  • Terra has a new interview with Robert that took place before the 2nd show in Madrid. Robert talks about the 1st night setlist, why this tour will be different from others, another Cure album and more. Also, they have a clip of Robert saying hello to all of the visitors to Terra, and a review of the show.
  • (Thanks Jorge)

  • Despite previous reports, the only French shows that are sold out are both nights in Paris. All other shows still have tickets available. This has been a problem for us over the last few weeks, as we continue to get wild reports of certain shows selling out in 10 minutes and such, which when we check, turn out to be false. As of this moment, the only US shows that seem to be sold out are the Greek show on May 31st and San Diego. Check the Dream Tour page for all current info on what type of seats are left.

  • Bloodflowers chart news:

  • Another report on the Lo + Plus show yesterday:
  • "Have nothing to add to the two first reviews, Just add that it was very funny and that Robert always look shy, specially when he knows nothing about the inteviewers and he's afraid of having to have a shower in public. Finally add that the interviewers gave the two musicians (Tomatito, who is very famous here for being the guitar player with Camaron de la Isla for a long time before he died, and Michel Camilo, a couple of Bloodflowers cds and then gave Robert a copy of their new cd Spain. Then Tomatito said he would take Robert to a good flamenco party, as he expressed this desire to them. I had a great time watching it.

There's a tv program on Catalan channel Canal 33 named Sputnik, where they did a couple of qestions about The Cure and you could win a copy of Bloodflowers on vinyl. I won one."

    (Thanks David)

  • There is apparently some sort of fan documentary in the works. The whole "Cure Freak" angle turns me off immediately, but if you're interested:
  • Attention all cure fans (freaks)…

Is your room/house/living environment wallpapered with cure posters? Does your bed have cure sheets, cure blankets and cure pillows? On your night table, does there sit a cure alarm clock that wakes you up every morning to your favorite cure song? Do you sleep in cure pajamas, have a jacket with the cure painted on the back, and never leave the house without a cure shirt/ cure boxers and cure socks on? Is the cupboard in your kitchen filled with mugs/ glasses/ plates with pictures of the cure all over them? Does your car have personalized cure plates of your favorite song and is the back bumper filled with cure stickers? If you can answer yes to 3 of these questions then we need your help. We are looking for Cure FREAKS in their environments to possibly take part in a documentary all about cure fans. If interested please email me at s0mecandy@yahoo.com, subject: cure freaks"

    (Thanks Natalie)

  • Curespotting:
  • "While visiting Boston (I am from St. Louis), I entered a store that sold antiques from India and other areas in the far east. In the corner, there sat a 20-something gentlemen dressed entirely in black with very Robert-esque hair playing a sitar while his friends played the tabla. I perused around the store and was about to leave when I heard quite possibly the most beautiful sound come out of a sitar. The first man began to play the first few notes of "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" and continued with it. A bit later his friend joined in, creating quite possibly the third best version of the song I've ever heard (the first two being the actual song, and the song performed live). It was beautiful, simply beautiful."

    (Thanks Doug)

"I was reading through the brand new May issue of Alternative Press and saw a couple of Cure references:

Jason Navarro, singer of The Suicide Machines, had an interesting answer when asked "What's your favorite heartbreak song?" "Most of the stuff by The Cure pretty much depresses me. Anything off of Pornography is particularly depressing. I don't want to give any girl out there the satisfaction of knowing she broke my heart. The only girl I'm worried about now is my wife." pgs 18-19

Also, Tony Kanal of No Doubt had the following to say: AP: Who are your influences? TK: ...Simon Gallup from the Cure, for his sense of melody. AP: How would you describe your style? TK: ...I played a five-string for the first time, using the extra low B, and playing a Cure-style bass line on "Home Now." AP: Favorite bass line? TK: Anything by the Cure. pg. 48"

    (Thanks Kristi)

    March 29th

  • We have a few reports from Robert's appearance on Spanish tv show Lo + Plus:
  • "Tonight at 8:00 P.M. (Europe hour) Robert has been interviewed on LO + PLUS. You must notice that this is not a music especialized show. They interview significant artists, writers, sometimes also politicians or sport players. The general tone of the show is very good. The two interviewers are always in a very good mood, asking intelligent and amusing questions, but without disturbing the interviewed.

Robert looked great, not too tired. He wore a nice red shirt. The interview was a bit difficult at the beginning, because Robert did not completely understand the humour involved in some of the questions. It was not his fault, it always happen when they interview someone who does not speak Spanish. Afterwards the whole thing got much better and the result was a funny interview. The most interesting thing was when they asked Robert "Do you feel tense with silence?". Robert immediately said "No". Then the interviewers kept silence for about half a minute. Finally Robert smiled and said "It´s the perfect interview". At the end, they interviewed Flamenco guitar player Tomatito and jazz pianist Michel Camilo together with Robert. You can see the three of them in the photos I attach. Tomatito played the guitar for Robert.

The whole thing was worth seeing."

    (Thanks Sergio)

"I´ve just watched it, as i taped it on video ( but it started recording a bit later cos it was programmed, buagh, ). Robert was very shy and seems a little "afraid" about the interviewers ( they really are a bit stupids always ). As the "best" questions they asked about the loudest sound idea ( the pair robert watched at beach and that he talk about in the song ) and the incredible setlist of Madrid 1st show ( a note the interviewers received from the cure prayer club presidents that were there). There was, of course a lot of cure fans, if they weren´t all, as public. Althought robert was a bit afraid about interviewers and the fucking typical questions about the look, drink, and goths, he was sometimes really funny making a lot of jokes. He talked about being reading now a book about genetics and prefering listenning classic music at home. After ,a flamenco player and i think hispanamerican pianist played a song ( they have made a new record ) and then they added to the interview. They asked robert about etnical music and he said he likes it a lot and that he has a sittar at home, and that he should put the red point inbetween the eyes ( as indian or indus, don´t know how you name them ) to play it but that he couldn´t cos he would ended with the red point somewhere around his head ,a joke about being drunk ( well, now you have to start laughing, well this was my little joke ). He talked about loving seeing other people playing instruments and he beeing and spectator. Well that was all i remember. It wasn´t the best interview robert had in his life but for me it was really great to see him at a spanish channel.

