  • Curespotting:
  • "This one suprised me. On the news section of the Simple Minds Dream Giver site (www.simple-minds.demon.co.uk) there is a track by track synopsis of Simple Minds new cover version album. In describing why they chose Bring On The Dancing Horses by Echo And The Bunnymen it said "With an album of this sort, Simple Minds felt it was extremely important to acknowledge a few of their 80's and 90's contemporaries. U2,The Cure and Depeche Mode naturally spring to mind, but another band that fell very much into this category was Echo And The Bunnymen. The song Simple Minds eventually chose was one of their biggest hits, Bring On The Dancing Horses.". "

    (Thanks Paul)

"In the July issue of a german Alternative Magazine called "Zillo", i read a Poem entitled "Hommage". The name of the author is Anja Rode from Bremen. The Cure related line reads as follows: I wanted to stop the time, as i suddenly thought about this wonderful man who sang a long time ago "17 Seconds, a measure of life..."

    (Thanks Chris)

"came across an interesting and surprising cure spotting. i am a former comic book fan and current graphic designer . anyway, it's understandable that i was looking through a fan's digital artwork gallery at comics2film.com basically, people send in their photoshop work where they create digital images of comic-book characters. mostof it is pretty amateurish and second-rate, but i came across an interesting one of the character shadowcat with the title "love cats" i included a link to the picture...

    http://www.comics2film.com/DCG/DispArt.php3?f_id=3892

thought it was kind of funny."

    (Thanks Andrew)

"I just saw a TV show on E in which they were doing a story on Paul Oakenfold. The Cure were mentioned with a very short clip of them. "

    (Thanks Stephen)

"I noticed this a couple of months ago, but I've been dragging my heels in sending this in.

On the Empire Sports Network, which is a channel available in Western NY and Southern Ontario, there is a sports show called "The Empire Sports Report", which reports on national, regional, and local sports. During this show, they have a short segment titled "The Sabre's Edge", which gives updates on the local NHL team, the Buffalo Sabres. Anyway, when I first watched it, I could swear I heard The Cure's "Coming Up" during the title sequence. I watched the show a couple of weeks later, and sure enough, they played it again. It's definitely "Coming Up", or to be more specific, a clip from the :35 to the :51 mark of the song."

    (Thanks SatrdyWait)

"Not a curespotting, more of a cure bonding. At work with the Chain of Flowers website on screen when a work colleague who's lived in Crawley all his life (and in his early 40s) asked if this was the current line-up of The Cure.

He goes on to explain that he was bestman at the wedding to the brother of Porl Thompson. Robert wasn't there he noted. On overhearing this conversation another Crawley explained that his grandmother knows Robert Smith's mum.

Very strange as neither seemed to be a Curefan and it turns out they both have a couple of albums. The first colleague remembers seeing them when they were Easy Cure somewhere in Crawley but he can't remember the name of the venue. He remembers The Rocket where The Cure played in their early career and is now a Frog and Firkin pub."

    LIGHTS, CAMERA, THE CURE

Contrary to popular belief, The Cure's 2000 album Bloodflowers will not be the last new material from the band. Robert Smith and company plan to record two new songs for a Cure greatest hits album that should be released before the end of the year. Fans will be able to monitor the recording sessions' progress via an online "Curecam" that will soon be operational on the band's website at www.thecure.com. The Cure's last live performance was at Denmark's Roskilde Festival in June, and no future live gigs have been announced so far.

    Another Dose of The Cure

As the typical Barbra Streisand story goes, “No, really, this is it. I'm done.” Yeah, right.

Despite having again suggested retirement following their last tour in support of 2000's Bloodflowers, The Cure have apparently decided to concoct some new (no doubt dark and emotive) tunes in the studio and keep the creative juices flowing.

On their official website, singer Robert Smith and band reveal they're working to enhance an upcoming anthology, stating, “It looks like we will be going into the studio very soon to record a couple of new singles for The Greatest Hits collection mooted for a Fall release.”

After more than two decades and a career that proved both pivotal and progressive in the ‘80s, Smith (along with bassist Simon Gallup, guitarist Perry Bamonte, keyboardist Roger O'Donnell and drummer Jason Cooper) is also planning to put together an additional B-sides collection for release sometime after.

Until then, fans can download “Pirate Ships,” a Wendy Waldman song Smith got his hands on and covered during his spare time in 1989 while working on one of the Cure's best works, Disintegration. Smith discovered the master dat while undergoing a “recent big clear up” and has posted it online.

