  • For everyone going to the RAH show tomorrow, make sure you get there on time, as The Cure should be starting around 7:30-7:45. No opening act, just an evening with The Cure. And don't forget the pre-show meetup at the Queen's Arms. Hope everyone has a great time!

  • If it is a joke, someone needs to explain to BRAT/DM that April Fools Day is on April 1st, not March 29th:

  • "I'd like to say that a year ago April Fool joke started on depechemode.com on 29 March :-). we just talk about it on polish depeche mode forum and
that's how I know about it.
they do it every year. anyway, now when I linked "new" covers of PTA on forum it's more than obvious for us that this is joke."

Looking at the DM site, I did see that their 2004 joke was posted on March 31st and then updated on April 1st. So I think we can expect to see an "update" about this on saturday

Update: They finally updated again and confirmed it was an April Fools joke.

    (Thanks Grzesiek)

  • More RAH tickets available:

  • "I have cure tickets I want to get rid of, but I need to send them now!  From Chicago to UK.  Anybody want them?

  • Robert vs "Mister Feathers/Tubby Goth":

  • From Depeche Mode.com

Robert Smith takes legal action against Anton Corbijn
    post date: March 29th, 2006
We are getting preliminary reports that Robert Smith (lead singer of The Cure) is looking to stop further production of the album "Playing The
Angel". It is said, through sources, that Robert has a concern that the "Mister Feathers" character that Anton Corbijn created for the "Playing
The Angel" cover bears more than a passing resemblance to the cover for The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry" single.

Some of the e-mails this morning have insisted that this has to be an April Fools joke. I would really love to think so too, but there's a problem with that theory...it isn't April 1st.

Update: The 'Playing The Angel' page on the DM website has altered the cover of the album by sort of scratching out "Mister Feathers/Tubby Goth" and by placing an X over him on the 'Precious' single cover.

Update: 99.9% sure this is an early April Fools joke.

  • Another Bloodflowers necklace on ebay.

  • (Thanks Ben)

  • Curespotting:

  • From Salt Lake City Weekly

The Dresden Dolls continue their own fashionable revolution with Yes, Virginia.
"It’s not like the Cure in the ’80s when everyone who went to one of the group’s shows had Robert Smith’s hair,” he says. “Yeah, there are kids who show up in bowler hats and makeup. But there’s also a surprising diversity in our crowd. We get everyone from teenagers to 30-something parents. And they’re not dressed up by any means."

    (Thanks Tempest)

    March 28th

  • Cure cover:

  • "Last night I went to see Aqualung who was opening for David Gray at the Paramount Theater in Oakland.  I wasn't too thrilled about seeing David
Gray, but I was pleasantly surprised by the last song.  He did a lovely cover of Friday I'm in Love."

    (Thanks Kirsten)

  • Curespotting:

  • From Rolling Stone:

Ben Harper Both Sides of the Gun (Virgin)

"Standouts in this half include "Waiting for You," which has the deliberate melodic and linguistic urgency of Big Star's Third, and the dejected "Pictures in a Frame," which anatomizes romantic trouble with some of the horrible conclusions of the Cure's "Pictures of You."

Editors The Back Room (The Fader/Kitchenware)
"Editors are four likely lads from Birmingham, England, who've become darlings of the British rock press thanks to a seductive, thoroughly English sound and a wardrobe that evokes Robert Smith shopping at the Gap. "

    From PopMatters:

    FILM SCHOOL
12 March 1006: The Mercury Lounge — New York

Heartbreak, loss, missed chances, and betrayal are all frequent themes in Film School-Land. Lead singer/guitarist Krayg Burton channels a younger, thinner Robert Smith (think "Lovesong" days), singing with an endearing honesty. Distant, dreamy-sounding guitars, haunting, eerie melodies, and bittersweet vocals all evoke further comparisons to the Cure, but Film School doesn't quite hit the same heights of joy and despair.

    From Straight:

Scientists ditch jobs for rock ‘n’ roll life
“Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt” surfs a mammoth Peter Hook–inspired bass line, “Inaction” is the song the Strokes have spent the past four years trying to come up with, and “Can’t Lose” suggests that Murray has spent more than one evening studying the guitar work of the Cure’s Robert Smith.

