New Album - The Cure are currently recording a new album and release is planned for later this year. Read more (outdated now) at NME and Soundgenerator. And see a video clip of Robert announcing it at the Benicassim press conference.
Update - The new album will be released under the Suretone Records imprint and is "penciled in" for a 4th quarter release, possibly on Oct. 30th, 2006 in Europe and on Oct. 31st, 2006 in North America.
Update (08-11-06) - Time to use the eraser on that pencil. Robert now says the new album could be a double and probably won't be released until some time in 2007.

Digitally Remasterd Albums - The Cure will be releasing remastered versions of their studio albums, starting with Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography. Each will be a 2-cd set, with the 2nd disc containing demos, remixes, and unreleased material.
Update - 3IB was released on Nov. 29th, 2004 in Europe, Dec. 7th, 2004 in the US, and on Feb. 9th, 2005 in Japan. SS, Faith and Pornography were released in Europe on April 25th, 2005, North America on April 26th, 2005 and in Australia on May 16th, 2005.
Update - The Top, The Head On The Door,  Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and The Glove's Blue Sunshine, are scheduled for release on August 8th, 2006 in North America and August 14th, 2006 in Europe.

  • Here are the lyrics (possibly a few mistakes) for the three unreleased songs from 'The Cure' sessions:

  • A BOY I NEVER KNEW

To have his arms around me, to sense his perfect trust
    I’d give everything I have…everything…

I’d love to see him sleep, I’d love to know his dreams.
To hold his hand in mine and listen to him breathe.
To watch him as he wakes, look into his eyes
I’d give all I ever had for a moment of his life.

He’s my heart and my soul.
He’s my blood and my bones.
He’s my prayers and my hopes
    My wishes and dreams
Seems so long ago, so long ago…

I’d love to hear him laugh, I’d love to catch him smile.
To join him so close, to feel him by my side.
To have his arms around me, sense his perfect trust
I’d give everything I have for a moment of his love.

He’s my heart and my soul.
He’s my blood and my bones.
He’s my prayers and my hopes
    My wishes and dreams
    Seems so long ago,…

He’s my heart and my soul.
He’s my blood and my bones.
    He’s my wishes and dreams
    My prayers and my hopes

    A boy I never knew
And the man I’ll never know.
    I’ll never know…

To watch him as he wakes, look into his eyes
    I’d give all I ever had…

Note - This is what Robert had to say about this song in an interview with Italian magazine Rockstar (Aug. 2004):

"I wrote many sad songs for this album and Ross is sorry I did not include them. He believes they're the best of them all. One is the saddest I've ever written. It's called "The boy I never knew". I played it to everyone who came to the studio, and everyone broke in to tears. Too much for me. I didn't feel like releasing it now, but someday I will."

    PLEASE COME HOME

I look out the window watching the world go round.
I wonder where you are now. I wish you were here now.
Waiting at the window I watch the rain come down.
Wondering what to do now. Wishing you were here now.

    I don’t understand why you couldn’t stay.
I don’t understand why you went away.
    I don’t understand why you wouldn’t say.
I only know I need you now to…

    Please, come back to me.
    Please, come home.
    Please, come back to me.
    Don’t leave me here alone.
Knocked down here on my own…

I watch out the window whispering hopeless words.
I won’t let you go now. I want you here now.
Watching out the window, whisper a helpless world.
Pulling me back now.  Wanting you here now.

    I don’t understand why you couldn’t stay.
I don’t understand why you went away.
    I don’t understand why you wouldn’t say.
I only know I need you now to…

    Please, come back to me.
    Please, come home.
    Please, come back to me.
    Don’t leave me here alone.
Don’t leave me on my own.
    Don’t leave me here alone.
Knocked down here on my own…

Still I wait at the window watching the world go round.
I wonder where you are now.
    Please, come home…

    STRUM

It will be so perfect, I said. Too beautiful for words.
It will be…so perfect I said.

My words are stupid, worthless, merely so much noise
I want to cover up the wall
Good things really never run the first time through
    Adapted for our latest ploy
    A pantomime of feeling good…good…good!
And waving as the smile just sits
But really I have never cared less in my life
    To ever smile again.

I sit before the mirror white and draw my red eyes black.
My head is full of everyone you ever knew
    Reflected, tired and cracked.

My act is empty, hopeless only so much luck
A show to cover up the stage
All this strewn to satisfy another you in
    Acting out this tired charade.
    A pantomime of feeling good…good…good…good…gooooood!
Drowning as the smile drips down.
But really I have never cared less in my life
    Whatever turns around.

I sit before the mirror cold and paint my black mouth red.
Your head is full of everyone I ever knew
    Reflected, old and dead.

