's own, as far as I'm concerned. But you know, what would I know."

    (Thanks Georgy)

"In a french internet site called "Le Figaro Etudiant", for students, it is possible to buy tickets for concerts, expos, etc... And on the picture we can see an ad for The Cure Greatest Hits. http://www.figaroetudiant.com/"

"From Chile: I was zapping on my T.V. two days ago when a talkshow called "Con mucho cariño", ("With a lot of love"), caught my attention. They made a special program about the most important urban tribe in Santiago, our capital, like punks, gothics and hip-hops. In the studio were invited many people members of each group, who related the way of their life. In the part of gothic influence, they showed a short sequence of vampire images and the history from the gothic art in london. Then showed a part of "Friday I'm in love" of the "Show" video as explained the importance of the dark music in this movement. The funny note was put by the gothic guy, who related the moment when he was kissing his girlfriend and involuntarily bit her lips and drank of her blood. We have here in chile a lot of cure fans, many of us waiting so long for a cure concert. We hope someday Robert will make this dream come true. "

    (Thanks Paulo)

  • Quick update on the new album - recording is now scheduled for April, with a Sept. 2003 release date. Things have changed over the last few months, and could change again, but that's how it looks right now.

  • Robert's Christmas:
  • "This is from the latest issue of the swiss weekly TV journal "Tele" (No 51/02, 21.12 - 27.12). It's in an article called "24x Christmas". 24 stars said something about their way of celebrating christmas. Robert is number 6, I try to translate his answer: "I do cook for my extended family! But I never cope with it perfectly because I'm quite drunk. After every half hour at the hearth we have a wine- break at issue."

    (Thanks Greg)

  • More on the Just Jack Snowflakes track:
  • "additionally on that just jack - cure remix. found that the track 'snowflakes' can be heard at www.justjack.co.uk. (this is just snowflakes, no lullaby)."

    (Thanks Ed)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Next Saturday night the main film on Sky TV is Cats & Dogs. They are regularly running trailers for the film with the song 'lovecats' in the background."

    (Thanks Simon)

"I found a article about The Cure in Japanese Magazine, "Figaro Japon" this magazine is a female fashion Magazine, maybe there is a Cure fan in the editors room. We are preparing for a signature campaign for The Cure's live in Japan in 2003."

    (Thanks Sakurai)

"You ready for the weirdest Curespotting of all time? Last night somebody took me to see my very first drag queen show. One of the "performers" went by the name of Charlotte Sometimes! (which, if you think about it, makes sense in some sort of bizarre way)."

    (Thanks Zack)

  • Can anyone help Jewel out?
  • "happy holidays to cure fans far and wide! i have a small plea that i hope may be posted. in the ongoing drama of life i seem to have negligently lost contact with one of my very best cure friends, and am hoping someone may still be in touch with him.

  • More on that Snowflakes/Lullaby remix by Just Jack:
  • "I heard that Cure-sampled rap song on XFM (British Radio) tonight. Sorry I don't know the name of the artist or song, but it's the one that samples Lullaby. The DJ said that the song has finally been approved by Robert Smith for legal release (are we to assume his co-writers Gallup, Thompson, Williams, O'Donnell and allegedly Tolhurst have no say in this???) and that he reckons the song is going to be huge.

My own personal opinions on this? Well, I guess it depends on what you think of rap music. It starts off sounding like Tricky, especially the way the guy is rapping on it, and it's the sort of dark sound Tricky dabbles in (Tricky is worth a listen for those unfamiliar...) and I really quite enjoyed the first minute or so, but the chorus where some women start singing backing vocals just makes it sound like a Will Smith "rap" record or something. Musically, the sample is pretty much just the whole of Lullaby without Robert's vocal, although there is a very interesting sort of middle-8 which has a bit of a rising-chord crescendo thing going on. It's worth checking the song out for this bit, just as an idea of what Lullaby could have turned out to sound like if The Cure had recorded it on a different day, maybe ! (Don't spend any money on buying this though, for heavens sake !)

Erm, I don't suspect many Cure fans will buy this record, but it actually does sound like the sort of thing that could go Top 10, in Britain at least. Interesting for a few minutes at least, but essentially bollocks !! Still, it's a few extra quid in the old bank account eh ?"

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

  • Cure cover:
  • "Last tuesady on Dec 9th I went to Malmoe, Sweden to see J Masics (ex Dinosaur Jr.) play at a place called 'KB'. In the middle of the set Masics played their cover of Just Like Heaven. There wasn't any band other than Jay playing the guitar but it was a great quirky cover of JLH - just like the recorded cover!"

