  • The Cure WILL be playing in Greece on July 3rd even though Rockwave is cancelled:

From what it seems they will play on their own. "

Update: DiDi Music has confirmed this as well, and it looks like some of the other bands will be joining them.

  • "There's an interesting article on the BBC web-site about the history of the Glastonbury Festival. The Cure are also mentioned as being "big stars in 1986 " including an early picture of Robert and Simon.

"first there was the infamous christina aguilera/twisted sister combo... and lesser comparisons like sandra bullock and penelope cruz...

but now, just as the white stripes pass through toronto, the ultimate eye-dentical twins!!

  • A chance to win a free ticket to the Hyde Park show:
  • "I have one (standing) ticket left for the Hyde Park gig, as I bought it for a friend of mine that won't go after all. I could sell it. I could also try something completely different: I'll GIVE it away. However, I wanna know why someone wants it, what it would mean to them if they'd win it. In other words: write me an email (menni@wanadoo.nl) telling me what The Cure means to you. Please, make those stories long and personal. This way I'm sure it'll be received by someone who deserves it. We'll meet in or around the park and I'll give you the ticket there on the 26th or 27th (I'll be arriving from Holland on Friday). This is NOT a joke! Feel free to ask for my phone number to get the thing confirmed, if you want to. Lots of love to you all!"

    (Thanks Menni)

  • The official site has been updated with confirmation about the Rockwave festival being canceled.

  • Curespotting:
  • "From the June 14h, 2002 Entertainment Weekly:

    File Under...Next Big Thing

With the unexpected success of the Strokes, New York is suddenly crawling with fashionable bands that ape the sounds of the late-'70's underground. It's only natural, then, that the latest buzz band has wandered a step farther down rock's time line, tapping into early-80's post-punk. New York quartet Interpol - who've just released a wonderfully glum EP and will unveil their sure-to-be-fawned-over full-length debut in late August - tap into the sound of Joy Division, Wire, Josef K, early Cure, and other record-collection essentials. But it's really the strong melodies and moody background music that set Interpol apart - and could make them New York's next most-talked-about band. "It would be funny if it happened," says singer Paul Banks. "I'm just happy to be on a label [Matador] I've always loved. But that would be cool. I don't like working at a cafe that much."

    (Thanks rust)

"this was in a recent,(but not most recent) issue of "Guitar Gods". (or something like that.) It was an interview/biography on the Smashing Pumpkins, and their lead singer, Billy Corgan,(a musical genious) said something like, "Right now we are trying to do a sad-rock, cure like sound." Billy Corgan is a cure fan, another reason i like them so much!"

    (Thanks Danny)

"This is more than 2 months late, but i wanted to share with you anyway since it surprised me pleasantly:

This was taken from the last April issue of women's magazine "Marie Claire" (Mexican edition).

Not that i care about the stars' birthdays, but when i swept my eyes across the page i couldn't believe what i saw... then i actually READ it!

Am i wrong or everyone in that list but Robert and Andre Agassi are Hollywood stars? It was nice to see that Robert was listed, however i couldn't help keep on wondering to how many Marie Claire readers the name Robert Smith actually rings a bell... maybe more than i think or maybe there is a Cure fan within Marie Claire's editorial staff =) "

    (Thanks Agueda)

  • The Rockwave festival on July 1-3rd has been canceled:
  • "On Friday afternoon came the most horrible news ever. Rockcwave Festival 2002 that was going to take place in Athens 1-3 July is cancelled . This of course means that the CURE won't come, they were due to headline on the last day.Responsible for this are the mayor , the minister of transportation (since the festival was going to take place in the old airport of Athens), even the local police department said something . I wish you all enjoy the shows. Maybe they'll come after the festival gigs. There is always hope, right?"

You can read the official press release here.

    (Thanks Kostas)

  • The German magazine Zillo has a 3 page interview with Robert in their July/Aug. issue, and here is a summary of what was said (lots of interesting stuff):
  • "the main points from the zillo interview, the other stuff is nothing new -

    recording/songs:

    - solo album is done, has still to be mixed

    - at the moment, Robert favours to add it as a bonusdisc to the next cure album

    - band will go into the studio september-december with a possible release in spring

    - new album will be released on their own label, signing a deal with an american indielabel as distributor shortly

    - robert's songwriting has changed: more intellectuell ideas like where the birds always sing, the lyrics shouldn't be any longer about him

    - still mistrust about the new songs, as the more intellectuell ones are rarely his faves so far, not that convinced about the new stuff so far

    - but he has to sing them during rehearsels for the 1st time

    festivals:

    - rehearsels: early may + last week of june

    - best about festivals is all the stuff backstage including the chance to see other bands perform

    - between the festival gigs, they will go back to england

    - start in july due to the world cup still being played in june

    - festival setlists should change every evening + involve what kind of festival they will play so people won't be disappointed + they will perform a kind of set the audience at that particular festival expects - can be they already play some of the new songs, especially at zillo festival as their playing time there is longer than most of the other festivals

    - for the encore: rehearse some cover versions: 2 from the 70's, 2 from the 80's and 2 from the 90's."

    (Thanks Dennis)

  • Route of Kings ticket giveaway:
  • "UK readers may be interested to know that Planet Sound are running a contest to win tickets to all of the Route Of Kings concerts, obviously including The Cure's show. Access Teletext on Channel 4, page 451. The competition details appear towards the end of the subpages, today it was around page 10/10 if I remember correctly."

  • Some ticket info and more for the Budapest show:
  • "The Cure's hungarian gig will start at appr. 21.00 h, at the Nagyszínpad. Before the Cure concert The Mission will be playing, and a hungarian band called Sziami. The Cure has unfortunately only 90 minutes, at 22.30 they have to leave the stage... It will be appr. 60.000-65.000 people or so...the limit is 65.000, so i think it will be the biggest audience at a Cure gig in 2002. The tickets are on sale now.

    more info: www.diaksziget.com and www.sziget.hu

there's a daily ticket, it costs 3.000 hungarian forint / 11 US dollars

PS: please help me, i am looking for an austrian girl named 'BIANCA FUREDER'. She was mentioned in the Curenews 19. My e-mail is cureme@freemail.hu"

    (Thanks Cureme)

  • Curespotting:
  • "In the July issue of Alternative Press they did an article about the "Ten Essentail Albums from '85" and of course The Cure was involved! (how could they not be?) The website gives a sort of preview and heres what it says...

"We celebrate A.P.'s 17th anniversary with the Cure, the Smiths, Hüsker Dü, Rites Of Spring and six others who've inspired us from the summer of ?85 to the present."

Dashboard Confessional is on the cover and heres the link to the Alternative Press site: http://www.altpress.com"

    (Thanks Lindsey)

"Hey look what i found, I was looking for the new coldplay album on cdnow.com. and they have notes about the new single and here is what it says:

"The first single from their second album 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head', produced by Ken Nelson. Chris Martin admits to listening intently to The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen, even striking up a friendship with Ian McCullough, so expect some influence to pervade."

    (Thanks Ignacio)

    "From Spin Magazine, July 2002

MORE NEW MUSIC TO HEAR NOW by Jeffrey Rotter.

"Hot Hot Heat" by Knock Knock Knock (Sub Pop). Some retro new wavers hang themselves on their own skinny ties. While their peers lip-synch to Cure 45's, these Canucks take subtler cues from early 80's synth disco. It's not new wave worship; it's the sound of punk teaching itself to dance. "

  • Thanks to everyone who helped out with the festival questions over the weekend. I had a lot of questions about the Hyde Park tickets and why they haven't be sent out yet, and here's the answer:
  • "I also had trouble getting in contact with ticketmaster UK but finally did! they explained that the tickets would not be posted until late June. This is due to the fact that they will be souvenir tickets with a picture of the band on it or similar and ticketmaster have to wait until the promoters print them!!"

    (Thanks John)

"Ticketmaster are expecting souvernir tickets for the london show. this means the tickets will be sent out "in good time before the show" (they said about 10 days before the show. thats not really much time for some of us who are going to the other shows as well)."

  • Here's a link to that new Hultsfred festival compilation cd that featuers 'Inbetween Days'. Looks to be a regular version and not live from Hultsfred.

  • Yet another new compilation and a bit about Porl:
  • "There is a new 7 CD boxed set due out on July 2nd called "Like Ohmidgod!: The '80s Pop Culture Box." On Disc 4, accompanied by Night Ranger & Quiet Riot, you will find "Let's Go To Bed" by The Cure! http://www.towerrecords.com/product.asp?pfid=08122782392

This week on "Jump Start" -VH1's morning news & video show, there has been a story on Robert Plant's new album "Dreamland." There is a quick mention of our beloved Porl! In reference to Robert Plant's band lineup which includes "Plant main-stays Porl Thompson, blah blah..." (& they show a video clip of Porl playing guitar.) They have run the story 3 mornings in a row! So exciting to see Porl on VH1!!! They've also played the "Friday I'm In Love" video on several Friday mornings before 7am! The Cure are Everywhere and I love it!"

    (Thanks Jamie)

  • A bit more about Joseph Arthur:
  • "What a great addition to the line-up of Hyde Park this is! I've been fighting the urge to buy plane tickets to London (for financial reasons, only).

For those who are unaware of Arthur's work, it's soulful and beautiful, Gen-X without the whining, electronic without the lack of depth. In most of his concerts its just him and his acoustic guitar, so you get a whole new perspective on each song.

I'm sure most Curefans would enjoy his work!"

    (Thanks Jeff)

  • Curespotting:
  • "There is a show on MTV Germany called "Video-Clash" , where viewers can vote for songs by SMS. One of todays (June 11th) battles was betweeen the two "Spiderman"-songs : Chad Kroeger feat. Josey Scott - Hero and The Cure - Lullaby... The Cure lost 39% to 61% ... "

    (Thanks Benny)

"nothing special, just this:http://www.mydarkstar.com/eyeboyspast.htm was surfing the web and got on this silly site about all kinds of famous people with eyelined-eyes. if you click on Galleries you'll see Robert's name along with Bowie's name as original eye-boys. as if we didn't know already :)

  • For those going to the Sudoeste Festival, here's some travel info you might want:
  • "since some people had already asked me this, here's some info for people coming to sudoeste festival not by car, that might want to know how to get to zambujeira do mar from lisbon. i think you can catch a train from barcelona to madrid, and then a night train from madrid to lisbon. from lisbon you can catch a bus. here's the bus' schedules:

LISBOA - PRAIA ZAMBUJEIRA (235 Kms)

    departure - arrival - price

    - 7.30 h - 12.05 h - Price: 11.20 € (Frequency : Daily from: 15/06 to 30/09)

    - 10.00 h - 14.35 h - Price: 11.20 € (Frequency : Daily from : 01/07 to 31/08)

    you can also check: http://www.rede-expressos.pt/

however, when sudoeste festival happens they use to have more buses daily. at the time this is known, i'll send here the schedules. the festival promotion use to say that you can get there also by train, from lisbon to fucheira. i DON'T advise you to go by train, as when you arrive to funcheira you have to catch another bus to zambujeira do mar that will take you one more hour. going by bus from lisbon you will go directly, and it will take you for about 3 or 4 hours to get there. hope this helps whoever might need it. i'll send more info when i find out any."

    (Thanks Paulo)

  • 'In Orange' VCD review:
  • "Judging by some of the details on the back sleeve, it appears that this VCD originated in Malaysia. The packaging is very nice and official looking, essentially the same as the video version, from the packaging it seems that the VCD has been issued through Universal.

As for the actual movie: the picture quality is far clearer than video, although judging by a few things I noticed such as a green blur that occasionally passed across the screen on the 2nd disc, I definitely don't think this VCD has been produced using the original master. It's not as good as you would expect from a DVD of course, although saying that, the Greatest Hits DVD wasn't particularly amazing, especially Lovesong.

As far as the sound is concerned, the imprved sound quality was worth the £10 alone. Everything's crystal clear with no noticeable video hiss (I was listening to it reasonably loudly !) but it was a little disappointing to hear the odd pop and crackle here and there.

Overall I would say that if you have never seen In Orange, or your video copy is on the verge of collapse, it's well worth investing in a copy on VCD, if you have something to play it on that is !

As a footnote, while I was watching I remembered the REM DVD boxset that I've seen in the shops a few times. It's basically a boxset of all of their videos. How nice it would be if The Cure would put out a DVD boxset of In Orange, Play Out and Show. "

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

  • Curespotting:
  • "There is a site called "The Covers Project" (http://covers.wiw.org) that has the following lines as their "rules":

"Welcome to The Covers Project. We're building a database of cover songs (songs performed by an artist other than the original performer) with the intention of creating cover "chains."

So far, we have 18,234 songs (10,036 unique) and 7,313 artists catalogued. The longest "chain" we know about contains 92 songs. If you know of any cover songs, please help us out by adding them to our database (remixes need not apply). The add page also has links to every band we know something about, so feel free to browse that as well."

Now guess who starts the longest chain? The Cure.

They have a voting system that can tell their database if a cover is a real cover or not, because there are many mistakes in several of these file sharing softwares... "I saw a The Cure - (Don't stand so) close to me.MP3" once..."

    (Thanks BACO)

"my sister is a promotions coordinator for a radio station in sacramento. the station was throwing a concert with several performers, including pete yorn. for this particular festival she was in charge of guest relations for pete yorn (being his gopher, basically)...when she went into pete's trailer, she walked in on him singing along to the cure on his stereo....but, alas, she is not a cure fan, so she could not tell me what song it was, or if it was a cd or just a song on the radio."

    (Thanks Summer)

"i was surfing across the site (www.maidireweb.it) of an italian comic trio, the gialappa's band, which makes very funny comments about the world cup games, when i saw a mp3s download section and, in the rock page, there was "pictures of you (single remix)" downloadable!"

    (Thanks Pietro)

"on friday, at late afternoon, there was on the popular music chanell by satellite called viva+, a show about the 80s style and music. The Cure were mentioned, and there was a clip ( oh my god! on a hungarian channell!!) 'lullaby'. 13 years' memories were cry out...'

    (Thanks cureme)

I was listening to a festival radio show and they were talking about getting to the front row. Then a woman said: "I tried to get to the front row few years ago in Provinssirock (a Finnish festival) when The Cure was performing." This came from a Finnish radio channel 'Radio Mafia' and I'm not sure what festival they were in =P.

    (Thanks Ilmari)

  • The Cure get more press coverage in Hungary:
  • -The Cure were mentioned in the hungarian newspaper called Blikk in the theme Sziget fesztival again.

-There's a NEARLY 1 PAGE LONG AD' ON THE WEEKLY FRESHED COLLEGE BDTF NEWSPAPER, ABOUT THE CURE, INCLUDING WITH FULL BIOGRAPHY UNTIL THIS YEARS APPEARENCES, AND IT HAS A PHOTO WITH ROBERT FROM THE ERA 96:

    THE CURE

A '80-as évek második felének egyik legnagyobb európai tinédzser-õrületéért felelõs zenekar eredetileg Easy Cure néven alakult 1976-ban, mire azonban a három iskolatárs által életre hívott csapat 1979 februárjában megjelentette elsõ kislemezét, az Albert Camus munkái által inspirált Killing An Arab-ot, már simán csak Cure-nak hívták õket.

A néhány évvel késõbb erõs sminkjével és kócos frizurájával - a zenekar emblematikus figurájaként - magát igazi popsztárra kinövõ gitáros-énekes, Robert Smith és barátai ebben az idõszakban még fõként depresszív hangulatú, erõsen dark, goth dalokat játszottak, nem véletlen tehát, hogy a frontember egy ideig a hasonszõrû Siouxie and the Banshees-ben is pengetett.

A Smith körül állandóan cserélõdõ (több ki, majd visszalépõ zenészt is foglalkoztató) együttes hazájában elsõ igazi kereskedelmi sikerét '83 õszén érte el a Lovecats címû, bohókás, bõgõvel feldobott popdallal, míg a tengerentúlon egészen '85-ig kellett várniuk, mikor is hatodik, Head On The Door címû albumuk több száma is masszív sláger lett - elsõsorban a kollégiumi rádióknak köszönhetõen.

A következõ évben kiadott, addigi kislemezeket összegzõ Standing On A Beach révén aztán már igazi tömegek ismerték meg a kultikus státuszba emelkedõ zenekar addigi pályájának legfontosabb állomásait, s a pozíciókat csak tovább erõsítette a '87-ben piacra dobott dupla album, az eklektikus Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.

  • Cure covers:
  • "I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of discussion about covers so I thought I would would mention two that I've heard.

The Living End do an excellent rocking rendition of 10:15 Saturday night on their "it's for your own good" ep. The lead singer of The Living End also included Fire in Cairo on his desert island mix tape for a magazine.

Another Australian band called Area 7 do what could be the worst cover of Boys Don't Cry. It is a hollow sounding ska thing with a spoken nasal vocal that is probably best avoided.

There is also a band called Speedstar whose live cover of Close to Me seems to get a mention every time I read a gig review for them."

  • "Tonight (Sunday 06/02/02) while watching "Queer as Folk" on Showtime, the last scene was fairly hot and heavy and very romantic and wouldn't you know it.... suddenly you hear "love song" over all the suck face.

It was a nice point in the show and a nice song to use to end with. "

"The Cure as background music on RTL: On the saturday night time there was a 'Die 80 show' on the german tv called RTL. The Cure's lullaby was the background music long minutes time, during the program presented the huge changes of the late '80s, like the chinese Tienneman's slaughtering, Bush's visit in Germany, and Hungary opened it'sborder. It was a very memorable moment to feel these experiences again...oh, the 80s..........."

  • Curespotting:
  • "I was flicking through some of the new radio stations available through my cable TV provider and had to pause when I heard The Cure mentioned on BBC Radio Scotland. The show was called something like "Arts Review" or "Arts Critique" (sorry can't remember 100%) and it seemed like tonight's topic was bootleg culture and how it has come "overground" with the apparently official and legal release of the "The Best Bootlegs In The World Ever" album/s that have been mentioned on Chain Of Flowers (the presenter was talking in terms of albums, not one album).

Anyway, it would seem that I had missed the Kurtis Rush Vs Missy Elliot Vs The Cure track "One Minute Lovecat" by seconds. There were two guests in the studio, one bloke who just kept making strange noises, and a woman who did seem very interested in The Cure (I have no idea who they were).

The DJ asked what they thought of the song they had just heard (cue me realising that I had obviously missed it). The female guest said that she has always been a fan of The Cure's bassline that was used on the song (a "fan" of a bassline..??), that it was all she was actually paying attention to and that she thought it was the only worthwhile part of the song.