Stay tuned for any news on another Cure "farewell" tour soon ... Maybe Barb can be the opening act.

THE CURE GET THEIR HITS OUT

THE CURE are compiling a 'GREATEST HITS' compilation, and have entered the studio to work on new material. According to a posting on the band's official website, www.thecure.com, The Cure will enter the studio "very soon" to work on a selection of new singles which will feature on the album.

The record is due for release in the autumn, and may be followed by a 'B-sides' collection also.

The Cure have dismissed persistent rumours that they are to split, and as well as working on new material, performed at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark earlier this month (July 1).

  • Cure on French compilation cd:
  • "I don't know if anyone told you about it already, but I have seen in a Fnac record shop (www.fnac.com) here in france a compilation album called "Tubes New Vawe" (several 80's music albums are out at the moment here) with 'boys don't cry' being the 1st of the 19 tracks of the album. I suppose it's the '86 version. It's a ULM©TV / Universal record."

    (Thanks Fabien)

  • Curespotting:
  • "on german tv channel 3 sat was a special called - sports = a product tonight - and during the closing sequence, boys don't cry was played... "

"On monday the 16 of july, the Belgian newspaper "Het Laatste Nieuws" wrote about this years Axion Beach Rock festival on the belgian beach of Zeebrugge. Because of the weather and the groups present, there weren't many people present this year... So the journalist wrote: "The two bands (Manic Street Preaches and K's Choice) coudn't help people thinking back to the other editions of the beachfestival when big names such as Massive Attack, Alanis Morissette, THE CURE and Iggy Pop were able to get the fans to come to the festival despite the wind and rain". Which brings back memories of that performances par Smith & co as night was falling on the beach. And just for once the fans weren't staring at the sea... "

  • Well I promised a big surprise for the end of our 5th Birthday Celebration, and I'm very happy to be able to keep that promise by giving you our interview with Robert Smith. Thank you once again to Robert for taking the time to do this, it means the world to us. And thanks to everyone else who helped with the surveys (part 3 has been delayed, but it will be here soon), the contest and to everyone who wished us well. I have a feeling that Year 6 will be even better than the last 5. : )

  • The Cure Won't Quit

    July 13, 2 p.m. ET, RollingStone.com

Despite the general perception that 2000's Bloodflowers was to be the Cure's last official effort, Robert Smith and the boys are heading into a U.K. studio to record two new tracks for a greatest hits album, due by year's end on Elektra.

Fans will be able to monitor the band's progress shortly via a "Curecam" online at www.thecure.com. Smith is currently mulling over the track listing for the album, which is not expected to extend beyond one disc.

The Cure regrouped to play the closing set at Denmark's Roskilde Festival in June, but have no concrete plans for further live appearances.

Just say "UNCLE BOB" when you call the box-office and you'll get your tickets at £15 each instead of £17. The number to call is 0208 591 9662. October may seem a long way away, but all signs indicate a sell-out by the end of July/early August.

"I just had an unexpected cure spotting tonight (7.14.01) while attending the echo and the bunnymen show in chicago. while the equipment was getting set up for the opening band, Like Cockatoos came on (yes, what a great shock!), and then while the equipment was once again getting ready for echo, 100 years came on. they also played joy division, etc. etc. but two cure songs in one night, i couldn't get over it. and by the way, the echo show was outstanding."

    (Thanks Melanie)

"Tonight (Friday 13th July) I was watching a programme called Banzai (a spoof of Japanese game shows), on the English terrestial TV channel, Channel 4. You had to bet on whether a bottle of talcum powder or a packet of noodles would fall off a vibrating tumble dryer first...and while this was happening they played the beginning of Close To Me! "

    (Thanks Celine)

"I was very surprised when the singer from queens of the stoneage played today his summerhits on "fm4", austrian radio ; he chose LOVESONG as the last track . every day in this summer fm4 have the rubrik "supersonic" in which always another played summerhits for an hour."

    (Thanks Thomas)

"I was listening to Spinner Radio today and when I selected the 80's alternative Robert Smith appeared in the welcome message: "Hello, this is Robert Smith from The Cure, you are listening Spinner Radio" Just a comment I want to share..."

