  • A new 'Pornography' Deluxe review:

  • "Today's issue of the Austrian newspaper DerStandard features a review of the Pornography Deluxe Edition in it's supplement called Rondo.
The article is very favourable calling Pornography "a modern classic - nothing less." and the 2nd cd "nice but more for the freaks."
I especially like the following bit:
"Before Robert Smith mutated into the goth punchinello with Muppet Show hair-do and Udo Huber[Austrian DJ]-eyeliner he and his band expressed this aesthetical and textual ground-breaking opus."

The review is also online at: http://derstandard.at/?id=2118724"

    (Thanks Markus)

  • An update on the upcoming film Just Like Heaven:

  • "A month or so ago I heard about a movie coming out called Just Like Heaven and I wrote to you and asked if you knew the title was inspired by the Cure song. Well, I just barely got back from an advanced screening of the movie and can tell you it most definitely *is* inspired by The Cure's song. Not only that but the song is in the movie. It appears at the very beginning as a sort of easy listening/classical guitar version with a female singing and the lyrics altered so that they are from a female's perspective (e.g. " . . . the one that makes me scream he said, the one that makes me laugh he said
and threw his arms around my neck . . ., etc.") and the moment the movie cuts to credits at the end it goes right into the version we all know and love. The movie was a decent little romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and some guy that looks like he could be Johnny Knoxville's less obnoxious brother and has a supporting role played by Jon Heder that is very much like his Napoleon Dynamite character (the fro is gone though). I imagine both versions of Just Like Heaven featured in the movie will appear on the movie's soundtrack CD."

Also, David Poland @ The Hot Button has a review of the film.

    Update:
"thought you might like to know that the female vocal version of Just Like Heaven, in the forthcoming film is by Katie Melua, who Brits will know for her excruciatingly dull 'Closest Thing To Crazy'.  She had the third biggest selling artists album of 2004 in the UK too.  Coffee Table nightmare!"

    (Thanks Christian and anonymous)

  • 'Just Like Heaven' will also be featured in a new Playstation 2 Game:

  • Curespotting:

  • "National Public Radio (NPR) profiled Paul Anka's new CD "Rock Swings" this morning (20 July 2005). The CD is a cover of some popular rock songs (Smells Like Teen Spirit, The Love Cats, Jump, etc.). In the profile, snippets of the original are played followed by Anka's version.

One cut covered is (obviously for this list) Love Cats. Anka comments on how he reworked the song.

Here is the link - http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4755657"

    (Thanks Berndt)

"Another version of the BGs song story from the June issue of Illinois Entertainer:

Now, Corgan can sit back proudly and relate wacky career-topping yarns like his recent transatlantic phone call to one of his heroes, Robert Smith, requesting his backing-vocal presence on TheFutureEmbrace (The Cure capo's response on hearing it was a Bee Gees song: ''What ... the ... fuck?!''). But Smith loved the cut so much, he remixed his own version of it, which a reverent Corgan copied for final release."

    (Thanks Lenore)

"In last nights episode of Eastenders Kat tried to win back Alfie’s heart by playing a cat themed mix tape whilst working on her market stall. The
Lovecats was the fist song she played."

    (Thanks Adam)

"I went to Billy Corgan's show in LA on July 13, and they played 2 Cure songs from Pornography era before Billy went on. One of the songs was Descent, but I can't remember what the other one was."

    (Thanks Spencer)

  • A very interesting and different look at the 2005 European Tour:

  • "today i have stumbled upon something great called 'google earth'.  it's a world-wide satellite map that you can access through a piece of software you can download here: http://earth.google.com (windows only for now).

i have mapped the 2005 european festival venues, which you can access by downloading the software first (see above) and then this file:
    http://mapage.noos.fr/odh/FestivalTour2005.kmz.

install google earth, double-click on FestivalTour2005.kmz to open it and then double-click on the various placemarks i have included - they will show up in your 'temporary places' folder in the 'places' area.  it will take you through all the places where the cure will be playing over the summer - you can zoom in and zoom out anywhere."

