  • Nothing really new to report on the DVD situation. I went ahead and ordered one from CDzone, just to see what will happen. They accepted the order and said they would e-mail again when it ships, so if anything happens with that, I'll post it. Meanwhile, Jeff has the following to report:
  • "I saw the posting on the cure dvds so i called some reliable sources in wea and elektra...they really have no knowledge of them on the schedule, but did say it is one of a few bands that they were pushing to get released on dvd...they couoldn't confirm if extra footage would be there or if they would be the same as vhs, but i think it is unoffically on their radar...so although uselss!!...they are being honest at least..."

    (Thanks Jeff)

  • Danielle Spencer: life after Crowe

24 MAY 2001 By CAMERON ADAMS

You cover the Cure song A Night Like This on your single, was that a favourite of yours?

Yeah, I really like that song, it probably is my favourite Cure song. You always wonder `Should I be doing this?' It seems disrespectful almost. But I quite like the way it's turned out and it's in the spirit of fun. But when someone does their song you worry about not doing it so well.

    Were the Cure an influence?

I think so, lots of people influence you and you're not aware of it.

Blast Off (EMI) out now. White Monkey will be released in July/August.

    (Thanks Eva)

"Mogwai's excellent new album, "Rock action", contains a song called "2 Rights make 1 wrong" (track #7). This song is instrumental. If it had the lyrics of the Cure song "Breathe", it would simply be a cover. In other words, "2 Rights make 1 wrong" is an instrumental cover of Breathe. "

  • Curespotting:
  • "There was a snippet (from I think the original version) of 'A Forest' played during 'Trigger Happy TV' on Channel Four on Friday night (25th May). "

    (Thanks James)

"Dom Joly the presenter of trigger happy tv said the people he would most like to interview in his hilarious show would be Robert Smith and David Bowie. its on his trigger happy tv site.

    (Thanks Vannesa)

"I saw the soap opera Wild Angel (or something like that) on Slovak Television and there was been playing The Cure several times on the background."

    (Thanks Zuzana)

"just wanted to tell you in the saturday boston herald there was a robert plant concert review, where they said "His current band, the Strange Sensations (featuring ex-Cure guitarist Porl Thompson who played some ripping leads)..." then it's not too hot review after that, but yay for Porl!"

  • Some bad news to report today. Despite the listing at CDzone and a report from someone who ordered them at a store in Montreal, I can find no proof that these Cure dvds actually exist. I've checked all of the US stores I can think of and they don't have them listed. I've checked all of the DVD news sites that I go to and none of them have any info on these releases. So what does Elektra have to say about all of this? Robert Rice called them and here is his report:
  • "I called Elektra/Asylum in Los Angeles to get some kind of confirmation and they were pretty much useless...I cannot understand why they couldn't tell me anything about their own releases...kinda like right foot not knowing what the left is doing or something....hopefully it is coming out. They said it may already be released and I should call Tower records and so I did but I didn't find any listings for them there either. "

Good old Elektra, always on top of things. So why is CDzone listing these dvds as imports from the US? Where did they get their info from? Are these dvds really coming out in the near future? I don't know, but you can bet I'll be trying to get those answers over the next couple of days. If any of you have further info on this or have actually seen them in stores or on-line, please let me know.

    New Cure tribute album out!

"Prayers for Disintegration - A Tribute to The Cure" is a new tribute album that has been released right now through the excellent Black Flames label. The compilation holds 74 minutes and 15 tracks including versions by Tres Hombres, Michelle, God's Bow, Thule, Le Fleur, La Facheuse, EM, Piotr Pi?ko?, Thorn, PCM, Lorien, Ania Zachar & Dave Blomberg, Usta Bilizowane, Eva and Common Dream. Tracks covered vary from "The Holy Hour" over "Pictures Of You" to "Plainsong" and "Charlotte Sometimes". For sure an item to have in your collection seeing the strong line-up of this release! The release is also available through Audioglobe, Italy. Check the label's page, beware, they have a very slow connection, nevertheless, this is a label to follow from really close.

  • "On saturday afternoon (19th of may) I went to see and support "le Stade Francais" the parisian team versus "Leicester" the english team for the European Rugby Cup Final which was taking place in the "Parc des Princes" stadium (45000 seats) in Paris. During the short show before the competition, they played music and the last one before the 2 teams came in the stadium was "Just like heaven"!!! I heard my favourite band before the match, I thought it was a sign that my team was going to win... unfortunatly we lost 30 to 34 :-( I must admit english team played a better game. Well The Cure are english, so my only satisfaction is that they had to be happy. I know the band loves Football, what about Rugby?"

    (Thanks Olivier L. and Muriel)

"On saturday the 19 of May, swedish television showed a documentary about Swedish rock- band "Kent". The showed some clips from their show at the Roskilde festival and during some backstage clips they played "Lullaby" and "Plainsong" in the background. They also filmed outside The Cure´s dressingroom. "

  • Curespotting:
  • "Sad as it may seem, I was getting my daily fix of "Neighbours" tonight (Wednesday 16/5) when to my surprise there were two Cure references. The first when Toadie told Joel "he looked depressed enough to listen to The Cure on rotation", and later when asked by Libby what was wrong with Joel the response was "Teenage angst.... expect to hear Pictures of You blasting out of the kitchen in the next few minutes"."

    (Thanks DMW and Tom)

"Yesterday evening (15th of may) on the french tv channel M6, there was a science popularized programme about animals behaviour. During the first report that explains (well try to... :) ) how a cat joined by itself its mistress, they played 3 Cure songs excerpts to my surprise & to my very all pleasure! "the love cats" while introducing the cat called Titus, then "jumping someone else's train" while showing the cat way (50 kilometres long in 2 months!!!) to join its mistress and "a forest" to explain the reasons of this strange faculty (apparently magnetism reasons). Note that when the mistress find it, the cat weight was only 900 grammes & couldn't move on anymore. Now it is in very good health. "

"Jjust a quick note to tell you that Close to me (Closer mix) is being used by Telefonica de Argentina in one of their commercials..."

  • New Album News - This probably won't surprise anyone, but sessions for the new album have been delayed yet again. The new sessions are now "penciled in" for mid-August.

  • Solo Album News - Nothing really new to report on that Trent/Flood rumor, but one source has described it as "far fetched" since the solo album has been shelved until after the recording and promotion of the new Cure album. Doesn't mean it won't happen in the future, but work on the new Cure album comes first.

  • A 60 minute special of The Cure Live at the Barrowlands in 1984 will be aired on the Swedish digital cabel network Comhem on pay-per-view. Dates for the show are May 24,25,26 and 27.

"We all know about the MECHA-STREISAND episode starring Robert, but has anyone seen his second South Park cameo appearance? I saw my first SP Timmay episode (finally) the other night. It was the espisode where Timmay was in a rock band. Anyway, MTV's Kirk Loder was reporting about the band on the MTV News. Just like the real MTV News, there were lots of monitors in the back ground with music videos playing. If you have a good eye, Robert is on one of the monitors!"

  • Solo Album news - According to a report on the Nine Inch Nails site Seems Like Salvation, Trent Reznor and Flood will be producing Robert's solo album. This is only a rumor at this time, and has not been confirmed by anyone in the Cure camp as of yet . I'm looking into it and will post any new info as soon as I get it.

  • A very interesting theatre project to feature Cure songs:
  • Can You Tell The Difference Between Real Life and Reel-Life?

A selection of Cure tracks will be featured in the "soundtrack" to a radical piece of multi-media theatre due to be staged in London later this year. Ita Marten of Fiction has issued a letter to the production company - Polymath - stating that Robert has been consulted, and that all relevant parties are "happy" for them to proceed as per the proposal submitted.

'Why Can't I Be You?', 'Want' and 'The Kiss' are just three of the tracks mentioned in the script. Since original recordings will be played, intervention from the MCPS (Mechanical Copyright Protection Society) will be unnecessary.

The show, called 'Famous Last Words', has been compared in style to films like 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Trainspotting'. The synopsis and further details of the production can be found at www.polymath.uk.com

Details of the venue and performance dates will be announced within the next week or so, but it's likely to run for a minimum of one month, starting at some point in October. Proceeds from the opening night will be donated to the mental health charity - 'Mind'.

    (Thanks James)

  • Here's a review of The Cureheads gig in Belfast and an interview with the band:
  • "There are not many English bands that venture out to visit us in Belfast. Now things are better here and the "Troubles" are calming down I suppose we're not seen as a COOL place to perform anymore. Even The Cure & U2 seem to have forgotten us. That was until last weekend, when we were descended on by possibly the best tribute band that I have EVER seen.

When it was announced on local radio in Belfast that The Cureheads would be visiting Northern Ireland; I laughed. The Cure has not been here for years. In fact the last time I saw them was at Shepherd's bush in London a couple of years ago.

Was this the best the Cure had to offer us in return for years in the wilderness? A “Bjorn Again” in red lipstick? “A cure drag act?”

I have seen many wonderful accounts of how sceptics of both Tributes AND Cure Covers had been magically brought round by this strangely infamous Tribute act to The Cure.

It has to be a tribute to the Cure's PR and Image that even their Tribute band has a certain air of Mystery & Infamousness about it.

