DALLAS - Rock 'n' roll increasingly deals in
manufactured excitement and emotions - so it was with some surprise
that, as the Cure ended its long set Thursday
night at Starplex, I found myself feeling genuine sadness.
Robert Smith has all but guaranteed that the
band's current world tour will be its last; numerous songs on their
latest CD, Bloodflowers, deal with final partings,
time running out, and the like.
And the 25-song, 165-minute show, which drew
around 12,000 people, many in full Goth gear and thick makeup
despite the muggy heat, was basically a goodbyeletter.
Eschewing many of his hits, Smith instead emphasized
four CDs -Bloodflowers, 1982's Pornography, 1989's
Disintegration and 1992's Wish, and some of
their bleaker songs.
And from them, he drew some of his bleakest
material, much of it concerned with endings, partings and finality:
One Hundred Years, End, Disintegration, Siamese
Twins and the new. The final two songs before the encores were
the final two songs on Bloodflowers, 39 and
the title track, whichmake plain that Smith is bringing the band to a
conclusion.
Smith is clearly summing up, offering an overall
perspective - nothing lasts forever, and the future is inevitably
bleak - rather than simply an evening of music.
But the evening's strength was not simply its thematic grounding.
Rather, Smith and band (bassist Simon Gallup,
guitarist Perry Bamonte, drummer Jason Cooper and keyboardist
Roger O'Donnell) played with an impressive
forcefulness. The sound mixwas excellent, and Smith sang with
purpose and clarity, giving these songs thereadings
they deserved.
Coupled with this was the band's beautiful,
subtle staging: Each song had its own visual signature, many of them
striking: A Japanese flag for the new Watching
Me Fall and black and white photos of World War II carnage
accompanied One Hundred Years.
After the 16-song set, the band didnearly an
hour of encores, mixing hits such as Lovesong and Just Like Heaven
with career-defining material such as Disintegration,
Cold and Pornography. A hypnotic version of A Forest was
followed by the band returning to the stage
a fourth time for one final song, Faith. It was an appropriate, touching
farewell, one that, like the entire show,
will linger long in the memory.

Just about every time the Cure goes on tour,
the same old rumors follow. Its stop at Starplex on Thursday was no
different. You could plunk yourself down practically
anywhere in the crowd of more than 16,000 and overhear the
same conversation.
"Did you hear? This is their last tour?"
"Yup. Probably the last time they'll play in Dallas."
Were it another band - Black Sabbath comes
to mind -the rumors might seem contrived, a sneaky way to raise
attendance. But this English mood-rock band,
led by singer-guitarist Robert Smith, is not one for playing games. If
Mr. Smith is considering calling it quits,
you can be sure that it is genuine.
Either way, the rumors play into and reflect
the band's essential elusiveness. One of the Cure's basic shades is its
sense of fragility and loss, of slipping out
of your fingers before you can really catch hold. Mr. Smith's persona
epitomizes uncertainty; that he can never
quite commit is part of why people like and want him so badly.
He and the band - including longtime bassist
Simon Gallup and new drummer Jason Cooper, plus Roger O'Donnell
and Perry Bamonte - are on their second leg
of a tour that is ostensibly promoting their new disc, Bloodflowers.
They did lovely versions of the title track
and the single "Maybe Someday"; but a large portion of the three-hour
set came from earlier releases, especially
their '89 disc, Disintegration, and 1992's Wish.
From the sleepy opening song, "Out of This
World," and on through "Want" and "Fascination Street," the show
had a leisurely don't-rush-me feel that came
off like an anti-rock-concert. Anyone looking for quick cheap thrills
wasn't going to be satisfied. This was about
going for the long haul, submitting to the inexorable, and finally about
capitulation.
This also was that rare show where lawn tickets
were probably just as good as the front row. Though the set had its
share of rockers ("From the Edge of the Deep
Green Sea" was particularly tantalizing), the music's dreaminess -
not to mention the band's undemonstrative
performing style - made it an ideal soundtrack for settling back onto the
grassy hill.
Effects, limited to lights and some low-key
projections, were secondary to the performance, although they played a
neat role in the song "Sinking." An image
of Mr. Smith performing was superimposed over a background of
murky red clouds; as he moved forward and
back, the camera trained on his face created a distorted, fish-eye
view. His image became part of the red murk.
