Happy Halloween!

  • More info on the AOL interview and the FIIL(acoustic) download:
  • Direct link to the Real Audio interview:

    http://demand1.stream.aol.com/ramgen/aol/us/aolmusic/artists/wmg/cure/robertsmith_intv.rm

Direct link to the acoustic download in Windows Media format:

    http://download.nullsoft.com/pub/music/Cure-Friday_Im_In_Love.wma

And some info for Mac users:

"re: the AOL link for the FIIL download

just a note for the Mac users (like me at work), when you click the download link it will save a file to the desktop called clickThruRedirect.adp. you can rename the file to whatever you want, but just make sure you rename it with the .wma extension.

or you can click and hold on the link, then "download link to disk" and then save the file that way (again it must have the .wma extension).

the same goes for the Real Audio file. it must be renamed with the .rm extension."

  • Robert will be on Studio Brussels next week:
  • "This morning I heard on the Belgian radiostation Studio Brussel that every day of next week at 10.30 Robert's going to pick one of his favorite songs in the program 'His Master's Voice'. The guy on the radio also said it probably was going to be a rather dark choice... After that, they played Cut Here and after that the Massive Attack song with the 10.15 sample."

    (Thanks Jeroen)

  • Another update for all of the nervous and anxious Australian fans. Straight from Warner Vision Australia - the album will definitely be out on Nov. 19th and there WILL be a Region 4 dvd release, but not until Jan. 2002.
  • (Thanks Fuji)

  • Some details on the 'Cut Here' single (which is out now, so buy a bunch of copies and get it up the charts!):
  • "Just picked up the import for the new single, and in case you didn't know, there's some neat stuff on it.

When you load up the disk in a computer, it brings you to a screen with an image of the cover, and a menu to the right. From that menu you can choose to view the video in one of two sizes. The smaller size allows you to stop, rewind, pause, and change the volume on screen.

Below the videos is a button to view the album. This brings you to a large image of the album cover, with the contents of each disk (UK version, of course) listed on either side of the screen. There are selectable sound bites for Lovecats and Pictures of You off the proper album, and Why Can't I Be You and Friday I'm In Love from the acoustic disc.

Below the album button on the main menu is a button for lyrics. This is pretty neat. It brings up the lyrics, and while playing the song, it lights up the respective lines as they are sung, karaoke-style. Even better, you can click on any line in the song, and have it play immediately from that point forward.

While there isn't a whole lot on the disc, the presentation is fantastic, and it actually has some useful stuff on it outside the video. Hopefully the album (or at least the DVD) will have something similar, in lieu of a decent inlay.

As for the other two songs, well, they're great. Signal To Noise is straight-forward rock with a fair amount of feedback and a melody somewhat remeniscent of really old REM. The remix of Cut Here is much more sparse and melancholy, with more of a dance rhythm.

BTW, what little I managed to hear of the acoustic songs, they were much, much better than the MTV unplugged sessions. They really sound like they're enjoying themselves."

    (Thanks James)

  • There will be a Cure special on Danish tv:
  • "The Danish TV station TV2 ZULU, http://zulu.dk/ has informed me, that there there will be a programme about The Cure Monday, November 12 at 22.30 (european time) in the programme "RAKETFART". Later on it will be possible to see the programme on the TV2 ZULU website.

I know about the programme because the TV station contacted me. They had found me because of my Cure dedicated website ONE HUNDRED YEARS. They wanted a Cure fan in the studio and they asked me to be in the programme untill they found out that I am almost the same age as Robert! Well, I did find it quite funny that they didn´t want to use me because of my age, because a lot of us who has followed The Cure for years and still is around DO get older ...just like The Cure :-) "

    (Thanks Tina)

  • That JAM! Music article is still going around the world. Now Plasticos y Decibelios has their spin on it.
  • (Thanks Alex)

  • Want a Cure dance party in Washington, D.C.? :
  • "I had a crazy idea. I was at the Depeche Mode Dance party at The Metro Cafe on 10/27/01. I met Dennis, he manages the web page: http://metrocafe.net

Metro Cafe 1522 14th St, NW Washington, DC 202-588-9118

I told him that it would be really kewl to have an all nite Cure Dance Party. He sounded interested and wanted to know if I knew anyone who is interested in Spinning the Cure music all nite.

I think if enough people go to his webpage and e-mail him, we can make this happen.

    (Thanks Carolyn)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Cut Here is now beeing played on austrian alternative radio station fm4: on 30th they played it in the evening and afterwards a jingle with Robert on the Phone saying "Hi, this is Robert from the cure, you´re listening to radio fm4 (he said "vier" in german and not four, nice). And this morning (31th), I heard it again. The DJ told us, that "the gothic boys who don´t cry" are fed up with major labels and that they will create a new band page - a "new age hippie comune" - where the fans can get the new stuff for free.

Also on www.msn.at they have "Sound of Halloween - Music & Videos to scare you" with the video of Lovesong (!!!) amongst "Wish" from NIN or "Thriller" from Jackson as Top Five of Shocking Sounds. Strange."

    (Thanks Bianca)

"I don't know if this has been mentioned on here before, but for whatever reason, i was watching Blast From The Past on TNN because it featured Christopher Walken and there is a scene in this strange bar with this cult of hippies worshipping Walken and his family, who they believe are some sort of gods and in the midst of all the shrines to them, there is Robert Smith's face torn out of a poster from the Wild Mood Swings / Galore era. I thought it was a really peculiar thing to notice, and thought I'd mention it."

    (Thanks Avasha)

  • A late, but still very sincere Happy Birthday and Best Wishes to Daryl Bamonte who celebrated on Saturday.

  • A bit more on the AOL Robert interview and a FIILacoustic download they're offering :
  • "Not sure if this may help...but it worked for some of my friends....

    http://aolsvc.aol.com/music/alternative/alternative.adp

not sure if they would have to download the AOL media player for that type of file though...?....but its worth a shot...for such a FANTASTIC interview...best ive heard in the past couple of wks that hes been doin...!"

    (Thanks B and Chris)

"Don't know if 100 people have told you already, but if you go the robert smith interview on AOL there is a free download of the acoustic version of Friday I'm in Love. It's quite good. Very much like the original. Robert's vocals are front in center and he sounds like he's really having fun.

the download apparently expires after 30 days. it's in WMA format, not mp3."

    (Thanks Charlie)

  • I'm still trying to get the KDGE interview to transcribe. Jessie said she would try to copy it on Sunday, but I haven't heard anything else. The Edge 102 in Toronta transcript has fallen through and we won't be getting it. If anyone has a copy of the other radio interviews that we don't have transcripts for, please let me know.

  • From Play It Louder:
  • The Cure: For your ills...

    Not that you deserve them...

The Cure, who we love dearly and shall never forget because they wrote a song called 'Apart' which makes us cry, release a brand new single today. It's true, and you better be happy.

Famed for splitting up all the time almost as much as they are for their frontman's inability to apply make-up properly, The Cure release 'Cut Here' today (Mon. October 29th) on two CDs and something else. And unsurprisingly, it's ace. In a 'Friday I'm In Love' does the Stone Roses kind of way. So go and buy it. Then sit back, jiggle your head about, and wait for the Greatest Hits LP, which comes out on November 12th. Along with 'Cut Here', it features another new song, 'Just Say Yes', a duet with - gah - Saffron of Republica and red hair fame. So that should be scary, at least. Due to the increasingly annoying import worries of record company people, the British and Japanese version of the LP will differ from the US release, but to placate fans the band have done the decent thing and included a bonus acoustic disc with the package, featuring newly recorded and live versions of all 18 tracks on the record. Hell yeah. Finally, a DVD is being prepared, which should excite the more technologically advanced amongst you. It sure does us anyway. On Monday I wished that it was Tuesday so... Ah, that's Billy Bragg. Never mind. TALK! (http://boards.playlouder.com/talk/news/)

    (Thanks Robert)

  • That JAM! Music article really gets around:
  • "While reading the news section of my ISP www.terra.com.br, there was this:

"The Cure swaps recording companies' schemes for the Internet"... and it's more or less like that (free translation): "The Cure will go away on vacations out of the big recording companies schemes and will release its new works on the Internet only, in the official site. Robert Smith told the canadian website Jam Music that he's tired to ask the companies's managers what he can or can't do. "I'm over 40 years old and I think that the Internet represents the perfect opportunity for the band to make things without having to ask anyone else" he said. The musician said that the reason is not finances. "We just want to change a bit, even if it lasts for a year only". A new compilation of The Cure's greatest hits will come to the international market in november 12th, while Smith works in a solo album for the next year."

    (Thanks BACO)

And NME has a story about it as well.

    (Thanks David)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I picked up the latest Kirsty MacColl album, "Tropical Brainstorm", made shortly before her untimely death. It's all Cuban music, and contains a video that consists of footage shot during a trip she took to Cuba. In the footage is a shot of a tall Cuban fellow wearing a Robert Smith t-shirt and a big goofy grin.

Maybe the embargo is working, in a strange way. :P "

    (Thanks James)

  • A very Happy Birthday and Best Wishes to Roger O'Donnell. Cheers!