The venue; "The Empire Music Hall" lent itself perfectly to the "Cure atmosphere" a grand affair covered in Red Velvet, Gold Leaf & Moulded Cherubs reminding many of us of the atmosphere created in the Never Enough or Lullaby videos.

Before the show even started there were about 300 of us chatting excitedly of the first time we had seen the Cure, each of us trying to outdo the others for how long WE had been into them.

I met 3 people that I hadn’t seen since The Wish Tour Shows, already this Cure Tribute thing was starting to have it’s merits. They were getting to me already. I was starting to realise how much I had Missed seeing The Cure live. The Cure has always been about memories to me. For no other reason than having grown up with The Cure’s music their concerts are always a wash of Colours , Feelings & smells to me.

We were all starting to shuffle as the time for The Cureheads to appear onstage came and went. Then all of a sudden at 11.20 the lights went up & there they were getting stuck into “Maybe Someday” possibly the only “Pop” song of The Cure’s Last Album “Bloodflowers”.

It must have been the smoke & the lights or maybe the the thumping Bass bouncing off the thigh of Simon Gallup (circa A’la “Cure in Orange big hair”) silhouetted in the corner of the stage, Or The perfect delays & reverbs on the Drum sounds and yes even I have to admit it ; almost definitely “the Robert Like Presence” exuding from The Now Infamous Mr Gary Ash . The biggest factor had to be that these guys were playing as a band . I was swept up completely in the whole atmosphere of it all. Fascination Street went & came as did a perfect rendition of Chain Of Flowers. I had meant to review the gig as it came, but unfortunately it came & went & the colours came back to me inciting wonderful sun filled memories.

Suffice to say they ended up playing 3 Encores & the promoter actually came onto the stage to Close the show promising to bring The Cureheads back to Ireland in October. I and at least 300 other people cannot wait and not being able to afford the trip to Roskilde will be extremely thankful.

The Cure must be extremely proud to have such a tribute paid to them.

    By Porl O’Shea

The Belfast Evening Standard May 2nd 2001

Interview –“Epitaph”- (Not published In B-ET) I met The Guys after the Show (at the bar where they appeared almost instantaneously after the third encore) & was amazed to find that they were not The Cure “Anoraks“ that I imagined.

PO- It’s nice to meet you guys I really enjoyed the show tonight

Sean- Cheers Mate (Shakes My hand) I really enjoyed it too. Can I have a Guiness Please? (To the bar lady)

Nick- Yeah The Audience were fantastic, they always are in Ireland.

PO – You seem to have become very well known as a tribute band, how has this come about ?

Sean- Mainly through the internet , we give away a free CDROM video of ourselves playing live through our website & lots of people have taken it up & been surprised. We’ve also had some nice stuff said about us on a website called Chain of Flowers. It has to be the best Cure information service going. It’s a shame really but it puts the Cure’s website to shame. What ever happened to the cure’s mailing list ?

PO- What does Robert think to your tribute ?

Gary- I don’t know !! I suppose officially he hates us, it’s probably one of those things that he detests about humanity. Probably in a list with things like Karaoke and “Shane Ritchie’s Big Night out.. But that’s what he has to say .. isn’t it ? (I bet he has a karaoke machine at home). I would, if I were rich… and a candy floss machine… & a Star Trek Pinball machine ( If I was really rich ) & I’d try to get that mouse trap game made up really big in the garden………. I really don’t know… I would say I don’t care, I enjoy doing it, but… I suppose I do care…a little bit . Can I have a Guinness now please ? My head hurts… You said you’d buy us a drink if we spoke to you

PO- Sean is that your real Hair ?

(Gary spits the Guinness I just bought him down his (own) front & is laughing hysterically.)

    Sean- Yes.

(As we speak four local beer boys come up & stand in front of Gary we all feel slightly worried, they then ask sheepishly if Gary will pose for a photograph with them. Gary sheepishly indulges.)

PO- Jeremy you joined the band as the new guitarist 2 months ago, how are you finding it ?

Jeremy- It’s fantastic, I never dreamed in a million years that I’d be travelling to New York or Ireland by playing the Cure’s music live. I’m proud of the band & Gary is a great front man. The audiences don’t know what to expect & we always seem to make them smile. What could be better than that ? We’re all writing together at the moment & having a well-rehearsed band is really useful. Some of the stuff we are doing is really good . Of course; some of it has an obvious Cure Influence whilst some of it is completely new ground. It’s hard for all of us to get away from that feeling that maybe Robert or the guys are going to be listening to what we do & maybe “they wont like what we’re doing”. It’s hard though when you’ve been so involved in doing a tribute. Yet we all agree that’s the only way we’re going to write something useful. So there’s a sort of unsaid thing between all of us that eventually before we can go forward with our own stuff, “we have to put The Cureheads to sleep”

PO- A Last word from Rachael

Rachael -Thanks for the beer, cheers mate.