It will still be perfect, you said. Too beautiful for words.
    It will still…be perfect…

And please understand that these songs ARE NOT from the new album or single. The band recorded 20 tracks for the 2004 'The Cure' album - 15 found their way to various versions of the album, 2 were used for b-sides and these are the remaining 3 that didn't make it out at the time. And that doesn't even get into all of the instrumental demos that have never been officially released. So if the rumored deluxe edition of 'The Cure' ever comes out, they have more than enough to fill an extras disc.

  • Curespotting:

  • "I saw the Canadian film, C.R.A.Z.Y, at Melbourne Film Festival on the weekend.  About a boy born into a catholic family on christmas eve,
purported to be a "healer" by the tupperware lady.  Hilarious and heartbreaking and Cure (10.15 Saturday Night) blasting out of the cinema speakers at a pivotal moment.  Best movie I have seen in a while, with Cure like icing sugar :)"

    (Thanks Jason)

"During an interview with KROQ in Los Angeles Jared Leto lead singer of 30 Second To Mars was asked who inspires him musically, he AGAIN sited The Cure by saying "I really like Robert Smith from The Cure"."

  • And all that could have been...in so many different ways....

  • "Wanted to give you some info on the 3 unreleased tracks from the cure's 2004 album. these were not featured on any version of the album or b-side
    releases:

A Boy I Never Knew - AMAZING! Possibly the most honest and mature song Robert has ever written. Lonely Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Light Drums and Sparse String Section. Reminds me of a children's lullaby (which makes sense since he supposedly wrote it for the son he never had) Could be compared to "going nowhere" in tone, but the simple, yet catchy tune reminds me of something from Kiss Me. Overall the track could have easily fit on Disintegration.

Strum - Another song that could have lived on Disintegration (as a b-side probably) although sonicly the track has more in common with Wish-era. The lyrics are very clever and literate in a way that Robert hasn't exhibited since The Top.

Please Come Home - Another song that could have easily lived on the second side of Disintegration. The track seems a little unfinished until the
lead-in to the chorus. Then it really takes off. Jason's tribal drumming, mixed with the monolith keyboards competing with Robert's vocals really
brings me back to 1989. Sends chills and makes you realize the slow undistinguished build-up only sells the song more.

And there you go. Why these tracks never made it onto the album, I have no idea. These, plus the songs available on the vinyl release (TGB, Going
Nowhere, This Morning), easily put the 2004 album up there with Disintegration in my opinion. My favorite band of all time has not lost one ounce of talent or focus over the last 15 years- they've just made a few bad choices in terms of song selections for their albums. Maybe they'll follow their hearts on the next one...."

  • More on the Porl Signature Guitar from the new issue of Play magazine:

  • "There is an interview with Michael Ciravolo, President of Schecter, in issue 38 (Jul/Aug) of Play magazine.  (a free magazine for musicians, from Soundcontrol - "The UK's number one musical instrument retailer" - I'm quoting/stealing from there article, so leave the official plug in please).

The Cure/Robert/Porl pop up as a subject:

Play: "You have many artists using the Diamond Series but currently you only have one signature artist, Robert Smith, with his UltraCURE electric and RS-1000 accoustic.  Why?"

M.C.: "If you look back we had at one point six signature guitars like a Jerry Horton, a Tommy Lee model and stuff - they're still our friends and still play our guitars.  We might do some more next year.  We're talking with the guys in Avenged Sevenfold and Jeff Loomis from Nevermore.  As guitar playing seems to be getting back to technique and proficient playing it seems like it might have more relevance for us to do it now.

The Robert Smith thing is different.  We're huge Cure fans.  To have Robert - who's never endorsed anything - wanting to design a guitar with us was just, cool!  To see a band that I grew up with and respect, and to design a guitar with him, and then see him play their entire catalogue with it was a really cool thing.

We're also working with Porl Thompson who's back in the Cure.  He played with them during their nineties heyday but left the band to go and play
with Page and Plant.  But he's a brilliant guitar player and he's using a Corsair.  We're working with him on a signature model.  He's got a UK street tattoo artist, Kev Grey, designing a graphic - it'll be a pretty wild looking Corsair".

While on the subject of noteworthy dudes who wear makeup, let's not overlook Cure frontman Robert Smith, a man who seemingly smears his

So as not to be too lazy and I went and looked it up - the concert was 12/12/2005 - Hammersmith Apollo, London."

  • More sad news last week, with the death of Syd Barrett:

  • Eleven Reasons Why Syd Barrett Was Cool

    Tuesday July 11, 2006 @ 06:00 PM

Syd Barrett, an original member of Pink Floyd and one of the true icons of the psychedelic late '60s, has passed away at age 60. Rather than dwell on the tragic passing of this amazing musical figure, we here at ChartAttack want to celebrate the great moments of this man's career. Without further ado, here are 11 reasons why Syd Barrett was cool: ...

