  • Two interesting items about Robert's solo album and who will/might be working with him:
  • "I work at a college radio station at Michigan State University, and had the opportunity to do a phone interview with Reeves Gabrels! He was a really cool guy (a bit long winded). When I asked him about what's going on with he and Robert, he told me that the two of them have tentative plans to go into the studio to work on Robert's solo album in late Feburary. Reeves said that Robert has about 5 other musicians in mind that he wants to participate in the project, but Reeves didn't want to tell me who those 5 people were, since it wasn't his project and he wasn't sure. But I asked him if any of these people would be current/ or former members of the Cure, and he said "Yes, I think at least a few of them".

(Thanks to Clay at Impact 89FM)

So who are the others that Robert has in mind? One of them may have been revealed in the Nine Inch Nails chat last night:

Question: Are you planning to work with Robert Smith (The Cure), like producing his solo album?

Trent: Robert and I have met a few times. The Cure has always been one of my favorite bands. When I saw them on their last tour in L.A., we were on tour -- I made a detour just to see the show. We spoke at length about contributing something to his solo record. Hopefully, something will come of that. I have great respect for him.

So there's confirmation that they at least talked about it. Who knows what will come of it, but for now it makes for very interesting speculation. And while we are talking about rumored participants, we might as well mention the others who have been mentioned over the last few months - the 4 other members of The Cure, Boris Williams, David Bowie and Billy Corgan.

    (Thanks Nadine)

  • The Cure's Bloodflowers was nominated for Best Album in the German Alternative Music Awards (GAMA 2000). They were competing with Apoptygma Berzerk, Einsturzende Neubauten and The Deftones. The awards were held in Hamburg, at the Markthalle on the 18th of November and unfortunately, Bloodflowers lost out to Einstürzende Neubauten's Silence is Sexy.

  • A new Cure cover:
  • "I heard on the Finnish radio that the Finnish band called Sad Parade have made a cover version of The Cure's 10.15 Saturday Night. It sounded brilliant when I heard it on a radio; very dancable version with drum'n'bass feeling and vocoder vocals and fine organ sound. I ordered my copy yesterday directly from the label (Plastic Passion). More information www.start.at/plastic "

    (Thanks Sakari)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Over the weekend i heard 2 cure songs on tv programs. While flipping through the stations, I heard the remix version of Lullaby being played on a gymnastics competition during an intermission. Later that day I heard Want during an Ironman competition. Needless to say I was surprised, but happy to hear those songs."

    (Thanks Nige)

"Imagine my surprise to hear "Pictures of You" played whilst waiting for my husband to have a CT scan performed. I don't know if it was the radiologist's sense of humour or just a quirk of fate, but it certainly made the time go a bit faster."

    (Thanks DMW)

"grosse pointe blank, the movie w/ john cusack and minnie driver in it has a lot of good tunes on it, including the clash and the banshees, which are on the actual sound track, but when driver's character reunites with cusack at the radio station where she dj's, she plays in between days in the background while they're very awkwardly trying to make ammends. weird."

    (Thanks Carolyn)

"another Cure-spotting from Germany: I was just selecting a glass of marmelade in a German supermarket in Hamburg (Minimal), when they started to play "Out of this world" as background music. Quite a surprise."

  • The Cure were scheduled to head back to the studio this month to begin work on a new album. We had even heard a start date of last Monday, Nov. 6th. Unfortunately, we have heard from several sources that recording HAS NOT started and in fact has been delayed until next year. We have no other info at this time on what caused the delay or whether this means that Robert will start work on his solo album now.

  • I'm sure we all guessed Reeves would play a part in it, but here's confirmation from Guitar.com :
  • "Meanwhile, Gabrels has been busy in L.A. He played a month-long residency at the Viper Room in June. He's been collaborating with various songwriters including his old Bowie mate Mark Plati and producer Danny Saber. He'll also start working on (Robert) Smith's first solo album in winter or early spring. But foremost are plans for his first national tour as a solo artist. "

    (Thanks James)

  • And what do you know, the DVD of MTV Unplugged - Finest Moments (featuring The Cure doing Just Like Heavan) has finally been released. You can order a copy from Express ($13.99) or Best Buy ($12.99 and free shipping).

    (Thanks Kamar)

"I'm going back to a place called Cairns in Australia this holiday season (my home town). It is quite a big city and there are always heaps and heaps of tourists moving through, and because of this I would like to organise a cure party/indie music night type thing. I can get a club in the city alright, but what I'm going to need is some help with organisation (either physical if you are going to be in Cairns, or ideas from people who have organised them before) and some kind of indication of interest. So if anyone's interested, please email me at ryanpoppi@hotmail.com"

    (Thanks Ryan)

  • Curespotting:
  • "The Smashing Pumpkins played the chords to "Boys don't cry" at their last gig in London on Saturday night. I couldn't see who actually played it because I sat too far away from the stage and it was between the songs so the stage was not very brightly lit. But I guess it was James Iha actually."

    (Thanks Daniel)

    "Sunday 5th of November

On the music quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks on BBC2(UK). Mark Lamarr(the host) asked one of the teams what was the common link between Robert Smith and Divine(Harris Glenn Milstead). Sean Hughes(one of the team's captains) had a comedy programme called Sean's Show which The Cure were on. On this episode Robert was in a skit that had something to do with Robert being Sean's mother and the rest of the band were his aunties. And Divine played Rikki Lake's mother in the movie Hairspray. What a strange link...however they got the answer right."

    (Thanks LuAnne and Andy)

I didn't believe my eyes when I saw a "Robert look alike" standing at the front of his door ready to give out candy. It turned out to be a girl dressing up as Robert. We talked about the Cure while giving out candy, now were friends. I finally found someone in my neighbourhood that is a cure fan (and a curespotting)"

"I was watching the Late Late Show last night and the second guest was this girl who is in that Blair Witch 2 movie. As the interview went on, Craig Kilborne mentioned something about her character being goth, and he proceeds to show her pictures of some people so she could tell him if they were goth or not. First off, Marylin Manson (she said yes), then some other people, then Alice Cooper (she said yes again) and then Robert, then she said that she used to listen to him when in high school and Kilborne said that he did too, and of course she said yes. Then, he proceeds to show her a picture of some NFL player apparently named Robert Smith and he said, how this Robert Smith, he's STILL working...... she said no. I guess it's ok, after all she is in Blair Witch 2 and he had a guest who was on Blair Witch 2, how can they know better."

    (Thanks Enrique)
