DiveCalc History

I first wrote DiveCalc for the PalmOS in 2001 for my Senior Project in college. I became a NAUI-certified Open-Water SCUBA Diver in the summer of 1998 and always had an interest in diving. I also wanted my Senior Project to be something interesting (and good) - not just another boring database program or something.

I made a few modifications to DiveCalc and released it on the Internet at http://scubatools.narced.com around January 24, 2002, and it quickly became a lot more popular than I expected - getting hundreds of downloads per month and from all over the world!

Then, the Sharp Zaurus was released and I quickly bought one. I always wanted to port DiveCalc to the Zaurus, and tried to do it in Java at first. That effort failed, partly because there was no real motivation, and partly because I wasn't as familiar with Java as I was with PocketC or C++. Then the Sharp Developer's Challenge came along, offering a free SL-5000D Zaurus, and... here's DiveCalc for the Zaurus!

Have fun and Dive Safely.
