Placebo's website claims
that they will be performing 2 songs at approximately
9:49 p.m. Central European time. They don't give any other
info, like when The Cure will be performing, or how long the Paris
event actually runs, but this does contradict the 4:30 - 7:30
bit."
For all you Mac users (and
anyone else), 'M' Live@Launch is up on the Audio/Video
page.
(Thanks Bill)
The Live 8 website has posted the times

from thecure.com and added Porl and a background) from
Austrian tv station ATV+ :

June 28th
Live@Launch has posted
the link for the performance of 'M', though it
doesn't seem to be working at the time of this posting.
Update: The main
link STILL doesn't work, but if you search for Cure videos on Launch,
you will find it here.
(Thanks Terry)
I've put together a quick
Live 8 broadcast
page. If you have any info to add, especially for the countries that
aren't listed, please send
it in. Thanks!
Here's a look at the Versailles
Live 8 invitation (with info on various ways to
get to the venue):

(Thanks Ripley)
A bit more info on the location
of the Greek show:
"Today on Fuse's "Daily Download", Billy
Corgan spoke about his new album. When asked about the track
"To Love Somebody", he said that he
got his good friend
Robert from The Cure to record the track with him.
Then a bunch of people in pink bellyshirts started to cheer...Ironic."
(Thanks Grace)
"Before U2's first Dublin gig last night
(Fridat 24th June) they played Inbetween Days about 3
songs before the band came on. Myself and a few
others gave an ironic
roar. The Cure in front of 80,000 people, sweet!!!"
(Thanks Ronan and Ian)
"A
junior shool in Switzerland has released a record
called "THE DOG ATE MY HOMEWORK" for helping Margaux (a girl
with a cancer). In the booklet feature this : "SPECIAL THANKS
TO ROGER O'DONNELL FROM THE CURE AND PHIL COLLINS FOR
THEIR MORAL SUPPORT!"
(Thanks José)
June 24th
The final shows of the summer

- Aug. 20th in Sicily, Italy and Sept. 1st in Athens,
Greece.
(Thanks Christopher)
And there is an update on
the future from Robert (it's in that comments mess in the Quartet

"WE ARE ABOUT TO START RECORDING DEMOS
(AS WELL AS PLAYING IN OLD SONGS!) - AND AFTER THESE
9 SUMMER FESTIVALS (WE DON'T REALLY COUNT LIVE 8!) WE
WILL BE GOING INTO THE STUDIO TO START WORK ON THE NEXT
THING...
AFTER THAT IS DONE
(!)... WE WILL PLAY SOME REAL SHOWS: AROUND THE WORLD..."
(Thanks Eric and Wendy)
Update on support acts for

Live 8 Coverage
Grows
June 24, 2005
After originally
announcing that their Live 8 coverage would be heard
on two channels, XM has expanded their coverage to a total
of nine channels. Channel 40 will be dedicated to overall
coverage of the event, with a seperate channel broadcasting
each entire concert from London (channel 41), Paris (channel
42), Berlin (channel 43), Rome (channel 44), Philadelphia
(channel 45) and Barrie, Canada (channel 46). This is all in
addition to the two previously announced channels, with the global
coverage on channel 200 and the London concert being simulcast
on channel 201.
Canadian radio
listeners who do not have their satellite radio yet
will be able to hear Live 8 coverage on the Sound Source
Network, a division of Standard Broadcasting. The
broadcast will begin at 1 p.m. EST and feature performances
from around the globe, with live updates from the Canadian
concert every half-hour.
Live 8 takes place
around the world on Saturday, July 2.
The Cure split is mentioned
in today's Hip Clicks
blog at USA Today.
(Thanks Jeff)
Though this has been posted
before, I've had 5 people ask me about it in
the last few weeks, so I'm posting it again. There
has obviously been a baby boom within the Cure community
recently. : )
"Some quotes
from an article on Billy Corgan's solo CD by Cameron
Adams appearing in The Advertiser, The Daily Telegraph
(Aus.), and Herald Sun (Aus.):
And it's his image
as grunge's guru of gloom he plays with on TheFutureEmbrace's
unlikely cover - the Bee Gees' To Love Somebody,
a duet with Robert Smith of the Cure, Corgan's mate: "We
are the most miserable men in rock. Isn't it perfect?"
And the influence
of Joy Division (and the Cure, and the Cocteau Twins
- all bands who mixed rock and electronics) is all over
his TheFutureEmbrace ... "I started from the mechanical
point of view of the bands I like - the Cure, Joy Division.
I'm not trying to sound like them. It's more that I worked
out what makes them tick. See, the Cure never sound wimpy, but
they're not a loud band like the Pumpkins were."
(Thanks Lenore)
"Prior to Billy Corgan taking the stage
(in Atlanta), there were two Cure songs played...in between
a few old Duran Duran songs and some others...the Cars
I think. 'Other Voices' followed by 'Splintered In Her Head'.
Billy was awesome."
(Thanks Patrick)
"In an article about reissues, there's
a paragraph talking about the Cure's first four in
San
Antonio Current."
(Thanks Lenore)
"I get this excellent newsletter every
week from www.b3ta.com
- and this week there was a competition to show famous people
with their look-a-like pets - scroll down to see one of
the entries: http://www.b3ta.com/board/4797629"
XM has announced
it will broadcast Live 8 performances from five of
the concerts around the globe, with XM personalities on site
broadcasting live. XM will broadcast from Philadelphia,
London, Rome, Paris and Berlin, beginning at 9 a.m. ET. The
coverage will be spread out across two channels, 200 and
201.
"Live 8 is that
rare, global event that unites under a common cause
an extraordinary line-up of talented musical artists
from diverse genres and we are honored to be the exclusive
satellite radio broadcaster for this event," said XM
EVP of Programming Eric Logan. "The millions of XM listeners
who won't be able to attend this historic musical event will
still have the opportunity to experience all of the excitement
and, of course, hear all that great music."
Meanwhile, New
York newspapers are reporting that MTV is negotiating
with Live 8 organizers over TV rights for the July
2 concert event, aimed at raising awareness of poverty in
Africa. AOL Music already has the rights to broadcast Live
8 around the world online.
MTV hopes to
air some of the performances from the concerts. As
for AOL, some performances will be seen live for free on the
Web at AOLmusic.com, with free
on-demand access to the shows for six weeks.
NEW YORK (AP)
- MTV and VH1 will telecast eight hours of the Live
8 concerts on July 2, the networks said Wednesday. The performances,
featuring artists U2, Coldplay, Madonna, Dave Matthews
Band, Jay-Z and Destiny's Child among many others, are being
held in eight cities to raise awareness of poverty in Africa.
The telecast
is a repeat performance for MTV, which showed the
Live Aid concerts two decades ago. Like Live Aid, the
Live 8 performances are being organized by Bob Geldof.
America Online,
which owns the U.S. rights to the concerts and will
beam them on the Internet, is also negotiating with ABC for
a prime-time telecast on July 2 following the cable TV
coverage.
MTV, VH1 and
MTV's college network mtvU will be on the air with
the same feed from noon to 8 p.m. EDT that day, switching
back and forth from different sites and also presenting
packaged reports, like a look back at Live Aid.
Related networks
CMT and VH1 Classic will air concert highlights
the next day featuring artists geared to their audiences.
It will be the
longest period MTV has gone live to cover an event
since Woodstock '99, the network said.
XM Satellite
Radio will carry the concerts live from Philadelphia,
London, Paris, Berlin and Rome, America Online also
announced on Wednesday. The Premiere Radio Networks will
also carry concert coverage and performances tailored to
three different radio formats - urban, rock and pop.
Internationally,
the MTV, VH1 and Music Factory networks will show
hourly bulletins about the show.
And The
Age has news of Live 8 broadcasts in Australia.
Curespotting:
"Billy Corgan is DJ'ing on Q101 &
playing "Charlotte Sometimes" right now. He introduced
it by saying this song is by a crazy guy with funny
hair over in
England. Who knew that one day there'd be thousands
of kids wearing funny hair and scary make-up, "all emulating
this soft-bellied man." Yes, he said that!"
(Thanks Lenore)
"I went to the
movies tonight to see a great new film from director
Jean-Marc Vallée called C.R.A.Z.Y. It's a movie
from Québec, thus in french, about a boy growing
up in the 60's, and dealing with his homosexuality, his relationship
with his family and espacially the love and acceptance of
his dad.
At age 20 in
the movie, while at his brother's wedding, after hearing
bad music all night with all the family dancing, the
main character waits for the dj to play the song he requested.
Then, finally, the song starts and It's 10:15 Saturday
Night. We hear It for a good minute and the kids are dancing to
It while the family vanish from the dance floor (not being
their cup of tea I guess).
Since It is
a french movie from Québec, It may never be
available elsewhere unless It is sold on independant foreign
circuits in USA and/or Europe. If you got a chance to
see It, It is a bitter-sweet movie, warm, funny, touching
that deals very well with the often complicated father and
son relationship.
Interestingly
enough, in the official site, The Cure doesn't appear
in the music credits... And I left the theatre before
seeing the actual generic of the movie. No soundtrack available
so far.
"Today they played Before 3 in my local
grocery store in Belfast's Botanic Avenue and also
at a very dodgy lap dancing club in Galway at a recent Bachelor
party a girl poledanced to Lullaby. Weirdly erotic!!!"

Billboard
and NME have stories
about Porl returning to The Cure.
An update on David Fargier's
book 'After The Rain...":
The Cure".
Projet à
l'état embryonnaire mais qui semblerait intéresser
quelques maisons de production. Egalement sur son plan
de travail la rédaction de
quelques
Some good
news for the tiny enterprise "After the rain" :
Of the 1500
copies of the French edition, only 250 are still available.
As the book will soon be released through out Virgin
Megastores and flyers distributed during this summer
gigs, these last copies will probably sold out soon. So
those who didn't get it yet, hurry up, guys !
David is
thinking about other projects : a visual documentary
(for TVs and/or a DVD) inspired by the "After the
rain... The Cure". Project in a
embryonary
state but that seems to inspire some production companies.
Also on his desk some texts to illustrate a picture book
about Björk.
Concerning
the book in its other languages, contacts advanced
for the Turkish and Greek versions. Good hope also for
the Spanish edition with
the help
of Hispacure, the official Spanish fan club. And big
issue : a contract have been signed for distributing the
English edition in North
America and
Europe at a price more than reasonable.
More information
on other languages release coming soon..."
(Thanks David)
Cure cover:
"OK Go's latest release is a 3-song
affair called Do What You Want. The other two songs are
"Invincible" and a cover of "The Lovecats" by The
Cure. To
Americans, a release like this is called an EP. More
sophisticated people know them as singles, which they
love to loudly play while wearing short pants, swilling
beer, and eating liver and monkey sandwiches. It's a small
world, ripe for the rocking. Do your part: you can buy this new
singlEP at the iTunes
Store, Amazon.com,
and a host of other places. You can also
listen to two of those songs, for free, on okgo.net
and our MySpace
page."
(Thanks James)
Curespotting:
"Robert is mentioned in an MSNBC article
about Billy Corgan's new release. Their
song together, 'To Love Somebody' got a rave review in
the article.

"not ususally one to report these but
CSI new york (or is it cold case? sunday night 8pm
pacific CBS)
anyway, there
was a scene of a mother and father in a bathroom,
getting ready to punish their young, blonde daoughter.
"lullaby" is playing, as the
mother and
father call their son in, and make him push his sisters'
face into a tub of water--so she almost drowns.
very wierd."
(Thanks Arusha)
is a website that makes fun (and rightfully
so) at all those motivational companies for suckers.
"It's a perfect day to throw back your head and kiss
it all goodbye" is one of their demotivational sayings which
is ironic to me since it's one of Bob's more motivational, upbeat
songs. So is "Giving up and going on are both the same dead
end."
(Thanks Sam)
June 18th
The summer shows just got A
LOT more interesting with the official site's announcement of Porl Thompson
returning to The Cure for these shows. Welcome
back Porl!
Ugh! So happy with that, then I actually
read the messages and find out that "THIS WILL BE A
GUITAR CURE" and "NO KEYBOARDS!". Well that's disappointing,
but still great to have Porl back for however long it
is. So they HAVE to open with 'Open' at Live 8, right?
: )
Here's an update (including
VIP ticket info) on the Live 8 show in Versailles,
France:
"On July 2nd, The Cure will play for
Live 8 in Versailles on the castle esplanade to an expected
audience of 200,000. The show will be free but 20,000
VIP passes will be available through an SMS competition.
To enter the competition, text 'Live' from a French mobile
phone to 73600 from June 20th on. The funds generated
from the text competition will go directly to funding the event
costs.
Initially,
it was supposed to be set in the Tuileries park in
Paris but was moved to Versailles to accommodate a larger
audience and to preserve the Tuilerie monuments.
Other international artists include James Brown, Shakira,
Muse and Placebo. French artists scheduled: Yannick
Noah, Pascal Obispo, Kool Shen, Kyo, Axelle Red, Youssou
N'Dour, Florent Pagny, Calogero, Raphaël, Cerrone and
Diam's.
In France,
Live 8 will be broadcasted live on M6 (TV) and NRJ
(radio). Live 8 will be held simultaneously in
8 cities around the world: London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Philadelphia,
Toronto, Tokyo and Johannesburg.
---
The day
before, Cerrone will have his 'Cerrone Dance Party'
on the same premises. I'm attaching the map
of this event to give you an idea of the setup.

AFP Press Release:
Live 8:
James Brown, The Cure, Shakira et Placebo à
l'affiche à Versailles
PARIS,
17 juin 2005 (AFP) - James Brown, The Cure, Shakira,
Kyo, Axelle
Red, Youssou N'Dour, Florent Pagny, Calogero, Raphaël,
"This is without doubt the most bizarre
yet funny use of the Cure ever and I claim my £5.
First the
background info you need...
In Scotland
there is a comedy series called Chewing The Fat which
used the many talents of comedienne Karen Dunbar.
She now has her own show
and one
of the recurring characters is the appalling lounge
singers, Almost
Angelic.
Listen to
the whole clip and send your fivers to the usual address!!"
(Thanks to Hugh for the clip and to
Bruno for hosting it)
"Oi! Just a couple of minutes ago, watching
Channel 4, there was an advert for World's Biggest
Airliner and the music playing was the first
20 seconds
of 'M' off Seventeen Seconds. Sounded so good and
it was such a surprise."
(Thanks Honey Honey)
"Last night I was at the Better than
Ezra concert in Chicago. During the middle of their
last song, they brought in about 20-30 seconds of Fascination
Street. It was awesome."
(Thanks James)
"Last night I was watching 100 greatest
kid stars on VH1 and during the segment on Anthony
Michael Hall the played 2 small clips of Lovecats and
Just like
Heaven. It was quite nice to hear such great 80's sound
songs played with one of the coolest 80's stars."
(Thanks Wade)
June 16th
Stereogum removed their mp3
of 'To Love Somebody', but Billy has the
entire album up on his MySpace page.
(Thanks Jane)
Some "REAL NEWS" from the official
site - The Cure have switched locations for their Live 8 performance.
They are now "closing" the Paris/Versailles
show at Palais de Versailles on July 2nd. It's
funny, someone predicted something like this wouuld
happen, for certain reasons, and sure enough....(deleted,
I mean really, why even bother?).
Update: This show is actually in Versailles, not Paris.
Live 8 apparently have posted the wrong map:
"About
the concert in France on July 2nd, the Palais de Versailles
is not located in Paris but in... Versailles!
That's about 15 miles west of
Paris.
For some
strange reason the www.live8live.com
website is plainly mistaken - they show Porte
de Versailles in Paris on their map, whichhas nothing
to do with the Palais de Versailles (Versailles' Castle).
In short,
the show will be staged in Versailles, on the avenue
that leads to the castle."
(Thanks Olivier)
For anyone having trouble
with the Live@Launch clips, I've posted a couple of wmv and mp3 files on
the Audio/Video
page. Hope they help some of you out. And if anyone at Yahoo, Geffen,
etc. have a problem with them being posted, just drop me an e-mail and they're
gone.
(Thanks Eric and Bill)
Another update on the aug.
10th Lokerse Festival in Belgium:
"The Lokerse Feesten have added
the last names now, and the Cranes are officially confirmed
to play on the same day as The Cure. Here's the full line-up
for the 10th:
And also this was to be read on the main page: "The
exeptional pre-sale for wednesday the 10th of August
is running like a train! Make sure you
don't wait too long to order tickets for this night!"
Just a strategy to give the ticket sale another boost,
or the plain truth? It wouldn't surprise me if the tickets
were going fast, but then again if everyone felt like me, there
were no tickets left within the first hour they're on sale...
: ) "
(Thanks Untitled)
A update on the aug.
28th Berlin show:
"some info about the berlin show:
there will be two bands playing before the cure.
guess who is one of them....surprise...right, the
cranes! :-)
the name of the other band is still kept as a secret...
but it's definitely not philip boa & the voodooclub
(as mentioned before)."
(Thanks Tom)
Robert didn't show up for
the first of Billy Corgan's London shows (at least not onstage). Maybe Billy
and his giant Robert photo has scared him away : )
"At Billy Corgan's London gig
last night, as we were waiting for him to go on stage,
they played Other Voices, and right before he came on, Splintered
in Her Head. No appearence from Robert though, not even with
a backdrop photo on To Love Somebody. Great show by the
way......."
Update: While
Robert didn't join him onstage, he WAS at the
show:
"Robert was at Billy Corgans show
last night, he was sitting in the sound and lighting
cage. no stage appearance though as thought."
"Linda Strawberry, who's playing
keyboards on tour with Billy Corgan, has posted
a photo of Robert and an account of their meeting
with him. http://lindastrawberry.com/tourjournal/"
(Thanks JC,
Dave, Lenore and Derek)
Curespotting:
"Just been watching Brainiac: History Abuse on
Sky One, but I have to admit I wasn't paying much
attention. That is, until I heard Lovecats playing in
the background when I turned around to see 2 girls and a guy
dressed as witches trying to lasso a stuffed cat.(?)
From what I could gather, they were testing out
various methods used during the infamous witch trials
of old, which also included floating in a swimming
pool and throwing a broomstick."
(Thanks Mr. Moose)
"1. Last night I was watching
"Britney and Kevin : Chaotic:" season finale
at UPN (yes I know, I know). What has Britney to do with
The
Cure? Well it seems very unlikely, yet during scenes
of her wedding they used a cover of LOVESONG!
(Can't tell whose the cover is!)
2. Robert Smith in a museum? Well, there is
a very original Robert Smith mask in the Museum
of Shoes of Elda (Alicante, Spain). The museum
has (or had) a section called "Shoes for Masks"
where Robert's mask has been exposed together with
other masks with famous faces such as Fidel
Castro, Ché Guevara, Frida Kalho, Albert
Einstein, Elton John, Agustín Lara, Oliver
Hardy and Stand Laurel, John Lennon. These pieces of
art
were made recycling shoes by the Mexican sculptor
Marcelino Barragán. I attached the pic.
Just look after the red arrow, at the left of the man,
Robert's mask is right beside John Lennon's.
Aren' t these masks grotesque?
Note: The original article was posted on March 15th,
2005, and the museum website doesn't say if the
"Shoes for Mask" section is still being exhibited.
3. This is a part of an article where new releases
are being reviewed and of course, The Future Embrace
of Billy Corgan is given an A minus and highlights
the participation of Robert Smith and "To Love Somebody"
cover.
Here is the paragraph from: www.seacostonline.com/calendar/6_05cds.htm
"BOYZ WILL BE BOYZ: Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins)
gets a really good buzz going with the techno-toned
yet humanistic “TheFutureEmbrace” (Warner Bros.).
Helping with the mass hypnosis are fellow Pumpkin Jimmy
Chamberlin and the Cure's Robert Smith, plus producers
Ben Harris (Nitzer Ebb) and Bjorn Thorsrud. Most curious
is a remake of the Bee Gees' “To Love Somebody. A-minus"
(Thanks Pamela)
"In the july issue of stuff in
the gearotica section(pg. 62), there's a write-up on the
new 30gb ipod photo. it starts off "carry the cure's
pictures of you...or actual pictures of you". "
(Thanks Brian)
June 15th
Don't forget the Live@Launch performance and interview
should be online later today.
Update: As of 2:15am
US central time, the links have been posted. Just The Figurehead
and the interview. No sign of Fire In Cairo, M and The
Drowning Man. And the Album Retrospective is the same old one
from the Bloodflowers promotion in 2000, not anything new.
Update on the lineup for the
august 10th show in Belgium - The Cure, Mercury
Rev and Cranes:
"Thank you for your question. Indeed,
you are completely correct:
10 August: Cranes,
Mercury Rev and The Cure at the Lokerse Feesten!
"I know you've reported on this before
in the past, but it has happened yet again: Tori Amos covered
"Lovesong" at her Paris concert June 13, 2005, as can be
seen here: http://members.aol.com/thatswhatlget/061305.html
She must really love
this song as she's covered it over 50 times since
1994. Nothing groundbreaking or anything, but I just thought
it was an interesting spotting nonetheless."

"I attended a performance of the Australian
play Barmaids this weekend. The setting is an
Australian pub and looks at the future of two mature-aged
barmaids whose jobs
are jeopardy with the introduction of Skimpy Barmaids
and Karaoke. To mark the passing of each day, a mannequin's
underwear is changed with the day printed on the back.
As the day changed to Friday - Friday I'm In Love was played."

"Just been watching
The Wright Stuff on Channel 5, they were talking about
how American soldiers tortured prisoners in Iraq with Christna
Aguileras music and previously with Metallica somewhere
else. When Matthew Wright asked the panel which song they
would torture someone with, one replied Love Cats by The Cure!!!"

the USA. I heard "A Night Like This" on the Michael

Mike Leigh's 'Career Girls'
is finally getting a dvd release in North America
on Sept. 6th. How is this Cure related? From the Aug.
97 news archive:
Terry Marshall's daily
insider, 8 aug 1997:
The Cure's music
figures prominently in 'career girls,' the new film
from acclaimed 'secrets and lies' director mike leigh.
six of the cure's classic tracks, 'the lovecats,' 'the walk,'
'the caterpillar,' 'the upstairs room,' 'just one kiss'
and 'let's go to bed,' will be heard in the comedy about two
girlfriends who reunite for a weekend six years after leaving college.
IndieWire (Aug. 8th, 1997):
Mike Leigh says,
"I kept hearing The Cure. And I sort of thought, we
could have The Cure. So we approached The Cure and they
turned out to be fans of mine and they said, as long as
it was always them, and nobody else, we could pretty well
have it for nothing -- which made it possible to do, cause
those things can be exorbitant and prohibitive." The music
is used in extensive 80's flashback segments.

Never Enough - The Story of
The Cure will be coming out in October from
Omnibus Press. Here's a look at the cover.
"Billy Corgan was playing in Ghent tonight.
He played "To Love Somebody" with a mosaic of Robert on the
background screen."
"Billy Corgan's
concert in Cologne yesterday! He performed "To
Love Somebody", meanwhile a picture of Robert Smith was
projected to the wall!"
Creepy or cheesy or......? The Billy
& Robert rumors start here! (For the humor impaired
- it's a joke, it's a joke, it's a joke....or is it?) ;
)

"the first
page of today's (Wednesday) art section is a story
on Paul Anka, there are photos of Cobain, Billy Idol , michael
Stipe, AND Robert
Smith! I havent
read it yet , I am at work after all, Ha, but
it looks like it's about his new 'rock' cd, called 'Rock
Swings'. you can read it on their online site, nytimes.com"
Sad Songs Say So Much18. Prayers
for Rain The Cure (1989) The following are some of
the words found in the lyrics to Prayers for Rain: shatter,
dull, kill, stifle, infectious, hopelessness, rain, suffocate,
dirt, nowhere, desolate, drab, killing, fracture, stale,
strangle, entangle, deteriorate, drearily, tired. Drop in a
few pronouns and conjunctions and you have the entire song.
Music-wise, the band lumbers back and forth between two menacing
chords like Frankenstein's monster deciding which villager
to pummel, while Robert Smith's neurotic vocals sound like he
just got punched in the stomach after eating a three-course meal.
1. The Christmas
Shoes Newsong (2000) The Christmas Shoes is
smug, saccharine and more depressing than the Cure's entire
career. And because it's Christmas-themed and we
have to hear it year after year in the US, it gets my vote
as the most depressing song ever. Download at your own peril.
Earlier this month,
Skuller was one of the performers at the Knitting
Factory nightclub’s “Loser’s Lounge” performance series
that featured a
tribute to the
music of the Smiths and the Cure, two New Wave-era
rock bands awash in melodic melancholia and intricately
arranged self-absorption.
It’s likely that
select songs penned by Morrissey and Robert Smith,
the leaders of the Smiths and the Cure, could be covered,
with jazzy stylisms added, by Skuller.

"This is some info for your Curespottings
from Vancouver, Canada.
1.On Tuesday 7th,
it was broadcasted at CityTV (Channel 13) a MuchMoreMusic
program The Story of...The Cure from 10 am to 11 am
Pacific Time. The program featured Robert Smith interviews in
different years, also to Simon, Jason, Roger and Perry and
images of the band in videos and concerts since its beginnings
to 2004.
3.Also, the Killers
had a successful show in Toronto at the end of May,
and Brandon Flowers' voice was compared to Robert Smith in
JamShowbiz
(an article taken
from the Toronto Sun).
Even lead singer/synth
player Brandon Flowers was moved to mention the
reception to the band from their northern neighbours. "There
is an awful
lot of you," said
Flowers, whose strangled, emotional vocals recalled
Robert Smith of The Cure more often than not. "I just wanted
to say the way that Canada has accepted us is unbelievable."
In the same article,
the reporter analyzes The Killers' songs and their
influeces and mention The Cure influenced in the songs
Change Your Mind
and Jenny Was a
Friend of Mine.
Most of Hot Fuss,
along with a few new songs, was played and it was
fun to spot the '80s influences on such lively standouts
as Midnight Show (U2), Change Your Mind and Jenny Was
A Friend Of Mine (The Cure), Smile Like You Mean It (New Order),
their uber-hits Somebody Told Me and Mr.
Brightside (Duran
Duran, New Order) and the gospel-tinged encore number,
All These Things I've Done (U2), which sparked a healthy
crowd sing-and-clap-along.
I know you
mentioned Paul Anka doing The Cure already, but heres
a link to listen to the full album (you need to scroll
the ticker right, past Kelly
Osbourne),
including covers of Nirvana, Billy Idol, REM, and
more."

Some new article/review/ad
scans:
"Today I have found this little article
on Tentaciones:
The Cure
comes to the FIB
The last
adding to the FIB-Heineken has been the band of Robert
Smith. The Cure, who are currently living a aecond youth
now that are celebrating their 26º Anniversary of
the release of their first album, also took part in the FIB-Heineken
in 2003 (note from the translator: they came in 2002, not
2003), are together with Oasis, Nick Cave, Keane, Underworld,
LCD Soundsystem, or Basement Jaxx, the main-stage bands.
And a review and
an advert
of the Remasters from NME (30th April)."
"During a baseball game at Dodger Stadium,
here in LA, they played Boys Don't Cry during the
time when a player on the opposing team was protesting
an umpire's call."
There's a strange sense of déjà
vu running throughout (Coldplay's) X&Y and
it's not of the usual U2-meets-Radiohead variety,
either. The phrasing of the chorus on "White Shadows" sounds
eerily like a whitewashed version of the chorus on Prince's
"When Doves Cry," plus other sections of the song exhibit
a decidedly Cure vibe as some of Martin's phrasing evokes
Robert Smith on that band's seminal "Love Song." And then there's
the unmistakable Big Country guitar sweeps on "Talk." In fact
this album may be the release where Martin, Will Champion, Guy
Berryman, and Jon Buckland really reveal their influences with
wild abandon. Of course newer music lovers won't pick up on the late
'80s aural nuances, but still."
(Thanks Tempest)
"Yesterday i picked up the DVD
' Full Frontal - Season 1 '. Full Frontal
was one of australia's best comedy sketch show
ever, and starred stand up comedian Eric Banna. ( Known
to Americans as The Hulk. Also stared in Black Hawk Down
and TROY.) See the bag he's holding? Someone in the props department
must be a fan :) "
(Thanks Jes)
"Why
Can't I Be You was played as a 'Million Dollar Riff'
question on the Australian music quiz show 'RockWiz'
on Saturday night. The intro was
played by
the house band and contestants had to name the song
and artist - they did!
Also,
Lullaby has been used in the background for an ad
promoting this week's episode of Cold Case on Australia's
Nine Network."

"This sunday
morning 05/06/2005 on french tv TF1 just after Telefoot
(soccer program), there is a 5 minutes program about
young football player who meet their hero players, and
right at the very end of the report was used just a few chords
of 'boys don't cry' (accoustic hit version). Absolutly
unsignificant,
but always makes one's day (mine, in that case...).
And
Swiss radio Couleur 3 is advertising the Rock oz'Arenes
d'Avenches festival, with obviously a bit of a Cure
song, and 'boys don't cry' do it again!"

June 6th
The official site has confirmed
the June 15th debut of the new Cure on Yahoo Music!, and yes,
it's Mike
Hedges at the producer's helm. Congrats
to all who guessed it last week. But, it looks like
they won't be doing any new songs during this live performance.
And there is a mention of another special with Mike Hedges
upcoming on iTunes, but again, no new songs. So are there
any new songs? Or just "newly recorded" versions of old songs?
I'm not so sure anymore.
There's also confirmation of the John
Lennon cover for an Amnesty International cd. See the
May 24th update for more info on that.
And there
is this about the summer festivals: "Just Greece
and Italy to go...and maybe London". So I guess they
might not play Live 8 after all. Shouldn't someone tell
the Live 8 people
to remove their name until confirmed?
Great news for the fans in
Hungary. The official site has confirmed
the Aug. 26th show in Szeged at the Youth Days of
Szeged Festival. As I mentioned last week, the schedule
has already been posted and The Cure are scheduled
for 10-11:30pm.
Tickets
for the LIVE 8 London concert in Hyde Park will be
allocated via a text competition. The competition is
open to UK and Channel Islands'
residents
aged 16 or over.
For the
chance to win a pair of tickets to the London event

July?
A) Berlin
B) Moscow C) Edinburgh

You can
enter as many times as you like for a better chance
of winning. Cost of text is 1.50 + standard text rates.

Update: "just have

support act that names my website as source. I've got
that info from someone who has connections close to that
Band and it was said it's already sure they will play as Cure
support that show. now i've heard from another source they
are still bargaining and it's not confirmed yet."

Some articles about the split
and the still unconfirmed show in Hungary:
"In the hungarian press released some
articles about The Cure. i send the photos of the
articles and here are some comments.
The legendary
The Cure's 2 members have left the band, the
european tour of the band will be in doubt.
............so
the legendery band will probably split up....

Looks like we won't have to
wait much longer for a preview of the 3
piece Cure. The new e-mail from Yahoo! Music Backstage/Pepsi Smash on Yahoo!
has the following listed in their Mark Your
Calendar section:
Wednesday, 6/15 The
Cure Video Interview & Performance
"Second Source" scores again. He/She
said that 2 of the new songs would be on Yahoo! Music, 2 on
another online site, and 1 possibly on a movie soundtrack.
And no, Dave Allen didn't work on these tracks (that didn't come
from "Second Source"). They went even further back in
Cure history for a producer. Of course this is all just EVIL
NASTY FILTHY RUMOR for now. ; )

Roger has posted 'Not Without
You (The Album Leaf remix)' on his website. Excellent! And the
original is even better.
Billy Corgan's album has leaked,
and after hearing 'To Love Somebody',
I have to say it's very good! Love the music
(very Cure-ish), Billy's vocals get better with each
listen (I'm not a big Pumpkins fan, so his voice can grate
at times), and Robert's backing vocals on the chorus blend
perfectly with Billy. I'm sure many will hate it on principle,
but as a "hater" of most of Robert's collaborations, this
was a great surprise. Anyway, it's out there and will probably
be everywhere by the end of the day. Definitely worth tracking
down. Oh, and buying of course. : )
Update: If
you need the lyrics, here they are.
Billy changes a few, and drops every "baby".
Festival updates:
"Preorder for the Berlin open air
has just started:
"I've just been on the site of the
festival The Cure will be playing in Belgium, and
this is what it says (translated free, but best way possible):
"The Lokerse Feesten presents a huge hit! The band
around Robert Smith has just recently gone through
some structural changes, is working on a
new album, and will be playing a few summer festivals,
amongst them the Lokerse Feesten at wednesday the
10th of August 2005. For this festivalday there will
be an exceptional pre-sale. More info will follow soon."
I think this is a huge relief for many fans (Belgian
and others), cause the festival normally only
sells tickets the day itself, and handles the principle
full=full. Luckilly they're smart enough to understand
The Cure isn't just a band, and that such bands
come with exceptional measures..."

Pietro's chart update:
Pornography fell to 189 in France,