"Last night I was watching The Evening Star, which is a sequal to Terms of Endearment and in the first half hour the characters Melanie and Bruce were lounging around in Melanie's room, Bruce in his underwear, and were discussing him being a future underwear model (HAA! like he has anything-sorry side note) and Just Like Heaven was playing in the background. Well that's all i needed to tell you... this was around 2 or 3 in the morning (right around my insomnia time) so it was quite entertaning to watch... the movie was about an older lady trying to find the love of her life in a younger man but then ends up with Jack Nicholson (WTF!) it was a screwy movie."

  • More Cureheads news:
  • THE CUREHEADS AT THE EDGE OF THE DEEP GREEN SEA.

"The Cureheads are proud to announce that they have been moved up the bill at The Rox On The Prom open air festival weekend. The Cureheads were due to play the small stage in St Annes Square in Bognor.

The promoters today telephoned The Cureheads and informed them that the decision has been taken to ask The Cureheads to headline the Saturday of the festival, on the main stage on the pier, at Bognor on August 11th. (Due to the fact that the festival Committee felt that The cure's music played live would add something special and moving to an evening by the sea ) This means that the cureheads will be onstage at 11.00pm in the evening. The last song played will be accompanied by a massive Fireworks display on the sea front.

BOGNOR ROX ON THE PROM is the biggest free festival in the south Of England. This free festival is a huge three day event which attracts crowds of 10,000 people to the front of the main stage each day & evening. There are displays of Art, Drama, Crafts, Music and a Funfair. For those people (especially from Germany) who have contacted us asking for details. Information on hotels, campsites ETC please visit the festival website : http://www.rox2001.org.uk/ "

"Minimalistix has covered A Forest. The single is not released yet (but will be soon). I'm not sure what to think of it... I do like the music part, but don't know what to think of the singing part... but it is no disaster.

Minimalistix are a belgium dance/techno group, who had a really big hit (Struggle for pleasure), and it was really shocking to here they covered the cure :) you can download their hit at http://members.tripodnet.nl/tpex/top.htm (number 16 in that list)"

"The Cure live in Glasgow 1984" concert on Spanish TV:

Last Sunday, july 8, the Spanish chanel "CANAL 33" (Sputnik TV) aired part of the "THE CURE LIVE AT BARROWLANDS" (Glasgow, U.K.,25/08/94) that contains: "Shake dog shake, primary, play for today, the walk, the caterpillar, giveme it, 10.15 saturday night and killing an arab". Excellent concert!! "

    (Thanks Alex Vitores)

"yesterday a tv musical program called sputnik showed the cure concert in the Barrowlands in 1984. the tv channel was canal 33 of catalunya and it reaches nearly all the country.it was 40 minutes long and a intro made by a musical critic long time cure fan was made. he was dressed like robert and made a short revision to the goth gold era. he explained that the cure albums are until today interesting comparing it to the siouxie and bauhaus albums which he said were anchored in the past. it was a bit stupid not to mention more album than the ones that were important to him (3imagboys, concert and 17 seconds which he mentioned as a masterpiece equally important as the ziggy stardust of bowie or berlin of lou reed,as a concept album. i agree with him with that but disintegration was nearly mentioned and a few videos were shown: Boys dont cry, casterpillar, the walk, ...he talked too much about his life and clothes, the goth style in spain and less of the cure era's which i think is stupid and a sign that tv won't accept the cure as the whole band that they really are. i don't say the man was also anchored in the past but he should have explained that the cure are still a band that can scratch our hearts with every single element of their music (something some people forget and don't feel the same nowadays). next week they will show a smiths concert, "another legendary band of the eighties" but dead! i hope people remember this point next time they hear spilt milk or charlotte sometimes!"

    (Thanks Ale)

"Watching the Australian Version of Big Brother on Saturday night, a so-called fashion expert was discussing the clothes worn by the most recent evictee. She had a habit of wearing off-the-shoulder jumpers. When asked if this trend could take off the fashion expert suggested it could. The host of the show then asked if it would be worn by males, to which the "expert" responded, "the only male that I know of who wore this style is Robert Smith of The Cure, and I think it was a bit effeminate". Shows what sort of taste he has, that style was worn in one of my favourite photos of the band."

    (Thanks Jo)

"Yesterday afternoon i was watching MTV, which is something i rarely do. But on a programme called 'Daily Edition' they gave us a glimpse of the Rosklide Festival. I coiuldn't believe it when i heard Watching Me Fall playing and Robert was being interviewed about last year's tragedy. It was a nice surprise to see him on MTV."