    # 10. Here's a list of just a few different bands and musicians he had an affect on: This Mortal Coil, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Cure's Robert Smith, Johnny Marr (formerly of The Smiths), My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields, Primal Scream, Voivod, The Libertines, The Beta Band, Julian Cope, Robyn Hitchcock, The Flaming Lips, R.E.M., Mercury Rev, The Dead Kennedys' East Bay Ray, Camper Van Beethoven, Pearl Jam, Love And Rockets, Elevator To Hell, The Melvins, Transatlantic, Phish, Dream Theater, Graham Coxon (formerly of Blur) and former Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante.

I propose to hold, for the 3rd year running, another Cure picnic at The Cure's Hanging Gardens location in Twickenham.

Come along, bring food, alcohol etc, but please do respect the gardens and dispose of your rubbish afterwards.  There are pubs along the riverside that we can dive into if the weather turns bad, but hopefully it will be okay.

Please see my flyer for details, and spread the word!"

  • "Perhaps you've heard, but the astronauts on the Space Shuttle woke up this morning to "Just Like Heaven".  I saw the report on CTV Newsnet, where the anchor called it "Seems Like Heaven, by the Cure", but at least the music playing was right!

A quick google finds this report: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=2197649

-- The crew awoke Sunday to a recording of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven," chosen by astronaut Piers Sellers' family. Sellers told Mission Control the song reminded him of "the wild, happy, drinking-beer years of my youth."

"From a San Francisco Chronicle interview of "The Speakers:

    1. The Speakers' music should be filed between:

The albums Peter and I listen to the most together are "Disintegration" by the Cure, "Birds of My Neighborhood" by the Innocence Mission, and "Vespertine" by Bjork. To us, if you know these albums, you can play "spot the influence" all over the Speakers' albums.

    3. If you could collaborate on a song with any person, living or dead, who would that be?

Robert Smith. Karen Peris. Bjork. The new Three Tenors!

    4. If a junior high school asked you to play a cover song at the next talent show, what song and school would you choose?

... I would actually love to hear a Cure song played by my junior high band played at the actual time we had begun to listen to them. Maybe "The Same Deep Water as You." That would be awesome.

" i was just watching "Terzake", a documentary show on Canvas, a flemish TV-channel. This time's show was about some phenomenon apparently called "fooding" ( some kind of new hype that makes chefs kind of ignore all common rules of "cuisine", or rather mix them all up )... Anyway, they
showed images of some kind of "fooding" private party somewhere in Paris, in some kind of basement. During one of the scenes at that private party, you could hear "Lullaby" playing in the background. The food seemed goddarned aweful b.t.w.."

  • Anyone know about these mashups?

  • "I've recently heard two Cure vs. Snoop mashups at clubs in San Francisco, both featuring "Drop It Like It's Hot." The mashups are titled "Drop It Like It's Hot Hot Hot" and "Drop It Like It's Close To Me" (I'm sure everybody can figure out which Cure songs they're mixed with). I have been unable to find the tracks ANYWHERE! If somebody knows where these tracks can be purchased or downloaded, I would very much appreciate it."

    (Thanks Jordan)

  • Curespotting:

  • "In the next Michel Gondry movie "The Science of Sleep",  the room of Stephane (played by Gael Garcia Bernal) is decorated with The Head on
The Door, The Top, and Three Imaginary Boys LP covers pinned on the wall.
A great hommage in an incredible movie, by one of the best filmmakers of our times. Awesome!"

    (Thanks
    Francois)

"Robert's picture is in July Elle on page 59. The article is "How to Read a Music Review".  The Cure, Joy Division and Gang of Four represent Post-punk/Old School music in the guide and it's Robert's (Bloodflowers era) picture that represents them."

  • More talk of a Halloween release for the new album:

  • From PR Newswire

"Alongside Angels and Airwaves, Suretone releases for the remainder of the year include The Pink Spiders' debut album "Teenage Grafitti" (produced by Ric Ocasek) which will hit stores on August 1st. You can catch the Pink Spiders on this summer's Warped Tour. Next is Rooney's sophomore album due out in early September. Rooney will join Kelly Clarkson as her main support for her summer tour. New Found Glory follows Rooney with an album due out on October 10th. Look for them to start a massive headlining tour in September. Later in the year Suretone will release Weezer's greatest hits that will feature several new tracks. On October 31st, Halloween, Suretone plans to release a new studio album by The Cure."

    (Thanks Spencer)

"Just a little something I heard while listening to cfny 102.1, a Toronto station that I am thankful for here in buffalo, the DJ stated the cure
is slated for an October 31st release of their newest work."

