Charitable Trusts

Many Californians make generous donations to charities each year by volunteering time or through their checkbooks. This web site offers information to assist you in evaluating solicitations and choosing wisely when responding to charities and commercial fundraisers who must register with the Attorney General's Registry of Charitable Trusts and report financial activities annually.

By searching the charities database, you can see if a charity is registered and reporting its activities as required by law. You also now will be able to see if a commercial fundraiser working for a charity is registered and what kind of fundraising activities are being reported by searching the commercial fundraiser database.

Beginning July 1, eligible nonprofit organizations may hold fundraising raffles under certain circumstances. Learn more under Raffles on this site.

As the legal overseer of charities that do business in California, the Attorney General works to protect the interest of all public beneficiaries within his jurisdiction. The Attorney General may conduct investigations and bring legal actions to protect the assets of California charities and insure the assets are used for their intended charitable purposes.