  • A bit more about the Paris tv taping:
  • "Well, one thing is sure : I managed t get Robert's setlist at the end of the gig, and all these songs WERE in the set except the two last ones. I had been told by the person who let me in, that it would not be a concert but a short TV taping. So, I don't know what to tell you. The gig was about one-hour long. And they did an interview for Arte just after the show. And they were only electric. Sorry I forgot to mention that. And I could hear the soundchecks, and even in the soundchecks, everything was electric. Honestly, I would have loved to see them playing accoustic songs. The great thing was Simon helping people. When we were waiting outside before entering the place, I could see a window on the first floor, it was half open, and I saw that people were watching for us. I said a friend of mine "hey look, the band's watching us". I was joking. But I was told that the band saw more people than expected and Simon asked if it was possible to have everybody (maybe 20 extra people) enter. Again, I was told that. You may have another report confirming this.

Something I forgot to mention : at the end of the show, Robert said "Thank you very much, see you..." 1) next week? 2) next year? Personnaly I heard next week, and other people could hear next year. I don't know. Now I hope they will broadcast the complete show. I wish they played Cut here, however..."

    (Thanks Bruno)

  • For those who missed it in previous updates, ARTE will broadcast the Paris taping on Nov. 27th.

  • Robert was 91X on sunday:
  • "I just wanted to write in a and let you know that Robert was interviewed on 91X in San Diego during "Resurrection Sunday". I didn't get to catch the whole interview, but here are a few excerpts that I did manage to catch:

    - Robert mentioned a possible 4 CD Box Set "Anthology" in the future that would encompass the entire "Greatest Hits" of The Cure.

    - Robert was asked what the "one" definitive Cure song was to him, and he stated that there were far to many just to choose one, but recently it was when he recorded and listened to "Out of This World" that gave him the inspiration and desire to go on with The Cure and make music. Robert said that if he had to pick 2 songs that defined the 2 styles of music that The Cure made they would be "Disintigeration" (the dark gloomy side), and "Just Like Heaven" (the great pop song side).

    - The DJ asked Robert about the various line up changes in the group over the years, and Robert commented that that he was completely happy with the current line up and that they had now been together for about 7 years.

    - At the end of the interview Robert was asked about his statement that the last tour was their "last", and he laughed and said that he was going to stop saying anything about the "end" of The Cure or the "Last" time they would do anything. He jokingly said the he was going to start to reefer to The Cure in parts (this being part one), and that the second part would happen sometime in 2025. Robert again mentioned that the tour for Bloodflowers was his favorite, and at the end of the tour he thought to himself that he enjoyed it too much for it to be the last time they toured.

Unfortunatly I only caught about the last 10 minutes of the interview, so I am not sure what else was said during the beginning. The interview must have been pre-recorded because between the different parts of the interview they would stop to play a Cure song. After the end of the interview the DJ mentioned the upcomming "Greatest Hits" and played "Cut Here" and "Lets go to Bed" back to back."

    (Thanks Matthew)

  • Robert also did an interview for AOL:
  • "There's a very long (25 minutes!) and candid interview with Robert available at AOL's music station. I'm not sure how to get there (or even if you can get there at all) if you're not an aol user. AOL users should hit Keyword: Music, then choose Rock: Alternative from the "Choose music styles" menu. There you'll find a picture of Robert and a blurb about the interview under the heading "Cure Thyself."

Robert talks (and talks and talks!) about his issues with the timing of the new album; mentions 5 new songs which point to a new all-original cure album; addresses why making music with the band will be more fun without a major-label contract; and apparently for the first time publicly announces having recorded (along with the band) something for an upcoming British comedy show. "We've actually recorded something for a comedy show without telling anyone, even the record companies cuz that's where the leaks always come from. It's actually going to be out in the UK very shortly..." "Cut Here" plays in its entirety when the interview is over.

I thought this was a kickass interview. Robert sounds clear, direct, revealing, and sincere; it's more than just a rehash of the stuff we already know. He alludes to "the fans" several times in ways that I found very touching. I've had AOL for about 7 years and have never checked the music station before; I was just bored this morning and thought I'd see if they have any good radio. Guess I picked the right day! "

Does anyone know a way to get this without joing the ultra-evil conglomerate AOL? If not, I guess we'll have to use one of those "2000 hours free" discs that seem to pop up everywhere. : )

    (Thanks angel)

  • More Robert interviews coming soon:
  • "The website of the German Alternative magazine 'intro' has done an interview with Robert a few days ago. This interview was filmed and will be online in the next days. On the same site, you can listen to the acoustic hits on the 9th and 10th of November! So watch out for this site: www.intro.de"

    (Thanks Lars)

"I wrote an e-mail last night when i found out robert was going to be on a local radio station but i got the facts wrong, and i am sorry for that. the commercial saids robert is going to be on wedesday night at 9pm, on 103.3 the edge in buffalo, ny."

    (Thanks ~mags~)

  • The JAM! Music article made it to Israel:
  • "The following was published in the largest Israeli daily paper "Yedioth Aharonot", in the entertainment section today, Oct 28 (I am giving a rough translation from hebrew).

This article is attributed to "Yedioth Acharono" news service, so it is probably copied from other sources and might appear in European papers as well. The article comes with a photo of the band (all five looking and smiling at a camera above them), this looks like a relatively old photo.

The title is "The record companies don't care"-The Cure.

Title: The Cure will distribute music only on the internet

Subtitle: After having enough with the indifference of the record companies.

Group leader: "I am sick of consulting with six people every time I want to do something"

The British rock group "The Cure" will not renew their contract with their record company. Instead, they intend to distribute their music using the internet. "I am sick of consulting with six people every time I want to do something" explains Robert Smith, the group leader. "The internet seems as a great opportunity to try new things, without needing permissions from anyone".

Smith added that in the group's official website (www.thecurecom) new music will be distributed at a small scale for the duration of one year, "For those who are especially interested". According to Smith, the fiscal situation of the band allows it to distribute its music for free.

Smith has much criticism towards the big record companies. "Our latest Album, Bloodflowers, did not get the promotion it deserved. Last year we performed in front of half a million spectators, but the record companies did not care. All they cared was that we had made money for them"

The fans should not be worried. According to Smith, the band intends to go on tour this summer in festivals and small music halls. In addition, a collection of singles is about to be released."

    (Thanks Uri)

  • Cut Here video update:
  • "I think German music channel Viva 2 plays "Cut Here" on heavy rotation, I just caught it two times within three hours this morning."

    (Thanks Martin)

"German musik-tv VIVA ZWEI is playing the Cut Here Video now. I watched it on their Clipshow called ZWEI, that means only Clips an no moderation."

    (Thanks Thomas)

  • An update on the KENZ "World Seris":
  • "As was mentioned a few days ago, The Cure were up against the winner of U2 and Oingo Boingo on the "World Series Play-offs" Close to 2200 people called in/e-mailed, or faxed a vote, and the Cure lost by 49 points against U2!! We were so close!! "

    (Thanks Treeweel)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Sunday october 28 I was watching MTV here in Belgium around twenty passed five when on "so 90's" they had a 20 second interview clip with Robert Smith before passing the "Pictures of You" video.

    (Thanks David)

"Today (28th October) there was a Cure Special on Voxx radio, Portugal. I haven't heard the entire show, the part i've listened to, had only tracks taken from galore and cut here, so not sure if the start of the programm had something more."

    (Thanks Paulo)

"Channel 4 in Israel (cables) promote their movies for this winter with Lullaby as the background music. Too bad their selection of movies is not as good as their musical selection."

    (Thanks Uri)

"I was in San Francisco to see the band Travis thursday night. Well, you know how between bands they play filler music? Well, usually I don't know any of the songs that are played, but before Travis came on they played The Cure's version of "Purple Haze"!! I was really exicted since we were just blocks away from the Virgin Megastore where I had waited hours to meet them during their Bloodflowers promo tour!"

    (Thanks TiB1015)

  • Another report from the Paris taping:
  • Well, I got the opportunity to reach the private TV show rehearsal tonight in Paris. And guess what, after 14 years of cure fanatism, I finally got to talk to Robert himself. How amazing, the play was only singles, including the just say yes duet with Saffron, but a few fans stayed in the street in front of the "Reservoir" (near la Bastille) and wait until the band get out. And we got the chance to see Simon, Jason, Perry and Roger getting out first, taking time to sign some stuff for fans, and discuss a bit, before entering a big van and leaving the place.

Few minutes later, it was the turn of Robert, and he really took time to have some discussion with fans, and I personaly asked him about the way he intends to set their website release thing for the upcoming album/or titles. He seemed to be very enthusiastic about this question, and promised we will have great surprises with a new site completely redone and ready to distribute music... He was just worrying about the internet download time required when you got slow internet connection, and seemed to be really concerned with digital phones internet connection ?! Well this part was not very clear to me, since I'm not the best in english, and the other people were making some noise trying to get things signed by Robert... Nevertheless I just suggest he could call me if he will need some technical support for their upcoming website !

Very unbelievable night, hard to believe for the moment, still trying to re-think of this time... Just before he entered the van, I got the chance to ask him, if he was happy with the parisian audience, and he seemed to just answer he was just happy to play everywhere these days... Hoping to see you next year, during some summer festivals... Robert also is likely to come back to Paris in two weeks to perform some more interviews, and perhaps give an interview to the new french fanzine called "voodoo smiles", there is also a website dedicated to this fanzine floating around, just have a look ! "

    (Thanks SBill)

  • A second, more detailed report on the taping:
  • "The setlist was :

    Juts like heaven
    Close to me
    Lullaby
    Inbetween days
    Let's go to bed
    Lovesong
    A forest
    Friday I'm in love
    Boy don't cry (with Ray)
    Just say yes (with Saffron)
The walk (on setlist, not played?)
Why can't I be you? (on setlist, not played?)

