  • The Cure have apparently signed with Artist Direct Records in the U.S. The album is said to be in "pre-production" right now, with studio work scheduled for Dec. Here's a bit more about the label:
  • ABOUT ARTISTdirect, Inc.

ARTISTdirect Records is a co-venture between ARTISTdirect, Inc. and Ted Field, one of the most successful executives in the entertainment industry. Launched in the summer of 2001, ARTISTdirect Records' talent roster includes a diverse range of hip-hop, rap, alternative, and rock artists such as Custom, NAAM Brigade, The Blood Brothers, Mad at Gravity, No Good, Pokafase, and Phats Bossi. ARTISTdirect Records has a distribution agreement in North America with BMG, who also has a license for territories around the globe. ARTISTdirect Records is affiliated with ARTISTdirect, Inc. (Nasdaq: ARTD), a music and media company that combines an online music network with integrated offline assets to provide a single-stop solution for music fans, artists, labels, and advertisers.

Ross Robinson (The Cure's new producer) also has his own imprint label with them called I AM Recordings.

  • More info for the German shows:

"I found a website that is offering cheap flights to Hamburg: www.airberlin.com The site can be accessed in German or English. I have booked direct flights (Stansted/Hamburg return), outward Fri 8th return Sun 10th. The price including taxes etc was £50 each (about half the price of any others I could find). As the company is call Air Berlin I guess they have similar deals to Berlin although I haven't checked as work commitments are preventing me going to the Berlin shows."

    (Thanks Simon)

  • More hotel info for the German shows:
  • "Accomodation info Berlin

Living myself right in that neighbourhood I would recomend the district of Friedrichshain as a good choice to stay at for foreign Cure- fans. From the nearest station "Warschauer Strasse" it takes only about 10 minutes by underground to "Möckernbrücke" station where the Tempodrom is situated. I found the following informations on reasonable accomodation in Friedrichshain:

Hostel Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany Warschauer Strasse 57, 10243, Berlin, Germany

Our Hostel is situated right in the fast and daily changing city centre of Berlin: in the district called "Friedrichshain". You are right in the middle of all sights, nightlife and culture! The coulored remains of the wall, the "East side gallery", are as easily reached as the new Government Quarter, the Brandenburg Gate and lots of international restaurants and clubs.

We may you offer very quite single, double and triple rooms located at a typical Berlin inner courtyard. Every room has twin beds, a desk, TV and its own bathroom with shower and WC. The Hostel Friedrichshain provides a completely equipped kitchen on every floor, a conference room, parking lots and a cosy lounge area.

Please do not hestitate to ask our "insiders" for help to organize your Berlin trip. We are looking forward to turning your stay into a unique, unforgettable experience.

Please note that payment is cash only on arrival. Credit cards will be accepted from June

In Hamburg there are two of them and in Berlin 5 or 6. They speak english and they are very friendly !!!

Try it and tell it other fans !!!"

    (Thanks Thomas)

And can anyone help Sven & Deborah with this:

"We were wondering if maybe some Cure fans- people from Hamburg-people who know their way 'round there, can tell us how far train/bus-stops-stations are from the Colorline Arena.. and if there are people from Belgium going to the November 9 show and know a good way to travel... all help is More than welcome."

Ivy Cover the Cure, Go-Betweens on New LP

Ponce de Leon finally stumbles across Fountain of Wayne in bargain bin of Tampa-area Vinyl Fever Ray Suzuki reports: New York City's Ivy pay tribute to nearly a dozen influences on Guestroom, their fourth album and debut for Chicago's Minty Fresh label. Ivy, which features Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, French siren Dominique Durand, and Andy Chase, actually recorded half of the collection during recent sessions at New York's Stratosphere Sound, while the other five covers are culled from "limited-edition singles, compilations, or soundtracks" spanning the group's eight-year history.

    Tracklist:

01 Let's Go To Bed [The Cure]

    02 Kite [Nick Heyward]

    03 Say Goodbye [Papas Fritas]

04 Streets Of Your Town [The Go-Betweens]

05 I Don't Know Why I Love You [House of Love]

06 Only A Fool Would Say That [Steely Dan]

07 Digging Your Scene [Blow Monkeys]

    08 L'Anamour [Serge Gainsbourg]

09 Be My Baby [The Ronettes]

10 I Guess I'm Just A Little Too Sensitive [Orange Juice]

Durand, who is expecting a child in December (she and Chase are married), will not be available for a full-blown tour behind Guestroom, but will be playing a few in-stores and radio sessions in New York and Los Angeles next month. In the meantime, Fountains of Wayne continue to amass songs for their third album, which they plan to shop to prospective labels once it's completed. .

  • Anyone want to try this?:
  • "Your own Cure picture show all over Paris?

Right now, there's a great project running in Paris called Blinkenlights Arcade. What they do is use the front of the Bibliotheque Nationale for computer-screen-like projections - made with lights behind the windows. The fun part of it is that they have developped their own painting programme which makes it very easy to design and create your own animations, post them.. and watch it go on the big screen - either via live-stream or from the opposite Seine bank. Suitable for love messages, 17sec/Faith covers, Wish logos, octopusses, even socks!.. need any further inspirations?

The project is still running until 5th/6th Oct. The website is: http://www.blinkenlights.de/arcade/index.en.html"

  • Curespotting:
  • "From Popbitch:

Robert Smith from the Cure uses a sprinkling of vanilla essence on his jumpers when they go a bit smelly."

    (Thanks Hugh)

"This past Monday I was watching the TV show called Queer As Folk. Not to my surprise, two of the characters, Michael & Brian, who are best friends, were reminiscing about their high school years. I believe Michael said to Brian... "Remember senior year in high school? Our band?" Brian chuckles. Michael continues... "You were supposed to be the next Robert Smith." Every now and then, this show will have a curespotting. Maybe someone is a fan? "

    (Thanks M)

"Just a little curiosity: on the new casiotone for the painfully alone's album ("pocket symphonies for lonesome subway cars") there's a track, called "destroy the evidence", in which you can hear these nice words: "i've got seventeen seconds on in my room tonight, and when that's over i've got faith, so alright , alright, alright.....". The album is absolutely gorgeous anyway. "

    (Thanks Gianpietro)

"On Good Day Live <fox's morning entertainment chat show> in the US they played friday i'm in love as they went to a commercial break. They had played mint car as going to break a few weeks ago. "

    (Thanks Runnerboi18)

And I'll throw in my own Curespotting. I was listening to the WWL 870 AM coverage of tropical storm Isidore and the flooding that was taking place all across New Orleans & the surrounding areas on wednesday, and Close To Me (Closer mix) was used as "bumper" music several times during the day. It was pretty funny to think of that video and then look out your window to see a lake where your street used to be. Sadly, there were no sightings of a saxaphone-playing octopus. ; )

"Here is a small collection with links for Hamburg (hotels, night clubbing). Please recognize we did not check all of them by ourselves :). We tried to find some pages in english.