    From The Boston Herald:

For ’80s-sounding rockers, it’s pretty in punk
Mimicry may not be the kindest word for what stellastarr* does, but there’s really no way around the fact that singer Shawn Christensen invokes The Cure’s Robert Smith every time he opens his mouth.

    From Fort Worth Weekly:

    The Color of May
The tiny church organ that shifts gears over the small, skipping Casio beat on the intro to “Waiting in Your Shadow” is pure floor-filling Cure. Spivey is almost as tortured as Robert Smith, but not nearly as whiny: “Well, he took your smile,” Spivey sings. “So here is mine / Take your time with this / I hardly ever use it.”

    (Thanks Tempest)

  • Nicci has a warning about the RAH tickets:

  • "If anybody has ordered more than 4 tickets from the RAH website, BE WARNED!

I called RAH yesterday with a general enquiry as to the whereabouts of my tickets (I had booked 7 tickets on my credit card - for friends
coming from overseas). They informed me over the phone nonchalantly that they had cancelled 3 of my tickets. They have the no-more-than-4-tickets-percredit-card rule, but failed to inform me (or stop me from buying more) when I placed the original order. Not to mention that they failed to tell me anyway, until I rang them yesterday (I would have found out on the night itself!). They said they would reimburse me for the 3 tickets, but will not reimburse me for the booking fee (£4 per ticket, £12 in total).

I received my credit card bill yesterday and noticed that they have charged all 7 tickets.

Luckily I was able to convince them to hold the 3 tickets so a friend could call them with the reference number and book them on her credit card.

This is a warning to all those people who have booked more than 4 tickets with RAH - avoid getting surprised on the night and give them a call now. I will be writing an official letter of complaint to them (as they broke a legal contract by taking my money and then cancelling) - if you have any similar stories relating to this with RAH please email me as it will make our case stronger."

    (Thanks Nicci)

  • And don't forget the RAH pre-show meetup:

  • "Can you post this as the place most of us are meeting up in before the RAH show, all welcome from early afternoon!!

  • Morrissey doesn't hate Robert:

  • "Morrissey was quizzed on Robert Smith yesterday as part of an interview in front of an audience as part of the SXSW. Shock horror- he was quite
    nice about him!

    Here's what he said-

On Robert Smith: “Certain people seem to think I don't like him. I'm not crazy about him but I don't mind him. He cuts a reasonably original figure which is good enough these days.”

He also revealed that The Smiths have turned down millions in offers to reform. The most recent offer was 5 million for this year's Coachella show!

    (Thanks Simon)

  • Curespotting:

  • "C.R.A.Z.Y

It's a story of two love affairs. A father's love for his five sons. And one son's love for his father, a love so strong it compels him to live a lie. That son is Zac Beaulieu, born on the 25th of December 1960, different from all his brothers, but desperate to fit in. During the next 20 years, life takes Zac on a surprising and unexpected journey that ultimately leads him to accept his true nature and, even more importantly, leads his father to love him for who he really is. A mystical fable about a modern-day Christ-like figure, "C.R.A.Z.Y" exudes the beauty, the poetry and the madness of the human spirit in all its contradictions.

Valle's film C.R.A.Z.Y. won 10 awards at the 26th Annual Genie Awards in Toronto Monday, March 13, 2006.

Soundtrack during the sixties and the seventies : Space Oddity : Bowie, Pink Floyd, Sympathy for the devil : Rolling Stones... and at the end of the movie it’s the beginning of the New Wave. We can hear 10:15 saturday night by The Cure."

    (Thanks Pascal)

Also, a few weeks ago I saw a clip of a commercial for the Cure's Royal Albert Hall performance.  I only saw part of it before I realized what it was, but I haven't seen it since."

