  • Can anyone help Joshua with this question?
  • "I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of guitar robert was playing on kilborn (10:15) and what kind of bass simon was playing?"

    (Thanks Joshua)

Update: "Perry was most definately playing a Schecter Hellcat. Robert was playing a Schecter Mike Tempesta (Powerman 5000) Artist Model!!!!! wow!!!!!! I remember reading somewhere that Robert was gonna have a Schecter Model....... here's a picture of Robert's 'new ax' ~ god, i miss the Jazzmaster & Chet Atkins days!!!!!! "

    http://www.guitarasylum.com/productpages/schecter/tempesta.htm http://news.harmony-central.com/Newp/2002/Ultra.html

From the Schecter website: Other recent 'converts' to Schecter extended scale instruments are: The Cure's Robert Smith, Simon Gallup and Perry Bamonte , Paul Raven [Killing Joke], Geno Lenardo [FILTER], Charlie Clouser [NIN] and Nial McGaughuy from 3D House of Beef. http://www.schecterguitars.com/ds_home_fl.htm"

    (Thanks Joey)

"I'm writing to hazard a guess at the guitars the Cure used on the Kilborn show. I'm only going by memory here. I can't remember if Simon used the same bass on Just Like Heaven as he did 10:15, but (using last night as my reference) I remember the body and headstock shapes, as well as the tone and volume knob positions, as well as the fact the black body was laced with a white inlay, I'd guess that it's a Schecter C Series C4 Elite bass. I think Perry and Robert used Schecters also. I THINK that Robert was using a Mike Tepesta Artist Model Schecter guitar. This is only an educated guess. Curiously, the marketing slant on the Schecter website is mostly toward NU Metal artists. And I have no idea if this is true, but maybe IAM has a product-use relationship with Schecter... if in fact they were Schecter guitars in the first place. Eitherway, I think they were beautiful guitars (shiny!) And though I don't think the band used any, but the C-series E/A Schecter electric is a sexy, sexy, sexy guitar.

I hope the gods of gear knowledge will smile upon me and one day I will be carried off into the land of infinite sustain."

    (Thanks Jeremy)

"As this is my husband's favorite game to play, I decided to get him in on this guessing game. Although it is extremely difficult for him to really make out Simon's guitar, as they really didn't focus much on him throughout that performance, he thinks that might be an Ibanez (Sound Gear), according to how the headstock looks.

He's sure that Robert's is a Schecter, though it is difficult to tell which model.

Maybe it will be more obvious tonight. (Hopefully we don't get hit with a tornado during the show...)"

    (Thanks Pyra)

"I believe they were both playing Schecters. ( It may very well have been the Robert Smith Signature model...)"

    (Thanks Lou)

"The guitar that Robert was playing on the Kilborn show was NOT a Schecter Mike Tempesta artist model! Watch the video... there's no alien symbol thingy on the 12th fret. It is REALLY REALLY just a Schecter Ultra (predicessor to the Tempesta model). They don't make them anymore like that... less expensive, without the "artist" namesake.

You boys sure are dumb with your guitars!!!

I'll tell you this... you can pry my Jazzmaster and my Bass VI out of my cold, dead hands before I buy a Schecter!"

    (Thanks Deanna)

  • Cure covers:
  • "I just wanted to let you know I always find room for some Cure stuff during my two-man acoustic lounge act shows. We go by the name "Remains" and play gigs through out the Phila/NJ/DE area, although we're on a bit of a break right now. We have a site - www.remainsnet.com.

Cure songs we cover from time to time:

    --Same Deep Water as You

    --Plainsong

--I throw a "Why Can't I Be You" on the end of our version of Pearl Jam's "Black" that starts with the "you run around in circles" line and leads into the chorus

--I also put some "Out of This World" lyrics at the beginning of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the Stones

Just wanted to let you know I always try to pay tribute to The Cure during my gigs in one way or another. Looking forward to the next tour - I foresee 2004 to be a good year for that."

    (Thanks Sean)

  • Curespotting:
  • "In this week's Rolling Stone (with the late, great Johnny Cash on the cover) there is a small article about Coldplay and the cause to Make Trade Fair. The last part of the piece is Chris (Martin) talking about their music, "We're trying to make a record that will get us inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame", Martin says with a laugh. "Right now we've got some songs that sound like we want to be The Cure. That's because we do."

Ha! Now, I have seen Coldplay live, they put on a good show, and I have liked them for about 4 years now, before they got so famous. Recently I got tired of the cheesy media hype as more and more people began to like them...and how much useless attention goes to Chris Martin and Gwenyth Paltrow...But I now have a new respect for Mr. Martin and Coldplay :) LOL "

    (Thanks Anah)

  • Here's the setlist from the InDemand HD pay-per-view version of Trilogy:

  • Review of the B&J remix of "A Forest":
  • "Review of Blank & Jones feat. Robert Smith "A Forest" from 19 Sep issue of "DJ" magazine in the UK:

It's not often you see such involvement in a project like this. It took six months of coaxing Robert Smith out of retirement to front this 2003 version of the classic "A Forest". A fair few European trance outfits have had a crack at this tune over the years. None have tackled it with quite the same class though. There is no ugly fromage-fuelled pile up here. Instead you have the haunted nature of the original 's vocals wrapped into a pulsing, deep end trance workout. Robert's vocal has evey inch the depth it had 20 years back when it was first released.

    5 out of 5.

Hell's teeth - despite the retirement jibe/error, a good review?! That was unexpected!"

    (Thanks pre-fix)

  • And here's the chart info for "A Forest":
  • "A Forest ( Blank & and Jones with Robert ) went straight into the German Top 100 charts at No. 14 and makes it from 8 to 7 in the alternative singles charts."

    (Thanks Tom and Dennis)

"Blank + Jones with Robert Smith with their version of 'A forest' entered the MTV Germany Dancefloor Charts at #4"

    (Thanks Dennis)

  • Cure covers/samples:
  • "I missed to report that the following event was taking place. but at least you get the review.

The day before yesterday (23rd September) local bands from Barcelona played short sets (20-30 minutes) of international bands in BAM music festival at Barcelona. A band called Freak XXI played a short set of cure covers. The set list was: Burn, Friday I'm In Love, Close To Me, Lullaby, Hot! Hot! Hot! and Why Can't I Be You? The band itself was able to play but the singer ruined most of the songs with an over-the-top performance. The singer commited the unforgivable sin of inviting the unsuspecting crowd to clap hands at some stages... fortunately the crowd -hundreds of people- didn't follow his instructions and enjoyed dancing to the music being played. Later on the night, The Residents and Spiritualized took the main stage at the same event in front of thousands of people."

    (Thanks Joel)

"Close to me is used a lot in the song Need You tonight by Tanya Stephens. "

    (Thanks Henrik)

  • Curespotting:
  • "In this interview (http://www.theonionavclub.com/3936/feature1.html) with Conor Oberst of the band Bright Eyes, Conor says he remembers saying the cure was his favorite band while he was in second grade. You can hear some influences in his voice and music as well but with a good dose of folk. It is recommended listening for any cure fan."

    (Thanks Matt)

  • A reminder that the edited version of Trilogy will be on InDemand HD tomorrow night:
  • "Just saw a commercial on a new nationwide high-definition television channel Comcast gave us here in the Philadelphia metro area a couple of weeks ago. They show a rather long clip of the end of 100 Years (about 1 min), and in another comericial they show a short clip of Mabye Someday. The two channels are called INHD & INHD2 show HD programming all the time. Anyway, they will be showing an edited :59 min High-Definition version of the Trilogy show (they call it "Live in Berlin" & "The Dark Trilogy") this Thursday @ 6pm EST/3pm PST & 11pm EST/8pm PST on InHD, and Friday @ 2:30am EST/11:30pm PST. They also state in their info that "The performances were recorded with three audio streams and shot in HD on 12 cameras." (which is basically what it says on the DVD packaging).

P.S. It will probably be broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1 audio as well, because all the other movies on INHD that are available in 5.1 they show with 5.1 audio. The site is INHD.com for more info."

    (Thanks 66intheSky)

  • Curespotting:
  • "On XM Radio #44 (FRED) they just played a "live concert" of The Cure from the BBC. (19:00 pacific time 9/22/03). It was NOT from II3 (Don't know which concert it was). Don't know if there will be a replay or not."

    (Thanks Bryon1)

"Just as I was flicking channels I came across this show...a documentary on Jimi Hendrix called 'Can't Take It With You', only to hear a song which sounded familiar but I couldn't quite grasp what it was...it took a few seconds before realising it was of course The Cure's excellent cover of 'Purple Haze' playing in the background. How very nice of the BBC to play this, and that The Cure get a showing on such a documentary...we all know Robert has the spirit of Jim Hendrix in him, particularly while playing THAT solo in The Kiss!"

    (Thanks Tom)

  • Can anyone help Lissa out? :
  • "Hi, I was one of the many who was able to enjoy the fabulous set The Cure played at the II3 show this past week, but for whatever reason, when I got there (at 1:00), at the entrance where I went in, there were not any KROQ people handing out programs, and after searching what seemed like everywhere, I was still unable to find one. Do you know if anyone has an extra one that they don't want? I would really appreciate it if you could put me in touch with them or perhaps get the word out. Thanks so much!! =) USCGirlie@aol.com"

  • II3 article from Launch:
  • NEWS - '80s Bands Flashback To The Future At KROQ's Inland Invasion

(9/22/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- Everything old was new again this past Saturday (September 20) at San Bernardino, California's Hyundai Pavilion, where Southern California alt-rock radio station KROQ 106.7 FM held its third annual Inland Invasion festival. An all-day event subtitled "Flashback To The Future," the concert featured such new wave staples from KROQ's '80s playlist as the Cure, Psychedelic Furs, Berlin, Violent Femmes, Dramarama, Bow Wow Wow, Marc Almond of Soft Cell, General Public, Echo & the Bunnymen, and the recently reunited Duran Duran--not to mention a vintage video game arcade equipped with Ms. Pac-Man, Burgertime, Dig-Dug, Frogger, Asteroids, and Donkey Kong machines.

Surprisingly, among the 60,000-plus fans in attendance were many teen rockers who weren't even alive when most of the aforementioned artists were in their prime; perhaps they were attracted by the younger acts on bill, like Fountains Of Wayne, Hot Hot Heat, Interpol, Dashboard Confessional, Kings Of Leon, and Jet. However, even those bands were so decidedly retro in sound, and the teenagers' new wave/punk mall fashions so decidedly retro in style, that it was still difficult to forget that this concert was taking place in 2003. The only clues to the actual decade were the '80s artists' few extra wrinkles and gray hairs, multiplied and exaggerated 500 times on the venue's giant video screens.

Among the newer bands on the bill, the highlights were Australia's Jet (this millennium's AC/DC), who rocked the side stage with their surprise cover of the Arthur Crudup/Elvis Presley classic "That's All Right Mama"; '90s comeback kids Fountains Of Wayne (the modern-day answer to the Cars), who befuddled the young crowd by playing riffs from '70s dinosaur-rock tunes like Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good," Kansas's "Carry On Wayward Son," Foreigner's "Double Vision," and even the Cars' "Let's Go"; Interpol (dead-ringer Joy Division soundalikes), who performed in their trademark black suits and ties despite the broiling desert heat; and Southern-fried rock 'n' rollers Kings Of Leon, aka the new Lynyrd Skynyrd. But the new-millennium standout of the Inland Invasion was without a doubt Canadian garage rock sensation Hot Hot Heat (currently the number-one band on KROQ), whose frontman Steve Bays was a crazy, rolling ball of energy, his wild mop of Sweathog-like curls flapping in the desert wind as he tottered about on his skinny pipe-cleaner legs, yelped like XTC's Andy Partridge, and pounded his vintage keyboard like Jerry Lee Lewis.

The older bands, however, were really the main attractions of the day. One of the best-received artists was the Psychedelic Furs, despite the fact that lead singer Richard Butler stumbled and fell while performing their second number, "Ghost In You" (Butler laughed off the gaffe, joking, "I'm one suave bastard!"). The Violent Femmes, still one of KROQ's most popular bands, wisely offered a crowd-pleasing selection of only their biggest and most beloved hits, including "Gone Daddy Gone," "Add It Up," "American Music," and perennial favorite "Blister In The Sun." Bow Wow Wow's revamped lineup featured special guest drummer Adrian Young of No Doubt, who gushingly wrote in the concert's program notes, "It's a dream come true to perform with a band I grew up idolizing. I feel like a kid back in the sandbox." And finally, Echo & the Bunnymen's Ian McCulloch boasted, "We're the best f--king band in the world...we should have been on last tonight," and declared Echo's song "Killing Moon" to be "the greatest song of all time"--and no one in the roaring, delighted crowd even argued with him.

Still, the biggest draws of the Inland Invasion were undoubtedly Duran Duran, whose original five-member lineup recently began touring again for the first time in 17 years, and the Cure, who were returning to the stage for the first time since the 2000 Bloodflowers tour.

Unfortunately, Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon's voice was in disappointingly poor form (he kept scowling at the sound crew and gesturing that he couldn't hear himself on the monitors--scowls and gestures that were broadcast on the jumbo video screens for all the Pavilion to see), but no one seemed to mind; as long as he was singing Old Romantic hits like "Hungry Like The Wolf," "The Reflex," "Save A Prayer," "Wild Boys," "Friends Of Mine," "Rio," "Careless Memories," and "Girls On Film," the fans didn't care how many bad notes he hit. However, when Le Bon announced that Duran Duran were going to play a new song, "What Happens Tomorrow," impatient spectators in the crowd actually booed audibly and cried out, "Noooo!"

The Cure closed out the night with a stunning greatest-hits set that was hands-down the high point of the entire festival. Starting with "10:15 Saturday Night" from their 1979 debut album Three Imaginary Boys, they embarked on a chronological journey of their remarkable 25-year career, including "A Forest" (from 1980's Seventeen Seconds); "Primary" (from 1981's Faith); "One Hundred Years," "The Figurehead," and "A Strange Day" (all from 1982's Pornography); their 1984 breakthrough single "Let's Go To Bed"; "Shake Dog Shake" (from 1984's The Top); "Just Like Heaven," "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep," and "The Kiss" (from their 1987 double-album Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me); "Pictures Of You," "Disintegration," "Fascination Street," "Love Song," and "Plainsong" (from their 1989 landmark Disintegration); "From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea" (from 1992's Wish); and two final songs off Bloodflowers, "Maybe Someday" and "39." The fantastic two-hour performance concluded with Smith crooning "Boys Don't Cry" while clutching a stuffed toy cat given to him by an adoring fan in the front row.

In the chorus of "39," band leader Robert Smith sang, "The fire is almost out, and there's nothing left to burn," but judging from this performance, the Cure have plenty of fire left in them. After thanking all the bands on the bill and rightfully declaring the Inland Invasion to have been a "f--king excellent day," Smith promised the audience, "See you next year!"--and at this rate, the Cure actually might be playing alongside Interpol and Hot Hot Heat at the Inland Invasion in 2023.

  • Got a couple of e-mails this morning wondering if this is the first time The Cure has done a "History" setlist., and the answer is no. • Watch The Glove performing on a UK tv show:
  • "There is an incomplete 1983 uk tv performance of the glove's "punish me with kisses" here: http://www.homestead.com/thiefoffire/ "

    (Thanks David)

  • Cure cover:
  • "Last night, i saw the band Year of the Rabbit open up for Thursday at house of blues in chicago. they opened with a jaw dropping cover of "plainsong." in addition, the lead singer of Year of theRrabbit (ken andrews, x- of failure) was wearing red lipstick and black eyeshadow. possibly it was a nod to robert smith, i don't know. "

    (Thanks Kevin)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I decided to go out and drown my sorrows having not taken the last flight from london to L.A, whilst getting ready to do so I flicked through the TV channels to discover a contestant on one of those dreadful 'pop idol' type shows, covering 'friday i'm in love' in 'shouting/punk' fashion, If anyone saw it too they would agree it was bad enough to send anyone out for more than a few drinks! "

    (Thanks Ange)

"I just read the e-mail from Ange re: that cover of Friday I'm In Love, unfortunately I also stumbled across this "performance" whilst channel hopping on Saturday night. To begin with with I actually found it quite funny because the guy looked so pathetic, but after a few more seconds it became painful. He had no talent what so ever, and completely murdered the song. I am not against covers, but this contestant tried to copy the mannerisms of a number various performers and put them all together. The end result was sacrilege and embarrassing to watch."

    (Thanks Sparks)

    Sept. 20th

  • Well the Invasion is on and it seems like the bands are on schedule so far. But there are somewhere around 30 unhappy Cure fans who were still waiting to get in to the show at 6:30pm pacific time. Seems that a portion of The Cure's guest list still hadn't arrived at that time. Hopefully, everyone will be able to get in soon and enjoy the last half of the show. Also, there shouldn't be much of a wait for the setlist tonight, as I should get it called in right after the show. So if all goes as planned, there won't be any waiting until 5am eastern to find out what they played. Keep your fingers crossed. : )

  • Keep forgetting to mention this, but The Cure did NOT make it on to this year's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination ballot. This was their first year being eligible, and only the most optimistic of fans expected them to make it, but it's still disappointing. Oh well, maybe next year.

  • Cure cover:
  • "Mr Alphabet has done a cool version of "Fire In Cairo" to hear at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mr_alphabet/"

    (Thanks Kate)

  • Ok, I never post these things, but I'm making one exception. Brian has some Cure vinyl for sale, including some autographed items. If you're interested, check it out.

  • Curespottings:
  • "Dunno if anyone was watching fame academy 2 over here on BB1 tonight, but one of the guys on there (peter i think) sang 'friday im in love', it was a very over the top version, and he forgot some of the lyrics (i know!!!!!!), but just thought id let u know! hopefully the young teeny bopper britney fans that watch that show will have their eyes opened to some decent music!"

    (Thanks Andy and Mark)

    Sept. 19th

  • Finally, reports from inside the taping:
  • "I was able to get into the taping and had wonderful seats. The whole line thing was unfortunate. The good news is the group of Asian fillers did not see the taping. 95% of the audience were Cure fans. The place was REALLY small. They taped the band right away. They introduced the band then they shushed us. It was a bit awkward and Robert felt it. He actually interacted the audience by asking us what we thought they were going to play. They started 10:15 and got about a third through it (if that) and then stopped. Something about feedback, I couldn't hear it I was too excited. At the end OF BOTH SONGS, Robert said "Maybe they will let us come back out after the show to do another song" (practice for them I am sure). But right after the Cure was finished their equipment was taken down. I guess the show wasn't interested in letting the band rehearse for Sat. For all of you going, I'll see you at the Inland Invasion. AT LEAST A TICKET FOR THAT WILL ACTUALLY GET YOU IN. Good luck with the parking and the hike."

    (Thanks Danielle)

"I was able to make it in the show as well. The line situation was to be expected as the seating was very limited. I was a little upset with KROQ...not only do they have the monopoly on II3, but they had to secure Kilborn tickets as well. Only 5 or 6 got in with KROQ passes, but that was 5 or 6 fans who waited in line and never made it in. I was there since 11:00, and it didn't really matter where you stood in line unless you had the internet ticket and were in the front. The Cure were in a great mood and seemed fresh. Robert's interaction with the audience was great... I don't know who was there to see Kilborn or any of the guests for that matter...It would have been nice to hear one more song, though. I think the studio crew could have been a little more fan friendly. Maybe not everyone could get into the actual taping, but the studio as a whole is big enough to set up a little green room to accomodate more fans, allowing them to watch it from a monitor.! They had time to prepare because they knew how fast the tickets went. You can tell the difference between someone just going to see the show and someone who wants to see The Cure. There was a lot of energy only because of who was playing, not because Kilborn is funny or worth it. Until tomorrow..."

  • Trilogy finally coming out in Japan:
  • "HMV in Japan started to call pre-order for the trilogy DVD - Japanese edition several weeks ago. It will be released on 22nd October 2003. I was not sure if it's officially confirmed or not at first because the cure's official site had not yet mentioned Japanese trilogy DVD at all, but now I've noticed it's appeared in pre-order lists of any DVD shops here. So now, it's OK to tell you... at last, Japanese Cure fans will see a long awaited trilogy DVD.

Title: Trilogy - Live in Berlin

    Level: Dreamtime (No.DEBR14803)

    Region Code: 2 (JAPAN)

    NTSC

*It's said that interview parts have Japanese subtitles.

I hope that the release of the live DVD will push up the petition for the Cure live in Japan... http://www.thecure.jp/petition/en/ "

  • Curespotting:
  • "Last week MTV2 ran the 'Top 22 Bands of All Time', Cure was 13, just a short history blurb.

Today the preview channel (TV guide channel) had a blurb about the Kilborn show tonight, using one of the WMS promo shots."

  • Wasn't that excellent? The band did a great version of "10:15 Saturday Night" on Kilborn last night. I think you can sum it up in 6 words - They looked great and sounded better! Despite the reports from the taping, it seemed like there were a bunch of Cure fans in the audience, as they were quite vocal.
  • The other guests on the show were legendary writer, director, producer, Carl Reiner and the wonderful Parminder Nagra, star of the excellent indie film "Bend It Like Beckham". The show did a video bio of Carl Reiner and claimed that his life changed when he met The Cure, and that he became the president of their fan club and went on tour with them several times. They ended it with a shot of Carl in full Cure hair & makeup. Pretty funny. When Carl came out, he took off his jacket and revealed that he was wearing a Cure t-shirt. He took that off and threw it to someone in the audience. He also told Kilborn that he was hoping to get their autographs.

When Parminder mentioned to Craig that she was from England, he asked her if she was a Cure fan, and she said that when she was younger and in the orchestra, they used to watch Cure videos on the bus, while traveling to shows.

After 10:15 and a commercial break, Craig "interviewed" Robert. He (Kilborn) showed just what an idiot he is, by telling Robert that he was a big fan, then asking "Do you guys still write new songs?". Yeah Craig, you seem like you're really familiar with the band. : ) Ok, maybe we said ARE you guys writing any new songs, but he still seemed clueless about The Cure.

