From N.M.E. :
IS THERE TO BE NO CURE?
The Cure - They've always been such a happy bunch!
Rumours that THE CURE will split following the completion of their current world tour have started to intensify.
The band are currently on the American leg of their 'Dream Tour 2000', to promote their 13th studio album 'Bloodflowers', which was released on Valentine’s Day in the UK through Polydor. The band have already played live throughout Europe, and the tour is set to end in August.
Rumours are now growing that the band will finally split, following Cure vocalist Robert Smith's claims he is working on a solo album. Speaking about the project he told reporters: "It's not the kind of album that'll be played a lot on radio. They're not verse-chorus-verse-chorus."
Following the release of his solo record, Smith revealed he plans to take some time off instead of touring again. He added: "I've spent almost 25 years touring. I really want to stay at home more."
But a spokesperson for the band played down the rumours that the band are to split, saying: "The Cure are out of contract with Polydor now they have finished 'Bloodflowers', so this is the last album they are committed to make...there is no pressure on them. These rumours about the band splitting always circulate about The Cure, so we'll have to just wait and see."
From Spin:
I Smell A Cure Scoop... The Cure have spawned 13 studio albums, the latest of which was Bloodflowers, released this February. Because of this, I have changed my mind-instead of referring to the Santana/Rob Thomas opus "Smooth" as "the old bat that refused to die," I now reserve that label for the Cure. Until now...uh, maybe. According to NME.com, the scintillating Robert Smith is now talking a bit about the solo album he is currently working on, which he says will not be radio-friendly (translation: it will be good?). Smith also reportedly said he would like to take a little break from 25 years of road life after the American stint of their Dream Tour 2000, happening as we speak, wraps this August. However, a band spokesperson told NME.com that a rumor is just a rumor (ah, yessss...) and that Bloodflowers simply marks the final album they are obligated to make under their contract with Polydor records, and as for the future, "we'll just have to wait and see." Has anyone seen the Sixth Sense? Sometimes when I look at Robert Smith, I think maybe I too see dead people.

