Summer, 2000 A Piece Of My World by ERIC P. AVILA a.k.a. Digital E On Style i try to gear my sound for the dancers-the ones on there feet pumpin there fists. i try to give them ups downs breaks climaxes anything to keep them in the mood to groove. i want the people at the parties i play at to have that "this is the best fuckin rave i have ever been to" feeling. What's in a name the name digital e well...it has more than one meaning. the truth is i didn't come up with the name, some of my friends did. jimmyzimms (tct)and a few others (who later booked me for my first party lite brite)where kickin it and started to describe the feelings that they felt when i played. they said that it felt like ecstasy, they said it made them want to dance and it gave them that euphoric mind state and then, BOOM! the music would take them even higher. hence digital e. I loved it so that was that. On Music i have always it seems to have been involved with music in some way or another. it started when i was twelve with the school band. from there i took up electric guitar and got involved with the punk scene. that's where i fell in love with the underground and as i got older (at that time i was 14 years old) i watched the music change from all guitar punk to a half techno-punk sound (like the pixies ) and then to techno as it is today, the first party i played at was called lite brite witch took place on february 19, 1999. i played along side dj ryan dj glow dragn'fly all of witch are now xtort residents. On Liquidcafe Now i have teamed up with Paul Gordon and liquid cafe. i feel at home at Liquidcafe. Paul and i seem to feel the same way about the music, plus i love just being able to kick it and talk -- Paul's deep, Paul's real. i don't always have to be a dj around him and i like that. watch for future liquid cafe events....chances are i will be there. Plus i will be playin upcoming versatile entertainment parties also. so watch for those too! Philosophy my attitude about life is this; i didn't asked to be here but there is nothing i can do about that now so i'm not going to just blindly bump along, i am going to take this life and get in the driver seat and live my life to the fullest and experience as much as i can before the ride is over. i'm also politically outspoken. i'm about endless boundless FREEDOM i am pro-choice ON EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!fight censorship!!! i am opposed to the conservative right, but i also do not agree with the left. i am opposed to a fascist nazi monarch system where one rules all and where morals are based on out of this universe, out of touch intrinsic idealism. But i am also opposed to a collective socialist system where all-rule-all and morals are based on subjective what-we-most-agree-upon-at-the-moment mentality, because it doesn't work. all can't rule all! the only way for this system to work is for it not to work! let me explain, if there is something to be decided someone has to act but for one to act he/she breaks the all-rule-all system and what YOU REALLY HAVE is a very well disguised fascist monarchy where one rules all but pretends like he/she doesn't! i believe in an individual social structure where each person is his own ruler. and his/her kingdom starts at the deepest and complex fathoms of the mind and ends at his/her living flesh and blood where no other can trespass. i believe in PLUR, plur is the morality that makes freedom for us all possible. Peace- peace within yourself gives you the open mind to accept things and others as they are. and to learn from it. Love- you must love yourself before you can understand and love others. if you love yourself then love has value and your love for others will be stronger. Unity- unite the whole human race by acknowledging each individual. to unite all you must accept all. unity is diversity. Respect- this is bottom line , peace+love+unity=respect or respect=peace+love+unity. to respect all life you must respect your own life. if you do not respect yourself chances are you don't care about anyone or anything else either. Know The Facts by BILLY LANE FEW YEARS AGO, if you heard the term "Jungle Music" you'd think of it as a slander putting down a genre. Never would you think of what is now the fastest growing form of electronic music since the early days of Techno. So what exactly is Jungle? Where did it come from? How long has it been around? In this brief article, I'll try to answer the most frequently asked questions regarding Jungle and hopefully clear up some false rumors. First of all, the terms Jungle and Drum 'n' Bass have no difference. We are talking about the exact same thing. To fully understand the reasoning behind the two terms requires basic knowledge of the history of this particular style of music. But I must stress, it's all personal preference whether you want to call it Jungle or Drum 'n' Bass.. It all started in the UK with a break. Techno Breakbeat, formerly called hardcore before it got fast, is where you'll find a lot of jungle's roots, as far as production goes. In the early 90's, the UK was going through it's hardcore rave revolution. Electronic music became more accepted by the masses, thus more and more producers began making mass excepted rave music. It was kind of cheesy but very dance-floor friendly relying heavily on recognition factor or explicit drug references as ear candy (think of the speed-racer rave track). For some producers, the mass accepted style was completely unappealing. Hardcore just wasn't hard anymore, so they focused their attention on the breaks and beats. They made them harder, faster ,and more complex. This was too much for the mass population but purists stayed true to the sound. They constantly pushed the limits of production, breaking basic rules in the name of experimentation. Out of it came a new form of music, consisting of sped up breaks arranged in a completely new and complex fashion over a rolling bassline running at half the speed. This later became known as Jungle. Although the history of the term "Jungle" is still questionable, here are some facts that connect the word to the music. Some say "jungle" is a reference to the original sound of the music, which was very tribal and earthy. Others believe it started as a racist comment toward the producers, who, at the time, were predominantly black. Whichever one you wish to believe, just consider them both equal contenders. Believe it or not, there was never an official "First Jungle Track". This remark should spark a few comments from the old schoolers, but really it all depends on how far back you want to go. Some say tracks like Lenny D Ice's "We Are IE" or Dee Patten's "Who's The Badman" were the originals. Others trace it back to hardcore. Some even go forward to Alex Reese's "Pulp Fiction". Despite everyone's difference of opinion on the first jungle track, it's unanimous that the sound just sort of happened. Somewhere between 1993 & '94, jungle completely separated from all other genres and stood on it's own. It was seen as a fad burning away in due time, but it just kept getting better. It was taking over pirate radio fast, incorporating a heavy ragga influence. Mc's at the stations would chant on the mic while producers spun their latest dubplates on the air. Dubplates are acetate washed metal plates, which can be played like a standard 12" record, but for only a short time. Over time (20-30 plays) dubplates wear thin until they can no longer be played. This was the most inexpensive way to press your own track and also a good way to be one up on your competition. The ragga jungle style became the ice breaker for the public. It brought a new form of energy to the listener. Mc's would say things like, "Calling all Junglists," a saying originated in the 70's in the Dub/Ragga culture. "Rewinds" were brought in from that culture as well. By '96, Jungle was widespread and well known. The media adopted the term "Drum 'n' Bass" when refering to the style of music, in order to dodge any racial criticism. It was never about race, gender, or origin only improvement, and to never stop the experiment with new sounds and ideas no matter how complex, simple, or abstract they may be. Today, Jungle has grown to an even newer and more exciting level. There are many different words labeling sub-genres like - Jump Up, Tech Step, 2 Step, Rollers, Drum'n'Space, and Ambient Jungle. Just remember, experimentation and creativity beyond contemporary acceptance spawned the creation. Let's all keep our minds open and enjoy the artistic expressions.