    (Thanks Björn)

  • Is there a Cure calender for 2003?
  • "I was wondering whether anyone knew where I could purchase a Cure 2003 calender on the internet. I have had no luck finding one in the shops in London, so if anyone knows where I can order one could you please let me know. Omega36335@aol.com."

And please let me know as well, so I can get it posted for everyone. Thanks.

  • "Here is a screenshot from the french movie called Sexy Boy where we can see a kiss me LP on the wall…."

    (Thanks Nicolas)

"Yesterday (Dec. 11) on MuchMusic here in Canada, I saw a tv ad for "Big Shiny 90's," a 2-cd set of hits from the 90's. I am assuming that "Friday I'm in Love" is on it, as they aired a short clip from the video during the commercial."

    (Thanks Christian)

"Just thought I'd share this National Enquirer curespotting with you... In the December 17, 2002 issue of the National Enquirer there is a short caption about Brandon Boyd of Incubus' first kiss. The caption reads: HOW SWEET! "My first kiss was memorable. I was around 12 year old and she was much, much older--like 16. We kissed while The Cure album 'Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me' played."

  • DVD Brazil sends us some info on the Picture Show dvd:
  • "We are sending this email just to let you know the truth about PICTURE SHOW DVD and our site.

We are an registered & legally company in Brazil, which deal only directly from DVD distribuitors in our country.

All of our products listed on website are bought legally. In Brazil, to proof the source of a product for legal purposes (like copyright, origin of product, etc), we have in our country a document called "NOTA FISCAL" (Tax Receipt, a kind of commercial invoice used nationwide).

We did not deal with bootlegs, VCDs or DVD-Rs. However, we are unable to verify the international copyright documentations everytime when a title is released. We are just an online store, not a distributor or manufacturer.

Our company is very concerned about the copyrights, since we are selling products bought legally and we presumed they are official releases (like we described in our item descriptions the note called ABOUT THE LEGALLY OF OUR PRODUCTS).

About our prices, we sell the items legally, so we have local taxes, export duties, courier expenses, package & handling, and many others monthly expenses running the website, credit card charges, banking charges, secure site certified charges, etc. The $18.95 price is the same (or less than) a regular title released in any country.

If someone in Brazil (or in other country) would like to sell this DVD wordwide for the same price on the "brazilian streets", please feel free to do it.

We just like to say: DVDBrazil is a company, not an individual.

    Best regards,

  • Cure cover (I think I've mentioned this before, but it won't hurt to run it again):
  • "The cover by Ivy mentioned on your site is on the album "Guestroom". It is a covers album they released earlier this year. I read that they decided to cover "Let's Go To Bed" because their bass player would always sound check with that bass line when they were on tour."

    (Thanks John)

  • Curespotting:

"I was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico the first week of December. While walking on their main street past restaurants and bars (hearing nothing but disco, heavy metal and mexican music) I heard "Just Like Heaven" playing inside a bar named "The Zoo". Thinking they were only playing hit songs, I was surprised and pleased to next hear the extended version of "Pictures of You". They played several more Cure songs in a row, but I never found out why...except maybe that they have very good taste in music! "

  • Here's some more info about the Brazilian Picture Show dvd release:
  • "About the brazilian Picture Show DVD: From what I know, these DVDs aren't exactly "bootlegs" in the sense of being made in a dark room late at night, but definitely they aren't authorized by the bands involved, probably just a few are authorized releases.

I just got mine last friday, they are sold here with a magazine (named "DVD Total"). All these editions are copies of the laserdiscs. The audio quality is OK, but the video quality isn't the best possible in a DVD (there is too much compression at some points, if you zoom in you can notice that). The quality is far superior from the In Orange asian VCD sold some time ago, but it's still not the best.

They have a small print on the cover saying something like "authorized by ..." with a name of a publishing company that, at least in the case of Cure releases in Brazil, isn't who publishes their works here, if they have a separate company for doing this in Brazil. I know some bands that have sort of a "sub-label" here, I saw it many times in the brazilian releases of a very known 70's british band, who had its material released by EMI worldwide but here it appeared as an "Itaipu Editora" release. But this "Itaipu Editora" was nothing but one of the EMI representants in Brazil at the time.

Since it was released here with a magazine and it's easily available, I can't tell about dvdbrazil.com services. But their prices... it's extremely expensive, since the magazine can be bought by US$ 5 on the streets."

    (Thanks BACO)

"The Cure Picture Show dvd is being sold in newstands in Brazil as a GIFT from magazine "DVD Total" that includes some photos and the band history. It costs only R$19.90 (about US$5.50)... Brazilians can also buy it through internet at http://www.revistadvdtotal.com.br/thecure.asp I don't know about the rest of the world, but everybody could try to buy send in an e-mail to the magazine at dvdtotal@terra.com.br ... It seems that DVD Brazil wants to earn money easily, once they say "List Price: US$ 29.95 Our price: US$ 18.95 You save: US$ 11.00 (37% OFF)" and the "List Price" of the magazine is about US$5.50 (so, paying US$18.95 you would pay 245% MORE than you should!).

    (Thanks The 13th)

  • And more info on the Rock Masters dvd:
  • "Image Entertainment's site, http://www.image-entertainment.com, now has February 2003 releases on their site and includes the Cure Rock Masters DVD. the site is framed, or else i'd give you a direct link.

it says the total time is 57 minutes (which differs from the 42 minutes posted earlier). you can pre-order starting January 7.

Also, you might want to pass this on to your curious readers that enjoy typography: the font used on the Brazilian Picture Show DVD is called Mest, by Errol Richardson. it can be downloaded (for Mac and PC) at the excellent site Surfstation (www.surfstation.lu). click on Typeset (on the left under table of contents), then use the dropdown menu to find Mest."

    (Thanks Jason)

  • Cure cover:
  • "I was checking out the latest Listening Party CDs on RealNetworks RealOne service, and came across an intersting find: a cover of "Let's Go to Bed" by the band Ivy. Here's a link that may or may not work, depending on if this is free or requires their subscription service:

  • Here's a review of that Cure "special" on Canal Jimmy:
  • "The Cure Special on canal Jimmy... had nothing of special! In fact, it was made up by several bits of interviews with the band crew (guitar tecnicians, etc...) and a brief story (which omitted the japanese whispers era, kiss me, wish and wild mood swings...) told by a man sitting on the ground in a garage, reading from an iBook on his legs!!! they showed the videos for Close to me, Lullaby, and Wrong number, and it ended with the performance of Pornography (the middle part was cut for time reasons) from the Rome show of this year, that was also where the interviews were set. I repeat the date and hour of the next time it will be shown (that's for italian fans, though i don't know whether canal jimmy is international): (format: month/day: hh.mm) - 12/6: 00.20 - 12/7: 11.45 - 12/8: 5.40 - 12/14: 1.55 - 12/29: 5.10."

  • Curespotting:
  • "On MuchMusic Argentina (channel #132 of DirecTV) there is a program called World Cup, where music bands compete by getting votes by the phone from the audience. This week is an 80's bands competition. The Cure made it to the semifinals where it was beaten by Queen. On the other semifinal, The Police beat Depeche Mode. Final game Queen vs. The Police. And 3rd place match is Depeche Mode vs. The Cure. Hot Hot Hot and Boys Don't Cry videos were on air today."

  • Here's an interview Bill Welychka did with Porl Thompson during the 100% Sky exhibit:
  • When you describe your technique and talk about your style in painting, you don't paint objects, you paint moments?

    (nods) Yeah.

    Could you explain that?

Well, being in the moment, in painting, having that connection as yourself, connecting with yourself and the just painting the physical thing. You're not saying "Oh, there's box, and I'm going to paint that," You're just saying, "this space is right to paint." You paint and then you look back and see what's happening.

And you find it best to paint in the morning when you've just gotten up?

Really early in the morning, or really late, yeah. like, five in the morning, or eleven at night and onwards. In the daytime I don't ever do any of that.

Because the reason being you're too conscious?

Yeah, and also the energy's different at that time of day, you know, first thing in the morning, it's really vibrant, I mean where I live, I live right by the sea and you get all that coming in... So I pick up on that and work from it.

Why the effort to paint with an unconscious attitude because I think what you've said is that you paint your dreams, and you're not in control of your dreams, I mean, at least I'm not, so is that an extension of that free-flow?

It's the idea of trying to stay with what you wake up, and not draw it or paint it but paint in that mode, so that whatever is coming through, hopefully you're translating it, however it's translating, and hopefully people who know that state will recognize it, you know? (Bill nods)

Is it odd to talk about art?

Hmm, yeah. Really odd. Because obviously you get all the... intellectualizing (they both laugh) and to be honest it just feels like a very natural thing to do, so, there's no real great mystique within it other than the fact that you just train yourself to channel.

How many interviews have you done for this exhibit? Depending on who you're talking to, you're probably, getting a lot of bizarre questions, or questions that you just find difficult to answer pertaining to art.

Well, actually I haven't really done very many interviews because since I've been here we've been non-stop trying to put the show together. Cos I had to disassemble a lot of it from England and it's been rebuilt and we've been put in bits in the studio and changed a lot of the stuff for the windows. It's been pretty intense, you know. There was one interview yesterday, so that's it. (Laughs)

Well, I've been thinking of the showing which wasn't this particular exhibit, but you had another art exhibit in England in '99 and I'm sure you did press for that. I mean, it reminds me of the quote talking about music is like dancing about architechture and I think you can also apply that to art.

