This is a compilation of places I know about, in and around Orange County. I'm a pistol shooter, so the list slants in that direction.

If you know of other places known to be legal for shooting, drop me a line with the info.

• The local chapters of the NRA often offer Basic Handgun, Basic Rifle, Basic Shotgun and Personal Protection classes, taught by certified instructors. Courses are 8-10 hours of hands-on instruction, and reasonably comprehensive.
• Both The Firing Line and On Target offer BFSC handgun courses and basic training. Due to time constraints they can only cover very basic safety.
• Greg Block is a police instructor who teaches a one-day introductory class, highly recommended. He also offers rifle, shotgun, and more advanced pistol courses, including a course in tactics. Web page, or (714) 893-8676.
• Paxton Quigley instructs at Orange County ranges. Her seminars are specifically for women, and cover many aspects of personal safety, including the use of firearms. She is a well-known instructor and highly recommended. Click on her web page or call (310) 281-1762.
• Max Joseph is a military combat instructor with a curriculum similar to Front Sight's. Based out of Huntington Beach. (714) 846-8065
• Oceanside Pistol Academy is a short drive down the coast, and hosts periodic tactical classes, as well as scenario-based instruction and competition every other Thursday evening. Call (619) 721-4388 for information.
• The Centurion Group offers tactical pistol, carbine, and shotgun courses at the Burro Canyon Shooting Park. Call 1-800-677-4407 for more information.
• The Defensive Combat Academy (Los Angeles) offers a broad spectrum of training at an excellent rate.
• Awesome Arms (Ventura) offers an intensive defensive curriculum, including simunitions for force-on-force training. (805) 521-1808

• Straight Shooter (now Evan's Gun World) used to hold biweekly bowling pin matches. If anyone can tell me about other matches in Orange or LA Counties, I'd be much obliged. I miss shooting pins.
