(Thanks ThisDream and Christian)
Madrid was a quite surprising place to start
the Dreamtour. The venue was a "classic" discotheque with rather low
ceilings, palms inside, cocktail bars around
the stage, etc. - summa summarum: it is more a place for spending the
holiday nights than to attend a cure gig.
Well, I did both! My decision to go to a couple of spanish gigs was made
spontaneusly and fortunalety my spanish friend
(Muchas Grazias David!) could help me, buying tickets. Both shows
of course, have been sold out for weeks due
to the small capacity (about 2.000 I think).
The spanish audience is great - very comparable
with the french, who also are Curemaniancs. 30 min before the
beginning of the show the crowd started clapping
and singing "Robert, Robert...". I never have seen this
enthusiasm at german cure gigs....what a pitty.....
At the moment the Cure went on stage, there
was an incredible noise in the venue.
The Cure did nice versions of "Out of this
world", "Watching me fall" and "Want", which I already saw in
Hamburg and Brussels. With "Fascination
St" the crowd started to jump and didn´t stop until the end of "Open".
It´s such a great song and Roger is
doing a nice job on guitar. Following "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep",
"Plainsong" and "Pictures of You" were nice
as usual, with Robert doing a kind of catwalk during "Plainsong",
where the crowd got mad. Then they played
a real aggressive "Shake Dog Shake". As it was the fourth Intro-Song
I thought the show is starting the forth time....The
suivant "Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Sinking", "Last Day of
Summer" and "Maybe Someday" were played well
as well, with Robert in a very nice mood (during all the spanish
shows I attended).
Then there was the time for magical moments,
I often had at Cure gigs. They did "Siamese Twins"...so nice, so
dark.....fantastic!!!! I didn´t believe,
that I would ever have the chance to enjoy this great song live....
After that high level of emotions the mainset
lost its power. "Prayers for Rain" and "100 Years" were just
standard. "End" indeed was played quite badly.
It´s a pitty, as in 1998/1995 Jason treated the drums in a way I
loved. Recently there is a drum machine or
a tape (also for "39"), which can´t tranfer the original power of
both
songs.
Then after "Bloodflowers" and a main set of
2 hours!!! the Cure left the stage. In my personal opinion the
athmosphere was a bit down, as we heard a
mainset with mostly long, depressive songs. Well I love to hear such
songs, but the composition of it, is not the
taste of everybody. Maybe they should do one or two faster (pop) songs
(like "Primary" or "Walk") instead of playing
"Prayers"/"End" each night, to heat on the audience.
Fortunalatety they didn´t play pop songs
the first encore...instead it was the best encore I ever listened
to, doing
my favourite songs of my favourite album:
"All cats are grey", "Drowning Man" and a short but very nice version
of "Faith". The 2nd Encore they did Play for
Today, A Forest, in which the crowd now was going wild completely....
jumping, singing, clapping.....fantastic!!!
It was like in a football stadium "ole ole ole oleeeee"
So, generally speaking it was a very nice
gig with an fantastic audience, which Robert honored with saying
"Perfecto!!". The only thing they could improve
is the mainset, but these are just my personal thoughts.....
Well, what an experience. The Dream Tour really
deserves its name. Where can I start?
Well, I was hangin' round the venue throughout
the whole afternoon and heard the instrument soundcheck. Then I
went home (I'm living nearby) to eat diner
and only returned at 7 o'clock, just to hear that The Cure just finished
the
real soundcheck. Inside the venue, I talked
to a roadie who confirmed that this tour won't feature a support band.
At 9.20 PM, the stage lights went on and the
ontro music filled the hall. It's sth. neoclassical with a lot of violins,
nothing special, but at least there's building
up of tension. Then, five minutes later, the houselights went off and
Cure entered the stage welcomed by the deafening
cheers of enthusiastic Spaniards (i'm German, but I wasn't less
enthusiastic). I better do thid song by song
now:
1. OOTW: Nice. The sound wasn't loud at all,
they only turned it up throughout the first songs. I suddenly realized
that I was prety moved by all this and had
troubles not to cry.
2. Watching me fall: Still daring to play this
that early in the show, but it was received very well by the audience.
Well done.
3. Want. I love this song for some reason.
Only thing to complain about was that the sequencers were too low in the
mix, they're the best thing about this song.
4. Fascination street: The audience went mad. Still a bit too slow.
5. Open: The fun really started. Up to then,
it was the setlist of the club shows, but then suddenly the familiar chords
of Tape (yes!!!) resounded. I immediately
began to wonder how they would do Open, which was obvious to follow:
Solution: Roger played the third guitar!!!
Was abit funny too watch, he doesn't seem to be too familiar with that
instrument. I bet it will be an integral part
of the set, beacuse it had special lighting and was extremely well played
and thus well rehearsed.
6. If only tonight: The usual stuff. Although
they don't play it too often, almost every cure concert I attended in the
past featured that song, so I wasn't that
enthusiastic, but this was the best version I've ever heard of that
song,
together with London 6-1-95
7. Plainsong (!!!): never in my wildest dreams...
But it's called the dream tour, after all. Robert stepping round on
stage, but there wasn't any fog. Special lighting,
so maybe it will be featured in every set. No chimes at the
beginning. The best moment was when Robert
went to the back of the stage when he finished singing to pick up his
Jazzmaster while the others were still playing,
so I knew that it would reallu be followed by
8. pictures of you: Second dream coming true
on the dream tour. For someone like me who was too young for the
Prayer tour hearing Plaingsong and Pictures
in segue just like in the good old days was a real treat. the audience
loved it. I kept thinking that Pictures is
my favourite Cure livesong, when it's done as perfectly as yesterday it's
just
like a sea of guitars washing over your soul.
9. Shake dog shake: introduced by Robert in
Spnish as "Una canzione muy antigua", thus mixing up Italian and
Spanish. But never mind, he tried it! It was
agressively played, just the way it should be, and really fast. better
than
on the 98 shows. I realized that the Cure
had just played about all the concert openings from the last tours, Shake
dog, Plainsong, Want, Tape/open etc. Really
nice.
10.From the edge: A crowd pleaser. done well.
11.Sinking: Not many people in the audinece seemed to know that song. Done just like in 98, meaning well.
12. Last day of summer: Introduced by Robert as "Una canzione nueva". Done just like on record. I liked it.
13. Maybe someday: Audience loved it. Perrys guitar was too low in the mix.
14. Siamese twins: When this started, I just
thought that I was probably witnessing history. London 89 is a long time
ago... It was done just great!!! Well rehearsed,
great drumming, great singing. Robert finished by singing "Is it
always like this?" a long time after the music
stopped and the audience sang along. Perfect.
15. Prayers for rain: Played somehow lush.
they had to start again after the guitar riff was out of time and tune.
Could be done better.
16. 100 years: Done so well. The lighting was a dream in fiery red. Audience went crazy.
17. End: the lowpoint of the set. Obviously
underrehearsed. The bass was not audible, which is very bad for a song
that is carried by a bass guitar riff. Maybe
Simon stepped on the wrong effect. This part of the set was a bit long
for many members of the audience. An endless
stream of dark 7-minutes guitar songs. I personally wouldn't mind if
they threw in Just like heaven, just to get
the rhythm right.
18. 39: I put my earplugs in because everything
was becoming too loud, so i really can't judge the quality of the
song.
19. Bloodflowers: earplugs out and off they go with my fevourite song off the new record. great.
20. The encore started with an unexpected All
cats are grey, which was too good to be true. Only three instruments,
bass, drums and keyboard. So Perry wasn't
on stage and Robert only sang.
21. Drowning man: Introduced by Robert as "One
of his favorite songs", this is my favorite cure live song. The
drumming was somehow different in comparison
to the swing tour, there was a computerized drum track mixed in,
just like in the good old days. The drumming
went on and on after the guitars finished, and the audience clapped
along well to the tacktack.
22. Faith: Being this an entirely "faith" encore,
the real thing couldn't miss. It will feature in subsequent show,
because it had special lighting and was well
rehearsed. There was no lyrical ad libbing, but there was a long outro
guitar solo which was great. If we don't have
the six-string bass, then at least the guitar work makes it up. 8
minutes.
23. Play for today: When they came out again
for this the whole place was shaking. The audience sang along to the
keyboard line so loudly that you couldn't
hear the band. Looking forward to get a bootleg of the concert, it should
be
really funny to hear. The band was lauging
and they all looked satisfied.
24. A forest: This brought the house down.
Long ending with funny guitar work. Robert gave a kiss to the audience,
said "perfecto!" and left the stage smiling.
After this the houselights went on, but sth.
happened that I never witnessed in my long concert going history. the
audience simply refused to leave, even after
2 hours and 40 minutes. Not one person was haeding towards the door,
every was shouting for more for 10 MINUTES!!!
Unbelievable. But they didn't come back, although even I thought
at one point that they would turn off the
lights again. Maybe they headed straight for the rolls-Royce that was
probably waiting behind the venue. One of
the best concerts I've ever seen. And the best thing: Tonight, it's the
same again!!! Maybe they should throw in an
occasional Boys don't cry here and there, but so far the Dream tour
deserves its name.
