Software Update:
SL-5500 System ROM and Synchronization Software Update

This page provides complete instructions for downloading and installing the latest ROM Update and Synchronization Software Update for the Zaurus SL-5500. The System ROM and Synchronization Software update provides software enhancements, new functionality, and expands functionality of your current software version.

The supported operating systems for this update are as follows: Microsoft® Windows® 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional.

Installation Instructions


Intellisync Synchronization Software Update
Note: If you are using Qtopia desktop, skip to the Qtopia Sychronization Software Update section.

1. Download the Intellisync setup program

  •  Download the setup program (below)
  • 2. Uninstall the current Intellisync software.

  •  Execute the setupi.exe file. This will uninstall the current version of Intellisync.
  •  Follow the on-screen instructions and reboot the PC when prompted.
  • 3. Install the updated Intellisyc software.

  • Execute the same setupi.exe file. This will install the current updated version of Intellisync.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions and Reboot the PC when prompted.
  • An Intellysinc setup box will appear after you reboot your PC.
  • 4. Configure Intellisync.

  • Click on Synchronization Options and configure them with your synchronization preferences.
  • Refer to the User Manual for detailed instructions.
  • 5. Proceed to the Zaurus System ROM Update

    Qtopia Synchronization Software Update

    1. Download the Qtopia setup program.

  •  Download the setup program (below)

  • 2. Uninstall the current Qtopia software.

  •   Execute the setupq.exe file. This will uninstall the current version of Qtopia desktop.
  •  Follow the on-screen instructions and reboot the PC when prompted.

  • 3. Install the updated Qtopia software.

  •  Execute the same setupq.exe file. This will install the current updated version of Qtopia.
  •  Follow the on-screen instructions and reboot the PC when prompted.
  • Zaurus ROM Update program

    1. Backup the programs and files on the Zaurus
  •  This step can be skipped if you do not want to backup your documents, applications or settings on the Zaurus.
  •  You will need an SD or CF memory card to backup installed applications and settings.
  •  Insert a CF or SD card into the Zaurus
  •  Tap on the Settings tab, and then tap on Backup Restore application.
  •  On the Backup/Restore screen, tap on Backup, select the card for backup (SD or CF), then tap Start.

  • 2. Backup of documents: This step can be skipped if you do not want to backup your documents on the Zaurus.

  • Place the Zaurus into the docking station with the unit powered on
  • Select the File Transfer option of the synchronization software (Intellisync or Qtopia), to transfer the files to the PC.
  • 3. Download the System ROM setup program.

  • Download the system ROM setup program (below)
  • 4. Perform the Zaurus ROM Update Program

  •  Confirm that you have at least 16MB of available storage on your Zaurus by going into the System Info application on the Applications tab (1st tab)
  •  Click on the Storage Tab
  •  Confirm that you have at least 16MB of Internal Storage available.
  •  If you have less than 16 MB of storage on your Zaurus, perform a full reset and complete the startup wizard.
  •  Turn the Zaurus on and place the unit into the docking station. Attach the AC Adapter to the docking station. Execute the SetupZ.exe program and follow the on screen instructions.
  • 5. Perform a Full Reset on the Zaurus

  •  After the System ROM update is complete (Green LED turns off), perform a Full Reset on the Zaurus.
  •  Refer to the User Manual for details.
  • 6. Restore the programs and files to the Zaurus

  •  Restore any programs and settings using the Backup/Restore application.
  •  Restore any files saved on the PC using the synchronization software (Intellisync or Qtopia).
  • System ROM Update for Mac and Linux Users
    Note: The system ROM update process will require a 32MB or larger CF memory card. The CF card must have the FAT16 format.

    1. Backup Zaurus programs or files:
    This step can be skipped if you do not want to backup any files or data.

  •  Launch the Backup Restore application on the Settings tab
  •  Select backup in the Backup/Restore window, CF in the Media window, and tap on the Start button
  •  Backup any other documents or files using the File Manager application on the Installation CD - Note: Linux users can backup PIM data by synchronizing with Qtopia desktop for Linux. Qtopia Desktop for Linux can be downloaded from the Trolltech site.
  • 2. Download the system ROM update.

  •   Download the OSPACK file (below) to a directory on your PC.
  •  Transfer this file from your PC to the root directory of your CF card.
  • 3. Perform the system ROM update.

  •  Insert the CF card into the CF slot on the Zaurus.
  •  Connect the AC adapter to the Zaurus and verify that power is supplied. WARNING: THE AC ADAPTER MUST BE USED THROUGHOUT THE SYSTEM ROM UPDATE. If the AC adapter is not used, the device may not perform as expected.
  •  Open the battery compartment lid but do not remove the battery.
  •  While pressing the [C] and [D] keys, push "FULL RESET" button once (using the sytlus tip). "FULL RESET" button is located on the lower right side of the battery compartment. When successfully pressed, the green LED (with "mail" symbol print) and orange LED (with "battery" symbol print) will turn on. When these LEDs are turned on, the system ROM update is in progress.
  •  WARNING: DO NOT ABORT, or UNPLUG THE AC ADAPTER WHILE THE LEDs ARE ON. Aborting or unplugging AC adapter during the update may cause fault, or damage affecting the ZAURUS.
  •  After approximately 3 minutes, the LEDs will turn off. When turned off, the System ROM update is complete.
  • 4. Perform a Full Reset.

  •   Push the "FULL RESET" button using the stylus tip.
  •  Restore the battery door and slide the battery replacement switch to "Normal Operation"
  • 5. Restore any data or files that were backed up in Step 1.

    Downloads


    Intellisync (Outlook®) users must download both the setupi.exe file and the setupz.exe file to complete the update.

    Qtopia (non Outlook users) must download both the setupq.exe file and the setupz.exe file to complete the update.


    SetupI.exe File: Download (.exe 6.2M)
    This file is the setup program for installing the updated Intellisync synchronization software.


    SetupQ.exe File: Download (.exe 4.2M)
    This file is the setup program for installing the updated Qtopia synchronization software.

    SetupZ.exe File: Download (.exe 16.9M)
    This file is the setup program for updated the System ROM on the Zaurus.




    Or you can download the following file which will launch your CD Burner software and create a CD from which you can then install the System ROM Update and appropriate sychronization software from the CD.
    Note: You must have a CD Burner to use this download.


    updatecd.iso File: Download (.iso 58M)
    This file contains the setup program for installing the updated Intellisync synchronization software and appropriate sychronization software.





    Linux Users should download the following OSPACK file and follow the above instructions to install this ROM to the Zaurus.