    Oh yeah, totally. ...

There it is, it doesn't need an explanation

That's right, I mean, it's the same with music. You hear music and you kind of think, well, you like it or you don't like it and I feel the same really. And the rythm of the painting should express itself in the same way, and it's funny cos everyone wants you to have this sort of deep... (Bill nods) Well, I guess I do, but I'm not very good at expressing it, up there. (Gestures towards the camera.)

It's almost an extension of the belief that sometimes that taking a picture steals a little bit of that person's soul, and I'm thinking it's almost like that with art.

Most definitely. I mean, you're naked there, I mean that's it, you know. People can see all the things you probably don't even realize you're painting, in that mode, you don't realize it's that extreme. It's like music when you're playing, and you get to that point where the band locks and they're really on it, it's the same thing you're just, totally exposed to everybody. And I just like to get to that area, to be.

Well, for years you were a side man, you were a contributor to other people's projects. Does it ever get weird when you see some kind of advertisement for something, and it's your name front and centre this time?

Oh yeah, well, for a while I would just cut out the Thompson and just had Porl.

    That's all you need.

Well, a lot of people didn't like it, I suppose it is a bit weird, yeah.

    Are you comfortable with that?

In as much as I am comfortable with any of that side of it. I'm still allowing it, so I am I guess.

Well, for instance with the Cure, I know that, indirectly, people loved you because you were a part of that project, same with Page and Plant. I'm sure in affiliation with those guys, there's an automatic level of respect, but out of those people who come to your shows, are there many Cure fans who come your exhibit? Or is just people who are fans of art in general.

Yeah, I think it was about 50/50. A lot of people travelled from all over.

Is that encouraging, I mean, do you think fans of the musical side of things will be turned on to art as a result of coming to see the exhibit?

Well, I'm not trying to give anybody lessons in anything particularly. I'm just doing it so it's there so you go in and you just see the thing working for itself. I couldn't pretend to teach anybody anything really. (laughs)

And it is nothing new, I mean the music and the art have always been there for you, and I think your art was even before music.

Oh yeah, and also art got me back into music. I was doing the (album) covers before I rejoined the band. But I don't see it as any different, I mean when we were in the studio listening, I would just see the images coming all the time, so hence covers. I still do that, I almost always paint to music. It just comes like that, a lot of design comes that way as well.

And what about a Porl Thompson solo record? Is that possible?

Not the sort of record where I'm going out and doing a solo thing, but I am writing some music for a cd-rom to go along with the paintings and sort of making a film about the studio environment. (laughs) And I'll probably eventually finish that in time....

Just one last question, about Plant actually. He had recently come out and said that he didn't want to be a Vaudeville act or just dragging out the old hits, and this album was a long time between solo projects. Was there a sense of that with him in the studio? That renewed energy and desire to contribute after all these years?

Without a doubt. I wouldn't even considered doing otherwise. I mean, just what he said to me over the phone was exciting about going in the studio and getting the guys from Portishead and revisiting areas of his life that had inspired him. I just found that an exciting idea, so I jumped in the car, went down to the rehearsal space to see if we gelled and it was really good. I really admire him for that, it was quite a great thing really.

How much did you have to do with the sound and feel of that record?

    Well a lot, yeah.

I'm thinking you did because when I first heard it, I thought, there's a lot of Porl in there.

Yeah, I wrote quite a lot of music for the songs that the horn covers, and, well (laughs) every now and then my guitar takes over.... And then the band just really gelled and everybody found a good place to sit. The two guitarists, we managed to find an area where we worked together, cos we come from quite different backgrounds. But yeah, that was a nice challenge! "

    (Thanks Martijn)

  • New Cure remix:

  • "I was listening to Radio 5 today when Bob Geldoff and Dom Joly were both on the show. Just before they left Dom Joly gave a plug for his new series to be on BBC3 when it starts and he said that the Cure would be on it. Bob Geldoff replied "now they are good" and Dom Joly responded with "Yea Robert Smith is God"."

"Listening to an interview with Dom Joly on Radio 5 today. He was talking about his new series on BBC3 called 'This Is Dom Joly' and he said that The Cure and Robert Smith were going to be in it. He also said they were fantastic. Sorry, but I didn't catch when the programmes were going to be shown. Can someone find out and let us know perhaps?"

    (Thanks Ali and Emma)

"Just a small one really and kinda odd. Kelley Osborne, Ozzy's Daughter had a write up in the USA today (in last weekends edition.) that she did not really listen to Heavy Metal but listened to other bands such as the The Cure and David Bowie. I wonder if this had an influence on her album. "

    (Thanks Alan)
