  • More about The Cure at the Interpol show in Cologne, Germany last week:

  • "the whole band was there. After the Interpol show I saw Roger, Perry and Jason standing and watching from beside the stage. I went over and spoke to Roger who told me that they did TOP OF THE POPS in Cologne. When I made my way to the exit I saw Jason coming out from the backstage part and I went over to him. He was really nice and chatty and told me that the whole band was there. He was looking for the rest of the band and asked me if I had seen them! When I eventually got out of the venue I went looking for the stage entrance and saw Simon sitting in a van reading a bike catalogue. I waited for quite a while (nobody else was there)when Perry came out got his guitar and a bag from the van and went back in. Roger and Jason came out and at long last Robert. When I shouted for him he came over, signed my Interpol setlist and was really charming. I've never met Robert before and it really was a special moment. He didn't talk much, just kept looking at me. They left without Perry.
On the motorway on my way home I was overtaken by the two vans! They were probably on their way to Hannover, where they appeared at THE DOME the night after."

    (Thanks Tina)

    Strange Day One-Shot

By Damon Hurd & Tatiana Gill

Skipping school to buy the latest Cure album, Miles arrives at the deserted Media Play parking lot waiting for the store to open. Here he meets Anna, who skipped school classes for the same agenda. A free spirit, Anna takes it upon herself to bring introverted Miles out of his black-clad shell. A Strange Day is an original graphic novella about alienation, kindred spirits, and two Cure-head’s serendipitous friendship, and the lessons they learn from each other.

    Out in February I believe.

"Whilst watching VH1, I saw the intro to their show "100 Most Cheesetastic Video Tricks" and noticed a clip of the "Mint Car" music video (Robert as a pharaoh). So, like a good Cure fan, I continued watching. They ended up labeling "Mint Car" under their #60: Faking of the Making of a Video and showed another little snippet of Robert walking around the set in the video. However, none of the little commenting "celebrities" mentioned anything specific about the "Mint Car" video."

    (Thanks Lisa)

"On Vh1 there is a special called "The most Cheesetastic Video tricks" One was "egyptians" They showed Mint car and then had a contest of who makes the better Cleopatra Robert Smith or Susanna Hoff from the Bangles. Robert of course won...Weird Al said because he had better makeup and Kennedy said "of course Robert Smith, the man sold 27 million albums and she is probley working at a 7-11"(she must be a fan)."

  • A report from The Dome taping yesterday:

  • "I was at the dome show yesterday. during the show they showed robert interviewed by anastasia (mtv-host) on a screen. robert said, they played a show with scooter (german techno-act) before and are kind of old friends. I wasn't able to understand the rest of the 3 minute long interview, cause some german tv-stars appeared on the stage and all the kids started screaming. later the boys performed taking off. they had sound problems with roberts mic, cause his voice got lost from time to time. after the song a woman, I think it was the unit manager, came onstage and robert, perry and simon started to discuss it with her. after a minute perry took his guitar and went off. robert was still talking to the woman, but she just shook her head. on the contrary to the cure the german pop act "jeanette" was allowed to do a second take half an hour before."

    (Thanks Anne)

  • Curespotting:

  • "Yesterday it was "Placebo day" on MTV Italy, and the prime time show was an exclusive concert taped a few weeks ago. In the interview prior to the live show, Robert got mentioned twice: first, when they were discussing what the band listened to before going on stage, they said that "Probably Robert Smith is our favourite pop artist. He writes the perfect, pure pop. And he also made a good album". Then a few minutes later, discussing about a time when Pixies' Frank Black joined them, the Canal + concert was mentioned. The interviewer asked him how they got to know Robert, and they answered they met him at Bowie's birthday concert. Brian also remembered the time he interviewed Robert a few years ago."

"This isn't maybe the most positive thing, but in the music poll in the December issue of 'Playboy,' The Cure -'The Cure' is an option listed for the 'biggest disappointment' of 2004."

    (Thanks mr. lent)

"In the newest US rolling stone magazine Brandon boyd of incubus lists his favorite songs of all time and the cure has made his list twice.

    4. "The Kiss" -THE CURE
This was the song that was playing when i kissed a girl for the first time.

    10. "JUST LIKE HEAVEN" -THE CURE
This was another part of my making-out-when-i-first-heard-this-deal.

