"El Comercio" Magazine TV Mas # 479 (Feb. 14th,  2000)

By César Gutierrez

ROBERT CAME TO MADRID, WITHOUT ROUGE, EYELINER PROTECTED BY DARK CLOTHES. HE
SINGS - WHISPERING, IN SECRET- BUT OVER ALL , HE SPEAKS PROPERLY: HE IS AWAY OF HIS
LEGEND.

Just like in london or amsterdam, here (Madrid) everyrnight calls an ignition; you don't have to wait till weekend to
burn the city. It's monday  and in Madrid there are open bars in the Atocha street, more than in the holly city  of
Rome. In Madrid a stranger is a native, it is well known. Robert Smith, great stranger, have a room on the
Villamagna hotel. Last night he was sumerged in the CASA PATAS -flamenco that shocks the whole Chueca
Square, Malasaña, So much!!!
According to Diego Manrique, from "El Pais" robert was seen in DEJATE BESAR (let you kiss) , Elena Cabrera
from "El Mundo" and "Rock de Luxe" smith will come without make up. Elena took me here, (if you want you
can make questions)she told me. In Madrid a stranger is a native. I told her: It's OK (I lied: i don't have anything
to ask). In Madrid a beautiful journalist takes you to an interview and speaks for you. Then he appears!!! walking ,
levitating, a guy who looks like Smith. very pale, and it seems the one from THE CURE, the one from the famous
Tim Pope videos, the one from those posters in Lima, the one from my old tshirts, i bought in the Persia Store in
Lima Miraflores.

He is the man said to me  Aldo Linares, an arequipean poet who lives in Madrid, I just can see a little fat, with
shaking arms, it's funny being in front of the only one Robert Smith that is not merchandising; floating hair, and
spreading over his pink pale face. His eyes very damaged from the rain.
"last night i drank"; he says. What a funny thing: this Robert Smith speaks. The lament of his voice is real, his
sick is real, His left hand, his golden ring, his hands sunk over his hair, his eyes,...Elena and Aldo make questions,
i just observe.

Q. You said when you were 40 The Cure will stop, and Kiss me (3) would be the last album. Why do we have to
believe you now?

A. we always make a record as if it were the last one. Bloodflowes is so intense  that i just can think in the end, that
will arrive anyway. 3 years ago started making solo songs, but if i want  to make cure stuff, i won't denied it, it's
funny

Q When did you start to make BLOODFLOWERS?

A. April 1998 , i wrote the first song . i didn't have any idea about what wind of songs would take part of the album,
beacuse we made so many . At the same time i made these cure songs, i made some for me . i needed good songs
for the album before the fall of 1999.

Q Any special mood  to make this album?

A No but i was in the search of lyrical songs. Perhaps this was the mood of the record. More than ten years has
passed since Disintegration (89) and finally i can say it is biographical, maybe in Bloodflowers there is the same
mood.

Q Was it difficult to make it?

A No, but i think you can see the influence of all the years gone , it must be that i am going from 39 to 40 and i
found signs in the things than before, this record must be part of a trilogy , that begun with Pornography (82)
followed by Disintegration(89), its a little bit my continuing biography, grabbing it was not very difficult, maybe i
was more conscious on the meaning of getting bored . I found there were aspects from my life has nevr change .
When i pass from 29 to 30 i tried so much to live like before, but i almost kll myself. Now i enjoy beiing me. I'm
conscious that i don't have so much time.

Q Was Pornography a biographical album?

A Maybe i think with 17 seconds and faith are images of me, a very young man then. Yes i think Pornography
showed part of my life, just like Disintegration does. They were opposite but they needed each other to take
form. i don't know so much about music but i can recogniize diffecrences between both. About quality.

Q But are you conscious of so many people getting old, with your music and take it as a soundtrack of their
lives?

A yes because i know people still there than when i was 15 years old. I felt attracted by  very special people and i
understand. It occurs the same with everybody else. Specially young people, thenegative side of this , comes when i
want to leave THE CURE, i found so many pressure asking me not to do it,  and it comes from young people. It's
like a shock in a normal world with normal situations, if i stop, so many people will feel upset, it's better to learn,
travelling.

Q Pressure, upset. the twp size less side and 6 kilograms more in the recent life of THE CURE

A yes so much pressure , because i think that my last records have been great, but nobody listen to them.
Journalists didn't like it, even fans, they were hungry with it , were waiting something different, while i was thinking
i have been done great songs. Anyway the important point is The Cure invented something . I'm so happy as a
creator, although commercially don't , but i don't want to live copying to myself. As a creator , i have to make good
records, and have to ask people to forget the past , in thepast i did it well, and now  still want to do it well.

Q Wild Mood Swings was a bad record!!!
A. You are the only one who thik like this. the mistake could be two songs like Gone and Round & round, but it's
one of my top 5 fav Cure Records.

Q Will you and Mary have a child some day?
A. No since the begining we decided it, and never tried this theme again. I wouldn't stand  bringing a child to this
world, because i have a whole feeling about futility of living . I have 21 nephews and nieces,  , so i'm always
surounded with childrens, Being in southpark make me be accepted in their world.

Q What is the biggest lesson you have learned?
A.  In these days i know when to say stop!!!

But he didn't stop: HE says he doesn't listen THE CURE He listen "Ambient", read "Ian Banks" wacht "The
Cohen Brothers" and is proud of his Jimmy Hendrix cover, to whom he considers and admires over all. HE said he
is obsesed by the holes  in the human bodies.

Curious: i am in front of Robert Smith , after taking him in my t shirts, in Larco (Lima) And then i saw him going
away, levitating. He goes away like the parfum of  the Nirvana (Lima), just like the Rimel, Rouge from NO
HELDEN (Lima), So far away in a nebulous street (in Peru).

Do you remember those pins over your clothes? Are you still dreaming with the spiders? Miss Monica Villalobos
from "El Comercio", never took a picture, in front of Robert Smith, the one who breath, nothing so familiar like his
look, his eyes without eyeliner, bring all the eighties rain. Dark and Black, travelling in the little wave rolling his
skin.
