  • The Adelaide Advertiser interviewed Roger earlier this week and it is scheduled to run in The Guide section of The Advertiser on next Thursday. They were originally scheduled to interview Robert, but that fell through. They hope to have it rescheduled very soon.

  • The Cure's Dream Tour is covered in another tech magazine:
  • "Robert made it on the cover of the September issue of Lighting Dimensions magazine, a magazine for lighting professionals. There is a technically detailed interview with Abigail Rosen Holmes, the lighting designer for the Dream Tour, along with many color pictures of the The Cure on stage. This is the third magazine that I have found that has had a feature article on the Dream Tour lighting setup, which is testament of the quality of work which went into the Dream Tour production."

  • Curespotting:
  • "I live in melbourne , australia and turned the t.v on today at about 4:00pm and was surprised to see the cure's hard rock live show being played on channell 9( a non cable station ). what really amazed me was that this chanell never shows any sort of music program at all. although i only got to see the end of just like heaven and then fascination street i thought that this was totally amazing."

    (Thanks Brent)

"I'm a grade twelve student taking French in Vancouver, and looking through the textbook ( Entre Amis 2), I realized that there's a picture of the band in there, circa 88-89 ( the textbook is copyrighted '93) and a little article down below about " alternative" music. ust thought that that was amusing."

    (Thanks Claudia)

"I happened to be flipping through the channels tonight when I caught "The Real World" on mTV. Out of an extreme boredom I watched for a moment, and to my surprise they were playing "The Big Hand" in the background. I guess if a show's shit, they must have to make it up by playing good music."

    (Thanks BJM)

"Yesterday (28.9) i went to the expo at hannover, germany and i was very surprised when i walked around the houses and lullaby came out of an expo shop..."

    (Thanks Stefan)

"Thought I'd mention to anyone ever planning a trip to Shanghai or any other Cure fans living in Shanghai. There is a great bar called Bourbon Street on Heng Shan Lu, which on any given night will play several Cure songs, they have Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Disintigration, Wish and Wild Mood Swings in their rotation, possibly more. It's excellent to have this out here, where the Cure otherwise is quite unknown."

    (Thanks Christoffer)

    Sept. 22nd

  • An MP3 of Robert's Triple J interview is now available at the Australian Cure Petition website.
  • (Thanks Andrew)

  • We have some more info on that upcoming French tribute cd:
  • "Here you'll find more about the new french tribute album : http://mudahpeach.free.fr/ . For information, Lt.No is a french famous alternative band (ex- Les Tetines Noires) wich played 'one hundred years' (very well) in 1998 on the previous french tribute album called "Here's The Real Cure". The 5 excerpts available on the Mudah Peach page, let think that this tribute gonna be soft and intimate. You can also vote for the art cover you prefer at http://mudahpeach.free.fr/tribute_to_cure.htm

    (Thanks Dominique)

    From Side-line.com:

"New Cure tribute on its way A new cure tribute album is to be released. The album, entitled "...Imaginary songs", will hit the street in November 2000 on the french label Mudah Peach. (Thanks Bernard)

And from the French magazine Magic!:

It will feature about 12 tracks including: "A Forest" ( covered by Dionysos ) "World war" ( covered by Mickey 3D ) "Just like heaven" ( covered by Polargirl ) "Give me it" ( covered by Dominic Sonic ) "Seventeen seconds" ( covered by LTNO ) Go to http://mudahpeach.free.fr/tribute_to_cure.htm for more info. (Thanks Sylvain)

  • And here are a couple of other things mentioned in Magic! magazine:
  • "The Cure and Robert are mentionned several times in the September issue of French "Modern pop" magazine Magic!. Here is what they say:

    - After the dreamtour, the cure may tour again one last time "to say Goodbye" to their fans. No more details at the moment.

    - Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, who is a Cure fan, said he would like to take part in Robert's hypothetical solo album.