    (Thanks Birdmadboy)

"I know it is not very complete but I'll have to watch it a few more times:

THE CANAL + PROGRAM HAS just ended. they mentioned that he knew the kind of program it was from a webpage (this one!!!! but it was mentioned as "his webpage") and was afraid of them throwing water upon him...well as I told you they aren't very serious and spoke a lot between them HAVING ROBERT in front of them! I mean that they shold have asked a lot of things more. They asked topics like if this was the last album and tour, maintaining at the same style among years, BF atmospheres, all questions taken from the information in the Tentaciones interview... well I would like to post the whole answers because I don't WANT to write something Robert didn't say exactly. He acted as if he wasn't very comfortable but laughed at some points, shy at times. It was a 1 whole hour program, but at 20:30 Michel Camilo and Tomatito played a song and then joined them on the table to talk. they spoke to the couple and robert at the same time and Tomatito knew about Cure and said "las que monta Robert cuando viene" (Robert puts the whole thing upside down) and it was funny because Tomatito and Michel Camilo seemed to admire Robert too...It was great to see Robert talking so much and I think it was about fucking time he appeared on a program here in Spain.

(Thanks to Ale from ORIENT AMBULANCE)

  • There's a 4 page interview with Robert in the British issue of "Rock Sound" (march 2000). Robert talks about how happy he is with Bloodflowers, a potential solo album and even a film script! Here's part of the interview :
  • about the solo album: "The next record I make won't be with the Cure, it will be a solo album with no lyrics, only music. In fact I have already composed some pieces and shown them to the rest of the band who didn't like them at all. It's normal and I was already expecting it, because they are not exactly songs, but more a collection of sounds, a condensed version of textures. It's something which I have been thinking aboutfor a long time and it's impossible to mix it with the cure. I want to get down to working on it so I can record it next summer. If all goes well I hope you'll be able to get your hands on it in a year's time. The content is very depressing, featuring only a guitar, a cello and occasionally a piano. Something which, to give you an example, could sound like something from Nick Drake. It's very sad and not exactly how I feel at the moment, but connects more with my personality when I was twenty. I don't really know how to explain it, but iy seems to me as if I were another person, and this is partly what I like about these songs. With them, I don't feel as if I have to explain anything, only that they are musical fragmentswhich I like and find interesting to record."

and about writing a film script :"Last year I shut myself away at home and I spent hours watching recent films and thinking that most of them were rubbish. So I decided to get down to writing a film script. I thought I'd be able to write a good story and overcome all the garbage I'd had to put up with all this time; but then it dawned on me just how incredibly difficult it was to describe convincing characters and believable situations. I found writing difficult and, while I was thinking about how to continue with the film script, I thought of the music for the different scenes, always before I'd developed them. So I began to compose the sound-track of a film which will probably never get made. Maybe when the record comes out the sleeve notes will include some photos of how I'd like the film to be; or maybe I'll send the film to Tim Burton (laughter). The fact is that these pieces describe states of mind and situations experienced by a series of characters and this is the reason I feel distanced from these songs."

    (Thanks Sylvain)

  • Here's something that fans trying to get tickets for the Jones Beach show should be aware of:
  • "I'm not sure if anyone has tipped you off to this, but usually, tickets for the entire Coca-Cola concert series at Jones Beach goes on sale at the same time - in other words, Cure fans might be on line for tickets with fans of pretty much every other band on the planet. Sometimes they make exceptions, and sell certain shows early, but everyone should be forewarned..."

  • It seemed like it would never get here, but finally, the Dream Tour begins! Here's our 1st reports from the scene:
  • "The Cure's trucks arrived at La Riviera in Madrid yesterday evening at 10 minutes to 10 pm. I was there and talked with a roadie. He said that The Cure have rehearsed the tour in London and are only flying in today. The show will be held mostly in red and black, with a lot of projections and background films. However, as La Riviera is only a large club, the whole show will be seen the first time in Zaragoza when they go to arena-size. In La Riviera, they will "see what fits in"."

"A friend who stands outside of the "la Riviera" Concert Hall in Madrid told me via Mobile-Phone that the Cure have play'd these songs during the Soundcheck: Open, Play for today, the loudest Sound, like Cockatoos, Play for today, where the Birds always sing and the Soundcheck goes on. At this Moment Robert wasn't in the Hall he said."

    (Thanks Christian, ThisDream)

  • For fans in New Orleans, The Cure will be the featured artist on 106.7 The End today at noon, and they will be giving away tickets to the show.

  • Some news from the Czech Republic:
  • "the czech radio station evropa 2 will broadcast the prague show (april 12). i am not sure yet whether it will be live or not, but i'll let you know (as well as other details).

-slovak magazine televizia had a full page article about the cure under title "how to cure a depression" and it is very positive concerning both the band and bloodflowers.

-the other tv-oriented slovak magazine, markiza, also had an article, in which they say the cure is one of the best british bands ever, but they did not like bloodflowers too much (a "mixed" review)

-czech specialized magazine rock&pop has a positive (7 out of 10 points), but rather stupid review of bloodflowers, and also an article, which does not say anything new...and the author calls herself a cure fan!!!

