His words like brimstone and blazing torches Elijah Poster
With fiery, fiery horses

Elijah includes some of the most beautiful arias and choruses found in Western music.

Cabrillo Chorus performed this wonderful work the summer of 2000 at home in Santa Cruz and at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.

There came a fiery chariot

Art Schuller performed the part of Elijah brilliantly. He has appeared in a variety of solo and ensemble roles over the past 30 years. He began his musical career with a professional choir at the Church of the Ascension and the University of Chicago Collegium Musicum, making recordings of selections from the Historical Anthology of Music, the sourcebook for early music, while in medical school. In 1974, he joined the faculty of the University of California, Davis, where he sang with the University Early Music Ensemble, performing as Nebuchadnezzar in the Play of Daniel, a medieval liturgical drama, as Jesus in Bach’s St. John Passion, and as Elijah in Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

In 1999, he and his wife Jane retired to the Monterey Peninsula, where he sings with Cantiamo! Cabrillo and at the Church of the Wayfarer in Carmel. In spring 2000, he sang the part of Jesus in Cantiamo’s production of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. He is a physician who specializes in pain management and studies voice with Dr. Harvey Marshall.
