Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement

TASK FORCE PROGRAMS

The Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE) operates and participates in task forces that have specific regional responsibilities. BNE works through regional task forces and special task forces.

Regional Task Force Program

Recognizing the need of local jurisdictions for a concentrated effort against drug traffickers, BNE initiated a regional task force program in the mid-1970s.

The program began informally in 1976 with the Sacramento Heroin Impact Program (HIP) and became formalized in the Central Valley in 1977 with the establishment of the Fresno and Madera Task Forces.

Each task force is supervised by a BNE Special Agent Supervisor under the direction of the BNE regional office in whose region the task force operates. Larger task forces are supervised by two Special Agent Supervisors. Local agencies provide officers and additional resources. Each task force is governed by a council made up of the local chiefs, sheriffs, district attorneys, chief probation officers, and the BNE Special Agent in Charge in whose region the task force operates.

Special Task Force Program

Over the years there have been a number of special task forces established to combat the drug problem that did not fall within the Bureau's ususal criteria for regional task forces. While BNE participates in these task forces with the assignment of personnel, these units, for the most part, are managed by an agency other than BNE.
