The Cure To Release New 'Greatest Hits'
Wednesday, September 26, 2001
Launch - The Cure is set to release two versions
of its Greatest Hits collection, which is scheduled to hit stores
in November. Available on that date will be
the regular single-disc collection and a limited-edition premium
package. The limited edition will include
a companion CD, Acoustic Hits, which will be a CD containing
stripped-down versions of all the songs on
the Greatest Hits.
In a statement Cure frontman Robert Smith talked
about the acoustic versions. "We wanted to do it to make the
'hits' package more special. This collection
contains the songs that are sung with a smile--the Cure's 'lighter side.'
At some point I hope there will be a follow-up
collection to show off the best of the Cure's 'darker' side."
Two brand-new songs are on the collection,
the new single "Cut Here," and "Just Say Yes." The latter is a duet
with Saffron of Republica. Videos for both
tunes have been shot and are included in a forthcoming DVD and VHS
Greatest Hits release arriving in stores November
27(US).
The DVD and VHS companion features all the
Cure's videos and intimate footage of the band performing acoustic
versions of six of its hits.
Tracks on the album include "Boys Don't Cry,"
"A Forest," "Let's Go To Bed," "The Walk," "The Lovecats,"
"Inbetween Days," "Close To Me," "Why Can't
I Be You?," "Just Like Heaven," "Lullaby," "Lovesong,"
"Never Enough," "High," "Friday I'm In Love,"
"Mint Car," "Wrong Number," "Cut Here," and "Just Say
Yes."
One song left off the album is the controversial
"Killing An Arab," which could have created additional
controversy in light of the World Trade Center
and Pentagon attacks. The song was included on the 1986's
Staring At The Sea: The Singles. Smith told
LAUNCH about the track. "Suddenly it was drawn to the attention
to a much, much wider audience, and in America
there was a ferocious lobby for us to withdraw the album from
the shelves or take the song off," he said.
"And I refused to compromise. I ended up doing a whole week of
explanatory interviews in America and like
radio and TV things explaining of course trying to get across it has
nothing to do with killing Arabs. And unfortunately
it fell at a time where there was a lot of anti-Arab feeling. It
just kind of happened at the wrong time
for us."
He added that, upon its release in the late
'70s, "the song actually sold very few copies, and it didn't chart. It
was taken from a French existentialist's book,
and it was being misconstrued and it was being misunderstood. It
had nothing to do with racism." Smith noted
that some good did come out of the controversy. The band did some
performances to benefit homeless Arab and
Jewish children and various other organizations.

ROBERT SMITH'S HOME MOVIES
Goth grandfathers the Cure can't be satisfied
with merely releasing a Greatest Hits album, so they're throwing
in a bonus disc and a home video as well.
The Hits album, due November 13th, includes 16 Cure classics like
"Boys Don't Cry" and "Just Like Heaven," plus
two newly recorded tracks "Cut Here" (the album's first
single) and ""Just Say Yes," featuring a duet
between Cure frontman Robert Smith and Republica singer
Saffron. Those sessions produced one other
new song, "Signal to Noise," that won't be on the Greatest Hits
disc. A limited number of albums will be released
with a bonus disc of newly recorded acoustic versions of all 18
tracks. The new songs and acoustic versions
were produced by Mark Plati (David Bowie, Natalie Imbruglia).
Two weeks after the album's release, a Cure
home video (also titled "Greatest Hits") will be issued on DVD
and VHS. The package contains videos of all
the album tracks, including the two new tunes, plus studio footage
shot during the recordings of six of the acoustic
versions.

Saffron on Cure "Hits" CD
"The Greatest Hits" to feature duet with Republica singer, bonus acoustic disc
Early pressing of the Cure's The Greatest Hits
album, an eighteen-track overview of their twenty-plus-year
career, will feature a bonus CD of acoustic
takes of those same songs. In addition to Cure staples like "Boys
Don't Cry," "Let's Go to Bed" and "Just Like
Heaven," the compilation will include two new tracks, "Cut Here"
and "Just Say Yes," a duet with Saffron, the
flame-haired Republica singer.
The new and acoustic tracks were recorded this
summer at London's Olympic Studios with producer Mark Plati
(David Bowie, Natalie Imbruglia). The sessions
also produced a third song, "Signal to Noise," which will not be
included on The Greatest Hits.
The band will follow up the album on November
27th with a VHS and DVD of the same name, the latter to include
half-hour film recorded at the studio.
The project comes as a surprise to many Cure
fans, because, after the band finished recording 1999's
Bloodflowers, frontman Robert Smith implied
that the Cure would break up and that he would embark on a solo
project.