Robert seemed pretty comfortable with the whole thing, and was pretty damn funny with his answers and body language. He talked a bit about Trilogy, making the new album and drinking tea, not alcohol (to help keep his voice strong)..

All in all, the band came off very well I thought. Kilborn said they would be back next week to do "Just Like Heaven", but don't let him fool you. They recorded it yesterday and will play it sometime next week.

One last thing, someone should take Jason's Eraserhead tape/dvd away from him. I think he's becoming obsessed with the Jack Nance character. : )

    Sept. 18th

  • Spoiler alert! If you don't want to know what the band are scheduled to play on the Kilborn show, stop reading now.....3....2....1....As of a couple of days ago, the band were scheduled to play 10:15 Saturday Night (band's choice) and Just Like Heaven (Kilborn show request). Don't know if they will show both tonight or split them up over two nights, like they did with Morrissey, or just choose one of the songs for the show. Guess we'll find out soon, as fans start coming back from the taping.
  • Update: Our first reports from the taping...or line for the taping. I was afraid something like this would happen:

"Today's taping was not one for the annals of great Cure events. We arrived at about 1:15 for the taping and had about 10-15 people in front of us. We had our "Priority Online Ticket" which if you didn't need toilet paper, was useless as it turned out. The line in front of us swelled to at least 30-40 because people apparently had been saving spots for people who were late arriving. However, it did them no good either. In the end, if you didn't have tickets from KROQ or tickets from those Hollywood Tour packages you were pretty much out of luck. We met some nice people and shared our disappointment with them. I heard many people mentioning COF and although we were prepared with tickets in hand and properly attired (not that they were enforcing the carefully laid out dress code rules anyway)alas, we were unable to get in. In fact I would estimate that fewer than 20 people got in with tickets from the internet. The audience coordinator, who was dubbed "Bon Jovi" by some, received our bribes and subsequent threats of bodily harm with equal indifference. He then attempted to placate the 50-75 of us who had been sweating in the sun for 3-4 hours with VIP tickets to a future Kilborn taping, to which all replied "WHY? ARE THE CURE GOING TO BE THERE?" Bon Jovi retorted with "This is the Kilborn show not The Cure show". Of course I doubt if the Kilborn show gets 200 people standing in line for hours on a daily basis. All in all a disappointing afternoon but hopefully Saturday will make up for it."

    (Thanks Chris)

"I had a rough time at the Late Late show taping as well. My friend got there at 9:30am and no one was there, so he walked around for a bit. He came back at noon and there were 4 or 5 people in line. I joined him at 2:00 and there were about 4 groups of people in front of us. One group had 2 people, one had 6 and one had 3. We thought we would make it in no problem. Think again. The 11 people in front of us made it in along with around 150 who were either VIPs, on the guest list, or KROQ winners. So, out of all the people who “got” tickets on line 11 people made it in. I understand they have to overbook so they don’t end up with an empty audience, but I think they could come up with a better system. I drove 150 miles, my friend drove 100 miles and we waited outside all day. To have a bunch of frat boys on the guest list make it in to the show. I was glad to see some Cure fans make it in. I just hopped back in my car and drove 150 miles back home, with thoughts of a better outcome on Saturday. Oh yeah, I also have a VIP pass for a future taping of the Late Late show!!!! I think I could get at least $2.75 for that on eBay. Kilborn sucks."

    (Thanks John)

"Got in line a little past one o'clock with a few people in front of us. I was convinced this was not going to be a repeat of Mad T.V. three years ago. Internet ticket print out were worthless unless you were one of in the first 10 ticket holders in line. Host comes out and goes to the back of the line and escorts a group of 25 Asian teenagers from a community college who get paid to fill the seats who show up at the last minute and did not wait in the hot sun. I asked one of the teens who were the guest for the show, his reply he did not know. Incredible. Then he asked for Kroq ticket holders who did not wait in line in the hot sun to step inside. Next he asked for red ticket holders, apparently for tourist who get tickets at Hollywood blvd who don't give a shit about The Cure to step inside. Plus any people in the guest list and anyone else that had a badge from another studio also had priority over us real fans. He walked up to me and wrote standby on my ticket. Then asked for any other type of tickets and kroq people and again ignored us again. We did not get in. People were losing their tempers and some were crying. People who got into the studio were walking out of the studio because they did not fit. They only hold about 87 guest in the audience. CBS sucks for their disregard to us real fans who got in line early and waited in the hot sun just to build our character. Kroq sucks for exploiting the event. Who the hell does kroq think they are by sabatoging our chances to see the show. Sending people to the show with special tickets who show up late to the line and still get to see the show. Kroq does not even play Cure music. Kroq in Los Angeles only kisses the Cures ass when they are in town. "

    (Thanks IgnacSl)

  • A reminder that The Cure will be appearing on the Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn tonight. The show airs at 12:35am eastern, 11:35pm central, right after David Letterman on CBS. Be aware that some stations delay the show anywhere from 30-90 minutes, so check your local listings to be sure of the time in your area.
  • Also, can anyone out there make a copy of it for the video archive? I can do it, but the quality would probably suffer. Either way, it WILL be up. So you fans on the east coast who are worried about missing it due to possible power outages caused by hurricane Isabel, relax! Just make sure you protect yourself, family, pets and property, and the file will be waiting for you when the power gets restored. Good luck to everyone, and I hope you all make it through the storm without any damage.