This link is for one of the most vivid-multicultural-heterogen neighbourhoods in Hamburg (as we think): "Schanzenviertel". Lots of different restaurants, coffee & snack bars, record shops (some luck needed for finding some cure rareties!). Easy to reach with public transport.

    Accomodation:

    www.schanzenstern.de

"schanzenstern"; also nice restaurant with vegetarian as well

(correction: "Just wanted to inform you that the exchange rate of DM/Euro is not 1DM=1,95583 EUR but 1,95583DM=1EUR. Not that our friends wonder about the prices." Thanks Alex)

"SHOW TICKETS: Just wanted to let you know that I've received two tickets here at my home in NY for the first Berlin show. They arrived today; I ordered them last Thursday online using www.eventim.de. I had good luck with them last time I went to Germany to see the Cure, and they came through again. My tickets for the second show are confirmed (I ordered them separately) and will be on their way soon. I highly recommend this service. They take credit cards online, confirm immediately by e-mail, and ship to the US via UPS for about $25.00. Each pair of tickets worked out to be about $100 with shipping. Still cheaper than going to most shows here!

TRANSLATION: Getting around these German ticket sites has been a lot easier using the Universal Translator at www.freetranslation.com. Sometimes the webpage doesn't come up, but if you keep trying, it will show up eventually. I have no idea why it does that. Anyway, the translations are really good, so you get a pretty clear sense of what you need to know.

AIRLINE TICKETS: Lufthansa is having a 2-for-1 sale. I don't know if it's from everywhere or select departure cities, but it's saving my sister and I a lot of money from New York City. ($732 for both of us as opposed to $500 apiece).

HOSTEL: Is there any consensus on hostelry? I'd like to stay in a hostel with other Curefans. I'm booked into the Circus Hostel at Weinbergsweg, http://www.circus-berlin.de/. It offers private rooms and dorms for around $20 a night, it's near the U-Bahn and has a bar inside it. ;) My arrangements can be changed if anyone has a better idea. Any thoughts? E-mail me privately if you're interested in setting anything up. I'm ahomesick@aol.com. (Yep, "homesick" as in the song--the main reason I'm making this trip!) "

"I was looking over the October 2002 issue of YM magazine with that poppy girl Avril Lavin. To my very surprise I saw this by a picture of a girl dressed Goth:

Thank Goth! In a month when spooky darkness prevails, the Goth trend makes a lot of sense. This romantic yet sinister look was first popularized by fans of the 1980s band THE CURE.

Short, I know, but I get so happy when I see the band's name in american [teenage?!!] magazines! "

    (Thanks StratRaider)

"I was looking at some Christian Goth site on a section about problems only Christian Goths have and I saw a reference of Robert Smith. If you scroll down to where it says PROBLEMS IN CHURCH, on the dash # 6, it says: """"- you ran out of waterproof eyeliner, and after a little bit of a drizz during praise and worship your eyes make you look like frankenstein (or the bride of) [hmm..or robert smith on a bad makeup day!]"""" the site is here http://www.christiangoth.com/problems.html"

  • Be sure to check out the 100% Sky page for an excellent review of the Porl Thompson exhibit and some photos as well. Also, here are a few other items related to the exhibit. First, Jen sends her thanks to everyone:
  • "Dearest Chain of Flowers Web Ring

Thank you so very much for being SO KIND to Porl and handing out flyers all over the world. Due to your love of the music and the art, we have had contact from people as close as five minutes away and as far away as 22 hours via plane. If it were not for your efforts - this exhibit would not have had the reach and scope that it now does! Hopefully I will meet personally all of you who will make the pilgirmage to see the most wonderful dreamscpaes of art that are hanging upon our lovely old gallery walls. Everyone is correct that the pictures do not do the actual art justice. Porl's love of texture is far better viewed in person. It is best to come visit us and get lost in these works yourself.

Once again thank you to all who helped out. Anyone interested in visiting, purchasing or ordering catalogues for 100% sky please feel free to contact me at the gallery - www.homerwatson.on.ca or at eternalart@rogers.com and it will be my pleasure to help you in any way I can.

    Lots of Love,

Ms. Jennifer Kelland Wood, Guest Curator"

(And Thank You Jennifer, for all of your hard work in putting this together)

"Just a quick reminder I forgot when I posted my review-Cure fans may be interested in a booklet from the art show. They are $30 plus tax (canadian). The booklet showcases all of the pieces from 100% SKY exhibit, with photos of Porl working in his studio. I am sure they can be obtained by writing Jennifer Wood at the Homer Watson. They are definately of the highest quality and a great way to see Porl's art if you cannot attend."

    (Thanks Jo)

"Porl was interviewed by Bill Welychka on Much More Music yesterday at the exhibit. I only caught the last minute of it while I was flipping the channels. They showed the Cure album covers that he did and some of his art at the exhibit.

I checked the website of Much More Music. Unfortnately, it only has an introduction of the interview.

    http://www.muchmoremusic.com/theloop/thursday.asp

Did anyone see the interview to fill us in?"

    (Thanks Judy)

  • Ticket update:
  • "For those who are still scraping their way... Try Koka 36 ! It's in german but they have an international fax number, they answer the phone, are very nice, and most of all, they do have tickets for Berlin. Good luck."