    (Thanks Olivier)

  • Pietro's chart update:

  • "It seems that after all, even the Cure had a "sales boost" deriving from the Live8 show: "The Cure" has re-entered the French Albums Top 200 at
    197. Logical enough, it was the country they played in. In the first weeks after its release, it initially gained a #4 spot, and then slowly disappeared after 14 charting weeks."

    (Thanks Pietro)

  • Cure cover and mash-up:

  • "Dinosaur Jr. (the ORIGINAL line-up) performed in NYC's Central Park tonight, for the first encore, you guessed it, they did Just Like Heaven."

    (Thanks Joeylom)

"Arjan Writes (http://www.arjanwrites.com/)-- a fantastic music site -- has a Mash-Up of The Cure's "A Forest" with the latest Fischerspooner single "Just Let Go."  It's pretty good!"

  • Goth City are having a Berlin aftershow party for the Berlin show.

  • (Thanks Wilco)

  • Curespotting:

  • "After the LIVE8, there has been all this fuss about Robert's make-up. I have found another article about some LIVE8 celebrities, and they make a
comment about Robert asking him to give up his lipstick and more.

From the article "Live8 not so legends"

"And we think the Cure's Robert Smith, while incredibly talented, should think about giving away the lippie, eye makeup and whatever substance
that's making him sweat like a wild boar."

To read the complete article go to: http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,15815552%255E28957,00.html"

    "From Exzibit.net:

Looking at British band The Cure. How have they survived the media despite being media shy, and what Cure songs you should definately check out.

    (Thanks Tempest)

"They played the "Lullaby" bass and guitar instrumental lead-in on the British Open this afternoon.  Good lead-in music all day, capped off by The Cure."

    (Thanks Stan)

"I've had this Curespotting for some time now... any surfers out there?  Pacific Longboarder magazine, vol. 8 no. 2, has featured on the cover 3
prime longboarders (Alex Knost, CJ Nelson and Jai Lee ); Jai is standing with a Cure surfboard- the classic "Boys Don't Cry" poster printed on
his board.  The article following asks about what music the guys are into. Jai Lee states immediately that "Robert Smith and The Cure are specials".   The magazine cover is worth seeing- check it out!"

    (Thanks Renee)

"friday i attended u2 at the amsterdam arena in holland, just before u2 entered the stage, inbetween days was played, many people where singing
along with it, which was very cool !!"

"In Between Days" was played before the July 9 U2 show at the Stade de France in Paris, France.  Don't know if it has been played on other
tourdates or if the band chose it or not."

  • Ticket update for Istanbul:

  • "An update on the Istanbul tickets: one-day tickets have recently been made available for 40,750,000 TRL.  That's only 8,750,000 TRL (5.45 EUR)
cheaper than the two-day pass, though.

To add to the confusion, Biletix told me they would mail me my tickets (abroad) even though it apparently is against their policy - and I had not asked for that."

    (Thanks Olivier)

  • Free ticket for the Saint-Malo show:

  • "I have one ticket for the Cure gig in Saint-Malo on the 13th of August that I'd like to give away for free. I've decided to go to Lokeren and Berlin
instead and just want to make someone happy.. Feel free to send me an e-mail and next week I'll let you know if you've won it."

    (Thanks Pamela)

  • Cure cover:

  • "I checked out the reunited Dinosaur Jr. in Orlando last night, and they played their famed cover of Just Like Heaven as a first encore. Lots of
fun to see that one live, and it ended just as spontaneously in person as it did on the album. I'd always just assumed the tape cut off and they decided to release it that way."

    (Thanks drqshadow)

  • Curespotting:

  • "A bit about the BeeGees song in an interview with Billy
    (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/index.cfm?c_id=6&ObjectID=10334869)

When you asked him to sing backing vocals on the song, did Robert Smith  [of the Cure] laugh?

Oh yeah. I basically told him just please listen to it and if you don't want to do it, that's fine. A few days later he phoned me and said, "I listened to it. I love it and it's fantastic." Most people take me so seriously — they don't get it. There really is some joy in that song.

    From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram
    (http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/entertainment/12074112.htm)

By Todd Camp and Robert Philpot
    THEY NEED AID, TOO

Last weekend's Live 8 concerts were meant to raise awareness of problems in famine-stricken African nations. So send a check to a hunger-fighting
charity, and then another to these guys, who ain't lookin' so hot... It was bound to happen with all that makeup he wears -- the Cure's Robert Smith is starting to resemble Bette Davis."

    (Thanks Lenore)

  • An update on the Designers Against AIDS shirt:

  • "I asked DAA. They wrote: "Hi Michael, We don't know the shop addresses in Germany yet, that will happen end of this month and they will be in the shops in the middle of September."

I think it will be the same in other countries. It seems, they wont sell the shirts online..."

    (Thanks Michael)

  • This site has download links for pretty much every performance at Live 8. Get what you want before "The Man" shuts it down.

  • Update: "Thanks for the link to the page with the addresses of the AOL streams. This allowed me to discover more information that I thought everyone might be interested in. The links posted are for the MOV versions. I've now also discovered all the links for the Real Player format. People may be interested in these because they are easier to convert, are smaller, and more compatible with PC's in general.

For example, here is a link for a MOV file:

    http://pdl.stream.aol.com/aol/us/aolmusic/specials/2005/live8/paris/paris_052_thecure_open_dl.mov

By changing 4 things in the URL, you can get Real Media version:

    rtsp://demand1.stream.aol.com/aol/us/aolmusic/specials/2005/live8/paris/paris_052_thecure_open_bb8.rm

I really think people might find this info useful, so I thought I'd share it with you."

  • Musictap has a review of the SS/Faith/Pornograpy reissues.

  • (Thanks Mark)

  • Curespotting:

  • "The Monday, July 5 2005 New York Times had an essay about the live8 event. There was a picture of Robert and a mention of his "moaning about
    angst". "

    (Thanks Berndt)

    July 5th

  • AOL has now posted the individual clips of each song by every performer at Live 8.

  • (Thanks Olivier and Greg)

  • The Cranes website confirms that they will be supporting The Cure at the Sept. 1st show in Athens, Greece.

  • (Thanks Jan)

  • An update on that Designers Against AIDS shirt and clearing up a mystery about another shirt we'll probably be seeing A LOT of this summer:

  • "I believe it was your site that mentioned Robert designing a shirt for Designers Against AIDS. Well, this morning I finally got their website to work on my laptop and they have Robert's design up. It's an edited version of the picture of the dolls of himself and Mary that he took for a magazine article that I remember seeing in your gallery. Anyways, here's a link to a photo of the shirt:
    http://beautywithoutirony.typepad.com/photos/designers_against_aids_ts/p1010007_1.html
I'm looking into how and where to buy one. The site www.designersagainstaids.com doesn't offer much help with that other than a list of places that were interested in selling them....but it does say that Robert had planned to wear his shirt for the Live 8 performance. If he did, I missed it!

There was a lot of confusion on The Cure's message boards about Robert's "CE" on his shirt. Well, watching The Cure's Live 8 performance provided a big clue. A friend of mine on deviantart.com helped me put it together. If you noticed on the back of his shirt at the performance, it said: "YOUR CHOI" Now add that "CE" to the end of it. "YOUR CHOICE". I saw Bill's souncheck pictures and noticed that Robert had on a different
one with the message "MY CHOICE".

But where's the BAD CHOICE shirt? : ) Now then, who's going to decode Porl's jacket? : )

    (Thanks "Alexia")

  • Cure cover:

  • "I was at The Get Up Kids' final show on July 2 in Kansas City, MO.  During the encore, they played their cover of Close to Me.  It was awesome and really energized the crowd."

    (Thanks Andi)

  • Curespotting:

  • "In Nick Hornby's new bestselling book, "A Long Way Down", there's a fleeting reference to The Cure "In Between Days". Nick Hornby is
well-known for several music references in his book, but i think it's the first time The Cure get such clear and sympathetic nod."