  • Extra ticket for the Kilborn taping tonight:
  • "I have an extra ticket for tommorows taping, anyone interested needs to email me by 1:00 tommorow to arrange a meeting at the studio. I should be there by 2:00. namepawarlord@yahoo.com"

  • "In case you haven't checked out the KROQ site, the traffic will be heavy this weekend due to the Indy Car Races. The 10 and 15 interchange will be heavy. You can take the 10E from LA to Haven Ave and go North to Foothill Blvd. Make a right on Foothill and it will take you to the 15 Frwy. You will go north on the 15 Frwy and you'll run into the Pavillion. ALSO the LA County Fair is going on as well which is located right off the 10 frwy. So if you are coming from LA, you can take the 10E to the 605N. Take the 210E to 15N. You will miss all the traffic. Good luck."

  • The official site has confirmed the Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn appearance on the 18th. Also, I'm watching Kilborn now and when he mentioned The Cure being on later this week, he said "And I will talk to Robert Smith. I know a lot people don't do that, but we'll talk to him". (applause) "We'll share make-up tips". Well if that's going to be the level of discussion, maybe Robert should decline. : )

  • Danielle wanted to let everyone know that her extra tickets for the Kilborn taping are gone, so you can stop e-mailing her about them.
  • On a related note, can anyone who has been to a Kilborn taping confirm whether or not they check the name on the ticket with a master list or anything like that, or do they just take the ticket and let you in? Thanks.

  • The "Greatest Hits" UK re-issue (also out on monday) gets some advertising:
  • "Just thought I'd let you know I saw a full page advert on P52 of The Guardian magazine today (placed by Virgin) for The Greatest Hits cd 'released 15/09'! The text reads: 'The Cure have recently been cited by many bands including Zwan and Hot Hot Heat as a major influence on their music. Their greatest hits album spans a 25 year and 20 album career. This limited double cd contains such classics as The lovecats, Close to me, Friday I'm in love and Inbetween days as well as a bonus disc containing very special acoustic tracks. "One of the most influential bands of all time." - The Guardian.'

Also as regarding Tim Burgess of The Charlatans, I interviewed him in 1990 & he enthused about how he had bought every album & 'Faith' was his favourite. Also Cure fans Mogwai are set to curate next year's 'All tomorrow's partys' Festival at Camber Sands. The bands are usually a mixture of influential and new groundbreaking bands. You never know 17 Seconds or Faith in full, or have they gone off that idea?"

If you missed the news of the re-issue, you can read about it here.

  • Some interesting info on who might be releasing the b-sides set and remastered cds in the US:
  • "I just got word from the higher ups at elektra that they will NOT be releasing any of the re-releases, or the 'join the dots' box set. i don't know where Musictap gets their info, but it may be import only, as the band don't own any of the back catalog. the word is that rhino will be releasing the re-releases stateside, but they cannot confirm."

    (Thanks anonymous #1)

"I talked to my friend at Elektra the other day and the first thing he told me when he saw me was that to the best of his knowledge, the b-sides set was NOT coming on elektra in the states…he said he heard that discussions between Robert and Elektra did not go very well…he said the re-masters as far as he knew were also NOT coming on Elektra…he thought universal in the states but didn’t remember why…but to this point, not a soul from any major distribution company knows jackola about the b-sides collection!!...crazy!!.."

    (Thanks anonymous #2)

Update: "I just wanted to chime in my 2 cents about the "Who will release 'Join the Dots'?" question. Musictap, the link that I sent you to earlier, mentions a few paragraphs up from the Cure mention, "Warner news that we promised yesterday are anticipated releases of the following titles." Elektra is a division of Warner Bros., but RHINO is ALSO a division of Warner Bros. Rhino seems to be the division that handles all of the back catalogue stuff (reissues, box sets, etc.) for Warner (i.e. New Order box, Echo & the Bunnymen box, Joy Division box), so I wouldn't doubt that the b-sides box AND the album reissues will both have the Rhino stamp on them (but still, technically, be owned by/under the umbrella of Warner Bros)."

    (Thanks Eric)

  • N.M.E. has picked up on the Inland Invasion sellout record:
  • JUST LIKE HEAVEN!

Tickets for THE CURE's headlining performance at KROQ RADIO's 25th anniversary concert 'INLAND INVASION: FLASHBACK TO THE FUTURE' have sold out in record time with 50,000 tickets gone in four days.

Taking place in the Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion - the largest amphitheater in the US - on September 20, the event is the fastest selling in the history of the venue, according to Clear Channel.

The Los Angeles radio station's celebration also boasts a line-up including Kings Of Leon, Jet, Interpol, Hot Hot Heat and Duran Duran.

Del Williams, the event's organiser, said, "There is a tremendous passion for The Cure's prolific catalogue of music and relevance as the standard bearer for the alternative rock format as evidenced by the rabid demand for tickets for this event."

Also appearing on the bill will be Dashboard Confessional, Echo And The Bunnymen and Eighties one-hit wonders Berlin.

One-hit wonders Berlin? Hmm, "The Metro", "No More Words" and the massive "Take My Breath Away". Sorry, N.M.E. just really irks me sometimes. : )

    (Thanks Chris)

  • The Musictap website has a Nov. 11th release date for the 'Join The Dots' b-sides box set, but doesn't mention who is actually putting it out.
  • (Thanks Eric)

  • Still no official confirmation about the Kilborn show, but there should be something soon. And if you didn't get any of the free tickets, Danielle might have some extras:
  • "I was able to reserve 8 tickets. it looks like I will have a few extras. I am not sure how many right now, but I am willing to give them to cure fans. have anyone e-mail me if they are interested."

    (Thanks Danielle)

Update: Some good news and bad news (maybe). First the good news. I was watching Craig Kilborn tonight and he was talking about all of the great guests he had lined up for next week, and right in the middle, he mentioned The Cure, which got got a big cheer from the audience. He didn't mention a date though, which leads us into this potentially bad news for fans with tickets for the 18th:

"My satellite dish system has an onscreen guide on which you can see what is going to be on 7 or 8 days in advance. Right now, it says that the Cure are going to be on the episode of Craig Kilborn that airs on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19th. Now, I don't know if Kilborn tapes a day in advance (which, of course, would be the 18th that everyone keeps talking about), OR if the Cure will actually be taping in the Kilborn studio on the afternoon of the 19th, OR if my satellite provider is just plain wrong. I guess I'll record both nights just to be sure."

Update: TVguide.com lists them on the 18th as well, so the taping is most likely to be on the afternoon of the 18th at 4:30pm.

Update: Tom provides the most likely explanation for the confusion about the date:

"I think I know why there is confusion regarding the exact date the Cure will be on the Late Late Show w/Craig Kilborn.

The show taped on Thursday 9/18 will not be broadcast until 12:30 AM Eastern time, which is just AFTER MIDNIGHT Thursday night. Most people consider that to be "late Thursday night", but technically it is Friday! That is why the TV listings show the date as Friday 9/19.

I don't have any inside contact at the show. I just know that I myself have misread those TV listings once before for Kilborn's show, and ended up tuning in to the show only to find that a band I wanted to see had been on the previous night.

As confirmation, I checked www.rockontv.com. The info at that website for the show says the Cure will be on at 12:30am Friday, which to most of us is late Thursday night.

    Hope this ends the confusion.

Also, rockontv.com reports that the Cure's 1996 Saturday Night Live appearance will be shown on Comedy Central 9/18 at 2pm ET, and 9/21 at 4:30pm ET."

(Thanks Eric, Mary, Tom and everyone else who wrote in about the time issue)

  • For those who still haven't heard the Just Jack mix of 'Snowflakes/Lullaby', here's your chance:
  • "I visited your website and though that, because you are interested in the Cure, you might like to hear a new Cure-related song.

It's a bootleg remix which clashes a song called "Snowflakes" by Just Jack against the Cure's classic "Lullaby". The remix has been officially approved by Robert Smith.

Download the MP3 for free at:

  • "On the L.A. radiostation STAR 98.7 (unfortunately, a pretty mainstream station), they held a singer/songwriter contest yesterday with local unsigned talent competing to win $10,000 towards a recording session (in a similar spirit to American Idol). This first group of five singers each had to play a cover version and then voters can log on and vote for their favorite. One singer named Amy Cook did a stripped down cover of "Love Song." Although it was quite different from the Cure, it sounded amazing! If any Cure fans want to support her or check out her performance, go to www.star987.com and listen/watch her performance and vote for her. They're only accepting votes online through the end of Friday, September 12th."

    (Thanks Jeff)

"I was just looking around through the MP3.com charts a day ago and I stumbled upon a fairly simple, but pretty cover of "Untitled". It sounds really different, but at the same time seems pretty true to the original. It's hard to explain. If any one is interested, MP3.com: Twilight Garden "

    (Thanks Joel M.)

"My name is Alex and I'm writing to you about a few cure songs I re-created years ago on my Korg M1 just out of devotion (and cause I had no job...)

Anyways, I like your site a lot and I thought it might be cool if you check those songs out and should you find them at all interesting maybe you could put a link on your site or something. See I'm no good at web designing and there's already so many cool sites out there. I did manage though to put the songs on the web. It's not pretty or nothing just a plain index of songs.

  • The Cure are listed as appearing on the Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn on Sept. 18th. No official confirmation yet, but if you are going to be in the area, it couldn't hurt to request tickets for that night's taping.
  • Here's the ticket request info from the Kilborn website:

"THE LATE LATE SHOW tapes in front of a live studio audience from Monday to Friday at CBS Television City in Los Angeles, California

Click here to request tickets for THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH CRAIG KILBORN online!

  • Curespotting:
  • "One of the alternative music channels in the UK called The Amp has an hour-long show every week named "Fired and Inspired", where an artist talks about their musical influences.

This week's show featured Tim Burgess of The Charlatans (or The Charlatans UK as they are known in the US) and who has just released a solo album.

Tim's comments (and some parts of the videos shown) were:

"I'm just getting back into some of The Cure's records that I have't listened to for years" (The Hanging Garden video was shown).

"I also really like The Lovecats and The Walk" (guess which videos were shown...).

"I remember when Hot Hot Hot came out as a single, I wasn't really that much into it at the time, but I've just got The Greatest Hits by them and there's some tracks on there that are brilliant. I like Disintegration as well" (Lullaby was shown).

Also, as a follow up to Ryan's story about Audioslave playing Fascination Street live; I've been scouring the Audioslave websites trying to find an mp3 (no luck so far, goddamnit...), however there are a few reports about the song being played live. I can't work out if they only played this at one show or more than one, but apparently Perry Farrell of Jane's Addicition also joined Audioslave on stage and sang the song along with Chris Cornell (apparently with the lyrics taped to a monitor in front of them!). Thought that might interest some people."

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

"Tonight, there was a show on German Television (RTL) which mentioned the most successful albums in Germany ever. The system was the following one: a week at the top of the charts gave 10 points, place two gave nine points etc... and place 10 gave one point.

They showed clips to the 50 most successful ones and made a list up to place 2000. Number One was (of course?) the Beatles, but The Cure were at least four times in the list: Disintegration (384), Kiss me kiss me kiss me (1069), Bloodflowers (1456) and Wish (1514)."

