  • Curespotting:
  • "As a side note to that post on good charlotte...I saw them the other night (as a friend of mine is in the opening band)...after the show we all hung out and she mentioned to benji (the other brother) that I wrote and recorded...he asked what sort of stuff so we got talking cause it said it was 180 degrees from pop punk per se...and he asked my influences what I write etc...so we got talking about the cure and other related bands...he is a huge fan of them as well and other related bands...I think many people would be surprised at some of the bands I meet and talk with and who likes which bands...had nothing to do with their music really in most cases...cool though..."

  • "In the Hamburger Morgenpost from 22.11.02, it`s a newspaper in Hamburg, is an artikel about the 65th birthday from Karsten Jahnke. He organize the The Cure concerts in Germany. This artikel includes a picture of Karsten Jahnke with Robert Smith. Under this picture are in big letters some words from Robert Smith: "Dear Karsten, Happy Birthday... it`s been a pleasure, we wish you continued success! Love from The Cure". "

"I've found this on a Wire site.

    http://www.wireviews.com/articles/interviews/colin_newman_aw_02.html

    Influence peddling

As vocalist/guitarist for the angular, art-school Anglos in Wire, Colin Newman helped introduce a tense, dissonant minimalism into the post-punk petri dish. Creative Loafing recently played Newman a series of records that have picked up on the fragmented riff, across four decades, to see if he could identify—and identify with—the many strains of the Wire mutation. He proved surprisingly conversant in new music. "It's my job running a label to know what's going on in music," he says, "so I'm an utter fashion victim."

    The Cure, A Forest (1980)

The Cure is responsible for some of the worst bands that wanted to sound like them. There was one thing that happened—and I'm not saying this as boasting—but I did a tour in the mid-'80s, and the guy who was tour-managing me had toured with the Cure extensively. And when I came off stage on the first night, he walked up to me and said, "Now I know where Robert Smith got it all from."

So that's one of the reasons it makes me queasy—because if the Cure are responsible for a bunch of dreadful bands trying to emulate them, and Wire are responsible for the Cure, then God help Wire. What was kind of weird is that by 1980, there was that first general wave of post-punk bands. And some of them were influenced by Wire, but we weren't interested in why they did that.

More interesting in hindsight are the American hardcore bands influenced by Pink Flag. Bands like Black Flag. And all those D.C. hardcore bands. "

"On UK's Channel 4 Celebrity Big Brother last night (25th), Les Dennis (Boring TV presenter) chose a Cure song to be played. Each contestant had to chose a song to be played to the house, and as his selected song was played he sang along. I was only made aware of this by a colleague, so I do not know which track it was. "

  • Here's an update on the Rock Masters dvd:
  • "The Cure's Rock Masters DVD is going to be a very high standard in picture & sound. The masters were already captured and created directly from the Japanese digital satellite source in 2001.So when making the new dvd master they had to do very little to restore the picture. The sound has been remastered & remixed in dolby digital 5.1."

    (Thanks DJ X)

"Got an interesting piece of mail today at work in relation to the BBC rockmasters thing you had reported on...it is a sampler DVD of each band in the collection...acdc, blondie, the cure, hall and oates, Emmylou harris, billy joel, the kinks, the police, carlos santana, the smiths and thin lizzy...11 in all...this sampler has the cure doing 10:15 circa 1984....image entertainment will apparently be releasing this in the states...this says early 2003...I watched the quick promo screener of the rock masters piece...like 2-3 minutes of the song (10:15)...kinda cool cause it looks old school since video was a whole different beast in 1984...crowd is fairly packed in and animated...the band is circa the early "suits" era of 1984 I believe...porl is in the gray suit hair tied back red Gibson es335 stage...Robert is in the grey suit huge fing hair looking pretty not with it black fender jazzmaster era...thornally is on bass playing simons exact set up you see in orange video...lol looks huge and I question honestly what he does more and more now that I understand music and am older!!...and andy plays the drums...sound was cool...I look forward to a full set...very very well lit in terms of bright stage...nothing like cure shows of the last 15 years in terms of production...very straight and basic...but since they are so close together the interaction is interesting at least.,..so all in all I think cure fans new and old will be very interested in it...I still don't have full track listing yet but will shoot your way when I see the proper dvd...also I just saw on my release schedule "rules of attraction" got assigned a 2/18 dvd release date if anyone interested..."

  • Curespotting:
  • "This month's Rolling Stone (w/Eminem on the cover) has an article with Joel Madden of Good Charlotte. He is asked what his favorite make-out CD is and says, "The best CD for any kind of romantic situation would be The Cure's Galore, the CD with all the good singles. It's good song after good song with that make-out vibe."

    Funny..."

"In the latest edition of Rolling Stone, there is an interview with the lead singer of Good Charlotte, Joel. Turns out, they heavily influenced by the Cure, with Pictures of You being among one of his favorite songs from the past. It's a great article, and I'm really looking forward to more of Good Charlotte. I looked for the article on Rolling Stones site, but couldn't find it. I may scribe it and send it to you tomorrow tho. Here's their site: http://www.goodcharlotte.com/ "

"Another good band Coldplay had this in their biography about their second album, 'A Rush of Blood To The Head' "Although still recognisably Coldplay, this album is louder than the last, more uptempo and energetic. 'There's a lot more fear on the last record, a lot more blatant insecurity, whereas on this one it's more hidden,' says Chris. 'We've grown up a bit, travelled a lot more, met so many people. Musically too, we've heard more: the Bunnymen, The Cure, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, New Order. The last two years, we've been like a cultural sponge. We've sucked it all in and now it's coming out on this record. A lot of it is meant to be about drive and confidence in the face of worry and insecurity.' "

    (Thanks Imagnairyboy1)

    >From a recent AP article:

"Jimmy Eat World guitarist Tom Linton says headlining a show in his hometown was a dream come true. 'I saw my first concert here - it was The Cure,' Linton said an hour before playing at the Mesa Amphitheatre recently in this Phoenix suburb. `I went out there today and I lay out there on the grass and just looked at the stage. I can't describe this feeling. It's craziness.'"

"The bassist of an awesome punk rock band The Distillers mentions bands he has been listening to lately in an interview:

-What bands are you into now, Ryan?

Ryan: I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO A LOT OF INDUSTRIAL LATELY, MORTIIS, NINE INCH NAILS, APOPTYGMA BERZERK, VELVET ACID CHRIST, WUMPSCUT, ASEMBLAGE 23, KMFDM, MARLYN MANSON, JUCIFER, LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, HAUJOBB, PJ HARVEY, RASPUTINA, THE CURE, JOY DIVISION, EMPEROR, THE NEW SLAYER, TORI AMOS, DANZIG...

-What is your favorite band of all time?

    Ryan: THAT'S HARD...GUNS N ROSES, NIRVANA, THE CURE...PICK ONE"

"Has anyone else noticed an instrumental version of Lullaby (or perhaps it's a chunk of the 12'' version) being used to accompany a fashion show featuring the Spring/Summer collection 2003 by the designer Aruna Sii (I think) currently showing on FTV on Sky Satellite. I saw it at about 0425 this morning Sunday…"

"The new issue of Spin has an article on people of the gothic persuasion who visit Disneyland each year (in August?) and one of the things that were listed as things you can do (at, like, 3:45 PM or something) is carry a Cure lunchbox as a purse. The second thing is an article in Regina, Saskatchewan's Leader Post on Jimmy Eat World. They were playing at the Mesa Amphitheatre in Mesa, Arizona and guitarist Tom Linton mentioned that the he saw his first concert there - it was the Cure. Now the Cure lunchbox idea, that is so perfect. And the girl in the Spin article with the black hair is cute!"

    (Thanks Stephen)

"I thought i just had to mention that i was watching BBC1's fame academy last night and they had the aftershow party with radio 1 dj Emma B, who is not the best dj in the world anyway, however, they were talking about people's singing voices who aren't very good, she started reeling of a list of people including Jarvis Cocker from Pulp, Damon Albarn from Blur and ROBERT SMITH FROM THE CURE!!!! can you believe it!! sorry, i wouldn't normally go off about things like this but she really pissed me off, i would understand if she was talking about UNIQUE voices but not good voices, do you think she's heard prayers for rain from Entreat before? i very much doubt it! • Another Cure related dvd release:
  • "Just thought I'd let you know that the Trigger Happy TV Series 2 DVD was released yesterday (Monday, November 18) and this contains the spoof documentary, BEING DOM JOLY, in the special features. It was broadcast last year and if you remember, Robert guest stars as the only person at Dom Joly's wedding. It was broadcast just after Christmas last year, on the BBC.

Trigger Happy TV series 3 is also great (The DVD contains the highlights of the series) and if I remember rightly, A Forest is played as background music for a handful of clips, and featured on the CD sountrack released earlier this year. Also, I remember in series 1 of the show, the song 'A Blues In Drag', an instrumental by The Glove was played. I couldn't believe it! But the Trigger Happy TV series 3 DVD is out now, and I reccomend it"

You can order them at Amazon UK, but they are Region 2 (Europe, Japan, Middle East) and Pal, so make sure you have a region free player if ordering from outside of those areas.

  • Disintegration makes a Top 100 Albums of the 80's chart:
  • "Some music website named PitchForkMedia (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com) has a list of what they call "the 100 top albums of the 80s". The only cure album in this list is Disintegration, in the meager 38th place, between the stone roses and the replacements.

    The description reads:

A titan of an album (clocking in at 70+ minutes with its two cassette/CD bonus tracks), Disintegration outlines every reason The Cure inherited the word "atmospheric" following the demise of Joy Division; though it wants for a single as glorious as "Just Like Heaven", Disintegration stands unquestionably as Robert Smith's magnum opus. The title track is without peer in their catalog, a tyrannical eight-minute epic swirling with formless, distant melodies and sinister, writhing lyrics. "Pictures of You", at 7« minutes, was nicely trimmed and remixed for 1990 radio play, but as with "Fascination Street" (the album's lead single, also heavily edited), the sonorous guitar architecture heard on the album version wins out every time. More than these highlights, Disintegration stands alone for its preamble: scant few albums released in the 1980s can boast an opener as grand as "Plainsong", the most breathtaking, shimmering anthem the band ever recorded. --Chris Ott

  • Just a reminder that Voteworld is still doing the Best Album chart. Disintegration is still number one, but could always use more votes.

  • Curespotting:
  • "This morning on the Belgian radio channel "La Première", the political broadcast was dedicated to the inspection of the ONU in Iraq. Traditionally, the guest speaker choose a song to introduce the interview. This morning, the guest was a famous Bio-physician, counsellor of the department of Defense and former inspector in Iraq between 1991 and 1995, and he chose "close to me"! When the journalist ask him the reasons for this song, he replied that when they were riding in the Iraqi desert at more than 90 mph, they were listening to music and that "close to me" from The Cure reminded him of these unforgettable moments. I found it weird to imagine those brilliant intellectual people listening to the voice of Robert Smith while riding in the middle of nowhere..."

"I was watching the film Empire Records today (released 1995) and was surprised to see a glimpse (and a do mean 'a glimpse') of the Jumping Someone Else's Train filmclip. It was only a fleeting moment, but I would know that footage anywhere."

    (Thanks Jo)

"When The Strokes guest programmed rage they selected boys don't cry as one of their clips. Recently the doves and supergrass have also selected cure songs with one of the two saying that the head on the door period style of songwriting was a big influence on them. Sorry about the info being vague but most of the songs are on at 3am and I can't really retain much info at that hour."

    (Thanks William)

"I personnaly think that there are some links between The Cure and Radiohead, a kind of integrity and creativity so rare in showbusiness. To stress that point of view, here is an excerpt of an article published on the French website "Lesinrocks.com", dealing with the next Radiohead album :

"The new album should be closer to "Ok computer" than the experimentations on the latest albums". Titles like "Go to sleep" or "Wolf from the door" show off the way Ed O'Brien plays the guitar. Anyway the complex atmosphere of "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" is back in some tracks like "Up on the ladder" or "Where I end and you begin", that seems to be promised to a nice future : an intro close to "A Forest" by The Cure is followed up by something more like "Idioteque", but with a more lyrical voice, supported by a high-flying rythm by Phil Selway ... the lyrics of Thom Yorke are still incredibly tortured."

This summer I saw both Radiohead and The Cure in Benicassim. If The Cure made a wondurfull gig, Radiohead had a few technical problems and weren't very into it as they were in Vaison-La-Romaine a year before. Anyway I think it's interesting to listen to "Kid A" or "Amnesiac" and "Seventeen Seconds" or "Faith". The comparison is useless, but I'm convinced that Robert and Thom have good things in common , even if I can't say what."

    (Thanks David)

  • For everyone who has asked, I don't know if the Rock Masters dvd will be released in other regions. I've only seen the region 1 (US & Canada) listed so far. If I find anything else, I'll post it here.

  • Benicassim festival on the radio tomorrow:
  • "The slovak radio station Rock FM is going to broadcast the Cure's concert from Festival Internacional Benicassim 2002 tomorrow at 20.00 CET (19.00 GMT, UK time). I have no more details about the broadcast just that it will happen. The slovak Rock FM radio station should be available through satellite around Europe also. The www.rockfmradio.sk page is under construction at the moment so unfortunetelly I can't get more information.

I will inform you how it went and what was broadcasted after the end."

Update: "Here is how the Benicassim 2002 broadcast on slovak Rock FM radio was:

All songs from Out of This World to Play for Today were broadcasted. A Forest + the second encore was not broadcasted. In addition to fill the nearly two hours of music Pictures of You and Closedown from Entreat were played after the end. The speaker said a few general infos about the group during the intro to Out of This World and from then on it was a clean broadcast without any interruptions. After the end the speaker said that in these days the band is in studio and is starting to record the new album due out next year."

  • That Vex Red story from NME appears to be false:
  • "I found this on the official website of Vex Red:

"Cure those rumours... Just a quick note to all you cats that may have heard or read anything about the band working with the Cure anytime soon... there are no plans in place for this to happen, any press has been misquoted and taken out of context! Maybe next time. Added on : Wednesday, November 13, 2002"

  • And even more Cure/dvd related news:
  • "South Park Season 1 DVD is out (w/ Mecha Streisand) and Warner Bros axed the commentary by Trey and Matt. However, the commentary will be available if you buy the DVD through the comedy central site. They are giving it away in CD form so I suppose you have to sync it with the DVD yourself. There may be some interesting Cure mentions on there."

If you've already purchased the set somewhere else, you can still get the commentary cds. Check Comedy Central for the details.

    (Thanks Craig)

  • NME to do a story on the Trilogy shows (Hell expected to freeze over soon afterwards):
  • "I just wanted to pass this note along. I sent an email to the NME telling them about the Trilogy shows, and they said they’re planning on doing a story about the shows. I like the little note about wishing to have seen Head On The Door added to the set.

    RE: Possible news story

    Hi,

Thanks for getting in touch. Someone else pointed this out to us earlier, and we're planning to do a story on NME.COM about it. Personally I'd like to have also seen Head On The Door recorded too, but it's still a damn fine choice and you can't have everything I suppose!

    Cheers,

  • Curespotting:
  • "Kind of an old curespotting but I thought it was nice. I went to The Strokes concert on Halloween night in San Francisco, CA. Before the show, they were kinda just playing different songs and then... THE WALK came on! I was kinda surprised when I wasn't the only person to jump up all happy. And supposedly the guys in the band are Cure fans. Anyhow, I thought that was neato."

    "Excerpt from MTV:

Nick Carter Talks Backstreet Boys' Future, Tearful New Single, Acting

Though Nick Carter's solo album Now or Never takes a trip down an '80s memory lane, he obviously never paid much mind to the Cure classic "Boys Don't Cry" — the Backstreet Boy's next single, "Do I Have to Cry For You?" insists that laying on the waterworks is nothing to be ashamed of, not even for guys."

  • as noted in the "overheard" section of the new December issue of ALTERNATIVE PRESS:

  • A change to the pre-Berlin fan gathering:
  • "A unified Curedrink make better sense for all of us and the 2pm+ Tempodrom pub "Möckern Stuben" event imho is *the place* - our Hard Rock Cafe suggestion was put forth when no Curedrink had been announced - so we are asking all Berlin Curefans to go to "Möckern Stuben" at the Tempodrom. Anyone who has made reservations at Hard Rock can cancel it or keep it active as potential backup plans for dinner in the event "Möckern Stuben" doesn't serve. As far as I am aware a Hard Rock Cafe reservation carries no obligation. Just so long folks know "Möckern Stuben" is the designated preconcert meeting place on 11.11."

    (Thanks Mark)

  • And an update on the after-Berlin fan gathering:
  • "I have more wonderful news for Cure fans for a post concert gathering on Tuesday November 12th! Read below! I hope all of us in the chainofflowers.com community going to Berlin find a moment to thank Ralf at Duncker and Birgit at K17 for their terrific hospitality in making us Cure fans feel right at home! I can't say enough nice things about the welcome we are getting!

    Hallo Mark !

Good idea, I`ve spoken to my DJs and they`ll make their program suitable to the concert.

Except this all guests with a Cure-concert-ticket will get free entry.

So for me it would be great help if you could post this on the mentioned pages and I`ll inform the people here in Berlin.

Thanks in advance and see you at our place (perhaps already in the Tempodrom)!

    Best wishes

    Birgit/K17"

Update: "I forgot to include K17's location in my alert on the Tuesday postconcert Curedrink. The address appropriately is "Kadiner Str 17". It is near the Franfurter Tor stop on the U in Friedrichshain."

    (Thanks Mark)

  • Curespotting:
  • "on the same site as the one with the upcoming disintegration - nin contest (www.rockstar.it), there is a section called "song of the day", which (rather obviously!) chooses a song every day basing on important dates (mainly album releases). the main thing is that two cure songs are featured. "wciby?" in the 07-07 page and "friday i'm in love" in the 21-04 page. the translations of the two mini-articles, both by Fabio Alcini:

"Why can't I be you?" (07/07/87: "kiss me kiss me kiss me" from the cure is released)

A kiss with many hints and that doesn't contain only love. The 17 songs of this double lp that Robert Smith & mates of the time released just when the 80s began to end, weren't received with only one interpration for sure, neither they weren't born to "combine", but rather to divide on the variety of the material. We begin with the distilled acidity of "The kiss" ("Kiss me kiss me kiss me!/ Your tongue is like poison/So swollen it fills up my mouth) and then we shut up in the shy kindness of "Catch", we start again at full speed with "Torture" but then we find out gloomy urban sadnesses with "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep". And then it goes on with the madness and ambiguity of "Why Can't I Be You?", with the ardent despair of "How Beautiful You Are." (And this is why I hate you/And how I understand/That no-one ever knows or loves another": when we talk about words of hope). But there's also humorous and sometimes sickly happiness, as in "Just like heaven" and "Hot hot hot!!!". The hard-core fans of the "Forest" era began to worry here, but in compensation dozens of new disciples came to push under the Cure stage, who fell in love with the strongs conflicts that the band brought.

"Friday I'm in love" (21/04/92: "Wish" from the cure is released)

There are bands who can only be loved or hated. and there are band that we cannot not love: the Cure are this, sweet, melancholy, childish, complicated, but anyway adorable. "Wish" wasn't the best record off their carrer; it was without any doubt one of the most undervalued. In part because it came right after a masterpiece such as "Disintegration", hard to overcome. And then because it used as presentation a song too much smiley and simple such as "Friday I'm in love", song that the purists couldn't accept, though indeed it was honest pop well played, as it already happened before in Robert Smith's band career. But if we read through the very mood-changing tracks of this cd, we find deep valleys drawn by the guitar, as in "Open", or songs shining and desperate at the same time, as "From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea", or invitations to happiness (!), but with anger, as "Doing the unstuck", or endless ardent melancholies of "Trust". Yes, there is a little bit of happines, the one is "Wendy time". But after all a smile once in a while is a murder to forgive."

  • 2 Cure fan gatherings before Berlin:
  • "I have organized a little Cure Drink before the Show in Berlin (11.11.) go on. The Location is a Pub with the Name "Möckern Stuben". The Pub is direct in the Tempodrom. Beginning is 14.00PM.

    (Thanks Andy)

"With time running short to organize a Berlin preconcert Curedrink, allow me to pass along an unofficial de facto suggestion of Berlin's Hard Rock Cafe. A few of us wearing our Cure t-shirts will be dropping in around 4pm Monday 11/11 for preconcert dinner and drinks. It would be nice to see some other www.chainofflowers.com faithful there as well! :-) HRC is after all a "rock cafe" which also sports a happy hour from 5 - 7pm (4.10 Euro cocktails). Best of all folks can leapfrog potential lines/delays by making advanced reservations over the internet at www.hardrock.com. The Hard Rock Cafe is about 3km from the Tempodrom...with ready public transit."

  • Cure on The Tube compilation cd:
  • "The Cure are featured playing a live version of Lovecats on "The Very Best Of The Tube" released recently. This was a popular music show in the 80s on British TV. Other bands on the album include The Mission, U2, Ultravox and Human League. There's currently an ad running on TV for the album featuring a brief glimpse of Mister Smithster too.... http://uk.music.yahoo.com/021101/242/ddom9.html "

Correction: This version of Lovecats is NOT live, just the studio version.

"Yesterday, as I watched television, one of the question of the famous tv game "who wants to become a millionnaire" on RTL-TVI (belgian tv), the question was : which band sang "should I stay or should I go ?" a) The clash b) Generation X c) I don't remember d) The cure "

"I am currently studying at Bath Spa University College, in Bath, UK. I'm taking the commercial music ("how to be a rockstar") course, which started last year. Anywhoo, this past friday we had a guest lecture from Zorda Marshall, the head of Mushroom Records. He mentioned that he got his start in the music industry playing for the indie-band Zera 1, and that his first experience touring was with the Cure. Of course, I recognized Zera One from stories about the 14 Explicit Moments tour in 10 Imaginary Years. After the lecture I asked him how everyone kept from killing themselves during that tour. He smiled and said "drugs". His coworker, Niki, who was also there, overheard me and we talked about the Cure for a bit. She mentioned that Zorda and she know Chris Parry pretty well, though that haven't spoken recently. I thought it was a cool encounter. Not to mention that Mushroom records has the best mission statement of any record company that I know of, but that's my humble opinion."

  • Curespotting:
  • "On Oct 25th Levon sent in about the Toyota promotional CD being issued with the Australian BRW magazine. It would appear that it is also being issued with the Who Weekly magazine here in Oz.

Also, 96FM (Perth, Western Australia) is currently counting down the Top 500 songs of all time. As this is not my radio station of choice, I am reliant on those around me to let me know when The Cure are played. Inbetween Days has come in at number 323. Fingers crossed there will be more Cure to come."
