Discrimination in Non-Federal Employment

California's primary law prohibiting discrimination in employment, as well as in housing and all places of public accommodation, is the Fair Employment and Housing Act. In creating the Act, the legislature declared, as the public policy of this state, that it is necessary to protect and safeguard of the right and opportunity of all persons to seek, obtain, and hold employment without discrimination.

Moreover, the legislature has recognized and declared that your right to seek, obtain, and hold employment without discrimination is a civil right. The Department of Fair Employment and Housing is the state agency charged with enforcing the provision of the Fair Employment and Housing Act. They may be contacted at:
