After the brilliant start up of the Dream tour,
I wondered how to top the gig of yesterday. Indeed it´s hard to beat
a set with "siamese twins", "all cats are
grey", "drowning man" etc.. First of all I want to point out, that the
band
improved playing a lot. Especially 100 years
turned out fantastic and "39" is getting more dynamic as well. I also
enjoyed "Where the birds always sing" and
"the loudest sound" - which are great songs, both, on CD and on
stage!
Well, what else should I say about this gig?
It was the same fantastic audience, in the same strange venue with a
nice setlist. "Kiss" and "Snakepit" were my
favourites. It´s funny as in 1987 I didn´t like hearing snakepit
live
(oh god, how time has gone:-(). This time
was completely different. They played it, as if they did it every
day......excellent. Also Robert´s part
on the flute......ahhh!
The only song I am still not into is the actual
version of "End". In my opinion they should play it as before or
leave it out. The additional tape part, Simon´s
bass and the new arrangement is not my cup of tea. Sorry for saying
this, but these are just my personal thoughts.
Apart this I must tell you a secret. After
seeing many gigs of the cure, I always wanted them throwing out all the
popstuff and playing faith and pornography
songs instead. Well it seems my wishes have come true.
But to be honest, I loved hearing "Inbetween
days" and "Just like heaven" in the loveley dark set, as it
shakes the audience. For me it was, as I did
discovered these both songs again. And they were perfomed brilliantly.
I didn´t think that I ever would say
this especially about these 2 songs, as I have heard them so many times.
Again the highlight of this gig was the last
encore with a crazy crowd. Now I wonder how it will be in Barcelona
with 8000 spanish Curemaniacs and a complete
lightening show. So 4 days to be normal german tourists in Spain
(Prost!).
Today, I arrived at La Riviera some 10 inutes
before Cure started to play because I had been so tired from the
night before that I fell asleep with the pen
in my hand during university and thus needed the afternoon and early
evening to catch up with some sleep. Furthermore,
I avoided the horrible pre-show music that Cure have this time,
some African tribal drumming that drives you
mad after 10 minutes.
Yesterday, the place was almost entirely black
with the audience consisting only of Goths. Tonight, the people were
older and more "normal".
OOTW/ Watching: The usual stuff. Better than
last night because the sound was right from the beginning on. Crowd
less enthusiastic than last night.
Want: Sequencers at the right volume this time
fascination street: Attracted huge cheers of recognition, played tighter and faster than yesterday
Open: Someone in the audience was holding up
an "Open" sign during the first songs. Well, his wish came true very
soon. It's the Dream Tour, after all...
Where the birds always sing: First change from
last nights set and a song premiere from Bloodflowers. Rather
disappointing because the band didn't sound
tight at all. Perry played the acoustic guitar this time. Should be
rehearsed again
The Kiss: And off we go... A personal dream
of mine was coming true, I'm a great admirer of that song, and Cure
didn't let me down: The drumming and the overall
sound was great, sounded well rehearsed. The solo was done by
Robert, with Perry only producing noise. Long,
loud and noisy, that' how it should be.
Snakepit: I couldn't believe it. As soon as
I recognized it, me and a friend started singing "Robert, get the pipe
out", which we considered as very funny. And
there it was: The infamous Snakepit-pipe! Guaranteed to hurt your
ears. Also very funny to watch Robert blowing
on this tiny thing. The version was just so great, with great lighting.
Very long, also. Yesterday featured Plainsong/pictures
in this part of the show, and so tonight we got
the "Kiss me" treat. Which was of course fine
with me.
Maybe: Perry was audible, thus better than yesterday
Inbetween: I expected this tonight. The audience went crazy, and the and liked it.
Loudest: Just so bad. The sound was horrible.
Robert talked his way through the song because he forgot most of
the lyrics. The rest of the band wasn't very
together as well.
Prayers: Fucked up again. What's wrong with
this song? Robert forgot the lyrics, almost every band member made
mistakes. I also don't like Perry's guitar,
it's way too distorted for this song. The band seemed to think that
it was bad also, because they all looked unhappy
and Perry was really angry when he put down the guitar.
100: Just as great as yesterday.
End: 1000 times better than yesterday. Simon
stepped on the right pedal this time and Perry's guitar was not as
prominent in the mix. But I still don't think
that song fits in the set very well.
39/Bloodflowers: the usual stuff
Plainsong: Worked well as the first encore.
The band took the stage and robert came out later. I realized there
would be no Picture when Robert didn't grab
a guitar while the others were still playing:
Disintegration: Played a million times better than in 98, but the usual version, not the six-string bass thing.
Strange day: I expected this also tonight. Way too slow. The audience fell asleep, but apart from that loved it.
Play for today: Small surprise that it featured
again after the mayhem it caused yesterday. Equally good audience
singing.
Just like heaven: Well, it was party time.
People on the balcony grabbed each other by the hand and were dancing
in circles.
A Forest: And then it came to an end, after 2 hours 30 minutes. Great as usual.
This time, there was no clapping for ten minutes,
because the show had a more finished fell to it and the audience
was generally worse than yesterday. It was
a good one, but in comparison...
Some remarks:
After the show, I talked for a long time to
the lady that is doing the lighting on this tour. She said that Cure are
giving out two setlists every night, one for
the main set and one for the encore. The always play what is on the main
setlist, more or less, but the encore list
is just a suggestion, as they decide it on stage what they're going to
do.I was
lucky and got yesterday's encore list from
her. It read:
Figurehead
Strange day
Pornography
Plainsong
Disintegration
M
Play 4
Forest
Of course, I was biting my ass, as we say in
Germany, when I read this, because I would have prefered if they'd
have done this a million times over what was
actually played. But at least we now know that we can expect
Pornography and M as well. Furthermore, she
claimed that the total amount of songs rehearsed was "just
so huge" (quote). A thing every cure fan likes
to hear. So maybe we can expect another Swing tour. The first five
songs and the last five songs of the main
set will stay the same every night, more or less, with the middle
part and the encores featuring different songs.
The encores will be grouped by records.
The tour book as on sale yesterday as well.
It
features every band member's personal 39 things, whatever they are.
And with that two great nights came to a close.
I would thank cure for giving me such a great time and look forward
to oberhausen