The Cure have a gambling chip designed in their honor
Every second rock star has his face on a stamp these days, but The Cure have just be the world's first rock band to have a gambling chip named in their honor.
The band played The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel over the weekend and as a mark of respect, the Casino made a Cure gambling chip for the fans to use just on that day.
Robert Smith said he was delighted with the honor.
As the band continue their trek across the USA, work from their homeland is starting to confirm earlier reports that this will be their last.
Dotmusic England say Robert Smith plans on making a solo album after this tour and putting to rest The Cure as a band.
Smith has often started that he wouldn't take the band past his 40th birthday (he is now 41).
(Note: Actually, Hard Rock did not issue the poker chip yet, saying that it would be at least another week before they are ready.)
(Thanks Nicole)
So the Dream Tour is probably over for us and it's tough. We are still hoping to make it to Chicago and Detroit, but time is running out. This is where we need help from fans in those areas. What airports are closest to the venues in Chicago and Detroit? How far of a drive is it from Chicago to Detroit? Are there cheap hotels near the venues? Any other helpful info about the areas would be appreciated. Thanks!
Also, we have some photos to scan and upload, but it will take a couple of more days to get them all up. I hope to do some tomorrow, but we have to deal with getting our air conditioner fixed, so who knows what will happen with that. Anyway, I will be updating as much as I can over the next few days, while still keeping up with all of the new reviews and setlists as they come in. And yes, I will be updating the Dream Tour Songlist page ASAP. Now, on with the news.
(Thanks to everyone who e-mailed about this)
Is this the final Cure?
PREVIEW: Robert Smith says the newest album is the group's swan song.
May 26, 2000
By RICHARD CHANG The Orange County Register
Robert Smith, founder and lead singer of the Cure, insists his latest album, "Bloodflowers," is the band's last.
Again.
He's been saying that for the past decade.
"The album was conceived as a final album - it was recorded in that atmosphere," he said from his home south of London.
The lyrics certainly sound like this is the final Cure effort: "So the fire is almost out and there's nothing left to burn/ I've run right out of thoughts and I've run right out of words" (from "39"); "No I won't do it again, I don't want to pretend/ If it can't be like before I've got to let it end" (from "Maybe Someday").
Sure, Smith, one of the kings of 1980s doom-and-gloom rock, is getting older. He started the band in 1976, when he was 17. He's now 41.
"I've spent almost 25 years touring," he said. "I'm surprised I'm still doing it. I really want to stay at home more."
The Cure's latest tour, also expected to be the last, makes a stop at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on Sunday.
The band will play the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Everyone in the band is convinced this is the last major world tour we're going to do," Smith said.
"Whether or not it's the last album - it's a good way to stop."
One of the most successful "underground" acts of the 1980s, the Cure popularized goth rock before it became huge.
Led by the moody and capricious Smith, the Cure specialized in slow, layered, gloomy dirges, with an occasional quirky, upbeat pop song thrown into the mix.
Smith made white face makeup, blood-red lipstick and teased black hair his trademarks. He still wears the stuff on stage.
"I liken it to warpaint. I find it pretty much impossible to go on without makeup. But offstage, I don't go out with it on anymore."
SMITH ON THE '80S
Unlike many of their '80s contemporaries, the Cure endures.
They've bucked obsolescence (think Kajagoogoo) and remain popular. In fact, the Cure's 1990s albums have sold better than their 1980s works.
"The'80s to me - they don't mean anything," Smith said. "In England, we think of the'80s in terms of the Thatcher era and the music that went with it. At the start of the'80s, we had the Psych Furs and Joy Division. That mutated into the Human League. Then it ended with Nirvana. Then we had Spandau Ballet - that was awful.
"It's hard to say what the'80s sound was. It's too simplistic to lump it all together. It's too long a period for anyone to sum up what happened culturally."
THE EASY CURE
The band originally called itself the Easy Cure, a high school group from Crawley, Sussex. Smith dropped "Easy" from the name, thinking it "too hippie-ish."
The Cure's first hit was "Killing An Arab," which was rereleased in February 1979. The song, inspired by Albert Camus' novel "The Stranger," caused some controversy when it reappeared on the mid-1980s best-of album, "Standing On a Beach." Opponents said it encouraged anti-Arab sentiments.
"Standing on a Beach" set the stage for "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me," released in 1987. The double album was a hit in Great Britain and the States, producing the hits "Why Can't I Be You?," "Just Like Heaven" and "Hot, Hot, Hot!!!"
Through the years, the Cure faced personnel problems: Smith had a penchant for firing people.
A couple years and band members later, the band released "Disintegration," which spawned their biggest American hit, "Lovesong," which reached No. 2 on the charts.
After a hiatus and rumors of a breakup, the Cure released "Wish" in 1992. The album included the hits "High" and the curiously perky "Friday I'm in Love."
Several years and band members later, the Cure re-emerged with "Wild Mood Swings" in 1996.
ANOTHER WORLD AWAY
"Bloodflowers" was released in February. The album builds on the Cure's strengths: long, luxurious instrumental lead-ins, and dark, moody lyrics. The album has been touted as the final chapter of a trilogy that started with "Pornography" and "Disintegration."
"I'd lump it in with the more emotional side of what the Cure does," Smith said. "Lyrically, we're doing something that means something. Musically as well, the way it's structured, with slow, long intros, it's mood music. It's like another world away from some of the early stuff."
Two sources inspired the title: a Wilfred Owen poem describing a soldier's wound opening "like a flower of blood"; and a book of letters by Edvard Munch, in which a character who constantly painted versions of the same work was "plucking a flower of blood from his heart."
"In a way, I'm always writing the same song," Smith said. "I like the destructive image of a bullet wound, then a beautiful, constructive image. It kind of means nothing and everything. The notion of the two ends - the sense that flowers die, but new flowers grow."
As for the future, Smith says the band might do a date with Germany's Hanover Symphony Orchestra, à la Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony. Then, he plans to record a solo album.
"I started doing that at the start of last year. I'm going to go back to that and finish that off. I'm not going to be bothered with playing it live."
Smith hopes to finish the album by Christmas and release it early next year.
"It's not the kind of album that'll be played a lot on the radio. They're pieces that are not verse-chorus-verse-chorus. They're not pieces of music in the serious, mainstream way. I'm going to do something that isn't called 'the Cure.' And I've never done that before."
(Thanks Nicole)
"The Cure splits - Smith goes solo
Official sources confirm that The Cure is going to split. The band is doing a world tour with their last album Bloodflowers, and this time it will be the final one. The Cure will never play together again.
The main reason they are breaking up is that frontman Robert Smith wants to do a solo-album in his carreer plan. This album is said to be finished already, but there are no plans for touring at this moment. Smith says that, in the last 25 years, he was almost never at home."

"Just wanted to let you know that in this month's issue of Jane magazine (summer). There is a reference to The Cure. On page 34, they are interviewing actress Dolores Chaplin (one of the grandchildren of Charlie Chaplin)and she said she looked like Robert Smith & listened to them all the time."

"the last update for the official The Mission website, contains a "current favourites" page by every member of the band... Wayne Hussey is asked about who his favourite guitarist is and he mentions 3. One of them is Robert Smith as well as Jimmy Page and Tom Verlaine..."

"It was a week or two ago that I happened to be listening to NPR (the show was Fresh Air), and they were interviewing one of the writers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They were talking about a bar scene with Sarah Michelle Gellar and then played a sound clip of it. I was shocked and very pleased to hear that it was the recent show in which they played the Cure! : )!"

"I am glad to tell you that yesterday I was thrilled when two local internet newspapers published interviews where Robert Smiths says the band will come to SouthAmerica in August or September. The band plans to tour in Peru, Brazil, Argentina and Chile.

"This is in reference to the soundtrack of the "Psycho" remake soundtrack and NOT "American Psycho": Recently, I purchased the soundtrack to the remake version of the film "Psycho", featuring Pet Shop Boys and Rob Zombie's "Living Dead Girl" (which also appears on The Crow:Salvation and Bride of Chucky.) In the credits (which are in alphabetical order), Robert Smith is thanked. I have no idea what Robert could have done to contribute to the project, but I'd be interested in knowing. The soundtrack was released on Geffen Records (Siouxsie's label) and features the musical score of Danny Elfman who also scored Tim Burton films such as Batman."

"During the build up to the FA Cup Final in England, ITV interviewed Aston Villa's Garath Southgate. All the way through the interview they played Pictures Of You in the background."
"Just to let you all know that The Cure are still being played on mainstream TV in the England, despite the fact that many here too easily ignore a great band. During the build up to the FA Cup final this Saturday just gone, ITV were doing snippets on the managers and 'key' players when, all of a sudden, Pictures of You comes on. It has to be said this was by far the highlight of a terrible game. Thought you might like to know!!!"

This is from Michael Coppell the Australian promoter for the Dream Tour. He knows anything before anybody:
"Dear Fuji,
The Cure have decided not to tour here in July as had been proposed
and there is no time period in mind as they
stop touring in Europe on July 2.
The earliest alternative tour period here would be late October,
but it will take some time to assess if this is a real
possibility or not.
Regards,
Michael"