"just saw the complete "a forest" - clip on german musictelevision VIVA 2. Not too bad(the video) and Robert very typically styled, of course all in black... But I still can´t understand what Robert´s reason was to support such a boring and redundant coverversion..."

"During all August, in the prgramm entitled "Maxi 80: Los grandes temas de los 80 en versión maxi" (braodcasted 1:00-3:00 at nights) from the Spanish radio station named M80 Radio, The Cure have been one of the bands which had been broadcasted almost every single day; the most popular songs by them in this programm, have been Lovesong, Lullaby, and Close to Me, though The Lovecats have also been heard."

    (Thanks Sharon)

"In the September edition of TNT magazine uk. (a free magazine aimed at independent travellers) an article named sounds of the 80's discussed the bands that "rocked our world in the 1980's". The office poll named "coffin-rockers" the cure as best band. (although Wham were given the ultimate 80's tune with Wake me up before you go-go)! They also suggested that the office poll was all wrong, and to email the "80's choons" to grabs@tntmag.co.uk to put it right!"

  • An update on what happened at the Cure Party in Mexico and other news:
  • "Talking about the CURE party the highlight, no doubt, was the phone call from London of Robert, about 3 minutes long, he said he was happy for the CURE party and again HE PROMISES TO PLAY AT MEXICO CITY IN 2004, and he would like to be at the party but he can't because the CURE IS RECORDING THE NEW ALBUM.

The bad matters: Only played the dvd DISINTEGRATION set except UNTITLED. They played just songs from STARING AT THE SEA & THE HEAD ON THE DOOR. There was a cover band (awful) THEY PLAYED SOME SONGS BUT ALL SOUNDS PRETTY HORRIBLE. They give away an AUTOGRAPHED GUITAR FOR ROBERT, the contest was the person with the most look-like ROBERT SMITH will win. None based-THE CURE-criterion to pick the winner. Also, at the lobby, they give you a little paper, if the paper was blank you don't win but if it has printed DVD you win a trilogy. Again, terribly wrong organization. The party began 10.00 pm and finished 00.30.

In other news at www.esto.com.mx, a Mexico City sports-news paper, on 23th August, they had a little digest of the CURE party and ROBERT´s phone call.

The 31st August at 20.00 hrs. on the AM frequency TRACK 1320, www.track1320.com.mx, in the program "PROYECCION, the records that changed the history of rock", they played STARING AT THE SEA.

In ads from DIRECTV and CABLEVISION at México City they announce the next transmisions of CURE concerts, no other words about it, but, i think it will be the TRILOGY tv special.

The TRILOGY DVD is for more than 2 months #1 at www.mixup.com.mx

The Mexican rock magazine La Mosca August issue, www.lamosca.com.mx had a review of the TRILOGY, they gave a 10 to the concert and 8 to the extras."

    (Thanks Jorge)

Jorge also sent in the interview with Robert from Rolling Stone (Mexico), and I will have that on the Interviews page later tonight or tomorrow.

  • New article about Lol and his band Levinhurst:
  • "Here is a transscription of a small article on the Gaffa website, Gaffa is a monthly free music-magazine her in Denmark, as well as the link to the article itself:

    Lol Tolhurst in electronic duo

The cofounder of The Cure on the way with new material

    By Martin Nielsen

Laurence "Lol" Tolhurst formed The Cure together with Robert Smith and worked as the band’s drummer and keybordplayer for many years

Now Tolhurst has planned to release a new album with the title: "Perfect Life" on the 28th of October, as reported by the website Anti-Music Network. The album is being released under the name of Levenhurst, which covers over Cindy Levinson and Tolhurst himself.

Tolhurst is in charge of keybords and electronic gear, while his wife Cindy features on vocal. On the Album they get help from the multi-instrumentalist Dayton Borders, as well

The cure led a chemical unhealthy lifestyle in the eighties, especially under the recording of the masterpiece "Pornography" in 1982, and after a while Tolhurst began to fall apart, as a result of his abuse of drugs and alcohol. After "Pornography" Tolhurst changed to keybords.

After some years marked by heavy abuse of alcohol as well as cruel practical jokes from the other bandmembers, he was pretty much out of he’s senses, and there wasn’t much left of his frienship with Robert Smith. He left the band after the "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" album in 1987, and later on, sued Smith.

After some time Lol started the project "Presence" , which made a single album, "inside", in 1993, after which Tolhurst moved to Los Angeles.

This year, by the way, marks the 25th jubilee, which makes them entitled to possible admission in the Rock an Roll of Fame.

Musical Editorializing 8/30/2003 - New York City

    hey,

i heard that kroq in l.a is having a big outdoor concert with interpol and the cure and etc and none of the 'cookie-monster/rape-rock/can't-tell-them-apart/nu-metal' bands. is that true? is this the death knell for all of those angry white nu metal bands that are kind of indestinguishable from each other? that is/was a trend that has gone on for way too long. there was something kind of interesting about the nu-metal scene when it rose to popularity many years ago with korn and tool and etc. but for the last few years it's just seemed like angrywhiteguy after angrywhiteguy after angrywhiteguy ad infinitum etc. i like some of the heavy/hard bands. queens of the stone age are great. staind have some good songs. system of a down are terrific. and some others, too. but so much of it just seems so formulaic and reactionary and pedestrian. so if it's on it's last legs, good. it's time for a change. and if it means that some of these modern-rock stations are going to stop playing rape-rock and start playing interpol and the cure and the yeah yeah yeah's and so on and etc, well then i might actually turn on my radio every once in a while. ok, that's all of my musical editorializing for today.

    thanks

    moby the loudmouth"