-and finally: czech republic's business newspaper (sic!) had a very positive review of bloodflowers (which they chose as the only music item in the issue)!"

    (Thanks Alex)

  • Will The Cure play Bizarre 2000? :
  • "On the homepage of the Bizarre Festival (www.bizarre.de) you can vote per email for bands you'd like to see there. But as to our favourite band, this might not be necessary anymore ;). I called the agency, and they told me they were still negotiating ... and Cure were "on their list"! Up to now, they received confirmations from artists like Iggy Pop, Beck, Moby and Freundeskreis. So keep your fingers crossed! And please note, that this year, the Bizarre festival will take place at the Flughafen Niederrhein / Weeze (Kleve), not in Cologne anymore."

    (Thanks Nika)

  • According to the Dutch tour organizer, the Rotterdam show on april 19th is almost sold out, with only a few bad seats left at the second ring (with a side view to the stage).

    (Thanks Dennis, Andrzej, IrishCure)

  • Curespotting:
  • "They played 'Just Like Heaven' as the background music on a commercial for the Colorado Rockies radio show (the Rockies are our baseball team here in Denver). It was very absurd, almost ironic..."

    (Thanks Andrew)

"I was at a Bush show in Tampa and during soundcheck the bass technician was playing Killing an Arab. I talked to the singer(gavin) and drummer(robin) we were talking all about the cure and the drummer signed his name and under his name he put curefan. "

    March 25th

  • As the Dream Tour prepares to kickoff in Madrid, we begin our coverage with some reports from Spain:
  • "Robert will be interviewed on a spanish TV program called LO + PLUS on "Canal +" TV Channel next Tuesday at 20:00 (spanish time) the program is fine, robert will be answering funny questions and the hosts will possibly do something strange to amaze him...this program has a lot of history and is very popular here. It'll last between 15 minutes or half an hour.

-The Cure is the recommended tour this week in Tentaciones

-The Cure has appeared on many newspapers and magazines as if BF was a very important album, (very typical stuff really but good for business!)

-XTV, a music television station in Spain made a ESPECIAL THE CURE of half an hour with the Boys Don't Cry, Killing An Arab, Close To Me (remix), Just Like Heaven and Lullaby videos and they read a very brief cure history introducting the 2 parts (a very quick thing) BUT they played Out Of This World live (I think it was in Paris, but they didn't say where it was) it was recorded with only one camera and the sound wasn't produced. Well, they might have recorded it themselves with a BETACAM or something like that, though all this I enjoyed it as we haven't had any BF live images in Spain yet....they could possibly have a whole show, I don't know.

-www.terra.com has a 10 ticket prize (in a very easy contest) for every concert here and they are also giving promotional videos and Maybe Someday singles for eveyone that enters in their webpage. they also have an interview with RS in video but I wasn't able to watch it. As you know, they will webcast the first 30 minutes of the Madrid 27 concert..."

    (Thanks Ale)

And we have this word on ticket sales in Spain and France:

"it's becoming very difficult to find tickets for some concerts. For example in Barcelona, one can only buy tickets in a bank, using one's credit card (phone number : + 34 902 33 22 11). Sales are also going well in Lille and Strasbourg.

    (Thanks David)

Also, Lodz, Berlin, both shows in Madrid and both shows in Paris are now sold out. And ticket sales in the US have been very strong, with many of the venues only having lawn seats left.

We just want to remind everyone (especially those of you who are new to the site) that we will have full coverage of the Dream Tour in Europe, North America, the Summer Festivals and Australia & Japan (if they happen). For those of you who are new, we want to stress that yes, we do take ALL reviews. photos, etc. from fans. You don't have to be a COF regular or source to send something in and have it posted. If you've got a review, setlist, photos, ticket scans, tour merchandise descriptions/scans or anything else that you think would be of interest to everyone, by all means send it in.

We hope everyone is as excited about the tour as we are, and hope everyone makes it to as many shows as possible. This should be an emotional & magical tour, so start dreaming and have a great time!

  • There's a new interview with Robert in the current issue of Revolver agazine. It's a one page article and a full page photo of Robert. Robert also says that his five favorite Cure songs are Boys Don't Cry, A Forest, One Hundred Years, In Between Days, & The Same Deep Water As You.

Poland - "was 19th on Polish bestsellers' list by ZPAV in February with total sales of 9336 copies. It will probably jump up in March. Also, 'The Last Day Of Summer' is a promo SP released exclusively in Poland. It's now taking 13th place (jumped from 18) on sales/radio-playing/voting chart called '30 ton' (www.30ton.com.pl). This list is held and broadcasted every Sunday by Polish public TV. As there is no video for that song, when they play it in the show the 'Wrong Number' shots are in the background... Such mix looks quite funny. "

    (Thanks Dan, Nicole, Mietek)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Caught the opening strains of JLH tonight on Dateline. It was used as the trailer music for a segment on the show about 9 year old conjoined twin girls. Good story and glad that person at Dateline has such good taste in music. Too bad the little girls are totally in love with the Backstreet Boys, but who knows, maybe seeing that piece about themselves will make them want to know more about that really cool song that got used in their segment."

(Thanks Beachy, Jenny, Midnightt, Jewel & Diana, OPO)

"This morning (March 16) I was driving home and on the local hard rock station they play the Mancow morning show from 6-10am. He was playing Burn as he was returning from a commercial break. He had commented that he had watched the crow the night before and that was the reason for playing it.

    (Thanks Marshall)

"I was inside Galyan's in Leawood, KS this past saturday, and they played "Maybe Someday". I think it may have been some corporate music station being pumped in, because there wasn't any talk."

