Encore: Play for Today, A Forest

Ho appena finito di vedere (in televisione: invidia? no, col senno di poi solo per Play for today) il mini-concerto dei
Cure in piazza a Milano, e mi sembra giunto il momento di riordinare le idee sulla loro esibizione di Imola di sabato
scorso.
Se devo essere sincero l'ho trovata un po' deludente, credo che sia stato il meno entusiasmante degli otto loro
concerti a cui ho assistito...
L'aspetto peggiore è stato sicuramente il pubblico, che non aveva nulla a che fare con i fans dei Cure! Molti
secondo me non conoscevano nemmeno le canzoni, e in ogni caso la gente era parecchio fredda, basti solo vedere
come non è stato quasi cantato il coro di Play for today! Capisco che ad un festival si possa andare per passare un
pomeriggio o una serata diversa, ma non pensavo affatto di trovare una situazione simile...
C'è anche da considerare la lunga attesa, che sicuramente ha influito sul mio stato d'animo. I Pixies sono stati
grandissimi, hanno riproposto tutte canzoni splendide e con un'intensità e una passione esemplari, veramente forti!
Ma quel Ben Harper dopo, che palle!
Troppo lungo il suo concerto, per uno come me che era agitato perché non vedeva l'ora di sentirsi i suoi Cure,
troppo stucchevoli i suoi ottimi musicisti, troppo bravi, ma non è questa la musica per me... E troppo lunga la
preparazione degli strumenti dei Cure (o forse solamente non ho più il fisico che avevo allora...).
La lontananza dal palco pure ha contribuito a creare una sensazione di distacco: negli ultimi due concerti a cui avevo
assistito ero stato in terza e in sesta fila, mentre stavolta in certi momenti mi sono dovuto accontentare del
maxischermo... Ma io vorrei essere così vicino da cogliere gli sguardi di Robert, non vedere i Cure in televisione...
E poi il concerto è stato corto. Le ultime due mie esperienze, Conegliano sotto il diluvio con Robert commovente
nel suo stoico desiderio di suonare comunque, e le quasi tre ore di Roma, concluse con The drowning man,
Charlotte sometimes e Faith dopo una serata interminabile di suoni intensissimi, erano tutt'altra cosa...
Robert poi non ha parlato quasi mai (eccetto i soliti ' k you alla fine dei brani e il classico Hello again se non sbaglio
tra il primo e il secondo pezzo), e non ha presentato neanche una canzone, nemmeno quelle nuove. Solo prima dei
bis si è lasciato andare ad un lungo monologo, dicendo (per quel che ho capito) che era stanco... E personalmente
ho avuto l'impressione che suonassero fin troppo bene, ma senza metterci l'anima...
Ma veniamo al concerto. Innanzitutto non mi è piaciuta la presenza di troppi pezzi nuovi, la maggior parte dei quali
al primo ascolto non particolarmente entusiasmanti. Nel cantato, in particolare, non mi sembra di ravvisare una gran
vena, anche se sicuramente il giudizio deve rimanere sospeso fino ad un ascolto più approfondito. Un discorso a
parte va fatto per l'ultimo pezzo tra i nuovi, The promise, nel quale ho percepito addirittura echi della mitica
Forever... In ogni caso, non mi è sembrata una grande idea cominciare con un pezzo nuovo, soprattutto se penso
che gli ultimi concerti a cui avevo assistito erano partiti con Plainsong, Out of this world o addirittura Shake dog
shake... Solo al Sonoria Festival del 1995 avevano osato cominciare con un pezzo ancora inedito, Want, che
però sinceramente è un'altra cosa rispetto alla Lost di Imola, tanto che mi era piaciuta (cosa assolutamente insolita!) al primo colpo!
E poi troppe canzoni che sento quasi ininterrottamente dal 1992, l'anno del mio primo concerto dei Cure: Inbetween
days, Just like heaven, From the edge of the deep green sea, Fascination street sono senz'altro delle seconde scelte
nella mia scaletta ideale. E anche Lovesong, Jupiter crash e Maybe someday sono delle oneste canzoni, ma non
propriamente ciò che mi aspetto... Ci sarà mai ad esempio un concerto in cui suoneranno La Ment? O Doubt?
Certo che il Dream Tour e il festival tour del 2002 mi avevano abituato bene, in termini di canzoni scelte...
Ma non ci sono stati solo elementi negativi, per fortuna... Anzi, ho trovato la voce di Robert in uno stato di forma
incredibile, e ho potuto apprezzare, seppure da lontano, i consueti balzi di Simon con il suo basso sulle ginocchia...
Tra i pezzi che sono riusciti meglio, sicuramente la trascinante Push, una rallentata e suggestiva Pictures of you e la
splendida Disintegration, con un perfetto mixaggio di chitarre e basso, e quel cantato così intenso... Fuori categoria
rimane sempre, come ovvio, One hundred years, la mia preferita in assoluto del catalogo dei Cure e dunque della
musica in generale, con il suo ritmo ossessivo e la caratteristica atmosfera a luci rosse, con i fari immobili bianchi
sparati sul viso di Robert a contraltare la pulsione della batteria... e come poter scordare le immancabili luci a flash
sul ritornello it feels like one hundred years...
E poi grandissima l'unica (purtroppo) serie di bis. Play for today come al solito coinvolgente (ma non per la gente
intorno a me...) e A forest con l'inizio accorciato e le classiche luci verdi, presagio della fine... ma dopo il calando
della chitarra di Robert e i doppi colpi di basso oramai a chiudere il concerto, all'improvviso ecco che Simon cambia
il giro di basso passando alla singola nota allungata, e realizzo immediatamente che la canzone sta per ricominciare,
come nei miei innumerevoli bootlegs, e in un rapido e furioso crescendo ecco finalmente il pogo selvaggio insieme
alle sensazioni autentiche dei concerti dei Cure... Ma è già la fine. Ma che fine... How the end always is...How the
end always is...How the end always is...
Aspettando un concerto dei Cure, dunqe a presto se ho capito bene le parole conclusive di Robert...