    (Thanks Olivier)

"I ordered tickets from KOKA36.de and I have to say that they are very polite and they offer great services.I sent them an email 2 weeks ago and they answered me within 2 days. Then i sent them a fax with my personal data,my VISA card details and my tickets order. The following morning they called me in my house in Athens and told me that they are sending the tickets.I received my tickets 3 days later. So,you may pay some more Euros but your tickets are in a few days "safe" in your hands! "

    (Thanks Costas)

"It's still possible to order Tickets through www.kartenhaus.de they still have Tickets for the Standing Area for the Second Night in Berlin 12.11.2002. But I think you gotta be quick as at lunchtime today they had tickets for the 11.11.2002 and are now sold out (that´s regarding STANDING AREA). There are also Tickets left for the FIRST and SECOND Night in Berlin....for the Upper Seated Area... AND they got Ticktes for all Areas in HAMBURG!

www.koka36.de is still selling Tickets for all shows as well ;o) Good Luck to everyone!!!

I did order my Tickets for Hamburg with Karsten Jahnke and NEVER received a confirmation mail, but instead I received the Tickets last Thursday!!!! (12.9.2002) "

    (Thanks Strangie)

"I ordered my Cure Tickets for the Hamburg show through www.kartenhaus.de who gave a very good service. Within half an hour email confirmation and the tickets were sent two days after (to Belgium). I checked the website and they have lelft: hamburg 9-nov: sitting and standing berlin 11-nov: sitting only berlin 12-nov: sitting and standing I would recommend them to people if they're still looking for tickets."

    (Thanks Evelyne)

"After all those bad experiences I have to say that my order with KJ went perfectly fine. I ordered two standings for the Hamburg-show on the Sat the news broke and added a second order for one ticket - same show on the next day (Sunday). I called them to have the order confirmed, after I got a confirmation mail only for two tickets on Monday and got three tickets two days later. So, although they might have got confused because of my order they didn't. Just to let you know that there might have been some trouble, but not EVERYTHING went wrong."

    (Thanks Michael)

"Now, suddenly, there are standing tickets available for both nights in Berlin , at www.kartenhaus.de !"

    (Thanks Alenka)

"Hope everyone has managed to get their tickets sorted out. I eventually got a reply from the infamous ticket dealers, but by then i had got a ticket from one of the other sources. They were exceptionally unprofessional in their reply to my message. I mean c'mon how long does it take to reply to an order. Sounds like they have 1 person to deal with 1000 orders. I rang up one of the other sources and got my tickets almost immediately."

    (Thanks Justin)

"The Cure entered the eventime tickets chart at # 8."

    (Thanks David)

  • New ad for Hamburg:
  • "In today's (Sept. 18th) issue of the HAMBURGER ABENDBLATT is a new ad for the Hamburg show. It's not from the promoter but a special ad from the paper itself to promote the show. They are also selling tickets but only in their office in Hamburg, not via phone or internet. The tickets are cheaper than anywhere else because they take no service charge for the tickets."

  • Can anyone recommend some hotels for fans to stay in that are close to the venues in Hamburg and Germany? Also, which airport is closest to the shows in Berlin?

  • Curespotting:
  • "Today on french TV channel M6, in the program '80 à l'heure' (about the 80's) they talked about the year 1986 and had a brief report on The Cure: extracts of videos (lovecats; in between days; lullaby; boys don't cry; a forest), and live extracts (in crawley from 'Staring at the sea'; killing an arab 79?; an extract from 'in Orange'; close to me Accoustic Hits; out of this world). Also, they talked about how they started, Hansa, the letter from Polydor, their early dark years and later pop stuff although they still use dark lyrics, the massive Head on the Door hit, that their successful years were now long gone, and about their sound and original black look. In a brief interview (was it recorded before Les Vieilles Charrues festival? He looked really well and happy), Robert explained that it was just like theatre, he doesn't usually wears make up, but just feel more confident with it when on stage (where he was going to go after the interview). He also explained that they were a trio at first and beacuse of the lack of technic of Lol with drums thay had to adapt themselves and thus sounded different. Otherwise they would have sounded like any other band. He said also something about the pressure and success and feels OK with it now (smiling) maybe because they're less successful nowadays.

Nothing about what's to come. Only lasted 3 minutes but always nice to see them.

Also, In the french weekly music paper 'Les Inrockuptibles' #355, Sept 11-17, in an article about what's to come this autumn/winter, they write page 58: "(...)the hottest bands of the moment still seem to be The Cure, Echo & Bunnymen, Fall, New Order, Certain Ratio, or Talking Heads. (...) The Cure will equally be a safe value of this fall (=valeur refuge de cette rentrée), where one should see Robert Smith and the band in Paris for a pharaonic (=gigantic) concert.

note: with this issue they gave away a free cd on which, among other, is a track by Low (not very good track though) and a funny cover of the Banshees''Happy House' by french electro-pop band Ginger-Ale."

    (Thanks Fabien G)

  • There have been quite a few complaints lately about Karsten Jahnke and their terrible handling of the tickets for the Nov. shows:
  • "I just wanted to warn everyone of the ticket ordering possibility on the Karsten Jahnke homepage. I ordered standing room tickets as early as last Tuesday, and until this very day 6 days later I received no comfirmation. So I phoned them today to ask what has happened and they told me that they´re administering the orders in order of income and that mine is still a few days (!!!) away. So far so good, but maybe they should hire more than one person to do that job. Then they told me that I won´t get any standing room tickets, they only have seated places left, and if I were unlucky, even those would be gone. When I started to get really furious, they couldn´t even understand what the problem was. I told them that they at least could shut down the ordering page if they know that any new orders have not the slightest chance of being succesful, but they claimed that they cannot do this for some reason. So anyone trying to order tickets for seats for the Berlin shows: Your chances are very little of getting one, even if the homepage doesn´t give a hint in that direction and claims that only the standing room is sold out. The basic problem is that they accept orders, people think that they got the tickets by then, then they don´t answer for a week before informing you that they don´t have anything left. Meanwhile the tickets sold out at all the other ticket services, so you´re left with nothing. By the way: The large German internet service getgo also has Cure tickets available: www.getgo.de They handle it professionaly by stating on the website that they have no influence on whether you´ll get standing room or seats."

    (Thanks Christian)

  • Meanwhile, here's a ticket update, for whatever good it does:
  • "I just wanted to let you know that I just bought standing tickets for the first Berlin show at www.kartenhaus.de ! Standing tickets for the second night are also available there!!! So they're not over...Kartenhaus has still all the tickets for the both shows in Berlin!!!"

    (Thanks Francesco)

"A few standing area tickets for 1st AND second night in berlin still seem to be available at the tempodrom location itself.bought mine today."

    (Thanks Gudrun.)