    (Thanks Bill)

  • "I just phoned Karsten Jahnke, the German promoter for The Cure, to order some more tickets. The man on the phone told me that the concerts are selling great and that they all are going to be very full. In my opinion, the biggest surprise is that the show in Oberhausen is almost sold out!! There are only a few seated (no tickets available for standing anymore!!) tickets left. The venue has a capacity of more than 12,000!! So, for those who want to go there, hurry up!!

    (Thanks Lars)

  • There will be a Cure Party in Russia:
  • "Close To Cure" fan-club (http://www.closetocure.csi.ru) and music club "Vermel" (http://www.vermel.ru) present The Cure Party in Moscow, Russia. It will take place on March 23, in "Vermel" at 21-00. You will hear the covers of Cure songs by the group "Tochka Rosy" and after that there'll be Cure DJ."

    (Thanks Goshmar and Disintegrator)

  • An update on Detroit and Denver: Detroit does not go on sale today. Tickets will be on sale next friday, March 24th. There is one problem with that, the NCAA midwest regionals will be going on at The Palace so they are putting the tickets on sale at Meadowbrook instead of The Palace. That will only affect those who want to buy tickets from the box office and not Ticketmaster.
  • Also, the Denver on-sale info was from KTCL and has now been confirmed by Fiddler's Green. The tickets will go on sale next saturday, March 25th.

    (Thanks Tony, Sara, Genevieve)

    March 16th

  • Rolling Stone, MTV and Ticketmaster Live Daily have reports on the Dream Tour.

  • We have some preliminary ticket info for Detroit and Denver:
  • According to an ad in the Metro Times, tickets for the June 10th show in Detroit go on sale tomorrow, March 17th. Don't know what time yet, but we are looking into it.

And we have an unconfirmed report that tickets for the June 5th show in Denver will go on sale next Saturday, March 25th. No other info is available at this time, but we will check into it and try to get some confirmation.

(Thanks Robert (contact him for info on the Detroit pre-show gathering) and Vince)

  • Well the Cure Ticket Alert mailing list has certainly been more popular than we ever anticipated! We are now up to 723 members! So far things have run pretty smoothly, with only minor glitches that we are aware of. If you've joined the list and have not received any of our alerts (there have been 4 so far), then please let us know. My apologies to those of you who received this morning's alert twice, it was my fault. Let us know if you are having any problems. Thanks for joining and we hope you are finding it useful & helpful.

  • Rolling Stone will be re-webcasting The Cure's Chicago show on March 22nd.

  • We have a report that The Cure will be in Holland on April 15th, because they are nominated for the TMF-Awards.We have no confirmation on this yet, nor do we know whether they would be presenters, perform live, etc.

"Hi there, i just had two very cool Cure spottings. In the Sherman Oaks/Studio City (CA) area, we have a cable company called Adelphi. On the digital cable there is a set of music stations called DMX. They have about 25 channels that play only music, no commercials, no videos-only music. I heard "Maybe Someday" on the Alternative Rock station and the Coffeehouse Rock station. I hear more Cure on the DMX than i do on KROQ, it's sad, but true."

    (Thanks Lissa)

"Quote taken from interview with swedish industrial metal band Misery Loves Co. in Terrorizer Magazine (UK):

"We've done a Cure cover this time. It's an old song called "The Drowning Man", and it has come out very well. The songs they wrote are so great that you can take them out of their context and fuck them up a little bit, and they're still great songs!".

The new album of Misery Loves Co. is called "Your Vision Was Never Mine To Share".

    (Thanks Peter)

  • PINK PIG: THE LOUDEST SOUND AVAILABLE FOR GRABS :
  • Hello,

We just got a cancellation for The Loudest Sound ... the person who reserved it won't be able to make it. This is not a good thing, as we're *really* tight with the time (the song has to be in our hands by March 30th). So if anybody thinks he/she will be able to record the cover and submit it within the established deadline, please drop us a line at pinkpigers@yahoo.com Remember that you can submit the cover as an mp3 file or by registered express mail (takes ~ 7 days) If you write, also include the following info

    - band name (if no band, your name). if band: members and isntruments they play.

    Thanks a lot!

    March 13th

  • Because we've had so many requests for ticket news and updates, and due to the surprise switch that Ticket master pulled over the weekend with Moutain View tickets, we have decided that the best and fastest way to get any ticket info to you would be to setup a small, private ticket alert mailing list. This will not be a list like Babble or Descent, just a way for us to mail out ticket info as soon as we get it. So if you would like to be added to our Ticket Alert list, simply send an e-mail to us at chainofflowers@compuserve.com with the subject of Cure Ticket Alert and we will add you to the list. And don't worry, we will not use this for anything other than ticket news, so you need not worry about us filling your mailbox everyday with news updates (and no advertising or spam either!). The only downside is that if you only want the info for Chicago, you will also get alerts for Los Angeles, Houston, Toronto, etc. Hopefully, everyone will find this useful and it should be quicker and easier for us to alert everyone of on-sale updates and changes.

  • News from Brazil:
  • "Bloodflowers was released only THIS week here....universal thought it would be better to wait until the end of the summer vacations (when almost everyone goes to the beach) and the end of the brazilian carnaval ( when almost everyone gets drunk and do stupid things). the best part is that the brazilian booklet is in color!

there is an interesting 2 page article with robert in the march issue of 89 REVISTA ROCK ( the official 89 FM mag.) where he talks about the inspiration for writting each of the new songs. also, there have been published positive reviews in newspaper and magazines all over the country.

