    (Thanks David)

  • (Thanks Jason)

  • Cure cover:
  • "Recently, while reviewing cd's for the college station I DJ at, I came across a various artist CD with a Cure cover. The cd is called "Lunch with A Bouncing Space, Vol. II", and the band Lenola cover the song "Catch". It's more of a "rocking" version than what our beloved Cure perform, but a good version nonetheless. You can check the band out at www.phillymusic.com/lenola, and you can check out the A Bouncing Space records site at www.members.freespeech.org/abouncingspace."

    (Thanks Brandon)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Hey I was watching the TV show Grounded For Life and I saw a reference to the cure. The episode revolved around homosexuality and the grandfather character was talking to his two sons, he says to one I couldn't see you being gay then he turns to the other son and says but you... the second son says come on dad it was the eighties.. right then they do a flashback.. the second son looks like Robert Smith!.. black teased hair, huge white shirt, and some silly black makeup.. and during this they played inbetween days... I thought it was cute."

(Thanks Stacey, Milky, Josh, Genaro and Summer)

"an unlikely robert smith sighting: http://www.rc.umd.edu/praxis/contemporary/stein/stein.html

    paragraph 1, last sentence."

    (Thanks James)

"I saw a programme on one of our five terrestial channels in the UK. BBC1 featured a programme called "When shoulderpads ruled the world", mainly about 80s music bands and TV. The Cure came in during the "Who shot JR ?" feature from the American soap "Dallas". The start of A Forest and continued for a good 2mins up to Robert singing. I don't think Robert would want to be assoicated with such an item but I'm sure the royalty cheque helps all the same. "

    (Thanks Steve)

    March 26th

  • Billboard has picked up on the festival news (ignore that bit about the microsite, it's been dead for awhile now):
  • "The Cure has begun lining up appearances at summer European festivals, with slots at the Arvika Festival (July 11 m Arvika, Sweden), the Zillo Festival (July 13 in Berlin), and the Woodstage Festival (July 14 in Glauchau, Germany) confirmed so far. The veteran U.K. rock act has not released a studio album since 2000's "Bloodflowers," but last year issued the "Greatest Hits" album and home video, featuring 16 favorites and two new songs.

Elektra's microsite for the project features exclusive sound and video clips, as well as lyrics and other goodies. The Cure's own official Web site says the microsite will eventually be home to "quite a lot more [exclusives] over the next couple of weeks."

  • Curespotting:
  • "Last week the latest issue of La Mosca ( http://www.lamosca.com.mx/mosca.htm ) appeared in newstands in México and Robert Smith is on the cover. The title is "The Cure: Robert Smith's Worst Nightmare". There are only two articles: "The Cure: ni apocalípticos ni desintegrados" (Neither apocallyptics nor disintigrated") is an overview of the groups career; and "Disintegration" is given a retrospective review in the "The New Classical Music" section. The latter is little more interesting.

And this might not be recent news, but I came across a very interesting article about The Cure and "Killing an Arab" in "Expression in Pop-rock music: A Collection of Critical and Analytical Essays" (ed. Walter Everett; Garland Publishing Inc., New York and London, 2000). Ellie M. Hisama's contribution, "From L'Étranger to Killing an Arab: Representing the Other in a Cure Song". The essay starts with the 1986 controversy, and goes on the analyze the song's criticism of Camus' novel, and the interaction of lyrics and music. "

    (Thanks Leonardo)

Has anyone else heard this or have more info on it?

    (Thanks Beck)

  • Curespotting:
  • "From the 18 March 2002 New Yorker magazine in an article about Japanese teen fashion crazes comes this paragraph:

"Because the Japanese are fanatical about fashion in the way that the Brazilians are about soccer or the Germans are about cleanliness, walking around Tokyo can feel like being trapped in an endless Halloween party where everyone but you has as a member of the Beastie Boys, the Cure, or TLC"

    (Thanks Bevon)

"The Cure is mentioned in Splendid Magazine's review of "Sleeping Stars" by a Chicago band called Garden of Dreams:

"the feel that pervades this disc overall is of a slightly less-downcast Cure .... with their tone knobs turned up. The same lushness of sound -- heavy bass, propulsive drums, jangle-guitar and wafty synth..."

    March 18th

  • The official site was updated again over the weekend, and this time they took down all of the festival info. This does NOT mean that the proposed festival tour is canceled. I'll update the situation as soon as I can.

"During a blind test in a quite popular and intelligent show here in France called "Tout le monde en parle" ("Everyone talks about that"), the game was to find artists with something special about their hairs. The Cure (I don't know why) was in the list with 'The Carterpillar'. "

  • Keep voting for 'Just Say Yes' :
  • "Cure-Fans did a great job voting for Just Say Yes at German music channel Viva Plus! Just Say Yes ended as #3 (out of 50 titles) beating many mainstream-acts. The funny thing is that Viva Plus wanted to show the video - but they couldn't, because they DON'T HAVE IT by now! They showed Cut Here instead and promised to show the right video tomorrow.

But Just Say Yes is still on the list for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. So keep on voting! Go to http://www.vivaplus.tv/topten.html or send an eMail with your request to topten@vivaplus.tv .

The daily top 10 will always be shown at 10 pm. Currently Just Say Yes is #1 in the voting for Tuesday!"

  • Wondering what Chris Parry is up to now that Fiction is history? Here's the story from Stuff :
  • Back to Nature

    08 March 2002

The band behind New Zealand's top song may be heading into the studio for the first time in more than 30 years.

The Fourmyula will make their first public appearance in three decades tomorrow night, at Upper Hutt's Concert In The Park, playing No 1 hit Nature for the first time ever in New Zealand.

Last year the Wayne Mason-penned song topped a poll by the Australasian Performing Rights Association (Apra).

Yesterday, all five members of the band gathered at Mason's home in Paekakariki to iron out a few kinks. Drummer Chris Parry, who scaled the heights of the British music industry after Fourmyula broke up, is spending time back in New Zealand, and guitarist Martin Hope has returned from Australia for the show.

Bass player Alistair Richardson and vocalist Carl Evensen still live in the Hutt Valley.

The band last played together at a private function for Parry's birthday in 1999, but Mason said the first practice session had gone well.

"It takes a little bit to get going but after that we settle down and get used to each other and it's great," Mason said. And a recording session is on the cards. "We're toying with the idea of going into the studio and doing a new song, which would really be a lot of fun. That would really try you out, and see how you still work as a band. We still have all the characteristics of what we used to be, so that would be really interesting."

The Fourmyula had a string of hits in the 1960s and recorded Nature before leaving for England in 1969.

"Because it's an acoustic song, we never really played it on stage. We were a fairly loud rock band."

Parry hit the big time in Britain, discovering the hugely popular Jam for Polygram, before signing superstars The Cure to his own Fiction record label. He's been the least active member performance-wise but is confident the band will make the grade.

"It (drumming) is a little bit like riding a bike. You might ride it badly but you can still ride!"

Family Concert in the Park, 5pm, Saturday, Harcourt Park. Entry free, donations to the Life Flight Trust.

    (Thanks Richard)

  • Curespotting:
  • "There's an article about Weezer's new album online, in where some of the vocals are compared to Robert Smith! Here's the quote:

"Death and Destruction" is a soulful ballad that opens with heartfelt McCartney-esque vocals and builds with long, strung out guitar chords. And "Slob" is an aching track comprising a ringing arpeggio and whiny, painstricken vocals reminiscent of the Cure's Robert Smith.

Here's the link to the full story in case you're intereseted:

    http://www.vh1.com/thewire/content/news/1452781.jhtml"

    (Thanks Zach)

"

    (Thanks Richard)

"I recently downloaded a Comet Cursor program, which has all kinds of little icons you can use to replace your mouse arrow. Under the "rock star" category, among icons of Limp Bizkit and Aron Carter, there is a Robert icon!"

    (Thanks Melanie)

  • "I picked up a depeche mode biography in chapters the other day. it seemed like a good read, since the band was involved apparently, so i flipped to the credits and la-di-da, what did i find??? i see "the information in this book was taken from interviews with (among others) perry balmonte, and daryl balmonte."

    (Thanks Chris of Cure-nius)

  • Curespotting:
  • "The March/April 2002 issue of the Utne Reader has a tiny Robert Smith reference in a column about Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill. Author Andy Steiner writes about Kathleen: "To a girl growing up in a small Midwestern town, rock music mostly seemed like a guy thing. Sure, Prince had the ambiguously silent Wendy and Lisa, Morrissey was as sensitive as any woman, and the Cure's Robert Smith wore lipstick..."

Also spent the weekend downloading some old MP3s. Barcelona has a cute lyric about Robert in their song - Studio Hair Gel - "Your hair looks like Robert Smith's, brings to mind the word obsessed." This song is from 1999, so this isn't really news. "

    (Thanks Phlox)

"On mtv here in belgium last week-end was 80's-90's week-end and they showed the "Lullaby video" as a 1989 video. Ok! but they said it was on the Kiss me, Kiss me, Kiss me album! I don't think so."

    (Thanks Dav)

"I was looking for any sites that may have some Diablo II downloads and came across DiabloII.com. • By the way, The Cure are alive and well, and are all busy with various projects. As soon as I can provide more details I will.

  • Since everyone is e-mailing me about this, I might as well mention it for those who don't know. Siouxsie & the Banshees have reunited and are playing a handful of shows. Please check thecreatures.com for more info.

  • Curespotting:
  • "The austrian radio station FM4 is playing Cut Here now almost every day. The DJs allways make coments like "Robert Smith is still heart broken" or that The Cure are "professionally depressed". Yesterday Heinz Reich said "even if I expose myself as the uncoolest guy at FM 4, i have to admit, that Robert Smith´s voice still touches me", and he was refering to his teenage years. And quite a time ago there was a short report on ARTE-TV about rock stars who are into advertising now, like Iggy Pop or Duran Duran. And they asked, if The Cure will be advertising for make-up soon. "

    (Thanks Bianca)

"This is an official announcement from Shakira's (the columbian Britney) hompage:

Then came a Grammy and two Latin Grammys, the key TV appearances, the brave new world of Shakira, the star. Shakira is a walking, living, breathing, singing contradiction. "I was born and raised in Colombia, but I listened to bands like Led Zeppelin, the Cure, the Police, the Beatles and Nirvana," said Shakira. "I was so in love with that rock sound but at the same time because my father is of l00% Lebanese descent, I am devoted to Arabic tastes and sounds. Somehow I'm a fusion of all of those passions and my music is a fusion of elements that I can make coexist in the same place, in one song."

and here's what Lisa Jewell writes in her debut novel "Ralph Party" (bestselling debut in uk):

page 22: "Ralph stepped further into her room ... impressed with her taste in music, like his, still stuck somewhere in 1979:the Jam, Madness, the Cure ...." "

    (Thanks Patrick)

  • Ok, this isn't Cure related at all, but I try to help out whenever I can with stuff like this and I know we have quite a few readers in Argentina:
  • "I was wondering if you could do me a huge favour. I'm working on a media analysis of Argentina. I have to interview a few people about their media environment and Argentina's principal means of mass communication. I was wondering if you could put a little blurb up on the site so people who'd want to talk could contact me. I'd truly appreciate it.