"Just to let everybody know, there are still standing tix for the 2. berlin gig. try http://www.koka36.de/eventdetails.php?veranstaltung=the%20cure. unfortunately the site is only in german. if you want tix in the standing area you have the press the "12.11.2002 DI 20.00 Uhr 37.40 € innenraum stehplatz bestellen" button. good luck!"

    (Thanks Marie)

  • Cure at Vieilles Charrues on French tv:
  • "I just wanted to let you know that the Cure concert of the Vieilles Charrues this summer will be broadcasted on the French music channel MCM on September 25th at 0h45 local time. The show is supposed to last until 1h45 in the morning. In the TV guide, they announced it by "this show is elegant and deliciously electrifying. And guess what : The Cure are still there (!) and intend to do a new album soon". Lucky French Cure fans!"

    (Thanks Philippe)

  • Some reports from Porl Thompson's 100% Sky exhibit at the Homer Watson Gallery:
  • "I just wanted to tell everyone that I attended the opening of Porl's art exhibit 100% SKY at the Homer Watson. If you get the chance to attend it would be a worthwhile trip. The internet does not do justice to the amazing color and texture he uses in his work. I was so very impressed with the exhibit. It was like being in a beautiful, warm, colorful dream. Everything was amazing!!!! Many thanks to Porl (and to Jennifer Wood) for this wonderful opportunity to experience his work. It was definately worth the drive from Indiana."

    (Thanks Jo)

"I was very very fortunate to only live an hour away from the Porl's exhibit in Kitchener. I was also very fortunate to have arrived at the door of the gallery just as Porl was walking out. He said Hi generally to the few of us on the porch and repeated his "Hello" directly to me. I just simply said "Hello" I was so taken in by the moment. I didn't say more or take a picture since I simply thought Porl was going for lunch and will return later, where at that point I would take a picture or speak to him. It turned out that Porl was heading back to New York City and that was my only opportunity to see him in person.

My deepest regrets to Jo and Andrea who traveled all the way from Indiana to see the exhibit and missed the chance to meet Porl. Porl left the gallery so quickly and quietly. It was a pleasure meeting Jo and Andrea who support my belief that Cure fans are the nicest people in the world and I hope we are able to stay in touch.

Pictures of the artwork themselves were not allowed although I did take a pictures outside the gallery and through the window you can see a bit of Porl's art (to be sent in later). You can visit Porl's web site to see his artwork, but truthfully you have to see the art in person. There is a lot of texture and layering in Porl's art that just doesn't translate through a picture. Some of the pieces of art Porl actually did the night before the opening in the gallery itself. Simply amazing.

I had a wonderful time and a big big thank you to Jennifer of Homer Watson House for taking the initiative and asking Porl if he would like to show his art at her gallery. Of course a huge thank you to Porl for allowing us the opportunity to see his art and saying Hello to me :) "

    (Thanks Maria)

I'll have more tomorrow, along with some photos of the exhibit and of Porl.

  • Curespotting:
  • "another shakira curespotting: on the august 2002 uk issue of mojo there is an article asking questions about her favourite music. a scan of that page can be seen in the depeche mode site/news/magazines (that's where i found it). anyway, here are the q&a:

What music are you currently grooving to?

I love the old school rock'n'roll : Led Zeppelin, The Cure, The Police, Janis Joplin. I never get tired of listening to their music and on any given day I will at least play one of their albums.

    [other questions]

What is your favourite Saturday night record?

The Cure's Greatest Hits [Galore - The singles 1987-1997. I wouldn't be able to pick one album of theirs in particular so I'd play that one to get me in the mood.

    [other questions]"

    (Thanks Pietro)

"Don't remember anyone reporting this Cure sighting yet:

In a recently published book, An Intimate Look at the Night Sky, the author, Chet Raymo, quotes from the Cure's "Jupiter Crash" in Chapter 6 on comets and meteors. (Highly recommended reading, as it's beautifully written and profoundly thought provoking.) "

    (Thanks Chi)

"Today around 11.30am, french radio station "france culture" played "the figurehead" just before a program called "le livre du jour" (the book of the day). A great surprise, quite unexpected on this station. The programs are oriented into culture and knowledges in general and the music on the station is more oriented into jazz, experimental and classical music. I wonder if the studio version of the figurehead was ever aired by a french FM station... Here is the link to the real audio archive of the program (including the figurehead)."

  • Ticket update:
  • "Standing area tickets for the second night in berlin are now also sold out at kartenhaus. Also, cure went up to #1 @ the kartenhaus top selling ticket charts."

    (Thanks Jan)

But are they really sold out? Maybe not:

"Iwas reading the news update about the ticket update saying the standing tickets had sold out. i thought you might be interested to know that karsten-jahnke took about 4 days to confirm that tickets had been reserved. during that time i was unsure whether i had tickets reserved so i bought mine from kartenhaus (wouldn't want to miss out!). cure fans i know also did the same so i imagine that the standing tickets have not sold out for berlin because of the fans that had reserved tickets at karsten-jahnke then got them from kartenhaus.

so maybe karsten-jahnke will find they have more standing tickets for sale when they find out that some fans do not continue with the money transfer for the tickets they reserved.

    (Thanks Nige)

  • Billboard has picked up on the Nov. shows:
  • found this on billboard.com (http://www.billboard.com/billboard/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1688541):

"According to its official web site, the Cure will perform two "Trilogy Concerts" later this year in Europe to be recorded for a future live DVD. The shows, set for Berlin's intimate Tempodrom on November 11th and 12th, will see the band perform three albums in their entirety: 1982's Pornography, 1989's Disintegration and the band last studio effort in 2000, "Bloodflowers." A twenty-minute intermission will follow each album's performance.

The band will precede these concerts with a show at Hamburg's Colorline Arena on Nov. 9, marking the first concert to be held at the new facility."

    (Thanks Jeff)

  • 'Maybe Someday'(hybrid mix) on The RemiXFM2:
  • "Late last year, bootlegs were the new black and London's alternative radio station Xfm brought out an exciting album released on the back of the Remix show. A lot of people call it "bedroom remixing" or the more dangerous and sexy title of "bootlegging", and if you still don’t know have a clue think Bootylicious Vs Smells Like Teen Spirit. The Remix 1 album was the first of its kind to celebrate the meeting of rock and decks and was a kick-ass album! Fast forward two seasons and Electroclash and Bootlegs are still going strong. If this is your bag then you won’t want to miss Remix 2, released through Virgin records in October 2002. This double CD release contains the latest remixes, bootlegs and studio rarities of artists ranging from The Cure to Peaches, Placebo to Soulwax. Quite frankly, this shit is the bomb! As The Cure's "Maybe Someday" track will be featured on the album, it would be nice if you could help us out to spread the word and let music fans, especially fellow Cure fans, know about the latest remix of this brilliant track!

