  • Regarding that Wes Borland story from a couple of days ago, a source close to the band says "There is no truth whatsoever in this rumour...".

  • Curespotting:
  • "I want to inform you, that some days ago we relased the 2nd issue of Internet art magazine called "Taboo" (www.taboo.art.pl). You can find there two articles about The Cure. Review of french, tribute Cure album called "...Imaginary Songs - a tribute To The Cure" (http://www.taboo.art.pl/html/rec37.html), and article about november Cure concert in Berlin (http://www.taboo.art.pl/html/rel04.html).

There is also a lot of stuff about other artists/groups, such as: Porcupine Tree, Sigur Ros, PeterGabriel, Coil, Tori Amos, Depeche Mode, David Bowie, The Legendary Pink Dots, The Future Sound Of London and many, many others! The articles are in POLISH language only."

    (Thanks Slay)

  • (Thanks Jeff)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Emily Eavis, daughter of Glastonbury supremo Michael Eavis, mentions "meeting her hero" in this artcile from the Daily Telegraph

""I remember the day I met my idol - Robert Smith from The Cure. I was only nine and covered in CND badges. I had handfuls of bits of paper for him to sign for my mates - and he was so cool. But my mum was slightly embarrassed about that side of things. Giving, rather than making money or hanging out with pop stars, was the priority. She was always the one with a blanket or a spare tent." "

    Full article here."

    (Thanks Hugh)

    # 5 @ Amazon Germany (music DVDs)

    # 4 @ Amazon USA (music DVDs)

  • More Cure ringtones:
  • "I just found another website that has a bunch of Cure ringtones for Sprint PCS phones. They have Close to Me, Faith, Fascination Street, The Holy Hour, Just Like Heaven (a much better version than the one available directly through Sprint), and Let's Go To Bed. The website is www.mbuzzy.com, and you go to it from your home computer. They have lots of songs, plus games and screen savers as well. Best of all, it's free. "

    (Thanks Gregory)

  • Cure cover:
  • "I dunno if it's old news, but the brazilian "punk" band CPM22 (quotation marks on purpose) did an accoustic cover of Boys don't cry for MTV Brazil. They seem to sing "cover it all up with flies" too... There's a secret to have a sucesful band in Brazil: get a job at MTV, then start a band (I guess you must already have a band to get a job there, not sure). You'll get a lot of promotion for free, and you can even have your own unplugged sometime."

    (Thanks BACO)

  • Curespotting:
  • "There are two Cure mentions in the July, 2003 issue of Rolling Stone magazine. On Tricky's new album "Vulnerable": "Tricky's penchant for odd covers also appears, but where before he covered - and transformed - hip-hop classics from Public Enemy or Eric B. and Rakim, here he goes totally Eighties with overly faithful takes on XTC's 'Dear God' and the the Cure's 'The Lovecats'."

And a review of the "Trilogy" DVD: "Three classic Cure albums performed live, in their entirety. Just like heaven, right? Not quite. Onstage in Berlin 2002, the aging goth vets still sound appropriately grandiose and gloomy (helped immeasurably by the surround-sound mix), especially when tackling early favorites such as 'The Hanging Garden'. But the band's by-the-book set lists strip away any real musical tension, and it's run-through of 2000's meandering 'Bloodflowers' wastes an entire disc. For the black-eyeliner die-hards only."

    (Thanks Rust)

"In the June edition of Sound & Vision, pg. 18, there is a sidebar article about Kodak's Rock X-posed tour, a collection of the 500 greatest photos in rock history. In the photo with the article, most prominent is of a Ebet Roberts photo of Robert Smith. I haven't checked yet, but limited edition prints might be for sale."

    (Thanks Jason)

    June 22nd

  • Some disappointing news from Julianne Regan, but probably for the best:
  • "Sorry to have to tell you this, but we have had to withdraw our permission for our cover of "Apart" to be used on the album of Cure covers ('Jumping Someone Else's Jubilee'). I promise you that it will see the light of day in one way or another....!"

Well, there goes my only interest in that project.

    (Thanks Lynne)

  • Wes Borland and The Cure? :
  • "I was just listening to Seattle's radio station KNDD today and they had mentioned that Wes Borland, former guitarist of Limp BizKit was asked to play guitar for the CURE but declined. That was all that was said so I am not sure if it was for a tour coming or a music project. I just thought it was interesting."

Update: A source close to the band says "There is no truth whatsoever in this rumour...".

    (Thanks Barb)

  • Full Trilogy show on brazilian tv:
  • "The brazilian channel 603 ( Direct TV ) will be doing a 24 hs. Trilogy marathon on July 5, 6, 11, 12, 13 and 18, showing the entire show ( note that this is not the tv edit version ), non stop.... all day long!! "

    (Thanks Antonio)

  • Trilogy gets a great review from Digitally Obsessed.
  • (Thanks Juan)

  • Trilogy chart update:
  • "#4 @ fnac.com France (music DVDs)"

    (Thanks David)

"This week, the Trilogy DVD is #1 in the top ten DVDs at Mixup (one of México's largest chain of record stores). http://www.mixup.com.mx/mixup/subdept_portada.asp?subdept_id=13000

At 204 pesos, it's still the best price I've found so far, in stores (though you probably could get it for less at El Chopo)."

    (Thanks Leonardo)

"Trilogy has dropped to #72 in the German Top 100 album charts (2nd week)."

    (Thanks Simon)

  • Cure cover:
  • "I just picked up a CD called "The Heart of Roadrunner Records". Chimaira does a cover of Fascination Street. It's very heavy and worth a listen."

    (Thanks Amber)

  • Cure night in Paris on July 13th. See the flyer here.
  • (Thanks Bill)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I just picked up a 2-cd set called "Sing a Song For You: Tribute to Tim Buckley." Amongst other covers is "Buzzin' Fly" performed by Shelleyan Orphan featuring Boris Williams on drums. It's a really great CD!

In the July issue of "The Face" magazine they have a short blurb about the Cure: "The Cure Revival: Robert Smith working with Junkie XL, a new Cure album in the pipeline, Tricky's covering "Love Cats," and TOK and Sizzla toasting over a "Close to Me" riddim."

    (Thanks Rust)

"I thought I would tell you of a bit of an unusual Curespotting - 1410 WLAC AM, one of the local NPR stations in Nashville TN plays a snippet of the re-mix version of 'Close to Me' to bring in the hour at 8 pm.

I have to admit, it's not exactly the first place I expected to hear the Cure!"

    (Thanks Dawn)

  • Trilogy logo thing related to the Greatest American Hero?:
  • "Wacky observation: has anyone else noticed that the Trilogy logo is almost identical to the logo of The Greatest American Hero, the short-lived early-80s tv show? “Believe it or not, I’m walking on air...” I’m sure it’s just coincidence, right?"

Hmm, could Robert be trying to tell us something about his secret identity? : )

    (Thanks Jeff)

    June 19th

  • This is probably an error, but as of 11:57pm (US central time), Digital Eyes has Trilogy listed for $6.95. It isn't in stock, and I don't know if they'll honor the price if its a mistake, but it couldn't hurt to give it a shot. I ordered a couple and just got an e-mail confirmation, so let's see what happens.
  • Update: Looks like they caught the mistake, but the new price is still the best in the US - $14.97.

  • Robert reveals some of the plans for next year in an interview with Finnish magazine Soundi:
  • "Bought a Finnish music magazine yesterday (Soundi), they had a Cure article and I noted a few new things:

: Robert's solo record has been put back on the shelf to wait, half-ready (Robert's parts done), to be possibly finished after a few more Cure records have been recorded and put out

: possible festival dates in summer 2004, maybe a tour

: 2004-2005, all old Cure discs will be re-released with better sound and bonus discs of unreleased stuff. There will also be a B-sides box released, quite likely the same year."

    (Thanks Liza)

"There is a 5-paged Robert interview in the July issue of the Finnish music magazine called Soundi, titled "Robert Smith - the man who changed his mind". It's about the Trilogy mostly, but it mentions also the remastering of the albums in 2004, the new album, and Robert's appearance in the South Park episode in 1998. Also a review of the Trilogy DVD is in the magazine."

    (Thanks BunnyCure)

  • Trilogy recorded 2nd week US sales of 2,718 and drops from #4 to #10 on the Billboard/Soundscan Top Music DVDs chart. Total US sales so far - 6,281.
  • (Thanks Jeff)

  • Robert certainly has been busy with the collaborations lately:
  • "The "Sunday Mail" here in Scotland reported that Robert Smith is to be a guest vocalist on a tribute album to Alex Harvey. It is to be an album of cover versions of their own songs recorded by the remaining members of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. The article mentioned other guest singers to appear on the album, including Nick Cave, Ian Astbury, and Lulu. I didnt keep the article, but it was published last Sunday."

    (Thanks Jamie)

  • Another new Cure article in the new issue of Musikexpress:
  • "German music magazine "Musikexpress" features another 4 page article including an interview with Robert and Simon during which Simon gets really drunk. Quite funny but no really new information in there. They also review the DVD with 5 out of 6 possible stars."

If anyone wants to translate this article or the one from Zillo, I'd love to post it. Thanks!

    (Thanks Martin)

  • It sounds like Trilogy is selling pretty well in Cork, Ireland:
  • "Looks like Cork has been sold out of Trilogy DVDs...Virgin; HMV; Golden Discs have all sold their allocations..Virgin will have more in stock next friday."

    (Thanks Donal)

  • Trilogy update for Brazil and Athens:
  • "Hi, brasilians just to know, Trilogy DVD is now available in Brasil (http://www.siciliano.com.br/dvd.asp?orn=DSE&Tipo=2&ID=292038). But it is so much expensive.

Olá, brasileiros só para saber, Trilogy DVD está disponível no Brasil (http://www.siciliano.com.br/dvd.asp?orn=DSE&Tipo=2&ID=292038). Mas está caro prá caramba."

    (Thanks Alvaro)

"Finally Trilogy Dvd is here in Athens! I found it yesterday at Metropolis records house for 31,70 Euros! In a few hours there was nothing left."

    (Thanks Panos)

  • Has anyone heard anything about Trilogy in Chile?:
  • "Anybody knows if the 3logy DVD is available in Chile?, it was supose to be released by June 15th. Down here we use zone 4, which is hard to find on the web...any tip where i can find it? please e-mail me to ralcalde@lilly.com"

Update: "someone asked about Trilogy`s release in Chile. I don`t know if any label (their old Universal or their new BMG) is going to officially release it here. Anyway, it`s been imported by some record stores. I bought it last friday in a record store in the Paseo Las Palmas in Providencia (Santiago), it costs 22.000 pesos (30 US$). Another record store in Providencia, Fun Tracks (www.funtracks.cl), promised to have it available this week. It's true that it's expensive, but it's worth any peso. I would have paid way much more to see that show if I had the time to do so. Watching Disintegration played in its entirety is a dream come true."

    (Thanks Roberto and Raul)

  • Cure cover:
  • "I just listened to the new record "Live in Mexico" of the Austrian band "Heinz" (called "Heinz aus Wien" outside of Austria; the band is quite well-known in German-speaking countries) and the last track happens to be a cover version of "Inbetween Days".

    Band-homepage: http://www.heinzauswien.com/ (Band)

A sample (1min. 27) can be found at: http://www.heinzauswien.com/cds_A0.html (click on the note-symbol)"

    (Thanks Markus)

  • Curespotting:
  • "On UK digital music channel The Amp they're currently running an interview with Zwan in which Billy Corgan states The Cure as being his biggest musical influence and says Robert is a genius. They also play a video clip of The Lovecats in this feature."

    (Thanks Mark)

"Two days agom, in the Programm named "Plásticos y Decibelios" (one of the daily programms from M80 Radio, a Spanish radio station), which usually deals with news related to music, Julián Ruiz (its presenter) mentioned "Robert Smith from The Cure" in relation th JunkieXL´s new album, RadioXL, beacuse Robert has taken part in it."

    (Thanks Sharon)

"This weeks NME mention: Stuart Braithwaite picks Disintegration as track 6 in his ultimate cd. "Again, there's a bit of self-loathing here which always goes down a treat. It's the first album that I remember buying on the first day it came out. We played with them last year too which was a bit of a dream come true"

    (Thanks Hugh)

  • One from the sad but true files - Robert works with Blink-182:
  • From MTV

Blink-182 LP Gets Title From GN'R, Gloom From Robert Smith

    06.17.2003 10:04 AM EDT

IRVINE, California — Blink-182 are continuing their fine tradition of potty humor album titles, following up 2001's Take Off Your Pants and Jacket with Use Your Erection I and II.

Drummer Travis Barker revealed the Guns N' Roses-inspired name at Saturday's KROQ Weenie Roast, where he performed with the Transplants (see "Pink Teams With Transplants, Good Charlotte Unplug For Weenie Roast"). He said the album is due October 28, although a spokesperson at the band's label said it's scheduled for November.

According to Barker, a collaboration with his friends the Neptunes is still just in talks, but Blink-182 are definitely working with a few guests, including DJ Shadow, Dan the Automator and singer Robert Smith of the Cure.

"We just got a lot of people who ... we love and we look up to," Barker said. "[The Smith collaboration] is a super downer. I mean, there's some dark songs on the record. It's pretty cool."

Blink-182 have four songs left to record for the album, which is being produced by longtime associate Jerry Finn (see "Blink-182 'Halfway' Done With LP, Plan To Play Middle East") "It's me working on more beats and rhythms, but the same Blink formula," Barker said of the sound. "It's just new, it's fresh, it's where we should be after two years, you know?"

    —Corey Moss

    (Thanks Dudley and pharaoh)

  • Cure article in the new Zillo magazine:
  • "The newest edition of ZILLO magazine features a 4 page article + also 100 years from the dvd is on the vcd that comes with the mag"

    (Thanks Dennis)

  • Trilogy update from Ireland:
  • "The Trilogy DVD has finally arrived in Ireland. I bought mine in Virgin Cork this morning.......though i happened to buy the last one they had, they had ordered just three and they were all purchased this morning! I got home as fast as i could and threw it on and i'd like to sum it up in one big word - SENSATIONAL!"

    (Thanks Paul J.)

    And from Western Canada:

"I received my copy today that I ordered from Amazon for $18.89cdn (they have since raised the price to $20.24cdn). The local major retailer A & B Sound lists it on their website for $23.49cdn but I stopped by the store here in Victoria and they had lots on the shelf for $21.99.

    http://www.absound.ca/ ProductDetailMovie.aspx?ProdType=DVD&SKU=0121300369

I haven't had time to watch it all yet - I just skimmed through a few songs to get a feel for the quality....first impression is very very positive. Most important thing is to pay attention to the liner notes, specifically where it says TURN IT UP"

    (Thanks Doug)

  • Trilogy review from Italy:
  • "an italian website has put a review of the DVD online. Nothing really new: it seems a remotely celebrative review at the very beginning, some excerpts from the interviews are quoted and the extras of the DVD are reported; the highlights of the concerts are also pointed out ("One Hundred Years goes like a train; Hanging Garden, one of the best british rock songs of the eighties, unfolds all its tribal power,Pictures Of You is cold and charming: the perfect Cure-song; Bloodflowers closes the circle in another sonic whirl"). Somewhere else it says "The band is in a good shape, Smith has long since given up the behaviour of the shy shoegazer who is only concerned with his guitar. Gallup provides dynamism in a perhaps contrived live set by filling the stage with agile movements and a substantial and metallic bass, trademark of the band". It concludes highlighting tha fact that - regrettably - the other encores are missing as well as subtitles. The link is:

    http://www.kwmusica.kataweb.it/kwmusica/pp_scheda.jsp?idContent=111194&idCategory=2028"

    (Thanks Davide)

  • The Cure vs. Queen:
  • "The site Rockstar.it, as you probably remember, is featuring a best-album-of-all-times tournament and this week there's the Cure's Disintegration vs. Queen's "A night at the opera". I think you can vote several times, so you can vote now and then tomorrow, or maybe after a few hours/minutes (i don't know precisely). don't vote just once!!!!"

    (Thanks Pietro)

  • Trilogy chart positions:
  • "Trilogy entered the german albumcharts (in germany dvd sales are counted as album sales) at a very respectable #28."

    (Thanks Dennis)

"Just noticed that TRILOGY is up to #3 on Amazon.com's best seller list."

    (Thanks Mark)

    "# 5 @ eil.com (music DVDs)"

    (Thanks David)

  • Curespotting:
  • "The Cure feature in NME's current Glastonbury special Magazine, out now in the UK (and selected outlets abroad) for £4.99. There is a double page picture of Robert on page 90/91 under the title '86/90/95', THE CURE: Thrice headlining Kings of Glasto in a decade of high dramatics. The following page consists of pictures of the fans and an article about the girl who was heicoptered to hospital during the crush at their 1990 set."

    (Thanks Veritas)

"I was looking at the reviews for the new Hot Hot Heat cd "Make Up The Breakdown" and almost every review mentions the cure in various ways.

Spin: "If Robert Smith were a student-loan wage slave working for the lost weekend, if Interpol had balls, they'd still be unfit to wax Hot Hot Heat's van."

Rolling Stone: "Front man Steve Bays yelps like a rockabilly Robert Smith, while his band pounds through arresting, cheery three-minute musical sermons in mod, ska, punk and synth."

L.A. Times: "With Steve Bays' faux-tortured vocals (Robert Smith on antidepressants?) providing the narration, listeners might want to rage, or they might want to disco."

The Onion: ": The most energetic bits of classic Elvis Costello and XTC battle to be heard over Hot Hot Heat's most prevalent band-of-reference, The Cure. That comparison is apt only as applied to singer Steve Bays' voice, which shares Robert Smith's peculiar ability to sound simultaneously whiny and confident. (Make Up The Breakdown's final song, "In Cairo," even seems like a sly reference to The Cure's "Fire In Cairo.")

I thought it had a Robert Smith kind of feel but I thought it was just me. Apparently not!"

    (Thanks Lindsey)

"The DVD is finally in the Fnac shop (at least in Annecy) since monday. (I'm a bit disappointed by the 'artwork', if I may say...). Also, in the Fnac shops as well they have a small Fnac book about 'the perfect cd collection - 250 you must have', in which they show album covers and speak of Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography (the real trilogy?) and The head on the Door (as well as many other brilliant albums My Bloody Valentine, Siouxsie and The Banshees, The La's, and so many others)"

    (Thanks Fabien G)

"On saturday 14 on the french channel "M6" they put "Six different ways" (a little part !) on a review for the french film "Filles uniques". I can't find any reason why, maybe they're is not... but it was great to hear again that wonderful song."

    (Thanks Gweza)

    June 13th

  • New Robert Interviews:
  • "Just thought you might like to know that I recently had the massive honour of interviewing Robert at Olympic Studios in London for Radar magazine (a brand new UK monthly music publication).

You can find the interview at www.radarmagazine.co.uk/interviews/interviews_the_cure.htm"

    (Thanks Becky)

"There's an interview to Robert on "Musica" a magazine that comes out with the italian daily "la Repubblica". Robert says that the next Cure album will be the darkest album of the music history! "

    (Thanks Rossanna)

  • Here's a Trilogy article from French magazine Elegy:
  • (Thanks Melanie)

  • Trilogy delay in Quebec:
  • "Just to tell you that I tried to buy the DVD on June 3rd, but the DVD was not available in Quebec, Canada. People in Quebec will have to wait a couple of weeks (until the end of june) because the DVD is being rated by the "Régie du Cinéma du Québec" (http://www.rcq.gouv.qc.ca/). Sorry."

    (Thanks Crow's Angel)

  • For everyone who has written in and complained about not being able to get Trilogy to play on X-Box and Playstation 2, here is the reply from Rob Gill at Eagle Vision:
  • "I DONT BELIEVE THEY ARE WORKING ON X-BOX PLAYERS. WE ARE WAITING ON MICROSOFT TO FINALIZE A DEAL. THEY SHOULD HOWEVER PLAY ON PS2'S"

Update: "I noticed the news you posted about people not being able to play the Trilogy DVD on their X-box and I just wanted to report that I have not had any problems paying it on my X-box (ntfs). I know that Microsoft has changed their DVD drive vendors at least once since the X-box was released so their could be compatability issues with one of the various drives they have used. I dunno if it helps but I bought my X-box during the inital launch and so far I have enjoyed watching my Trilogy DVD several times. Keep up the good work!!!"

I should also strees that many people HAVE been able to play it on X-box and PS2.

    (Thanks Rob and Matthew)

  • More Trilogy reports from Italy:
  • "I bought yesterday my copy of the DVD in Conegliano, it costs 30 euros and not 22 as I read. but it works perfectly."

    (Thanks Rossanna)

"I bought my trilogy dvd copy at cdnow store in rome yesterday, after i ordered it about two weeks ago on www.cdnow.it site, but it's an import copy from england.i payed 36,90 euro for it. the boys in the store told me they couldn't know if and when the dvd will be released for italy."

    (Thanks Marco)

"Trilogy dvd is out now (11/06) in Bari, in the South of Italy."

    (Thanks Ipiepo)

"maybe now it's ridundant, but i confirm that in Italy they've got the DVD! i found it today in a shop called Mipatrini in Perugia, but it costs a fortune (31,90 euros) compared to the price they give on some web stores!"

    (Thanks Pietro)

"Today finally I found and bought the Trilogy Dvd at Mariposa in Milano! I had the same feeling as the day I saw the show last November (in Hambourg)!!!! Robert is the best."

    (Thanks Andrea)

    And one from Brazil:

"Another brazilian store is accepting pre-orders (June 30th is the expected delivery), www.submarino.com.br . Price is R$ 69,90 (have you noticed that our currency is "Robert Smiths"?)"

    (Thanks BACO)

    And one from Canada:

"I live in New Brunswick, on the East Coast of Canada, and I was able to pick up a copy of Trilogy on DVD for $29.99 (Canadian) at a local music shop. Oddly, it wasn't available at any of the major chains, only a smaller chain store. Anyway, if we can get it here, then I assume it must be available nation-wide."

    (Thanks Christian)

  • A confirmation on Region 0 coding and clearing up(?) the "who did the Trilogy artwork" question from a few weeks back:
  • "Just to confirm what Fuji said about the copy of Trilogy he received from Amazon.co.uk. I bought my copy (in England) instore at HMV. The hmv.co.uk website states "all DVD's are formatted for Region 2 (Europe)", however my Trilogy pack states "0 Pal" (i.e. Region 0, PAL). So it looks like the UK version is in fact Region 0, although anyone thinking of buying the UK version should take note that it is of course still only suitable for PAL format. (I honestly have no idea if all countries with Region 0 are in fact PAL format countries??)

Also, remember the "did he or didn't he" mini-saga over whether or not Robert designed the packaging for Trilogy? I've just noticed, if you look at the bottom-right corner of the back of the box (at least on the UK copy) it says "Packaging design by Nikkie Amouyal"."

Update: "Just wanted to let you know that the "did he or didn't he design the dvd case?" debate is not necessarily settled. As a graphic designer I can tell you that naming a package designer can have very little meaning. A package designer is often someone who takes the art provided and uses Quark XPress or some other layout software to put everything together for the final product.

It could very well be that the photoshop work and font selection, etc... was done by Robert and the packaging designer simply formatted the art and prepared it for print for Eagle Vision. Or it could be that the packaging designer designed the whole scratch. I'm just saying that it doesn't necessarily solve anything is all."

    (Thanks Dave Ace and Andrew)

  • Here's a look at some Trilogy posters that are up in Berlin:
  • (Thanks Simon)

  • Cure cover:
  • "Just wanted to let you know that the group Anberlin, on their debut album "Blueprints for the Black Market," have included a cover of "Lovesong." It's a pretty decent rock cover. Oddly, though, in the liner notes, they credit the writing of this song to "W. Bransby, S. Gallup, R. O'Donnell, R. Smith, P. Thompson & L. Tolhurst." I'm still not sure how they got "W. Bransby" out of "Boris Peter Bransby-Williams" ! The album was released May 09, 2003, on Tooth & Nail Records (which makes this band Christian Rock? They do sing about hope and positivity...oh no! They are!)"

Update: "It is looks like Tooth & Nail records are the people confusing Boris for W. Bransby. • Good news for Australian fans who don't want to wait until Aug. 4th to get Trilogy:
  • "Just thought you might like to let Australian fans know that i received my copy from Amazon.co.uk today and can confirm that it is in fact coded for all regions (Region 0, PAL) and WILL play without any trouble on all Australian region 4 DVD players. The amazon website states that this dvd is coded for region 2 but the copy i received from them is not restricted to any region at all. So for those who dont want to wait until August 4 , get ordering from amazon in the uk and you should have your order within a week. The total charge when converted to Australian dollars for the dvd plus postage via Air Mail from the UK is $41.73 AUD which is a very good price. "

  • FNAC in Brussels is doing their part to promote Trilogy:
  • "Looks like Fnac Brussels is very Cure-minded:

Since yesterday they have a lot of DVD's in stock (about 40 discs), and they promote it like "coup de coeur / niet te missen" (= increases your heartbeat, don't miss this one). Also, the Trilogy DVD played on more than 30 screens at the same time."

    (Thanks Wout)

  • Cure parties:
  • "There will be a Cure party at the Piano Vache (Paris, 5ème arr) on june 26th (9pm/2am) for the release of the dvd."

    (Thanks Jean-François)

"We are from the Home Bar, a Depeche Mode tribute bar in Madrid where we also play a lot of Cure music, and made some parties in the past, like the Bloodflowers and Greatest Hits releases or a special Cure party in our 5th anniversary last year. We are doing a Trilogy release party on June 12th!"

  • Read a Robert interview from Brazilian newspaper "Folha de Sao Paulo" in the interviews section.

  • You can listen to Junkie XL and Robert doing 'Perfect Blue Sky' (about an hour and 9 minutes in) at the PinkPop Festival, but it sounds like Robert didn't actually appear via satellite. His vocals sound identical to the album version.

  • Trilogy update for Italy and Spain:
  • "I've been following the endless relase date shifting in the various nations. Just now I received a phone call from my favorite music shop telling me that my two copies of the Trilogy DVD are ready for me to come and take them :-)

I live in Italy, in the city of Parma. Since I'm seeing a lot of uncertainty about Italy release date (the official site still does not mention it), I'll share with you what I know. It was supposed to be the 2nd, then the 6th, and now it's here, at least at my shop.

For your interest, the name of the shop is Music Mille, located in viale dei Mille in Parma, Italy."

    (Thanks Giovanni)

"Finally FNAC's Customer service replied to my mail confirming that DVD is not yet out in Italy but it has been ordered by their stores: end of next week (june 20th) should be the target date for having it available at Turin's FNAC store. Below the text of the mail in italian language:

  • Curespotting:
  • "I'm embarrassed to report that my friend forced me to listen to the new Jewel cd this weekend - "0304," and while reading the liner notes, stumbled upon some disturbing information. She says that the song "Sweet Temptation" was inspired by the idea to "do something dark, sort of like The Cure." I listened to this song, and it sounded nothing like The Cure. Who would have thought the Cure influenced Jewel??"

  • Having trouble finding the Trilogy dvd in the US & Canada? Check out the Store Reports page to see where fans are finding it and where they're not. Three things seem pretty obvious so far, Best Buy will not have it until June 24th (even though you CAN get it from their website right now), it seems to have been delayed until June 10th in Canada, and it appears that all Borders have received at least one copy. If you have anything to add, please send it in.

  • No Trilogy dvds in Portugal, Italy or Ireland:
  • "There are no trilogy dvd's in portugal, as far as i've noticed in lisbon stores. not even in fnac stores (shame on them, they told me that they don't even know if it's comming in one store, and in another they told me that maybe next week). i've phoned other record stores, and some of them are waitting for dvd's, but you won't be able to get one 'till the end of this week/beggining of the next one."

  • The Trilogy dvd in Spain also includes the 3 track promo cd:
  • "Today I've bought the trilogy DVD in FNAC BARCELONA. Yesterday it had not already arrived. Just wanted to tell you (though I guess it might be no news at all) that the DVD I've bought is a package that includes a CD with three audio tracks from de DVD. I don't know if it is the same everywhere, just wanted to notice that. The "bonus" cd comes in a slim case and has the same cover than the DVD. Not bad at all."

  • Robert to perform (via satellite) with Junkie XL at the Pinkpop Festival on June 9th:
  • From Yahoo

Junkie XL Drafts Pals for Live 'Broadcast'

    By Paul Sexton

LONDON (Billboard) - Dutch producer/electronic artist Junkie XL, whose new album features guest vocalists such as Dave Gahan, Chuck D, the Cure's Robert Smith, former Republica frontwoman Saffron, and soul legend Solomon Burke (news), will perform live with some of the acts next week in his native Holland.

"On June 9 we're closing Pinkpop, which is the size of Glastonbury -- 75,000 people," Junkie XL mainman Tom Holkenborg says of the annual event in Landgraaf, 130 miles from Amsterdam.

"I'm going to perform with a live band and some featured guests from the album, and people who can't make it will be there by satellite link-up, like Dave Gahan and Robert Smith. Saffron and Solomon Burke are going to be there live, Grant Nicholas and Gary Numan still might be. Chuck D's going to be animated, and so is Peter Tosh, of course. We have a satellite link with the afterlife as well."

"Radio JXL -- A Broadcast From the Computer Hell Cabin," is due June 16 internationally via Roadrunner (North American release plans are not yet solidified). The Pinkpop performance will be cybercast on the artist's soon-to-launch online radio station, RadioJXL.com.

Holkenborg shot to international fame last year after bringing Elvis Presley (news) back to the pop charts with his JXL remix of "A Little Less Conversation." The first single from the new set, "Catch Up to My Step" featuring Burke, debuted Sunday at No. 63 on the U.K. singles chart.

  • And for all of the European fans looking for the vhs version of Trilogy, Eagle Vision has confirmed a delay in that release:
  • "There has been a delay in the issue of the VHS in Europe, but if your VHS player is able to play American videos (NTSC standard) then you should be able to purchase a copy of the VHS released in the USA through Amazon.com. The release date in the USA for the video is 3rd June, so you will not be able to purchase it on Amazon until after this date though.

  • Curespotting:
  • "Just thought I'd let you all know (if you haven't already heard) that our favorite band was mentioned twice in the new issue of Spin Magazine (July 2003) which has Thom Yorke on the cover. They first mention them on page 97 in reference to the up and coming band Stellastarr*. The article pictures frontman Shawn Christensen and states the following: "Boyish, dark, and moody frontman Shawn Christensen perfectly reflects this New York band's '80s-centric vision of the Cure playing Pixies songs but poppier. After only one EP, Stellastarr made their late-night talk-show debut on (urghhh) Last Call With Carson Daly". And they are also briefly referenced in the write up of the new Deftones album on page 105. The article say's that the band shares a fan base with Korn, Weezer and the Cure. Any mention is nice, but the article takes a turn for the worse when it talks of frontman Chino's Smiths obsession and mentions nothing of his clearly overpowering Cure obsession."

    (Thanks Mike K.)

"Those two guys can't stop talking about their idols : Mickaël Furnon, the leadsinger of Mickey 3D, mentioned in a recent isuue of the french magazine Paris Match, that as he was a fan of The Cure, he started writing songs very young. On the same page, Brian Molko of Placebo was asked how he explained their success in France ; here's what he answered : "The fact that I speak French is certainly very important. Like Depeche Mode, The Cure and PJ Harvey, Placebo explores the dark side of love. That's what the French appreciate, our romantic way of making music".

Hope that other fans did see those two programs :

1- in the credits of the french TV mag "Hits and Co" on TF1, "Lullaby" and Eagle Vision were mentioned ; suppose it was something about the "Trilogy" DVD release.

2- French TV France 3 broadcasted parts of the 2002 festival "Les Vieilles Charrues". This show ended with the studio version of "Lovesong". Did somebody knows what other Cure stuff appeared in it ?"

    (Thanks David)

  • Trilogy is out today in most of Europe, so make sure you get a copy or 5. And after you've been blown away by it and can compose yourself, send in a review or your thoughts & comments about it. If for some strange reason you are wavering on whether or not to get it, I promise you, the Pornography set alone is worth double what they're asking for it. : )
  • Also, if you find any reviews in your local newspapers or magazines, tv, radio, etc., please send those in as well. Thanks.

  • Trilogy out tomorrow in France:
  • "The Trilogy DVD will be available in France on tuesday (3rd june) and not today. Fnac stores, Virgin Stores and Hypermedia Stores will receive it tomorrow."

    (Thanks Jerome)

  • Also, don't forget that 'Perfect Blue Sky' is out today as well:
  • "On the negative side, today I popped into HMV Sunderland to pick up my copy of Trilogy (as I'd pre-ordered it). I knew something was amiss when the guy at the counter asked if I had been telephoned to say it had arrived. I hadn't been told (me being naive enough to expect something to be available on it's day of release!) and sure enough when he checked the computer they had received exactly zero copies. He suggested a problem with the supplier, could not say when it would arrive, and suggested I wait for a phone call. Sigh...

In better news, while in the store I purchased Junkie XL "Radio XL: A BROADCAST FROM THE COMPUTER HELL CABIN" because of course it features Robert on Perfect Blue Sky. What can I say, this is one awesome song! It does have a very 1980's feel to it, especially the drum sound. I listened to it in the car coming home and was amazed at Roberts guitar on this song, untold I got home and read the credits and realised I don't believe he plays guitar at all on it !!! Songwriting credits are "Music By:T.Holkenborg" and "Lyrics: Robert Smith" and I figure he'd have been credited for music also if he'd played guitar on it. Someone has got Robert's style down quite well.

If you really want to know how it sounds I can only say it carries the same mood as First Picture Of You by The Lotus Eaters, but slowed down a bit! Just my opinion of course.

If anyone's in any doubt about this record then I'd just like to say the rest of the songs seem equally as awesome on first listen, any fans of The Specials will certainly appreciate Never Alone (featuring Terry Hall) which was a complete surprise cos I had no idea he was featured, and Depeche Mode fans will of course love Reload which is pure Mode.

In a coincidental twist, I did see a review today on Planet Sound (Channel4 Teletext) of a single called Perfect Blue Sky, but it's by someone else and not JXL. Spooky though."

  • Curespotting:
  • "Aussie chat show Micalef Tonight had a really crappy take-off of the Cure performing Inbetween Days. it was a joke (obviously) -but not very funny nor was it anything like a Cure film-clip. the joke was: Micalef was in a Cure tribute band that supported Jimmy Barnes (ha ha)."

"Last night on Micallef they closed th show with Mecallif and his sidekick doing a costumed spoof of inbetween days. His sidekick has an uncanny resemblence to mr. tolhurst and Mecallif made up was a respectable mr. smith. Bonus marks for the graceful dancers also on the set."

"A national night-time variety show here in Australia called "Micallef Tonight" screened an interesting "tribute" to the Cure last night. The host, Shaun Micallef, occasionally prepares a skit where he comically performs an eighties song. This time he donned full make up and a wig to do "In Between Days." The band were all portrayed as looking like Robert, and about six or seven dancers were also made-up the same way."

"There's an advert for that new compilation cd "Dark side of the 80s" being shown on terrestrial (UK) TV. This features a guy in a 'gothicky' room watching the Lullaby video on TV."

  • A very Happy Birthday and Best Wishes to Simon Gallup. Cheers!

  • Some Trilogy thoughts:
  • "I got mine yesterday from Lasers Edge!!! It is stellar!!! (By the way, the folk at Lasers Edge were absolutely blindsided by this rush... for Cure to outsell DIE ANOTHER DAY and LORD OF THE RINGS, I think that says something for the power of the COF web site!!!.. they were very thankful for the business, and great to deal with!!) Some songs really blow you away, others are near album-versions..... highlights for me were the opening / ONE HUNDRED YEARS; PORNOGRAPHY; and the overall intensity of the Pornography set.... PLAINSONG was massive, and a great start to that set....LOVESONG and DISINTEGRATION seemed a bit "slow" for this event.... SAME DEEP WATER, HOMESICK, UNTITLED, AND CLOSEDOWN were all great sounding, and good video... excellent effects on HOMESICK.... For BLOODFLOWERS, the first and last cuts, OUT OF THIS WORLD and BLOODFLOWERS, sent chills..... thought WATCHING ME FALL was a bit less strong than the Dream Tour shows... THE KISS in the encores was INCREDIBLY well shot, great effects, added to the intensity of the song!!!

Overall impression.... WOW!!! Fantastic setlist (obviously), very well produced, great mood, awesome sound (very HEAVY on the BASS, kudos to Jason and Simon!), maybe not as "intense" as some of the recent shows from an energy level, but very "dark"!!!!

Maybe my favorite in the whole DVD is in the interview section when Robert comments that I want our next record to be the "heaviest, hardest album ever made!" and that without a doubt the Cure would get "DARKER" before they ever get 'LIGHTER"...."

    (Thanks Dave)

"I bought the dvd friday, and it is really great!!!! i'm so glad the cure did these shows, i wasn't there, i went to the hamburg concert a few days before. My favorite song on the dvd is homesick, the last time i heard it live was in heerenveen in 1989, so that was al long time ago. It is also great to hear a short term effect, i have it a few times live on tape, from the pornography tour, but i never see them play it live, so that was really great. And ofcourse siamese twins!!! I know that they want to play it rotterdam (2000) but they didn't because of some problems, so i finally see them play that song live also. I'm gonna love this dvd so much, i already see it 4 times this weekend, i have not been outside this whole weekend(and it is really beatiful wether here in holland)

THNX THE CURE FOR MAKING THIS DVD!!!!!! IT IS WORTH EVERY EURO IS SPENT ON IT!!!! AND ROBERT IS RIGHT THIS IS THE BEST LINE UP EVER!!!!!!!!"

    (Thanks Marco)

"I drove 3.5 hours to go to lasers edge today...they sold me two copies of the DVD....it was well worth the drive...so, if anyone wants it a few days early, I would go there..."

    (Thanks Chase)

"on my birthday (30.05.2003) i bought the dvd in the musicstore called "free record shop"(in Belgium) for €29. Perhaps it's too mutch but i had to have it. It's just great and again very intense!

i think they should go on for ever and ever. "

    (Thanks Bert)

"I'm from Italy, I went to a music shop yesterday and they told me the DVD will be out on 6 june here in Italy, but the announced release date was the 2 june. I wonder why it comes out so late in Italy?"

    (Thanks Rossana)

"The Trilogy dvd has been on sale since friday here in Groningen. I got my copy early in the morning en enjoyed every minute of it."

  • Eagle Vision has put up a clip of Prayers For Rain on their website.
  • (Thanks Joey)

  • Cure covers:
  • "I don't know if you have reported this before but I was round at a friend's house the other night and knowing I was a Cure fan he put on a twelve inch version of The Forest called Newforest by Slide. It was a good version with no vocal but the original track can be heard in the atmospheric mix. The version comes on a double A side with Cos I Wanna by The Hives. The record is released by Frontier records of London and there is a thank you to Robert Smith on the record. www.frontierrecordings.com"

    (Thanks Charles)

"Last night (May 31st) Pete Yorn did a small acoustic bit of Inbetween Days at his concert at the Joint in Las Vegas. It was funny to see more people singing along to that than any other song."

    (Thanks Sheri)
