  • The Eagle Vision website has now confirmed that the image I posted 2 days ago IS the official DVD cover art. They also list a May 20th release date. And just so there's no confusion, the dvd will be released in PAL or NTSC, depending upon the region.
  • (Thanks Aaron, Chris and Andre)

  • Cure cover:
  • "I just picked up the lateset compilation CD from the metal label Roadrunner Records. It's called "The Heart of Roadrunner Records". The band Chimaira does a cover of Fascination Street. It's very heavy and worth a listen. "

    (Thanks Amber)

  • Curespotting:
  • "One curespotting and a follow-up to the Charlotte Martin one.

Somebody in México City's Metro (the subway) must like the Cure. There's usually some easy-listening or popular music coming throught the sound system, while one waits for the subway or changes direction. But it's not usual to listen not only to one, but to four Cure songs. When I listened to "one more time" I simply thought I was lucky, right before I got on the subway. But when I got down (from the green line) and changed direction (to the pink line), I recognized "boys don't cry", "let's go to bed" and "round and round and round".

Something more about Charlotte Martin, this time, taken from her website (http://www.charlottemartin.com): "Among her more interesting idiosyncrasies are a fascination with drag queens and a love of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Also worth noting are her two pet turtles, one of which is named for The Cure's Robert Smith."

    (Thanks Leonardo)

"In this week's n.m.e there is an article on the south-by-south-west music conference/showcase. i quote:

"Stellastarr* are the best band NME has seen all day. Frontman Shawn Christiansen has a MOVE AWAY FROM THE FREAK!, could-dribble-at-any-moment intensity that all good frontment should. If interpol= joy division + a good tailor, Stellastarr* equate to the Cure's Robert Smith going back to 1982 in a time machine, killing Bernard Sumner and replacing him in New Order. Well, that's at least what their best song, 'My Coco', sounds like".

they sound pretty cool, this stellastarr*!

all this 2 or so weeks after hot hot heat (who NME love) were compared quite favourably to the cure. makes a change from the pisstaking or general igorance of recent years"."

    (Thanks Dom.)

"Monday night, 24 March, I was watching a documentary-fiction, "Il mestiere di vivere- Residence Bastoggi", on Italian Tv, Rai3. About 11.55 p.m. they sent, like a foundation melody for some scene of the film, "Friday I'm in love"! Lovely!"

    (Thanks Francesca)

  • The Cure head into the studio in July:
  • "From July on The Cure are on their way to the studio. It is to be questioned, whether the choice of their new producer is to push them to harder sounds: Ross Robinson, whose home is Nu-Metal and who already pushed Slipknot and Limp Bizkit, wants to produce the upcoming three albums with Robert Smith and his band. Robinson declared, that The Cure had been one of his favourite bands for years. Headbanger's Delight.

The Cure begeben sich ab Juli wieder ins Studio. Robinson erklärte, The Cure seien jahrelang eine seiner Lieblingsbands gewesen. Headbanger's Delight."

  • Cure covers:
  • "I saw yesterday on canadian television a cover of "The Lovecats" by a band called S.T.A.R.S and that's awful ! It seems like the Spice Girls ! How the band can let this sort of things, they need money ? I'm joking of course."

    (Thanks Yan)

"I don't know whether you already know, but there is a great german dancehall and reggae band called "Seeed" - they and some other reggae artists took the rhythm from The Cure's "Close to Me" and created a fantastic Reggae-Song called "Release". It's really nice and worth listenig (allthough I couldn't imagine this mixture it works, really!). You can get more informations at www.seeed.de just search for "Cure-Riddim". Have fun and enjoy!!!! "

    (Thanks Silke)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Today (3/25/03) in between periods of the Wild Vs Red Wings game, a video of the Wilds playoff clinching win was shown and "WANT" was playing in the background! Hockey & the Cure what a combo!"

    (Thanks Apparition)

"Last week, on Polish PolSat channel, in a very popular TV quiz called 'Awantura o kase', (where three teams bid for questions (knowing only their category) there was a very difficult question. The team that bought the question wanted to buy a hint - usually 10-20% of the bid. In this case the hint cost almost 50%. The question was 'Who is - and give the name&surname - the singer of The Cure'. That expensive hint contained: Michael Hutchinson, Robert Smith and two completely unknown guys. At this time the team shouted 'Robert Smith'!"

    (Thanks Tais)

"Jane Magazine - April 2003 mentions that those who worship "Robert Smith, God of Rock" will be so happy because dark makeup around the eyes is back in (as if it ever left)."

  • Curespotting:
  • "A heavy-metal magazine would be the unlikeliest place to find not one, but five references to The Cure, but that’s what happens in the latest issue of Revolver (http://revolvermag.com), which has Marilyn Manson on the cover, in two of their features in their “Men in Black” dossier.

In “The History of Goth Metal” (p. 66-70), in the body of the text, recalling the early years of goth, it’s said that: “The same year that ‘Bela Lugosi’is Dead” came out, another British band called The Cure released their debut album, Boys Don’t Cry. Bridging the gap between goth’s morbid angst and the poppy punk of bands like the Buzzcocks, the album forshadowed the future work of what would become one of the most succesful bands of the Eighties and Nineties. Not only would the Cure prove to be one of goth’s few mainstream exports, lead singer Robert Smith pioneered the scene’s look with his explosive shock of black hair, porcelain complexion, smudged lipstick, and eyes ringed with eyeliner.”

At the end of the next paragraph, which deals with the Batcave: “Everyone from [Robert] Smith to Ian Atsbury of goth band the Southern Death Cult (later the Cult) hung out at the club [the Batcave], watching death-rockers like Specimen and Alien Sex Fiend.”

Pornography is included among the “13 Essential Goth Records”, saying that: “The first in the Cure’s goth trilogy (followed by 1989’s Disintegration and 2000’s Bloodlfowers), this is one of the saddest albums of all time. Over his band’s bleak, ethereal accompaniment, Robert Smith wails such self-flagellating lyrics as ‘I laughed in the mirror for the first time in a year’ (‘The Figurehead’).

The next feature in “Men in Black” is an interview with AFI (p. 72-76). Describing their sound, the writer says: “But AFI have not abandoned those trademark big, melodic choruses so redolent of SoCal punk’s ‘testosterone glee club’ sing-alongs. Nor has [Davey] Havok lost his penchant for segueing between episodes of grand mal yowling and passages of Robert Smith vulnerability.” Among his musical influences, Havok mentions: “It wasn’t only punk rock and hardcore that were into, either. We were listening to stuff like Ministry and Nitzer Ebb as well as Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Slayer, and the darker British bands like Joy Division, the Cure, and Bauhaus.”

There’s another reference to The Cure, this time in Women Who Rock (http://www.womenwhorockmag.com), but I didn’t buy it, so I can’t quote verbatim. On a feature of the female musicians to look for this year, the brief interview and bio of Charlotte Martin begins with: “If Kate Bush and Robert Smith [of the Cure] had a child, and she played piano, it would be me."

    (Thanks Leonardo)

    "taken from www.gardenofdreams.com

    lead vocalist Gene:

Musical Influences: The Cure, Human Drama, Ashes, Danny Elfman, The Smiths, Neil Diamond, Leonard Cohen

Favorite Band Of All Time: The Cure / The Smiths

    bass player Jameson:

Musical Influences: The Cure, Siousxie and The Banshees, Duran Duran, Prince, Nine Inch Nails, Poe, VAST, Rasputina. A lot of 80's and early 90's synth-pop. Most music that could be classified as Ethereal.

Favorite Band Of All Time: The Cure or Poe"

  • I have no idea why The Cure website was down over the last few days, but it's up again.

  • Curespotting:
  • "I have to send this in as the strangest Curespotting I've seen yet. In the local coverage of the recovery of Elizabeth Smart, there is a photo of the apartment where she stayed briefly, and on the wall in the background you can clearly see a big poster of Robert and Siouxie. http://tv.ksl.com/index.php?nid=84&sid=13751 (bottom photo)

    (Thanks Heron and Mark)

"In the new April 2003 Blender, their cover story is "the 500 CD's You Must Own Before You Die!" As fate would have it, the Cure have made the list with Greatest Hits (Elektra 2001). The blurb: Eighteen songs over 23 years, from the post-punk benchmark ("Boys Don't Cry") and Eurodisco ("The Walk") to melancholy passion plays ("Lovesong") and '90's hits ("Friday I'm In Love"), this is the perfect introduction to Robert Smith and the Cure's pop mopery. Standout track: "Just Like Heaven."

    (Thanks Rust)

"In the french rolling stone magazine (march) there is a top 100 of the alternative albums that changed rock history. I was having a look at the 3 or 4 pages of it especially the 2 last ones but didnt see any cure albums..... Of course !!! their first album (3 imaginary boys) was in 3rd place !!!! can you beleive it ??

1st is "nevermind" Nirvana, and the second is "nevermind (again?) the bollocks" sex pistols. The fourth one is "unknown pleasures" from joy division."

    (Thanks Philippe)

  • For everyone who has asked, no, I haven't heard from anyone who was able to get a copy of the Rock Masters dvd last week. It would seem that a shipment of the dvds were mistakenly sent to a Tower Records warehouse and were then listed as being in stock, with Tower even preparing a 4 day sale for them. When the mistake was discovered, Image immediately asked for the shipment to be sent back to them, and now the title is once again in limbo. Don't look for it to be released any time soon, if ever.

  • Eagle Vision now says they do not have a firm release date set for the Trilogy dvd, as it is still in production.
  • (Thanks Sean C.)

  • Cure invited to play in Latin America:
  • "CIE (Corporación Interamericana de Entretenimiento), a mexican company (http://www.cie-mexico.com.mx), is in charge of organizing music events in Latin America, especially Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and others... Boris Rosenblit, one of the producers, mentioned at some news media that "invitations have been made and we are waiting confirmations" referring to music artists who don't want to tour on Europe or Asia because of the security issues with the Iraq war. The list of probable artists coming to Latin America this year are "Christina Aguilera, Santana, R.E.M., Pearl Jam and The Cure" This info was taken from Clarín newspaper at http://www.clarin.com/diario/hoy/um/m-525156.htm on March 3rd 2003."

    (Thanks Adeline)

  • Cure cover:
  • "I am LVG and i find recently a cover of The Cure made by a Punk Band called "Beatsteaks". The song is "Just Like Heaven" and made out in 2002 on an EP called "Wohnzimmer"."

    (Thanks Ludovic)

  • Curespotting:
  • "MTV Brasil, trying to be different from all the other TV channels during the Carnival, is showing a "Top 500" stuff with videos being played non-stop during the 4 days (no VJs, just videos and a few breaks). Cure scored #50 with Inbetween Days and probably JLH also appears somewhere in the list too. Top 3 positions were:

    #3 - Beastie Boys - Sabotage (huh?)

#2 - Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody (but of course!)

#1 - Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (which has the same beginning as Wrong Number!)"

    (Thanks BACO)
