  • More rumors of The Cure playing Imola, Italy:
  • "I've just read this on the official website of Italian band 'delta v' "the band 'delta v' will perform at the heineken festival (imola, italy) on Saturday 19th, June..the line-up will include among others THE CURE, pj harvey and the pixies."

    (Thanks Marcello)

  • New interview with Jason:
  • "Here's an interview i conducted with jason cooper, it covers current recording, tour memories and the trilogy tour http://www.simongallup.com"

    (Thanks Craig)

  • 'Untitled' used in film:
  • "I saw a film at the London gay and lesbian film festival yesterday called “Sing Me an Angel” (I think it’s a 16mm student film made in Israel in 2002) and there’s a scene when the protagonist goes into a shop and the shopkeeper is quietly singing a song and playing his guitar. The song is “untitled” from disintegration. The Cure are credited in the end titles. The film also opens with a quote from a Smiths song – but I forgot what it was!!

  • Ok, that Siouxsie & Robert clip is up on the Audio/Video page. Seems like many of you (especially French fans) have seen it and were able to help identify exactly what it is:
  • "In November 1982, Siouxsie & the Banshees released the Melt! Single off the Kiss in the Dreamhouse album. The B-side for that single was a French Christmas song called "Il est né le divin enfant". On December 12, 1982, the band (including Robert) went on French TV (Antenne 2) on a show called "Embûches de Noël" and performed that song (well actually they just pretended). Most of them being severly drunk, the end result is, well, interesting!

A one-minute clip of that song was rerun in 1988 in "Les enfants du rock" show on the same channel and although I don't have the original 1982 video, I recently made a DivX of the 1988 rerun."

So thanks to Olivier we now have a 60 second color clip along with a 90 second black & white clip.

(Thanks to Olivier and everyone else who wrote in to help)

  • A new clip from the 1980 Boston show is up:
  • "NEW clip "Fire in Cairo" from The Cure’s first US tour (1980) and their stop in Boston at the Underground Club. http://www.nmdp.net/movies/moviepages/theCure.html

"Fire in Cairo" best viewed with windows XP and the latest windows media player 9. Older Mac users download the mpeg plugin for your QuickTime player.

Enjoy and check back every once and a while. "

    (Thanks JCrocker)

  • I hope to have a pretty strange clip up soon. It's a video of Siouxsie, Severin, Budgie and Robert doing a Christmas song, with Robert on cymbals. I had never even heard of this before, and I'm betting that most of you have never seen it. Anyay, I hope to have it up later tonight or tomorrow.

  • Kevin Smith talks to IGN about the songs he used in 'Jersey Girl'. Here's the Cure bit:
  • "Case in point, Smith's use of The Cure's "High" during a school sequence. "I was a huge Cure fan. Still am, to a large degree," states Smith. "And that's like one of their lighter songs. Most of their stuff is kind of funeral dirgy, which is fun if you like kind of sad music, which I do, but generally The Cure stuff is kind of sad. That's one of their lighter songs and I always kind of dug that song, plus it just seemed to fit well in that sequence. That was the sequence people were always trying to get me to cut down, too. They were like 'Just get 'em to the school quickly!' And I was like 'No, I gotta use that song, dude. I gotta use as much of that song as possible.'"

    (Thanks John)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Just thought I'd let you know the Cure is given "honorable mention" kudos by MSNBC in their 10 Greatest Rock Bands story. They're listed in a sidebar towards the bottom of the story.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4595384/"

    (Thanks Lance)

"1) in an italian magazine ("Sette"), there's an ad for the Italian Association Pro Vegetarianism (OIPA) where they list a few names of famous vegetarians. Among Martin Luther King, Wagner, Gandhi, Einstein,Voltaire, Tolstoj, Plato, Rousseau, there's also our Robert (there are also Stipe and Morrissey, indeed)

Note: Again, unless there has been a recent change, Robert is not a vegetarian. He was for awhile, then he wasn't, then he might have been again, but then he said he wasn't. If it changes again, I'm sure someone will let us all know. : )

    2) in the tv programme "porta a porta" (literally, door to door), which is an insight on the major political and cultural present situations, "want" was used in the background in a clip about politics."

    (Thanks Pietro)

"just a few things I've seen/heard during the past two weeks in France:

    - on tv channel Arte, Tracks program, they had a brief report on Blink 182 and obviously there was a brief mention of Robert Smith.

    - radio station Rires et Chansons (argh!) uses close to me (closest mix) as jingle.

    - on France 2 tv program Tout Le Monde En Parle, they always do a blind test game with the guests at the end, and the dj Bob Sinclar played just like heaven; it took the guest 5-10 seconds to recognize it, and 'surprisingly' she was one girl from the french girl's band variety/Britney Spears like, L5.

    - and I don't really exactly remember this one, but I think that Pascal Obispo (french variety singer) said he liked and listened to The Cure."

    (Thanks Fabien G and Barbara)

  • As mentioned before, 'High' is featured in the new movie Jersey Girl:
  • "I went and saw the movie "Jersey Girl" tonight with a friend....the new romantic comedy by director Kevin Smith (who directed movies such as Clerks, Chasing Amy, Mall Rats, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back). About 90% into the movie, the song "high" was played in both the background, and some in the foreground, in a montage-like segment. Instead of just a small 15-30 second snippet like how most songs are played in movies...most of "high" was actually played. Now I just wonder if Kevin Smith had anything to do with the chosing of that song."

    (Thanks Jared)

"Just saw the new Kevin Smith film Jersey Girl last night, mainly because I read (on COF) that High was in the film & it is after all Kevin Smith. But I must say that (in my opinion) the film was GREAT!!! I'd say that about 90% of High was featured in the film during the climatic self realization scene of Ben's character ~ I actually felt like I was at a Cure show or something, the song fit perfectly with the scene!!!!!!"

    (Thanks Joey)

  • Can anyone help Michael with this?
  • "I was wondering if I could get a front/back and spine scan of In Orange and Show vhs. I transfered mine to dvd+r and then got rid of the vhs tapes and (duh) forgot to get a scan for my dvd cases. "

  • Does anyone remember 'Plainsong' being used in a movie? Possibly with John Cusack?
  • Update: " "Midsummer", released in 1999, contains "Plainsong". Interesting to note some of the other songs: "It's No Good & "Uselink", Maritn Gore, also "A Forest", The Cure. Why do I not remember hearing about this? What is a "uselink"? :-)

I have answered one of my own questions. I did not hear about this because it is a somewhat obscure cast. I don't even recognize some of the film festivals it played at. http://www.geocities.com/midsummerfilm/accolade.html "

    (Thanks Ryan)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Just seen a TV advert for the latest Q Special Edition - "50 YEARS OF ROCK'N'ROLL - PART 3" and a picture of The Cure (Head On The Door era) was shown. Not sure in what context The Cure are covered in this magazine, but I'm assuming they must be featured so it could be worth a look at.

The magazine featuring The Cure is the first magazine listed at this link ("From U2 to The White Stripes") but it doesn't actually list The Cure here, so the article may not be that big (despite it warranting a band photo on the TV ad?). "

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

"A gentleman sent in a letter to RS in response to a letter regarding gay marriage. The kicker?

"Every issue, the author of the letter we like best wins a useful gift. Now that Tim needs something to occupy his time, we are sending him a Schecter Diamond Series Omen-6 electric guitar, autographed by The Cure."

Wot!!! Someone at RS got a clue! I immediately knew what it was!

What a way to wrap up the week."

    (Thanks Jen)

  • Cure cover:
  • While looking for a Church interview today on Live 105.3, I found a terrible cover of 'Just Like Heaven' by Taking Back Sunday (It's here, under the Listen section). Listen if you dare. : )

  • Curespotting:
  • "From the April, 2004 Blender Magazine (in an article about David Bowie): U2 and the Cure are among the bands who have covered the song ["Young Americans"]. "The Cure don't often do cover versions, lead singer Robert Smith has said, "but we did "Young Americans" because David Bowie has written some great songs, and that's one of my favorites."

Also in the issue is a review of Just Jack's "the Outer Marker" that features the "Lullaby" sample as well as "Join the Dots" getting the excellent "Blender Approved" stamp."

    (Thanks Rust)

"I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but but our brand new radio station in LA, Indie Radio 103.1 has been playing a ton of cure tracks you don't normally hear on the radio. So far I've heard Give me It, Birdmad Girl, Sinking (twice), The Blood, Shake Dog Shake, Bananafishbones, and a lot of other surprising songs. They play a lot of other good alternative stuff from the 80s that you never hear anymore. For those in the Socal area it's worth checking out."

    (Thanks Dean)

  • Curespotting:
  • "While surfing the net I've found an interesting picture. Limp Bizkit's lead singer Fred Durst wore a Robert Smith t-shirt at a live show on March 22 in Budapest, Hungary. Take a look at it: http://index.hu/cikkepek/0403/kult/limpbizkit//.gdata/gp_05.jpg"

    (Thanks G****)

"Sky Movies are running an extended trailer in the UK for the forthcoming premier of Eight-Legged Freaks (a silly but fun film about massive spiders and such terrorising a small US town - i think David Arquette 'stars'). Lullaby (without vocals) is playing throughout, and there is the into to The Caterpillar at the end."

    (Thanks Richard)

"Bought the Levinhurst CD (must have been really bored) and noticed a credit to Robert and Simon…??? Not worth the $12, though"

    (Thanks Chris)

"One I don't remember seeing, but in Rolling Stones' '500 Greatest Albums of All Time' The Cure gets not two, but three nods. The third is in the XM ad booklet, pgs 6-7 of the booklet. The Cure is the first band listed on the screen of the XM stereo. Now hearing them on XM, thats something I've so far missed...."

  • Voix du Gaou tickets on sale:
  • "Tickets for the'Voix du Gaou' festival are now available at fnac.com for 38,50 €. You will notice that it is mentionned 'The Cure + Guests'. I know very well the place. It is very typical of the French 'Côte d'Azur'. It is a small island called 'Ile du Gaou', which is located just in front of the Embiez Island. You access the Island through a small bridge of wood. The place is really beautiful!"

(Thanks Frederic, Cherry Tree Girl, Fabs)

  • Cure covers:
  • "I am writing to tell you about a band I just saw play in the Philadelphia area, Five Star Dive.

Being an avid Cure fan myself, and seeing a lot of bands who attempt to cover the music by The Cure, this band ( Although they are an original band) did an amazing version of "Same Deep Water As You" where the lead singer first announced that the next song is dedicated to the bartender who's friend just passed away in a motorcycle accident and then went into a fast paced Same Deep Water As You WHAT made the song really cool is the singer sang different verses from "The Catch" and "Disintegration" with-in sdway, it was such a powerful version and interesting, I Just wanted to let you know that there is a band that you should check out and find what I did a unique band with talent and appreciation for what music is, all roads leading to The Cure..."

    (Thanks Bridget)

"In the issue of March of the free mag Spike 40, there is a little article about about the Spanish band Fang´s new album entitled "Dos Vidas", and it says:

Among the 10 tracks there is a cover of the The Cure´s Close to Me; "we grew up with them, those sounds are the motor of our projects". "

(Thanks to Sharon from Charlotte Sometimes)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Maybe a bit out of date (1996), but interesting anyway, I think...http://guitargeek.com/rigview/149/"

    (Thanks jd)

"Just read the curespotting from the MST3K show "The Crawling Hand". There are actually quite a lot of Cure references in MST3K. During the title sequence in "Invasion USA", the writers name scrolls by. It is Robert Smith (This movie was made in the '50s). Mike and the 'Bots respond by saying something to the effect of "the lead singer of the Cure is also a writer". In the first Sci-Fi channel episode, "The Revenge of the Creature" Mike comments about a german shepherd the lead actress has. The dog had a black muzzle. Mike said "Look at all that black lipstick. The dog must be a Cure fan.". In the episode "The Space Children" there is a scene with the family driving down a beach and one of the Bots (Tom, i think), sings the beginning of "Standing on a Beach" with some slightly different lyrics. It was something like "Driving on a beach with my kids in the car". I'm sure there are more, but these are all the ones I've run across so far. I think somebody at Best Brains is a Cure fan"

    (Thanks Darqueelfe)

"From an article appearing in the Pensacola News-Journal on 21 March 2004 titled "Vintage T-shirts Make a Comeback"

"...and an old Cure T-shirt sold for $40. Shirts from that tour are particularly hot sellers says Lindsay Pauly, business manager for New York City-based pop culture collectibles expert Tiffany Dubin. One recently sold on eBay for $180 and the bidding for an extra-large baseball-style shirt from that tour recently reached $79 before the bidding ended."

No specific tour was mentioned; anyone know which tour the article refers to?"

    (Thanks Bevon)

"A few days ago in the TV during the program Big Brother in the presentation of a tenant played HALO in the background sound (EXCELLENT SONG, awful show, in the MTV's show about urban myths they interviewed someone who was wearing a BLOODFLOWERS cover t-shirt and on the mexican cable-videochannel Telehit in the program Resistencia played JUST LIKE HEAVEN on a documentary about the Tianguis del Chopo (open-air market where all the "urban tribes" join together every saturday)."

    (Thanks Jorge)

    "from pitchforkmedia.com

From a review of the new Guns N' Roses 'Greatest Hits' cd:

Today, pop metal serves as bacchanalia, irony, and imaginary nostalgia. MTV sells the 80s as a kitschy, decadent daydream, dodging their complicity in creating the pop culture divide that made Britny Fox possible. By the time of Guns N' Roses, thanks in large part to the network's conservatism, there was a cultural civil war going on, and those who threw down pop metal's chalice had to dress the part to find each other in the crowd. And I'm not saying our lives were harder-- we didn't walk two miles in the snow to buy Cure records-- but pop culture was stuck in a 1970s frame of mind. Everything had to be so much more obvious to be understood-- including alternative music-- which is why it all looks like a dayglo renaissance faire in retrospect, but prior to the information age, you couldn't chart your own roadmap. You needed big, flashing signs pointing the way."

    (Thanks Michael)

    March 22nd

  • So it looks like the Werchter rumor WAS true after all. They just added another day to fit The Cure's schedule:
  • "The Cure is now finally confirmed for the famous Belgian Rock Werchter festival where they will play for the 5th time! They will perform there on 1 July alongside amongst others Pink and Basement Jaxx. More bands to be announced soon. See www.rockwerchter.be. "

    (Thanks Peter)

"the organiser of the Rock Werchter Festival made the anouncement officially that The Cure will play on thursday the 1st July. He said he had a luxuas problem with so many good bands and he said it it always good to have The Cure. "

    (Thanks Stephan)

Update: Now confirmed at the official site.

  • Cure in Manchester at the Move Festival?
  • "Just saw this at Morrissey-solo.com:

"Right I've got this direct from the promoter.... This years Move festival to be held at Old Trafford Cricket Ground, Manchester will include: Madness headlining the Thursday, The Cure Friday, Stereophonics the Saturday and will be rounded off on the Sunday by Morrissey. Not a stones throw from his old house. This is subject to licence, and judging by the last couple of years is in no way confirmed despite the acts themselves committing. Again expect a battle from the local residents to magistrates but after last years vehement protests and the subsequent good behaviour of the punters a licence for the four day event is as good as assured. Another interesting aspect is that promoters are trying to get Brett Anderson & Bernard Butler back together. The concerts are pencilled in for the weekend beginning 8th July. "

    (Thanks Steven)

  • Another review of the Tweaker album:
  • "Just came across a Tweaker "2 a.m wake up call" Review by: The meat head perspective on the NIN hotline. I'm not too fond of it though..but hey it's a cure spotting!

"I'm probably asking to get Punched In The Face by saying this, but I was never much of a fan of The Cure. I don't actively make it a point to hate them, but I just don't care about them. However, if the Cure sounded like the totally un-Cure-like "Truth Is" (featuring Robert Smith), I'd probably own most or all of their records. This is a really fun track with slow, fat-sounding synths and a rockin' chorus. Great music to drink to. 5 stars."

    http://www.theninhotline.net/meatpers/current.html "

Hahahaha...if The Cure sounded like this, I wouldn't own ANY of their albums. A horrible track! Oh many of you will love it, but that just proves you have terrible taste in music. : )

    (Thanks Nothing)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Whilst watching a Mystery Science Theater: 3000 episode on tape the other night (if anyone cares, it was 'The Crawling Hand') there was the following:

An astronaut having a serious problem while returning from space is on a viewscreen. His hair is madly askew, his eyes have huge dark circles, and his mouth is black (looking a lot like Robert in the Lullaby video!) No sooner did I think this than Joel and the 'Bots had the following dialogue:

    Crow: It's Tammy Faye Baker!

Joel: He looks more like Robert Smith of The Cure.

Tom Servo: Looks like this guy NEEDS The Cure.

    Don't we all?

Another reference to The Cure in MST3K:

In the Laserblast episode, Mike comments, upon seeing the protagonist, 'Robert Smith is having a GOOD hair day!' "

    (Thanks Rayvn)

  • Ange sends thanks to everyone at the Curedrink:
  • "I want to say a MASSIVE thanks for all who attended the London Curedrink party on saturday night at The Verge in London, the evening a complete success and SELL OUT!!!

What a way to celebrate my 3oth birthday - The awesome 'Predominant Lunatics' kicked off the evening with their cure-esque sound, there were many lucky winners of the signed cure items and 'Easy Cure' performed a 2 1/2 hour set way beyond my expectations!!! If only The Cure would bring 'one more time' back into their setlist, Luca your voice was amazing!!!! Followed by 2 hours of drunken partying and debauchery - why do I always leave Cure parties with a limp!???

THANKYOU for everybody's cards, gifts, drinks and well wishes and to share my occasion with all my favourite Cure buddies made for a memorable 10 hour party! Lots of the attendees made l-o-n-g train journeys and flights for this event and I hope you thought it was worth the trek?

Thanks for the 'Cure' birthday cake too, all I have to do now is to decide which cure members head to eat first???!!!!"

    (Thanks Ange)

    March 21st

  • The Cure continue to dominate in Y100's Modern Rock Madness tournament:
  • "the cure just went up against janes addiction. the songs went like this:

the cure - pictures of you

janes addiction - been caught stealing

    the cure - fascination street

    janes addiction - just because

And of course the cure won!!!!!!!!! They will be going up against weezer today around 5 PM. they got this far. let's not let them down now!"

    (Thanks Asa)

"So The Cure defeated Janes Addiction on Philadelphia's Y100 Modern Rock Madness today. (I think Janes Addiction would have wanted it that way.) Anyway, they're down to the top 8. The "DJ" seemed actually excited by the win. "It's an upset" and all of that, saying he was surprised with Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro's wedding to TV he was surprised Jane's Addiction didn't win. He also attributed the Cure's "revival" to 311's cover of Lovesong. They're up against Weezer at 5 today. Here's hoping they smoke Weezer with their own hash pipe."

    (Thanks Andrew)

Update: "the cure just went up against weezer. the songs went like this:

the cure - why cant i be you

    weezer - sweater song

    the cure - inbewteen days

    weezer - dope nose

the cure lost to weezer. but at least that got that far."

    (Thanks Asa)

"Well The Cure finally lost, to Weezer. At least they made the top 8. The DJ said it was a Hurculean feat worthy of defeating Mecha-Streisand on South Park all those years ago."

    (Thnaks Andrew)

  • The old Swing Tour and 1998 Euro festivals photos have been restored.

  • Chart update:
  • "Join the Dots is at # 44 on its sixth week of appearance on the Greek charts."

    (Thanks Vagelis)

  • Curespotting:
  • "From Rolling Stone, April 2004 (under the heading "Modern Trivia"): Cure singer Robert Smith stains his lips with Jane Cosmetics' #3 Reddest, but Joni Mitchell prefers Estee Lauder's Silent Red. "

    (Thanks Rust)

    March 20th

  • I've finally (after what, 3 years?) restored the Cure Comic Book and Dream Tour Book images that were lost when the Xoom server went under. And I'll be adding more of the lost files over the next few days, including the Swing & Dream Tour photos that have been missing.
  • Update: The missing Dream Tour photos are up now. Still have to fix the links from the Dream Tour pages though.

  • FNAC now has the Festival Les Voix du Gaou listed, with tickets priced at 36,55 €. No word on when they will go on sale though.
  • (Thanks Yan)

  • Billboard has a story about the Festival announcements:
  • The Cure has confirmed several summer European festival dates via its official Web site.

The group will appear June 26 at the Hurricane Festival in Shessel, Germany, and the following day at the Southside Festival in Neuhausen Ob Eck, Germany. French performances are scheduled for July 3 at the Six Fours Festival in Les Voix de Gou and July 4 at the Aix Les Bains Festival in Nuisilac.

The group, which last visited North America during its 2000 "Dream Tour" in support of its final Fiction/Elektra studio album, "Bloodflowers," will headline the Coachella Festival in Indio, Calif., on May 2.

    -- Jason MacNeil, Toronto

Ok, it's one thing to get the French festival info wrong, but how do you overlook Inland Invasion 3 last year?

  • And CNN has it too:
  • "Just flipping through the channels when the Cure are mentioned on the ticker on (CNN) HeadLine News which says "Rockers The Cure to play European festival dates in June; will visit the US in May"."

    (Thanks Mike)

  • Mark Sutherland offers up his opinion on "How To Buy...The Cure":
  • "This is a little feature from Liz Kershaw's show. Great until the end where they spoil it by saying Bloodflowers is the Cure's only truly bad album...http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/music/howtobuy.shtml"

    (Thanks Chris)

  • The Cure are doing well in the Y100 Modern Rock Madness tournament:
  • "Today my local radio station (Philadelphia Y100) had one of those band matches. They put Metallica up against The Cure. The songs went like this:

    Metallica - Enter Sandman

The Cure - Just Like Heaven

    Metallica - The Unforgiven

The Cure - Boys don't Cry

The Cure won of course. Mostly everyone who called in voted for The Cure. The Cure will be going up against Incubus tonight at 9:30. I'll try and catch it to see who wins that match."

Update: "The Cure just went up again Incubus. The songs went like this:

The Cure - Friday I'm in Love

    Incubus - Pardon Me

The Cure - Close to Me

Incubus - Wish You were Here

The Cure kicked ass and won again! They will be going up against Janes Addiction tommorow at 2:30 PM!"

    (Thanks Asa)

  • 'A Forest' is the 3rd best song of the 80's in Belgium:
  • "The audience of radio Donna (still the biggest radio station in Belgium) voted last week for the 'eighties top 100'. 'A forest' is on number 3, sandwiched between U2 ('with or without you' on 2 and 'sunday bloody sunday' on 4)."

    (Thanks Wout)

  • Curespotting:
  • " 'in your house' was played pre-show at 'the mars volta/a perfect circle' show in slc, ut. thursday night. apc's latest album really does have a heavy dose of 'cure' influence. Great show btw. Check them out. Even Mars Volta (the) blew me away. Amazing live show."

    (Thanks Dave)

"Henry Rollins mentions The Cure on his new spoken word DVD, "Live At Luna Park". It's in the bonus feature "Henry VS Iggy Pop". Somewhat disparaging but absolutely hilarious!"

  • Can anyone help Luke with this?
  • "I can't seem to get through to any distributors emails that sell Aria Guitars. I am trying to find information on how to purchase the BB1000 or BB500 Baritone 6 String Bass. Thank you for any information you may be able to provide."