Disintegration-a slow, whitout phatos/concentration version. It's a pity...
One Hundred Years-played bad until the first half, the band explode after the "it feels like 100 years..."....it's
clear the band is not at the top...
The Promise - the coachella version not impressed me, but this time it seems very better. A good song, played
with intense feeling.

Play for Today-always a good song, maybe played too slowly
A Forest-as 100 years, the song explode after the middle. A decent finale.

conclusions:
1-this is a festival. For those who have seen live the cure many times, is clear that they don't do the best in the
festivals, with setlist not so perfect...
2-this is the first date of the tour. They have no concentration, no feeling between each other. I know this and
I'm no surprised about.
3-new songs are good, surely the best things until wish.
4-sorry for those who have seen them live for the first time...they are not ever like this;)
5-a nice night, not the best and not the worst. Simply the Cure at the start of a tour;)

Sul primo non mi dilungo...il genere non mi piace proprio, ma devo dire che i musicisti della sua band sono ottimi,

Lost-uno dei pezzi migliori di cicco Bob da quindici anni buoni a questa parte. Non c'è che dire. Bello ed ispirato.

The End of the World-dal vivo fa cacare perchè, come già detto, mancano i musicisti. Molto, molto meglio la
versione in studio, dove diventa un brano pop ben fatto, scritto e confezionato.

In between Days-non l'ho mai sopportata. Doverla sorbire ad ogni concerto è una croce che mi porto avanti da
quindici anni...
Just Like Heaven-vedi sopra
Jupiter Crash-bella sorpresa. Nonostante bobbettone sembri non considerare il periodo 92-2000 come "vita dei
cure"(leggi alcune ultime interviste) questa qua salta fuori dal cilindro. L'unico bel pezzo di un album fogna come
wild mood swings, molto bella.
Pictures of You-classica, carina, con qualche stecca di troppo in mezzo, ma vabbè
Us or Them-molto interessante....comincio a credere che sto disco nuovo sarà da sentire
Maybe Someday-che palle. Odio Bloodflowers, un disco che mi annoia alla morte, non ispirato, un nulla nel nulla.
From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea-la canzone di per se è splendida, ma come in altre sedi, la mancanza di chi
le suonò(boris e porl) si sente eccome....l'unica verione decente che ho sentito in questi anni è stato milano 1992...
alt.end-da risentire
Disintegration-versione fiacca fiacca. peccato
One Hundred Years-fino a metà non decolla, poi il ciccio prende fiato e forza ed esplode(non lui, la canzone). Da
brividi il cambio centrale. Un brano che è un capolavoro di per se.
The Promise - ooooh!!! se l versione in mp3 del coachella fest mi faceva cacare quella live mi ha emozionato.
effettivamente quell'mp3 non si sentiva granchè. bella davvero, direi quasi emozionante. E per un gruppo da cui
mi aspetto ormai solo cose al massimo passaili, è molto. Bella, molto alla the Kiss, come struttura.

