NYC TICKET UPDATE

  • As expected, the band have NOT canceled the taping. The Hard Rock Live website offers the following explanation for the removal of The Cure from their taping list:
  • "Thanks to all of you who have been e-mailing with interest in going to the shows. As I'm sure you can guess, The Cure show is completely at capacity. We have a room capacity of 300 and we've received over twice as many requests. We'll try to accommodate as many of you as possible, but understand we can't call everyone back. Thanks for your interest. "

  • There's going to be a "Cure Fest" in Toronto on Oct. 2nd. Here's more info from the flier:
  • "It says "Share an evening with other fans in a funky atmosphere" and also says "Don't forget to try the Curetini: It tastes Just Like Heaven"...kinda corny :^) Anyway, it's at Vox Nightclub-585 Yonge Street in Toronto... 19 and over, doors open at 10pm with a $4 cover charge before 11pm or $6 cover charge after 11pm. "

    (Thanks Josh)

  • And there's going to be a Cure party in Germany on Oct. 29th .Here's the info:
  • "On 29.10.1999 is a Cure Party " Waiting for BLOODFLOWERS" in Germany, in the Town Halle/Saale, in the Club Steg e.V. near the centre of the Town. Open is 21:00. Live at this party is "Three Imaginary Boys" (The Sideproject of "Lament") - The best Cure-Cover-Project from Germany... See you???"

  • One of the bands contributing to Pink Pig needs help:
  • " i need help!! my band, suburbanyte, agreed to do 'fascination street' for the pink pig compilation but, as untimely as it seems, the band are unable to get together to record it in time and my keyboard has died, making it impossible for me to record it myself (unless i do it accapella!). so i am pleading if anyone out there would like to:

    a) record the music for fascination street and mail it to me so that i can add vocals;

or b) do their own version of fascination street for the pink pig project so that it does not go un-done.

either would suffice, but i am mostly keen to sing it myself, to add my own australian element to the song. if anyone is interested in helping me, please contact me on suburbanyte@yahoo.com thank you all.

    love -nic vox/keyboards, suburbanyte"

    (Thanks Nic)

  • A couple of more Cure "hearings":
  • "There's a local TV announcement about a local Olympic game in Macaé (Rio de Janeiro - Brazil) that starts with the beginning of "Wrong Number"!"

    (Thanks Fernando)

"One of the weird places I have once heard The Cure playing was in a small town in the Heilongjiang province of China. They were playing Lullaby from the speakers of a music store."

    (Thanks Clifford)

"There's a disco pub in Portugal, in Leça da Palmeira, called Bato that plays the Cure every night. The songs are Close to me, Friday I'm in love, Inbetween days, Boys Don't cry, Lovecats and Play for today. The disco pub is extremely well decorated and the rest of the music is Brit pop or alternative. "

    (Thanks Jorge)

  • NYC Update: Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm aware that The Cure have been removed from the taping list as of last night. I don't know what this means, but I'm looking into it right now. There are a few explanations for it, perhaps we overwhelmed them with our ticket requests, maybe they're trying to keep it secret (good luck!), or maybe they've decided to reschedule it. Whatever the case may be, I haven't heard anything about the band canceling their appearance. As always, when I learn more, I'll post it here.

  • NYC TICKET UPDATE

  • I've heard from 2 more fans who were able to get tickets:
  • Matt in New Jersey (They called at 11:30 am eastern on Mon.): "I am just writing to let you know that I also was able to get myself tickets, and the same deal, I am to call a week before the show to let them know if I want to pick them up the day of the show or earlier."

Brian in Chicago (They called on Mon. morning): "I just got the same phone call from Lisa at VH1. She asked me how many tickets I wanted and told me to call the week before the show to arrange for pickup either in advance or at the show. I wish I would have thought about asking her just how many tickets are being released to the public for this. Anyways, just thought I'd let you know of another Cure fan getting lucky for this show."

  • The band LUNA covered "Just Like Heaven" yesterday live in Paris.
  • (Thanks Bruno)

    NYC TICKET UPDATE

  • Just heard from Jennifer in San Diego that she received a call from the folks at VH-1, and got her 2 tickets to the show. So if you e-mailed HRL from their website, be aware that they are starting to call and give out the tickets. Good luck to everyone!
  • Update (9/27/99 - 3:13pm) - Just got more info from Jennifer about the call she got this morning:

"Lisa from VH1 called me this morning about 9:45. She told me that she was calling from VH1 and asked me how many tickets I wanted, and I said 2, for myself and my fiancee!! She told me that I needed to call her back the week of the taping and let her know if I would pick them up prior to the show, or at the show. And she gave me the phone number. "

If anyone else gets the call, be sure to let us know about it!