To find out the tracklistings and other cool stuff about the album, go to http://www.xfm.co.uk/theremixalbum and check it out!

    Sept. 10th

  • If you missed it, I put up an mp3 of the complete Vieilles Charrues press conference (from July 20th, 2002) yesterday. I know it's very difficult to get in and download it, so I've transcribed it for everyone:
  • They start the press conference by presenting Robert with some football jerseys for him and the rest of the band.

Press: "Hello Robert, thank you for being here. Just before talking about these summer Cure concerts, let's speak about the future. I know that there is a new album planned, I know that you are going to record it in studio in Sept. or Oct., I don't know. Can you just tell us about this new album?

Robert: "We're scheduled to start recording the new album in Oct., but just this week we've been offered a couple of very interesting things in, well 3 actually, one in France, one in England, and one in Germany, so if we do those, we'll probably start recording in Nov., Dec. and Jan., and hopefully finish by Feb. of next year."

Press: "What does it sound like at the moment?"

Robert: "It's heavy rock.....It is, seriously."

    Press: "Pardon? Could you repeat?"

    Robert: "It's heavy rock."

    Translator: "Heavy rock?"

    Robert: "Yeah."

Press: "What do you know about Brittany, especially the festival here? And if you knew anything about it before coming, what did you think about it and what do you now?"

Robert: "What do I know about Brittany? The very first holiday abroad I ever had with my family was actually in Brittany. I stayed in, in fact I stayed in Dinard(?) which is where we're staying tonight. I just remember it being sunny, beautiful sea and beaches, and lots of peaches. It was the first time I'd ever had a peach actually, when I came to Brittany. I'm surprised we've never played this festival before, but even through over 20 years, more than 20 years of The Cure playing in France, I think we've only played in Brittany twice I think. We played Quimper(?) and Caen, that's the only two times."

    Someone corrects Robert about Caen.

Robert: "Isn't it? Is that in Normandy? All right, in that case we've only played once then, in Quimper(?)."

Translator: "I think you played a place called (?)"

Robert: "Oh right, on The Top. Yeah, we have been here twice. It's for the same reason we've only played Cornwall in England twice. It's a long way to go, it's like...It reminds me, it's very much like Cornwall. This festival as we were driving in is almost like going to the Elephant Fair, which is a festival that used to happen in England a few years ago. It's good, it's a nice atmosphere, it suits my personality, Brittany, it's very laid back."

Translator: "It's a very personal question. Seventeen years ago you organized a festival in Greece called Rock In Athens and he has a fantastic memory of your show and did you have any memories yourself of that show?"

Robert: "Rock in Athens in 1985, is that it? Yeah, and the power stopped. It was actually one of the defining moments in The Cure's history, that concert, because the power went off after one or two songs and Boris carried on drumming and I went to the front and the whole crowd started singing, I think Close To Me or something, and when we came off after that we suddenly realized that all these people in Greece knew who we were and they knew the songs, and there was a strong sense that we had taken a step up. I remember that trip to Athens, cause it was the first time...actually I can't say what I was going to say. It was a very memorable trip."

Press: "In the shows you make this summer on the tour, as on the Dream Tour, you don't play many single pop song, but songs darker, less easy for the audience that don't know The Cure a lot. Are you definitely tired of silly pop songs?"

Robert: "Yes...is the easy answer. For the moment I feel much more comfortable playing the, I suppose darker side of what we do. I think in the past we've made a mistake when we've played festivals, we've approached them thinking that 50% of the audience loves The Cure and 50% hates The Cure, so we try to get the 50% that hate The Cure to love The Cure and it's stupid. So this year we're playing to the 50% that loves The Cure and maybe some of the people that hate The Cure will hear the other side of the Cure they've never heard before, and they'll love us. So this way the Cure fans ,I think will, judging by the last 5 that we've done, the 5 festivals so far, the response has been totally different, it's like a Cure show, it feels really good. Like in the past, festivals have always felt slightly unsatisfactory. So I think that the change that happened with Bloodflowers is for good. I think the pop group Cure is kind of finished really. I'm too old."

Translator: "The question was about Trent Reznor. There was that project of a collaboration with Trent Reznor, so where is that project now, is he going to be on the next album or anything?"

Robert: "I've been doing something on my own for like the last two years, and there have been various people involved and one of the people I want to be involved, who hasn't done anything yet, is Trent. But at some point in probably the next, hopefully in the next kind of 6 months, he will do something. There's about...there's eight people that are doing things on my solo album. Six of them have done it, and I'm waiting for two, one of them is Trent, so...I don't know what he's going to do, but...I hope that he will still do something. I mean I sort of know him, but not very well, but I know him well enough to, you know..."

Translator: "So you've been extremely successful, including your personal life and artistic life. Is there anything that makes you dream today?"

Robert: "What for myself, what I want for myself? I think the um...you know I still, I mean even like today, tonight going on stage, I want this to be the best thing I've ever done. That's what motivates me all the time. Whatever I think of what I've already done, it's done, so my motivation is always like the next thing. It's a very um...it's a strange way to live, I know, cause I never feel satisfied with anything, so it's..I'm the wrong person to do this really, cause there are other people that would enjoy my position much more, I'm sure."

Translator:"The question is about the record, the Greatest Hits record, she read somewhere that the record company actually chose the tracks, the numbers, and that you would have made different choices, so what choices would you have made?"

Robert: "No, I chose those, I chose the tracks. Because it was a greatest hits, I thought they were the greatest hits. If it had been a best of, I would have chosen different songs, but it's not a best of The Cure. But it was something that the record companies wanted, and it was the best way that I had to get out of the contract that I was in around the world. So it's not my favorite record."

Translator: "It's a two-fold question. He'd like to know what are those special events which will delay the scheduled time of the album, what are you going to do in September that will delay the Oct. deadline and the other question is, releasing your solo album as a bonus disc for a Cure album, isn't it lowering your own work in a way?"

