Oct. 29th

  • Happy Birthday & Best Wishes to Roger O' Donnell. Cheers!

  • To clear up the Brussels ticket situation (again!), the show is NOT sold out and tickets ARE still available. Trying to figure out where to get them is the big mystery. Go For Music is playing some sort of game with their ticket availability, having them for sale one day, sold out the next, then available again the following day. FNAC had a limited number available, but they might be gone by now. If all else fails, the band suggest calling Herman Schuerman at Clearchannel to ask for the best place to get the remaining tickets.

  • I just put up the 'Six Different Ways' clip from Rules of Attraction on the Audio/Video page. Hope you had the chance to see it while it was in theatres.

  • Here's the ad for the Hamburg show:
  • (Thanks Sascha)

  • Ticket update:
  • "the www.goformusic.be site has been updated. it now says that there are no more tickets for the cure concert left BUT that people that haven't got a ticket can inscribe on a waiting list. why? some people that orded tickets may never pay them so some may become available (they also say that in the event of a second concert date being anounced then those people that inscribe would be first on the list, but we now that the cure will not be playing a second gig!)

of course tickets may still be available via the fnac music shops or caroline or other small shops in belgium, i haven"t cheched them out! i will if i can!"

    (Thanks David)

hi there , just wanted to let you know that i found this on the net, as i know the dj (he likes cure, foolsdance, the glove..) i think this party will be quite good! although the duncker is a little bit small - i think it would be lovely to see it crowded with cure-fans from all over the world ;0)

I attached a map how to get to the club:

    (Thanks Julia)

"it looks like we have a November 11th post-concert Cure gathering from Berlin's club Duncker. I'm told their capacity is a relatively modest 250 so Curefans take note. It also appears Duncker is open on November 10th 10pm+ - a more generic listing but a logical assembly point for those Cure fans who arrive a day or so ahead of time, no? :-) Here's the link for Berlin goth club dates in November: Of particular interest 10.11, 11.11, and 12.11.

Have a safe and "cure"-full Halloween! (that was bad!):P "

(Thanks Lindsey Grodoski and Kamar Khan)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I was listening to the "American Top 20" countdown yesterday with Casey Kasem on a local station in Connecticut. As an "AT Extra" he played "Lovesong" by The Cure to commemmorate how it was a big hit here 15 years ago. He also related the story of how the band came to America on the QE2 on that tour since Robert Smith does not like to fly."

    (Thanks Wendy)

"I noticed a comment that someone heard a Cure song at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. Well...since I work there, since they opened, I can now report that the following Cure songs can now be heard ever so often there....Just Like Heaven, Lovesong, Why Can't I Be You, Friday I'm In Love...and Cut Here!!!"

  • Rolling Stone reports a Jan. start date for the new album:
  • "In the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine, there's a section under "in the studio" that says:

"The Cure start work on a new album with famed metal producer Ross Robinson (Limp Bizkit, Slipknot) in January"

Note: Some of you seem surprised about Ross producing the album, but I reported that 2 months ago on August 23rd, and even have an entire page of fan reaction to the announcement. So if you missed it back then, check it out now. : )

    (Thanks Strangesttwist)

  • Cure video featured on new Toyota promo cd:
  • "An enhanced CD for the new Toyota Camry featuring five music tracks and an interactive documentary on the new automobile is being distributed in Australia in BRW (Business Review Weekly). The free disc is included in each copy of BRW this week and features The Cure's "Lovecats" video. It seems as if the new Toyota Camry is being targeted towards early Cure fans."

    (Thanks Levon)

  • Travel tips for fans in Denmark going to shows in Germany:
  • "For Cure fans in Denmark going to Berlin:

DSB Denmark http://www.dsb.dk/udland/tog/ has a special offer with cheap trains from Denmark to Berlin. The tickets are half price. I orded my returnticket yesterday, and I only had to pay about 107 EURO (800,00 Dkr). This is VERY cheap ! I do not know how many tickets they have, but are you from Denmark and going by train, then contact DSB, tlf. 70 13 14 16. You have to order the ticket at least 7 days before you are leaving.

DSB also has a special offer on trains to Hamburg."

(Thanks to Tina from One Hundread Years)

  • Can any fans in Berlin help Brandon?
  • "I'll be attending the 11/11 Berlin show. Is there somewhere I can find plans for a Curedrink or any organized events in Berlin before/after the concert?

Also, I'm trying to find out from locals in Berlin what are the 'good' CD stores. i.e. looking for singles and bootleg CDs for bands like the Cure, New Order, Electronic, DM, Bjork, etc.

Any answers you can provide is extremely appreciated. damoose@spy.net"

  • Curespotting:

    (Thanks Blues973)

"I visited a TOCOTRONIC (a german cult band) Concert in Cologne on October 21. In the break before the shows beginning some joy division song was played and right after it "10.15 saturday night". That really didn't surpise me because I always thought of Tocotronic knowing the Cure, but for me it was an emotional intro right before the real one."

    (Thanks Monika)

  • Good news for everyone without a dvd player - The Trilogy Concert will be released on vhs too.

  • Ticket update for Brussels:

    (Thanks Christopher)

  • Curespotting:
  • "XM Channel 44 (Fred) kicked off its new series of rebroadcasted live performaces, Front Row Fred, tonight (Wednesday) with an entire hour of live Cure. I don't think it was one concert, though, since they edited out whenever Robert was about to speak. I forgot to write it down as it happened, but from what I remember, they played (not in this order) : Fascination Street, A Night Like This, Just Like Heaven, Shiver and Shake, Friday I'm in Love, High, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Disintegration, Jupiter Crash, and others I just can't remember."

    (Thanks Jeremy)

"Today, 24.10.02, there was an interview on the Slovak TV JOJ with a rather strange band call Shellwoy.. as the singer was wearing makeup, he was asked if he listened to The Cure, to which he, rather reluctantly, said yeah, he listened to The Cure at one point of time....\"but then, EVERYBODY listened to The Cure at one point of time,\" said the host, \"except maybe Metalheads and Depeche Mode fans...\"

Thought it was fun, but the band eventually proved really boring."

    (Thanks Michal)

"In the italian book "L'america delle kessler" written by Stefano Sardo every chapter has a relevant song. One of this chapter has "Close to me". There is other one with Dear Prudence of Siouxie and the Banshees from Nocturne, the live album with Robert at the guitar."

    (Thanks Michele)

"Today, i was watching german mtv. There was a program called "20 years - best of mtv", today they had best videos of 1992. The showed Friday I'm in love...but to my surprise it wasn't the well-known video clip we all from galore video or greatest hits dvd. It was a sort of live performence but with the orginal studio recording over it. Crazy. "

    (Thanks Stefan)

"i was at the no doubt/garbage concert last night (october 21) at the nassau collesium. after garbage's set list, lovecats came on over the speakers! that made the night even better."

    (Thanks Fayden)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I just received the November 'Q' magazine (the british music mag) and in the 'Ask Q' section there is the following bit:

? from reader: "I once heard something about The Cure's Killing an Arab being taken rather literally and becoming something of a racist anthem in the US. Is this true and, if so, what happened? -Antony Salatova, Braintree"

answer: "It's true. The song's title, actually inspired by Albert Camus's existential novel The Outsider, was always problematic. In 1979, mistaking the band for fellow - if peculiarly dressed - racists, National Front supporters kicked off at a gig at London's Nashville Rooms. Then, in 1986, when their Standing on a Beach compilation was released, the song was taken up by American right-wing shock-jocks working at several college radio stations including Ivy League Institution Princeton and the University of Michigan. Following complaints from the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the band requested radio stations stop playing the song and further copies of the album were issued with stickers declaring: "The song Killing an Arab has absolutely no racist overtones whatsoever. It is a song that decries the existense of all prejudice and consequent violence."

(nothing new, just reporting the mention)

Also, The November issue included a booklet entitled 'The 50 most powerful people in music 2002' and coming in at #42 is Ross Robinson. After a brief sort of bio, it lists 'what's next?' which reads: "Producing Seattle quintet The Blood Brothers and possibly, The Cure."

    (Thanks Emilie)

I was watching Providence sometime last week, and the main character's sister works as a radio dj. She's just turned her mic on and starts talking to her listeners..."that was The Cure's Just Like Heaven. The greatest love song...in the world!" and then she precedes to ask her listeners to call in for input. I've never watched the show, except for that one night last week, but the Cure reference made it memorable.

    (Thanks L. Feraro)

"I just thought I'd send you this Cure reference from popular webcomic "8-Bit theater".

    (Thanks ManInsideMyMouth)

"Last night on BBC-world an Iraqi prisoner, who was just liberated had a black T-shirt of the album 'Concert', he was dancing and jumping around."

    (Thanks Laurent)

"Saturday night on the MTV Italy, the Cure video "Boys don't cry"special guest in the Night with Cranberries."

    (Thanks Max)

"In Las Vegas this afternoon at the Venetian (a very *upscale* resort), I heard "Why Can't I Be You" while I was in the casino."

    (Thanks Heron)

  • Berlin is now officially sold out!

  • I'm breaking my own rule here, but since Berlin is now sold out, I'll list tickets for sale again, but only for Berlin:
  • "hi everyone! i have three tickets for the berlin shows that i can sell! one standing for the 11th and two standing for the 12th of november..i don't want to make any profit-i'll sell them as much as i bought them-if someone is interested..send me an e-mail! my address..katerinatrouble@hotmail.com"

    (Thanks Katerina)

  • Brussels update:
  • "the goformusic.be site has been updated again and it says there are no more tickets available. so it would seem that brussels is a little like NYC, Chicago or L.A. afterall (although i must confess the concert's should have been sold out in a matter of hours) !!!!"

Update: "it would seem that the www.goformusic.be site are now selling the full price tickets (40 euros) again... i checked in on the site on saterday 13h30 european time."

    (Thanks David)

"I've called the ticketservice today for the Cure concert in Brussel and they told me that the concert is almost sold out. So there aren't plenty of tickets left."

    (Thanks Mark)

"Here is a great site you can mention to find and book a hotel in brussels... Bookings BE "

    (Thanks Bill)

  • Any one organizing a Curedrink or anything for the Trilogy shows?
  • "We're leaving Chicago on Oct. 31 for our Nov. 4 wedding in Scotland, then directly on to the shows in Hamburg and Berlin - perfect timing!! As we may not have access to a computer or this site once we leave, would anyone like to throw out a few suggestions now re: a place and time for interested Cure fans to meet for a few drinks before the shows? Hope to finally meet some of you there!"

    (Thanks MorrisLaLa)

  • Cure night in Germany:

Place: ZOOM - Chemnitz, Zwickauer Str.152

    See you soon."

  • Curespotting:
  • "Last night on Radio One I heard The Walk being played on the Pete Tong show. Pete Tong is a very dance orientated DJ so it was odd to hear The Cure. The mix he played did seem a little bit different to any of the official versions available. On checking his website it has it listed as The Cure - The Walk (Re-Edit) (Fiction). Don't know who did this redit though. The whole set can and playlist can be viewed at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/dance/petetong/tracklistingsarchive.shtml if anyone wants to listen to it and make their own minds up. I have emailed the show to see if they can provide any more info on the mix."

    (Thanks Ian)

"few weeks ago i watched this a couple of years old american tv-series "opposite sex", & some parts of "boys don't cry" were played in it twice while a character was rehearsing some kind of wrestling..."

    (Thanks Sandra)

"I went to the movies on Sunday to see a new Australian film "Garage Days". It is about a young band trying to get a start in the music industry. The soundtrack is excellent, but made even better with the inclusion of Boys Don't Cry and 10:15 Saturday Night. As you mentioned in Rules of Attraction, the songs are not lost in a party scene, but play as the soundtrack to poignant moments. It is a fantastic movie."

    (Thanks Jo)

"During 'Home Front in the Garden' on BBC 2 (tonight) they used the remix of 'Close To Me'"

    (Thanks Benjy)

"Maybe I've just been really lucky, but I've seen a lot of the Cure on tv lately. Yesterday (Tues) they played the upbeat intro of Fascination Street during the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards when they were introducing Dolce and Gabbana as one of the nominees for designer of the year. Its funny how I never would have "pictured" the song in this context, but it worked quite well. Later on that night (early Wed. morning actually), I was watching Senor Moby's House of Music on MTV, a show where he personally picks the songs, and I was amazed when he played Just Like Heaven! He also choose Jurassic 5, Pulp, The Flaming Lips, ummm.... Then today (Wed night) the cure was on SNL on Comedy Central playing In Between Days! Strange...."

    (Thanks Jason)

"I'm reading a book called "Goth Chic - A Connoisseur's Guide to Dark Culture" by Gavin Baddeley. On page 205 there is a picture of Robert, and the caption calls him the "living image of clinical depression" - I laughed out loud when I read that! The text is mostly about how Robert used to frequent the Batcave because he liked the people, but he didn't like the music, which romanticized death. It also discusses how the Cure's music is more pop than goth, but how much influence Robert's look and music have had on goth culture. I recommend this book, even though there is only a few paragraphs about Robert (not even about the Cure as a whole), because it covers a wide range of dark subjects, including movies, music, clothing, and more. It's a fun read."

    (Thanks Shari)

  • Just to make this very clear, the Brussels show is NOT sold out. There may be glitches in the ticket systems or something, but there are plenty of tickets left.
  • Also, none of the German shows have sold out either. Kartenhaus still has tickets for all 3 german shows. I still can't believe that the trilogy shows haven't sold out. That would not have happened in NYC, Chicago or L.A.

  • FNAC to sell tickets for Brussels:
  • "In last weeks newspaper, they said that FNAC would sell tickets for The Cure's Brussels concert on 19 oct. I've been told that there would only be a few tickets to sell.

Inundated with fan requests to add another show to the already announced Berlin (2 shows) and Hamburg 4 hours gigs, The Cure have accepted to add an extra fourth (opening)show in Brussels as well on November 7th. For those hoping to see some more shows added, bad luck, The Cure assured that the three announced shows will remain the only ones as they plan to return to studio to continue work on the follow-up to "Bloodflowers". During the gigs, the band will play the (almost) entire tracklist of "Pornography", "Disintegration" and "Bloodflowers" aka the "dark"-trilogy. Side-Line has 4 FREE tickets for this show. • Curespotting:
  • "I attended a Ryan Adams concert tonight at the Vic theater in Chicago and he made a Cure referance before one of his songs. He sat down at the piano and asked for "disintigration lighting" for this next song. He then made a slight crack about Robert and how he must put on his make up while riding the bus. Thought it was kinda funny."

    (Thanks MEGOHulk)

"Sharpeworld.com has an mp3 of the week and this week's is of a Christian talk show host lecturing a 13 year old girl about the evils of the Cure. It starts off being rather amusing but by the end, as a Cure fan, I was just disturbed by how calmly this guy slanders everything I hold dear.

"I was just watching the Late Show with Crag Kilborn, and Patrick Swazye was on to promote his new movie. (he looked as if he had had a facelift or two, and added to that.... his earlobes have grown! i swear they have! lol) And then came the 5 questions segment, and the 5th question was for Mr. long earlobes to name 5 bands from the 80's....... I cringed when he said it, The Cure. It really gets me when people say they are an 80's band. I say: 'Off with their heads!!' hehee "

    (Thanks Emilie)

"From the November 2002 issue of Blender:

Siouxsie and the Banshees: The Very Best of, Three Stars, Geffen.

Frosty post-punk that led an era of art-schoolers to wear black mascara. Siouxsie and the Banshees sprang from the British punk scene that spawned the Sex Pistols, but they didn't play punk rock. Like the Cure's Robert Smith (himself a former Banshee), singer Siouxsie Sioux specialized in frosty, atmospheric pieces shaped by shimmering guitars and ominous lyrics. This perfect-for-late-night collection showcases songs that made them a fixture on the British charts from the late '70's through the '80's, plus their biggest U.S. hit, 1991's Middle Eastern-flavored "Kiss Them For Me." While Siouxsie's absurdly solemn vocals flirt with self-parody, there's spooky power in the brittle rocker "Spellbound," the melancholy "Christine" and a swirling cover of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence." A pointless bonus disc of remixes stretches songs as long as nine minutes, breaking the spell. Written by Jon Young."

  • Brussels ticket/travel update:
  • "Just to let you know that the www.goformusic.be site to buy the Cure tickets for the Brussels show says that there are no tickets left. hope everybody has got one!"

Update - "latest news from go for music: only tickets at the doors (7/11) for 40 Euros! Phone of forst national +32 70/ 344 111(maybe tickets left?)."

Update 2 - "on the www.goformusic.be site there are now more tickets on sale for Brussels but they are at the full price (40 euros). "

    (Thanks David and Alberic)

"There is no cure concert available on ticketclub.de by now 13 oct 2002 Wonder if there were some and then disappeared!"

Update - "ticketclub.be had cure tickets today (15 oct.), I bought mine this morning and had it to be sent over to France for a total amount of 47.5 euros..."

    (Thanks Bill)

"I got a reply from the Pay and Go Music. They will accept international Visa and Mastercard ticket purchases if you fax them your credit card info. Tickets will be held at the box office. The entire show is general admission, although standing room is limited. Thus there is little need to rush to get tickets. Just be at the show early to guarantee your place close to the stage."

    (Thanks Joe)

"Two tips that might help for the Brussels show:

Calling Goformusic from abroad: 0900 260 60 being a Pay-Per-Call number (like a 900 number in the US) I don't believe that you can dial +32 900 260 60 if you're not in Belgium. In any case, the "official" international number given by the HelpDesk is +32 70 345 678.

Flying with Ryanair: from Charleroi-Brussels-South airport, it is indeed much easier to reach Brussels by bus than by train. "Elan" coaches leave the airport 30 minutes after each arrival and go directly to Brussels South Station (Bruxelles Midi) for 10.00 euros. You buy your ticket in the bus. Otherwise you have to take a local bus to Charleroi South Station and then the train to Brussels South Station and connections are not that good."

    (Thanks Olivier)

  • Ad for the German shows in WOM magazine:
  • "Just grabbed the recent issue of wom journal here in germany (wom is a cd-store chain...) - and karsten jahnke has a big advert in it, listing all the tourdates of the jahnke-roster - the cure ist listed:

    (GREATEST HITS)

  • Ok, this is my last listing of tickets for sale (no more will be accepted after this):
  • "I'd like to sell two more Hamburg tickets as well (standing area). The price will be about 45€ for both tickets. We will visit the Brüssel-show as well. (in order to have no problems with shipping I'd prefer german-fans for trading) e-mail: easycure@web.de"

    (Thanks Martin)

"I have a couple of berlin tickets left. I made a mistake when I ordered them so now I have the double amount of standing tickets. I will sell them for the 36 euros, that they cost and postage. Anyone could simply contact me via e-mail (Avita@gmx.de). I think it is better than to sell them on ebay one day. I don´t want to make profit."

    (Thanks Jorg)

  • Can anyone help Cielo out?
  • "Hello everyone!!! I'm a curefan and I have a problem.I'm about to travel around Europe next week, but I don't have credit card to buy my tickets for the berlin shows,I have already bought my flyticket to fly from berlin to london on nov. 13,but I'm not going to get to germany until nov. 11,it's the last country that I'm going to visit,I would like to go to both concerts,nov.11 and 12,if you know someone who can sell me tickets that day,it would be great, cause I'm from Mexico, and believe me,it's so dificult to us to see the cure live very often,I have been a curefan for 12 years and I have seen them just twice. It would be a shame if I miss this concerts, believe me,I won't forget myself. e-mail: chompinena@hotmail.com"

  • Cure covers:
  • I've seen a band named "insight" playing live in a little town near Rennes (France). They've played their own songs of course but several Cure's titles too... as I remember: a strange day, the drowning man, pornography, and a furious forever. I hope to see them again soon cause the singer told me that they use to play the cure and depeche mode songs during their gigs.

    (Thanks Fred)

  • In a follow-up to the report about 'Six Different Ways' being on the Rules of Attraction soundtrack, I saw the film yesterday and was quite surprised to hear almost the entire song being played near the beginning of the film. And it isn't some throwaway in a party scene, or used in the background as the characters talk over it, but dead center, nothing else to interfere with Robert's vocals. But don't go just for that, go because it's an excellent film. I can't wait to see it again. Highest recommendation, though it certainly isn't for everyone.
  • (Thanks to Josh, Musicalshoelace, Terry, Chase, Andrew and Timbus75 for also reporting this)

  • Curespotting:
  • "From an AP review of Rules of Attraction:

Fifteen years later, "The Rules of Attraction" simply feels out of fashion, like wearing a baggy sweater over leggings to sit in the audience at "TRL." Cameos by Fred Savage and Eric Stoltz and a soundtrack of songs by Yaz and The Cure only make the movie seem more dated. "

    "mirror mirror-pale skin, red lips"

tough one, what should be so wrong, feels so right - with reservations. even the most slap happy teenager insticntivley avoids the pale-skin-red-lips combo. but look what it did for snow white: shacked up with 7 men & a snog from a prince! clearly, this weeks tamales have taken notes from snowy. sadie frost's slightly off beat routine compliments her kinda-funky-in-a-primrose-hill-was look, czj (catherine zita jones) knows that it will take more than a famous husband to turn a welsh lassie into a hollywood queen: red lippy is what's needed, red lippy is what she does. mind you, some need more than that. as for you, robert smith, sorting out that edward scissorhands haircut would be a start!

  • Vex Red to work on the new Cure album:
  • From NME:

THE CURE'S STRONG AND PERSISTENT DESIRE

VEX RED are being lined up to work with THE CURE on the veteran goth rockers' new album, NME.COM can reveal. The Aldershot quintet, who were discovered by Slipknot and Korn producer Ross Robinson, have been on tour in the US for the last four months, and were visiting their nu-metal guru in Los Angeles when the invitation came.

"We saw Ross quite a few times while we were on tour, he came to our California shows, but he's been busy," explained guitarist Ant Forbes. "He's working with Robert Smith just now, he's going to be producing the next Cure album. Apparently they like us, so we're going back in the New Year when they start recording."

It is not yet clear exactly what contribution the band will make. "I don't know what we'll be doing, we'll find out when we get there. I never get star-struck, but I will when I meet Robert Smith, we're all massive fans."

Robinson championed Vex Red after hearing their demo and jetting to the UK to watch them rehearse. He went on to produce their debut album, 'Start With A Strong And Persistent Desire', which was released in March.

The band are currently on tour in the UK, their first British tour since March. Since then, they have spent the last four months in the States, playing 127 gigs, including dates on the Warped tour, which Forbes said was an unpleasant experience.

"That was a bit of a mis-match, it was a totally wrong tour for us to do. They had us headlining a small stage, which we thought was bizarre at the time, but decided we'd go with it. The reason was that it clashed with all the main stage bands, all the punk bands, and no one wanted to take it. There were about 200 or 300 people constantly throughout the day, then we were playing to 10 people at night. That wasn't too cool.

"But every tine we played in front of someone, they'd like the music, we kind of won them over in our own way. We've played to so many people in the US now through the sheer amount of shows and constant touring, it was worth doing," he added. "

    - Staying in Brussels: Here's a site that guides you trough different levels of accomodation (hotels, youth hostels, lodging) : www.tib.be

    - Flying to Brussels: If you're flying with RyanAir, please bear in mind that you'll arrive in Charleroi, the so-called Brussels South Airport: this is a one hour bus drive form the city of Brussels. The central airport is called Zaventem National Airport.

    - Extra tickets Berlin: I won't be needing my Berlin tickets anymore, since I'm planning to attend the Brussels' show only. I have 4 tickets for the Trilogy concert at Tempodrom Berlin on Tuesday 12 November. I'm willing to sell them as a pack, you can contact me at jurgen@outrider.be"

"Ryanair fly in to Brussels Charleroi Sud, it is a small airport outside Brussel but Ryanair run an express bus service from Brussels city too the airport and back (takes about 45 min. but doesn't always leave directly after your flight, you may have to wait around) so there is no problem in getting in and out from that airport. you can also use the SNCB train to Charleroi station (www.sncb.be) and then a TEC bus (express bus 68) to get there no problem. but i would say the ryanair bus is easier althought for going back it leaves a couple of hours before your flight from the city so make shure to catch it and check out were to get it from. the other airport is the Zaventem main Brussels airport, a SNCB (www.sncb.be) train will get you into the center of Brussels within 30 minutes or there is an express city bus run by the STIB (www.stib.be) "

  • Curespotting:
  • "I met the author Ian Rankin on Wednesday at a book signing. He's written a series of crime fiction novels, with the central character John Rebus. I'm not sure how they're doing internationally but in the UK he's become a very popular writer. The ninth Rebus novel is called "The Hanging Garden", which involves Rebus investigating a suspected WWII war criminal whilst also trying to break up gangland activity in Glasgow. The book contains several Cure references, including a games arcade called "Fascination Street" and a gang leader known as Mr Pink Eyes. Anyway... when I met Ian Rankin I asked if he was a big fan of The Cure. He very kindly told me how much he liked The Cure, and told me the following story despite the queue of people behind me. He said he'd written the book whilst living in France, but had been worried by the legal and copyright issues, particularly by his use of lines from the song to introduce each section of the novel. He contacted The Cure's management to ask for their permission. Eventually he received a call from The Cure's manager, saying he had discussed the matter with Robert Smith. Robert was happy to give permission for the quotes to be used, and his fee would be... a signed copy of the finished book, signed 'To Bob'"!

I don't have anything to do with the books, other than the fact that I've read all of them and highly recommend them, and I can confirm that the author seems a very intelligent and friendly person. The books are published by Orion and the author has a website at www.ianrankin.net ."

"Just to let you know that in the October french issue of Virgin, the instore magazine, there is an interwiew of Gaz Coombes from Supergrass in which he recalls "the pleasure i felt the first time i heard Robert Smith's voice"(and also Johnny Marr's guitar technique).Later in the interwiew he also recalls listening to his uncle's record collection(Neil Young, Sex Pistols,Elvis)and how that helped him understand the influences from groups he likes, The Cure, The Smiths, The House of Love, The Primitives..."

  • Ok, so now we will need some travel/hotel tips for fans going to Brussel:
  • "I do need a lot of info about the Brussel show.

    1. Is it ok to fly with ryanair from London to Brussel?

    2. I don't intend to stay in Brussel for too long. I'm planning to go there on the 7th itself & returning the next day. So in the meantime, where do I put up for the rest of the night? I don't have much dough.

    3. Is it safe to make reservation with pay & go music?

I can be contacted at majorcure@hotmail.com.

    Ben"

  • More about Ryan Air:
  • "Chris White sent me this:

Well if you read COF today and saw the part about Lubeck airport not being in the centre of Hamburg dont panic. As you can guess all Ryan air flight are cheap and this is because they do not go into large city airports. (Think the Venice trip in the Summer?) So to put your minds at rest, please check this out.

Airport - Luebeck Airport is some 8 kilometres outside the city centre and is easily accessed by car and public transport.

Bus Travel - The number 6 bus connects the airport to Luebeck's main railway station.

Shuttle Bus to Hamburg from Lubeck airport - (This looks like a description of areturn journey to me?) Bus departs from Central Bus Station (ZOB) near Hamburg's main train station. The bus stop is situated south of the train station on the corner of Adenaueralle and Brockesstrasse Tickets can be purchased on the bus only (not available at the airport) at a cost of €8 for a single fare - Pounds will also be accepted No advance bookings are necessary Journey time Approx. 1 hour 15 mins See the full timetable <http://www.nnvg.de/ryanair/index.html> for details."

    (Thanks Ange)

"Ryan Air does indeed fly to Lubeck and not Hamburg, as advertised. However, I have just booked 3 tickets from Stanstead to the REAL city of Hamburg on Air Berlin - total cost 77 pounds! www.airberlin.de"

    (Thanks Colin)

  • 'Six Different Ways' will be on the soundtrack album for Rules of Attraction (which opens tomorrow). No idea if it will be featured in the film, but the Brett Easton Ellis book that it's based on had a number of Cure references in it.

  • Curespotting:
  • "DURST FINDS HIMSELF

Fred Durst says he has taken a "less is more" approach with Limp Bizkit's forthcoming album and claims he has finally found "the real Fred Durst" by doing so.

Speaking to MTV, Durst said he had written 32 new tracks for the LP, which he hopes will be ready for release in spring 2003.

The singer says he has felt sensitive and vulnerable in recent months - a feeling he partly attributes to a post September 11 change in attitude.

Uncharacteristically, Durst also claims to have spent a lot of time listening to classical music, Patsy Cline, Mazzy Star and the Cure."

    (Thanks Dudley)

"Just to told you that RockDeLux , one of the most importants musical magazines of Spain , to commemorate their 200 number, has published their " 200 best albums of the 20th century " list, and The Cure is in the number 186 with Disintegration."

    (Thanks Maria)

"I just got back now from The Strokes concert in Toronto which was great. To my surprise, The Cure were a part of the night. 'Close To Me' was played before the band came on stage, and 'Boys Don't Cry' was played when the lights came on after the last song. Definitely made the night even better!"

    (Thanks John)

  • Cure start rehearsals:
  • "The drummer in my band sometimes practises at a rehearsal studio in (deleted) - he told me last night that he saw it has been booked out for the next 3 weeks by The Cure - not telling the name as I think they should be left alone.

he also teaches drums at Robert Smith's old school and there is a picture of him up in the music room."

    (Thanks Ginge)

  • Possible problem with Ryan-Air?:
  • "I am not sure whether I am right, but it says that Ryan-Air is flying from London-Stansted to Lubeck-Hamburg. This could be one of those typical Ryan-Air - traps: if they are landing in Lübeck there are still about 70 kilometres left to get to Hamburg. So if people come from GB they are in the WRONG city! This is a strategy of Ryan-Air to always mention a big city which is around the small airport they are flying to (the small airport which is much cheaper for them and allows them to make these prices). So before booking on Ryan-Air you should check the target-airport, however cheap the flight is.... Hope it goes all right for the guys!"

    (Thanks Ceho)

  • More help for those going to the shows in Germany:
  • "hotels: http://www.hrs.de

flights flom cologne to berlin: www.germanwings.de (very cheap: from 29 euro) (also possible to combine flight from london to cologne and then from cologne to berlin)"

    (Thanks Hans)

"Just a short mail to let you know that i've created a web page for all cure fans in France who would like to go Germany. This webpage is somehow related to a french Cure forum (http://thecureforum.free.fr/).

The point of this webpage is to gather all the french fans who plan to go to Germany. This might as well help them to find another cure fans who live in the same area and maybe share the same trip. This is just a meeting place, i do not organise any trip to germany or book hotel rooms. This is just a place to meet fans from the same area of France.

This will be only interesting for French Cure fans, so i don't know if it's worth a news on your website, but who knows ! Everything is explained (in French) on the front page of this website, but french Cure fans just have to send a e-mail to this address rdvcure@aol.com with some informations such as:

E-mail address Name City (+ Zip Code) + the first 2 numbers of their telephone (the area code only like 01 or 02, 03..., this is to help me to organise the list) Concerts attended (Hamburg, Berlin 1 or 2) Transport (car, train, plane...)

The website is here : http://membres.lycos.fr/lordtoussaint/

    The e-mail adress : rdvcure@aol.com

I've made a french version of this text in french if you want to post as well on your website:

    (Thanks Patrice)

  • Another Berlin ticket for sale:
  • "I have a single extra ticket to the Berlin show on 11/12 available. I have already been paid back by the person who is backing out on me, and I have no desire to profit from this, so I am willing to give the ticket to the first person who emails me at Whammy2828@aol.com If possible, I'd really prefer somebody in America, so I don't have to deal with sending it overseas."

    (Thanks Whammy2828)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I just thought I'd fill you in with a little more info on the Eclipse breath mints commercial that was mentioned. It's for a new breath-freshening product called Eclipse flash strips and it features "Let Love" by Res (who I think also stars in the commercial), which is the song mentioned a while back that uses the bassline from "Other Voices". The song can be found on the album How I Do, for anyone who's interested. Sort of unusual hearing a Cure bassline in a mainstream commercial, isn't it?"

    (Thanks Josh)

"i was watching a movie, "ocean tribe", that told the story of 5 friends interested in surfing; one of those had lost his legs on an accident, so the other four decided to bring him to the sea one last time, when i suddenly heard on the background "to wish impossible things" in its entirety! such a strange moment to play it because the scenes showed the 4 boys surfing in the ocean and the other one playing violin on the beach along with the song."

    (Thanks Andrea)

"I found this article in a melbourne newspaper called Taking the Cure. it says something along the lines of: Sydney band Baggsmen have covered the cure classic Close to Me with a dub/rap/drum'n'bass version which is sung by a female vocalist. the were expecting the song not to get the tick of approval from Robert Smith, "just to warn you he, hates rap."

    (Thanks Tom)

"In the Oct issue of Spin, there's a sidebar Q&A with Uncle Kracker which he mentions the Cure as one of the bands he listens to when he is feeling down. He specifically mentions Standing on a Beach. "

"FriendsReunited, the hugely popular web site, is branching out into the music CD business. Users of the site will be asked to vote for their favourite tracks and the most popular will appear on the 1980s CD that will be in the shops next month. Co-founder Steve Pankhurst said: “The CD could end up being slightly leftfield and feature The Cure and The Icicle Works. Or it could be very mainstream and feature the likes of Kajagoogoo and Katrina and the Waves."

On film, Batman adopted it - in Gotham City of course - as did Morticia, the mother in The Addams Family. Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians was a classic Goth too. Then there is rock's Robert Smith, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Marilyn Manson and Kelly Osborne. Hollywood stars Christina Ricci and Winona Ryder have sported the style as well.

  • An update on The Cure signing with Artist Direct Records in the U.S. - I contacted the label to ask about it, and got this reply from Heidi Robinson:
  • "Nothing is announceable yet, but we ALWAYS issue press releases when we sign new artists".

So it sounds like they are working on it, but maybe not quite finalized just yet.

  • Some more travel tips for the German shows:
  • "VERY Cheap flights to hamburg - £4.99! Ryan Air From London Stansted(STN) to Lubeck Hamburg De(LBC) Sat, 09Nov02 Flight FR434 Depart STN at 06:40 and arrive LBC at 09:05

"I found another place where you could search for affordable places to stay in Berlin, some even in nice private rooms:

berlinzimmer.de (most offers in German, but some in English as well)

We booked our room via this. As of now, there seem to be still rooms available at Novalis III and a place in the Belziger Str. - and more in other places we didn't check, but these are pretty close to the 'Drom.

    2x3 Berlin tickets to sell:

Due to this ticket ordering mess - and some messy friends, i would also like to sell my surplus tickets, without profit: 3 tickets for each Berlin show (all standing area), for 37 EUR plus P&P each.

I've also got 1 ticket (standing) for Hamburg left, which i would like to sell for 35 EUR, plus P&P.

If interested, please write to: rat.art@web.de"

  • Anyone in Toronto want to transcribe the Porl interview from Much More Music?:
  • "A couple of weeks ago I emailed Much More Music (a music tv channel in Canada) for a copy of transcripts for Porl's interview they had aired earlier. Unfortunately, they don't provide transcripts. But the producer of the show sugguested that they could arrange a screening of that original show and I could create my own transcripts. The problem is, it has to be done in Toronto, Canada, and I live at the opposite end of the country! So, if anyone is interested in volunteering to do so and share the transcripts here at COF, please contact me at hoion@yahoo.com for details."

"I've just spotted a beautiful entreat poster of robert smith in the video for the brand new "Superheroes"(danish band) single called "Someone Else". It is a very sad song with all the band members and actors just crying through the whole thing..The song is about a guy who has lost in the thrilling game of love - he has just realized that his beloved loves "someone else"."
