    PRESS RELEASE: MAY 1998

"NEWS FROM NOWHERE", a Plan Eleven compilation CD

PLAN ELEVEN is proud to announce the release of "NEWS FROM NOWHERE", a compilation CD of music by artists affiliated with the Toronto-based label. Over a year in the making, "News From Nowhere" is the first release of '98 on Plan Eleven, a collection of new and rare tracks from twelve different artists. The CD provides an overview of the diverse and innovative sounds being released by Plan Eleven, ranging from ambient and electronica to ethereal/bliss pop, experimental, dub, and beyond. Artists featured on "News From Nowhere" include label acts Parade, Wave (an offshoot of Perfume Tree), Ariel, splinter cage, Chromosphere (formerly known as Men In Black), and In Another Life, as well as Roger O'Donnell (keyboardist for The Cure), An April March, Bartok Guitarsplat, Christmas In Glass, Cheshire Cat Smile, and Echo.

"NEWS FROM NOWHERE" TRACK LISTING & INFORMATION

    01. CHROMOSPHERE "Mother Ship" * Chromosphere is the new moniker for the mysterious group formerly known as MEN IN BLACK (M.I.B.). "Mother Ship" is taken from M.I.B.'s debut cassette, "Live Transmission From Charon", released on Plan Eleven in the fall of '96.

    02. ROGER O'DONNELL "This Side" * Roger O'Donnell, best known as the keyboardist for THE CURE, contributes an unreleased solo recording, combining his distinctive impressionistic piano style, atmospheric synth textures, jazz-funk inspired grooves, and drum 'n' bass flavoured beats. Roger has contributed to PARADE's "Frustration" CD, and his debut solo album, "Grey Clouds Red Sky" (1994), was distributed in Canada by Plan Eleven.

    03. WAVE "Seven Dials" * Vancouver ambient dub project Wave (an offshoot of PERFUME TREE) contribute a lengthy, hypnotic new track to the CD. Wave's self-titled debut cassette was released by Plan Eleven in 1995.

    04. ARIEL "The Innocence ("Older" mix)" * Toronto-based dark pop group Ariel are represented with their first new recording since their debut "Withdrawn" CD. "The Innocence" is a whirlwind of layered, overdriven guitars, synthesizer washes, and emotional vocal harmonies, driven by hefty, monumental rhythms. A taste of things to come...

    05. PARADE "Deeper Here" * Veteran Toronto pop deconstructionists Parade release their first new material since reforming in the summer of '97 after a year long break. A new era, a new lineup, a new sound - beautiful in a melancholy way. Recorded with Rob Sanzo at Signal to Noise Studio.

    06. CHRISTMAS IN GLASS "A Day This Long" * Atmospheric, emotional post-pop from this Toronto-area duo, comprised of Chris Galanis and James McIntyre. Christmas in Glass have been described by "Among the Ruins" 'zine as "The sound of corrupted purity." Tragic, romantic, and dreamy - "A Day..." is a masterpiece in under three minutes!

    07. SPLINTER CAGE "cascade shift" * Possibly the best recording yet from this PARADE-related project. A dark industrial-flavoured track bristling with distortion and crashing rhythms, abrasive yet strangely captivating. The soundtrack to a disturbed sleep. Previously unreleased.

    08. CHESHIRE CAT SMILE "Bicycle" * A tumultuous, irresistable pop song that is fed through enough fuzz and distortion to make the Reid brothers (and LOU REED for that matter) proud. A rare track from this Toronto underground sensation, previously released on a limited edition tape.

    09. AN APRIL MARCH "Daylight Falters" * You never know what to expect from dream pop group An April March, and "Daylight Falters" is no exception. This previously unreleased track delves further into the electronica/remix areas explored on the group's "Adagio" mini-album, and strips away the shimmering guitars in favour of grinding sampled rhythms and a foreboding, pulsating industrial bassline. A new, darker twist on the AAM sound.

    10. BARTOK GUITARSPLAT "No Excuses" * Prolific underground guitar manipulator Bartok Guitarsplat is represented by a subtle instrumental piece, which builds from looped noises to a beautiful multi-layered melodic wash. Trippy ambient guitar noise.

    11. ECHO "Reclining In Dub" * Old school dub grooves from this Vancouver-based project. Echo is a product of Noizi Studios, home of TERROR T and NOIZI DUB CREW. Noizi Dub Crew's cassette "Bootsy's 400 Dubs" is available on Plan Eleven.

    12. IN ANOTHER LIFE "Heavenly" * In Another Life debut with this track, an ambient techno anthem comprised of sweeping synths, electronic noise, techno-flavoured beats, and touches of piano and horns. A PARADE side-project with an up-coming limited edition CD/cassette release on Plan Eleven.

  • Well, here they are, the lyrics to "More Than This" (Thanks Cut Here!):

  • For a second of your life
    tell me that it's true
    waiting for a sign
it's all I want of you
    your heart hides a secret
    a promise of what is
    something more than this

Just a second of your time
    any one will do
    a taste of any other
is all I want from you
    offer me the world
    and how can I resist
    something more than this

    Make believe in magic
    make believe in dreams
    make believe impossible
    nothing as it seems
    see,touch,taste,smell,hear
but never know if it's real
    (never know if it's real)

For a second of your life
    tell me if it's true
    anywhere we are
it's all I want of you
    your lips lies a secret
    a promise of a kiss
    of something more than this

Just a second of your time
    anyone will do
    to know any other
is all I want from you
    giving me the world
    now I can't resist
    something more than this

    make believe in magic
    make believe in dreams
    make believe impossible
    nothing as it seems
    never really understand
    what anything means
    what anything means

    another second of my life
    not knowing if it's true
    make believe in nothing
is all I want of you
    whisper me a secret
    whisper me there is (?)
    always something other
    something more than this

The song is 5:11 long and has been described as being "slightly reminiscent of Fear of Ghosts".

  • Some Depeche Mode tribute articles. This one is from JAMtv :
  • Although many "Blasphemous Rumours" have circulated about the project, the "Policy of Truth" is that the final track listing for the Depeche Mode tribute album is now available.

For The Masses is set for an Aug. 4 release on 1500 Records and has been a work-in-progress for nearly two years, according to Gary Richards, co-head of the label and co-producer on the project.

"A couple of years ago, my roommates and I were sitting around one night and thought it'd be a good idea to have some of our friends record Depeche Mode songs," Richards told JAMTV on Thursday. "It just kind of snowballed from there."

The roommates Richards speaks of are Jeff Turzo and David Reilly of God Lives Underwater. (Turzo co-produced the project with Richards.) The duo often played "Stripped" during their live shows, and talked about recording the song. Then the album sprouted.

The first track recorded for the album was "Enjoy The Silence" by Failure. Ken Andrews, singer for the L.A.-based trio, was a friend of Richards and his roommates.

Then, the organizers discovered the Deftones had recorded "Sweetest Perfection," a song from Depeche Mode's 1990 release, Violator. When approached, the Deftones wanted to re-record the song with Terry Date, who produced their two albums, Adrenaline and Around the Fur. However, the Deftones ended up scrapping "Sweetest Perfection" and instead recorded "To Have and to Hold" from 1987's Music For The Masses.

After that, the word got out and bands began swarming to Richards and Turzo. "We never told any band what song they could record," Richards said. "Each band chose their own and if it wasn't already being recorded, they took it."

So who signed on? The Cure ("World In My Eyes"), the Smashing Pumpkins ("Never Let Me Down Again"), God Lives Underwater ("Fly On The Windscreen"), Dishwalla ("Policy Of Truth") and Veruca Salt ("Somebody"), among others.

Although Veruca Salt broke up more than two months ago after co-founder Nina Gordon left to pursue a solo career, Richards said their version of "Somebody" was recorded within the last six weeks. He received it on April 19. "It was the last song to come in," he said.

When asked if this was the last project Gordon and Louise Post collaborated on, Richards said their management told him "yes," but that he thinks it was just Post who cut the track. "I know she really wanted to record the song. I think she's carrying on with the Veruca Salt name."

Richards explained that while many good bands contributed tracks, not all of the songs were used. "We made this album based on the love for music and we got bands that would do the music justice," he said. "Some songs came in from some really cool bands, but they didn't cover the song right and we didn't use them."

While many artists clamored to get a song on the tribute, Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan specifically requested that Marilyn Manson record a track. Unfortunately, the shock rockers are currently working on the follow-up to 1996's Antichrist Superstar and were too busy to record "Personal Jesus," as hoped.

Richards also really wanted Trent Reznor -- who is reportedly a huge Depeche Mode fan -- to contribute a track, but he was too swamped working on the next Nine Inch Nails album. "I don't know what song he would've recorded, but I am sure it would've been incredible," Richards said. The Foo Fighters and Bush also wanted to contribute tracks, but couldn't squeeze the project into their schedules.

Richards admits that although he and Turzo put the album together, he owes all the credit to his inspiration, Depeche Mode songwriter Martin Gore. "Depeche Mode is our Beatles. We put Martin Gore into the same category as John Lennon when it comes to writing songs."

Depeche Mode spokesman Michael Pagnotta told JAMTV that the band is very happy about the tribute and are pleased with the contributing artists' interpretation of their music. (Ari Bendersky)

  • And this one is from MTV :
  • Depeche Mode's Gahan On The Tribute Treatment

After the successful release of "Ultra," its thirteenth album, last year, Depeche Mode is planning to make a full-blown return this year with a European and American tour, a double album retrospective and, to top it all off, the band will receive the tribute treatment.

As we previously reported (see "Deftones, The Cure's Smith To Take On Depeche Mode"), the upcoming Depeche Mode tribute album will feature reworkings of the band's material by such artists as the Smashing Pumpkins, the Cure, the Deftones and God Lives Underwater.

"It's really flattering," commented Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan to MTV News about the tribute album. "It's interesting to hear other people's perspective on our songs and the way that they hear them and the way that musically they record them"

"I particularly like the Smashing Pumpkins version of "Never Let Me Down," Gahan said, "because it's kind of like the opposite of what you'd expect the Pumpkins to do with it. I actually like their version a lot better than ours."

The Depeche Mode tribute album is scheduled to arrive in stores in August, while (see "Depeche Mode Talks Tour, Will Visit The U.S. ...") the band plans to launch its first American tour in five years this October to coincide with the release of the greatest hits set.

  • Another XFM article, this one is from Chart Attack :
  • LONDON'S ALTERNATIVE RADIO BOUGHT BY ALL-HITS CAPITAL

Xfm, London, England's alternative radio station, has been bought by Capital Radio, the major commercial outlet that competes with the BBC. Capital now owns 90.1% of the station, for which it paid 15.9 million pounds (about $36 million Canadian), and Xfm co-founder Chris Parry retains the remaining 9.9%. Xfm have been on the air officially since September 1997, after a seven year battle to secure a broadcasting license, but was recently blasted by record label executives for being "too alternative". They posted a 1.7 million pound loss last year, and captured less than 1% of the total listening hours in London, despite many artists dedicating time and money to getting it off the ground. Parry, who also manages The Cure (and therefore doesn't need much money these days), said "I'm delighted that with the backing of Capital Radio, we will be able to build on our achievements, and fulfil Xfm's potential." There are no plans to change the station's format, but these things have been known to happen overnight with very little warning (hello, Spirit Of Radio!).

  • Some not entirely unexpected news from JAMtv :
  • The Cure will head back into the studio this September.

The leaders of the '80s goth movement have already written a handful of songs and will enter a London recording studio in early fall to begin laying down new tracks, a spokesman for the Cure told JAMTV on Tuesday. "Some of the music has been worked on since last fall," he said. "But it's up to Robert [Smith] to determine if it's ready or not." Although Smith is the band's main lyricist, the other members do contribute to the musical arrangement.

In addition to a new album, the Cure have contributed original songs to two upcoming compilation albums. They recorded "World In My Eyes" for the forthcoming Depeche Mode tribute -- For The Masses -- which has a tentative release date of Aug. 4. They also cut a new song called "More Than This" (an original, not a cover of the Roxy Music song) for the X Files soundtrack, which should hit stores on June 2.

The Cure also has been asked to submit a track for the soundtrack to Orgazmo -- a movie written by "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker that's been described as a "Spinal Tap-ish porno film." However, a spokesman for the Cure told us the band hasn't decided whether to sign on to the project.

In related news, the Cure are scheduled to hit a number of European music festivals this summer, including Blindman's Ball in Stuttgart, Germany, on July 17; Bizarre Festival in Cologne, Germany, on Aug. 22; and the Sun Festival in Brno, Czech Republic, on Aug. 23. (Ari Bendersky)

  • Some more XFM news from NME :
  • LONDON'S ALTERNATIVE XFM STATION SNATCHED UP BY CAPITAL BIG BOYS

XFM, London's alternative FM radio station, has been bought by the commercial major Capital Radio.

Under the terms of the acquisition - announced on Friday morning (May 1) - Capital have entered into an agreement to acquire 90.1 per cent of Xfm subject to Radio Authority clearance. Capital paid '15.9 million for Xfm which had liabilities of '0.5 million and recorded a '1.7million loss at the end of last year.

The station began broadcasting last September, providing London's only 24-hour alternative music station. Xfm co-founder Chris Parry, who also manages The Cure, retains a 9.9 per cent shareholding in Xfm.

Parry's statement, issued on Friday, says: "I'm delighted that with the backing of Capital Radio, we will be able to build on our achievements, and fulfil Xfm's potential." Xfm will move from its present offices in Charlotte Street to Capital's Leicester Square HQ once the sale goes through.

Xfm was blasted by record company bosses for being "too alternative" in its programming policies at the recent Radio Academy '98 conference in London. In the first quarter of this year, the station achieved a share of 0.6% of total listening hours in London.

  • Some XFM news from Dotmusic :
  • PARRY TO STAY ON BOARD AS CAPITAL BUYS XFM FOR £16m

Capital Radio is to acquire Xfm in a deal which values the London-based alternative rock station at £15.9m. The agreement was struck last Friday morning following an all-night session between Capital Radio and Xfm shareholders.

It will now go forward for Radio Authority and OFT approval. Capital Radio was deeply disappointed at losing out to Chris Evans on the takeover of Virgin Radio last December, a move that would have given it a national radio station and automatic entry into digital radio. The Xfm deal will take its presence in London to two FM licences and one AM licence. Richard Park, director of programmes at Capital Radio, is confident the deal will not face any regulatory problems and is hopeful it will get the green light within three months

Latest Rajar figures give Xfm, which launched last September, a 0.6% share of total listening hours in London, down from 0.7% in Q4 of 1997. "We want to double that in a year," says Park. "Capital is a business that believes in marketing its stations. I don't think Xfm has been properly introduced to the market." The deal would see Capital taking a 90.1% stake in Xfm, with Xfm MD Chris Parry retaining his 9.9% share and staying on as a director. It also includes the assumption of net debt outstanding at completion of an estimated £1.9m.

After taking start-up costs into account, Xfm had net liabilities of £0.5m and recorded a £1.7m loss for the year ended December 1997. Parry is confident the deal will help Xfm to grow. "A number of shareholders were looking to exit. It was a case of working out what was best for them and what was best for taking Xfm forward," he says. Parry stressed that Xfm would not become "the son" of Capital, adding the two stations serve different audiences, a point also made by Park. "No changes to the music policy are envisaged at this moment," says Park.

Your guess is as good as ours, but do you remember last year when The Cure's Robert Smith took a phone call on a cell, right onstage at the Universal Amphitheater, then quickly finished the concert and was immediately whisked to the airport?