Universal intends to do a release party here in my city. the place should be the OCIDENTE, a kind of pub with dance floor, where I'm DJ. so, if it really happens, will be a night to remember.

and last, I've been reading that the dream tour WILL come to brazil, but until now nothing has been confirmed."

  • The April 2000 issue of CMJ has Maybe Someday as Track 2 on their free CD. The CD cover reads:
  • THE CURE has made 20 albums in as many years – and Robert Smith intended Bloodflowers (Elektra), which contains “Maybe Someday,” to be the finale. “I think it’s apparent in the lyrics that when I wrote it, I intended it to be the last Cure album,” he told CMJ New Music Report. But Smith is changing his tune. “Since we’ve done it, I feel totally different about it,” he says. “I feel really good about the group.”

  • From the Atlanta Constitution:
  • HEALTHY LIVING: CURE'S 'GOOD ATTITUDE' IN VOGUE FOR 2 DECADES

    Atlanta Constitution - Tuesday, February 22, 2000

    By: Shane Harrison

IN CONCERT The Cure 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Sold out ($35). The Roxy, 3110 Roswell Road N.E. 404-233-7699. The concert will be Webcast at www.99X.com and simulcast on 99X (99.7 FM). An interview with the band will air about 5:30 p.m.

Despite having only three Top 40 hits in 20 years, the Cure's influence is far-reaching. Leader Robert Smith and his ever-changing band helped invent alternative rock.

"The mere fact that the Cure have managed to provide the soundtrack for almost two generations of the paint-it-black set suggests that Robert Smith's formula is a winner: cracked operatic vocals, shameless pop melodies and shimmering, melancholy arrangements with buried, echoey drums," notes Arion Berger in a Rolling Stone review of the band's latest album, "Bloodflowers."

The Cure, which plays the Roxy on Wednesday, gained a large fan base in the United States when the single "Just Like Heaven" hit the Top 40 in 1988; the group had debuted in the States nearly 10 years earlier with first album "Boys Don't Cry."

Jason Tarulli, 25, of Atlanta first saw the Cure in the early '90s. "I just connected with it,'' he says. ''Nobody beats the depth and intelligence of Robert Smith."

Tarulli was among the fans waiting at Tower Records in Buckhead when tickets for Wednesday's show went on sale. Standing about 10 bodies from the window on that overcast morning, he was certain he'd get tickets. Minutes later, the first person in line walked away with two tickets, and the show sold out. "I guess I'm off to listen to the radio," Tarulli said, hoping to win some of the tickets that station 99X is offering. The six-city, small-venue tour that brings the quintet to Atlanta is the band's idea.

"It allows us to explore," says Smith, 40. "It's more intense, and it gets us back to the reasons why we do it." He also admits that "there's no single on the new album. I really paid no attention to the commercial aspects. I felt that (the tour) was the only way to get the music out there. I wanted people to be aware of the album."

Critics, fans and Smith himself have noted that "Bloodflowers" has an air of finality. He says he doesn't feel the need to do another Cure album but doesn't discount the possibility and has plans for a solo project. Ultimately, he hopes to do music for films.

Smith certainly doesn't sound like a man who wants to stop.

"I had every intention of this being the last Cure album, but I've had so much fun doing this," he says. "I think if the young me met me now, he'd be OK with how things ended up. It surprises me that I still get so much pleasure from it."

If this does spell the end for the Cure, though, what would Smith like the band's epitaph to be? "I think what's important to me is the way we've done what we've done," he says. After a thoughtful moment, he declaims, epitaphlike, "They had a good attitude."

To hear selections from "Bloodflowers," dial 511 and enter 8600 and Soundline number 434. Each call costs 50 cents. TUESDAY'S GUIDE to MEDICINE and HEALTH CARE

  • "I was watching The Daily Show with John Stewart last night (3/9/00) and during the oscar clips for the best actress category they asked who was the no namer in the category and they had five options to match the face to the name and one of the five faces was of Robert Smith (during entreat years)... the rest were women... it was appalling and amusing at the sametime"

    (Thanks Sana)

"A tube of Robert's Smith's lipstick is featured in this month's 15th Anniversary Spin magazine (the one with four different covers). Different pieces of 'rock 'n roll memorabilia' is featured, and the lipstick has its own page amongst Bono's The Fly glasses, Perry Farell's corset, and Kurt Cobain's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" shirt. The page's caption is "Jane's 'Reddest'."

  • On the BFBS radio show 'A passion for plastic' (named after The Cure's song 'Plastic passion' by the way), dj Nick Ritchie chose 'Bloodflowers' as album of the week, and he played 4 tracks off of it: 'Bloodflowers', '39', 'Maybe Someday' and 'Where the birds always sing'.

  • A somewhat misleading article From the Danish newspaper BT (Saturday March 4, 2000):
  • THE CURE ARE STOPPING

Even though the Cure's latest album Bloodflowers has been received by a positive reviewing media, the group has announced that Bloodflowers will be their last album.

"I just feel that it would be good to stop, while we're ahead" says Robert Smith

Robert Smith is the only original member of the 21 year old band which again and again has threatened that it would stop.

So who knows..... maybe it's just an advertisement stunt to increase sales.

The article includes a photo of Robert Smith with guitar and the caption: ROBERT SMITH WHO IS THE ONLY ORIGINAL MEMBEROF THE 21 YEAR OLD BAND, WANTS TO STOP, WHILE THE CURE IS ON TOP.