Robert: <laughs> "It's difficult to say what what we might do, these special events, cause if I do, the surprise will be lost. They're shows, there are 3 shows. But it's what we're going to do in the shows that's special...what we're intending on doing, we're probably going to re-sign with another company, um soon. And to put a full stop to everything we've done...it's like Polydor and Elektra have agreed, at last, to release the b-sides as a box set. So we wanted to do something that was retrospective, so it's in two parts. And one of the things we wanted to do around Halloween, was do some shows that were very...playing things that we've never played before. The b-sides collection is kind of like a hint. And then after Christmas, we were going to do something probably, hopefully, with every ex-member of The Cure, we were going to do like a big concert. And between the two things we are going to make a dvd, so it's sort of like a history of The Cure, with some other stuff like, you know, and probably an interview and I'll comment on...so that's why I wanted to put the album back, cause I wanted to get that done right and then concentrate on something new.

Putting my solo album out with the Cure album is because there's been so much speculation about it, it's been going on for so long, that if I put it out as a solo album, people will think "That's fucking awful". It's like it can't possibly be as good as people think it's going to be. So if it's free with the next Cure album, then people will think...if they don't like it then it doesn't matter, and if they do like it, they'll be getting two good albums for one. The real reason is that it takes all the pressure off me to feel...I've talked and talked about it, and I've been really worried that I'll bring it out and people will sort of go "Is that it?", you know, cause it happens all the time, you hear about an album and it's like, and then you hear it and it's like, it's fucking awful. For me it's kind of a way round a problem, cause I still get to release it, but it's no longer like, you know. And also I suppose, very importantly, I wouldn't have to promote it and I don't really want to do solo stuff, I don't want to do solo shows or do THIS. I should have the fucking band here, it's like they're so lazy."

Translator: "So knowing that you're a football fan, you know, sacrificing to this ancient tradition of antipathy between the English and the French, did you smile when we were elimanited so easily?"

    <Laughter from everyone>

Robert: "Yeah, but it was tinged with sadness, cause I really thought France would be good. I mean everyone thought France would be good. I was looking forward to them being, you know. Zidane's(?) my favorite player and I was looking forward to seeing him play. I smiled, but I felt disappointed. I was much, much happier when Argentina went out. And anyway, the traditional antipathy between the English and the French doesn't exist between The Cure and the French. I'm not very English like that. We hate the Germans, we don't hate the French." <Laughs>

    Translator: "Ok? Thank you."

    Robert: "Merci."

    <Applause>

  • And here's the transcript of the brief interview with Robert from that Arvika Festival special on MTV last week:
  • "On the show they must have previewed about twenty bands that performed over the weekend. The bit with The Cure was right at the end of the one hour show...

(15 second of Shake Dog Shake showed then fades into interview backstage somewhere where both Interviewer and Robert are sat down)

Q: Was there one point, a sort of a turning point where you started feeling that there was more of a future for The Cure than..(Robert interupts by answering)

R: ..Through all the years I've been doing it there has been a number of occasions when I've got to a point where 'that's it', 'it's run it's course' ..and then something happens and probably the first time was right back in '83' I thought that was it. I joined Siouxie and The Banshees, I thought that was going to be my future and again actually in 1998 I thought I didn't really enjoy The Cure anymore. That was the first time ever I didn't really not like being in the group and from that for about a year I'd had enough. But ..umm I wanted to do one last record and that was the Blooflowers album and when we made that and went on tour I just thought I actually like this better than I have ever in my life...

(5 seconds of Shake Dog Shake shown)..

...Q: What's the most important feedback you get as a band ?

R: Well like both Roger and I run our web-site still so we get an awful lot of stuff, there's hundreds of web-sites, there's a huge global kind of like network of Cure fans. We do get an awful lot of honest feedback...

(15 seconds of 'The Kiss' shown) ..

Q: You are practically an unsigned band at the moment which for many bands it's a bad thing. I suspect that for you it is not quite the same traumatic experience as for young bands, quite nice Isn't it ?

R: Yes! Well I've been signed since I was 18 so I've been unsigned now for umm.. coming up it's now about eight months 17 days, 3 hours (laughs).. Yeah! No, I'm enjoying it, the fact that what we're going to do next is exactly what we want and we don't have to ask anyone. It's a really nice feeling ...

(fades into FTEOTDGS for about 15 secs before program ends)"

    (Thanks Steven)

  • The official site has put up the festival setlists in the July and Aug. news archives, and Robert has picked Rome and Budapest as his favorite shows of the tour.

  • Right Lane show canceled:
  • "The Right Lane show on Sept. 13th in Gatesville, Texas has been canceled. The band wants to thank everyone that has replied about the show and visited the website. I will keep updating on upcoming shows and what Cure songs to expect."

    (Thanks Sabrina)

  • Curespotting:
  • "In the October issue of FHM (UK) on page 14 under "Things we did this month", the first entry is "Saw Eighties twerp Gary Numan turned away from the hospitality section of The Cure's Hyde Park Concert". No other mention of the show in the magazine."

    (Thanks Phild)

Correction: Since FHM were not in hospitality, nor even IN the park, it's not surprising that they got this completly wrong. Gary Numan WAS in hospitality and was said to be very entertaining.

    Sept. 9th

  • All of the German shows are now officially on sale through all ticket agencies. See the tour dates page for the links.

  • A bit more on what was supposed to happen with the tickets for the show: The whole idea from the band was that the official site would have a secret coded link that would go up 3 days before Karsten announced the shows, giving fans from all over the world a chance to get tickets before they went on sale locally. Then they had the problems I mentioned before and you know the rest. Hopefully everyone was able to get their tickets ordered in time.
  • Also, about the UK postal code problem at the Jahnke site: even though the site says it hasn't accepted the UK postcode, the order has in fact gone through, so uk fans can go ahead and order now.

(Thanks to the band for helping to clear all of this up)

  • Here's the ad for the Hamburg show from today's "Hamburger Abendblatt":
  • There's also an article about the Hamburg show, which says that the show will be a 3 hour "Greatest Hits" set.

    (Thanks Sascha)

  • Cure tickets are #2:
  • "The Cure came in at #2 @ the kartenhaus top selling ticket charts. it's on the lower right side of the www.kartenhaus.de frontpage. also on the frontpage there is a small article about the cure and a direct link to the tickets."

    (Thanks Jan)

    Sept. 7th

  • The official site has been updated with all of the ticket info and have confirmed the rumors of a Pornography/Disintegration/Bloodflowers setlist for the Berlin shows and that it will be filmed for a "collectors edition" live DVD.
  • So all 3 shows are now officially available from Karsten Jahnke (under the name Summerblue until the official German announcement is made on Monday afternoon), along with the sites I have already mentioned. Also, if you would like to phone in your order with Kartenhaus, here is their number: int. acc code + 49 40 43 59 46.

  • Wondering why this whole ticket thing is a mess and why they are on sale before there's an official announcement from the band? Here's what happened: The German promoter screwed up and put up a live test page where it wasnt too difficult to find. Unfortunately, when the band tested the page, they found that it wouldn't accept english zip/post codes so they decided not to post anything on the official site until it had been corrected, trying to be as fair as possible to british fans. But as you can see, it has all gotten out of hand now and they have decided to make it official, which I assume means an update at the official site very soon.

  • Looks like the Berlin show on the 11th is also on sale now:
  • "The Tickets for the Berlin Show on the 11th of November I ordered through www.koka36.de but they only have Tickets for the 11th..... and they are 37,40 Euro. They will send me and invoice and I have to do a bank transfer when I receive it. The Hamburg Tickets I ordered with Karsten Jahnke and they use cod/pod throught the post. "

    (Thanks Strangie)

  • Tickets for Hamburg are on sale now from http://www.kartenhaus.de. Tickets are 31.20 euro, 33.40 euro and 36.70 euro.
  • (Thanks Markus Jan and Andre)

  • The second Berlin show has now been added to the Summerblue page, confirming the date as Nov. 12th.
  • (Thanks Lars, Dennis, Andre and Jan)

  • Something strange going on at the Karsten Jahnke website. While at first glance it appears that all of the info about The Cure shows has been removed, they have actually just moved it and are using the band name Summerblue to hide it. Here's the ticket info that they have listed:
  • Hamburg (Nov. 9th, 2002)

25,00 Euro Oberrang (bestuhlt) / upper seats

27,00 Euro Innenraum (unbestuhlt) / arena (standing)

30,00 Euro Unterrang (bestuhlt) / lower seats

    Berlin (Nov. 11th & 12th, 2002)

    30,00 Euro Standing (Stehplätze)

    30,01 Euro Reserved Seats (Sitzplätze)

You can order either tickets for standing or reserved seats. Both ticket categories cost 30,00 Euro plus presale fee. Due to our system, we are only able to differentiate both categories if we make two different prices. Please choose: 30,00 Euro for standing or 30,01 Euro for reserved seats. We will of course only charge you the correct amount of 30,00 Euro plus presale fee per ticket.

Customers from abroad will have to pay in advance. As we do not accept credit cards yet, the only possibility for you to order the tickets is to pay by money order. • Some more ticket help and tips for Hamburg and Berlin:
  • "Well, here's a little information how foreign fans can get tickets and where.:

    - on karsten-jahnke.de is no chance to change your country, so i guess it´s the best you call them personally. the number is +49 (40) 41 80 68 (from monday 11am CET). i´m pretty sure they speak english, too.

    - to get tickets via internet check http://www.kartenhaus.de and http://www.getgo.de (they have an english version of their site available). getgo.de doesn´t have the cure in their listing yet, though, so try again on monday.

if you plan to see both concerts and don´t know how to get from hamburg to berlin: we have a good and fast rail network in germany. you can travel by 'inter city express', which is a fast train and needs only about 1 1/2 hours to berlin. check out http://bahn.hafas.de to check times and stations.

and finally, if you need a good place to sleep and want to avoid expensive hotels 'because it´s berlin' check http://www.berlin-economy-hotels.de/hotels_berlin_1.htm and maybe we´ll see you in november :) "

  • Can any of the German fans help all of us out with the ticket situation? What would be the best way for fans ouside of Germany to try and get tickets? Website, phone, etc.? What are the numbers for the various ticket agencies? If you can help with any of this or anything else that might be helpful, please send it in. Thank you!
  • Here's the seating chart for Berlin, which should at least help you figure out which section you want:

  • Karsten Jahnke (I think the info has now been removed) & Kartenhaus have confirmed two shows in Germany:
  • Nov. 9th - Hamburg, Germany (Color Line Arena)

Nov. 11th - Berlin, Germany (Tempodrom)

There was supposed to be a second show in Berlin, but the plans may have changed or they might be waiting for the first night to sell out first. Tickets for both shows will be on sale Sept. 9th according to http://www.kartenhaus.de .

Here's a bit of info about the venues:

"as you were wondering about the size of our new color line arena here in hamburg, i've checked the venues websites:

www.tempodrom.de (part of the berlin tempodrom is the so-called "grosse arena" ("big arena"), which is built like an antique amphitheater and has a capacity of 3.700.)

www.colorline-arena.com (the hamburg color line arena has a capacity of 15.000 visitors. by taking down the gallery the capacity can be reduced to 8.000. also a reconstruction into an amphitheater with a capacity of 3.000 to 4.000 is possible. so i guess the cure might go for the last option.)"

(Thanks Marco, Sascha, Jan, Ingmar, Emil, Alex, Jim, Dennis, Curehere)

  • Here's a report about the Arvika special from MTV:
  • "It wasn't that good they showed 10 second clips from three songs played and in between a very short interview with Robert (3-4 questions I think). "

    (Thanks Steven)

  • And now to answer once and for all, the question everyone really wants to know - What exactly did Simon say at the end of the Hyde Park show? Was the insult directed at Peter Hook, John Lydon or Chris Parry? Well, it can now be said that it was "Peter Hook is a c*nt". And that's 100% confirmed for you. : )

  • Curespotting:
  • "If you surf to Famous Vegetarians: http://www.ivu.org/people/music/index.html and click the -Musicians- Rock, Pop and Classics- link and then go to Robert Smith you'll find this:

    - Smith, Robert Lead singer of The Cure source: Many interviews

    but:

    * Robert Smith's said that Morrissey's the reason for him NOT being vegetarian.

    * Robert Smith allegedly said: "If Morrissey says 'don't eat meat', then I will because I hate Morrissey". "

  • Looks like the three Nov. shows in Germany are one step closer to being finalized:
  • "I have spoken to someone who's working for the german promoter today. Dates are made and will be published soon. "

    (Thanks Sascha)

And could this be one of the venues? I'm not really sure, I imagined it would be somewhere smaller:

"The daily newspaper "Hamburger Abendblatt" (Hamburg, Germany) published an interview September 04, 2002 with concert promoter Karsten Jahnke. He is the one who organizes the Cure shows in Germany. In his very first statement he mentions The Cure as an example of a top band the people likes to listen to. The interesting part of the interview is the question about a brand new venue ("Color Line Arena") that will be opened in Hamburg in November this year and there is no opening act confirmed by now. It could be Phil Collins (the WEA label is the record company which probably organizes the program that day) but Jahnke attached "We also have ONE Band up one´s sleeve but the contracts aren´t signed yet". WHO might this be?"

    (Thanks Eva & Andreas)

"In the September's issue of Polish students' monthly magazine 'Dlaczego?' ('Why?') there's an article about the huge come back of '80's music to clubs. The Cure is mentioned there twice: *The biggest stars (of '80's) are the unforgettable The Cure, Fine Young Cannibals and The Smiths. *The examples of the best backcombed hair are Limahl, members of Depeche Mode and The Cure."

"Two days ago i went to a local furniture shop, and i heard on the radio played in there "inbetween days"! then, yesterday, i went on a computer shop and while i was reading some pc's informations with my brother, i heard "secrets"!!! we then discovered it came from a mp3 player with lots of amplifiers, and that it had all the 17 seconds album!! then the next album was "staring at the sea", and then "japanese whispers"... suddenly an employee came to us and told us not to stop the music, because he had loaded all the albums there and wanted to hear them while working!!! :) nice job!"

  • New photo and comments from Rock 'n Folk magazine:
  • "There is a short report on The Vieilles Charrues Festival in the September issue of French Magazine Rock'n Folk that includes a nice photo of Robert. Here is what they say about The Cure set :

Here is the Cure. Robert Smith said in the afternoon that his band would not bother playing songs everybody wants to hear. Smith surprises the audience with many songs from Bloodflowers. The evening gets darker with this goth soundtrack. We have to wait until the end to hear Inbetween days or A Forest."

    (Thanks Sylvain)

  • An announcement about the three Nov. shows coming next week? Let's hope so:
  • "I asked the promotor in Germany (Karsten Jahnke) about the 3 concerts in November. He told me to mail him back around 9 September. Maybe they will know more by then!"

    (Thanks Peter)

  • Some info on part 2 of the Sonic Seducer interview with Robert:
  • "1) the top 150 most influential albums of all time (according to that mag)

    06. the cure - disintegration
    17. the cure - pornography

    (1. the sisters of mercy - first and last and always)
    (2. joy division - closer)
    (3. depeche mode - violator)

    2) the vcd that comes along with the mag not only includes 100 years live from woodstage but also a long robert interview (done in a caravan on location). more info on that hopefully soon (more than 15min long and quite a few things...).

    3) the gist of the 2nd part of the interview, which is mostly about robert's views on political stuff...

    - he always felt european rather than english only

    - he can identify with lots of places in the whole world

    - he doesn't think countries will lose their culture and identy in a united europe

    - british culture could use a bit of euro culture

    - there are other reasons why robert sings than political ones, that is why he doesn't feel the need to tell his opinion via songs, although he is for sure not satisfied with the system

    - writing songs he is moved by emotions and feelings rather than intellect...

    - if someone manages to put all the problems about injustice into a 3min song, he shouldn't be singer but rather premier minister

    - another reason why there is no political content in the lyrics, he hasn't started whne he was younger, if he'd do it now, robert would feel like preaching to the young "

    (Thanks Dennis)

  • Cure covers:
  • "On Friday a couple of the bandmembers from "Baggsmen" who have done the recent cover of 'Close to me' were on Australian Triple J radio. The announcers asked them whether they had spoken to Robert about the single and they said they had. They said initially his UK publishers told them that he usually doesn't like rap, but after listening to it, Robert liked it and told them to go with it. It seems he gave them permission to make changes to the song."

    (Thanks Zanna)

    "From Ice Magazine, September 2002:

Ivy, whose 1997 major-label debut was titled Apartment Life, moves to the Guestroom for a September 10, Minty Fresh issued covers-only album. Included are the Cure's "Let's Go to Bed," Steely Dan's "Only a Fool Would Say That," the Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and more."

"The great Pete Yorn gave a concert on Thursday, Aug. 28. Pete Yorn has always mentioned he was a great cure fan. His Opening song was Inbetween Days."

  • Curespotting:
  • "I've just found this.... anal cunt, a horrible black metal band (aren't they all), have a cure reference in one of their lyrics. http://www.metalprovider.com/analcunt/toplyrics.htm see the lyrics to "art fag". "

    (Thanks Paulo)

"I don't know if anybody has heard the song: studio hair gel by Barcelona (they're a synth-pop, neo-new wave band)..because in the song they mention Robert..here are the lyrics: "your hair looks like Robert Smith's, brings to mind the word 'obsessed'" I think the song is about some girl who doesn't care if this guy who she likes dresses in black, has a "howard jones poster on his wall", and looks like Robert.lol. It's a rather weird song, I barely heard it today. Just thought I'd share this."

    (Thanks Hypno San)

"yesterday radiostereo1 (italian radio) broadcasted a coldplay concert. They presented the new album. Then there was an exclusive interview and they said that after the success of their first album(parachutes), they had the opprtunity to spend time and money listening to many cds: The Cure, Leonard Cohen, Jonny Cash."

    (Thanks Pagilio)

"Some cure related incidents that happened over the weekend: we were on our way to a shopping trip with Xfm on the car radio. To my surprise they broadcasted a conversation between Bowie and Robert Smith. They talked about music mainly, what they sought in songs and also about the importance of public appriciation for their work. Being in the car it was all a bit hard to hear but I think that Robert said he very much craved public appriciation, as long as it wasn't from the sort of public that read the Sun or any of it's worldwide equivalents. Bowie said he could not care less whether any one appreciated his work or not. I than arrived at our shopping destination and bought the graetest hits DVD. I was pleasently surprised to see that the young boy, 10 or 11 years old maybe, in front of me in line for the till, was purchasing the same DVD! A very young new fan!"

    (Thanks Vicky)