    (Thanks Paul)

  • Curespotting:
  • "There was a couple of mentions of The Cure in a long (17page) Depeche Mode interview in the May issue of 'Uncut' Magazine:

p.45 "When instant rock fame failed to materialize, Dave enrolled at art college. But he was still "humping gear" and occasionally singing for a friends New Wave band, The French Look. The group shared it's keyboard player, Martin Gore, with Composition of Sound, featuring Andy Fletcher on Bass and Vince Clarke on guitar and vocals. Fletch now recalls the trio sounding like "a dodgy CURE".

p.48 "The Synth-Pop trend withered, but the Mode stuck unfashionably to their guns. Although their commercial profile would build steadily throughout the eighties, UK critics consistently dismissed the band as comically pervy lighweights. They were a casiotone CURE, a Toytown New Order, but without the credibility or mystique of either.

P.52 "Fletch finally quit the Violator sessions and checked himself into a south London hospital which, years later, would become synonymous with rock-star rehab - The Priory. "It was quite a normal place", he recalls. "Now of course, celebs check in there as a career move. That certainly wasn't the case with me. The day I went there for the first time I thought I was going into a mental institution. It was funny because when I went in There the geezer from the CURE was in there, LAWRENCE. We were both in the same situation". "

"On Thursday (03.05.01) a German Music-Quiz-Show entitelt: "Hast du Töne" aired on the channel Vox. The Band performed Lullaby from the Cure. After the Song was recognized the Showmaster said:" that was Robert Smith, the Lilo Wanders of the Gothic Movement." Lilo Wanders is a Transvestite whos Make Up is very extreme and she presents a Love& Sex Magazine on the channel Vox. Funny, isn't it?"

"On Sunday morning in france on the tv chanel TF1, there is a program about soccer called 'telefoot', and today 6th of May, while they showed a brief report about the semi-final opposing France and England in the under 16 European football cup (taking place in Sunderland, UK), they played around 15 seconds of 'boys don't cry' while France was scoring their third before qualifying for the final 4-0. That was really enjoyable to see my two fave teams play with my fave band as musical background."

In what appears to be a wonderful gesture to its fans, The Cure will return to Roskilde (June 28 to August 1) for the band's only European festival appearance of this summer following the cancellation of its set at last year's event.

The band was due to play immediately after Pearl Jam on the main Orange Stage, but had to pull out when a crowd surge during the U.S. rockers' set led to the deaths of nine fans.

The trip to Denmark will involve the band coming out of the studio and making this one-off show a special case.

The group's agent, Martin Hopewell of Primary Talent, said, "The Cure have had a long and very happy relationship with Roskilde, and always appear in its audience-survey list as one of the most-requested acts. This is very much a case of ‘unfinished business,' and I'm very pleased indeed that it's happening."

  • Hopefully this will end the confusion about the Sunday tickets:
  • "I just wanted to say that sunday tickets at Roskilde are available, even if the Festival should be sold out. I asked the Roskilde Info Center by email (bigbox@roskilde-festival.dk) and they gave me this answer: There is no limit on sunday tickets, but will only be sold on sunday the 1st of July from 8:00am."

    (Thanks Peter)

And for those fans who have been around for awhile (or who look the part & can make a good fake id):

If you are over 50 yrs. old - it is totally free for you to walk in sunday!!! :)

But I don't know how many fans are that age .. hehe

    (Thanks Tobias)

  • The Cureheads will be playing at the Garage in London on May 12th at 8pm.

  • Curespotting:
  • "I was driving home from work tonight listening to rock line . Billy and Troy from A Perfect Circle both mentioned The Cure as one of their biggest musical influences."

    (Thanks Chris)

"I was listening to talk radio today in Tulsa, OK. On the Clark Howard Show, the bumper music before returning from commercial was "Just Like Heaven". Then 1 minute later they went to commercial again (short segment for some reason) and the bumper music was "Friday I'm in Love". If The Cure ever need consumer advice, they've probably got a fan over in Clark Howard's office."

    (Thanks Aaron)

"The Cure get a reference in "dead mans curve" the film when they are trying to make it look as if their room mate killed himself they go to a psychiatrist and ask her what sort of books/music depressed people listen to. she definitely says the cure and i think joy division get a mention too!"

    (Thanks Matt)

"While in the mall, here in San Antonio Texas, i was walking into a Suncoast video store. Just before I walked in, I heard The Last Day of Summer over the mall speakers. So, as I guess most of you can assume, I sat on a bench to listen until it was over then I went into Suncoast Video. "

    (Thanks Jim)