And The Cure has 2 songs in the 500 greatests songs of all time:

    #278  "PICTURES OF YOU"
"Most love songs are just calculated attemps ar commercial exploitation. They're not anything to do with love as i understand it," said Cure leader Smith. After the relatively cheerful pop songs of Kiss me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, he wanted to write the Cure's heaviest songs yet: With this epic of casading synths and broken dreams, he succeeded.

    #483  "Just Like Heaven"
"Ive never been a big fan of irony," Smith has said, which might explain why this reverie of love, cut at a vineyard in the south of france, is his favorite cure song. Their girlfriends hung out at the sessions, which influenced the music. "the girls would sit on the sofa in the back of the control room and give the songs marks out of ten," Smith said. "so there was a really big female input." It was the Cure's first U.S. Top Forty hit."

    (Thanks Johanna and Dennis)

"Last Tuesday I saw a german lifestyle TV show, Avenzio, and they played "Boys don't cry" as background music!"

  • A reminder that the deluxe 2-cd edition of 'Three Imaginary Boys' will be out on Dec. 7th. And now thanks to Special Ops Media & Rhino, we can offer a pre-release "Listening Party":

  • WHO NEEDS FLU SHOTS WHEN RHINO HAS THE CURE!

Highly Anticipated Cure Reissue Campaign Begins With Expanded, Remastered THREE IMAGINARY BOYS December 7

LOS ANGELES - Twenty-five years after The Cure began their global pop invasion with their debut disc, THREE IMAGINARY BOYS, Rhino Records gives the album its first-ever U.S. domestic release with a deluxe two-disc edition loaded with previously unreleased tracks. THREE IMAGINARY BOYS will be available December 7 at all retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a suggested retail price of $18.98.

The album marks the kickoff to Rhino Records' revitalization of The Cure catalog. Each title will receive a sonic upgrade and be released as a deluxe double-disc set featuring the original album on one CD and numerous rarities on the other. In addition, each release will come with a 16-page booklet filled with photos and tour memorabilia from the personal archives of vocalist Robert Smith, as well as a track-by-track commentary and notes by U.K. music scribe Johnny Black.

Cure fans have long clamored for THREE IMAGINARY BOYS, an energetic 1979 U.K. debut which features "10:15 Saturday Night," "Grinding Halt," "Fire In Cairo," and a quirky rendition of Jimi Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." The band's debut U.S. album, Boys Don't Cry, featured many of the songs on THREE IMAGINARY BOYS along with singles like "Jumping Someone Else's Train" and "Boys Don't Cry." The Rhino reissue offers the original U.K. album with an added previously unreleased instrumental ("The Weedy Burton"), as well as a 20-track bonus disc which includes the additional tracks from Boys Don't Cry, previously unreleased studio and home demo versions, live renditions, and other curiosities. In total the package includes six previously unreleased songs, eight previously unreleased versions of songs, and 17 tracks never before available on CD.

Johnny Black's liner notes, which make use of extensive and exclusive
interviews with Robert Smith, provide fascinating insight into the making of this classic album. One interesting story tells how The Cure managed to get the album recorded with virtually no budget: they simply snuck into Morgan Studios at night once the Jam had finished their sessions, and, using the Jam's gear, recorded through the night till dawn.

It's been almost three decades since a 17-year-old Smith formed The Easy Cure in Crawley, England. Despite various lineup changes, The Cure have forged an ongoing career highlighted by an astonishing run of artistic and commercial successes, including chart-topping hit singles, gold and platinum records, countless awards, critical acclaim, and an international fan base that follows the band with religious fervor. They have secured their place in music history by shaping modern rock as we know it today.

october this year. The radio is listenable on internet here: http://www.ouifm.fr/ "

Update: There was an interview too, and once again Robert says that if Ross hadn't been involved, and he (Robert) would have been "left to my own devices", the album would sound very different. Then again, he says "we wouldn't have made this record without Ross". Setlist: 'The End of the World', 'Boys Don't Cry', 'Taking Off'.  'TEOTW' should never, ever be done acoustically again. Just saying. : )

  • Rome newspaper review:

  • "The Cure: Dignified

It is a comeback, even though more dignified and credible than Backstreet Boys' one, but with style re-shaped according to current fashion. A few false notes (but it is not easy to play with 10 degrees). Never mind: on Mtv the virtuous certainties of music end up overwhelmed by glam"

  • The Irish Examiner picks up some of the story from last week's Scottish Daily Record interview:

  • Smith slams over-priced tours

The Cure's legendary frontman Robert Smith has hit out a musicians who charge large sums of money for concert tickets.