    (Thanks Christoffer)

  • Remember that Dr. Martens book that was released last year? Here's a report on the Cure content that was included:
  • "AirWair Limited published a hard back book in 1999 depicting the role of Dr. Martens in the music industry and the book was available to subscribers of Alternative Press magazine. I just got my copy yesterday and there is a picture of The Cure performing live. The main focus of the picture is Simon, wearing a pair of boots. The caption reads: The Cure formed back in 1978, and although several of the key band members did not actually wear DM's - many preferred pointed suede boots or in Robert Smith's case, oversized tongues on white basketball boots - Simon Gallup frequently wore knee-high Docs."

    (Thanks Kristi)

  • From a journal entry on skateboard pro Tony Hawk's website:
  • Feb 19, 2000

"From there I went home and got ready for a concert that we were invited to. The Cure were playing a small club in L.A. and my friend Szuszanna does their promotions for Elektra so she invited us. E couldn't go because she had to get ready for our S.F. trip tomorrow (Charles Schulz's funeral), so Mort, Cathy and I drove up together listening to Staring at the Sea and Disintegration the whole way. The concert was good, but they mostly played stuff from their new album that just came out last week, so sing-alongs were out of the question. The older songs that they played were more obscure tracks like Hanging Garden and Disintegration and we were hoping for a more top-40 Cure concert. They still sounded great and everyone donned their appropriate black attire for the goth-fest. From there we went to an after party for the band where Cathy and Szu swore that the guy sitting across from us was Corey Feldman. Mort and I called full bull on this observation. Let's just say that if it was him, he has gone FULL GOTH in his appearance, complete with straight black hair and black-on-shiny-black gear. I can't think of him so far removed from his Goonies character, but we all evolve. We also saw my old friend Bon, formerly with Nitzer Ebb and now working with Marilyn Manson on a new album. We hung out and reminisced with Bon for a while, until the band finally arrived with a harem of women in tow. Robert still looks the same with smeared lipstick after all these years. We thanked Szuszanna and got back in the car for the 1.75-hour Hollywood-to-Carlsbad drive that I am way too familiar with these days. "

    (Thanks Mikez)

  • "Q101 in Chicago is doing a promotion called "March Music Madness" where 64 bands compete in a tournament similar to the NCAA basketball tournament. Listeners vote to choose the winners in each round. The Cure is set to take on Blur in the first round, and if they win, Oasis or Morrissey in the second round. Tournament voting has already begun, and voting for that particular match-up takes place from Friday 3/10 6:00pm (central) to Monday 3/13 6:00pm (central). You can also register to win a trip for two to the NCACA Final Four. Go team!!! Results for each round are announced weeknights at 6pm."

  • After all of the confusion, it looks like the Paris shows will go on as scheduled:
  • "Official confirmation : the Zénith reopens from March, 10th to June, 15th. After that, the concert hall will be closed until September so the new roof can be fixed. "

    (Thanks Jérôme)

    March 3rd

  • It seems like the Paris shows may be saved after all, keep your fingers crossed:
  • "it seems that the zenith security problems are due to some zealous person, and that the problems are tiny and quickly repairable (addition of 2 firemen, 3 extinguishers and few roof reinforcement), in view of the number of artists protests, the zenith could Re-open rather quickly, and " repairs " should be delayed until June."

    - 3 march ,french TV source

    (Thanks Blooh & Lolaby)

"some explanations heard on French TV channel TF1 tonight about the closing of the Zénith : Actually, the director of the Zénith wasn't forced by the commission of security of the prefecture to close the place. They just told him that he had to replace the canvas of the roof within 3 months. But he closed it anyway, just on the eve of a sold-out virtual concert of Elvis with his actual band (!). French promoters are scandalized, because the prefecture confirmed on wednesday that the Zénith could still be used for concerts if the direction just added 400 fire extinguishers and some firemen. (Just note that the prefecture of Paris is always hard on safety reasons... If the Zénith really had to be closed, they would have done it themselves). The direction of the place hasn't changed its mind for now... That's all i know."

    (Thanks Jérôme)

"According to an OFFICIAL source ("Eurotickets", organisation of car transport for concerts out of Belgium)the annulation or report of the concerts in Paris are only a RUMOURS !!!! They faxed today (3march 2000)a confirmation of the concerts at the Zénith of Paris"

    (Thanks Alexandre)

  • Spanish magazine Rock Sounds is giving away some free Cure stuff with their March issue:
  • "the album version of OOTW is on a free 10 track cd-sampler with more songs of Smashing Pumpkins, Yo la Tengo, etc.... the CD is being given away with the March Issue of a magazine called Rock Sounds

the magazine includes a poster with a Robert Photo with the tour dates and a review of the Paris concert. Also it puts Bloodflowers as the album of the month in the review pages. Although it puts 4 stars out of 5, the equal calification of "Shocking", the review is not very good (as a review) because it talks more of stupid things as coming back and cult band as everybody seems to think here in Spain. It's not worth translating it.

you may find them in this website: www.rock-sound.com "

    (Thanks ALe)

  • Pink Pig update:
  • BLOODFLOWERS OUTAKES: THE LAST STEP OF THE PINK PIG PROJECT ===========================================================

    Hey again piggies,

The last phase of the project has finally arrived...

As you know, the band released the name and lyrics of 3 songs that didn't make it to Bloodflowers: Spilt milk, Just say yes and You're so happy (you could kill me!). As you also know, the idea of Pink Pig is to include all the songs written and recorded by The Cure (at least that we know of). So the outakes have to be part of the set. And this is what we're going to do ...

    * SPILT MILK -----------

    - Can be downloaded from cd Now with the purchase of the album, and we hope it will also be available soon at the official site. In this case, then, people have access to the song, which means that doing a cover won't be a problem.

    - To reserve this song send an e-mail to pinkpig@interar.com.ar with the following info:

    Title: Spilt Milk

Body: your name, city and country of residence.

    - The song will be assigned on a first-comes-first serves basis.

    - After getting the confirmation mail from us, the person who got the song will have until March 30th to record and submit it

    * JUST SAY YES / YOU'RE SO HAPPY (YOU COULD KILL ME!) -----------------------------------------------------

    - Neither of these songs have been released .... the only thing we know about them is their lyrics.

    - So we thought we could get around this by asking people to compose the music based on the lyrics. We know that technically this is not a "cover", but more of a recreation or reinvention. But we think it will be fun to do something like this. It will be a special feature of the project ... sort of a puzzle for the fans to play with and put together using their imagination. We believe the results will be very cool ... and the boys will enjoy it :)

    - EVERYBODY is welcome to cover these two songs (including those who already took part in the project)

    - Reservations aren't required ... the only requirement is to SUBMIT THE COVER BY MARCH 30th. Submissions after this date won't be accepted.

    - When you're ready to submit your cover please contact us at pinkpig@interar.com.ar Covers can be submitted as mp3 or by registered mail (if you use mail, please remember they have to be here by March 30th, as the latest)

    - After getting all the songs we will choose the 2 that will make it to the set. However, all the covers received will be given to the band on a separate cd (that won't be part of the set .. only The Cure will have that bonus cd).

    - Please, don't feel intimidated if you don't have high tech gear or fancy recording equipment. The songs recorded at a studio will have the same chance to be chosen that the ones that were recorded using a Radio Shack recorder ... the decision will be taken based on the creativity used in the recreation of the songs, not on technical aspects. So give it a try!!! :)

Well... guess that's pretty much it. If you have a question send an e-mail to pinkpigers@yahoo.com

Please, check the News section of our website for updates

    http://usuarios.interar.com.ar/german/pinkpig/website/news.html

Thanks a lot! ... hope you have fun :)

Love Flor, German & Juan Jose

  • For those of you who ordered 'Bloodflowers' from CDNow as part of the 'Spilt Milk' promotion, I wanted to let you know that the link should be e-mailed to you soon. I got mine this morning and downloaded the song with only a couple of problems. 'Spilt Milk' runs 4:53 (5.5 mb download) and is certainly more upbeat than the rest of BF. Sounds like a Wish era b-side to me. Very good song, which does a nice job of showcasing Jason's drumming (very strong in my opinion).

  • Some news about the Paris rescheduling that is not official and has not been confirmed:

  • Seems that we all set a record with The Last Day of Summer:
  • Elektra Entertainment Group and AOL's Winamp Announce a Record Number of Secure Downloads of The Cure's Latest Single

    SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 29, 2000--

Over 58,000 Internet Music Listeners Download The Cure's "The Last Days of Summer"

Elektra Entertainment Group and America Online's Winamp, the world's most popular high fidelity audio player and music Web site, today announced that The Cure's "The Last Day of Summer" surpassed 58,000 unique secure downloads within one month of launching the world premiere of songs from the Cure's 20th album on Winamp and Spinner music services. This milestone represents the highest number of licenses issued for a digital song in a one-month period by Server-Side Technologies Inc.

Host to eight million visitors per month, Winamp.com and Spinner.com were the first music destinations to feature music from the Cure's highly anticipated new release, Bloodflowers, which has achieved one of the highest Billboard charting debuts in the bands 20-year history. Winamp.com offered a secure, time-release download of the "The Last Day of Summer" single as well as a convenient link to purchase the CD from Amazon.com where the Bloodflowers CD has risen to number six on the "Top Sellers" chart.

"This is concrete evidence that creating early, online awareness about a new release gets results, " stated Sylvia Rhone, Chairman and CEO of the Elektra Entertainment Group. "Our goal has always been to service our community of listeners, and Cure fans are a unique and special audience. This promotionwith Winamp and Spinner.com enabled us to give online users the unique opportunity to preview this long-awaited release,"

Also as part of this promotion, which ended yesterday, Spinner.com featured streaming audio of "Watching Me Fall" and other songs from Bloodflowers. Also on Spinner.com, Robert Smith and fellow band members created a playlist of more than 150 songs, including rare Cure gems (like eighties chart-toppers "Just Like Heaven" and "Why Can't I Be You") and songs that have influenced the band throughout its twenty-year career.

"With Winamp and Spinner.com and we're focused on giving listeners convenient, secure access to the music they want," said Josh Felser, General Manager of Spinner and Winamp. "As these results show, the Internet provides a convenient way for fans around the world to preview music from their favorite artists."

    (Thanks Deb)

  • Robert is on the cover of Request (April issue), the free magazine available at Sam Goody music stores. It's a 5 page article and has a section called "Decades of Doom," which is just a brief discography, but they put a stupid three word description for each album which contains "gloomy" in every single one. Also, 'Bloodflowers' is #20 at Sam Goody stores.
  • (Thanks Kalini)

  • Slovakian FUN RADIO will be having a Cure weekend starting Sat.
  • (Thanks Patrick & Martin)

  • We mentioned the Cure article in the March issue of NYLON, and here's something interesting that was mentioned in it:
  • "I just wanted to add that the Nylon article says that one of the new songs is based on an Ian Stone(sci-fi writer) novel, but I can't figure out which one. "

    (Thanks Sandi)

  • Robert was scheduled to do a telephone interview with Sacramento radio station KWOD 106.5 today during their mid-day show at 12 noon, but according to the station, Robert has an inner ear infection and had to cancel the interview. They say they will try to reschedule it for next week.
  • (Thanks Jane)

  • Some bad press from the NY Post:
  • "The NY Post had a blurb about Robert not going to the VIP room after the Roseland show and the title of the blurb was "no manners". It said that he just stayed in his room all night long by himself and did not go and make an appearance at the VIP area, which he was supposed to go to. Then it quoted someone saying that the concert wasn't any good anyway.

Not a flattering piece, especially since I have met him a few times as I know many people have and he has ALWAYS been extremely nice and friendly."

Perhaps the Post should stop to think that maybe Robert was tired or not feeling well, or simply didn't want to deal with the hassles of the "VIP Room" and all that would entail. Robert has always been very gracious and accommodating to fans. Take the next story for instance:

"I work at JFK airport (New York City) for Lufthansa German airlines. Today (the 29th) my shift ended at 9:30 PM and as I was walking through the lobby at terminal one, my colleague and I were coming back from a gate. I was walking starring at the floor as my colleague was talking to me. As we were passing in front of Virgin Atlantic (they fly to London) I lifted my head and I almost bumped into Robert Smith!!!! I was soo stunned being a big Curefan that I was almost speechless. Immediately I shook his hand and said it was a pleasure to meet him (I sounded like a dork). He was with Roger, I don't know where the rest of the guys were. I told him that I was one of the unfortunate ones not present at Roseland last night and he said "It's ok we'll be back again at Jones Beach" I responded by saying "yeah June 20th right" (from what I read on this site) and he started laughing saying that I knew more than he did. Anyway they gave me a band photo and Robert signed it for me. All I can say is that the man is mad cool!!!! I just wished I asked him a couple of more questions but I didn't want to be a nuisance. Anyway that's my Cure sighting and trust me it will last me a lifetime.

    (Thanks George)

  • Some reports from yesterday's Conan O'Brien taping:
  • "Just got back from the Conan taping. What a surprise, they did two songs, Maybe Someday and A Forest. ( I think everyone expected Just Like Heaven or Inbetween Days) They sounded GREAT. After the show was over, Robert and Perry came over to talk to the fans. Conan was long gone by that point. Robert was there at least 10 minutes because it took me that long to get close enough for him to sign my copy of Bloodflowers. He was very accommodating."

    (Thanks Tim)

"Cure played Maybe Sunday and a Forest. Were tired but stayed and did autographs after the show. They were great even if they didn't play as well as usual."

    (Thanks Simon)

"Wow. They played Maybe Someday and then played the show out with A Forest!!!!!!!!! But NBC didn't play the full song, though we got to hear all the lyrics - it faded out as they went into the instrumental portion after the final lyrics...... but gosh! what a surprise! And the audience was FULL of rabid Cure fans! Even the first guest, Melissa Joan Hart, came on the show ONLY cos she was trying to get tickets for the audience for Conan to see the Cure. Big Fan. Everything took a back seat to the guys and it ROCKED! It was really wonderful to hear/see A Forest played on TV. "

    (Thanks Peter)

  • From MTV:
  • Robert Smith On New Single, The Cure's Future The Cure's Robert Smith

The Cure has returned with "Bloodflowers," the band's first album since 1996's "Wild Mood Swings," and there's been talk that the new record might be the swan song in The Cure's 24-year career.

But then again, maybe not. In 1982, frontman Robert Smith declared that "Pornography" would be the Brits' final record. The band went on to produce seven more albums, including the 1989 landmark "Disintegration."

Based on the U.S. success of "Bloodflowers," which sold some 71,000 copies in its first week in stores (see "Santana Stays On Top As The Cure Hits Chart"), the band might be considering sticking around for a little while longer.

In a recent interview with the MTV Radio Network, Smith talked about the rather open-ended nature of its so-called final album, a subject he addresses on the new LP's first single, "Maybe Someday."

"Well, it's the only song on the album that's really about the end of the band," Smith told the MTV Radio Network. "And because I've been saying that ['Bloodflowers'] is, like, the last Cure record, people are interpreting a lot of the songs on the record as being about that, but they're not.

"'Maybe Someday' is the only one that's specific. It's the only one that's about how the others [in the band] react to me saying, 'This is it,' and they don't believe me 'cause whenever I say 'Never,' it means 'Maybe.'

"So it's just that. It's also about the reaction, as I was saying earlier, that we've been getting. There's a part of me that thinks, 'Well, how could I possibly want to stop doing [The Cure], because it's a fantastic thing to do,' and 'Maybe Someday' is that [feeling] in a song." [RealAudio]

The Cure will serve as the musical guests for NBC's "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" on February 29 and will launch a European tour on March 27 in Madrid, Spain.

    (Thanks Richard)

  • One of the most widely seen Curespottings ever reported:
  • "On Tuesday's episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," (on the WB) "Watching Me Fall" was played during a hot and heavy scene between Buffy and her arch-rival, Spike. Let me tell you, that song worked quite well in promoting a sensual mood to the scene."

"Watching Me Fall" was featured as background music on tonight's episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". It could be prominently heard playing in the Bronze while Faith (in Buffy's body) was teasing Spike. You'll probably get this one submitted a hundred times. Somehow, it seems like Buffy is kind of a Cure-fan show. "

" 'Watching Me Fall' was playing in the background during a scene in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' (2/29/00 episode on the WB).

The episode was written and directed by series creator Joss Whedon. Perfect use of the song, too...the mood was just right (in The Bronze, smokey dance club), during a particularly sex-charged confrontation..."

(Thanks Kenneth, David, Brad, Melanie, Rainier, Jacob, Marc, Suzanne, Curegirl1316, Trevnutz, Bret, Marco, Jane)

  • And one more Curespotting:
  • "I was watching the new Air video Eating, Sleeping, and Playing (french techno group) and one of the men (not Nicholas, the other one) talks about how the Cure was one of his favorite bands in high school."

    (Thanks Sandi)
