Fingerprint Rolling Certification Program

California law requires manual fingerprinting for criminal background checks to be performed by a person certified by the state Department of Justice. The certification number issued must be used by the certified fingerprint roller as soon as it is received.

Individuals interested in being certified to perform fingerprint rolling for licensure, certification and/or employment purposes should an application to the California Department of Justice. All applicants will be required to submit fingerprints for a state and federal criminal offender record information background investigation. Fees for certification as a fingerprint roller total $81.

State law makes an exception to the mandatory certification requirement for law enforcement personnel and state employees who have received training for applicant fingerprint rolling and have undergone a criminal offender record information background investigation.

If you have questions about fingerprint background checks, see Fingerprint Submissions for Applicants and Applicant Agencies. The Fingerprint Rolling Certification Program addresses only the training and certification of fingerprint rollers.

If you need an application packet by mail or have questions about being certified for fingerprint rolling, contact the program at:
