Attorney General Releases Interim Report on Anti-Arab Hate Crimes

(SACRAMENTO) - Attorney General Bill Lockyer today reported that the number of anti-Arab hate crimes under investigation by six major California jurisdictions in December and January has declined from nearly 10 a day to under one a day since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

The cases involve reported hate crimes against Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, Afghan Americans, Sikhs, South Asians and others mistaken for Arabs or Muslims.

To assist in developing effective measures to combat hate crimes and foster tolerance, the Attorney General has asked local jurisdictions to regularly report preliminary numbers on anti-Arab hate crimes. The survey began with six major jurisdictions and has been expanded to 10 other areas. Additional jurisdictions may be added later.