    (Thanks Erick)

  • Perry has broken his silence about the split and talked to Chris @ PerryBamonte.de. Here's an excerpt:

  • PB.DE: Artistically seen, were you happy with the direction the band took in the last two years of your membership? Obviously there were tensions in the band around the recording of the last album.

Perry: I have to say that I always preferred to see the positive side, and I sincerely believed that The Cure still had the potential to put out a really great album, but it was often hard to sustain that belief.

    PB.DE: Why?

Perry: Usually because of choices made concerning what the band should do, what songs should be released, the way the band was being marketed, etc. It often felt like these decisions belied a lack of confidence and led to compromise.

  • Robert on the next Earl Slick album?

  • From The Toronto Star

"In addition to mixing forthcoming CDs by Newfoundland singer Damhnait Doyle and Edmonton band AA Soundsystem, Michel is fiddling with a solo effort by long-time Bowie guitarist Earl Slick.

"He's had Bowie and (the Cure's) Robert Smith guest sing on it," Michel says. "He wants me to sing a tune on it, too. But he's not happy with the tracks, so he's asked to me fix them up. I've been tearing apart these mixes. I've got 10 tracks of Bowie stuff. It's a blast."

    (Thanks Tempest)

  • The 'Lost in the Labyrinth' dvd is an even bigger scam than originally thought:

  • "I thought it was important to tell you that The Cure "Lost In the Labyrinth" bootleg DVD is an exact copy of The Cure DVD bootleg "Out of the Woods"; it has a different title and DVD artwork but, otherwise, is a duplicate. Some Cure fans are about to pay twice for the exact same product."

    (Thanks Snap)

  • More great Cure videos on YouTube:

    (Thanks Lars)

"Germany's currently most successfull band Wir sind Helden played a very upbeat cover of "Why can't I be you?" yesterday at the sold out Southside Festival in Neuhausen/South Germany. A great version thanks to the sexy voice of Julia Holofernes and a 3 piece horn section. Nice to
see 30.000 teenages jumping around and singing along to a Cure song this summer."

    (Thanks Ingmar)

  • Update on the "After The Rain...The Cure" book:

We're still looking for help in publishing Italian, Spanish and Portuguese versions. Could you post this request?"

E-mail David if you can help.

  • Curespotting:

  • "On my way in to work this morning, the dj was going through a list published by Guitar One on the top 10 songs to play to your significant other if you want to "get some."  While Led Zeppelin, Goo-Goo Dolls, and Extreme were a few that made the list, The Cure's Just Like Heaven came in at #4.  I thought this was pretty funny, and figured many fans alike would find this rather amusing as well......not to mention Robert and the guys!"

    (Thanks Jen)

"June 22, 2006 at 11:25pm EDT, during "The Daily Show" on comedy central there was an ad on for the JetBlue website which made some not too flattering reference to Robert Smith- and posted a reworked photo of him with his eyes blurred out."

    (Thanks Laura)

    From the Washington Post

"In October 2004, the Scottish-born Tunstall was touring England, playing keyboards in the punk-folk band Half Cousin when she got a call from the popular BBC live music television show "Later . . . With Jools Holland." Could Tunstall, who had been working on her first album, possibly fill in on 24 hours' notice for the American rapper Nas, who had to cancel at the last minute?

And, just so she would know, the other performers that night would be Anita Baker, Jackson Browne, Embrace, the Futureheads -- and the Cure.

"So I got off the tour bus, went back to London, jumped in the shower," Tunstall recalled recently from her home in St. Andrews, Scotland. "And suddenly I'm in the studio, watching Robert Smith, going, 'What a [expletive] god' . . . and I'm next!"

    (Thanks Tempest)

"A little curespotting: sunday 25 June, french tv channel France 2 played an episode from the series 'Cold Case' ('Aaires Classées' in french, episode titled 'la reine déchue' ('the fallen queen'?)).  During this episode, they played a long part of 'just like heaven', and, a while later, an extract from 'pictures of you'.  Two extracts in one episode!  It was great."

    (Thanks FabienG)

"About 15 seconds of the musical intro to Pictures of You was used during one of the Katie Couric retrospect on her last day of the Today Show on May 31. Not much of a spotting, but once again somebody at NBC shows some good musical tastes. :) "

    (Thanks Cheryl)

"Bits of 'Burn' are being using in a trailer for Smallville on either E4 or More4 here in the UK."

    (Thanks James)

"Here is just a little curespotting, dating back from November 2005.  in the british magazine Bliss there is a 4 pages article about fearne Cotton (which  seems to be an interviewer in the UK), and she is photographed lying on her bed surrounded by plenty of records among which the 12" of
    'the lovecats'."

    (Thanks Fabien G)