Cure Bolsters 'Hits' With New Songs, Acoustic Disc
Pioneering U.K. modern rock outfit the Cure
has sidestepped longstanding breakup rumors by including two
new songs on its forthcoming "Greatest Hits,"
due Nov. 13 on Elektra. The songs, "Cut Here" and "Just Say
Yes," were recorded in London and mark the
group's first new songs since the 2000 album "Bloodflowers."
That set debuted at No. 16 on The Billboard
200 and has sold 277,000 copies in the U.S., according to
SoundScan.
"Just Say Yes" is described as "something of
a departure," as it features frontman Robert Smith dueting with
ex-Republica vocalist Saffron. "Cut Here"
will be worked to North American radio outlets as a single. Videos
for both new songs were recently shot with
director Richard Anthony.
Many of the 18 tracks on "Greatest Hits" have
appeared on the Cure's two prior singles collections, 1986's
"Staring at the Sea" and 1997's "Galore,"
including "Just Like Heaven," "Friday I'm In Love," "Boys Don't
Cry," and "The Walk." To make the set worthwhile
to fans that already own these songs, the Cure has recorded
new acoustic versions of all 18 cuts on "Greatest
Hits" and will bundle them together as a limited edition,
two-CD set.
The Japanese edition of the album excludes
"The Walk," but substitutes "Pictures of You" and "The
Caterpillar."
On Nov. 27, the group will issue a "Greatest
Hits" VHS/DVD, featuring clips for all 18 songs, including the
two new ones. The DVD features 30 minutes
of footage of the band recording acoustic versions of such tracks
as "Just Say Yes," "Lullaby," and "Close to
Me."

The Cure Readies Two Greatest Hits Discs For November
Sep 26, 2001, 11:50 am PT
More light has now been shed on the previously reported acoustic hits collection coming soon from the Cure.
The pioneering English goth-rock band is now
offering two albums to fans: Greatest Hits, which will include
the new single "Cut Here," as well as one
additional new track ("Just Say Yes") and a slew of hits from every
era of the band. And secondly, as a limited-edition
bonus disc, Acoustic Hits, will be included and contains
unplugged versions of several classics including
"A Forest," "Close to Me," and "Lullaby."
Elektra Records will release both albums on
Nov. 13. A few weeks later, on Nov. 27, DVD/VHS companion
releases will follow, which highlight the
greatest of the band's videos, as well as footage of it performing the

Cure Remedy Breakup Rumors With New Cuts, Greatest Hits LP
By Joe D'Angelo
09/25/2001
Lovelorn rockers the Cure are releasing a greatest-hits
package containing two new surprises certain to make
even their most downtrodden fans smile.
Greatest Hits, slated for November 13, amasses
16 choice cuts spanning the British group's 23-year career,
including the classics "Boys Don't Cry," "Just
Like Heaven" and "Lovesong," according to an Elektra Records
publicist.
Additionally, two new songs, "Just Say Yes"
and the album's first single, "Cut Here," are included on the
collection, putting to rest rumors of the
band's demise.
The LP will be issued in two versions: a limited-edition
set that carries a bonus disc of acoustic renditions of all 18
tracks, as well as a conventional, single-disc
package.
Two weeks after the album drops, a home video,
on both DVD and VHS formats, will follow. Also titled Greatest
Hits, the visual companion contains all the
videos of the album tracks, including the two new tunes, as well as
studio footage shot during the recording of
six of the acoustic renderings: "A Forest," "The Lovecats," "Close
to Me," "Lullaby," "Friday I'm in Love" and
"Just Say Yes."
The Cure's most recent studio album was last
year's Bloodflowers.
New Cure, they haven't broken up just yet
There is still life in The Cure. Lead singer
Robert Smith has been threatening to disband the band ever since he
turned 40 but the band have just re-emerged
from the studio with some new music.
The Cure have been in Olympic Studios in London
recording three new songs for inclusion on an upcoming best
of album. The tracks were co-produced and
engineered by Mark Plati.
The new songs are 'Cut Here' (possibly the
first single), 'Signal To Noise' and 'Just Say Yes'. The latter track is
also a duet. Saffron from Republica sings
with Robert Smith in something that Smith himself calls "a departure" or
the band.
The running order of the tracklisting was put
together by Smith who considers it to be "a representative of The
Cure's defining moments as a singles band
(or something like that)".
"Signal To Noise" will be found on the "Cut
Here" single and the UK and Japanese version of the album will
include "The Caterpillar" and "Pictures of
You" and exclude "The Walk". Robert, (shaking his head says that it
"is because o the usual weak excuse record
labels give about imports and do not ask".
The album will be initially released as a collectors
2CD set with a bonus disc of all 18 tracks performed
acoustically.
Videos have already been made for "Cut Here" and "Just Say Yes".

From Cadena40

New "Cuts" from the Cure
Despite rumors and statements to the contrary,
it seems the Cure are not ready to pack it in just yet. The
veteran mope-rockers will issue a new Greatest
Hits album in November. The album will feature two new
studio recordings from Robert Smith and company.
In addition, the first pressings of the album will come with a
limited edition double disc featuring new,
acoustic recordings of Cure favorites. The hits album will be preceded
by a new single, "Cut Here," in late October.
From N.M.E.
CURE-IOS!
THE CURE are to re-record acoustic versions
of some of their hit singles for their forthcoming 'GREATEST HITS'
compilation.
The group release their Greatest Hits album
on November 12. A spokesperson for the group told NME.COM that
the record will feature two brand new studio
recordings from the group.
In addition, the album will inirially be released
as a limited edition double disc, with the extra record containing new,
acoustic recordings of some of their "big
hits".
The Cure have snubbed persistant rumours of
a split to return to the studio, and as a result the album will be
preceded by a brand new single, 'Cut Here',
which is released on October 29.
recientemente
en un estudio de Londres.
Robert Smith se plantea incluso volver a salir
nuevamente a la carretera.

CURE GREATEST HITS
The Cure are working on new singles that will
be featured on a Greatest Hits package. Due in the fall the
collection should squash any ideas that people
have that the band have broken-up. Recently reunited for the
Roskilde Festival in Denmark, the band will
record at least two new tracks for the compilation. A possible b-side
collection may also follow later this year.
The band is planning to install a Webcam in the studio and fans will be
able to watch them recording at www.Thecure.com.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, THE CURE
Contrary to popular belief, The Cure's 2000
album Bloodflowers will not be the last new material from the band. Robert
Smith and company plan to record two new songs for a Cure greatest hits
album that should be released before the end of the year. Fans will be
able to monitor the recording sessions' progress via an online "Curecam"
that will soon be operational on the band's website at www.thecure.com.
The Cure's last live performance was at Denmark's Roskilde Festival in
June, and no future live gigs have been announced so far.

Another Dose of The Cure
As the typical Barbra Streisand story goes, “No, really, this is it. I'm done.” Yeah, right.
Despite having again suggested retirement following their last tour in support of 2000's Bloodflowers, The Cure have apparently decided to concoct some new (no doubt dark and emotive) tunes in the studio and keep the creative juices flowing.
On their official website, singer Robert Smith and band reveal they're working to enhance an upcoming anthology, stating, “It looks like we will be going into the studio very soon to record a couple of new singles for The Greatest Hits collection mooted for a Fall release.”
After more than two decades and a career that proved both pivotal and progressive in the ‘80s, Smith (along with bassist Simon Gallup, guitarist Perry Bamonte, keyboardist Roger O'Donnell and drummer Jason Cooper) is also planning to put together an additional B-sides collection for release sometime after.
Until then, fans can download “Pirate Ships,” a Wendy Waldman song Smith got his hands on and covered during his spare time in 1989 while working on one of the Cure's best works, Disintegration. Smith discovered the master dat while undergoing a “recent big clear up” and has posted it online.
Stay tuned for any news on another Cure "farewell" tour soon ... Maybe Barb can be the opening act.

THE CURE GET THEIR HITS OUT
THE CURE are compiling a 'GREATEST HITS' compilation, and have entered the studio to work on new material. According to a posting on the band's official website, www.thecure.com, The Cure will enter the studio "very soon" to work on a selection of new singles which will feature on the album.
The record is due for release in the autumn, and may be followed by a 'B-sides' collection also.
The Cure have dismissed persistent rumours
that they are to split, and as well as working on new material, performed
at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark earlier this month (July 1).

The Cure Won't Quit
July 13, 2 p.m. ET, RollingStone.com
Despite the general perception that 2000's Bloodflowers was to be the Cure's last official effort, Robert Smith and the boys are heading into a U.K. studio to record two new tracks for a greatest hits album, due by year's end on Elektra.
Fans will be able to monitor the band's progress shortly via a "Curecam" online at www.thecure.com. Smith is currently mulling over the track listing for the album, which is not expected to extend beyond one disc.
The Cure regrouped to play the closing set at Denmark's Roskilde Festival in June, but have no concrete plans for further live appearances.
JOLIE LASH (July 12, 2001)
From Undercover:
The Cure : Greatest Hits
The Undercover Review
The Cure best of's have been done to death.
We've already had two volumes of them, a mix album and three live
albums. So what makes this one so special?
Simple, the bonus disc. The Cure have shortlisted their greatest hits
on to one CD, added two new songs but best
of all, there is a complete second disc featuring exactly the same songs
in the same order done acoustically. Now that's
worth the bucks alone.
You can see by the songlist all your favs are
here. The two new ones are the ones at the end. "Cut Here" is a
techno rocker but it constantly amazes me
how someone like Robert Smith can create that pop hook year in, year
out. He was not swayed from The Cure formula
for these two songs. "Just Say Yes" is the Smith love popsong.
The entire Cure career is spanned here and
if you haven't grabbed either of the two previous compilations, then
this one is a good catchup round.
However, for the real fans, the bonus acoustic
disc is what you will desire but you have to be quick. In Australia,
only the first 5000 discs feature the bonus.
CD2 replicates the songlist of CD1 exactly.
The same songs in the same order but totally stripped back. The Cure
were always a studio band par excellence when
it came to recording. Hearing them for the first time in the acoustic
environment brings a whole new dimension to
the catalogue. Be quick, buy early and enjoy.
