Cure Back In England To Record
The Cure have returned to Bath, England's St. Catherines Court to
complete their still-untitled upcoming studio album (spring 1999). St.
Catherines Court, owned by actress Jane Seymour, late of the television
show "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman," is where the moody pop-rock
group lead by Robert Smith recorded 1996's Wild Mood Swings.

The Cure Put Finishing Touches On
Album
B-Sides Disc On Hold
The Cure have resumed work on their follow-up to 1996's Wild Mood
Swings as of last week, and are holed up in St. Catherine's Court, a former
medieval monastery in Bath, England, to put the finishing touches on the
album. St. Catherine's Court is the same studio the band used to record
the last album. The as- yet- untitled album is scheduled for release in
the spring of 1999. As for the planned B-sides album that has been in the
works for awhile now, it's on hold. - Kevin Raub

"There's a full page ad for Babacar showing a guy swimming in a
red sea. It says "featuring ex-members of the cure, this mortal coil,
& shelleyan orphan," and has a mail order address.
Also in the Depeche Mode interview, Fletcher says of the cure version
of "world in my eyes," "I bet Robert [Smith] was pleased
to be working on a good song for once." He later clarified this as
a joke.
"just wanted to let you know that the cure will be on a new compilation
called "reinventing the 80's volume 2". i'm not sure what song(s)
will be on there, but it comes out on october 6th. it's available for pre-order
at www.amazon.com--the only
other bands mentioned that will be on it are the eurythmics and o.m.d.

Deftones Frontman Gets Tender in
Side Project
Chino Moreno, the lead screecher for the hard-rocking Deftones, has long said he has a weakness for soft, tender music. Now, he's going to prove it with Team Sleep, a side project that he says won't necessarily appeal to fans of the Deftones' aggressive, edgy metal attack.
"Fans who are really into what the Deftones do might dig it, but people looking for s--t to get crazy to won't," he tells Wall of Sound. "It's real sleepy, organic, ambient s--t—strummy guitars and soft vocals with beats."
Moreno says he was inspired to get the project off the ground after recording an acoustic remix of the Deftones" "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" with two fellow Sacramento musicians, the for-hire hip-hop DJ Crook and Jonah Matranga of the band Far. "It got large all overseas," Moreno says of the remix. "I realized how sick it was and decided I wanted to do more of it."
Moreno, who is joined in Team Sleep by his guitar- playing childhood friend Todd Wilkinson and DJ Crook, says one song already has been recorded by the group, whose reference points include Pornography-era Cure, Massive Attack, and even Jane's Addiction. He expects to complete five more between Sept. 21 and Nov. 7, when the Deftones take a break, during which time bassist Chi Cheng will undergo foot surgery and drummer Abe Cunningham's wife is due to have a baby.
"I get to do my thing, and it doesn't get in the way of what
the Deftones are doing," he says of the project. "I want to keep
it on a real underground level for now. I'm just going to give away tapes
to people who want it." —Josh Freedom du Lac

"I just received an email from German TV channel Bayern 3, that
they're NOT going to send the cure on October, 10th, as they broadcasted
cure on the highlights special on September, 11th, though their program
preview announce the cure to be broadcasted then. Very strange.
http://www.br-online.de/jugend/quer/concert.htm
According to them, there'll be no additional broadcast from the cure
other than on november, 17th, cause of broadcast scheduling reasons.

"i saw yesterday on a belgian tv (called "la une"), an
interview of depeche mode by rudy léonet (the radio 21 dj, the one
who take picture of the axion beach for 21). It was about the new dm "best
of", and they also talked about "for the masses", Rudy Leonet
said one of the most important band in this compilation was the cure, because
they are another great band from the 80s (then we saw a little clip of
an interview of robert saying "i like dm...i think there is always
2 or 3 great songs on each album...it's the music you remember for this
period..." i think it's a part of the promos interviews of "for
the masses" but i'm not sure. After this clip, Martin Gore said that
he heard about another tribute album will be made next year but this time
for "the cure" and that they probably HAVE to play a song for
this because the cure cure did one for dm...then he laughed and said that
they'll LIKE to do it...Dave Gahan said they could do a great version of
"a forest", and that the music is not very important with the
cure when you have the right mood."
"A beg for help regarding Taubertal Open Air on German tv. As you
may know, Bayern 3 plans to show 45min from The Cure in November from taubertal
festival. As they played for about 110 min, they will leave out a lot of
songs. So, it would be great, if you could email them at: bayern3@br-online.de
and complain about that fact, so they may consider to show at least 2 specials
with 45min length!"
As there are many people who like both the two bands and the future
of the Cranes depends on their fans'support(as no record label has signed
them). If there is anyone interested in CRANES , please go to www.cranes-fan.com
(their official site),because the future of the band depends only on their
fans'support.

and band contributions will be handed out at the depeche mode gigs..."
"Very strange, this TV channel Bayern 3:
I have just read on their videotext that there will be a Rock Night on the 10th of October including The Cure. So, I phoned them up to get more detailed information. They have already aired 4 songs from the Taubertal Festival and what is already known is that they will broadcast The Cure for about 45 min. on the 17th of November.
On the 10th of October, The Cure is also included with some songs from the Taubertal Festival. They don´t know which songs they are going to air, yet. But it may be that some songs are included that they have not broadcast recently and that they don´t broadcast in November.
So, watch out for this: 10th of October, starting at around midnight
and every band that they will broadcast will be included for about 15 min.
"The Cure's "More Than This" was featured as the backround
music in a trailer for the new series of the "X-files" starting
here in Britain this autumn. It was only a 10-15 second clip on BBC1 on
Tuesday (14/9/98) evening."

No Doubt To Get Goth For Next Album?
After helping fuel the popularity of ska-punk music with their multi-platinum album, "Tragic Kingdom," No Doubt has begun working in earnest on their new record, which lead singer Gwen Stefani says might find them in a decidedly "darker" direction.
During a pre-show interview at the MTV Video Music Awards, Gwen Stefani told MTV News' Kurt Loder that the band was currently listening and being influenced by the music of the Cure, the British "masters of mope rock."
Stefani, who was sporting a new, blue-haired do, also stated that No Doubt had written some 20-25 songs for the next album, seven of which had been recorded to "see how it feels."
"It feels weird to be creative again," Stefani said, explaining that the 2 1/2 years of touring had kept No Doubt from starting work on the follow-up to "Kingdom," which came out in 1995.
"We've been experimenting with different sounds," said guitarist Tom Dumont, "and we've been having a lot of fun being musicians again."
No word yet on when the next No Doubt album may arrive in stores,
but we'll keep you posted.
"The information I received from a spokesman of Bayern 3 TV by
e-mail was not complete. I received an email from Franziska and she wrote
me that she had phoned Bayern 3 and got the information that there will
be a highlight show from this years Taubertal Festival tomorrow (Friday,
11th of September) night.
The Cure will be broadcast for about a quarter of an hour. They will be on seventh position, right after Sabrina Setlur. Every band that is included will get space for 1/4 of an hour, so The Cure should be on at about 2 a.m., as the show starts at 12.30 a.m.
Then, on the 17th of November The Cure will be broadcast for 45 minutes."
(Thanks to Markus, Lars and Franziska for their
help confirming this)

"I thought I could add some info on the Cure broadcasts in Canal
Satélite Digital. As well as the four-day set of half-an-hour specials
from Monday to Thursday at 23:00 (Spanish time, same as Central European
Time, Greenwich time +1), they will re-broadcast the whole thing twice:
the first time on Saturday from 9:00 to 11:00 and on Sunday night from
1:00 to 3:00 (which means it's really on Monday). "

"Yesterday there was a two hour broadcast on Viva II from the Bizarre
Festival. Among the others there were also two songs by The Cure - Inbetween
Days (with a slight change in the lyrics), and Pictures of You (with quite
a long improvisation!). The Cure was the last performer of the transmission
so the introduction to Trust served the reported as the background to his
goodbyes. Between the songs there was a very short interview with Robert.
Anyone chatting with him - Don't ask stupid questions!!!
The programme will be broadcasted two more times:
-on Thursday (10 Sept.) at 3 p.m.
-on Saturday (12 Sept.) at 9 a.m.
The Cure is at the very end so you don't have to watch the whole
thing."

"Canal Satelite Digital used to have TV Channel called "Más
Música" (More Music) until one week ago. This channel used
to show lots of interesting and independent bands, but everyone got frightened
when they announced that it had been bought by Cadena 40. A channel called
"40 TV" was born on september the 1st and our suspicions got
confirmed when they announced that from 1st to 6th of september we would
have the "Elton John Week". Well, I suppose we were wrong since,
despite this punctual thing, the channel follows the same airing policy
as "Más Música".
Anyway, today it's been announced that from 7th to 13th of september we will have "The Cure week". I don't know exactly what they will air from the Cure, but everyone suscribed to Canal Satelite Digital, pay attention to it. It could be good."
Update on Sept. 6th at 7:18 pm (Thanks again to Dave) :
"I've just found out what's the schedule for the "Cure Week" in 40TV. The spanish music channel will be exclusively dedicated to The Cure from Monday to Thursday from 23:00 to 23:30.
Also, tonight at 1:00 am there will be a 1 hour Cure special. "

"I have just phoned the German music channel VIVA II to get to
know if The Cure are included in any of their specials about this years
Bizarre Festival, at all. Up to now, The Cure was not included and they
will not be included anymore. So, I´m sorry ! It was probable, but
actually it was nothing more than wishful thinking.
Concerning The Cure´s TV appearance on Bayern 3, I sent another mail to them to get more information (length, time, radio broadcast). Now, I have received an answer. It will at least last an hour. The broadcast will start at midnight ( that is the wednesday ) and at least long ´til 1 a.m.
There is no radio broadcast planned, as Bayern 3 radio broadcast
the show live !! Nice to get that information after the broadcast. Anyway,
now the date of The Cure´s show at the Taubertal Festival will be
on Wednesday, the 18th of November, beginning at midnight and longing at
least until 1 a.m. on Bayern 3 TV."
