VIOLENCE SUPPRESSION PROGRAM
The Violence Suppression Program was created in October 1994 to focus on the investigation and apprehension of violent repeat criminal offenders who possess or use illegal weapons, firearms or explosives during the commission of a crime. The program provides statewide leadership, coordination, expertise and resources to combat the growing problem of violent crimes being committed by suspects using illegal weapons.
This program also provides assistance to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies by establishing investigative task forces and/or strike forces in violence-prone metropolitan centers of the state, with responsibility for conducting, supporting and coordinating multi-agency and multi-jurisdictional investigations concerning the possession and use of illegal weapons by violent repeat offenders; conducting investigations and assisting law enforcement personnel with targeting, identifying and apprehending violent career criminals and removing their weapons from the community; investigating and apprehending criminals responsible for trafficking in illegal weapons and/or in possession of caches of illegal weapons, firearms or explosives; and providing analytical research and support to law enforcement personnel who concentrate their efforts on violent criminals.
The program's strategic case development, investigations and apprehension of career criminals have proven extremely effective in combating the problem of violent crimes being committed in our society.