Play for Today-è sempre lei
A Forest-inizio stentato per poi riprendersi nel finale, dove ciccio decide di "allungarla" mettendo in difficoltà
O'Donnel e Bamonte, che già si erano "smontati" da microfoni etc. Come 100 Years, prende vita da metà in poi,
ricordandoci che comunque chei sta sul palco conosce il suo mestiere ed ha scritto delle canzoni della madonna in
25 anni

conclusioni:
1-era un festival. Chi ha visto i Cure svariate volte come me, sa che nei festival le scalette sono poppettare. Basti
ricordare Sonoria. Già il fatto di infilarci 100 Years e roba simile, è un ,miracolo. Un plauso x aver evitato le più
ovvie, lallabai, fraidei aim in lov, clos tu mi e roba simile a favore di brani ome jupiter crash, pop si, ma
infinitamente meno conosciuti dalla massa che era lì non solo per ciccio, ma soprattutto x gli altri.
2-era la prima data del tour dopo le due di riscaldamento in usa. hanno proposto molti brani nuovi, quindi era ovvio
che fossero più statici concentrati sul palco e che, comunque, non tutto filasse liscio. Lo sapevo, me lo aspettavo
e quindi la cosa non mi ha ne infastidito, ne delkuso. Anzi. a distanza di anni, i Cure per me sono un gruppo di
persone he suonano, non degli idoli. Quindi possono benissimo sbagliare.
3-I btrani nuovi mi sono piaciuti, e detto da me che odio tutto dal 92 in poi, è strano. Questo perchè i Cure non
sono più Dark dall'82 e non hanno più nulla di Wave dall'89. Sono solo un gruppo rock/pop con venature qua e là
di Wave. ma sfumature proprio. presi così, questi brani hanno, una volta tanto, senso di esistere. non sono dei
capolavori(ma perchè? Kiss me era un capolavoro?!)ma sono, comunque, ispirati, freschi ed interessanti. Ed era
anni che ciccio non faceva qualcosa che potesse essere reputato interessante. Era ora. Dirò che ho gradito quasi
di più cose come Lost e Promise rispetto al resto, 100 years e simili escluse.
4-mi spiace x chi li vedeva la prima volta....fidatevi, non sono sempre così
5-A napoli la storia è cambiata, perlomeno come scaletta. Molte cose del periodo darche(80-82)hanno farcito un
esibizione molto più lunga, dato che non era un festival vero e proprio. Chi li ha visti faccia sapere.
6-per quello che mi riguarda aspetto incuriosito il disco nuovo, che mi puzza tanto di"piacevole". Ripeto, non
capolavoro, ma piacevole si. E da un gruppo che fa dischi da 25 anni, non posso aspettarmi di meglio. Bella serata
per chi li ha visti altre volte. meno, credo, per i neofiti. Ci si vede a settembre.

It's been a very interesting gig, in front of a classical "festival audience" - that is, not everybody interested in The
Cure. Half the audience (almost 70,000 people) in fact was there for Ben Harper, and it's difficult to find somebody
who's very fond of both, since their music is so different.
That's why sometimes the crowd seemed a little bit "cold". In addition Robert & the others did not seem in great
mood at the beginning, it was the first time Robert didn't say a word among the songs.
But before the encore set he apologized, saying it was the first gig of the summer tour and they had to be very
concentrated, that's why they seemed so cold and detached.

Well, thanks to their concentration, the concert was amazing. They played greatly, and personally I liked the
setlist a lot. Jupiter Crash was a nice surprise, six songs from the new album (Alt.end and Us And Them never
heard before) played passionately, and above all the three final songs: Disintegration, One Hundred Years and
The Promise. One Hundred Years was so intense, and The Promise is already a classic- so breathtaking, I can't
wait to listen to the studio version.
Great gig, and Robert left saying "see you later this year", so we all hope for a tour. In front of a different crowd.