  • The Cure are listed in the new Guinness 2000: Book of Records - Millennium Edition. The catagory is "Most #1 singles on the Modern Rock Charts", and The Cure and Depeche Mode are tied as the British acts with the most #1's, with four each.
  • (Thanks Nadine)

  • A couple of more entries into the Cure in odd places list :
  • "I have heard two Cure songs played on muzak in Staples. (friday i'm in love, lullaby)

Also, I saw the hip-hop band Shootyz Groove and they did a quick into of Just Like Heaven before playing into one of their songs...(creepy)"

    (Thanks John)

"I just got back from a Los Angeles Kings Hockey game. During the practice skate, They played Why Can't I be You. It fit in pretty good. The Kings lost though."

    (Thanks Peter)

  • Here's a summary of the Hard Rock Live info:
  • The Cure will be in New York City on Oct. 19th to tape an episode of VH-1's Hard Rock Live at the Sony Music Studios. Tickets are currently being offered at the Hard Rock Live website on a first come, first serve basis. While the show is being taped in Oct., it will not be airing any time soon, probably not until next year.

I'm not sure if you have to live in NYC in order to get tickets from the HRL website, but I sent in my request for 2 tickets anyway. In case they don't come through, if anyone gets 2 extra tickets please contact me ASAP. What can I offer in return? How about undying gratitude? Everlasting friendship? First-born child? : )

  • Robert Smith is going to be interviewed for the 'Cash for Questions' article in the November issue of Q magazine and you have a chance to ask him questions.
  • You can e-mail your questions to q@ecm.emap.com or mail them to: Q Magazine, Mappin House, Winsley Street, London W1N 7AR

Make sure that you label your question as 'Cash For Questions - Robert Smith'.

'Only the sharpest, funniest questions will be put to The Cure's tousled perma-teenager. 25 pounds for each one printed - so include your name and address'

    (Thanks Steve)

Update! (9/27/99 - 10:36 am) - The Q interview has been pushed back due to the delay in the release of the album, and has now been rescheduled for Feb.

    (Thanks Becky and Chris)

    Sept. 24th

  • BIG NEWS (and now confirmed) - The Cure will be in New York City in mid-Oct. to tape an episode of VH-1's Hard Rock Live! The taping will take place at the Sony Music Studios in NYC. While I haven't been given the exact date yet, by looking at the Hard Rock Live taping schedule on their website, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that it will take place between Oct. 12th and Oct. 19th. There are no artists scheduled for Oct. 12th, 13th and 19th (don't know if they tape on weekends, so I'm not including those dates), so those are your best bets. I hope to have more info very soon (including rumors of the band possibly taping other things while they are there).
  • Update! (9/24/99 - 12:45 pm) - The taping will be on Oct. 19th. The venue that it is being taped at is very small (only holds around 100 people) so getting in will be very difficult. Tickets will not be sold to the public, and most will be given to VH-1 and other industry types.

Update! (9/24/99 - 4:55 pm) - Hard Rock Live have updated their taping schedule and now list The Cure and Bush at the Oct. 19th taping.

  • The reissue of Pornography on 180gm vinyl in a PVC sleeve has been delayed again due to problems with the sleeve artwork. No new date has been announced. You can still order it by e-mailing sales@simplyvinyl.com.
  • (Thanks Jean-Francois)

    Sept. 23rd

  • Here's something interesting for Seattle area fans:
  • "On Thursday, Sept. 23 a variety of local bands will have an 'an evening with music by the Cure '. It's a good way to see many local bands playing cure covers. Tickets are $5, doors open at 9pm. The club is 'Sit and Spin' at 2219 4th Ave in Seattle. Local people can pick up a copy of 'The Stranger' for more info. "

    (Thanks Reed)

  • Another Cure cover in the works:
  • " "M", a french band, will cover "Close to me" on the next album called "Je dis aime", that will be released on October 25th. The singer, Matthieu Chedid, is the son of a famous french singer in the 80's, Louis Chedid. The album will be released by Virgin France on CD and MC. Pictures and more informations very soon !"

    (Thanks Jerome & Brunno)

  • More info about the Doc Martens book:
  • "To celebrate 20 years of Madness, Dr. Martens have issued a special 'Madness Boot', stamped with the logo of the band who championed the footwear right from their early days. To support the release, the band will be at the Doc Martens London Covent Garden store at 2pm on Thursday 30th September, signing the new boot, purchasers of which will also get a free copy of a new Doc Martens book, celebrating DM's 40 years of 'association with youth culture' and features Madness, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Morrissey, Blur, The Manics, Suede and lots more. "

  • The Cure are mentioned in a Trent Reznor interview from USAToday. Here's the qoute:
  • "I'm envious of a band that sounds like a band," Reznor says. "I always wished I had the structure of The Cure or The Smiths."

    Sept. 20th

  • Here's an announcement I've been wanting to make for almost a year now - The Cure are coming to DVD! Well, sort of. Sony will be releasing MTV Unplugged: Finest Moments to DVD on Oct. 12th. The disc will include The Cure's performance of "Just Like Heaven". Here's the full track listing:

  • Listen Up - Oasis
Just Like Heaven - The Cure
    Lightning Crashes - Live
Deep Dark Truthful Mirror - Elvis Costello
Under The Milky Way - The Church
These Are Days - 10,000 Maniacs
    Black Gold - Soul Asylum
Black Boys On Mopeds - Sinead O'Connor
Must Have Been Love - Roxette

The disc (which will run 60 minutes) will also contain interviews, discographies and the standard interactive menus & scene access. You can pre-order the DVD at DVD Express for $13.99. Hopefully, Warner will release at least one Cure DVD in the near future (I'd like to see In Orange, Picture Show or Play Out released). I guess the real question for Warner is whether a release would make much sense right now. How many Cure fans have DVD players?

  • A band from Buenos Aires, Argentina called "la terminal" are recording their first album and will be covering The Cure's "Figurehead" and "Siamese Twins". The album will be available in November.
  • (Thanks Nicolas)

  • And Curiosity are searching for a new keyboard player. Here's the info if you're interested:
  • "CURIOSITY, the famous cure cover band search for a new keyboarder ( a boy or a girl!) Denis the original keyboarder has left the band this week!! If it's possible, the new keyboarder has to live in Liège, at least in the vicinity....for the rehearsals.

    THIS IS URGENT!!!"

    And in French:

"CURIOSITY, le groupe belge qui rejoue THE CURE recherche un nouveau claviériste. En effet, Denis a quitté le groupe cette semaine (on ne sait d'ailleurs pas pourquoi...). Pour plus de facilités pour les répétitions, il faudrait que le ou la nouveau (elle) claviériste habite Liège ou du moins ses environs.

    C'EST TRES URGENT!!!"

    (Thanks and good luck Vincent)

    Sept. 16th

  • More official info, this time from Universal Music Russia:

Then according to Universal Music Russia the first single off the album will be "Out Of This World"."

    (Thanks Dmitri)

  • Goldfinger are covering "Just Like Heaven". Here's the details from Sonicnet:
  • "Ska-punks Goldfinger will release an EP, Darrin's Coconut Ass - Live from Omaha, Nov. 9, according to their publicist. Despite its misleading title, the release is an in-studio recording featuring the band covering such rock songs as the Cure's "Just Like Heaven," the Who's "The Kids Are Alright" and the Police's "Man in a Suitcase." Goldfinger, who are planning to release an LP in February, will kick off a tour with Bloodhound Gang, Showoff and the Hippos Sept. 29 in Las Vegas. The outing runs through an Oct. 23 show in Providence, R.I."

    (Thanks Jeff & Dmitri)

  • Here's a bit more on the Carpathian Forest cover of "A Forest" :
  • "Carpathian Forest is from Norway and the title of the album is "Black Shining Leather" released on Avantgarde Music. Their vocalist recently commented on it in an interview for Eclipse Mag. : "It's not like The Cure is my favourite band, but this song has just followed me for many years. I really like the mood in it. I'm not so fond of Cure's "happy-go-lucky" tracks, but I really admire some of their old songs".

    (Thanks Peter)

"Presumedly no other musician in our scene has influenced people's fashion tastes and musical style as much as Robert Smith. His musical brilliance working with The Cure has made them pioneers of the Wave- and Gothic- Scene. Today there is hardly any band in the scene which doesn't name The Cure as an important influence.

This being The Cure's 20 year anniversary makes it a perfect time to publish a tribute CD on which bands in the scene pay homage to one of their major idols. Out of this effort comes a sampler which really does justice to this memorable occasion. 15 bands met this challenge and comfortably guide the listener through a varied cross section of the different creation phases of The Cure's history.

Bands such as THIS VALE OF TEARS, ARTWORK and ONE (ex-MERIDIAN member) offer classic versions which provoke the memory of the original work they commemorate, while XIII, the most popular underground band in iceland, and PUPPETLAND came up with more rock-orientated variants. STAHLINORGEL, an alias behind which a well-known German scene-band hides, espouses a more experimental interpretation, whereas WINTERMUTE, DICHROIC MIRROR, WHISPERS IN THE SHADOW and STONE 588 lull the listener into a comfortable, gloomy melancholia. The near pop interpretations from THE ESCAPE, MORBID POETRY and THE CAVES adapt themselves marvelously into the darker colored songs. Finally, SOFIA RUN and DECADENCE raise an unique highlight with their solemn acoustic pieces. They carry the listener off into the incomperable world of The Cure.