They were so great! The show started about 30 minutes later than expected. I've heard at the end that Simon helped people w/o tickets enter the place. So it was possible to attend the show even with no ticket. The setlist, as expected, included songs from the new compilation. Starting with Just Like Heaven was a good idea, the audience was just crazy.Very good version, by the way. Close to me had good lyrics. Lullaby was pretty slow but very good, too, Robert playing with cameramen. He announced Lgtb saying "we haven't played it for long", with a face that almost said "sorry we have to play it, it's on our new record!" Lovesong was very good, very powerful. A forest... yes, A forest! Great solo at the end. Friday I'm in love, hmmm, I was very happy to hear it live again. Ray played the guitar on Boys don't cry with Robert. The two men seemed to be old friends, that was funny. Robert asked him to come and play with the band. Just say yes is a fantastic song, even better than Cut here I think (this is my opinion). Saffron seemed very happy to be here. The walk: I think Simon played the real bass line in the middle the way it is on the album, for the first time. Interesting version. I may be wrong, however... Why can't I be you: as usual, Robert was very happy to sing that one.

The general mood was fantastic, you could see how happy the band was to be on stage. The other interesting thing was that that gig was so different from the Bloodflowers shows... The singles were back again in the setlist. Well, I've always loved them, but I think today I love them more. Thanks Robert, Simon, Perry, Jason and Roger, I had such a great time! Ahhh, sweet dreams now, for sure ;) - Bruno"

Well, it WAS a concert. But 6 songs, 20 minutes, NOT a concert was the official line.

    (Thanks Bruno)

  • First report from the Paris taping for Music Planet 2 Nite:
  • "I've just heard the show on the telephone, because a friend who was there had the idea to phone me. i'm so happy!!! the setlist was:

    Close To Me
    Lovesong
    A Forest
    Friday I'm in Love
    Boys Don't Cry"

    (Thanks Jenny)

  • So what does the 'Greatest Hits' booklet have in it? Liner notes, photos, lyrics? :
  • "It is..... the cover (obviously) and a few pages on the inside that are in greyscale of the background with stars, and on every page 3 song titles with their publishing date, personnel, etc. that's it! then the back is a close up one of the stars with the track listing at the top of the page in that font. there is no track listing of the bonus disc, except on the disc itself."

    (Thanks Brian)

  • A review of the Acoustic Hits cd:
  • "I've managed to get my hands on a copy of the acoustic greatest hits set, and I thought I'd pass along my initial thoughts on hearing the revamped versions of the songs.

The entire disc has a very informal, "you are there" feel to it, much more so than the MTV Unplugged performance. The Unplugged rehearsal clips from "Play Out" might be a more apt point of comparison. The quiet but playful way that many of the songs come across almost reminds me of the "Paris" version of "Close To Me". All of the songs seem to have been mixed in more or less the same way, with Robert's vocals right at the front, and give off a very warm yet clean sound. Not all of the songs suit the acoustic treatment perfectly, but I don't think that any of them really suffer from it.

"The Walk" is definitely one of the set's highlights, even though Boris doesn't go crazy with a kazoo this time around. "Just Like Heaven" and "Cut Here" also come across very well.

Robert seems to be having a great time throughout the set, adding a few goofy vocal flourishes here and there. His take on the phone conversation towards the end of "Wrong Number" (which works as a whole despite appearing the least "acoustic friendly" of the tracks) is actually quite hilarious.

All in all, the acoustic set is exactly the sort of fun "bonus prize" that will make "Greatest Hits" worth buying for die-hards. Robert mentioned that the "Greatest Hits" track list seemed to focus on the more "up" and happy points in The Cure's career, and the acoustic set definitely brings out the fun and joy in the songs we love so much."

    (Thanks Bruce)

  • Help The Cure win the The End -World Series Playoffs:
  • "All right good job Utah The Cure won against Bare Naked Ladies in The End -World Series Playoffs. (I know I know real Hard) Now they are up against REM with U2 up against Oingo Boingo So call tomorrow and Vote.

Each "match" last's 45 minutes durring Kari Bushmans show starting @ 10 AM. "

    (Thanks Mel)

  • Cut Here radio update:
  • "I got some good news about Cut here airing over italian radio. This morning I tuned in the rock & alternative Italian station Rock FM and stumbled over a sort of request programme. I quickly sent them an e-mail requesting Cut Here and inciting the radio station to play it more often, cuz I still hadn't catched it on any Italian station, but I expected to hear it at least over this one cuz they had been great last year at the time of "Out Of this World" and "Maybe Someday". Quite soon the dj read my e-mail on air and instantly put on " Cut Here", playing it with no interruptions, too. He also added that the song was already in rotation, so I'd suggest any (Italian esp.) Cure fan to go to www.radiorockfm.com and send in your request."

    (Thanks Giacomo)

  • A vinyl re-issue of 3IB?:
  • "Three Imaginary Boys seems to have been re-issued on vinyl in Russia. It is released on a label called "Au/On" situated i Stk. Petersburg. Judging from that and the fact that the back side of the cover and the center label are completly different from the Fiction edtions, I feel quite sure that it is a bootleg of some sort. However, it is sold from entirely ordinary and "legal" shops in England and other places in Europe, so that adds a bit to the mystery. The track list is the usual one apart from a missing "The weedy Burton". All titles etc. are reprinted in cyrilic letters below the english dittos - both on the front and the back of the cover and on the inner label (it looks quite weird) The back side and the label is plain yellow (no pictures at all) with black types, so in that sense it differs a lot as well. And by the way.....the actual types are not the same as on the official and the good old The Cure logo is also missing. The sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. "

    (Thanks Lars)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Well yeturday (10-24-01) I was flipping through the channel and stumbled across Mad Tv (repeat) on TNN. Their musical guest where The Cure.. I was so happy to see it. They played Maybe Someday and Close to Me. I was happy to see this again."

    (Thanks Jennifer and Daryl)

  • A great interview with Robert from JAM! Music:
  • The Cure, Robert Smith plan Net-only releases

By PAUL CANTIN Senior Reporter, JAM! Showbiz

The Cure's upcoming best-of set will be the band's last major label release, as the group experiments with making its music available through the Internet.

Leader Robert Smith told JAM! Music that The Cure's major-label contract has expired and he's in no hurry to climb back into bed with a big record company.

"I have grown pretty tired of having to ask six people (at a label) whether I can do something," Smith said by telephone from his home in England.

"I am in my 40s. It is starting to grate. The spontaneity has disappeared. I thought with the state of the Internet, it is the perfect opportunity for me and the band to do stuff, without consulting."

Once promotional obligations for The Cure's "Greatest Hits" set (released by in Canada by Warner Music on Nov. 13) have been met, Smith and company will experiment with using the 'Net for releasing new material.

"I think that is a fantastic thing to be able to do," he explained.

"I don't want to just sign to someone for the sake of it. Everything is too slow. Too corporate. I will see how things go. We will have a year away from (the labels) and see how things go," he said, adding that the group hasn't worked out the specifics of how the official website (www.thecure.com) will make the music available.

"We are in the process of thinking how we are going to work it ... we are thinking we could remain unsigned, but do our own music on a very small level, for people who are into it," he said, adding that he's fortunate enough to be in a position where there isn't a strong need to make money off a Net-only release.

"I am in a position materially where it doesn't make a difference if I put up free music. It is not going to make or break what I or the band does," he said.

"I am not sure in the long term if anything will remain that free, because the more you read about how they are going to send the Internet along cables, it is who controls the cable and who controls the flow of information that determines it. You can have whatever you want at your website, but if no one can get there without paying, it isn't free."

Smith traces his disenchantment with the big record companies to a gradual change in thinking that climaxed with the label's handling of the group's last studio album, "Bloodflowers," which he says was "tragically under-promoted."

"Last year, we played to over half a million people, but the record companies did not know where we were on any given Friday, you know? They were not that interested. We made them money, and that was it. There was no one genuinely enthusiastic," he said.

"The music business has never been that great a business, but when I started out, it was more dysfunctional. It was much more fragmented. You could do things relatively fast and get away with it. Nowadays, it is pretty horrendous. The way everything is niche-marketed drives me mad."

As an example of how the industry has changed, Smith says he doesn't own any of The Cure's past recordings in North America. Rights to the music in other territories revert back to the band over time, but North American rights to his music are owned by the label "in perpetuity, because of some f--king ridiculous law they passed a few years ago."

"It was something the RIAA (the Recording Industry Association Of America, the major labels' lobby group) put through. It is so anti-artist, it is incredible. It almost defies belief. I don't own any past Cure material, full-stop, in North America. It reverts back in the rest of the world, but that doesn't help me."

What exactly will constitute Smith's next recordings is also up in the air. He says the group has recorded four new songs, but he has also been working on a solo project that will see him collaborating with a handful of outside artists (although he declines to name them).

Smith said he has prepared two versions of each song earmarked for the solo project, with each version set in a different tempo.

"I'm not sure whether to mix and match them or pick one and discard the other," he said. "It is so easy. I am doing it inside a computer, so that part is good fun. I can just slow the tempo down using different sets of sounds and tweaking things. You kind of get lost in it.

"And I don't have to ditch any of (the music). I can just upload it if I think it is good enough. We don't have to schedule a release four months in advance. It will be quite weird for me to drop the habits of that life."

He likened the competing solo and Cure projects to "a three-legged race -- whoever crosses the line first" will be the next release.

Whatever releases Smith and The Cure come up with in the coming year, the group is hoping to hit the road by late summer next year -- just for the fun of it, because they won't be tied to a major-label release schedule.

"We can just play festivals or small shows. It allows us to be more flexible."

Note: Check back soon at JAM! Music for more from Robert Smith, talking about The Cure's new "Greatest Hits" collection.

    (Thanks Chris and Evan)

  • Here's a look at the ticket for tomorrow's tv taping. Look's like Saffron will be joining them :

  • I've put up a Transcripts page and have added the WOXY, Zone and KENZ interviews.

  • Cut Here video update:
  • I was watching MTV New (Nordic) yesterday and they said in today's show they will show a new video from The Cure (Cut Here perhaps?) Show starts at 20.00 pm Central European Time."

    (Thanks Steven)

  • Cut Here radio update (the good and the bad) :
  • "After the first week of rotation CUT HERE did the TOP-20 of RADIO > MAXIMUM 103.7 (Moscow and Saint Petersburg) and now is on the 7th place in charts.

You can vote for it at: http://www.maximum.ru/charts_voting.asp"

    (Thanks Alexey)

"It's oct 24 and been calling Kroq all month requesting cut here, however they don't play it...I spoke to disk jockey Tammy Heide (she's a known cure fan) and asked her why weren't they playing the new song. she replied that the program manager felt it did not fit their program..I said when did the cure ever fit any mainstream programming..I further related that if the cure had announced a promo show Kroq would be the first to capitilize on the cure and playing cut here..She said she was sorry and that she would play one of their older stuff during her flash back lunch program...It's ridiculous that Los Angeles is not playing the new song (which is a good song) but they will play the sorry ass new song by no doubt, so poppy. And we know no doubt worships the cure..go figure...It's funny how our local alternative station is so mainstream.. might as well be called K-Kiss 106.7even-11."

Well I guess we don't have to worry about missing a Robert interview on KROQ.

    (Thanks Ignacio)

  • Cureheads update:
  • "Firstly a reminder about The Cureheads playing in Chicago @ The VicTheatre on November 1st. Still a few tickets left at www.ticketmaster.com and www.victheatre.com . Unfortunately both shows in Tulsa Oklahoma have been cancelled due to the venue being sold on to a dance promoter who is not interested in live music. There will be a raffle for a brand new Fender guitar with all proceeds going to the NYFD relief fund.

This will be an early show for us (ahhh finally...) Doors at 6pm We're onstage 7pm-8.30pm, on Saturday 29th December. The perfect excuse to get away from those turkey sandwiches and boring relatives & dance away to the Music of The Cure (yes we'll be doing the bloody slade song !! ). The Bill is as follows; The Cureheads, Numanesque ( Garry Numan Tribute ), The Pet Shop Noise. Tickets in advance (advised) from ; http://www.musicnonstop.co.uk/store/erol.html "

  • Curespotting:
  • "This morning, Oct 24th at 6:25 EST on Fox News they were reading an E-mail from viewers about their views on the military effort and for back ground music they were playing Maybe Someday! Made my morning."

    (Thanks Tammy)

"I recently bought The Mission’s "Resurrection" album (released last year). The inner booklet reads : 'Gratitude & Affection to : (...) Daryl Bamonte, Robert, Perry, Jason & Roger (...).' Nice, but where the hell’s Simon?"

    (Thanks Frederic)

    Oct. 24th

  • Well, another day, another missed interview. If you have a "Modern Rock" or "Alternative" station in your area, listen to it. Who knows where Robert will show up next. He has to do KROQ eventually, right? Anyway, here we go again:
  • "Just wanted to let you know that Robert Smith did an interview this morning (10/23/01) on 92.1 KFSD Premium Radio Station in San Diego. I didn't get to hear the interview because I didn't know he was going to be on. But, they say they're going to play clips of the interview tomorrow."

    (Thanks Jimmy and Craig)

  • An update on the other interview transcripts: I've got an MP3 of KENZ in Salt Lake City (thanks Ryan) and will start transcribing it today. I'd like to put the MP3 up, but don't have the space. The WOXY transcript is almost finished (thanks Kenny!) and should be here tonight or tomorrow. Jessie said she'd Fed Ex the KDGE tape to me and let me transcribe it, so that should be up by the weekend or next week depending on how soon I get it. No further update on CD101 or Edge 102. As soon as I have them, they'll be up.

  • French radio station 'RTL' will be airing a special "Saga" of the Cure on Saturday Nov. 17th.
  • (Thanks Rodolphexxx)

  • Dotmusic has a very bad review of 'Cut Here'.
  • (Thanks Steven)

  • 'Cut Here' video update:
  • "Cut Here video was shown on cable channel Moon TV in Finland yesterday. The show it was shown in is called 'Never trust a hippie'."

    (Thanks Pekka)

  • An update on the acoustic hits being played on Radio 3 in Spain:
  • "They sound "naked" but Robert sings in a lovely way, just like he did during the last tour. As he grows older he sings better and better. I don't think they have any similarity to the ones recorded for the Mtv Unplugged sessions. I like them very much (at least the ones that I've heard). "

    (Thanks David)

    Oct. 23rd

  • Just a bit more clarification about the Paris taping. Once again, it will NOT be a concert. The Cure will only be playing for roughly 20 minutes or so. Also, the press conference on thursday is not expected to be any major annouuncement, just promotion for the album.

  • Sorry everyone, I've tried to get a list of the interviews for over a week now with no success. I would think that they've all been done, but who knows. Anyway, Robert did another one this morning with 107.5 "The End" in Salt Lake City:
  • "I just thought I'd let you know that I just finished listening to an interview with Robert. It lasted about 20 minutes and was very good! Not alot of new info... but if you'd like... I can transcribe it and send it to you. It was really good and fun to hear him on a local radio show!"

We still have the WOXY & Edge 102 transcripts on the way, I'll have to do the KDGE one as soon as I get the tape, and I haven't heard back from the guy with the CD101 audio file. Hopefully, must of these will be here by the end of the week.

    (Thanks Zach)

  • 'Cut Here' radio update:
  • "Just wanted to tell you that Cut Here is n°2 on the playlist of Radio 21 ( www.rtbf.be/radio21 ), here in Belgium. So it's an upddate cos four days ago, you told on the site it was n°15. I've never heard a Cure song played so much on this radio for a very long time. Probably since Friday, I'm in Love. Almost ten years ! "

    (Thanks Olivier)

"I want to let you know that in the best Mexico city rock radio station 98.5 fm RADIOACTIVO (you can listen it by www.radioactivo.com.mx) all the monday's nights aired a show called SEXTO GRADO (sixth grade), here you know a chain of 6 bands that have something in common, and one of these groups were THE CURE, the two guest Rulo & José Enrique Fermandez talked in a very good way of THE CURE, mentioned the very rich discography, in one time CURE was the best band of the world (CURE is still being), and their incoming THE CURE GREATEST HITS, and the acoustic disc, and played CUT HERE and after a brief adverts A NIGHT LIKE THIS.

Also, the last thursday and friday in the radioactivo's morning show EL MAÑANERO i caught when they played CUT HERE, and said that CUT HERE IS A VERY GOOD SONG, VERY DELICIOUS AND ONE THE BEST CURE SINGLES.

I hope others radiostations will be playing CUT HERE very soon and very often."

    (Thanks Jorge)

"Yesterday I emailed to the local radio station "Radio Top" if they intend to play Cut Here. They mailed back immediately saying that they were just updating their computer with this song.

Just now I heard them playing CUt heRE for the first time (9:22 local time, 7:22 GMT) - it's really fantastic to have the Cure back to the radio!

You can listen online at http://www.radiotop.ch There's also a possibility for requests by email, choose "TOP Music" and "Hotline"."

    (Thanks Greg)

  • 'Cut Here' video update:
  • "I just thought I let everybody know that the cuT HEre Video will be shown on viva2(show is called 2new) on Wednesday night around 11. It was first shown last Saturday, but unfortunately I missed it (also missed it again yesterday *argh*) and only found that out yesterday....so for everyone else who missed it... zap/tune in on Wednesday 24th to viva2 around 11 pm."

    (Thanks strangie)

"this weekend they've been playing the 'cut here' video on mtv2...don't know how often, but at least it's in rotation."

    (Thanks summer)

  • Radio 3 in Spain is now playing some of the acoustic hits:
  • "I wasn't able to record "Signal to Noise" because they didn't play it. Instead they are playing the acoustic songs. They played "Boys don't cry" yesterday and today they've played "Friday I'm in love", "Boys don't cry" again and "Cut Here". Sure they'll be playing a new song from "(Acoustic) Greatest Hits" every day from now on."

    (Thanks David)

  • A new French Cure book:
  • "I would let you knwo that a new french Cure book is now available... It is written by Stéphane Chabenat, and is edited by "Prelude & Fugue" in collection "Guide Musicbook". It contains 128 pages and its size is 7.20" x 4.40" (ISBN : 2843430798). It is like a Cure dictionnary : all is sorted by letter (from A [Allen, Dave]to X [XFM]). On its cover a colored cacricatured drawing of The Cure."

    (Thanks Rodolphexxx)

  • And for all of you Cranes fans out there:
  • "CRANES in concert in Paris, in the FNAC Montparnasse Store, on november 9th, at 1pm. They will play a short gig for the release of their last album (Future songs). "

    (Thanks Jerome)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Getmusic.com often has silly articles which include the Cure. Recently, they had some cute pictures of Robert in an 80's hair feature. Now that it's almost Halloween, you can view the Love Song video as part of their spookiest video piece and Robert is featured as one of the scariest musicians around."

    (Thanks Amy)

"The new Preston School Of Industry (a band made-up of ex-Pavement members) video features one of the band dressed up as Robert! It's pretty bizarre really and I haven't quite worked out whether it's a tribute or a piss take."

    (Thanks Mark)

"On todays German TV Show "Die Quiz Show" was this Question:

What Band had a Hit with 'Enjoy the Silence' in 1990 ?

    a) Camouflage b) the Police c) Pet Shop Boys d) Depeche Mode e) the Cure f) Massive Attack

The Guy said he think it wasn't the Cure and choose Camouflage ..... and lost nearly all the Money."

    (Thanks underablackflag and Stefan)

"Another cure spotting from germany: Farin Urlaub (very famous in Germany, singer of Die Aerzte) has released his first soloalbum and it includes a song called 'sumisu' which is also his new single, it includes the line: 'und dann hoerten wir die Smiths, manchmal auch The Cure oder New Order' [and we listened to The Smiths and at times The Cure or New Order]."

    (Thanks Dennis)

  • Another Robert interview that we didn't catch. Wouldn't it be nice to have advance notice about these things? I'm still trying... :
  • "There was an telephone interview with robert on edge102 (edge102.com) yesterday evening (oct 19th). i haven't got it word for word, but once a transcript is in my hot little hands, i will most surely pass it along."

    (Thanks Carol)

  • A bit more about the sound and feel of 'Signal To Noise':
  • "It sounds to me like an excellent b-side like "It used to be me", that kind of rock song. But I think it's better."

    (Thanks David)

  • Another update on Australian release dates:
  • "Ive been in constant contact with Warner Music and Fiction re greatest hits on Oz.

    Single : November 5

    Album : November 19

DVD: Fiction as of 2 days ago , emailed warner Australia and asked whether they wanted them to produce a release in Region 4 format. Fiction should be able to tell us whether we will have our own local release of this dvd in the very near future.... Thats all i know for now."

  • 'Cut Here' video update:

    (Thanks Chris and Dennis)

  • There was a BBC Cure special on Canadian radio stations 99.3 The Fox and Chom 97.7 last night:
  • "It is from two concert, Birmingham 1987 and London 1997. the show was an hour long (with commercial), at the beginning of the show the dj did an audio BIO like those one on Elektra promo (not the same but similar)

here is the track listing :

    (Thanks JF, Greg and Dennis)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Bank Austria Credit Anstalt Slovakia is running an at least 30 sec. advertisement in major slovak radios and the music in the that clearly bounces in your ears is The Cure's LULLABY. Whoever produced this advertisement, has set the background music levels quite high, so Lullaby gets a reasonable airtime here now."

    (Thanks Milos)

"Last night I had my own Cure experience. Listening to THE Dutch Alternative Radiostation KINK FM, I suddenly heard the dj say something about The Cure. He would play one number of Pornography at half past seven and the listeners could e-mail him their favorite number of that album. At that time it was already 25 minutes past seven, so I didn't had much time left. I ran upstairs and while typing my e-mail at 28 minutes past seven, my friend heard him saying, that we should stop mailing him, because he was receiving too many. But I thought why not send it anyway. Guess what! When I came down into our room, he was reading my e-mail!! I chose A Strange Day, saying that it was A Strange Day, to let him pick a song from actually this album. Explaining me being a huge Cure fan and that they still are very active nowadays. Having a very tight fan bond. I also mentioned their new album coming out soon. The guy didn't know anything of this! :(( Although I'm sure this radiostation will pay a lot of attention to it. But he sure made my day!!"

    (Thanks Nans)

"I was looking at my friend's cd Okeeblow by Scapegoat Wax. The inside shows a picture of a record store so of course I was seeing if I could see any cure albums. But actually, there are posters behind the guy and one of the posters is the Boys Don't Cry! I was very excited cause all the faces of the people in the other posters were blurred but since you can't see Robert's face, it was left alone!"

    (Thanks TiB1015)

    Oct. 19th

  • For the record, the Paris show on Oct. 26th will NOT be a Cure concert, just a simple taping for the Ray Cokes show. It will NOT be a full setlist, probably more like 6 songs or so.

  • And for all of the Australian fans who have written in, the Greatest Hits will be released there on Nov. 19th. Still no word on the single though.
  • (Thanks Lynne)

  • 'Cut Here' radio update:
  • "Since monday of this week, Cut Here is part of the four singles that compose the Radio 21 "Hot shots" (the new singles that the radio's dj's really like). So it's on the radio minimum once every 4hours. Plus in the radio 21 playlist it's in at n°15."

    (Thanks David)

  • A few more places to catch the 'Cut Here' video:
  • "The Cut Here video is available for download in real player and windows media at http://www.getmusic.com (they also have Love Song)."

    (Thanks Joe)

MTV USA is now playing the Cure's new video 'CUT HERE' on their website. Click on bands and type in The Cure.

  • Here's a report on that special that was on Italian tv earlier this week:
  • "As you mentioned in your pages there was a Cure Special on Mtv Italy last Monday. Actually it wasn't precicely a Cure special. It was kind of 80's special. But it was cool. They showed several interviews with Robert, Roger and Simon. Then there were Siouxie, Bauhaus, New Order, and Human League members speaking. Also Depeche Mode, Smiths (no worse present for cure fans...) and then Smashing, Marilyn Manson, Placebo and someone else i can't remember. They showed Friday i'm in love, Boys don't cry and others videos' little parts. But the best stuff was at the end: 100 Years live from....Roskilde. Great. They didn't show all the song just something like 2 minutes and a half....but....it was really cool, definitely the best part of the program!"

    (Thanks Sergio)

  • Here's something sweet, the title of The Mission's new single 'Evangeline' has been dedicated to little Evie Gallup (Simon's daughter), according to singer Wayne Hussey. Mind you it's only the title, not the actual lyrics! They're about someone else altogether. : )

  • The Cureheads shows in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Majestic have been canceled. They may be rescheduled at another venue or moved to a different city. Here's the explanation:
  • "I'm very sorry to announce that due to new developments with the majestic (it was sold as of Tuesday unexpectedly) the cureheads shows there are cancelled. I have just sent an email to them and hope they get it soon as well. I apologies for all of this and was really excited to get to work with them but it's out of my hands. As of right now another promoter is interested and looking for another venue and if both the cureheads and promoter work it out it's possible the nov 2nd show may happen (possibly the cains ballroom). If this does happen I'll see to getting the info out ASAP. Once again I am truly sorry (and saddened) about all of this.

Mike Russell (sound and stage manager for majestic (but for how long I don't know)"

  • Cure cover:
  • "The well-known German Alternative Rock Bands 'Readymade' and 'Sportfreunde Stiller' go together on Tour in December. As kind of a special Christmas gift, they asked their fans which song they should record and play live together on the tour. The choice could have been made between 1. DANKE, GUT von EINS ZWO, 2. FRIDAY I`M IN LOVE von THE CURE and 3. BREAKING THE LAW von JUDAS PRIEST. And guess what...the fans have chosen Friday I'm in Love. So, if you go to the December Tour of the two bands, you will definitely hear a Cure cover! The recording of the song will be released on a cd single which is limited to 500 copies and which will only be available on the concerts!"

    (Thanks Lars)

  • The tickets for the Paris show are all gone. And before evryone gets mad, this IS a tv recording, so you probably will still get to see it. Here's a bit more info from One Million Virgins:
  • "this is what we can read in the french forum today, written by easycure, the webmaster of onemillionvirgins.com and organizer:

if you need more translation, please contact me

=the setlist? there will be an electrical part and an accoustic part

QUELLE HEURE ? Cela debutera vers 19h30-20h00...

= the time? it will start around 19h30-20h00 (7.30pm-8pm)

QUELLE SALLE ? top secret... encore qq jours et vous le saurez... c une tite salle bien intime, de 300 places..

=where? top secret...in a few days you will know.... it's a small place, quite intime, with 300seats

voila... c'est a peu pres tout pour le moment ...

    Ah si... j'ai du fermer la boite inscription@privategig.onemillionvirgins.com, tout a l'heure y'avait 400 mails en attente ...

    curely yours easycure "

    (Thanks D Ewen and Nico)

  • More info from the radio interviews. First from KDGE:
  • "Hello, my name is Jessie and I am the dj who did the interview with Robert Smith on KDGE in Dallas on Tuesday October 16. I was floored to see the info posted on your site. So I am writing to let you know that I will forward the complete transcript to you on Monday as Robert and I had a magnificent interview which was forty five minutes long and it is going to take me a little while to get it all properly transcribed for you. I am happy to provide some of the highlights for you now as a succulent little appetizer and actually I owe a debt of gratitude to Chain of Flowers because your site came up 5 or 6 times in the course of the interview. I have relied on your site for the juicy news I give on the Cure in the course of my show. So,here are a few tidbits from the interview.