Update: "As far as I’m aware, the Aria baritones have ceased production. (probably read that on your site to be honest). If that is the case, no distributor would be able to acquire one, they would certainly have to be a special order if they were in production. If any guitar retailers have any in the store rooms – that’s a possibility – but highly unlikely considering the specialist nature of the instrument.

If you’re (Luke) strictly after a baritone – obviously the new Hellcat VI is a good starting point – or Musicman & Danelectro produce baritones as well.

If it really is just the Aria you’re after, seriously your best bet is gbase.com or eBay – but that’s a really bad odds bet.

(I did find this with a quick search on google but neither know the company, nor the date of that advertisement http://rhythmcity.net/store/index.cgi?code=3&cat=40).

  • Interesting news out of NYC last night. Seems like one of the opening bands have signed on for the US Cure Tour. Who is it? All I can say for right now is that they were in the Top 10 of the recent poll. Anyway, I'd like to thank the person who sent in that bit of info. It proves once again that "New York cares".
  • Was that a big enough hint for you? ; )

There is a Christian band called Amberlin that has remade "Lovesong". Its basically the same as the original but with a faster beat. Air1.com has a :25 second clip where you can hear a bit of it. You have to look in the "Weekend Countdown" box, then click "complete chart" and you can find it there and listen. "

  • "There's a music TV channel in New Zealand called C4 and they have a "Flashback" show in the evenings featuring 80's videos and the like. The Cure get a fair bit of airtime but the main point of interest is that the sparse studio set features only 2 items, a chair for the presenter and a giant picture of Robert Smith (circa mid to late 80's) which takes up most of the floor area - obviously to represent that entire musical era."

"i was just watching a show called Best Week Ever on VH1. It's where they do like a revalation on the past week. They were doing this segment that has "upgrades" and "downgrades" and this week they were doing it on song covers. They did a segment on 311's cover of Lovesong, which i personally dont like, and they talked a little about the cure and showd a clip of the original and cover version Lovesong videos. I thought it was pretty cool. And they listed it as a downgrade, which made me pretty happy. "

Also, the book is going to reflect this time in the Cure's career. If all goes well, it will be published and given to Robert Smith and the rest of the band. "Soundcontrol, "The UK's Number One Musical Instrument Retailer" have a free monthly magazine (available by registering at www.soundcontrol.co.uk, click "Free Magazine", menu on the left). Just received this month's copy in the post today and in a feature on the Winter NAMM Expo (Anaheim, USA) there was mention of the Schecter Hellcat IV, although the article also refers to it as the VI - not sure which is correct? (It's the Hellcat VI) No expected price or issue date is stated. Anyway, here is the article, complete with confusing name references:

Schecter Hell Cat IV Designed by Schecter's Michael Ciravolo and Marc LaCorte, the pair cites the Cure's Perry Bamonte and Robert Smith with invaluable input on the new Hellcat IV. Not a guitar, bass or even a baritone in today's terms, the Hellcat VI is designed to be an improvement of the '6-string bass' instrument of the early 1960's. Standard features include a countoured alder body, rock maple bolt-on neck, 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, and Grover tuners. Schecter Guitar also plans to make packaged Hellcat VI string sets available in the near future."

In case you missed it before, you can read the press release here and also check the Schecter website for more info.

  • New 'Dots' review from Zero Hora:
  • "A very well written article and a positive review about Join the Dots was published today by the Brazilian newspaper ZERO HORA. Nothing really new to translate, but the first line gives the tone of the article:

" They are 27 years old, have changed the line up several times, its vocalist looks just like the 80's, but nothing in pop music today is so hot as The Cure"

    The Cure entrega os pontos

Caixa "Join the Dots" reúne lados B de compactos da banda inglesa

    ROGER LERINA

    O caminho

Robert Smith compôs para a versão cinematográfica de Arquivo X (1998) a música More than This.

Para For the Masses, disco gravado em tributo ao também oitentista grupo Depeche Mode, o Cure regravou World in my Eyes.

  • For those of you who don't check the front page, 4 clips from the Barfly show are up on the Audio/Video page. And don't worry, all of the other files are still there, I just removed the links. They;ll be back soon.

  • The Werchter rumor seems to be false. With the announcement of the 2 French festivals yesterday, that only leaves July 2nd for The Cure to play Werchter, and Metallica are headlining that day.
  • Update: Conflicting info on who's headlining when. We'll just have to wait until The Cure updates about this one.

    (Thanks Stephan)

  • And speaking of those French festivals, here's some info about them:
  • "As you'll see on this site, the capacity of the first one is only 5,000 people. It's a shiny and nice region, but of course with thousands of tourists at that time of summer. So we'll got to rush into stores to have a chance to get a ticket ! http://www.mairie-six-fours.fr/sitegaou/pres.htm

The second one is maybe a new festival because I didn't find info on the internet. It's also a very nice and touristic region, surronded by big cities like Genève, Lyon, Grenoble, Annecy, Chamonix and some others are very close too like Saint-Etienne or Valence. So : same conclusion !!"

    (Thanks David)

  • More info on SFB vs. The Cure:
  • "Here a some words from the suppliers to PerfectBeat.com regarding In Between Dazed. I wasn't aware that The Cure were an Indie band when the original In Between Days was released! Maybe they need to get their research sorted out.

"The following information was provided to us by our supplier and is not necessarily the opinion of Perfect Beat. The Industries current favorite remixers are back and this time they have teamed up with Fat Bob and his team to bring you a huge remix of this Indie classic! Using the full vocals from this goth classic and adding a huge bassline and clever 4/4 drum pattern turns this into a dancefloor filling hands in the air classic that you already know all the words to! Now not only do you sing it but you can jump in the air! Watch for Azuli unveiling signing these guys at Miami WMC 2004 Its a biggie!!!!"