THE CURE TO GET VEGAS 'CHIP' NAMED AFTER THEM
The Cure kicked off their sold out tour Thursday night (5/18) in Atlanta's
Lakewood Theatre. They head to Miami
on Saturday 5/20, and to New Orleans for two shows on 5/22, and 5/23.
But the group is really anxious to roll into
Las Vegas for Memorial Day weekend. After selling out The Joint
at the Hard Rock Hotel for their 5/27 show,
the group was elated to hear that the casino designed a gaming chip
in their honor. The customized 'Cure' chip will
be made available to fans and high rollers the day of the show.
With Bruce Springsteen also playing Vegas that
same weekend, what are the odds of a secret summit ala The Rat Pack
between Robert Smith and The Boss?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The cure calls it quits*do you have your tickets to their last concert?
With a career that has spanned nearly 25
years and 13 albums, Robert Smith of The Cure announced that he plans to
pull the plug on a band that is heading
toward decay. The frontman said in the May
19th edition of USA Today that he had every intention on making
their latest album, Bloodflowers, their last. Bloodflowers is the last
in a trilogy series that includes 1982's
Pornography and 1989's Disintegration. Smith believes that Bloodflowers
is the best record The Cure has made in
ten years.
Although the band appears still vibrant, Robert said that he would
rather walk away while the band is still good. "I
want it to leave people with a good lasting memory," he says. The
Cure's farewell tour makes a stop here in Salt
Lake City on June 4th at 8:00 p.m. at the E Center. The tour has already
sold out venues in Los Angeles and Las
Vegas. Salt Lake City is the band's second to last stop on the west coast
leg of the tour.

"Hi my name is fede. Last week (sorry I am a bit late!) coming
back from italy where I saw two magnificent
concerts (rome and florence) I met on the plane back to london Robert
and Simon. Not many words to describe
the whole thing...
It could not have had a better gift, one you really remember for the
rest of your life: they are incredibly nice and friendly and so down to
earth I could hardly believe what was happening...they made me feel very
comfortable and
it felt like I had know them for ages. Been upset for a week,
now getting back to reality...
I just would like the world to know what a splendid person Robert is..."

"Yesterday, I went to a huge fair in the city of Osnabrueck to see The Bates playing for no money. The Bates have done a quite successful cover version of Michael Jacksons Billy Jean some years ago. At the end of their show they played a cover version of The Wailing Wall. I was very surprised and maybe the only one who recognised it...?!"

"While watching Blast from the Past last night, I caught a Cure poster from the WMS era where the family's elevator is. I believe it was the scene where they are unloading the truck into the bomb shelter. It's on the left hand wall behind everything. It's hard to see and real quick! But it shows Robert in a teal shirt with a flower. I was impressed that I caught the details."

"I went to Fridays tonight for my birthday (May 15). Right as I sat down, "Just Like Heaven" came on. I was so happy! It would've been cool to hear "Friday I'm In Love", but that would've been a little too obvious. "

"They are from Norway (as am I) and yesterday a newspaper ran this story along with a statement from the band (Lokomotiv not The Cure). They are some kind of rock band (obviously) but I don't know much about them. They have a homepage at : http://www.lokomotiv.bizland.com "
(Thanks Henning)
"I read this in today's newspapers. both the national paper vg and the local sarpborg paper sa have been reporting it. the norwegian band lokomotiv are to support the cure on most of the us leg of the dream tour, starting may 28th in la and going through the last concert on june 20th in new york.
since the autumn, lokomotiv have been staying in the us trying to get a record deal. now they originally were to have a holiday and start the recording of their new album, but when they got asked about supporting the cure they just couldn't say no. a manager for the group was looking for an unknown band who deserved to get the chance of opening for the cure, and some sources came up with the name lokomotiv. "

"I just got back from a show from pasadena. There was this band called Blame that played "there is no if", and "just like heaven". But, i was really impressed because they sounded so much like the cure including the keyboards and the 12-string acoustic that looked just like Robert's. I spoke to band after the show and they said that they did a cover of 39 for the Pink Pig tribute. I was so happy that i heard "there is no if", and I' m hoping that the Cure will play when they come to L.A."
(Thanks AdoreChick)
"I'm not sure is this old news but I was watching a movie called 'Dead Man's Curve' and actor Matthew Lillard asked "What music does depressed people listen to?" and the Doctor says "The Cure". Then they go to a music store and buy a Cure album and a Joy Division album too."

Basically, any station on our previous list for the 'Maybe Someday' Support The Singles campaign, will probably get the new single as well. So you know what to do. Look at the list, find your local station, call them and ask them to play 'Out Of This World' and thank them for playing it. You might also want to mention the Dream Tour if there is a show in your area, and hopefully, they will promote it on the air when they play 'OOTW'. Remember, it benefits all of us if the US shows are packed, noisy and a bit crazy. If we want shows like on the European Dream Tour, we're going to have to earn it. : )
"On Wednesday night, Dallas-Ft. Worth station Merge 93.3, played Out of this World on their Insert or Delete promo. This is just the standard promo where fans call in and decide if they want it added to the rotation. I sped home to make the call, and was absolutely impressed that the fans voted to Insert it by a 9-1 margin!!! It has not officially been added to the rotation yet, but hopefully before the concert on the 25th!"

Hopefully, this will turn out to be an error on the part of Pollstar, just like the No Doubt error on the Jones Beach website. However, they could just be "2nd stage" performers and not a true opening act (see next story).

5/20/00 - West Palm Beach, Fl. : "our band "Since The Accident" will be playing in the mars tent before the cure go on stage. If you're going to be at the show, please come and see us. for more info e-mail us at: Monkeysta@aol.com "
5/25/00 - Dallas, Tx. : "It has just been announced that a Dallas band, Captain Audio, will be playing the second stage at 6:30 p.m. at Starplex before the Cure takes the main stage. The second stage is located in the area where t-shirts are sold and before you actually enter the seating area.
The following is opinion only: Captain Audio is a three piece that can be described as somewhat spacey, slighty experimental, and sometimes into themselves a bit much. When one reads the local music rags, one gets the feeling that Captain Audio can do no wrong, i. e. they are the ultimate critic darlings. Check out their site www.captainaudio.com for more information."

"I submitted a question to billboard for fun cause i figured they would never respond and this is what i discovered today:
The Cure's Disappearing Act
Keith,
What on earth has happened to the Cure's latest release "Bloodflowers"? It seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth.
I love this record and feel that it has been overlooked. Can you tell me what number it is on the chart and how many units it has shifted?
Nicole domond@gocalcar.com
Hi Nicole,
The Cure's latest Elektra set, "Bloodflowers" has moved 211,000 units, according to SoundScan. The band's 13th studio album debuted and peaked at No. 16 on The Billboard 200 in March. The album has not appeared on the chart since the April 22 issue.
The first song from the album to be serviced to radio, "Maybe Someday," peaked at No. 10 on Billboard'sModern Rock Tracks chart in February. The next track to be worked from the opus, "Out Of This World," was just recently sent to radio.
The band's U.S. tour begins May 18 in Atlanta and concludes in New York on Aug. 20. For further information, visit the Cure's official web site at www.thecure.com.

"VH1 is running a program called 'Video Killed the Radio Star.' It's an hour long and shows the evolution of music videos. Exactly 23 minutes into the program they show a small snippet of 'The Caterpillar,' 'Lovecats' and 'Inbetween Days' videos both directed by Tim Pope. The narrator said "the Cure known for their zany viedeos..." This piece is only about a minute long. I have already seen this show twice today so I'm sure it will be repeated all week!"

"On American TV, on one of the Spanish channels, there's this soap opera called "Muneca Brava" on which they keep playing Cure songs on the background. "On german Television they have a Daily Soap called "Forbidden Love" and in todays episode they played "The Last Day Of Summer" at the main location - a pub called "No Limits" ... There is definately a Cure fan working there because they also played "Mint Car" several times during some episodes in 1996.
(Thanks Benny & Hooky)
"This morning (Sunday) on French TV TF1's 'Auto-Moto' motor sports program, they played the intro of 'watching me fall' as background music of one of their report. They also played the intro of 'the last day of summer' again at the end of the program as it seems they have chosen it as jingle for their weekly competition. They have been playing several new Cure songs for the last few weeks so I hope they'll keep on doing it."

"Today (Saturday) on Vh1's Rock and Roll Jeopardy, under the topic Rocking Through the week, the question was name The Cure's surprisingly happy pop song from 1992. The contestant answered Monday I'm in Love. Now we all know its Friday I'm in Love. Needless to say she lost."

