News Archive - July 1999

July 26th

  • Confirmed through official sources (unfortunately): I was hoping that this would turn out to be false and that I wouldn't have to report it, but it is now official: Universal (Polydor) has confirmed that Bloodflowers will be delayed until Feb. 2000. This is not a joke, and I'm sure many of you are quite upset and will not believe it, but is has been verified. You may have noticed that I have been hinting about it over the last week or so, but did not post it until I was 100% sure of the delay. If it is any comfort, there still has been no word from Elektra, but its probably just a matter of time until they announce it as well. One thing that should be noted, this was not The Cure's decision.

  • Confirmed through official sources: More song titles are known - "Maybe Someday", "The Loudest Sound", "Coming Up", "The Last Day of Summer", and "BloodFlowers".

  • July 24th

  • More sources are reporting the release date for Bloodflowers:
  • ICE Magazine On-line: Sept. 21st

Zillo magazine website: Oct. (they also say it will be The Cure's last studio album)

FNAC stores in Paris: Oct. 11th

(Thanks Olivier and Lars. Once again, these dates HAVE NOT been confirmed, and are most likely wrong. I'm hoping to have more about this sometime on Monday or Tuesday.)

  • Another addition the the ever-growing Cure in the workplace list:
  • "The cure plays at my workplace as well. I work at Contempo Casuals and thankfully get to hear Boys Don't Cry and Close to me everyday!!"

    (Thanks Emily)

  • And a couple of more Cure mentions in the media:
  • "The August issue of CMJ New Music Monthly has a quick profile on Metropolis Records, an industrial label founded by Dave Heckman five years ago. When asked about the label's future...

"Heckman says the heart is industrial but 'we're moving a little in the goth direction. I've been more picky about that because I think the good bands in that genre are awesome - Siouxsie & the Banshees, Cure. But a lot of it's very, very cheesy, and a lot of the people in the scene are really weird. I'm always going out meeting kids in black dresses - and a lot of them are guys!' "

CNN has a review of 'Gothic: Four Hundred Years of Excess, Horror, Evil, and Ruin'on their website, and briefly mention The Cure:

"If you are just looking for symbolism on Cure song lyrics (based on the writings of Camus, I was pleased and surprised to find out) or how Alice Cooper came to be, skip to the last chapter. "

    (Thanks Tom & Jennifer)

    July 22nd

  • Confirmed through official sources: In a follow-up to the story below, I've just learned that "due to a recent planning meeting", the international interviews (to promote the new album) that Robert was scheduled to do in late July-early Aug. have been put on hold. New plans will be announced soon. Read into this what you will.

  • Just a brief note about the release date for "Bloodflowers": NONE of the dates floating around have been confirmed by official sources. Initial release dates are often pushed back.

  • July 21st

  • From a post to Descent by Christopher (he wrote to Bob Waugh, a dj at WHFS, about the new album, and this is his reply):
  • "We should have a new single from the Cure in early September, with an album in stores October 12th. It is said to be a throwback to the "darker" side of the Cure, a la Disintingration.

    Thanks for listening to WHFS.

    Bob Waugh"

Please remember that the part about the single and the release date HAVE NOT been confirmed yet. Bob may be speaking of a promo (not commercial) single.

  • The August issue of ICE magazine lists a release date of Sept. 21st for Bloodflowers, but that date is probably inaccurate.
  • (Thanks Brian)

  • Here's something of interest for fans in Mexico:
  • "Today (wednesday july 21st), 94.9 FM radio station in Monterrey, Mexico, which is the Monterrey Tech Radio, the literary program "Juego de Palabras" (words game) will be about horror writer H.P. Lovecraft and will feature gothic music by The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees and Joy Division.

Cure tracks programmed are "Short term effect" and "Pornography", and possibly "Cold".

And an old note: the same radio program recently used "Disintegration" for background music for a program about Jaime Sabines, recognized and famous mexican poet who died recently

It seems that the guys at the program are curefans! (and I know that because I'm one of them heheh)"

    (Thanks Adrian)

  • If you are interested in participating in the Pink Pig project, you better hurry, as there are only 35 songs left!

  • After getting reports of The Cure being played at Ruby Tuesdays & Applebees, I wondered where they would turn up next. Well, it didn't take long to find out:
  • "I work at fredericks of hollywood and occasionally you can hear cogasm being played which is always a joy for me!"

    (Thanks Tanya)

" I work at Arbor Drugs. Soon to be CVS Drugs, its an east coast chain.I have heard just about everything off of galore except Never Enough and Fascination St."

    (Thanks Robert)

"Today while I was getting an oil change at my local Wal Mart I heard The Cure. They played Friday I'm in Love and I was so excited to hear it at Wal Mart that I started yelling at the people telling me my car was done over the intercom!"

    (Thanks Kam)

"I manage the Round Table Pizza joint in San Francisco and we have "Wish" and "Galore" on our jukebox! I will have "Bloodflowers" up when it is available."

    (Thanks Justin)

  • No Cure content: Anna Kowalik (aka Burnie) please contact Juan at bh833366@bed.buenayre.com.ar

  • July 19th

  • More Cure in the media:
  • "The Cure are mentioned in this weeks edition of Tele Moustique (Belgian TV Guide). The caption, including photo of Robert Smith, mentions that the Cure are currently finishing their next album, due out in Fall. They also mention that the album is reminiscent of the style from the Pornography album which they say is Roberts favourite?"

    (Thanks Christoffer)

"Yesterday on the Entertainment channel "E!" There was a segment on E News Daily about Lucy Lawless and her pregnancy. The whole segment they played "Friday I'm in Love" in the background."

    (Thanks Rachel)

"Caught this at www.mrshowbiz.go.com/features/interviews/495_1.html They ask Alyson Hannigan (American Pie) about her high school life and she talks about being depressed and listening to alot of the Cure."

    (Thanks Robert)

  • First Ruby Tuesdays, now Applebees (who will be next?):
  • "Similar to the news about Ruby Tuesdays. I work at a restaurant very much like that one, Applebees. I'm happy to report that I can hear one or two Cure songs on a day to day basis. God bless the satellite we have. I've heard letter to elise, just like heaven, lovesong, if only tonight we could sleep, lovecats, lets go to bed and hot hot hot. I must say, I'm impressed that they play more than friday i'm in love over and over again. Also... it really does make the day that much better for me."

    (Thanks Justin)

  • On the July 4th weekend, 91X in San Diego had their "Fat 500 Countdown" - the 500 best all-time songs as voted by listeners on the station's website. Here's how the Cure fared:

  • 28. Just Like Heaven
    39. Boys Don't Cry
    48. Friday I'm In Love
    167. Let's Go To Bed
    225. Love Cats
    235. Lullaby
    255. A Forest
    291. Killing An Arab
    323. In Between Days
    349. Why Can't I Be You
    353. Love Song
    429. Pictures of You

    (Thanks Jana & Greg)

    July 15th

  • There are a couple of Cure mentions in the new issue of Rolling Stone (Ricky Martin cover). One is a small article on Oleander, and they mention their amped-up cover of the Cure's "Boys Don't Cry". The other is in The Sheffield Report, where he says "Queen Amidala is the real phantom menace of Star Wars-we never know where her parents are or how she got herself a whole planet to boss around at an age when most girls would settle for the phone. But we can see that she's the queen because she walks it and talks it. She's an Elizabethan vampire doll in Virgin Mary drag, living large in an Epcot Center palace obviously built to match her clothes. She looks like the Cure's Robert Smith trick-or-treating as Liz Taylor's Cleopatra, attended by her posse of smashingly accesorized harem girls; and you just know all the ladies' rooms on Naboo have air conditioning and back issues of Vogue..."
  • (Thanks Suprmn1975)

    July 14th

  • Some good news for those of you working at or just dining at Ruby Tuesday restaurants:
  • "Just wanted to let you know about some pleasant Cure info where I work. I'm currently serving tables at a restaurant called Ruby Tuesday, where we recently changed our music system from CD's to a satellite program. Anyway, on the new system there are at least four Cure songs played on the different satellite channels, "Just Like Heaven," "Lovesong," "Friday I'm in Love," and "High." If anyone else happens to work at one of these stores, put the satellite on channel "44," which has all four of these songs played at least once a day on it. It makes the day go by so much easier with good music."

    (Thanks Andrew)

  • Curiosity (plays The Cure) and Cranes will be performing at the "Waremme Capital Rock 99" Festival in the Belgian town Waremme on Saturday September 11th.
  • (Thanks Maciek)

  • I know everyone wants more info on the new album, shows, etc. , but just hold on a bit longer. If we're lucky, we should know more very soon. I will post everything right here just as soon as I can.
  • While we wait though, I've set up a new page to keep track of the info that we do know so far and added a couple of articles that relate to the new album.

    July 13th

  • Want to know what the runner-up prizes in the last Cure contest looks like? Nadine was one of the winners and we got the t-shirt yesterday, so here it is:
  • (Thanks Nadine)

  • And here's a report on Phil Thornalley's latest project:
  • "what have the cure and the spice girls got in common, well there are 2 answers apart from them both being british bands that is. 1) the extra's used in the 'mint car' video were used in the spice girls 'wanna be' promo, filmed in london a week beforehand...and. 2) phil thornalley, has now written a song with 'mel c' from the spice girls.

music week reports - as "ga ga" - mel c's track for the 'big daddy' soundtrack once again proves co-writer phil thornalley continues to suceed while remaining firmly in the background. two years ago the BMG music-published writer was best know for having once been the bass player in the cure. until, that is, natalie imbruglia recorded 'torn' and not only established her own solo career, but made him one of the most in-demand songwriters in the UK. "i just love hearing my songs on the radio. it still does the trick and i still get the buzz i did when i was 18 around the time od the cure," he says."

    (Thanks Chris)

  • Here's a report on the status of the Pink Pig project that Flor, German and Juan are putting together:
  • "Here's how are things going with the project. For more info, visit our updated website

    July 11th

After 10 days of the official release of the Pink Pig project, we can proudly say that 80 songs are being recorded by fans from around the world. In places so distant from each other as Hawaii, Spain, Australia,Mexico, England and Argentina there's people translating their feelings into a unique version of a song of their favourite band:The Cure.

We would like to thank all of you who got involved and are currently working on a song. Thanks a lot for the support and for being part of the project! :)

For the ones that haven't made up their minds yet, we repeat the invitation. Remember that it doesn't matter if you have little musical knowledge (or none! ;).... your imagination and love for The Cure is enough. The idea is to get everybody to take part in the project. We are looking for diversity. This will be one of the coolest things of Pink Pig ... to realize how different people interpret and recreate their favourite Cure songs So, visit our website at

    http://usuarios.interar.com.ar/german/pinkpig/home.htm

check out the song list and pick up one ... many are already gone!

As you know, the idea is to finish up by December .. and we have all our energy set on that :)

    Pink Pig Set --------------

We are also glad to announce that the set will consist of Audio CDs instead of CDRs, as it was first stated. This won't increase the cost at all, and will make a much nicer presentation :)

Around November, we will start taking pre-orders to get an idea of how many sets need to be pressed. The information will appear in the UPDATE section of our website, so keep checking ...

    Again, thanks a lot!

Love Flor, German & Juan Jose"

    (Thanks Flor)

  • I often post other people's Cure-related sightings, but I never seem to have any of my own. That changed this weekend, as Nadine & I took a weekend trip to Biloxi (a small beach vacation/gambling spot on the Mississippi Gulf Coast) and had 2 Cure experiences.
  • The first happened on Saturday at the Treasure Bay casino at around 3 in the morning. We were playing some slots and heard the band in the bar doing a bunch of 80's songs. Nadine turned to me and said "If they do any Cure, I'll kill them". Sure enough, 10 minutes later the band is playing a really bad cover of "Inbetween Days". I didn't catch the name of the band (B-Wire or B something), but they were from Austin, Tx. and except for their Cure cover, they were pretty good.

The 2nd one happened on Sunday afternoon while shopping at the Biloxi Toys R Us. As we were getting ready to leave, "Friday I'm in Love" comes over their P.A.

    July 9th

  • Just a couple of notes:
  • 1. No, I didn't forget "Just Say Yes" in my summary of new song titles, that song was omitted for a specific reason.

    2. Robert is scheduled to do international interviews between the last week of July and the first week of August.

    July 8th

  • Another new song title has been confirmed - "Out of This World". So now we have "Out of This World", "39", "Fall" and "Side by Side".