Amphitheater concerts are never about intimacy,
but Mr. Smith rejected that notion. At show's end, before
the first encore, as the band walked offstage,
he stopped in his tracks and looked wistfully at the crowd. Just being
there was enough.
I live in Houston and while the Woodlands show
was good, Dallas was even better. The highlight of these shows
are how the images on the backdrop sort of
explained the songs. I especially liked that "pondering angel" shown
during Siamese Twins. Siamese Twins,
Cold and Pornography were not played at the Woodlands. So this was
a
special treat for me. I will spend big
$$$ on any videoes that get released from this tour. My only regret
is Robert
James Smith never performs "To The Sky" live,
the song that opened my eyes to the CURE.
After the concert and as I waited for the parking
lot to clear, while in my rented white Ford Mustang convertible I
blasted "To The Sky" off the Stranger 'N'
Fiction CD through the Mach 3 speakers. This girl (a "stranger" I
never met before) came over and made a request
of me I couldn't fill. If you reading this review are that person
and can tell me what the request was, e-mail
me at poesure@yahoo.com.
This was my 4th cure concert and the first
one for my wife. 8 years have passed since my last one on Monterrey
Mexico. As I saw the Dreamtour schedule,
Mexico was not included. So, I told my wife ¡¡We are going
there!!!
we choose Dallas because we have a friend
who lives there, so we saved a lot of bucks on hotel and car rental.
We took the plane Mexico City-Dallas Wed May
24 very early, 8 in the morning, 2 hour flight, we arrived and
wow!!! hot weather.
The big day!!! We picked up the girl who sold
me the tickets, Molly.Tubbs and her husband at their hotel (they
drove all over from Lubbck)
As we arrived the Starplex I was very nervous!!!
we entered and instanly run for a huge coke, looked the shirts
booth and then went to our seats wich they
were like 10 seats away from the left side of the soundboard, I
approached the soundboard and saw the setlist
but I quickly turned my head over, I wanted the setlist to be a
surprise.
As we waited for the concert to beging I was
enjoying my huge Coke, ahh the best one of the best ones of my lfe;
for me was extremely hot!! people started
to fill the lawn area, ans also the resreved seats
The intro started, it reminded me the Platoon
movie helicopter sequence ;-) as its also played in there. The band
came out, the crowd cheered and Out Of This
World stared, wow!!
I really liked the sound on the starplex,
crisp and powerful, great light show, the slides behind each
song, the songs played etc...
The band itself was like always; a guitar
concentrated Robert, a calm Roger, a "torso mover" Perry, a serious
faced Jason and a jumping, Simon.
1st encore:
Plainsong and Disintegration; ahhhh It was
a nice flashback for me since my first cure concert was there 11 years
ago on the Prayer Tour, the crowd was very
happy on plainsong as you heard screams, yeahs!! and other bursts of
exitement, the first part of plainsong there
was no Robert walkin thru the left side of the stage only the rest
of
the band
Second encore
Cold, Siamese Twins, Pornography I never
tought I was ever going to hear Pornography live!! wow!!! sounded
pretty good!! also siamese twins was a surprise
since its one of my favourites. I noticed that Roger dissapeared for
a few moments during Siamese Twins, Cold
another one of my favourites.
3rd encore:
Lovesong, Just Like Heaven, A Forest. Ok,
time for 2 radio singles the crowd got excited when lovesong was
played, but whin Just Like Heaven every one
got berserk On a Forest, the show returned back to the deep
atmosphere.
4th Encore:
Just as A forest finished I tought: Thats
it!! ahhh what a beautiful experience, but no!!! the band returned
to play
Faith. !!! wow!!! what an ending!!!
I was very happy and pleased, and also completly
soaked with sweat, I ran to the shirts booth and got everything!!
exept one shirt wich was sold out. We returned
to get some sleep and stayed the weekend in Dallas, returned
on Sunday May 29 to Mexico City
We will never forget this experience!!It was
a complete different experience compared to Mexico concerts.
As the rumors for South America surfaced we
hope Mexico to be included.