    - Migala and Sr. Chinarro, who are two Spanish bands, have released a 2-Track CD called "Plainsong / The Figurehead", on which Migala covers Plainsong and Sr. Chinarro covers The Figurehead. According to Magic!, both versions are very good."

    (Thanks Sylvain)

  • Curespotting:
  • "In the most recent issue of Rolling Stone (w/ Madoona on the cover), in the "on the road" section Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 says that despite the band's plentiful original material they will continue to play covers such as "Fascination Street" live (Can't imagine these hacks doing the song justice)."

    (Thanks Ali)

"There is a new first novel by Fran Gordon entitled Paisley Girl. It is a great read, and I think she must be a cure fan. Witness the following quote:

"... Willa was already gone, listening to the Cure on her walkman.

Crash heard their buzz. 'Puh-lease,' he said.

The Cure were my favorite. Their riffs sounded like an amplification of Urdu. 'Paki noise,' he called it. The Cure, too, ailed Crash -- he said it had to do with their hair and makeup, their habit of cutting albums in France. I couldn't help but think that there should have been something more to his aversion, something bigger than geography and eyeliner.

It was dark now, quiet out. London closed early. Too still for a Saturday night. Date night. I sang the discordant song that the Persian League of Anti-Defamation was up in arms over. But they just didn't get it. It was my favorite, the one about L'Etranger."

    (Thanks phlox)

"Just a little cure spotting from Austria that seems to be (unwantedly, i suppose) taking part in forming a little series.... This evening they showed a report on ORF, the Austrian state television, about the Austrian government planning to introduce general study fees for all students and about the fact that the students are quite upset. The background music to this report was the intro of Want.

I remember that a year ago they also showed a report about some financial issues on ORF, which was backed by the intro of The Holy Hour.

And, even back in 1992, i can remember that End was played, also to a report about some fiscal issues. (A few days after this they played Cut to a report about Schizophrenia, i think it was round christmas '92....)"

    (Thanks Michael)

"I just love when i am reading an article and SUDDENLY someone mentions THE CURE!! Anyway, I was reading this somewhat new magazine called, Revolver and in the cover story Fred Durst of the band Limp Bisket said that he listens to a lot of The Cure's music. at least he has good taste in musical influences. "

    (Thanks Veronica)

"this is a Curespotting from Italy: About three days ago I was in Milan and I was wandering in the Ricordi MediaStore, something like a Virgin MegaStore, and there was a promotional advertising poster for NICE PRICE CDs showing three little pictures as examples for singers: BRITNEY SPEARS, MARIAH CARREY and ROBERT SMITH !!!!! FUNNY !!!!!!! but the funniest thing is The Cure don't have nice price CDs !"

    (Thanks Sebiano)

"A very unlikely Cure spotting this one. While on Holiday in Ibiza last Thursday (14th), at the Cream night at the famous Amnesia night club, one of the dance tunes they played had the lyrics to Lovesong sung over it with a female voice. The tune bore no similarities to the original, and I thought I was hearing things for a while! Apart from the words it was just your bog standard thumping dance track."

    (Thanks Jas)

"While looking through october's issue of TIME Digital magazine (that comes about every 3 months with TIME magazine), There is an article titled "Type Dreams" that explains how to make your own fonts on a computer. One of the three examples shown is the lovely Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me font. "

    (Thanks Mandy)

"I was channel surfing and on USA the movie "Parenthood" with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis was on, a very funny movie by the way. And there is a scene with Keanu Reeves with his girlfriend in the movie (forgot her name, grrr) and on the wall... the black and white Boy's don't cry poster! Pretty cool."

    (Thanks Emilie)

"Today (15/9) we had a curespotting: we were watching a programme about the history of the Olympic Games on the italian TV and they played in the background "Lovesong" and "Fascination Street", both from "Mixed up"."

    (Thanks Pietro, Andrea and Chiara)

"On my way back from a Rave Friday night in Atlanta I was surfing through the channels on the radio. I stopped on this consumer reports talk show, www.clarkhoward.com, and he was playing Just Like Heaven for the start of his show. This is a local talk show host in Atlanta whom I have always liked, but now I like him even more. Great song Clark!"