We talked about Her Majesty the Queen granting an honorary knighthood to the Mayor of New York. I told him that as an heartbroken American I was compelled to thank him on behalf of all Americans for this beautiful gesture by the Queen. Robert spoke very eloquently on the bond between England and America and in the course of the discussions about the September 11th tragedy he said "life is so terribly short" we should all do our best to live life to its fullest.

He also spoke of the devastating inspiration for Cut Here which was inspired by the suicide of someone he loved very dearly...He never got to say I love you or Goodbye to this person before it was too late... and this song was his way of wrestling with those feelings.

We also bonded over our mutual belief in extraterrestrials, he said he believed in life on other planets but "NOT that they come down here to cut up cows".

He spoke of his love of the Pink Pig project and also talked of a "brilliant" Cuban Cure cover band who he was really impressed with...

There are so many lovely things he said in the course of the interview. I will get that transcribed for you and sent out on Sunday. Thank you for your website I find it so helpful in the course of my daily show prep."

    (Thanks Jessie)

"It was great!! More veiled rumors about a new Cure album and info about his solo project (including a very interesting hint that he is looking to collaborate with 6 individuals, 5 of whom are Americans...maybe Tori Amos). He provided a lot of support for the victims of 09-11 and expressed his feelings of solidarity. What a super guy!!!!"

    (Thanks Kimberley)

And here's another one we missed, CD101 in Columbus, Ohio:

"There was a radio interview on CD101 in Columbus Ohio in which Robert was askedabout the mysterious "solo album" and he revealed that he is holding off until he can actually go to be with the guests when they record - there are 7 people he wants to ask, but revealed none... I will try to get the interview encoded so that everyone can hear it if chain of flowers will host it..."

    (Thanks Gary)

And finally, you can now listen to the 94.7 The Zone interview from Chicago

    (Thanks again Keith)

  • 'Signal To Noise' aired in Spain:
  • "I'm just listening to 'Signal To Noise' on the radio (RNE Radio3) and it sounds great!!!"

    (Thanks David)

"i´ve just listened a part of 'Signal to Noise' at radio3 spanish program called "boulevard" ( 12PM here in spain), they´re now playing cut here and talking about the greatest hits and about how great the new songs are, that the group is still alive and very active and making such great songs, last year they were airing maybe someday, but now they look much more enthusiastic about the new songs. They played just say yes ( the album version, not the curve remix ) two or three days ago too and i think is much better than the remix, but i´m at work and can´t record them"

    (Thanks Birdmadboy)

  • Curespotting (I guess many of you are Drew Carey fans):
  • "I was watching Drew Carey, and to make a long story short, he married two women, they both found out, played a nasty trick on him and left him sitting in his car. He got all depressed, turned on the raido to.....Walking On Sunshine. He turns it to another station and it's....Boys Dont Cry! They played it for a while into the start of the credits, too."

  • Here's the transcript of the Chicago interview on 94.7 The Zone:
  • Robert Smith Interview on Chicago radio station 94.7 The Zone (Oct. 16th, 2001)

James: I'm James VanOsdol and joining me on the phone...it's Robert Smith of the Cure. And Robert, apparently rumors of the Cure's demise were greatly exaggerated?

    Robert: Yeah, mainly by me.

James: As of right around the time of Bloodflowers you were saying that The Cure was pretty much calling it a day and you were even entertaining the idea of a solo project.

Robert: Yeah. That hasn't been ruled out. In fact I'm almost certain that that will be the next thing that I do. But the problem with the Bloodflowers promotion stuff was post-album, pre-tour. And I felt very differently when I finished the tour last year. We played for seven months last year, and I would have played more. I loved it. I thought it was my best year with the band. It was compounded by doing this acoustic version of the Greatest Hits album this summer, which was really good fun. So I'm really enthusiastic about the band again, so I don't really see a point in calling it a day yet.

James: And here you are with this greatest hits...you've been playing in one shape or form, in one way or another, for 25 years. I'd imagine it would be pretty daunting to go into your library and say "which are the best songs to represent our years together?"

Robert: Well I was constrained by...they were going to be picked from the singles, that much I knew. I think there have been 37 or 8 singles now. So I had to discard every other one pretty much. It was difficult getting down to the final running order. The first ten kind of pick themselves, and then I really had to fight for my inclusions because everyone had their own opinion as to...I don't think I found a single person that's agreed with me. That's the beauty of being the boss. You get to have the final say.

James: Along those lines, I suppose Galore and Staring at the Sea kinda flushed out some of the things that were omitted on the Greatest Hits, like 10:15 Saturday Night or Fascination Street...

Robert: Originally, when this project was suggested to us, I wanted the Staring at the Sea and the Galore albums, the two singles compilations, just to be kind of bound together and released as a double CD as a greatest hits because that would please everyone in a way. And yet, I discovered that that would please no one. It had to be reduced down to a single CD for various reasons, none of them very artistic, I would add. But I'm happy that I stuck with it and got my way, because I think it's a good representation of that side of The Cure. I don't think in any way it represents what I've been up to for the last 25 years. I think it's a small but significant part of what we have done.

James: Well lets talk about the acoustic tracks, you mentioned that. Here you are, going song by song doing new versions of the greatest hits. Tell me, what was the inspiration to do that? Was that just kind of a way to bring a new spin to all these songs?

Robert: It was mainly driven by the early realization that fans would probably be less than enthusiastic about a greatest hits album, because we, as fans, are ourselves. Even with the inclusion of a couple of new songs, you still kind of feel that most fans will have most of those songs already. So, we were trying to think of a way that we could make the project more exciting, both for them and for us, and the acoustic album seemed like a good idea. It also made the whole thing more worthwhile for us because we got to reinterpret some of our songs and it's just good fun. We did it all in one go, in the order that you hear it. It's a bit like a mini-acoustic concert without an audience. We recorded it so it pretty much mixed itself. So what you hear is what we played. We gave ourselves two go's at each song and picked the one that we thought was the better performance. But it was a very long day...and I think it slightly tails off towards the end, as one or two members of the band sounded a little bit the worse for wear.

James: And Boris played with you on these tracks?

Robert: Yeah, we started rehearsing a couple of weeks in advance of recording, and it quickly dawned on us that as a five-piece, we were kind of lacking that drive. So we got Boris back to hit some weird percussion stuff. And it really did make a difference. It kind of brought that whole rhythmic side alive. I think when you do that acoustic stuff it sort of become, if anything, more important, those little percussive touches.

James: Along the lines of a greatest hits, is there one album in your 25 year library that you look at and say, "You know it's not really a greatest hits album, but it sure sounds like it to me?" One of those albums that you think song for song is as good a representation of The Cure as it can get.

Robert: That's tough because I've never thought the Cure as really one band. With the various line-up changes, and also the way I've changed, it always feels like at least five bands that I've been in. I would honestly say that if I had to pick one to save out of all the ones I've made, it would be Bloodflowers. It would be the last one we did because I felt that lyrically and musically, that was the most accomplished, and actually represents most how I feel at the moment. But it would because it's the most recent. And I'm not trying to promote it. I'm being very honest. I think the three that I would keep, if I could keep three, they would be Bloodflowers, Disintegration and Pornography. I think they're the three albums that mean the most to me. But then the Kiss Me, Kiss Me album is probably the album, that in some ways, I'm fondest of because it was fantastic fun making it, and that was actually like the breakthrough album for us. They all mean something to me for different reasons. It's very hard. I mean they're not the kind of albums that have just been released because that's what I did. Each album came out for a very specific reason and I felt something very particular at that time. So...it's tough. The first Cure album is the only one I would quite happily forget about. The rest of them I've really enjoyed.

James: It's interesting that you mentioned Bloodflowers, Pornography and Disintegration, because when Bloodflowers came out, it was really being heralded as the third piece to that puzzle.

Robert: Yeah, I think that's why with the greatest hits, it's a representation of one facet of The Cure. And like I've said, it's a small but significant part. It's kind of the public face of the group...to the general public. But really, the heartbeat of The Cure is contained in those three albums, I think.

James: What's next Robert? Is this the end? Will we see you on stage again?

Robert: Yeah. I'm pretty sure you will. I think my tact on this round of promotion is that we're going to be going for at least another ten years, something along those lines.

James: I've got to say, a Cure show... I've seen you a dozen times. When you guys go on stage, you play for real. You play...I can see calendar pages flying by because once you get on and start playing, you don't finish until you do it all on stage.

Robert: Yeah. I must say, I think that last year completely changed my mind about the band. It was the best touring year that we've ever had. I thought the shows were great and the audiences were fantastic. I mean, the response was just unreal. I think it would be pretty foolish for me to walk away from that.

James: Well you know we love you in Chicago, Robert

Robert: Yeah, I most certainly do know that.

James: Well thank you for calling in. The Greatest Hits comes out next month with the acoustic CD, which is absolutely a must have session. We do hope to see you back on stage here in town.

    Robert: You will(??)

James: Robert Smith, thank you very much.

    Robert: Thank you very much.

    (Thanks Keith)

  • Well, we missed a couple yesterday. Besides the WLIR, WOXY and KDGE interviews, Robert was also on 94.7 The Zone in Chicago and KJEE (92.9FM) in Santa Barbara, California. No idea if there were more, too bad we didn't get a complete list before they happened (believe me, I tried!). We do have commitments for transcripts from WOXY and 94.7 The Zone (thanks Kenny and Keith), and I'll have them up as soon as I get them. For now though, here are some brief reports:
  • "We just wanted to let you know that Robert did another radio interview this afternoon on the Chicago station 94.7 the zone around 12ish. Anyway, he once again mentioned about being with The Cure for another 10 years. He talked about the song selections for the CD and how it was hard for all to agree on what songs were picked, but that it was ok since he's the boss and had final say (and something like that-we will have to give it another listen). But that how happy he was with the Bloodflowers tour and that it was the best--and that next year they would be touring again. Those, we think, were pretty much the main points."