A friend of mine and me decided to go up to
USA to the concert. I have relatives in Dallas and they got me lawn
tickets for the concert!!! I was really excited.
Since we had a low budget for the trip and our economy is very weak
we had to go on bus!!! We went from Mexico
City all the way up to Dallas just for the pleasure of getting to see
Robert and The Cure live. We took bus from
Mexico City to Laredo (in Mexico) that was 16 hours. Then we
walked through the border and got on another
bus from Laredo, TX to Dallas (9 hours more or less). But it really
worth it!! I did not went to the previous
concert in Monterrey and I really thought that this would be the last chance
I would ever get to watch them live.
The trip was very long and we were tired when
we finally arrived to Amplex. We managed ourselves to get tickets
on the front (we got them on the right section
of the amphitheathre)... when the concert began everything became
joy for both of us. I laughed, cried, jumped...I
was mesmerized when finally Robert approached our side of the
amphitheathre (I was like 1 meter from him!!!)...it
was just wonderful to be there. I really hope they won´t call
it quits...they are the best!!! If I had to
travel again to get to a cure concert...I would not hesitate!!!
Anyway, thank you for all the help your page
provided regarding the dates, tickets, times, etc. I am really
disconected from my reality...I would love
to get to be in all the other concerts that are yet to come.
Well, I made it back home to Waco from Houston
with enough time to take a little nap before driving to Dallas. I
picked up my friend after he got off work
and we were on our way. He is a radio fan unfortunately and I told
him to
expect older songs than he is used to.
He had a good time, but wanted to hear more things off of KM,KM,KM and
more singles.
We got pretty much the same setlist as in Houston.
I had crappy seats and was only one of 5 people standing
in my section. I danced and sang to
every song and pissed some people off who wanted me to sit down.
The crowd went wild for Fascination Street
and MaybeSomeday. Shake Dog Shake sounded great again. There
was some guy in front of me holding up a cell
phone during FTEOTDGS for someone not able to go to the show
I suppose. Sinking sounded better than
it has so far.
I was surprised they only played 2 songs for
the first encore. My voice was shot by the time they finished
Disintegration. I hope I wasn't annoying
anybody with my singing. I like to sing along.
The Pornography encore was extremely good.
A lot more people were singing along than I thought would. Cold
used to be one of my favorites off this cd,
but Siamese Twins has taken its place. I can't get enough of this
song
now.
Once again, the radio fans got what they were
waiting for - the singles. The whole place was jumping. There was
10 minutes left after A Forest was finished.
What will they play now?, I thought.
They came back for a 4th encore. I couldn't
believe it. I think they like Dallas more than I thought they did.
They
played Forever in Dallas during the Swing
Tour and then the Promo Show in February. It was my third night
in a
row to hear Faith. Don't get me wrong,
I like this song. But, I would have preferred to hear something new.
They
could have thrown in Wrong Number or Like
Cockatoos.
Anyway, now "I know we have to go back I realize.
We only get to stay so long. We always have to go back
to our real lives." I wish I could continue
on the road with everyone. I enjoyed meeting all the people from
Europe
and the people from everywhere else. Thank
you for this website Craig and Nadine. It has been a big help in
planning my trips to the shows.
Well...this was my first cure concert, and
I'm shattered that it could be the last. Now as I write this I am
still trying
to adapt to the mundane world, it really seems
that I just woke up from my most wonderful dream. I was there with
four other friends of mine ( i got them into
the cure), and they agreed taht the show was amazing, even though they
weren't as much into the cure as I am.
I don't have time to write reviews for all the songs, so I'll put in the highlights.
Loudest Sound: my friends and I agreed that
this was a very emotional song. It caught me completely off guard
and I was almost crying.
100 years: I felt RAGE...it was incredible
and majestic
Disintegration: I screamed the lyrics...with
agony and euphoria
Edge of the Deep green Sea: see disintegration...
Pornography Encore: oblivion was never so
sweet and agressive at the same time
Fascination Street: Sexy
the Rest of the set: Perfect
I hope i see them one more time, but I recommend
that you get tickets NOW...this show is a true experience on so
many levels, emotionally, musically, and visually,
robert is giving it everything he has...let us appreciate it...
If I never see the Cure play again live, I
will at least remember the band going out on top with Bloodflowers and
the Dream Tour. I was almost reluctant to
go to this show, thinking that it could never live up to all the memories
and the huge part which the Cure has played
in my life the last 15 years. The first hour of the show was good,
but it
felt like the connection between band and
crowd was not really strong. The crowd seemed to want to dance
frantically to every song, however inappropriate,
even slow songs such as Prayers for Rain and The Loudest
Sound. But when they played Maybe Someday
followed by Shake Dog Shake, the show took a turn, the band and
crowd really connected, and this became one
of the more memorable Cure shows I have ever seen.
By the time the main set closed with the song
Bloodflowers, the crowd was totally entranced. It was very eerie,
actually. Everyone was completed focused
on the mood and the music the band created. This may sound silly, but
that song (Bloodflowers) and the crowd's rapt
response to it almost made me cry.
From there, the show just got better and better.
Out of nine Cure concerts I have attended, this is the only time I
have ever heard Sinking, Faith, or Siamese
Twins, all of which were major highlights.
It would have been nice to hear more new songs
like The Last Day of Summer, Where the Birds Always Sing, or
There is No If. But I can't really complain
about the setlist.
When A Forest ended and the band did not continue
into Forever (like they did here in '96), I started to feel like
the show was incomplete. It had to be
the end of the show, because no band I have ever seen (Cure or otherwise)
has ever come out to play a fourth encore.
Was I ever wrong. They did come out again, to play Faith. It
was
absolutely incredible. How many people
in the audience at that moment were thinking "this is the best band
EVER, this is a moment I am going to remember
for the rest of my life"? More than just a few of us...
During WMS and the Swing Tour, I had a definite
feeling that the band would do one more album and tour, then
probably call it quits. Now, I feel even more
strongly that Bloodflowers and the Dream Tour are the Cure's finale.
Make sure you catch this incredible band,
on their final, incredible tour.
Well, I made it back home to Waco from Houston

Thank you for this website Craig and Nadine. It has been a big

This is definetly the greatest tour to ever
see. I have seen The Cure 7 times now. Started in 1992 and nothing can
compare to this tour. I have never been so
filled with emotion. Or Have I ever seen Robert filled with so much
emotion. The highlight of my night.
Meeting Robert again. I used my photo pass to get to shoot the band back
stage. I told him how much a freind of mine
really enjoys Just like Heaven. He asked me If I would like him to
dedicate it to her. I said she wasnt there
and that she would be at the detroit show. So maybe he will do it
there.
The show was amazing. My
highlights were the entire encore. Although as great as a song it is. Just
Like
Heaven totally threw off the set. All three
sets of the encore. Were just amazing. To hear Cold Siamese Twins
and Pornography live. All in a row. YOu cant
even imagine. Robert Definetly had some sort of feeling or strong
thought during Cold. But...
During Siamese twins It was absolutely wonderful.
To see all that emotion running through him. Its like you can
feel it.
Disentegration however was definetly
the one that took the cake for me tonight. I am absolutely crazy whenever
that song is played live in front of me. I
burst into tears and my heart begins to ache. Never have I heard this song
played with such force. Such drive. It was
absolutely amazing. If I had only heard that one song tonight. I would
still
be telling people... Go and see this tour.
Drop everything now and get tickets to the concert being played nearest
you. i traveled all the way from Michigan
for that show and it was well worth every penny and mile. Go. If
its the last thing you do in life. You will
die happy.
What you have heard and read is all true!
It is a truly gratifying and emotionally satisfying show! North Texas
-
we kick ass! We got 4 encores!
Four!! Although the total set still seemed lighter than the European
shows. Any
chance the Heatwave in the Deep South is taking
its toll ? The only disappointment I had at the Dallas show was
the omission of Trust and Play for Today -
however the inclusion of Lovesong, was worth the trade off (in my
humble opinion.)
Every song was played with all the energy and
emotion the boys could generate. Watching me Fall was fabulous!
It's not the same as listening to it in the
car or at home....you will gain a better appreciation for this song!
Disintegration was well...{sigh} I have no
words to describe it. You will be transported to the very first moment
you fell in love with this song!
and Lovesong....ok, ok, I know you diehards
are grimacing at the inclusion of a pop single. But this song blended
the wonderfully diverse crowd into one big
family. It was the one moment in the concert when all us obscure
album
lovers sang and danced with the radio crowd!
and Just Like Heavan produced the loudest participation of the night!
Have a great time folks, sing your lungs dry and dance shamelessly !
Thank you Robert and company, it has been an absolutely mesmerizing ride.
I first saw The Cure during the "Head on the
Door" tour, back in 1984 at a very small performance hall at Smith
College in Northampton Massachusetts, and
became a huge fan, there's nothing like experiencing The Cure live
and last night was no exception.
The band sounded great and very tight. The
crowd was friendly, the energy was very high and The Cure looked
like they were enjoying themselves, especially
Simon. They stayed away from most of their pop hits and played
many of their longer darker songs which allowed
them to stretch out & jam. It was great to hear "Open", "Shake
Dog Shake", "End", "Sinking" & "Prayers
for Rain".
They used a cool video effect on "Sinking",
they had a fish eye camera looking at Robert's face from the end of
his microphone and showed the video feed on
the backdrop mixed in with a nice atmospheric background. It was a
great when he closed in on the microphone
to sing, the camera distorted his face a bit and it looked quite dramatic.
The background "slide show" throughout the
concert was nice, simple & elegant w/some video mixed in every now
& then.
The guitar work was exceptional, loud &
hard for most of the show, with Perry taking most of the leads. Robert
must have been having a good time to do 4
encores!!! A great deal of people in my section left during the 3 song
encore set from Pornography, too dark for
most folks who only know/like them for their pop stuff. This was
especially evident during the 3rd encore set
when this clueless person in front of me exuded hysterically that
"Lovesong" was her favorite Cure song (probably
the only one she could name) and jumped around spastically
for the entire song w/her girlfriend while
their escorts, looking miserable, just wanted to leave. The final encore
of
"Faith" was really moving, with Robert repeating
the last line several times and the band fading out behind him.
One of the cool things Robert did was every
time the band left the stage, he lingered, hands clasped in a prayer
position, looking lovingly out on the crowd,
long after the rest of the band had departed, made me wonder if this
is really the last Cure concert tour like
Robert's been claiming. I hope this doesn't come to fruition, I think they've
got a great deal more fantastic music to make.
If you've been debating whether to see The Cure on this tour, don't
hesitate, this may be your last chance and
they're hot!
I got to the Starplex pretty early, and it
was definitely worth it. While watching Captain Audio (the second
stage
band), I looked to my left and noticed Roger
and Perry watching them too! Only a few of us noticed them,
and we didn't mob them, as they were obviously
trying to remain incognito. Roger was videotaping Captain Audio.
It was really quite funny, because he would
get a very irritated look on his face whenever anyone would
unknowingly walk in front of his camera.
They soon made a quick exit. A little while later, Simon came out
and
got MOBBED. I guess he can't hide very
well. The funny thing was that it was only AFTER everyone mobbed
Simon that they realized that Perry had actually
been standing by the second stage for quite some time. No one
noticed him until Simon went and stood by
him. I felt bad for them, because they were obviously trying to
watch Captain Audio, and no one would leave
them alone!
Anyway, on to the show...Others may disagree,
but I felt that the Dallas audience was quite a bit more enthusiastic
than the Houston crowd, at least at first.
That was encouraging. However, by the end of the main set, they were
just as dead as the Houston crowd.
I hate to complain about such a wonderful show,
but I was a bit disappointed that the main set was EXACTLY the
same as in Houston. It was interesting
to hear how the performances compared, though. End, Deep Green Sea,
and Prayers for Rain didn't come off nearly
as well in Dallas, although Sinking, The Loudest Sound, Shake Dog
Shake, Fascination Street, and 39 were all
BETTER in Dallas.
As an interesting sidenote about End, Robert
sang "I was none of those things" in Houston, but reverted back to
present tense in Dallas.
Unfortunately, unlike the Houston show, the
audience didn't really get into the first encores. Plainsong was
a bit
shaky at the beginning. Robert didn't come
onstage until midway through the intro, which obviously confused
Simon, who just stood onstage not knowing
what was going on. It ended up ok, but it certainly wasn't a very
memorable performance of Plainsong, as it
was in Houston. Disintegration also wasn't quite as strong in Dallas.