An enormous crowd - more than 100.000 people - welcomes the Cure in Italy after a couple of years of lackness.
The organization is good, maybe too much: only people who arrived at Imola at 11 'o clock in the morning could
get the pass for the place near to the stage, the others (me too, who drove 450 km to see them) are 50 mt. distant.
They started at 10.15 p.m. with a new song. I have to say that new songs are well done, even if I love much more
the most inspired ones of their first albums. By the way, it is a "classic" festival gig. Maybe too many new songs
in one time, I have to say. The hits are sung by most of people and I can see that with such a long career The
Cure caught very different kind of fans: everyone has its fave album, but I was quite desperate when a guy asked
me if "Push" was an old song or what.
When I saw 15-20 arms in the air at the first notes of "one hundred years", I thought "Here we are. Again.",
and I loved those unknown guys who were singing with me, alone in the crowd, "it doesn't matter if we all die".
Here we are. Again.

Though I'm afraid to say that  I must agree with what Francesco said: the concert of Imola wasn't very good...
maybe because it's the first one of the summer festivals.  Maybe the next ones will be better. Unfortunately I
can't go to Naples to see them, but I hope they will be back in Italy in september, as I heard.

I just returned with a few cure friends from Imola, after travelling  nearly 2x900 km.
Well the show was a little short. The band's sound was great, the highlights for me were: fascination st, before
3 (?), the promise, and a forest. the promise sounded more better as on the coachella show. it was fantastic. it
seemed developed to be more 'play-able', and i think this came true.also very memorable was 100 years, and
push was the first time for me to listen it live. anyway, they came back only 1 time, which was for a lot of us a bit
disappointed. also it was a little bit disappointed that there were not 'real surprise' song, like charlotte, strange
day, or like cockatoos...

sorry to mention it, but true: the organization of the festival is very bad, there were very big crowd before the
serurity check, because we had to go on it more times too. and also, there were not enough toilettes. i also made
some photos ( unfortunately some far away from the band)

summa: the band is ok., and we hope in a return during the autumn, with only and main concert performers...
( sorry Shainakitty, i didnt have the chance to find you -sorry)

The show was fantastic for me, but the crowd seemed too much apatic! maybe they got stoned by 6 hours of
calling, starsailor, pj harvey, pixies & ben harper. this was the first time i heard the new songs except TEOTW:
they're WONDERFUL!!! I love'em all. The only one which seemed weaker to me was The Promise.Seems strange
i know, but maybe i read too many entushiastic reviews of it that i got too high expectations. For me it grows in
intensity too much slower to catch instanstaneously.
Lost: how can anyone say is chaotic ??? it's probably the most beautiful of the new ones. I was already singing
along to it without even knowing the lyrics : )
Us or Them: the chorus "i don't want you anywhere near me" is great!
alt.end: reminded me too much something off bloodflowers (TLDOS or WTBAS) in the guitar riff at the beginning.
Without saying further on each of them: they all seem very "rock"! It this is Robert's compromise between rock
and pop, it's more than satisfying for me!!
Looking really forward for the rest of the album ,which should be great. My definition based on these songs: less
angry than pornography, less sperimental than KM, a mixture of the two. that's my impression of the album
based on my first listen of 6 new songs.
And I'm also glad I was there for the world premiere of alt.end and Us or them : D

Rest of the show: Jupiter crash and push were beautiful surprises. 100 y and disintegration. same marvellous
energy as ever. The encore was just great: PFT for the "oohh-oh-ohh" part and "A forest" for the hands clapping
along with the end bass lines... The two most "participative" songs, as my brother defined them.
Some little doubts: i was a little sad that the encore set was so short, and without any of the usual pop songs
(WCIBY, close to me), and that they only played Maybe someday from Bloodflowers.

Unfortunately, for the first time, they disappointed me a bit: they seemed not in good form; great songs like Push,
From the edge…, Pictures of you, for example, sounded flat, without the right impact. Besides, I didn’t like the
choice of songs like Jupiter crash and Maybe someday…(from the same album I would have preferred Want and
The last day of summer…)

Some words about the two very new songs I listened tonight (Us or them and alt.end):
they’re not bad, but nothing really special, something ordinary… Us or them is hard and angry, with rough
guitars, it could get better with time; alt.end is more pop, not bad as I’ve already said, but it has not impressed me.
The promise, instead, is great listened live.