Review by Ale
We went on a bus in the morning and we arrived
Madrid at the afternoon (16:00) "We" are Orient Ambulance, ALe
and FELIPe, we covered Jupiter Crash for Pink
Pig.
It was very easy to arrive to LA RIVIERA as
we took the circular underground...
at 18...we arrived and there was already plenty
of sinister people, a crowd of crows, it was funny in the strange
meaning. The place was really small, and you
cold feel all the sounds in bight colours. This is the playlist, I
think I don't miss any song but I'm sure I
don't remember the secuency, although I have tried to remember it
perfectly:
-OOTW: perfect intro warm up for nearly a three-hours
show
-Watching me fall: long distance death calling
-want: (first of the first songs of the other
albums) perfect petition
-fascination st.: a walk in furs with RS screaming
loud
-open: the audience shouting while Robert
singing
-if only tonight we..: sedant drums and psicotic
sounds
-plainsong: crying in happiness
-pictures of you: everybody thinking about
their girlfriends (and Wives)
-last day of..: perry begins alone with the
guitar and they join him on tristesa
-from the edge of the ...: guitarrorism trying
too survive
-siamese twins: everybody thinking about their
brothers and sisters in 1982
-maybe someday: the unique "POP" moment in
a way. it was played al ralenti and as the single mix
-shake dog shake: everybody jumpig someone
else's feet
-sinking: the floor went down ten inches during
this song. some idiots took a UK flag with BF cover on it. I started
hitting them and they ate it
-prayers for rain: a long shout along with
changing drums
-100 years: quasi techno with jumping heads
and euphoric rythm
-end: unexpected and hard bass for a false
end
-39: public really excited and the BF more
shouted lyrics
-BF: the end for the tour in the first night
and a smile
first encore: faith
-all cats are grey: perry on keys too and robert
joyfully whispering
-drowning man: long sounds and perfect drums
-Faith: minimalist vesion "where we all cried"
and "prayed Thee".
second encore: 17
-play for today: laaa laaalaaa laalaaa...quasi
el cello
-a forest: a kinda ironic short version with
bass and guitar chats.
It was like PARIS but in an even smaller place
than Le Zenith. RS spoke nearly ten times in Spanish, introducing
some songs and laughing. they didn't play
any of the famous singles, not even Just like or boys don't the sound of
the place was fine, but there were times you
couldn't recognize the exact sounds. Some mixing problems had the
keyboards lower or Jason didn't hear the rythm
sampler (example: prayers for rain) and began later. Simon loosed
the basses and you thought he had missed a
note. Every song spoke for itself and seemed to make reference to the
ideas of a loud concert and as if it was the
last one...you really had to think that the concert was begginning at every
song because of the power and you just had
to touch the sweat to remember it wasn't a dream. At the end
everybody clapped hands and shouted out loud
for five minutes for the band to play again.
Terra showed some songs and the "News at 11" screened a minute of Watching me fall.we'll see RS today!!!
Then we noticed the name of the hotel they
were into and went there. An hour later we met the whole band and
spoke quickly. Then they escaped in two taxis
beacause of the ammount of fans there. Scandalo. We also met
Chris White. We later met Simon. and then
Roger, we chatted a bit about the Pink Pig and the cooooldness in
Madrid: "We shaken hands" and went to take
a Metro. but that's another story...
I was at the Cure concert in La Riviera on
monday 27 March. It was perfect from the very beginning, as we walked
towards the decadent looking disco hidden
behind overgrown creepers, and beside a river full of ducks happily
swimming. It created a very different and
strange atmosphere of silent anticipation at the excitement that was to
come. The concert was more than any of us
could ever have dreamed of. After such a long time without The Cure I
felt a bit uneasy at the changes that I might
encounter only to be taken back to the magical feelings only The
Cure´s music can awaken. To be enveloped
by the same comforting ambient, as pure as ever as they played their
most heartfelt songs. It was lovely to feel
that that good things don´t necessarily have to change with time.
That the
truly beautiful things can and should remain
untouched. Listening to Sinking, Disintegration, a Forest, the
excitement produced by A Play for Today and
the awe-inspiring Faith, combined with the magnificence of their new
songs, and all the rest, made it The
Perfect Day.
"But I know we have to go back, I realize,
we only get to stay so long, we always have to go back to real lives
where we belong..." And now to the question...
Before The Cure came on-stage there was some background music
that helped to make us all sense what we were
about to feel. You could hardly hear it, but then you noticed, and it
was so perfect. Then as the expectation grew
and we all became more excited sensing the closeness to the
beginning of the concert, the music changed
into a classical piece that nearly drove us all mad, and that I fell in
love with. I wonder if you could tell me what
both these songs are (the first is from The Cure).
