  • Spoiler Warning! If you don't want to know about the Trilogy "easter eggs" and how to find them, stop reading now. Ok, here's how to get to them:
  • On Disc 1

Go to the Disintegration set menu, highlight Plainsong, and click to the left. Click on that and see a split screen version of Plainsong from both nights, shot by Robert's handheld camera.

Still on the Disintegration set menu, highlight Same Deep Water As You, and click to the left. Click on that and watch Same Deep Water As You from the "Robertcam" (much like the Sinkingcam on the Dream Tour).

    On Disc 2

Go to the Interview menu, highlight End Of An Era?, and click to the left. Click on that and you get some outtakes from the interviews.

  • Tower starts shipping Trilogy:
  • "After reading all the comments about Virgin or HMV already selling the DVD, I immediately sent a note to Tower Records (USA) and I got a note from them stating that my order was shipped today!

Despite that in their website still appears "June 3rd" as the release date, they are shipping it."

    (Thanks Alfredo)

  • More store reports:
  • "Today I got my "TRILOGY"- copy from a small recordshop in germany! I can´t tell you the name here, because they are really in fear about Eagle Vision´s reaction. It is also in stock at the big stores like "Mediamarkt", but they won´t sell it before monday... So if you are from germany and want to see the DVD even today, visit your nice, little recorddealer next door! (Always better...)"

    (Thanks Stefan)

"HMV in Cork, Ireland are not ordering the Trilogy DVD at all!! The girl on the phone told me that every other Cure title has been deleted! Virgin Megastore have it coming in on Monday though."

    (Thanks Paul J.)

"I can definetely tell everybody in Germany that the DVD is in on sale on time Monday . They already have the Trilogy dvd (also in Spain...), they did already sell some . The price is 23,99 EURO

It 's also available in Belgium ( 28 EURO, i don`t know why) and in some stores in London.

For Germany, i am absolutely sure."

    (Thanks Jim)

  • DVD Empire claims that Trilogy has been pushed back to June 10th:
  • "We have just been informed by the studio that the release date for 'Cure, The: Trilogy' has been changed to 6-10-2003.

Your order has been kept in place and will be processed normally. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

    Sincerely,

    Information <info@dvdempire.com>

Customer Service DVD Empire - www.dvdempire.com"

This is obviously a mistake, since Laser's Edge has already shipped out copies (just got my copy from them a few minutes ago), or maybe it only applies to them, I don't know. Anyone else heard about a delay?

Update: I just had another report, saying that HMV Canada now lists it for June 10th as well. So it seems that as of right now, the only place in North America that has it in stock is Laser's Edge, who just got another shipment of the Trilogy discs in today. And don't forget, they also have a retail store in Carmel, Indiana (directions here). If you ask about it discreetly, you can probably get a copy there. Might be worth a road trip tonight or tomorrow. : )

  • We first started talking about this last year, and it really seemed like a longshot, but now... :
  • "The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominating committee is set to meet June 5 in New York to discuss potential nominees for next year's induction ceremony, according to a member of the committee. Among the front-runners eligible for the class of 2004 are the Cars, the Cure, the Pretenders, Van Halen and X. The Rock Hall wouldn't comment on the schedule of its meetings. ...

    (Thanks Jeff)

"This morning on my way to work I heard on a local Indianapolis radio station a discussion regarding eligible musicians and groups for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Among others such as The Cars, Pretenders and Van Halen, The Cure were mentioned!

I have no idea what takes place from this point on but maybe some research could be done and possibly flood the "judges" with emails from supporters expressing our interest in The Cure being inducted into the Hall of Fame."

  • New interview with Robert:
  • From The Guardian:

    Pop cure-alls

    Robert Smith

Will Hodgkinson Friday May 30, 2003 The Guardian

Along with leading the Cure, one of the most influential bands of all time, Robert Smith appears to have unlocked the secret of freezing time. For a few years in the 80s you could go to any town in England and find at least one sullen youth with spiky black hair wearing a black mohair jumper, oversized trainers, eyeliner and a dash of lipstick.

Those boys have since grown up, thinned out on top and filled out in the middle, but the man who inspired them still looks exactly the same. The hair, makeup, black clothes and big trainers are all there, and Robert Smith doesn't even look any older. Bognor, where Smith lives, is one English town that still has its own spiky-haired youth.

The Cure are going strong, too. In November 2002 the band played three of their most acclaimed albums - Pornography (1982), Disintegration (1989), and Bloodflowers (2000) - in their entirety at the Berlin Tempodrom, and the film of that concert is now being released on DVD.

"Pornography and Disintegration are always the fans' top two albums, and mine as well," says Smith. "I wanted Bloodflowers to be the third part of a trilogy. The first two records had something that was there by virtue of the intensity we put into the studio, and they both resulted in putting me into a delayed state of shock. With Bloodflowers, because of my age, I can't recreate that intensity, but I think it has a lyricism that makes it compare favourably to the other two."

Pornography, the darkest of all Cure albums, was intended as a swansong. "My attitude was: it's all rubbish, we're rubbish, so let's go out with a bang," says Smith. "I wrote all the songs in a windmill over one weekend. We slept very little during the recording, there was a lot of drugs involved, and the stage shows that followed were just brawls between us and the audience. It's strange because that's not my nature at all, and it wasn't even fun. In fact it was really, really awful."

Smith has aimed for the intensity that all his favourite music has. The first record that touched him was Help! by the Beatles, which came out when he was five. "My sister used to play it in her bedroom, and I would sit on the stairs, listening to it through the door," he says. "It made me realise that there was another world going on beyond my immediate environment. The melodies on these tunes are so fantastic, and the imagination that goes into these songs is just unreal. It's so perfect it makes me weep. I listen to Help! and I'm filled with hope that the world could be a better place."

Smith's original idea for the Cure was to play perfect three-minute pop songs, despite coming out of the aggression and chaos of punk. "I was enamoured by the melody of the Buzzcocks and Elvis Costello, not the anarchy of the Sex Pistols," he says. "Living in Crawley, you really didn't have to go out of your way to get beaten up so I couldn't see the point in putting a safety pin through my nose. But Costello always seemed that bit cleverer. I bought my first guitar, a Jazz Master, just because he looked so cool with his. Ever since then I've bought guitars based on what they look like."

The Jimi Hendrix Experience's Are You Experienced? is Smith's favourite hippy-era album. "Hendrix was the first person I had come across who seemed completely free, and when you're nine or 10, your life is entirely dominated by adults. So he represented this thing that I wanted to be. Hendrix was the first person who made me think it might be good to be a singer and a guitarist - before that I wanted to be a footballer."

While Hendrix had planted the seed, Smith recognised Bowie as his first kindred spirit pop star. "I felt that his records had been made with me in mind," he says. "He was blatantly different, and everyone of my age remembers the time he played Starman on Top of the Pops. The school was divided between those who thought he was a queer and those who thought he was a genius. Immediately, I thought: this is it. This is the man I've been waiting for. He showed that you could do things on your own terms; that you could define your own genre and not worry about what anyone else is doing, which is I think the definition of a true artist."

The only problem with Bowie was that his total difference made him a very distant ideal, while Alex Harvey's brand of pop stardom offered up a much more attainable dream. "Alex Harvey was the physical manifestation of what I thought I could be. I was 14 when I first went to see him, and then I followed him around to all the shows. He never really got anywhere, even though he had something so magical when he performed - he had the persona of a victim, and you just sided with him against all that was going wrong. I would have died to have had Alex Harvey as an uncle."

For most of the 1980s, Smith avoided listening to his contemporaries. "I would be more familiar with Janet Jackson than I was with the Teardrop Explodes or Joy Division, because I didn't want to listen to my competitors for fear of nicking ideas off them," he says. "On the tour bus, it would either be disco, or Irish bands like the Dubliners."

A change came when Smith heard My Bloody Valentine for the first time. "It was the first band I heard who quite clearly pissed all over us, and their album Loveless is certainly one of my all-time three favourite records. It's the sound of someone [guitarist/leader Kevin Shields] who is so driven that they're demented. And the fact that they spent so much time and money on it is so excellent."

(Thanks Jan, Nils, Hugh, Simon, Jeff and Ben)

  • 'Perfect Blue Sky' on L.A. radio today?:
  • "i am not sure about this, but i think there's a chance for people to hear "perfect blue sky" today (may 30). i was driving home from work tonight (technically last night, but it's only 2:15 a.m. so it feels weird saying that, anyway..) and unexpectedly caught the song on "metropolis," a radio show featured on los angeles-based kcrw. according to the web site (kcrw.org), the show will be re-aired from noon to 3 p.m. (pst). based on when i heard it tonight, i think the song should come on between 2 and 2:30, but if you're determined to hear it, i'd suggest listening to the whole program. i'm sorry i can't provide better details, but i don't listen to kcrw all that often. in fact, the whole experience of me even hearing the song in the first place was either some crazy act of fate or a completely random fluke--i can never really tell.."

    (Thanks Rayna)

  • Speaking of Laser's Edge, look at what comes in at #2 on their Top Ten Pre Releases, even ahead of Chicago, The Two Towers and Gangs of New York.
  • (Thanks Paul)

  • Conflicting info on when the re-masters will be released:
  • "Watching the credits on the Trilogy DVD last night I noticed that after the songwriting credits for each album it mentioned that the digitally remastered version would be released in 2003 whereas the packaging states 2004."

    (Thanks Ian)

  • More on the NME article:
  • "Just an update on the NME front - they've now got the link to the Cure vote on the front page of the website (www.nme.com) and have a little picture of Robert too."

    (Thanks Mark)

And here's a look at the actual article and a blow-up of the text. Notice that it was written by Mark Beaumont, the same guy who wrote that scathing NME review of Bloodflowers (which was little more than a personal attack on Robert) 3 years ago. What an idiot!

    (Thanks Hugh)

  • Interested in having a Cure party in Belgium?:
  • "i was wondering if you could place a message on COF concerning an eventual Cure Party in Belgium. Me and some others are just wondering if there would be enough people interested in this kind of stuff. The party will most likely be held in Leuven or in Brussels ( but Leuven is most likely ). People who are interested in any way ( helping with organisation, sponsoring, bringing rare records with them, helping spread the message or just coming ) can always contact me at mrtns84@pi.be . If there should be enough people, expect something coming up beginning next schoolyear probably..."

    (Thanks Laurent)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I know this is very old but Benjamin Knight(Beachwood Sparks/the Tyde)used to listen The Cure Live in Benicassim in 2002 http://www.thetyde.com/newsarchive.htm/ and he use to mention The Cure as one of his influences. The Cure is also mentioned in their reviews http://www.popmatters.com/music/reviews/t/tyde-once.html"

  • NME declares The Cure are "cool" again:
  • "You may have seen this already, but the NME of all people are running a vote for people's favourite Cure songs. They even describe The Cure as having moved from "the not so cool to the too cool leagues". Interesting to see what they make of any new Cure stuff in the future!!

    Here's the link: http://www.nme.com/features/105153.htm"

(Thanks Jason, Steve, Mark, Si, Craig, Ronan, Ange and Rob)

"I am delighted to see that number 21 in NME's '51 Things To Do This Summer' (out today - 29th May) is: "Hang on to your panstick, The Cure become cool again".

Once the usual stupid remarks about hairdo's and smudged make-up are out of the way, they go on to big up Mr. Smith and co. in precisely the way they should have always been instead of poking fun. There's a picture which takes up the best part of half the page, but it's an old one - circa 1989 (Robert, Boris, Porl, Roger and Simon). A shortened version of the article is available at NME.com http://www.nme.com/features/105153.htm, where you can also vote for your favourite Cure track. The (longer) magazine article even goes so far as to mention the DVD and the new album. About bloody time!"

    (Thanks James)

  • Just a note that Laser's Edge have now sold out of their first shipment of Trilogy dvds, but they will be getting more copies tomorrow. Seems like you guys cleared them out last night. Good job! : )
  • (Thanks Marc)

"After reading the postings on the site over the past few days I decided to take a trip into Telford today and got my copy of the Trilogy DVD from HMV - and I have to say it is woth every penny of the £19.99 I paid.

Cure fans - you will not be disappointed !!!"

    (Thanks Kev)

"Virgin in Belfast have the DVD on the shelves now"

    (Thanks Ronan)

  • '100 seconds' instrumental written by Robert:
  • "Trilogy DVD arrived today from www.play.com, I notice that the intro/outro music used throughout the disc is called '100 seconds' but the songwriting credits for this instrumental are for Smith only rather than the entire band. I believe that this is the first piece to be solely credited to Robert since 1987.

Have only had time to listen to the Pornography set so far but the sound and picture are as good as the other fans have stated. You really appreciate the sound quality if you are able to hear it played in the Dolby Digital 5.1 format - the bass sounds fantastic!"

    (Thanks to Ian)

  • Some more places that have Trilogy in stock:
  • "I already got the TRILOGY DVD, too. It was available at 'Pro Markt' in Mainz/Germany. Since 'Pro Markt' is a chainstore it also should be available all over the country..."

    (Thanks Chris)

"Just to let you know that Virgin Megastore in Manchester has copies of the DVD on the shelves as it was confirmed to me via telephone. I could not go today as the city centre is chaotic due to a football match but first thing tomorrow morning I'm going to Virgin Megastore."

    (Thanks Davide)

  • Bad news for Norwegian fans:
  • "The norwegian music company BMG is not going to realease The Cure Trilogy until 10th of july . . . Look at their www.bmg.no and see link to the DVD. WHY WHY WHY ! ! ! . Again no good answer from the company . ."

    (Thanks Lars)

    (Thanks Steve)

  • And if you pre-ordered from Play.com, check your mail:
  • "Just to let you know that I received the Trilogy DVD from Play.com in the UK today - probably along with a thousand other people. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet - just a minor problem about going to work.

The packaging is better than I had come to expect from the few other reviews etc. All the four albums mentioned say they are due to be digitally remastered and released 2004, quite surprising for Bloodflowers."

    (Thanks David)

"I've just got my copy of the Trilogy dvd from Play.com in the UK, but I've not had a chance to play it yet as I have to go to a hospital appointment. But the dvd does come in a slip cover and then opens up into three with a picture for the first section then the two separate dvd's in the other sections."

    (Thanks Ed)

"Just to let you know that play.com has started shipping copies of the Trilogy DVD. I have mine right here! I can now confirm what everyone wants to know...the DVD package is fantastic! I am a teacher and have the fortunate pleasure of having sat and watched parts of it on a huge whiteboard screen with Dolby sound. The effects look amazing on such a big screen and the sound is superb. My advice to everyone is find a teacher friend who can play it to you on their whiteboard at school!!!!"

    (Thanks Geoff)

  • Vote Cure:
  • "I just stumbled onto something you might be interested in.. MTV2 is currently having viewers vote to pick the 22 greatest CDs ever released (err..new albums released since 1984, that is, when the CD format came into being). Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me actually made the voting list.. Here's the URL to vote: http://www.mtv.com/onair/mtv2/22_greatest/cds/index.jhtml "

    (Thanks Josh)

    (Thanks Steve and Stefan)

"Last night, at the end of the NHL hockey game on CBC between New Jersey and Anaheim, they played Just Like Heaven while showing a recap of the game. For a Canadian and a Cure fan nothing could go together better!"

    (Thanks Patrick)

    May 27th

  • You can listen to a clip from the Robert/JXL song 'Perfect Blue Sky' at the the Studio Brussel website.
  • (Thanks Koenraad)

  • Buy Trilogy at the Virgin Megastore in Hull right now:
  • "I went into Virgin Records in Hull today to pre-order the Trilogy dvd for next week and to my complete surprise and delight found it for sale, on the shelves, a week early!!!! Joy! Has any one else got it yet? I will post review tomorrow after watching."

I don't know if they plan on carrying it, but Wal-Mart is pretty notorious for breaking street dates, so you might want to check there over the next few days, in case they put it out early. If any one else finds it early, let me know.

    (Thanks Jason)

  • The Trilogy dvd package confirms that there will be some digitally re-mastered Cure albums released in 2004. This photo mentions 'Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me' specifically.

  • First press review of the Trilogy dvd:
  • "The first short but very very positive review of Trilogy : I was watching Paris Première here in France, a cultural TV magazine called "Rive Droite Rive Gauche". One of the journalist said he was a huge fan of The Cure, explained the concept of these very special shows "quite quite well filmed, The Cure giving all they had for four hours. Seeing the whole Pornography in 2002 is just amazing". I know this guy and he is hard to convince. For example in the same program he just burnt down shows of Annie Lennox and Lou Reed.

    1 - 0 , my friends !! "

    (Thanks David)

  • Another review of the Trilogy dvd:
  • "First of all, thanks to Isa, the best press relation in the whole world, for letting me get one sample of the upcoming DVD... I invited two french fans to come over for this premiere at my place. The packaging is really nice, not many information on it though. We sorta learn that Cure albums are gonna get digitally remastered, and re-released in 2004, no more precision about that for the moment.

Now for the content : OUTSTANDING, FOUR THUMBS UP, far beyond what i was expecting. Obviously the Pornography set is the most incredible one, the realisation is perfect, those cameramen and post production guyz rule. The video is really clear, still a bit grainy sometimes, but that's quite ok all along. The light show is amazing, did not even realize while at the concert, these were so good !

Disintegration set, is a bit static, less dynamic in the video sequences, but very good though, some special effects are very welcome, like on "the same deep water as you", Fascination street is perfect too. Didintegration gorgeous. Robert is making some frightening or funny faces from time to times, lol... Bloodflowers is also quite static, but with highlights on "watching me fall", 39 and Bloodflowers of course.

"The Kiss" filming is also incredibly good...