The 'Boys don't cry' singer is proud his band's American Curiosa live extravaganza kept admission prices to a minimum earlier this year, and he can't understand why other performers look to profit so much from their fans.

He says: "Curiosa was the best live touring experience of my life so far. It exceeded all my expectations. It was particularly satisfying that we managed to do Curiosa without sponsorship and keep ticket prices low and still make a little money.

"The Sting and Annie Lennox package, for example, was more than $100 (€76) a ticket.

"Prices like that are crippling promoters and artists further down the ladder, because when fans spend that much on one ticket, they can't afford to go see so many other shows."

  • "From the Scottish Daily Record:

    CURIOSA & CURIOSA
    Nov 19 2004

The Cure are all set for a new mega tour as The Gothfather sets out to undercut the opposition

    By John Dingwall

THE Cure rocker Robert Smith has announced he is planning a Curiosa tour in the UK early next year and wants to include Scotland in his plans. The legendary British group - who have survived 25 years together - first took their Lollapalooza-style festival tour to the US earlier this year.

Featuring The Cure and their favourite bands, such as Interpol, on the bill, it was a massive success and now the man fans nicknamed The Gothfather would like to do something similar in the UK.

Insiders say the band have already been in touch with promoters to see if the dates could work in Britain and Scottish dates are among those being considered.

Smith said: 'I'd love to do another Curiosa tour, maybe even next year. I might even do a British version, but with the kind of weather we have here in the early part of the year, it would probably have to be an indoor thing.'

He has hit out at the superstars who charge fans exorbitant fees to see them, saying they are destroying live music.

He continued: 'Curiosa was the best live touring experience of my life so far. It exceeded all my expectations. It was particularly satisfying that we managed to do Curiosa without sponsorship and keep ticket prices low and still make a little money.

'The Sting and Annie Lennox package, for example, was more than $100 a ticket.

'Prices like that are crippling promoters and artists further down the ladder, because when fans spend that much on one ticket, they can't afford to go to see so many other shows.'

News of The Cure's plans to tour next year coincides with the launch of a new version of the classic album which launched the band back in 1979.

Three Imaginary Boys is been re-issued as a double CD deluxe edition having been remastered at Abbey Road with a CD of bonus tracks, memorabilia and unseen photographs.

The Cure's quarter century of albums also includes Seventeen Seconds (1980) which included one of The Cure's greatest ever singles A Forest, Faith (1981), the darker Pornography (1983) and the pop album Japanese Whispers, which includes the singles Lovecats and Let's Go To Bed.

In 1984 came The Top, The Head On The Door (1985), Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987), 1989 gave us Disintegration, Wish in 1992, Wild Mood Swings in 1996, Bloodflowers in 2004 and The Cure in 2004.

Smith explained: 'The Three Imaginary Boys re-issue is actually just the start of a programme of re-issuing all of our back catalogue and it will have the same care and attention lavished on it. Three Imaginary Boys is now exactly as we heard it in the studio when we recorded it.

'It's great to have it sounding like it should again.'

    (Thanks Lenore)

"Was checking out www.jj72.org tonight, and I came across an interview with Mark Greaney ( vocalist ) in which he was asked what songs he would most like to cover. One of his choices was A forest..... see? I always new that a band as good as jj72 had to have good taste."

  • Some photos from the MTV show in Rome today.

  • If you don't want to know what happened at the Europe Music Awards before watching it tonight (on MTV2 in the US), stop reading now. Ok, for the rest of you, The Cure lost Best Video to 'Hey Ya' by Outkast. They played 'The End of the World' on the MTV pre-show, and Robert introduced the live performance by Gwen Stefani.

  • (Thanks Michael)

  • Here's the setlist from the MTV show in Rome today (so much for only doing one song!):

  • Three Imaginary Boys
    Fascination Street
    High
    Let's Go To Bed
    Lovesong
    Inbetween Days
    Play For Today
    Boys Don't Cry
    The End of the World

    they played about 50 minutes.

Update: "Well, Lacricure isn't exactly right. They played for 33 minutes (i know it because i recorded it and so my vcr shows the time).
There also was a short interview a few minutes before the show: it didn't tell us anything special, just that he was very excited. then he was asked about the wembley appearance with placebo, he said that they are friends since 97, and back in paris at the canal+ anniversaire concert brian asked him to join them on stage and he did, to return the favour.
The show was nice, Robert seemed in a very good mood. The setlist was spectacular, especially in the first half !!! 3IB and High, I didn't expect them at all ! A really comic feature is that (you'll see that as soon as someone rips the video, I know for sure someone will), they were all wearing coats (even though these days the weather is not so bad in italy), so it was quite an unusual dressing for a show ! Simon even wore those hats with special protection for the ears, too. Perry and Simon took them off eventually."

    (Thanks Lacricure and Pietro)

  • New bands are proud to pinch from the U.K.'s postpunk movement

Is the latest wave of breaking rock bands merely recycling sounds of the past? Every act has its influences. But a host of guitar-driven bands that is moving up the charts or generating buzz in the press bears more than a passing resemblance to a specific clutch of older groups.

The Killers, Interpol, the Rapture and Radio 4 each plays music that represents a Frankensteinian restitching of the Cure, the Smiths, Joy Division and Gang of Four.

"Sorry it took so long to send this, but at the beginning of the month (Monday 1st) Chris Moyles played Love Cats on his show on Radio 1. It was during his "Buzz Off" segment, where he plays a track of his choice from his personal collection and the other guys who work on the show (as well as the listening audience) have to decide whether he plays the whole thing or not. Love Cats received 88% of listeners' votes in favour of it, which is one of the highest they've ever had.

Also, Gwen Stefani was a guest on the show last Monday (8th) and mentioned that she wanted to make her solo project upbeat and dancey because she has fond memories of going to clubs and dancing to stuff like the Cure."

    (Thanks Mr. Moose)

"for the final episode of surreal life coming up this sunday about the greatest moments of it and everything.. you hear "END OF THE WORLD" for

"I have heard on "Idolos", the portuguese programa that is the same as American Idol, the acoustic version of Why can't I be you. And very frequently, as they show scenes of various moments of the show. I have also heard "Close to me" in a brazilian program about restaurants where people sit altogether in one table. Very cool!"

  • The Cure will be appearing on "The Dome":

  • "this is probably the worst thing the band ever decided... they will play the worst of all crap german shows 'THE DOME', inbetween lots of boybands, crap german singers + bands you thought they'd better never exist...http://thedome.rtl2.de/show/lineup/content_32.html"

    (Thanks Dennis)

"not sure if you already posted it, but The Cure will be playing "Taking Off" on November 26th at "The Dome" in Hannover, Germany. A few words concerning "The Dome": It is definitely the worst German music show. It is an arena packed with 13 year old girls and you can be sure to hear the worst of the worst chart music there. Most acts play playback and it is really horrible that The Cure are playing there. I just can´t imagine why this is happening, the 13 year old girls will hate them, because The Cure are no teenstars and nobody with the slightest taste in music will watch it. Very stupid. You can see the whole line up here and believe me: Nelly is really the best one there (apart from The Cure) and I hate Nelly.

The show will be airing on RTL2, but I´m not sure when."

    (Thanks Martin)

Seattle (5-3) -- They could finish 8-8 ... they could make the Super Bowl... all bets are off. These guys aren't even worth discussing. It's like when my roommate JackO tried to analyze the lyrics to "The Forest" by The Cure in college. Why even bother? There was no answer."

  • Robert & Billy cover The Bee Gees. WTF?

  • Billy Corgan Brings In Robert Smith on Vocals for Bee Gees Cover
Posted by admin on November 04, 2004
Source: Artisan News Service - via forum-thread by RockNMouth

Billy Corgan, with his new poetry book Blinking with Fists currently sitting at #24 on the New York Times Best Seller list, has apparently finished his solo album. According to Corgan, this album is truly a solo effort as he plays all the instruments himself. When asked if he has any special guest artists on the new album, Corgan explained that he brought in Robert Smith of The Cure to help him sing a version of the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody."

    Watch video & hear audio @ artisannewsservice.com.

"No my solo album truly is solo. It's pretty much all me. There's only one guest musician that's Robert Smith from The Cure who's on one song."
Corgan went on to add "I do a cover of a Bee Gees song from the 60's called 'To Love Somebody' and he sings on that with me. It's really beautiful; I'm really excited about it."

With such influential albums from The Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan already to his credit, Corgan isn't the only one excited about his much anticipated solo album, which is slated for a Spring 2005 release.

  • An article from Mexican newspaper "Excelsior" (scans here and here):

  • 3 hours of concert

“The Cure” for a 25 year old curse was found!

Finally the moment had come. Before 18 thousand people, the band which set the messed up hair, black clothes, black eyed makeup and red lipstick trend, would confront the mexican audience who would feel what real glam-goth rock is all about. The cure broke the spell with a 3 hour concert.

Sports palace in mexico city was the venue to listen, last Saturday, to one of the bands who due to schedule problems and fear of flying couldn´t come to “the worlds largest city”, but who now was determined to pay the 25 year old debt with interests live and direct.

Minutes after 8 pm Robert and the band, Simon Gallup (bass), Perry Bamonte (guitar), Jason Cooper (drums) and Roger O´Donell (keyboards) jumped on stage to startoff the concert with “lost” at the same time fans yelled “the cure!..the cure!”. Then a gift by Smith: “Fascination street”, next a classic: “lovesong” followed by “siamese twins”. Fans didn´t expect to finally be cured by the live versions of “lullaby” and “just like heaven”. A great stage and awesome lights couldn´t hide the fact that the band was giving its best to let their mexican fans know there will be The Cure for a while. Then came “the end of the world” sung along by the 18 thousand fans, “inbetween days”, “lovecats” and “before three” couldn´t miss to tonights concert of course. Another guest for the night was “labyrinth” which served as frame for “a forest”. “Push” followed the setlist then “anniversary” was added without leaving behind “the promise” which announced the ending of the concert.

Fans wouldn´t let go of the band that easy, four encores were necessary to perform “why cant i be you” and to finally and sadly say goodbye with “boys dont cry”.

This way The cure kept their promise to give their best on stage by giving away 30 songs and 180 minutes of their time.

  • "I am happy to announce that I won The Cure contest from Ticketmaster. I recieved a box from Ticketmaster in West Hollywood. In the box was The Cure CD deluxe, The Cure double Album and items from the End of the World Video.Starting with the apple, a small pillow from the bed scene

"This weekend austrian radio FM4 played in their morning show a track from RAZORLIGHT and the dj said that "this guitar reminds him of
something: 10.15 Saturday Night by The Cure and that he wanted to play this number but they haven´t got it, so he has to play the wrong number
and he played "Wrong #". Kind of funny to start a day with.

And on sunday evening in "Zimmerservice" they played the COMPLETE 3 Imaginary Boys Album, I think it was vinyl, because you heard some
scratches and the dj said something like that this debut album contains everything The Cure are best at doing it (meant as a compliment)."

I'm going on strike now. No updates for the next 4 years.

Update: Of course I'm not serious! Just expressing my frustration and
disappointment. I'm sure I'll be crossing the picket line later tonight. : )

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve,
and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles.

"It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring
the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt.

"But if the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience
till luck turns and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the
principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are the stake.
Better luck, therefore, to us all; and health, happiness, and friendly salutations to yourself."

  • Curespotting:

  • "I was surfing through the website of Irish rockers Therapy?, when I found a mention of The Cure in the bassist's band diary: apparently, when Therapy? was rehearsing for their new album in June 2004, they were in the same accomodation as The Cure, who were rehearsing for their Curiosa tour in the studio next door...http://www.therapyquestionmark.co.uk/biography/diary/read.php?diaryid=110"

hour with Katie Melua.  I never heard of her before.  But when you scroll down this site  http://www.ndr2.de/musik/radiokonzert/index.html you can see the tracklist and you find a song written by Robert James Smith. The song she played was The Love Cats."

  • Curespotting:

  • "Not really a big deal, but on Sunday during the CBS show Cold Case they played "Just Like Heaven" and "Pictures of You"  while showing  flashbacks to events happening in 1991. Earlier in the show during another flashback they played Depeche Mode's "Policy of Truth", so I kind of had a feeling The Cure were going to be used too."

neices and nephews doing the art work for The Cure album, talked about their long existance in music and then played The Walk. What a great way
    to start my day! "

"Just wanted to say that in 'TV Magazine', a french weekly free tv program given away with many weekend newspapers in the country, there is a small pic of Robert and Simon around brian Molko from Placebo as one of several pics illustrating Canal + (the TV chanel) 20th anniversary evening in Paris where THE CURE played a couple of song.  The show will be shown earlier on NOV 6th 'coded' for those who are suscribers of Canal +, and uncoded (and thus accessible to all) on a repeat on Jan 1st."
