The Interceptor is a network monitoring tool consisting of
two interacting components; the network trap layer
and the monitor applet.
The network trap layer installs hooks in the network libraries for calls related to establishing connections or sending and receiving connectionless network data. When a packet in transit is detected, the trap decides if the packet should be accepted or not. This decision is made by checking a table for an actions matching the packet. If no action is found, a dialog is presented for finding out what to do.
When a decision is made on what to do with the packet, the monitor applet is notified and the monitoring taskbar icon is updated accordingly. A green arrow for accepted packets and a red cross for rejected packets. A green arrow with a red cross means that there are several packets in the direction of the arrow of which some are accepted and some are rejected. The arrow pointing "up", away from the base, indicates outbound traffic and the other inbound. Arrows are gray when no packets are detected.