Also, I have managed to track down a sound clip on the Cisco Records, Japan website. It's a 1min 13sec clip and Real Player is required (40kbps stream). Here's the link

  • 'Dots' chart update:
  • "Just wanted to add that Join the dots, for its 3rd week in the french chart, fell to spot # 131 in the 14/2 week (previous spots: 29, 79) and then fell off the top 150"

  • Just Jack cd released in the US:
  • "Just Jack's 13 track cd, "the Outer Maker" was released in the US on Tuesday, March 9th. It includes three versions of "Snowflakes": the original track, "Snowflakes (Dan the Automator Mix)" and "Snowflakes (Cured by Temple of Jay Mix)" - which combines the original lyrics of "Snowflakes" to the music of "Lullaby" by the Cure."

  • Curespotting:
  • "I was lucky enough to be selected as a screening audience for the new movie "Jersey Girl." "High" off of Wish is completely played during a great part of the movie. The movie is great I highly recommend it."

"In the March issue of Mtv magazine there is a pic of the Cure (Porl, Boris, Robert, Simon & Lol) on page 32. Underneath the pic there is a brief "history" of the band. "Famous for: Hairspray, smeared lipstick, sadness; Currently responsible for: Manhattan's Lower East Side, men wearing black nailpolish, love on Fridays; Current activities: Three years after their supposed final album, the morose "Bloodflowers," Robert Smith and Co. have wisely sniffed out the cultural mood and reformed. A new album - recorded with Limp Bizkit producer Ross Robinson - is due this year; See also: the Rapture, the Faint, the sensitive girl in the back of English class wearing all black."

Looks like Eric Olsen also writes for MTV. : )

  • According to the Alias Production website, we now know two of this summer's festival dates:
  • 3 juillet SIX FOURS Festival Les Voix du Gaou

4 juillet AIX LES BAINS Festival Nuisilac

That would also mean that if the Werchter rumor is true (probably not though), they would have to play there on July 2nd.

  • The first batch of remastered CDs (3IB, SS, Faith, Pornography) have been pushed back to May 25th...and possibly even later than that.

  • Chrome Dreams have added a Cure page for their Maximum Cure cd release.

  • Here's something new, SFB vs. The Cure:
  • "I was looking at the HMV UK website to see if I could find anything on the remasters yet. Sadly couldn't find anything on that front, but in The Cure section I did come across something I haven't heard anything about so far. Sfb Vs Cure

    In Between Dazed

Availability: usually ships within 3 weeks

    Release date: 26-2-2004

    Number of Discs: 1

    Catalogue Number: SFBREMIX005

    Label: WHITELABEL

I'm assuming that this is unofficial, especially being a white label, making HMV's selling of it quite curious (being a large chain). Anyone know anything about this?"

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

"Of interest? [see message board frame -- bottom left of John Peel's home page on BBC Radio 1]

  • '80s bands poised for another 'New Wave'

"Modern rock legends the Cure, though only broken up for the last few years, have a new collection out, "Join the Dots: B-sides and Rarities, 1978-2001", and a three-record deal for new material with Artist Direct Records."

  • From Billboard:

Lollapalooza Eyes Blend Of Success, Credibility

Geiger would not comment on specific bands rumored to be appearing on the Perry Farrell-reared event this summer, such as the Pixies, the Cure, Nine Inch Nails or Sonic Youth, the latter of whom is said to be very close to joining the bill.

SET TO HEADLINE ONE OF WORLDS BIGGEST FESTIVALS IN MAY!!!

The Cure are the great survivors of alternative music. For more than a quarter of a century they have presented the bizarre perspectives and nightmare mental landscapes of Robert Smith to a devoted following around the globe. Maximum Cure traces the band's turbulent history, from teenage jam sessions, via a bizarre talent contest, to successive incarnations as punks, Goths, MTV darlings and the elder statesmen of misery.

    · The Cure has just released a box set of B-sides and rarities.

    · Their new Ross Robinson-produced studio album is to be released in May.

    · Robert Smith collaborated with Blink 182 and singing vocals for 'All Of This' on their new album.

    · The Cure are headlining the Coachella Festival in May and are already booked for many summer festivals.

Now for the first time 'Maximum Cure' tells the story of the band, how they broke America, and how they've managed to keep producing innovative music even though it's their third decade in the business. From Punk to Pop to Goth, every hip band name-checks The Cure, making this CD a must for any fan's collection!

And you can pre-order it at Amazon UK.

    (Thanks Ian)

  • "I posted this story to our website (www.947zone.com) yesterday and thought it was funny...

Linkin Park singer talks Projekt Revolution line-up

As Linkin Park wraps up their wildly successful Meteora tour tomorrow night in Atlanta, Georgia, the band is already looking forward to this summer's edition of Projekt Revolution. Vocalist Chester Bennington said he managed to get most of his dream lineup on the bill. "I kinda sat down and I took one of our daily itineraries, and turned it over, took a hotel pen, and said, 'Tour.' And I wrote, 'The Cure, Linkin Park, koRn, Snoop Dogg,' and a number of other bands. Unfortunately, we couldn't convince the Cure to headline the show, but we got about a quarter of a notch below that on the totem pole, which is, you know, us and Korn and Snoop."

Projekt Revolution kicks off on 07.23 and will end on 09.06. Exact dates and cities will be announced shortly, along with more acts. The latest single from Linkin Park's Meteora album is called "Lying From You."

    (Thanks Keith)

"A strange one: just saw an interview of Fred Durst in the news on german television (britneyblabla) and he wore a cure-t-shirt (hmpf?). Also I went to the "pink"-show in Berlin with my girlfriend, in a video-piece they played "adagio for strings". Very interesting, isn`t it?"

"There is an add for "Nature's Cure," a clear-skin product in the April issue of the video game magazine, GMR. There's a photo of an attractive couple in beach attire and the text above reads, "David and Amy / Saturday night 10:15 / Beach Bonfire." Really random! I can only assume that the copy writer wasn't inspired by clear-skin treatment products."

  • First Barfly review is up now. And some news from Robert at last night's show:
  • "Instead of walking off the stage after the main set, rather surprisingly the band stayed on. Robert said something along the lines of "usually we'd walk off then come back on but I will take this opportunity to answer 3 questions, anyone got any questions they'd like to ask?"

My main Cure buddy Nige asked if they were playing Glastonbury to which Robert answered "no because the organisers dont think The Cure have ever played a good set at Glastonbonbury!" obviously some kind of fall out there, enough said!

Then someone asked when the new album was coming out, he replied "we just finished recording the 20th song yesterday, and it will be out in June" that was music to my ears!

I can't remember what the last question was perhaps someone can help me out there..."

  • More help needed for the Cure fan documentary:
  • CURE FAN DOCUMENTARY NEEDS RESEARCH ASSISTANTS:

Hi! if anyone would like to do some archival research for my cure doc, please read the following and check out my website at www.arushabaker.com. you'll find my email there, by the phone icon.

there are three areas i need quotes from by the end of the week: what is need soonest is #1...then #2, and last #3....

    1) info and quote from 1999/2000 stating that the bloodflowers album would be the last cure album. anything relating to the dreamtour being the last tour. robert going solo, etc. please include the resources & specific article data.

    2) info from any time after 1989 about touring. the drain of tour, the fun stuff, anything that catches your eye

    3) good quotes on fans. anything that supports the idea that the band shares a similar mindset to the fans. i am less interested in quotes about 'crazy fans' and more interested on what kind of fan the cure attracts.

    great resources to check out:

2a) a chain of flowers, of course! check out the articles and links pages

  • "Check out the review of the Starsky and Hutch movie, 10th paragraph! It's online here:

    http://movies2.nytimes.com/2004/03/05/movies/05STAR.html

"Mr. Phillips and his team upholster the film, which opens today nationwide, with a luscious 70's vibe. The sets luxuriate in the production designer Edward Verreaux's period credibility; Theodore Shapiro mines musical gold more thoughtful than mere pastiche. And the costume designer Louise Mingenbach earns the attention lavished on her handiwork: one of the villains wears a retro robin's-egg-blue suit that's simply too cool for words. As boldly captured by the cinematographer Barry Peterson, the atmosphere is what the Cure's Robert Smith might describe as "lime green, a sickly kind of orange."

"Certainly, the crime lord Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn, wearing a sprawling mustache suggesting a chocolate-milk smear on John Holmes's face) has the best-laid plans this side of America."

    (Thanks Justin and Matt)

"Just seen the very funny piss-take movie of John Hughes-esque 80's movies, "Not Another Teen Movie" and durÔÕone scene there is a cover of Inbetween Days playing (without vocals). The closing credits reveals the cover to be by that well known group Face To Face. Perhaps that's a slightly old spotting (the film is from 2001) but I've never seen mention of it on COF before."

  • If I'm reading this right, it would be the musical equivalent of the Berlin Wall coming down, well sort of:
  • "From this weeks "popbitch" newsletter

Tom Middleton aka Cosmos is recording a new track with Johnny Marr from The Smiths and Robert Smith from The Cure. "

Robert & Johnny together!?!? Even if it's another dodgy dance track, I can't wait to hear it.

    (Thanks Hugh, Ian and Mintsauce)

  • Robert to be featured in "a movie about subversive sexual deviance". Ok, calm down, take a deep breath, he's only on the soundtrack. : ) The press release says Reeves Gabrels with Robert Smith, but doesn't say if it will be a new track or just 'Yesterday's Gone'.
  • Update: According to the film's website, it will be 'Yesterday's Gone', not a new song.

    (Thanks Noreleis)

  • The official site has been updated with an important note for those of you going to the Barfly show. THE MAN is coming down hard...don't say you haven't been forewarned. : )

  • The Guardian mentions the Barfly show:
  • "From the Guardians pick of the week recommendations:

London: THE CURE "Passport: Back to the Bars" is the name of this series of charity gigs - a select audience gets to see them, via non-transferable tickets, hence the need for a passport. Musically, meanwhile, this couldn't be coming at a better time for the Cure: what with the band's influence on the Rapture, and Hot Hot Heat, and a box set of rarities coming out - the band's moment is undoubtedly now. · Monarch, Chalk Farm Road, NW1 (020-7961 4244) Friday 5 7.30pm The Monarch

  • Just found a 'Dots' review in Computer Games (April 2004) magazine, of all places:
  • The Cure - Join the Dots: B-sides & Rarities 1978-2001 (The Fiction Years)

    Rhino and Fiction/Elektra

    Grade: B

Overcast on the outside, or melancholy on the inside, there's nothing quite like loading the multi-disc player with a Cure marathon to emotionally indulge and unhinge. After all, itremains the band's raison d'etre nearly three decades hence. Here are four more CDs to put into heavy rotation when the mean reds or the black blues strike. The greatest thing about this extensive collection is that it was handpicked by vocalist Robert Smitth, making it a personal statement, indeed. The second-greatest thing is that this boxed set is not a shameless repackaging trick to get fans to buy a lot of what they already have just to score a few new cool tracks. Unless you have a huge stack of 12" vinyl, "extra" b-sides, Bryan "Chuck" New remixes, or bootlegged previously unreleased tracks, this is just like getting four new Cure releases. Not so great: their flaccid cover of Bowie's "Young Americans" and three plaintive interpretations of The Doors' "Hello I Love You." Amusing and worth the have nonetheless.

    - Angela Lang

There's also a brief mention of the Coachella show:

  • Wow, an old Thief mod featuring The Cure:
  • "I just stumbled across something on the internet and decided to check it out. It looks like an old Thief fan mission (a mod level playable in the PC games Thief: The Dark Project and Thief Gold) with a Cure theme has recently been "discovered". Apparently created by a disgruntled Cure fan back during that year when the labels were "waiting" to release the finished Bloodflowers album, the mission involves sneaking into Polydor mansion, stealing a Bloodflowers CD, and stealing back The Cure's contract..heh It's really only about 10 minutes long and not anything amazing, but it's a bit of Cure-themed fun...

The mission's called Bloodflowers. Anybody who has Thief or Thief Gold can find the mission and the tools necessary to play it here: http://www.thiefmissions.com

Just thought it might be something of interest."

  • Curespotting:
  • "I've just read an aticle in French Premiere about the last movie of Tim Burton which will be out on wednesday here in France and there are some words of fans about Burton. Especially Brian Molko of Placebo who answered this question "What is the first movie of Tim Burton you have seen ?" :

-Beetlejuice. I think that Tim Burton must be one of the biggest Cure fans in the world (laughs). Edward (Scissorhands), he's ROBERT SMITH. And the books he wrote with his little drawings are very inspired by The Cure."

  • Cure rumored for the Festival des Voix Du Gaou in France:
  • "The Cure has been asked to play the "Festival des Voix Du Gaou" in Toulon, France in july. I just had the information from one of the festival's manager, but this is still NOT confirmed. As I live a few kilometers from the festival site, I just can say that it's a small venue for a festival (capicity : 5000-6000). The site takes place on a peninsula in Le brusc, a small city near Toulon (10 kilometers) and Marseille (65 kilometers). I will have more informations next, but check the website (still not updated) : www.mairie-six-fours.fr/sitegaou/pres.htm"

    (Thanks to Jerome at Plainsong)

At this time only Bowie is sure. The article said that the mayor of the city said during a meeting that The cure will confirm their coming in a very few days. So according to this mayor this is sure that The cure will come. The date is not confirmed right now but according to others shows it can be July the 20th.

The festival is called : Les voix du gaou..

This is on a tiny isle in the south of France near Toulon!

Also, there are nearly confirmation for Werchter (Belgium) and Evreux (France) festivals. Some fans had great contact and The Cure have to confirm in the very next days"

Remember, these are only rumors at this time. Don't make those travel plans just yet. : )

  • Scans of the recent 'Dots' review/article from The Nation have been posted here.

  • New (well from last August) Robert interview posted on the Interviews page. In it, Robert gives a 100% guarantee that The Cure will play Mexico on this tour. Oh well Mexican fans, that's the last nail in the coffin. No shows in Mexico this year. : )
  • Update: Guys, it was a JOKE!!! I just meant that since Robert always lies in his interviews, a 100% guarantee probably meant a 0% chance. A joke.

    (Thanks Jorge)

  • David updates us on his new Cure book:
  • "About the new book about The Cure in French and probably in English. Maybe you could help me in finding some stuff :

    - English traduction of the French article : Les Etangers (Francis Dordor - Best - 79)

    - Original English version of : Une Cure de rire (New Musical Express - 81)

    - English traduction of the French article : Kiss Me : les sessions (Lydie Barbarian - Libération - 86)

    - English traduction of the French article : Portrait d'une adolescence éternelle (Thomas Sotinel - Le Monde - 92)

    - English traduction of the French article : Caprices d'adieux : « Bloodflowers » (Arnaud Viviant - Les Inrockuptibles - 00)

    - An English article written on the internet a few months/years ago about Disintegration (I read it on C.O.F. or just found the link, don't remember).

I'm also looking for fans who would be OK to let me use some personal pictures to light the text.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Cure party in Holland:

  • Curespotting:
  • "In the new "Your Band Sucks" feature (which the Cure seem to always be on!) at Something Awful (www.somethingawful.com), there is a review of the 311 cover of Lovesong...

    http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=2006

A comprehensive list of covers which appeared on soundtracks in recent years would not only be way too long to read, but it would be so thoroughly disgusting that it would probably be deemed to be in taste too poor even for Something Awful.

However, I’m sure you’ll forgive me if I take a bit of time to bash one that’s currently burning up the nobody-gives-a-shit charts: 311’s cover of The Cure’s “Lovesong.” I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say that if you’re too lame to cover The Cure properly, you have to be a pretty massive pussy. As is their mellow frat-boy wont, they have set the Reggae dial to “medium” and flaccidly plodded through the song, keeping it fairly similar to the original. Of course, they saw fit to replace Robert Smith’s plaintive, emotionally nuanced vocal performance with an absolutely blank, robotic rendition that may as well have been sung to a cat, thereby stripping the song of what little impact or meaning it may have originally had. The video is even more appalling than the song; in it, smarmy singing Ken-doll Nick Hexum sleazily croons to a sorority girl in a bar, transforming the song into nothing more than an exaggerated pick-up line. But hey, if that’s what the studio needs to do to get more people to watch Drew Barrymore give a handjob to a walrus (or whatever that movie is about), then whatever, it’s not like art still exists or anything.

    Good, huh? "

    (Thanks Sean)

"In February's issue of "RifRaf", a free music magazine, there's an interview with Mauro Pawlowski ( not know internationally i guess, but pretty well known in Belgium ), in which he talks about New Wave having influenced him, and of course he also mentions The Cure on that one. Personally i think that's pretty fun, 'cause having seen him live ( with his band: Mauro & The Grooms ) last Friday, i must say i didn't really find much "New Wave" and "Curisch" sounds in it. It was more like some kind of indrustrial... Anyway, he rocked and i liked it, so... "

    (Thanks Laurent)

"I recently spent a week in Hurghada on the Red Sea in Egypt. We flew from Gatwick with Thomas Cook and they showed the BBC 3 Dom Joly show featuring The Cure on both the outbound and the return flight. It was a real treat on a very cramped flight, especially since I missed it when it was shown on terrestrial TV. They sound great on both Inbetween Days and the shortened version of A Night Like This, and Robert's timing is impeccable when he tells Dom that he's "not that interested" in what Dom's been upto in the week preceding the show.

When I got back I picked up Q magazine and Close To Me is number 20 in the top 50 music videos... The article just says how they all got ill from being in the water for 10 hours... Not one mention of the stomach churning effects of inhaling Lol's trumpets!"

    (Thanks James)