- If he had had the choice, the single for the album would have been...Watching Me Fall !!! Robert explained that he had managed to edit down the song to 6 minutes but "they" (I guess he means "the record company") said it was too long.
- The first single from Bloodflowers will be Out Of This World. Robert expects it to have no success at all (as a single) but also says that it's no problem for him because it's the music that Cure fans want to hear.
- He also mentioned that The Cure had recorded a couple of "more up-tempo, more kind of single" tracks for Bloodflowers but he refused to put them on the album because he didn't want to spoil it with singles. Besides, he added that the album doesn't need to have a hit-single to be good.
- He sincerely considers Bloodflowers as the best album ever recorded by The Cure but also thinks that it won't be the most successful one.
- For him, the best five Cure albums are Pornography, Disintegration, Wish, Wild Mood Swings and Bloodflowers.
- He's very happy to now have a life out of the Cure.
- His next project is his solo album. About it, he said that this album will have no vocals, no drums and no bass on it. He won't release it under the name of the Cure because it has nothing in common with the Cure's music and he doesn't want to use the band's name only to make money.
- After the solo album, he may decide to continue alone or to work again with the Cure. He gives himself two years to make his decision.
The radio station played a few Cure tracks : Just Like Heaven, Why Can't I be You?, Lullaby, Out Of This World and the cover of Close To Me by French singer M.

"Just thought I'd send along a story of something that happened to me a couple days ago: RollingStone magazine was at our college campus doing a Rock and Roll Jeopardy type quiz show where students participated.. If the students don't know the answer, then they let members of the audience answer for prizes. Well, one of the questions was something like "Which recent oscar winning movie took its name from an old Cure song?". Of course, this being Buffalo, the silence among the contestants was deafening, so he called it out to the audience and I won a t-shirt ("Boys Don't Cry", of course).. He also made a comment along the lines of "I'd be suprised if someone wearing so much black DIDN'T know a Cure song". "

The next day I saw it still in it's location on the floor of the car and, curious, decided to see what sort of free crap had been passed my way. It turns out it was a poster celebrating 15 years of Spin Magazine with all (i presume) of the covers including two with Robert as the cover boy."

"In this months Q magazine The Cure's 'Seventeen Seconds' has been voted 65th best all time British album. The top 3 were Exile On Main Street by The Stones, OK Computer by Radiohead and top spot was Revolver by The Beatles. The voters were the writers for Q magazine. There's also a picture of the sleeve of each album and this caption for The Cure:
"Though this was The Cure's second album, it was the first over which Robert Smith took complete control; he co-produced it at London's Morgan studios, oversaw the blurry artwork, and wouldn't let label boss Chris Parry hear anything until the mixing stage. The result; a clean, contemplative, at times desolate guitar record that may not have screamed, "English commuter belt!" Like the fridge and vacuum cleaner of the first album's sleeve but nonetheles tapped into a peculiarly suburban paranoia. It even put The Cure on Top Of The Pops, thanks to the hypnotic A Forest, with which their career as Goth ambassadors was launched.
Evocative moment: 0.28 intro Secrets. Smith's double-tracked vocals sound like he's duetting with the ghost of a dead child. "

"on the government tv station SBS, here in australia, the ads for an upcoming documentary (Tales From The Oklahoma Land Runs!!) have a looped sample from 'The Blood' (off 'The Head On The Door') in the background. Certainly an obscure track and a bizarre placement!!"

"Theres a new documentary about the Sex Pistols making the rounds called the Filth & the Fury which, during the record label bidding war sequence, has footage of a very young (and horribly dressed) Chris Parry on the phone! Its from when he worked at Polydor- pre-Cure, pre-Fiction, pre-Siousxie & the Banshees even! Its pretty funny. He wears his sunglasses around the office. Theres some early footage of Siousxie, Billy Idol & Shane McGowan too."

"I've just started to work at Burlington Coat Factory, the station they listen to plays a cure song almost everday between 2:00 and 4:00. So far i have heard Friday I'm in Love, Just Like Heaven, Lovesong and Lovecats. Its just enough to get me through the rest of the day, though I would love to hear something besides the top 40 hits."