    (Thanks Paul)

"You can go to www.stevenseverin.com/faq.htm to know more about robert and steven's relationship: it seems that steven gave a copy of one of his lasts solo project 'visions' to Robert during the recordings of bloodflowers, but Robert didn't reply..("not even a thankyou")...and to the question if there could be a glove 2 project one day, steven replied he's considering 'glove 2001' just to annoy Robert.."

    (Thanks Marcello)

"The other night I was in Rodizio Grill, a pretty good Brazilian restaurant, and they happen to play contemporary Brazilian music. (not my favorite music, but the food is sooo good) Anyway, about halfway through the meal, a song sounded very familiar! I think I had heard of a brazilian artist doing a cure cover on COF, but I wasn't prepared for this! A Latin version of In-between Days! Very different, but very welcome! "

    (Thanks Cambria)

"I was watching Wimbledon the other night (in Australia) and "In Between Days" was one of the songs used as an outro when going to the commercial break. Not that exciting, but a small novelty none the less."

    (Thanks Luis)

"channel 4 (in the UK) showed the south park with the timmy and the lords of the underworld/phil collins at the lala-whatever it was episode last night and on the part where kurt loder is reporting for mtv news, robert is on one of the monitors behind him."

    July 5th

  • The official site has been updated with news about the "Greatest Hits" (slated for a Fall 2001 release), some new singles, "Special Things", b-sides, a P3 broadcast of Roskilde and more.

  • Some more big news from The Cureheads:
  • "We are planning a full scale US tour for october & dates are coming together nicely at the moment. We will confirm in August. It's hard to judge though how a US tour would be recieved in the present climate so we are going to stick to mostly small venues. We're still open to venue/club suggestions to fill in gaps around the present itinary.

We so far have dates booked in New York, New Orleans, LA, San Fransisco, Las Vegas, Miami and Oklahoma. New Orleans is looking like it will be a Halloween Special.

We had a fantastic time in New York in April and are really looking forward to this tour.

We've been asked also to Play in Japan @ The Pokemon Center in November, a strange request as the main reason behind the booking was to have "Gary Ash" playing with his band. ( Apparently Gary Ash is a Pokemon Charactor ).

The Cureheads will also play in Osaka."

In the meantime, don't forget to check them out on July 19th (9pm) at Gossips, Neale St, Off Dean St, Soho, London. £4 entrance.

    (Thanks Gary)

  • A correction about that Porl Thompson on drums story:
  • "Pete mentioned that he saw Porl Thompson playing drums with Roxy Music. That's true but Roxy Music's Porl Thompson is totally different person than The Cure's (or nowadays Robert Plant's band's) Porl Thompson."

    (Thanks Aku)

  • Curespotting:

    July 3rd

  • Here's an interview that Robert did with the Daily Roskilde (the festival newspaper):
  • - EMOTIONAL CLOSE -

Last year , the cure was to play the orange stage after Pearl Jam. Instead they found themselves in the middle of Smith 's worst nightmare ever as musician.

    - 'It was shattering. Just afterwords we tried to calm Pearl Jam down and then i grew totally numb. Police, ambulances noise and lights and screaming I just shut down...'

The cure didn't hesitate when asked to return and close the festival on the orange stage tonight

-'It won't be a greatest hit thing', says Smith of their only concert on this SUMMER.

-'Something more emotional's needed. We can't ignore last year when we stand on stage and that'll show in the set'

Except for roskilde the cure considers 2000 their best tour ever and their first without internal strife. Earlier however Smith worried they might be growing too old or repetitive.

-'I never thought we'd stick around 20 years. But on tour i found we were still relevant to our FANS. And that's a trust i 'll never betray...'.

    ' roskilde daily Sondag 1 juli 2001'

    (Thanks Fabrice)

  • So, is anyone interested in the COF Birthday Contest? Are the questions too hard? Not interested in the prizes? The response so far has been underwhelming to say the least. Please let me know if you are having problems and I'll see if I can correct them. Thanks.

  • Tim Pope on MTV2:
  • "I just noticed on the mtv2 website that tim pope will have a directors cut episode on 7/25... i don't know any specifics about times and such, but no doubt the cure will be a topic of interest in the hour interview/discussion..."

  • Curespotting:
  • In the July issue of the Illinois Entertainer Chris Hall (singer of Stabbing Westward) says:

"the quieter kids who aren't in the pit, who are the other 90% of the room, seem to be our true, core fan base, and the people we are naturally drawn to....When I talk to those kids after the show, they're the ones who say, 'Your music helped me' or 'Your lyrics have touched me.' When people say that to me, it makes me think of the things I would have said to Robert Smith or Morrissey."