Oddly enough, the audience seemed more receptive
to the Pornography encores (I'll get back to those in a
moment...). Needless to say, Lovesong,
JLH, and A Forest brought the house down. And Faith...well, I'll
get back
to that one in a moment, too...
Highlights:
Sinking--If Sinking in Houston was great,
Sinking in Dallas was INCREDIBLE. It was so perfect...
Shake Dog Shake--Definitely the best performance of this that I've ever heard. Fantastic!
Fascination Street--I know this is probably
confusing a lot of you, but let me explain. Every time I've seen
the
Cure, Fascination Street has NEVER come out
quite right. Either the sound was messed up, or it didn't
have quite enough energy, or something.
This was the first time I'd ever heard Fascination Street sound as great
as I knew it could sound.
Cold - Siamese Twins - Pornography--WOW!!!!!!
Never in my wildest dreams!!! When they came back for the
second encore (after the disappointing first
encore), the first thing I noticed was that all five of them came back,
so
I knew they wouldn't play All Cats Are Grey
(which I still WANT TO HEAR!!!). I was TOTALLY expecting either
M, Lovesong, or Boys Don't Cry. I was
so convinced of this that it actually took me a few seconds to recognize
Cold when they started it up. Once I
realized what they were playing, I swear my jaw must have hit the ground!
Cold is one of my favorite Cure songs, and
Robert sang it so perfectly!!! Siamese Twins was absolutely
GORGEOUS. It chilled me; SO beautiful!
The red lights gave the song exactly the atmosphere it needed.
Pornography totally blew me away.
It was so powerful and so chilling. Robert continually repeated "It's
too
late!", and it gave me chills (notice a trend?
LOTS of chills!). These three songs were probably the ONLY time in
either the Houston or Dallas shows where I
completely forgot the rest of the audience, the rest of the world.
The
music was so captivating and powerful.
Faith--AGAIN! I couldn't bring myself
to believe that I would ever hear Pornography and Faith in the same show,
so, when they came back on for a fourth encore
(!!!) and Robert said, "We have time for one more song before
they pull the plug on us," I actually thought
that they were going to play Friday I'm In Love. They played it in
the
soundcheck, and the pop songs of the third
encore went over so well with most of the audience that I thought that
it
HAD to be Friday. Well, if I had too
little faith, the Cure certainly gave it to me! I was stunned when
they started
playing Faith for the second night in a row.
This time was even better than Houston, and I think I reached the
same level of detachment from the audience
that I reached during Pornography. Truly a wonderful experience!
That show left me even MORE impressed with
the Cure than the Houston show did. This was their fourth show in
as many nights, and they still gave us FOUR
ENCORES!!! And, even though they had already pleased the real
fans with the songs from Pornography, they
STILL returned to Faith after pleasing the rest of the crowd with
Lovesong and Just Like Heaven.
I can't wait for St. Louis and Chicago (especially
since they're a hell of a lot closer to me than Texas!!!).
Hopefully, they'll bring out more of the Kiss
Me stuff; I was really hoping to hear The Kiss. In any case, any
show on this tour promises to be fantastic!
See as many as you can!!!
I managed to get seats on the second row, so
I was really looking forward to the show. I was however, sceptical
that the band might be tired because this
was the fourth consecutive night that they would be playing. And
it did
seem through the initial set that they were
just going through the motions. But, after the main set, the security
let
everyone rush up to the front of the stage
where I was , and it was Deep Ellum all over again for the encores.
Everyone was crowding and being very loud.
Even though it was a very hot and humid night, it seemed to give the
band a second burst of energy. The encores
were fantasic. We heard Cold, Siamese Twins, Pornography, and
Faith.
And of course everyone was into the singles:
Lovesong, Just Like Heaven and A Forest. I was dissappointed
that we didnt get to hear a couple of songs
that I had read that they have been playing, such as The Kiss and
Pictures of You, but over all it was a great
show. I went to the concert with several friends that love the Cure
as
much as I do. The powerful and emotional
music caused tears to fall and bonds to be made. I can only hope
that
the fire really isn't almost out ....