    (Thanks Melanie and Liz)

"Robert also gave a phone interview (from London) this morning (8:45am) to KJEE (92.9FM) here in Santa Barbara, California. I had to press my ear up to my radio in order not to offend any coworkers. He said everything you mentioned from the other interview. The most exciting news for me is the tentative plans to tour the USA next year. The DJ invited Robert to go out for a "pint sometime"... "

    (Thanks Tor)

  • Some confusion about the Paris gig and the Ray Cokes special. ARTE says the the show "Music2nite" with The Cure as guests will be aired on Nov. 27th at 23:10, but I could swear Robert said in one of the interviews that they were doing it next week. And rumors continue to fly about a "live show" in Paris on Oct. 26th. Is this a taping for the Ray Cokes show? I'll try to find out today. And I have, see above story
  • (Thanks Sascha, SBill and Yan)

    Oct. 16th

  • Robert will also be doing a radio interview on KDGE in Dallas today between 5-6pm central.
  • (Thanks Anna)

  • The Cure will be doing a live performance sometime next week in Paris for a new Ray Cokes show:
  • "I was reading an interview with Ray Cokes on a French TV magazine. He's starting a new show on Arte (...French-German channel, yeah I know that's weird !) called Music2nite or something, and he said that among his guests for the coming months would be The Cure (unsurprisingly, as most fans will know about the Robert Smith/Ray Cokes link). So there is no date yet, but watch this space !"

Like I said, it should be sometime next week, according to Robert's interview on WOXY this morning.

    (Thanks Olivier)

  • I hope someone out there recorded the interviews this morning and can transcribe them for us, or at least provide a summary. I did catch both of them, and the main thing to come out of it is that there will be no live shows to promote the album. On the WLIR interview, Robert said that they are continuing with work on the new album and would be touring it next year, even saying that they would be over here (US) by late spring or early summer. He didn't say that on the WOXY interview though, and said he wasn't sure whether the next project would be the solo album or a new Cure album. So a bit of confusion on that one. However he did state in both interviews that he would like to see The Cure continue for another 10 years, and joked that they would hopefully be able to release Greatest Hits 2 at that point.
  • He mentioned that they are still working on the dvd at the moment and are pushing up against the deadline to get it done. There will be some easter eggs hidden in the disc, but many of the things they wanted to include are tied up in copyright problems. So instead, they are going to put up a new website in connection with the Hits release and they hope to include a lot of things that they wanted to put out commercially, but were unable to. He joked that if anyone complained about them being on a website, that all they'd have to do is take it down. In other words, download everything you can on the first day, just in case it gets removed. : )

All in all, some really good stuff from the WOXY interview about the internet, computers, home recording, the effect that Mogwai has had on him, how bad the music industry has become, and a nice little shot at Elektra. The WLIR interview was ok, but your typical "fluff" radio bit with the standard questions.

If I get a transcript, I'll post it as soon as I can. Don't forget the KDGE this afternoon.

  • More sightings of the 'Cut Here' video:
  • "Yesterday they played cut here on mtv new (which is on mtv europe). Must say, best cure video i've seen in a long time (simon never looked cooler). Normally, they should air it again wednesday evening, so keep those vcr's programmed.

Also, the song is in the hotlist on Studio Brussels in Belgium, so if all Belgian fans call in or go by email to the site we can get it in 'de Afrekening'. "

    (Thanks Christoph)

"Late at night today a Greek channel called MAD TV played the Cut Here video.Actually, about 1 hour later it was played again during the show "Goodies Club" and was noted by the hosters as "very good"."

    (Thanks Christopher)

  • Here's a great review of The Cureheads gig in Belfast last friday from the Belfast Evening Telegraph:
  • "Firstly I must apologize to The Cure and their fans for mis-titling and dating The Wish album in my preview contained within The Belfast Gig Guide.

Secondly , I must say that I was taken aback by the professionality and authenticity of what must now be one of the world's best and most realistic tribute shows. I wiped away many a tear from my eye during the 2hours that followed the shuffling entrance of The Cureheads onto a smoke filled stage. The Cureheads took me to places that I hadn't revisited for a long while.

"Strange Day" took me back to the early part of the 80's when we had a strange Gothic Guy called Decklan who used to DJ at the Tuesday Youth Club Disco.

"Torture" took me back to jumping around my bedroom using a tennis racket as a guitar, just after my older brother bought the "Kiss me Kiss Me" Album then gave me a dead leg when I wore out the grooves on Just like heaven.

After about 1 hr of various B-Sides,Album Tracks and a screaming rendition of "Banana Fishbones" a young guy next to me was heard to shout over the already manic crowd, " Play something we know !" Cue (huge jazz funk hit ),"Lets GoTo Bed. "

From this point the hits spilled forth one after the other , the crowd becoming louder & louder, the dancing becoming faster & harder. The Cureheads bass player sweating and lurching lower and lower as he gyrated his bass guitar emulating "low slung bass hero", Simon Gallup.

After a gut wrenching 15 minute version of "A Forest" (which in true Tribute to THE CURE) switched to 16 bars of "Faith" then back into a Strobe driven wall of Forest guitars that has become a Cure tradition, followed The Old disco favorite " Boys Dont Cry". The group of youngsters to my left erupted into an absolute frenzy as Gary Ash and his Cureheads launched into "something they knew!"

A truly magnificent night was had by all. Personally I could have stood another 2 hrs from this awesome tribute. I have seen many tributes come and go from the Limelight but none as closely worked or who pay as much tribute to their mentors than THE CUREHEADS. They will return to The Limelight in February for their farewell tour. I will be there with my tennis racket --------Guy Rod."

    (Thanks James)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I couldn't resist sending you this silly bit of Cure spotting.....yesterday I was watching the most annoying t.v. show on BBC 2 I know of: "The Weakest Link". Suddenly amidst the usual strange and witless questions a question about the Cure popped up! It was something like what British pop group had the hit songs Love cats and Friday I'm in Love...and most surprising was the fact that the guy who had this question posed to him got it right-amazing-haha! It's nice to see them pop up in strange things like this again :) "

    (Thanks Lisa & Leo)

"I saw on Slovak television an atvertisement yesterday. I think it was some bank or institution and the background music was The Cure - Lullaby. It was nice to hear that."

  • 40TV in Spain have the video:
  • "CUT HERE video has just been shown on 40TV (a tv channel of a major radio station here in spain) in a weekly program called "formula weekend" around 12:30. Joaquin Luqui, the program conductor is very famous here and he presented the video talking about the curte spliting but as a false alarm that hasn't been confirmed or denied by the record company... well, something quite stupid really.. he also said "but we know that robert smith has a solo project... i have to say that the cure are great but the machine that keeps it going is smith, anyway, there's gonna be a new greatest hits compilation, with 3 new tracks. one of them cut here, CORTA AQUI, lets hope it's not the end of the cure". he didn't even say a release date or nothing, the video was shown entirely. my opinion of it is that is PERFECT."

    (Thanks Ale and Jose)

"Aside from seeing the video for 'Cut Here' on MMUSA today, I also heard 'Love Song' playing in Toys R Us tonight. When we got home, the new Jane was in the mail box. There is a feature with Shirley Manson, 'P.Diddy' and Alicia Keys in it. The questions they were asked were in the form of song lyrics, i.e. : "Who Do You Love?", "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?", and (ta da) "Why Can't I Be You?". "

    (Thanks Anah)

    (Thanks Emilie)

"I just wanted to tell you that I was watching MuchMusic USA like at 4:30, (channel 339 on directv service), and they passed The Cure's Cut here video, on their "oven fresh" show. "Hi, just heard "Cut Here" on Boston's WXRV 92.5, they played it around 8:45 am Oct. 11, just before going into songs in memorial of the Trade Center attack victims. But the DJ was appreciative of the song, making sure to mention the name and band several times and talk about the hits release and all the extras."

    (Thanks Justin)

"On Monday 8/10 a greek station in Athens played Cut Here.I was passing by a shop and heard it so i stood there until the end.The spokeman said "this is the new of two Cure songs" and that "this boy,Robert Smith is a bit weird cause he doesn't tell us if he is gonna quit the band" (in a funny mood). The station is called Capital 96.5 FM"

    (Thanks Christopher)

  • A change in prices for the Chicago Cureheads tickets:
  • "Due to the extremely high service charges Ticketmaster has imposed on the Cureheads show at the Vic Theatre, we have decided to lower our prices. Ticketmaster was charching 5 dollars service fee for 20 dollar tickets bringing the total to 25 dollars. Tickets are now 15 dollars for the show. if you decide to get the tickets through the box office located at Sheffield and Belmont, you will only pay 15. Office hours are 12pm-6pm. If you go through Ticketmaster, they should not be more than 20. To the fans who already purchased tickets, we apologize, and hope you understand, that the service fees were not in our control, and we did what we thought was fair by bringing the prices down since Ticketmaster would not budge.