The sound i chose was the 5.1 mix, we played it loud on my sound system, and really reached heaven listening to it. I set my receiver on a DSP mode called "Theater something..." and was amazing. There are sometimes some special sound effects i think added in postproduction, but which are very welcome too...

As far as the bonus are concerned, i have to say I'm quite disappointed by them, but let you guyz watched them and make your own opinion... but don't expect to get any other encores... sorry to mention it here.

All I can say, is that it was a wonderful time, very long, but VERY GOOD... One of the friend who came over to watched it, is still floating in the air since, and won't get down till he gets his own copy on monday..."

Bill has also posted some photos of the dvd packaging.

    (Thanks Bill)

  • The official site has been updated with lots of news, Trilogy photos, band photos, lyrics for 2 new songs and more. So for those of you who took Planet X in the "Which will come first: Planet X or a Cure website update?" bet, pay up now. : )

  • Cure cover:
  • "The Tooth and Nail Records recording artist "The Huntingtons" who in past years, have played Ramones tribute shows with Joey Ramone, have just recently released a splitEP, with a European punk band called "The Retarded". On this cd, the Huntingtons perform an amazing cover of BOYS DONT CRY. Check it out at http://www.huntingtonsusa.com"

    (Thanks Stephen)

  • Blue Sunshine out on dvd:
  • "Cure related movies... this might be of interest to collectors. i recently came across this page on the web. it's about the release of the "blue sunshine" film, from where the name of the glove's album was taken, in dvd. seems it's only a zone 1 (usa and canada) release, and it's a 2 discs dvd set, limited edition of 50.000 copies. you can find more details about this release in: http://www.dvddrive-in.com/bluesunshinepromo.htm

this dvd is on sale at www.amazon.com for about $25. i haven't found any news of a zone 2 release, and neither about if this film will be released again later not as a limited edition, or not. any help about this matter will be appreciated if anyone knows something more about this."

    (Thanks Paulo)

  • Curespotting:
  • "in q magazine this month, there's a darling little article on hot hot heat, and yet again, the inevitable cure comparisons... (paraphrased) "the cure also have a song called "fire in cairo" and we have a song called "cairo"... which is also a coincidence."

    (Thanks Caro)

"I know you already have something posted re Tricky's cover of Lovecats, but I saw this on BBC Online:

"Why have you chosen to cover The Cure's Love Cats and XTC's Dear God?"

"Love Cats is a wicked, wicked love song - modern day Shakespeare. Robert Smith is a genius. I love the Cure and I've loved them for a long, long time."

    (Thanks Paul)

"It's incredible how The Cure is in every mouths and thoughts !

As Tricky has just made a cover of Love Cats, as members of Deftones say everywhere that Robert is their biggest influence, here in France Vincent Delerm remembers how charmed he was when he first saw Robert moving so strangely on stage and a member of Mickey 3D made a very nice declaration in a french magazine called Rock Mag in its June issue :

"I've never been searching myself. When I was 15, I discovered a band named The Cure and everything was clear : that's what I will do with my life."

In the same magazine, one can read that Blink 182 (arghhh !!) are listening to The Cure, DJ Shadow and The Cars as to get inspiration for their new LP sessions and Brian Molko compares the success of Placebo in France to Depeche Mode and The Cure ones.

In their last single, "Le Grand Secret", Indochine put a very short and nice 6 sting bass that could have been used on "Disintegration" or "Faith" : do you think it's accidental ?

I made a list of artists more or less popular that have used Cure stuff or talked about their admiration of our fav' band and IT'S VERY impressive : David Bowie, The Breeders, Tori Amos, M, Shakira (oh my God), Depeche Mode, Curve, No Doubt, Cranes, Ekova, The Smashing Pumpkins, Coldplay, Dinosaur Jr, Indochine, Leona Naess, JJ72, Dionysos, Hood, All About Eve, The Stranglers, Air, Mogwai, Peter Kingsburry (ex-Cock Robin), Mickey 3D, The Mission, Missy Elliot, Blink 182, Ride, Massive Attack, Vincent Delerm, Tricky, Moby, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Nine Inch Nails, The Strokes, Hell Is For Heroes, Migala, Lush, Limp Bizkit, Supergrass, Counting Crows, Cowboy Junkies... and Nirvana.

I read in a recent biography of Kurt that he loved deepfull writers like Morrissey, Michael Stipe and Robert, and he was sometimes writing letters to other musicians. I'm wondering if Robert and Kurt did.

It makes me think that one of my dreams came true when Robert and David joined on the Madison Square Garden stage a few years ago, but I feel so so sad that I'll never see Robert and Kurt. In a way they both went through hard times in their lives. One succeded in saving himself maybe because The Cure success came slowly. The other didn't managed to keep control on what happened to Nirvana and payed a so unjust price.

Anyway The Cure and Nirvana just changed my life and they'll stay in my mind FOREVER. "

    (Thanks David)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Saturday 24.05 (or was it this Sunday 25.05?), on French tv channel France 5, in a program called Ubik (arts, cinema, music, books, etc...) they talked about a band called Hot Hot Heat. They said they were the 'Canadian answer to the Strokes', keeping with their punk riffs some new-wave sounds inspired by the Cure and the Clash."

    (Thanks Fabien)

"In the may issue of Rolling Stone (french version), Nicola Sirkis from french band Indochine talks about Robert Smith :

"I think a band is like a painting. There always was on our premises a passion for the image, to pay attention to all that one did. A song is not right lyrics, tablatures, one needs also a video, some people... Yes, I was always interested by that. Without being presomptuous, Robert Smith is like that. In each band there is a guy like that"

    (Thanks Jean-François)

  • Looks like some stores already have Trilogy in stock:
  • "Just to let you know, I pre-ordered the Trilogy DVD from www.play.com and it was posted on 23rd May, so they must already have it in stock. Really looking forward to this DVD!"

    (Thanks Jim)

"Strange goings on yesterday. I rang HMV in Belfast Northern Ireland to see if they were getting the Trilogy DVD in on the 2nd of June! They said they didn't know but if I ordered a copy then it would definetly be there on time. About 2 hours later an assistant rang me from HMV to say my order had arrived and did i want to call in and get it!

Bad news is: When I said "Yeah! This is great cos it's not out for another 10 days", the jobsworth on the line said he couldn't sell it to me until the release date. Me and my big mouth. Still, it's good to know it's there. Already! If you hear of a late night break-in to the HMV in Belfast you ain't seen me! Right?"

    (Thanks Ronan)

  • Porl Thompson news:
  • "I just got the CD "Las Vegas is Cursed" by Hector Zazou and Sandy Dillon. Porl Thompson plays guitar on a very avant-garde track called "I Saw You Fall." Interesting, and always great to hear Porl's guitar playing!"

    (Thanks Rust)

  • Tricky talks about The Cure again:
  • "This was on the Channel Four telextext music page.

Q - Why have you covered the Cure's Lovecats?

A - If I was that much in love that is the song I'd like to write. It's one of the best love songs ever written and I've never stopped listening to it. It always comes on the tour bus with me."

    (Thanks Benj)

  • Cure radio contest:
  • "I thought folks who hit your site from the New England area may be interested to know there's a radio contest going on on 101.7 (WFNX) here, they play songs by one band for almost an hour, then afterward ask a question about the song order and if the right caller gets it correct they win $1000. Anyway this Thursday (5/29) it's the Cure at 12:45 pm EST. Unlikely as I am to win the contest, it will at least be nice to hear a radio hour devoted to the band! (For anyone in Boston who doesn't know it, yes WFNX has gone back to their old alternative/independent format, after "experimenting" with mostly hard-edged rock and rap-metal for the past year or so finally they play the Cure regularly again...hooray! Especially since listeners voted the Cure the 3rd best band ever in their last poll a couple years ago, topped only by U2 - hey, this is Boston - and Nirvana) You can listen on 101.7 (Boston), 92.1 (New Hampshire/Maine/Western MA) o r 103.7 (Rhode Island/eas! tern Connecticut). No netcast, unfortunately."

    (Thanks Justin)

  • Cure covers:

  • Curespotting:
  • "This I had never expected...prior to the start of CBC's (Canada's national public network) coverage the 2nd period of Game 7 of the NHL's Eastern Conference final (between New Jersey and Ottawa), "Just Like Heaven" was played while highlights of the game to that point were shown.

Ottawa ended up losing the game, much to my dismay, but at least I can take solace in the fact that someone at the CBC was able to demonstrate that hockey and the Cure can go hand in hand."

    (Thanks Phil and Shane)

  • Cure covers:

"I was listening to the industrial band DavaNTage when one of the songs sounded awfully familiar. Then the vocals kicked in and turns out it was Cold. Pretty good cover by a respectable industrial group."

"Interview with the Deftones from the current german issue of Visions magazine

Visions: The other not rocking song is "Anniversary of an uninteresting event". An orchestral arranged ballad with clear parallels to The Cure, which sounds like a kind of disillusioned christmas song. [...]

Moreno: To explain the boys where I wanted to go with that song, I played to them "Christmas Steps" by Mogwai. [...]

Visions: Chino, your abstract words by now show obvious parralels to the unconventional lyrics of Cure-boss Robert Smith. They don't make a concrete sense, but are moving in an undescribed room, which the listener automatically fills with his own imaginations.

Moreno: (nodding) I can honestly say that my biggest artistic influence is Robert Smith. I still don't have a clue what he sings about, but there's something attracting me. The songs I like the least by The Cure are the happy, direct ones, the hits. I love to be vague and abstract. [...]"

    (Thanks Dominik)

"Last Saturday went to my parents house to have lunch, after that, I went to my old room and dusted off some Beta videotapes, back then I used to tape videos, took the Betamax player out of the closet, tested and still worked. Started to watch those old videos, suddenly WAX "right between the eyes" popped up and had the surprise that Phil Thornally was on drums! Later found out that he was the producer too of that record "magnetic heaven"."

    (Thanks Ed)

"We are WIRO films and make videos for the web. It's a TV series called "INVASION CEREBRAL". I invite the people to watch some episodes and post a message on the FORO. "

    May 21st

  • I just got a Trilogy "Presentation Disc" in the mail. First, here's a look at the disc:
  • This is a shot of the main menu:

Play Presentation - Starts by showing the menu, then the audio for Prayers For Rain starts up, while a bunch of images from various songs (100 Years, Maybe Someday) plays. Eventually settles on the video for Prayers as well, before slowly fading out in the middle of the song.

Play Fascination Street - Plays the complete version of Fascination Street.

DVD Track listing - A listing of all of the tracks on the dvd. (photo)

Biography - The now standard "25 extravagant years" bio, updated with the Trilogy info. 6 pages long.

Release Information - The same text that you can find on the Eagle Vision website. (photo)

Ordering Information - UPC #'s for the dvd and video and other retail info. (photo)

Contact Information - Just a list of Eagle Rock contacts and their phone numbers.

This is what the menu looks like (from the brief glimpse that they provide). Each of the little windows have video of Berlin in them, and appear to be shot from a moving vehicle.

So how does it look and sound? Well this isn't the actual disc, and they didn't include the 5.1 audio, but this basic stereo mix sounds great. I can't wait to hear that surround mix now! As for the video, it looked pretty sharp to me, no serious grain, very impressive. I know many of us were a bit disappointed with the 'Hits' dvd, but this is light years away from that. Again, this is only 8 minutes of video, but if it is indicative of the actual disc, I'll be very happy with it.

But what about the actual content? Well that's where I might have a slight complaint. As we know, the show was filmed with 12 cameras, and that's great, as we get shots from above, below, the side, the crowd, the stage and many other interesting angles. But during Fascination Street, the editor decided that we should see everyone of those angles in quick succession, over and over again. I'm telling you, there's not a single shot that lasts more than 4-5 seconds at a time. It didn't bother me too much the first time I watched it, but by the third time, it was giving me a headache. It really isn't a big deal, I just hope the rest of disc isn't edited this way. The bits of Prayers For Rain included here are not edited that way, so it was probably just done for Fascination Street.

There are also some interesting effects added to the video. In Prayers For Rain, there are shots that have a sort of slow motion blur added, and others that look like someone was shooting the video off of a tv monitor that was losing the signal or had a bad reception. It's a pretty neat effect. And in Fascination Street, there's a sort of "wave motion" added to some shots and a "rippling water" effect added to another. A bit gimmicky, but not distracting at all.

So that's it for now, 8 minutes out of 222. Not nearly enough to satisfy, yet just enough to know that this is going to be something special.

(A million thanks to "Friend of COF" for sending me the disc)

  • Here's a look at the confirmed information about release dates for the Trilogy dvd:
  • Europe (incl. Russia) - June 2nd

    North America - June 3rd

    South America - June 15th

    Australia/New Zealand - July 21st

    Japan - t.b.c.

    S.E. Asia - t.b.c.

(Thanks to Lesley at Eagle Rock for providing the list)

  • A bit more about 'Perfect Blue Sky':
  • "I'm sorry but I was at work when they played it so I can't remember any lyrics and the only thing I recall about the song is it's a mid tempo song with an electro sound and there is the beautiful voice of Robert above. It reminds me of the song Yesterday's Gone with R.Gabrels, but with a much better production and, from my point of view, it sounds more like a Cure song."

    (Thanks Vit)

    May 20th

  • Bad news for Australian fans, Eagle has confirmed that Warner Vision will not release the Trilogy dvd until July 21st.
  • (Thanks Fuji)

  • A bit more about the Trilogy dvd interviews:
  • "interviews are broken into like 8? Chapters...or you can play all at once...basically questions...like WHY BERLIN? END OF AN ERA? Etc etc...dont hear the interviewer...it starts out with a black screen and the fragment or question...then segues into the answers...band is always separate...nothing is done as a group from what I can remember..."

    (Thanks "Friend of COF")

  • Cure program on French radio:
  • "MDM radio ( a french local radio) is broadcasting a special program for the trilogy DVD released on the 2nd of June. The programm will take 1 hour and a half (starting at 5:30 pm). It will be a combination of music and interviews. the music part will be a compilation of live performance, rarities and hits. On the interview, we are trying to get Ray Cokes, but for sure we have Mickey 3D, dimitri from LA voix du silence, and some "real" fans... We will try to put it on the web as soon as possible but for those around here.. the station is 101.1 FM "

    (Thanks Gaelle and Nico)

  • Another spoiler warning for you, some of the Trilogy "easter eggs" are about to be revealed. Skip this story if you want to discover them for yourself:
  • "found three easter eggs...one was an interview outtake...one was same deep water from a different camera just on Robert...one was a really cool Robert perspective of plainsong...walk on the stage, and then split into both nights perspectives...from a musicians point of view really cool to see how the sound is on the stage...I don't know if you play or have ever toured but sound on stage is minimal compared to crowd...so cool to see how he walks by monitors and the sound is huge and then there are pockets of quiet."

    (Thanks "Friend of COF")

  • A couple of other notes about the Trilogy dvd: It will be released in a Digipak, there will not be a booklet inside, and despite what D-Side magazine said, there ARE NOT two hidden songs from the encores.
  • (Thanks ROD)

  • Yet another Cure tribute band forming:
  • "My name is Jesse, were trying to put together the west coast's premier Cure tribute band. Its a union between members of Sweetest Perfection and The Sweet and Tender Hooligans. (DM and Smiths tributes). All we need now is a real good Bass player, we rehearse in LA, and would be grateful if u could pass this info along on your website. Any inquiries can be made to Jesse at Blame66@aol.com."

  • Curespotting:
  • "I have seen this tv ad a few weeks ago, but at that time i had my pc broken, so i couldn't mail you: the ad for the XI italian first aid meeting (which i think has already happened...) features friday i'm in love in the background. there's no voice, so the music (it's a 20-30 music piece just before the first line of the song) can be heard very well."

    (Thanks Pietro)

    May 19th

  • About that "Limited Edition" version of the Trilogy dvd:
  • "I think the first 40k for each territory are in the what you might call special packaging or rather the actual packaging. I think after that it will go to a more budget package, not a fold out inner. So its not so much a limited edition as that after the first run has sold, it will be a simpler package."

    (Thanks ROD)

  • More about the Junkie XL / Robert song 'Perfect Blue Sky':
  • "The record label MUSIKVERTRIEB (Switzerland) sent to the radio station the promo copy of the Junkie XL's album, sadly without the song with Robert Smith. This the official advance text about the song :

ROBERT SMITH - Perfect Blue Sky

Known to millions as the wild-haired, lipstick-smeared lead singer of The Cure, Robert Smith's exquisite vocals match Tom's sublime New-Wave-style production to perfection on one of the album's most beautiful tracks. Tom explains : "It's an electro track and it has a really moody vibe to it. It was so funny, I played it to ten different people and they were all like, Jesus, you should have Robert Smith to sing on this, and well, this track was intented for Robert. It feels like such a pretty love-song - that's how it turned out, in a Robert Smith way. His voice is so incredible - as soon as he starts singing there's no way you could mix his voice up with anyone else. It's like, Jesus, Robert Smith is doing a vocal on this track!"

    (Thanks José)

"I've just heard 'Perfect Blue Sky' on the radio in Spain and it sounds GREAT!!!"

    (Thanks Vit)

  • Cure covers:
  • "Charlotte Martin (who has mentioned The Cure several times in interviews as you have previously noted!) has now released a Cure cover on her web-site - it's Just Like Heaven and the complete track can be downloaded free of charge at www.charlottemartin.com in MP3 format from the "see / hear" section."

    (Thanks Mike)

    "From http://www.themissionuk.com/news/default.asp:

    EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

As previously mentioned, the Worcester show was recorded for future DVD release - We also took some time out to interview Wayne and shoot some additional footage, with a view to giving access via this site.

To start the ball rolling we've got an exclusive video of Wayne playing The Cure's 'A Night Like This' just before going onstage."

    (Thanks WIREBAUGHS)

"Went to see Wayne Hussey, (of the Mission) live in Leeds yesterday and he played a fantastic accoustic version of "A Night Like This" I normally don't like Cure covers, but Wayne did a very good job!"

    (Thanks Jason)

  • Curespotting:
  • "The readers of Musikexpress voted for their top 50 albums of the 80es... 22. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me 11. Disintegration (number #1 went to u2 - The Joshua Tree).

In a report about new writers from Berlin on 3 Sat on Sunday morning 'A Forest' and 'Inbetween Days' were used as background music for a report on Andre Kubiczek."

    (Thanks Dennis)

    May 18th

  • Here's a bit more about the Trilogy dvd:
  • The menus: "Menus are grainy black and white...Use more Berlin backgrounds like the intro...basic lists of Play Performance, Play Each Album, Change Sound, Interviews, etc., depending on which disc...There is music (during the menus)...same song for all menus...not totally sure if it is Cure or not...I usually have a good feel for their tunes and this is kinda a tribal start to semi ambient...hard to describe...would surprise me if it is them though."

I asked about those photos on the Splinter films page. Any of that in the dvd? "If there is, I can't find it...might be the hidden stuff."

Update: "Some of these photos are taken from the Wild Moody Swinging E.P.K. video!"

Picture quality: "Picture quality for menus and intros, think the "Tape" beginning of "Show", grainy black and white....The show itself is really nice and clear color...A few tweaks in a few songs of technology but all color...Other than the lighting I mentioned before, it is really well done."

(Thanks "Friend of COF" and Petr)

  • Two things about the Trilogy dvd that I'm trying to confirm with Eagle Vision. As soon as I know more, I'll post an update:
  • "The june issue of german music magazine "Musikexpress" features a trilogy ad, that says there will also be a limited edition in special high quality packaging."

    (Thanks Martin)

"I’ve been trying to track down when the Trilogy DVD will be available in Australia and found out yesterday that Warner will be distributing it. Unfortunately, their release date isn’t until the first week in August!!! Has anyone out there heard anything different to this? I’m hoping that they stuffed the date up because I can’t wait another 2 months!!"

    (Thanks Greg)

  • Cure covers:
  • "On the CD "Lunch With a Bouncing Space, Vol. II" Lenola does a wonderful cover of "Catch." I've heard a lot of good covers, but this one really has a great vibe to it. The rest of the CD is comprised of great indie rock tunes by various artists...one of the few times I would recommend a CD with a Cure cover for more than that reason.

The other CD is called "Flashbacks En Tu Idioma." It's a various artist collection that has Spanish cover versions of classic hits by, amongst others, Duran Duran, OMD, A-Ha, Depeche Mode, New Order ( and you guessed it) the Cure. Hacer El Amor turns in a radically reworked version of "Let's Go to Bed!" It's minutes before the famous keyboard riff is even introduced into the song, and even longer for the vocals - which are, of course, in Spanish."

    (Thanks Rust)

  • New Cure book coming out in france:
  • "I would like to inform you that a french book called "The Cure - Clinical Prescriptions - Experiences 76-87" will be released in the middle of June. It will be printed at 1000 copies and it contains 128 full color pages, 400 documents, with more than 100 professional photos, interviews etc... More information is available on the website of the association 'La Voix du Silence" at www.lavoixdusilence.com. At the moment, it is only available in France for shipping."

    (Thanks La Voix du Silence)

  • Suddenly, everybody wants to start a tribute band. This time in France:
  • "I am 22, live in La Roche Sur Yon (France, Vendee) and I play bass (beginner but I can play about 40 songs of The Cure). I would like to form a group playing The Cure style. Can you put my demand in the news of your Website? Email: cgchallans@hotmail.com"

  • Here you go, our first peek at the Trilogy dvd:
  • "The only "technical" thing i saw that was odd was during the dead end of pictures and good part of closedown...the dvd was whacked...went staticy like something was wrong...i dont know if that is because i have a pre-copy or there are scratches etc...but otherwise everything seemed to play fine...the sound was great...compared to my other dvd's this one exploded through my speakers...the band were great...

robert...always continues to amaze me at the length of the show(s) that he always is right on and not fading...strong vocals...excellent guitar work...the kiss is just flat out awesome...he just wails...big fan too of how he uses different guitars from the different eras...i want to say i spotted three different fender bass vi's throughout the show...

simon...really love watching him...i would say he seems to have the most emotion through the show and it shows in his playing...he realy nails all the songs...and some of his work on disintegration songs are really cool to see...i saw the prayer tour when i was 15 from like a mile away in giants staduim...so seeing things up close on (plainsong homesick) are fun now...

perry...some awesome guitar work on the albums he didnt play on (studio versions)...was really impressed with what he was doing sonically...

roger...very focused...he is a great musician...i love some of the subtle fills he adds to the older songs...just breathes new life into some already stellar songs...

jason...did a great job with pornography and disintegtration pieces...thought he did a great overall job and showed himself as a really cool drummer...my only beef which is total personal preference is that when boris played the drums sounded so HUGE, and they just dont anymore...i dont think it is anyones fault and i certainly wouldnt take anything away from jason, just a different sound sonically...

the interviews were really cool...abotu 35 minutes worth...everyone talks...i find the most interesting parts to hear simon talking about his feelings with playing pornogrpahy tunes again (due to his and roberts strained relationship back then) and then to hear robert talk about it again as well...was very cool...

the encores rocked out...i still cant find the hidden stuff so let me know if you know where it is...i am never good at those easter egg things!!!...the kiss just sounded huge...everyone was way into it in the band from the looks and emotion of the playing...

pornography set was really cool...like the band has said and interesting way to start a show but i have to admit i love this triology idea and i think it worked well...personally i havent seen a few of these songs live so it was cool to hear the 2002 take on them...i love short term effect and the title track so always nice to see them live...

disintegration...brings back memories for me personally...bells of plainsong are something that always give me chills...i thought the songs were right on and played well...my only complaint would be that i couldnt hear roberts bass vi that well and there was limited or no delay on it (me as a anal guitarist speaking!!)...everything else i have on video or cd it is the driving force of that era...and on this particular dvd i thought it was buried...last dance plainsong and homesick are favs here...

bloodflowers...i thought it was great to see this documented after seeing the tour...sounded great...i loved hearing the loudest sound and then going into the force of 39 and the title track...i wish they would have snuck in coming up!!!>..that would have rocked out...

all in all i thought it was super cool...it opens in a grainy shot of a sign that says berlin and then kinda splits the screen into 3's (trilogy i assume)...i need to find the hidden stuff but what was on the basic dvd was great...i think fans of all generations will love it...

the only thing that i was a little taken back by (if i comepare it to show) was the lighting...i felt that it was either way too dark or just BEAMING light right into the cameras...i think the beauty of the live cure show (other than music of course) has always been the visuals...and you cant really see the backdrop at all less certain shots...the camera cuts really REALLY quick in some songs too and you are like who was that what was that...and then sometimes stays focused...but that is strictly my opinion...i need to watch it again...and again and again!!!..."

    (Thanks "Friend of COF")

  • Well, I know of at least one extremely lucky person who has a copy of the Trilogy dvd today. He says he'll send in a review on Monday, but I'm hoping to convince him to share some impressions with us this weekend. If not, then we can all look forward to the first dvd review next week.
  • Update: Look for the review to be posted tomorrow, if everything works out.

  • There's a Glastonbury dvd being put together, with footage from the 1994-2002 festivals, and you can vote for the bands you would like to see included. At the moment, The Cure from 1995 is not one of the options, but you can e-mail them at webmaster@glastonburyfestivals.co.uk and suggest that they be added.

  • Looks like the new Dom Joly series will be starting soon:
  • "Just purchased a copy of Word magazine in the UK, and there's a section called Word of Mouth ('where people we like tell us the things they like') and mister Dom Joly has a little section. Anyway, there's a little snippet of information that may prove useful at the bottom, in italics: 'THIS IS DOM JOLY airs on BBC3 from May 18th. So I guess we can look forward to seeing The Cure perform the wonderful Just Like Heaven and maybe even The Kiss, real soon after that."

Update: "A quick search at http://www.radiotimes.com for 'dom joly' reveals it airing on Tuesday 27 May at 9:30pm - no further information, but it seems likely this is the actual start of the new series."

  • Can someone help with this one?
  • "I was recently at a new, very trendy L.A. Hotel (The Viceroy in Santa Monica), and they always have music playing outside as well as in all the elevators and halls; mostly house-type music, but usually pretty good. I was walking through the halls a few nights ago and could have sworn I heard a looping track which featured this very smooth rhythm groove and the main guitar riff from "In Your House" just looped over and over with some ambient keyboards here and there. If it was IYH, it was a really good sampling job and rhythm; I would love to find the full track. Have you ever heard of this? I wasn't able to find any info online."

Update: "I think he heard a song from the french band RINOCEROSE, which is now a well-known band in the house/electro wave in USA. The song is "Machine pour les oreilles", wich appears on the album "Le mobilier" (issued in 1998). This song is sampled with "In your house". you can have a look on it here : http://www.plainsong.net/covers/Samples.html"

  • Here's the press release from Eagle Vision. Its a pdf file, so get Acrobat Reader if you need it. The only new info is that in addition to the hidden tracks we knew about, there will also be 3 hidden interviews as well.
  • (Thanks to Nicolas from Voodoo Smile fanzine)

  • A slight spoiler about the bonus tracks on the Trilogy dvd, so if you want to be surprised, go on to the next story - French magazine D-Side has confirmed that the 3 hidden tracks (the new press release says only 2) ARE taken from the encores (M, Play for Today, A Forest, Grinding Halt, Boys Don't Cry), but doesn't say which songs they are.
  • (Thanks Bill)

"Up and coming UK rockers Hell Is For Heroes release their latest single "Retreat" on EMI this week which includes a cover of Boys Don't Cry as a b-side. The song has been re-arranged so Robert Smith had to give his permission (which he did). For non UK residents, you can get it on import at Amazon."

  • Can anyone help Ronan with this one?
  • "Has anyone heard Groove Armada's First LP, Vertigo? Can youy tell me if the intro to the 1st track is in fact a sample of Sanke Pit?"

Update: "In response to Ronan's question about the Groove Armada track. I have the album he is referring to, "Vertigo", and can confirm that track 1 of this record does not contain a sample of Snake Pit. The CD sleeve gives details of all the songs, and this song (titled "Chicago") has the writing credit A.Cato and T.Findley, and there is a credit for guitar by Keeling Lee, but the song is not listed on the page that gives credits for samples used so I assume this is a totally original composition. Can I ask if it is definitely the track "Chicago" we are referring to as I personally don't hear anything on it that sounds anything like Snakepit! I've got the UK version on Pepper Records (Catalogue 0530332), maybe's there's another version around with different tracks? "

    (Thanks Ronan and Dave Ace)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Something I saw yesterday and it was brilliant. I never heard about this:

At an alternative gender film festival in Brussels yesterday, the 6th of May, I saw the movie Gypsy 83, directed by Todd Stephens. It's a fantastic movie - funny and touching - featuring a young woman Gypsy, who adores Stevie Nicks and a boy Clive who's an absolute fan of the Cure. At least 4 songs of The Cure are used, loads of Cure accessories (posters, t-shirts, etc...) a background of graveyards, churches etc. Obviously, there's so much more in this beautiful movie. I can't find it for sale anywhere and hope they'll be able to release it one day. People living near Brussels: they show the movie again this Saturday, the 10th of May at 16h60. Worth it ! (More info on the movie: www.gypsy83.com / more info on the alternative gender film festival: www.pinkscreens.org)

If anyone knows where to buy the movie, please let me know !"

    (Thanks Evelyne)
