This is a compilation of places I know about, in and around Orange
County. I'm a pistol shooter, so the list slants in that direction.
OPEN-RANGE SHOOTING
There are no county-designated recreational shooting areas in
Orange County, but San Bernardino and San Diego counties have areas
for open-range shooting. Some are restricted to daytime use, others
are day and night zones.
PLEASE NOTE: Lyttle Creek is now
closed to shooting, even though the 1996 San Bernardino
shooting map shows it open. The county got tired of cleaning it up,
and shut it down. PLEASE be sure to remove all your rubbish
after shooting, wherever you shoot.
Shooting designations are a function of the Bureau of Land Management
or the National Park Service. The county sheriff's office usually
knows the areas, since they are the principal enforcement.
- San Bernardino BLM: (909) 383-5654.
- California Desert information center: (619) 255-8760
They have an (outdated) shooting map of San Bernardino County, and if
you show up in person (in Barstow), they can direct you to designated
areas.
- Cleveland National Forest, Palomar Ranger District: (619)788-0250
Photocopied shooting maps available showing areas inland from Escondido
If you know of other places known to be legal for shooting,
drop me a line
with the info.