    (Thanks Kallie)

"My curespotting: during the 2 weeks of the winter olympics, the USA network aired the curling competition from 5am. to 8am. every morning.
the music they used when they'd go to commercial was the cure's "lovesong".  they even used the cure's version, not some muzak version. "

    (Thanks Stacie)

"I've just seen this morning on a french tv a video clip from a new french band called VEGASTAR ,one of the guitar player was wearing a CURE T-shirt from boys don't cry !"

  • (Thanks Tempest)

  • Cure cover:

  • Katie Melua - I Cried For You / Just Like Heaven review

"Katie paints a raw and poignant picture of grief on her self-penned love song 'I Cried For You'. The stripped down production allows Katie's effortless and haunting vocals to shine through on this exquisite ballad.

On the AA side Katie delivers an emotionally taut performance of the 1987 Cure hit 'Just Like Heaven' which has received the seal of approval from Robert Smith and was recorded as the theme tune for the new DreamWorks film of the same name starring Reece Witherspoon. The film opened in America in September going straight to number 1 at the Box Office and will open across Europe in December 2005. "

  • Curespotting:

  • "Found this while reading CNN.com

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/03/10/leisure.binladen.reut/index.html

Article entitled "Bin Laden niece to star in reality show"

"Based in New York, Dufour has been promoting herself as a musician...She cites U2, Depeche Mode, The Cure and The Cranberries among her musical influences."

    (Thanks Sam, Chris, Tom, Kevin,
    Luigi, Lee, Rich)

"The DVD for the movie "Just Like Heaven" has a gag alternate ending which segues into the song "Boy's Don't Cry."

    (Thanks Christian)

    From SFGate

"I'm compiling a list of my most memorable music moments of 2006. Right at the top of that list is the Lovemakers' Valentine's Day show at the Great American Music Hall, when, for their encore, the East Bay foursome pulled from its retro repertoire a dead-on cover of the spooky Cure classic "A Forest" that would have had black streaks of joy running down Robert Smith's powdered cheeks."

    (Thanks Tempest)

"In My CD Player: Devon Allman

The Cure, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me: "This album is so amazing for so many reasons. It is straight-up one of the sexiest records ever, and it makes me feel good. Plus, I really think that Robert Smith is an underrated guitarist. His technique on the song 'Hot Hot Hot' is so pimp."

    (Thanks Tempest)

Crawley's newest acts take chart by storm

"Paul and the other band members continued what is becoming a Crawley tradition by making a successful music career after attending St Wilfrid's, much like the town's other success story Robert Smith and The Cure."

    (Thanks Tempest)

    From SFGate

Bay Area band the Moore Brothers release their new CD, 'Murdered by the Moore Brothers'

"But with both songwriters, the influences that inform their aesthetic are a lot more varied than you might expect. "There are obvious ones, like Glenn Tilbrook from Squeeze," Greg acknowledged. "Buy my favorite singers are women -- Joni Mitchell, Elizabeth Frazier, Astrud Gilberto, Paula Frazer. I also like Robert Smith from the Cure, and Prince -- singers who don't hold back, who put themselves out there. Thom would give you a totally different list."

    (Thanks Tempest)

    March 4th

  • An update from Ideal Copy on the US release of 'Never Enough':

  • "We've just received word that the release date is March 2006, not necessarily March 1st, as some retailers were reporting.  So, we have changed our release date to March 14th for now - hopefully it will arrive before then, but there is a possibility it may not be until the end of the month.

  • Curespotting:

  • "From the San Francisco Chronicle -

    The New Rock Classics

The Cure, "Disintegration" (1989) OK, so the band sold "Pictures of You" to Kodak for a cheesy TV commercial. Robert Smith has been creating some of the most unique, honest, soul-bearing, rip-your-heart-out rock for more than 30 years. "Disintegration" has got it all."

    (Thanks Tempest)

"Somebody at PC Magazine (or maybe the Vista team at MSFT) is a Cure fan.  This is from a review of the latest Windows Vista Beta.

    "From The Independent -

    Jason Donovan: Fallen idol

In music, his heroes were not throwaway pop stars but alternative figureheads such as New Order's Bernard Sumner and The Cure's Robert Smith. The credibility he so desired for himself, though, would remain forever out of reach."