Not just for fans of The Cure, '15 Imaginary Songs' is a must for all who have ever had an interest in the Wave and Gothic scene. It will be a wonderful addition to your collection."

  • Here's some info on a couple of bands involved with the Pink Pig project :
  • "My band MONKEY TORTURE will be included on the PINK PIG PROJECT (thanks to everyone involved with such a creative idea!!) with our version of the track "PORNOGRAPHY." and since both THE CURE and THE PIXIES cast such big shadows in modern music (and both were fans of the other...) i just thought it would be cool to explain why we had to record our CURE cover at home instead of in the studio. we are getting ready to make a trip out to Los Angeles (this fall/winter...still planning) to record tracks with Joey Santiago (PIXIES-guitarist) producing and recording!! we would love to invite all CUREfans to check out our site and sounds...we've played many CUREsongs live ("A FOREST," "WHY CAN'T I BE YOU," "NEVER ENOUGH," "10.15 SATURDAY NIGHT," "M") and our influences show, so CUREfans might find some different things to like in our own originals too. our own website is here-->> www.homestead.com/monkeytorture

and free songs can be found here-->> www.mp3.com, using "monkey torture" for your search words."

    (Thanks Richard)

  • (Thanks Rodolphexxx)

  • Here's another one to add to the "Cure in weird places" list:
  • "I heard Pornography (the song itself) in a K-Mart shop in town (Adelaide, South Australia)...it lasted until Robert started singing and then someone took it off...very bizarre!! but it made me smile to see people shopping amidst the screeching noises and muddled voices of pornography...to whoever tried to put it on, well done...hope you've still got your job."

    (Thanks M)

  • And there is a brief shot of Robert in the latest episode of MTV's House of Style:
  • "I was watching MTV's house of style "a night at the opera" episode and during the show they had a section where they showed clips of what they thought were the popular trends throughout the years. They had clips on dress clothes, sportswear, hair and etc. When they said the hair group I thought they might show Robert, but they didn't. Then they went on to makeup and sure enough if you keep your eyes wide open you can see a quick pic of Robert and sporting his lovely eyeliner and lipstick. Check the MTV listings because they usually repeat shows."

  • "what's up doc? the dr. martens band book"

"Since the shoe's debut in 1960, all sorts of musicians ( Prodigy, Blur, The Cure) and music-influenced cultural movements (punk, mod, psychobilly) have adopted Docs as the boot to kick around in. The Dr. Martens Band Book tells you why. Snag a copy the next time you buy a pair..."

Does anyone have a copy of this or know anything else about it?

(Thanks midnightt the cure cat girl)

  • And now some news about Cure covers:
  • A band called The Get Up Kids have covered "Close To Me" on the cd "Before You Were Punk - Vol. 2" (label : vagrant , cat. # : vr339). You might remember that Vol. 1 (label:vagrant , cat. # :vr330) also included a cover of "Inbetween Days" by Face To Face.

Oleander's cover of 'Boys Don't Cry' was played as a lead in from commericials during the Howard Stern show on 92.3 WXRK ~ KROCK New York.

    (Thanks JoeyLom)

"Here's more proof of the cure's influence in other bands....even in those who have nothing to due with this kind of music...about 2 or 3 months ago i went to a record shop in lisbon, and the owner showed me a cd of a black metal band(BLARGH!!!)called Carpathian Forest (i really can't remember the name of the album), because it features a cover of The Cure's "A Forest". The song cover is very good, comparing with the rest of the album or even with the Creaming Jesus cover of the same song (that appears in "Gothic Rock 3"). The album front cover is black with a white (i think) photo and has some texture."

    (Thanks Paulo)

"Chicago's own emo-punk Alkaline Trio recently did a cover of exploding boy on the Pocket Bomb comp. http://www.saulgoodman.com/ has the comp. to order amd www.alkalinetrio.com has an mp3 of the song as well as some of their other clips. "

    m
    primary
    other voices
    doubt
    splintered in her head

    the kiss
    snakepit
    hot hot hot!!!
    all i want
    icing sugar
    hey you!!!
    breathe
    a chain of flowers
    out of mind
    plainsong
    prayers for rain
    2 late
    fear of ghosts
    play
    open
from the edge of the deep green sea
    wendy time
    trust
    to wish impossible things
    scared as you
    a foolish arrangement
    adonais
    club america
    jupiter crash
    round & round & round
    numb
    trap
    bare
    waiting
    more than this