    (Thanks Jacob)

" last week i was celebrating my 21st bday at one of the chicagos clubs "drink" ...i was having a pretty awful day.... but when they played one of my favourite cure songs....LOVE SONG!!...i was dancing and singing like crazy....it made my day.....and all because of that one song.... "

    (Thanks Mariusz)

"On the radio station dc101 in Washington, DC I heard a commercial for the club Polyesta's for deca-dance night (70s and 80s music) and they played "Why Can't I be You?" in the background."

    (Thanks Katie)

"had a couple cure spottings last week. first i was at a wedding in the middle of nowhere in new hampshire staying at an old country inn with no entertainment except a very old radio, when i turned it on why can't i be you came on a local station. i was very happy to hear this as it made my stay much more bearable. then when i returned to work i was looking through an office supply catalog and robert smith was the name on a picture of an envelope and while driving home i saw a car in front of me with the license plate "luv cats". "

    (Thanks violet6301)

    Sept. 21st

  • And here we go, the complete transcript of the Triple J interview:
  • we have already heard right after the 6am news....

"Hello this is Robert from the Cure and your listening to jjj breakfast and like me u should be up and about"

"Its 6:26 on jjj and after 6:30 we will be playing our chat that we had with Robert Smith the other day"

    so its obviously pre-recorded.

This should be read in an upbeat laughing kind of mood.

JJJ : How are you Robert?

    RS: Very well thank you

JJJ: Are you looking forward to coming down to Brisbane and rocking out

RS: Yeah, Yeah, Its been quite a while since we were last in Australia. Last time was 92 so its too long really

JJJ: Do you realise the sort of excitement , domino effect you have when you announce you are comin'

RS: Well we did a world tour in 96 and we missed out on the Southern Hemisphere for a lot of different reasons , none of them particularly good and we got a lot of kind of disappointment heading our way. So this time round when we knew we were gonna go out again we thought we would definitely come on down to Australia. THERE WAS A PETITION STARTED UP A COUPLE OF MONTHS BACK WHICH KIND OF REALLY NUDGED US INTO MAKING A FINAL DECISION (I knew the hours would pay off, Fuji and Andy's finest moment) And certainly the last big world tour we kind of go to the same places which is kind of stupid really. I mean Japan we haven't been there for like 13 years I don't know why we had a really good time while we were there and the concerts were great but we never went back. I don't really know why we missed out on Australia last time looking back the reasons at the time seem good but with hindsight they were pretty weak. This time round we have been very kind of conservative and we've picked our dates and we are still dead keen to play and everybody is really looking forward to coming down to Australia.

JJJ: What's the main difference between say playing The Cure solo shows and playing a big festival like Livid

RS: The main difference for us is that we are playing for 3 hours when we do our own shows. I think with the festivals we are kind of constrained by 90 minutes. We are faced, in our own minds, potentially that a good percentage of the audience don't really want to see us, So we have to win them over. Whether that's true or not I think its a good thing to have going on stage at a festival. If u go on thinking that everyone loves you you are going to be in for a shock. Certainly at some of the festivals we have done in the past.

JJJ: Do u ever just think , OK we have done some remixes, we do some pretty long songs, they don't know us, bugger it lets just do 1 hour, 1 song.

RS: At festivals? well in the old days we used to do that . We thought oh well bugger it nobody knows who we are. But it would be pretty tragic for the Livid festival. For like people turning up and don't know who the cure are. Having said that the last three festivals we've done we have been a lot less festival conscious. We've tended to bring out the hits and try and win them over but we have been a little bit more kind of pig headed this year cause we have actually tended to play, I mean the whole year we have been concentrating more on the darker side of what we do so that's why the shows are 3 hours long and its only 7 songs. But with festivals they are a few kind of interspersed with more well known songs but we are actually playing some more heavy stuff. Its not the pop side of The Cure really. Its also dependent what the bill I think that's probably the key to it. And its a pretty good bill at Livid. There's enough interesting bands on to make the whole event have a certain atmosphere.

JJJ: Ok there's some great bands kicking around. I wanna know Robert what are u like as a festival goer. You guys are gonna be on say 9 - 9:30 at night. Do u get there early, put on the shorts and the T-shirt, throw the zinc on go around have a few hot dogs get pretty pissed you know, fall over later stumbling drunk on stage having seen all the other bands.

RS: Im a consummate professional how could I possibly do that

JJJ: What I like about the festival circuit though and the thing that The Cure has that some other acts don't have at the festival u can still kind of identify a cure fan.

RS: yeah there is a very highly visible hard-core to our audience and they are probably the ones who least like us doing festivals as well. Its not really the best setting for that look. I think its sweet , u know its like I spose generally we are coming on later in the day, after the suns gone down, does the sun ever set in Australia. BOYS DON'T CRY PLAYED

JJJ: One of the things that die hard cure fans are asking us that don't live in Queensland or Brisbane I s, are u just playing livid or are doing a series of spin off gigs around Australia. Sort of a more full Cure experience.

RS: Yeah I think a couple of days ago we decided, we are doing a couple of shows now in Sydney. We are starting off in Perth and we are doing Adelaide and Melbourne, Canberra so we are pretty much doing almost everywhere. We are missing, I know we are missing some places. We will probably end up doing 7 or 8 shows in the time that we are down there.

JJJ: Can I ask you on a completely different note, there's a little thing called the Olympics going on. In Australia at the moment and we are seeing the worlds very best, If u weren't in The Cure if u weren't a muso, and u could be one of the worlds very best at something else. What would it be. a dentist tennis player

RS: ummm I really like the Triathlon actually I think its fantastic event

JJJ: I didn't pick that I must admit. What would be your strongest leg the swim the run or the bike

RS: The bike I think , I like the swimming that's going on I think its really its weird, I think because of the setting, im really into it, I like the Thorpedo. I think its pretty funny.

JJJ: Well im sure he's a bit of a cure fan too. We see him with the all black sometimes with the body suit

RS: Maybe that's what it is

JJJ: That's what the body suit is, It isn't about speed, its just about being black

    RS: Its a Goth statement

JJJ:We cant wait for u too come out , its going to be fantastic. Best of luck at livid and on the entire festival. Now rumours that this could have a kind of farewell , thanks for ur love kind of feel to it, any comment

RS: Rumours have been going round and there's a feeling within the band, there's kind of like an unstated belief that this will be the last time that we do it, Id say each time we do it, at some point it is going to be the last time. I cant imagine us coming back to Australia in another 8 years, but who knows. Ive tried to encourage everyone around the band to believe that this will be the last time we do it. Its made the performances just so much better. Everybody's really keen to kind of go out on a high.

JJJ: Of course we can see u again in 4 years competing in Athens at the Triathlon

RS: Its a bit late for that

JJJ: Thank you very much for your time, Robert Smith from the Cure.

RS: See you when we get down there.

(A million thanks to Fuji for typing all of this up and getting it to us so fast)

  • Robert will be interviewed on Australian radio station Triple J tomorrow/today. It will air sometime between 6 - 9am tomorrow morning Australian time. • Curespotting:
  • "there's a few paragraphs about pink pig (including a picture of the packaging, and a small photo of robert) in the sept. 2000 issue of the u.k. Mojo magazine (issue #272)... the writer sounded pretty impressed with the project..."

    (Thanks jewel)

"Just got my new columbia house catalog and BLOODFLOWERS is now available through them.

there is also a picture of the Cure and a little article that reads: Returning to the serenely dark presence of prior classics "Pornography" and "Disintegration," Robert Smith and co. have put together the pieces of another beautifully tragic set. Sewn with echoing reverb guitar clashes, lushly infectious synth drives and sensual percussions, cuts like the top 10 Maybe Someday, Out Of This World and the title track weave in hypnotic swirls beneath Smith's unmistakable, intoxicating vocal charms. "

    (Thanks Nicole)

"I can't help but send this in. I'm a first year medical student with an Anatomy exam approaching. In preparation, I have spent many an hour in our school's cadaver lab. How great was my joy, as well as my appreciation of the irony, when the the local radio station began playing "Why Can't I Be You." Couldn't have been aired at a more appropriate time in my book."

    (Thanks Mautz)

"This past Saturday I was with my husband and daughter at a restaurant called "Crabby Bob's", a seafood restaurant chain. We decided to eat in the lounge as there was no wait there. There was this man playing his guitar in there, all classic rock. Much to my surprise, he then played "lovesong" and sang it too! He seemed around 50...he did a good job too."

    (Thanks duckie)

"I was just flicking through channels and on NBC this show called Home Page used a clip from the song Friday I'm In love to bring the show back from commercial."

    (Thanks IIriotpoofII)

"Today on the Latin MTV, the 'Friday I`m In Love' video was #9 in the Top 10 of the Rock ´90´s chart."

    (Thanks Gabriel)

"I went to a party in Mexicali BC. Mexico, an the group that was playing did a cover of "the walk" and "boys dont cry" In the walk they had problems with the guitar but "BDC" was very good."

  • Curespotting:
  • "I'm just back from my Spain holidays. One day we were sitting in a small cafe in an even smaller street in Granada. We were sitting outside, where no music from inside of the cafe could be heard as suddenly the volume was turned up and I had the pleasure to listen to a live version of A Forest. By the way, the cafe was called 'Las cuevas'. "

    (Thanks Lars)

"In the new Rolling Stone (with Madonna on the cover), David Draiman of Disturbed sites Disintegration as his 3rd favorite album of all time saying, "[it is] so deliciously dark and gloomy, so well crafted."

"I got back from trip to Europe and the Israel. Numerous Cure sightings through Europe (DUH?!). Sitting outside a little bagel shop in the Jewish quarter of the old city in Jerusalem and Inbetween days came on the radio. I can't tell you how good it felt, I was tired and had been staying in the heart of the Arab quarter where you will never hear the Cure. To hear this song told me I was almost home even if I was 5000 miles away."

    (Thanks James)

"This morning, I was up at 6:30, and I decided to turn on the television and watch music videos. I was watching MTV , and I guess they were just showing previews from the early 80's and 90's video music awards. All of the clips that they showed were about 5 seconds long, and right before I was about to change it, I heard JUST LIKE HEAVEN play. I was SOO excited, it made my morning. "

    (Thanks CURElvr13)

"While reading Sarah Vowell's book Take the Cannoli, I came across this on the last page in the last essay in the book "American Goth"....

Like a scene straight out of the Munsters, all goth contempt is beamed onto the dance floor, where a happy blond Fawn Hall lookalike in acid-washed jeans is smiling the night away, oblivious. Compared to her, at least outwardly, I am as goth as a Cure album dipped in blood."

    (Thanks Carol)

"Today while I was shopping at the local mall, I was surprised to see saleswoman at the lancome make-up counter who had a boom-box at her counter and was playing "Maybe Someday" I asked her if it was the radio playing and she answered NO, "it's the bloodflowers CD by the cure."

    (Thanks CuRIOsaOnE)

"Hello, recently read an article in SPIN magazine, involving the CURE and PINK PIG- the 14- cd CURE project. Excellent article w/ picture, of Perry and Robert!! It is located, in the REVIEWS section -- p. 181 October 2000."

"I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, but in Jesse's room on "Saved By The Bell" there's a cure poster on the wall. I would guess it's from 1985 or 1986. I've seen it on 2 or 3 different episodes. I also went to Knott's Berry Farm recently and saw a lady with a black shirt that had "The Cure" printed all over it in different colours with crazy "Kiss Me" writing. I don't mean to judge, but I would guess she didn't even know who The Cure is. I was tempted to offer her money for the shirt."

"I walked into a store called Liquid, which sells various items including clothing, skateboarding equipment, etc., and they were playing "The Empty World" from The Top album. Needless to say, I nearly wet my pants! After that was over they played the first few bars of "Maybe Someday," cut it off in the middle, and played some weird remix of "Watching Me Fall" that I had never heard before."

    (Thanks Casey)

"I was sitting at the dining area of the Maxim hotel in Las Vegas when "Friday I'm in Love" came over the speakers. Even though it was only Thursday, it really made my day!"

  • Curespotting:
  • "I was last saturday at a forest party. The party was held in the woods in the middle of nowhere near Helsinki, Finland. At this party there was a band called Viola playing. They play this wonderful cure influenced music (all of you out there would really appreciate their music, I know). they played a fantastic version of a forest. It was pretty slow and it was a mixture of a forest and Twin Peaks-theme. I wish they'd record it so you could hear it. It's the best cover version of a forest I've ever heard. And hearing it in a forest was nice too. After the gig there was a disco that lasted until the sunrise. And I can say that it's a lot of fun to party to Plainsong at 6 o'clock in the morning under the stars."

    (Thanks Antti)

"I was watching "undressed" on mtv last night and during the story line about the skid and Ted character performing a gay play at their high school. well in the back ground of the pool table in the attic was a bloodflower promo poster of the CURE. it was the giant pic of the the red rose with the square pic of roberts face."

    (Thanks Sana)

"I have had ALOT of cure spottings this week.

    OK here we go..

1.)On Monday night on Rock & Roll Jeopardy they had a question that went something like "a movie about a rock star and his bird, the soudtrack featured songs by Helmet and The Cure", the answer was The Crow.

2.) I was reading a biography on this new-ish band called Vast. The lead singer, Jon Crosby, said he was influenced by The Cure (and also U2 and the Depeche Mode)

3.) This morning on "Homepage"(a show after the Today show) they played the beginning of "Inbetween Days" again while going into a commercial! Is it their theme song or something?

4.) And just a few minutes ago while listening to Y100, (a local radio station in the Philadelphia area) they had a commercial for a club called "Polyesters"(sp?) Anyways they played "Hot Hot Hot" in the background. They were advertizing a Thursday Night Classic CLub thing, were all night they play nothing but 80's music."

    (Thanks KellyO.)

"Just had a curespotting here at my local K-Mart in Kansas City, MO. I was walking around the store when all of a sudden, "Friday I'm In Love" came over the speaker system. I must say it made my experience in K-Mart much better. "

    (Thanks Darren)

"Yesterday I was entering the metro in Lisbon when I saw this woman with a cool Lullaby T-shirt. I was so astonished to see it that I asked her where she got it. She answered me that a friend sold it to her, but she bought it because she liked the crazy hair of the guy at the T-shirt, but she didn´t know who he was!"

    (Thanks Claudio)

"UGH! I don't even know if I should be reporting this sighting, as it might generate a mass vomiting frenzy amongst Cure fans, the world over. Anyway, while I surfing around aimlessly I came upon a profile of Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys... "Favorite Song | I Will Always Love You by The Cure".... Hope that didn't spoil your meal or your day or both...

    (Thanks SwalowSlay)

"In the October issue of A.P. there's a little blurb in the Wiretapping section about a cover of "Love Song" on the latest Jack Off Jill album that was released in July. The album was released on Risk/404 records, and produced by former NIN drummer Chriss Vrenna. Amazon.com's website listed the cover as track 66, so i'm assuming it's an unlisted/"hidden" track. "

    (Thanks Robi)

"well not much just that a few weeks ago on a german channel they played a erotic movie in which " jumping someone elses train " was the main song,

and i was getting into a internet cafe and as i was about to pay for an hour or so, " friday im in love " began on the radio and made my day. i think it was energy a cool radio in vienna."

    (Thanks k847zaaa)

"While i was watching the formula 1 on TV in Australia, the music they used going into an ad break was The Cures Wrong Number, i thought it was pretty cool."