PS--->Unfortunately the fantastic Synth-Pop band Endora had to cancel their performance. In their place we booked "Wolcott". A local band who also love the Cure and are influenced by them as well."

    sincerly,

  • Curespotting:
  • "I'm not sure if it was a rerun of VH1's Where are they now?, you never know when you turn on that channel. But they did a segment on Siouxsie and the Banshees. I loved the Banshees, they seemed like a "female" version of the Cure. Anyway, in the short bio, they did mention and show Robert was in the Banshees at one point. They also had a recent interview with Sioux and Budgee in France. Don't worry, she didn't say "Fat Bob"."

    (Thanks Chance)

"Today, VH1 aired a show called "Video Killed The Radio Star" about how MTV got started. It featured a segment on The Cure and Tim Pope.... It was nice to see them give props for Tim's work...and to recognize The Cure as being influential."

"I was in my psychology class today at Oberlin College and we were discussing backmasking of music, and one of the examples was a clip of "Close to Me" where in a spot if played backwards, it sounds like Robert Smith says something like "behind the door are women"...immediately a few other Cure fans and I from all parts of the room squealed "It's the Cure!" it was cool because we all knew from about 3 seconds of the song played backwards."

  • I'm sure many of you got thise-mail from Elektra in your inbox this morning, but here it is for those that didn't:
  • The Cure's Greatest Hits

The Cure is about to release a long-awaited Greatest Hits album that will feature two brand new tracks, including the new single "Cut Here," as well as many other unprecedented offerings from the acclaimed supergroup. The Cure Greatest Hits, which is scheduled to hit stores November 13, will be initially available in two versions: a limited edition premium package containing a bonus CD - Acoustic Hits - containing new ‘unplugged’ acoustic recordings of the complete greatest Hits tracklist, and the regular, single-disc package.

The CD release will be followed on November 27 by special DVD and VHS companion releases that will also include The Cure’s groundbreaking videos plus intimate film footage of the band performing six of the ‘unplugged’ acoustic songs mentioned above.

Robert Smith, enigmatic frontman of The Cure, says that those who have waited patiently for a definitive greatest hits package won’t be disappointed. "Say this is it - don’t say maybe, don’t say no...," says Smith. The album is an all-encompassing Cure retrospective culled from the band’s 33 commercial single releases, featuring songs from every era of their illustrious 23 year career.

Among the classics are songs such as "Boys Don’t Cry," "The Lovecats," "Inbetween Days," "Why Can't I Be You?," "Lovesong," Friday I’m In Love," and "Wrong Number." "Say this is it - don’t say hold on, don’t say slow...," says Smith. He adds that it was "good fun" recording the acoustic versions. "We wanted to do it to make the ‘hits’ package a bit more special. This collection contains the songs that are sung with a smile - The Cure’s ‘lighter side.’ At some point I hope there will be a follow-up collection to show off the best of The Cure’s ‘darker’ side."

The Cure have also filmed two videos for the new studio songs. The clips, included in the DVD and VHS releases, were lensed by noted video director Richard Anthony.

"I just wanted to let you know that last night (Oct. 2nd) they played "CUt heRE" on radio station 91x in San Diego. I e-mailed a request in for them to play it again and Robin Roth, one of the more popular D.J's there (and long time Cure supporter) e-mailed me back and said she would play it today at lunch (Oct. 3rd)."

"Cut Here Playing on 95.7 in San Diego

On Tuesday, Oct. 2nd, Steve (forgot his last name, but did 80s "Resurrection" show here in San Diego on 91X and now DJs at new 80s/Mix stations 95.7) played Cut Here back-to-back with Friday Im in Love. It's a great tune, very electronic and upbeat. Liked it quite a bit. And Steve, as one can tell since Bloodflowers, is a big Cure fan..."

  • And The Cure could not make it two in a row, as 'CuT HEre' lost out to Social Distortion on the Y100 Cage Match last night. And because it can't hurt...
  • "I just wanted to let you know that my Girlfriend, Danielle, was on Y100 last night. She was recorded voting for "cut here" by saying "The Cure- Definitely!" after the DJ said "Lets hear from the female contingent". She is a relatively new Cure fan, I took her to her first 2 Cure shows in 2000. I was wondering if you could post something from me thanking her for calling in and voting for me as I am in NYC, and could not get through for some reason.

    ~Greg"

  • The Curve remix is NOT the version that will be on the album. It may turn up somewhere down the road, or it may not. No idea how XFM got a copy of it, but I hope you enjoyed it while you could. If you hear anyone else playing it, please let us know.

  • So what does Curve have to say about all of this? Here's a question and their answer from their official website:
  • Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 23:40:15 +0100

Just read on a cure site (www.chainofflowers.com) that XFM will be playing the Curve remix of 'Just Say Yes' (the new Cure single with Saffron) during Claire's show. i don't remember hearing about curve doing this remix (on either this site or the cure site). did this happen or is this mis-information? thanks.

    name: christopher

Yes Curve have done a remix of a new Cure song called "Just say yes" which is a duet with Saffron. As far as we are aware there is no plan to release this song as a single but both Dean and I are confident that Robert will find some way of using the remix because he loves it. As for XFM playing it we have no idea but we think that it's very nice of Claire to give it an airing and take it as a massive compliment..Nice one..Cheers

  • Good job Philadelphia! 'CuT HEre' beat out a new song by Stone Temple Pilots on last night's Y100 Cage Match. The Cure will face a new challenger tonight at 10pm eastern, so call in and support it again at 800-232-1003.
  • (Thanks TankgirlOi and Mark)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Irish pop singer Naimee Coleman (www.naimeecoleman.com/) appeared on Irish TV on Sunday performing an acoustic cover of Lovesong. It's also on her new album, "Bring down the moon". It is really excellent - there's a snippet on her website, along with a video."

"Thought you might like to know there's a somewhat interesting posting thread going on at RollingStone.com right now, if you go there scroll down to the "Post of the Day" box and follow the link. On a "what music has influenced you" topic a lot of people are posting about the Cure, varied opinions of course but mostly very positive."

    (Thanks Justin B.)

"The Czech translation of *Charlotte Sometimes* by Penelope Farmer (called Klara a Karolina) says in its cover info: "many of you are probably familiar with the song Charlotte Sometimes by pupular british band the Cure, but few know, that it has been inspired by this book"..etc. so the song was in fact the impulse for the Czech translation"

"On Sunday 30th of September, I was looking through the Sunday Times Style Magazine's fashion special, when I noticed a Cure reference. In an article about the latest styles saying "real life goths have seen their nocturnal dress code turned into a fashion statement", various catwalk shows were reviewed and apparently one of them, the Marc collection, was "...all shown with super-skinny jeans and full tiered skirts to a soundtrack by The Cure."

The next day I was watching Never Mind The Buzzcocks, a music quiz show British terrestrial TV's BBC2. The teams were given parts of lyrics and had to finish the line. One of the teams was given "10.15 on..." and they answered correctly with "...a Saturday night". It's always nice to hear references to The Cure, but two in as many days was pleasantly unexpected...hopefully there will be plenty more with the release of the new single."

    (Thanks Celine)

    Oct. 1st

  • Well, that was certainly different wasn't it? How many of you caught the 'Just Say Yes' Curve remix on XFM today? Very "rock" wasn't it? What did you think of the Saffron/Robert merging? In a way, it's hard to judge it, since we don't know if that is the album or single version, or just a remix. Either way, it's not my cup of tea. I was just hoping that it could come close to being a gem like 'CuT HEre'. Oh well, we still have 'Signal To Noise' to look forward to, and that one is said to be fantastic.

  • XFM will be airing a Cure Greatest Hits Special on the Claire Sturgess show today between 8 - 11pm UK time. No idea what she'll play, but hopefully she'll have clearance to play the remix. Anyway, the show will be on from 3-6 pm eastern / 2-5 pm central / 1-4 pm mountain and noon - 3pm pacific in the US.
  • Also, 'CuT HEre' is #20 on the XFM request line.

Update: There will not be a Cure Special on XFM tonight, but Claire will be playing the Curve remix of 'Just Say Yes' on the show.

    (Thanks Toni, Paul and Claire)

  • A new Cure tribute band?:
  • "Paul here from To The Sky (www.tothesky.20m.com), i live in Cork, Ireland and i've just done an ad for a guitarist to put in a local record store, its for a Cure tribute. The guitarist must be a cure fan obviously, must have their own gear and most importantly, must know that its not a job offer, money will come from gigs. "

    (Thanks Paul)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Hi! this is a translation of an extract of an article from a Belgian newspaper. The article dates from November 2000 but I only just found it and it was too good not to let you share it!

Irish singer Luka Bloom about one of his 5 heroos: Robert Smith

    ROBERT SMITH (THE CURE)

Luka Bloom: 'Robert Smith is one of my new heroes. Someone I discovered by making my cover album. What intrigues me in Robert Smith? Every time I used to hear a Cure song, it did something to me. Eventhough I never really thought about it. There was something special, something I could hear through the wall of sound the Cure always creates. When I was doing my cover album I thought:'I must take a closer look at this guy' And this is what I found, in Robert Smith: something special in his voice, something magical in his almost childlike nature, something pure, innocent and fragile. Special qualities. Especially for a man. And that is what makes him one of my heroes.'

He also describes Robert, Bono and Thom York as 'heroic figures'. The other heroes of mr Bloom are: Joni Mitchel, Bono, Bob Dylan and Luc Besson. "

    (Thanks Nick)

"On the french TV, A fashion program used to present each of its article the following titles:
