Suggest The Cure for Rock
In Rio Lisbon 2006:
"There will be this huge event
here in Portugal called "Rock in Rio Lisbon" (http://rockinrio-lisboa.sapo.pt/index.html?lang=en).
It's a concert festival that will happen May-June next 2006. I have
been there in 2004 and it's gorgeous. Right now they are accepting
suggestions of bands to play during the festival. Help us to get them
to play here. Send an e-mail to contacto@rockinrio-lisboa.sapo.pt
suggesting The Cure or any other band or singer you want. But don't
forget to suggest them."
(Thanks Claudio)
Curespotting:
From the Mercuray
News:
"But before he dropped out of high school at age 17, Thomas
decided that the Cure's Robert Smith would be his role model. After
spending time with various acts, Thomas formed Matchbox Twenty in 1996
and achieved success with the band's debut CD, ``Yourself or Somebody
Like You,'' which went platinum in July 1997."
(Thanks Craig)
"The Cure were mentioned in a
Chicago Tribune article about Shakira.
"Perhaps because the songs are in English rather than Spanish,
the music moves closer to Anglo rock and pop, dipping into folk-rock,
power ballads and the Cure."
(Thanks iwannashagsimon)
"Interviewed on the french channel
Canal+ on the 22nd november , the Canadian singer PAUL ANKA did a short
reference to The Cure durind the
interview, saying that "THE LOVECATS" was one of the most
difficult song he adapted on his latest album "Rock Swings".
(But didn't said why)."
(Thanks Lotofsly)
"Sunday , the french quizz ask
et the answer was correctly : What's the name from the english band
of 80's who R.S. was the singer ? Shit R.S is
not dead & The Cure is alive ,always alive."
(Thanks M)
"Saw your update on 21st November
saying the Ausse show "Celebrity Overhaul" played a Cure song.
Last Sunday they actually played 2 Cure songs the same
night, I can't remember which 2 now. I actually heard a couple of
Cure songs on different shows on the same show last year / season.
Guess someone behind thee scenes of the show is a fan."
(Thanks B)
"On November 18th I went to U2
show in Atlanta, Phillips arena. They played "Just Like Heaven" while
roadies prepared the stage for U2. Bunch
of people (including myself) did sing along."
(Thanks Giedrius)
From IO Film:
"This has a very Brit heavy
cast, which may be down to the influence of Burton's real life wife
Helena Bonham Carter, but I prefer to think it is because he is secretly
Robert Smith from The Cure without the make-up and one day he'll forget
to do the American accent and all the subterfuge will have been for
naught."
From The
Independent:
"I'm sitting in the darkened auditorium of the Theatre
Royal in Plymouth, peering over the top of two identical bird's-nest
barnets that would make The Cure's Robert Smith proud. The owners
of these magnificent hairpieces whisper to one another and occasionally
gesticulate, flinging an alarming fist of scissors in my direction."
(Thanks Tempest)
Nov. 21st
Nothing new to add, but NME and Chart Attack
have articles about Robert's recent comments.
(Thanks Fab G and Steven)
Check out Roger's website for a news update - album
in late Feb., live shows in the spring and a possible remix by
Jimmy Tamborello of The Postal Service
and Dntel. Keeping
my fingers and toes crossed for that one! And if you don't own 'Give
Up' from TPS and 'Life is Full of Possibilities' from Dntel, what's
wrong with you? : )

In Between Days by the Cure
"Go on go on just walk away go on go on your choice
is made"
Known as "the go on, go on song" by my two sons, this
has been a requested favourite in the car, or at home where we
can dance to it for some time. My five-year-old doesn't like my darker
gothic preferences (Fields of the Nephilim are too scary) and the
three-year-old is fond of Kaiser Chiefs, but Robert Smith's singing
is instantly recognisable to them and they can now be classed as Cure
fans. It beats nursery rhymes all the time.

"On Friday (November 18) on
the Australian quiz show 'Temptation' the following question was
asked... and correctly answered, "What UK band
has a name synonymous with remedy"
(Thanks Jo)
"I was just flicking through
the staions here in Australia and came across Celebrity Overhaul,
which is a terrible show where "celebrities" that most people have
never heard of try and lose weight (i'm not sure if other countries
have their own version). Anyway A Forest was playing in the background.
I nearly pooed my pants! So inappropriate!"
(Thanks Laurel)
From the L.A.
Times Calendar Live
"And there were times (especially on "Oh, Sweetheart")
when those vocals and his sad-eyed stare approached the same cool
desperation perfected by the Cure's Robert Smith, minus the Goth threads."

Billboard
is running a story based on Robert's update.
Update:
Yahoo (US and
UK)
have picked up the Billboard story.
(Thanks mobryan1978, Steven

Curespotting:
"From Straight.com
Frontman-guitarist Shawn Christensen’s clear, deep
lyrics are still sung Robert Smith–style over bassist Amanda Tannen’s
echo-laden background vocals; Michael Jurin’s atmospheric, Cure-inspired
guitar riffs tumble in time with Arthur Kremer’s unobtrusive drum
beats. This is Stellastarr*’s formula and, apparently, the band’s
sticking to it. "
(Thanks Tempest)
"Here are 5 little references
to THE CURE here in France:
book:
"L'Odysse du Rock" by Florent Mazzoleni, Hors Collection
edition
"Rock n Roll la discotheque ideale
101 disques qui ont changes le monde", by Philippe Manoeuvre,
Rock n Folk/Albin Michel edition
the two books are about the history of rock and in
each book there is a big pic of the band and a full page about them,
but more especially
about... you guessed it, Pornography.
album reviews in "Longueur d'Ondes" free magazine,
issue 32, autumn 2005:
The Editors 'The Back Room'; they are compared
to The Cure and "they don't hide their rreferences".
The Organ 'Grab That Gun'; it says that they
have "the melancholy of The Cure"
Finally, a German class is preparing a theatre play
in which the hero is supposed to face a broken bridge when supposed
to cross a river under a
storm at night and they were looking for some background
music. I told them to use the intro of 'the same deep water
as you', and they liked it
so they will."

I've set up a Frappr for COF. Nothing
great, but a nice way to get a sense of where everyone is from. So add your
location and let's cover that map with Cure fans. : )

And some info from HispaCure
and Universal Music Spain:
"This is Ivan from hispaCure Fan Club Spain.
Last week we spoke with some people from UNIVERSAL
MUSIC SPAIN. They told us some news-rumors about The Cure in 2006:
- New album and New Tour (spring 2006). Robert told
us in our meeting with the band after Benicassim Concert. He also
announced it during the
press conference at this festival.
- First Quarter 2006 (january - march): They will
release the new remaster deluxe editions. UNIVERSAL MUSIC SPAIN
told us that they only
have news about THE HEAD ON THE DOOR remaster album
... but they also suppose that it will be also two more delux editions.
- First Quarter 2006 (january - march): The Cure
will release IN ORANGE DVD !!
This is the info UNIVERSAL MUSIC SPAIN had one week

"I Cried For You" on the 5th of December. On the promo blurb on
the single it says "On the AA side Katie delivers an emotionally taut

received the seal of approval from Robert Smith and was recorded as
the theme tune of the DreamWorks film of the same name starring Reece
Witherspoon"."

"In the Dutch evening
newspaper NRC Handelsblad from last Thursday there was a review
of an Oasis concert in A'dam the day before and recensist Hester
Carvalho opened his article with the following sentences:"It
takes about twenty years before bands are 'rediscovered'. The
Cure and Gang of Four for example are groups from the beginning of
the 80's who inspire nowadays bands". After that he asks himself
if Oasis will also
be able to influence musicians in the future
like the beforementioned groups did and still do. Good to read
that Smith & Co. haven't been
forgotten in the Netherlands."

Curespotting:
"Last Wednesday (2nd
of November) Jamie Oliver was on touring Italy (he is a famous
UK TV chef). It was a very bizzare show as he was cooking
food for some Italian monks in a monestary. He got tired of
hearing their msuic (all chants, but probably sounded a bit like
some of the Faith album) so he played them one of his favourite tracks
from his VW camper van stereo. Low and behold it was the Cure
with Close to Me (from the mixed up album). He said he plays the
song every day. Not only can the guy cook but he also has good
taste in music."

"Magnus Sveningsson,
bass player with the Cardigans admits to being a Cure fan on
the band's official messageboard (http://www.cardigans.com):
Hey there, I was wondering what you might
say to an ex-hardcore punker who thinks he's going a bit soft
because he like The Cardigans. Its not me just a friend of mine
who is a fine musician and cant help but like your music, he feels
he's turning to the dark side, but I tell him dont worry although
Cardigans have been branded as PoP by most I see the band as being some
fine musicians making some great songs.
I guess my question is what genre of music
do YOU feel you are. Vrak, 2005-10-28 11:23:52
-----
Well that´s how I felt when I left the
heavymetal stuff and went for the Cure back in 89! There is
so much more than just punk, even if it fills its purpose from time
to time. I have broaden my horizons so much since we started as a
band. Back then I was only into british indie. Now I am into anything
that´s good, no matter where and when it comes from.

From PopMatters
"We knew a handful of friendly people who
liked college rock bands like the Cure and the Smiths, but
neither the acid wit of Morrissey nor the fey affectations of
Robert Smith was aggressive or angry enough for us to channel
our frustrations (in much broader terms, the Cure were pussies)."
From Buffalo
News
"Take writer Marc Spitz's chapter on Goth
culture, titled "Suburban High Schools, the Cure and the Secret
of Happiness." The piece approaches one of the more intriguing,
albeit obvious, of subcultures with a view both respectful
and slightly mocking. "Every high school in America has a Goth
faction (every high school in the suburbs anyway)," Spitz writes.
"Goths have dispensed with morbid preoccupations that haunt rave
kids, hippies and fans of Shania Twain and are uniquely able to enjoy
graveyards for what they are: cool places to get high."
The section also includes a helpful chart
of just what is Goth, and what is not ("Jesus was way Goth.
Buddha is not. Easter is Goth. Christmas is not. Cats are Goth.
Dogs are not."), and offers tributes to the still-lipsticked-after-all-these-years
likes of Robert Smith and Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and the Banshees,
Goth-punk trailblazers."
From INQ7
"The Cure
Robert Smith formed The Easy Cure in 1976
when he was only 17. Two years later, the band changed its
name to The Cure. There’s something about The Cure’s music that
just hooks you, and soon enough you’re addicted. It can suspend
you in gravity, or keep you afloat in a misty dream with its enticing
tunes and contemplative lyrics. If you’re curious to hear the band’s
darker works, dig for songs composed from the late ’70s to the early
’80s. “Killing An Arab” is of note. This song is not a racial attack
but actually inspired by Nobel winner Albert Camus’ existential masterpiece,
“The Stranger.” Keep your ears up for “The Hanging Garden” and “Lullaby,”
for nights of flight and unusual shapes."
From Aversion
"Name-checking those influences ought
to serve as the final manifesto needed for understanding the
band’s sound. Things couldn’t be more obvious. The moody and surreal
soundscapes of The Cure always slithered into The Deftones’ tunes
adding murky depths and dream-pop ambiences to the lulls between the
band’s musical storms. Despite its thunk, the ’Tones’ music has always
been deceptively melodic – chalk that up to the shades of everyone
from Morrissey up to pop diva.
With those tools so close at hand, it’s easy
to deconstruct The Deftones’ originals. The brooding moments
of “Wax and Wane” are gleaned from Robert Smith’s darkest depression
more than Korn’s most self-indulgent temper tantrum."
(Thanks Tempest)