    (Thanks Lana)

"I wasn't at the Roskilde Festival (it was simply completely impossible for me to go...) but I went to the Werchter Festival in Belgium (where The Cure headlined last year).

My 3 american guests and myself saw (just a few names of the 50 bands playing here:) Deftones, Tool, Fun Lovin' Criminals, Hooverphonic, Stereo MC's, Ben Harper, Black Crowes, Beck, Sting, Tom McRae, Suzanne Vega, George Thorogood, Reprazent, Stereophonics, PJ Harvey, Placebo, Faithless and - headlining the same time when The Cure was playing Roskilde : Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music and... Porl Thompson on drums.

Great concerts, very nice weather, good atmos, cool festival.

(Porl will also be in Belgium in August, playing with Robert Plant in his new band.) "

    (Thanks Pete)

"At the Thomas and Mack, here in Las Vegas, they have a collage of big name groups that have played at the stadium. Part of the collage was the cover of a program with Robert from the Swing Tour (I of course, was in the audience that night) -- adorned in his Las Vegas Thunder Hockey Jersey."

They used to have his picture, from the concert, in a large (6ft.) cabinet, but have since remodeled (rats!)

  • Looks like some of The Cure's performance at Roskilde will be on the radio tonight:
  • "All you who weren't at the Roskilde gig, some of the concert will be on at www.dr.dk - at the website go in under HØR RADIO and click on P3. It should start on 23.00 CET, but maybe earlier I'm not sure, so be there in time!"

Update: The broadcast is over. They played Out of This World, Watching Me Fall and The Kiss.

    (Thanks Søren)

  • The P3 festival site has a 10 minute interview with Robert that was done a few hours before they played Roskilde. How Robert remained professional and courteous with these questions, I'll never know. : )

  • Cure on Pay TV in Australia:
  • "On 30/7/01 at 8:30pm (Australian time) there will be a 1hr live show of 'The Cure - Live at Barrowlands' (It's about time they showed it here!!). This is on Foxtel Pay TV on the channel 'Music Max'."

    (Thanks Greg)

  • Some pretty big Cureheads news:
  • "The Cureheads have been asked to appear on a VH1 USA quiz show called "Cover wars". The program will be recorded soon and shown in late October. Robert has given his blessing for The Cureheads to perform a couple of The Cure's songs. The formal request will be from the show's producers & go through BMG. "

The band will also be releasing their debut single "Missing The Rain" very soon. It will include the title track, "Being You" and "Sister Suicide".

    (Thanks Gary)

  • Cure Cover:
  • "Naimee Coleman's album "Bring Down the Moon" featuring her version of "Love Song" is out now in Ireland, Britain and Japan, with releases in other countries likely over the next few months. There is talk of the track being released as a single in Australia - a video was shot and it was due for release in the UK and Ireland during 2000 but after sliding from July to November, the planned release was finally cancelled.

The "underground" Brothers in Rhythm remix you mentioned is available to buy on the B side of the 12" format of her current UK single, "My Star", which is on release now in the UK. The main track "My Star" was written by Phil Thornalley and both the CD, vinyl and cassette formats feature a Tin Tin Out remix of My Star."

    (Thanks Neil)

  • Phil seems to be pretty busy these days:
  • "Saw the Phil Thornalley mention on todays news section - re. "Natalie Imbruglia" - there's an English dance group called Zero 7 who have released a blinder of a debut album recently called Simple Things and one Phil Thornalley gets credit for playing Bass on one of the tracks. "

    (Thanks Ronan)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I ran across a cure reference a few weeks ago that i'd been meaning to report: In issue #4 (a kiss before dying) of the amazing KABUKI comic series by david mack, one of the characters (Akemi, yay!) has written a series of notes to her psychiatrist that appear to be quite arbitrary. However, as the story unfolds the notes are placed together to form a well thought out message, and in the middle of it all > "I've been looking so long at these pictures of you that I almost believe that they're real" - The Cure.

so yeah! the story itself is emotionally cerebral and (dare i say..) can easily be paralleled to many of robert's lyrics.

Definitely worth checking out, beautifully crafted storytelling and art and a cure reference to boot!"

    (Thanks Jajojead)

"I was at the Shoreline Amphitheater in San Jose CA yesterday (seeing Radiohead!) and there's a picture of Robert Smith from when the Cure played there in June 2000 (that I was also attended!!) on the little walkway they have there. I walked by it three times which made it an even more wonderful night!!"