    (Thanks Claude)

    July 4th

  • More Live 8 coverage:

If you click on  "Le concert Live8 à Versailles" at the right of the window you can see The Cure during the soundchecks and at the end of the video a ninterview with Robert."

(Thanks to Toberr  @ A Pink Dream)

"I've put some cure pics on my website www.gaelleberi.com under works and then the cure. Hope you'll like them."

    (Thanks Gaelle)

  • And here's an update on who showed what:

  • "I can tell you that the Italian channel SKY aired Open and One hundred years, but then after just a few seconds of End it switched to Philadelphia."

    (Thanks Pietro)

"The BBC showed Open on BBC 1 after the US concert had finished.

For those with satellite, the BBC also had extra channels running. They didn't have a dedicated showing for the Versailles concert, but they did
have a pick'n'mix channel, which showed the Cure's main set. They'd switched to Toronto by the time the Cure came back on though, so that hasn't been shown on BBC at all.

The BBC does have an hour long 'The Best Of Live 8' program running on BBC 3 at 8 o'clock every day this week. I think this is showing some
footage from all the concerts (the description mentions Placebo), so there's a good chance that will show The Cure at some point."

    (Thanks Rob, Sean and Claude)

"In response to the query on your website... XM's Coverage of Live 8 was generally pretty good. As the schedules for all the shows were all over
the place, you could tell that the XM DJs had no idea what was going on, who was coming on next, etc. At about 1pm Pacific Time I stuck to the
"Paris" channel (each city was given it's own channel) and just waited it out. Sometime shortly after 3pm, they announced that The Cure were taking the stage, but what followed was an awful mess of tape-playback and instrument sound checks with channels turning on and off, patches being plugged and unplugged.

They cut away from that temporarily to bring us some coverage of London, then cut back just in time for The Cure's first notes to be heard. What
followed was a fairly lousy mix; as far as live-Cure mixes go this one was very muddy and unfocused, but the overall fidelity was pretty good.
Unfortunately, XM only played the first three songs, and then announced they didn't know whether or not there'd be an encore (apparently there
was, but I listened for about another half-hour waiting, and it was not broadcast - instead, they went again to the London feed for some of Pink Floyd).

When I later checked COF and learned that there WAS indeed an encore, I was very disappointed (personally, I've been DYING to hear "Just Like
Heaven" sans keyboards... Impossible???). Overall I have to give XM credit for very thorough, high quality, and well-meaning coverage of Live 8 in general, but when it came to The Cure they kind of dropped the ball."

    (Thanks Jordan)

  • Bill does it again! He's got some fantastic photos from Live 8 Versailles:

  • Ok, so we know MTV/VH1 didn't air anything from The Cure (and their overall coverage was pathetic at best), but what about anyone else? Did the BBC tv or radio have anything? What about the XM radio channel for Versailles?

  • Also, for anyone interested in getting some of the videos from the various shows, especially from London, you need to check the alt.binaries.mpeg.video.music newsgroup. Some really high quality stuff is currently being posted. As of this morning, you can get Coldplay (a 1.9GB file but fantastic quality!), Annie Lennox, Madonna, U2 & Paul McCartney (just Sgt. Pepper, not the full U2 set), Neil Young, Pink Floyd and one song from Bjork. And there's more to come.

  • Bruno's server seems to be down for the time being, but thanks to Heron, a mirror site for the Live 8 files is on the way.
  • Update: Ok, the mirror for the mp3s is up. The video will be there later today.

  • Robert backstage at Live 8:

  • "There are a couple pictures of Robert signing autographs at Versailles at this site:

  • And more Live 8 soundcheck pictures here.

  • Getty Images has some photos of The Cure (Placebo and Shakira too) in Versailles, Robert before the show, and great shots from Live 8 in general.

  • Some wrap-up coverage of Live 8:

  • "An article from The Guardian that explains the 3 gig dash that Youssou N'Dour and Dido did yesterday at Live 8. Last paragraph explains why The Cure didn't headline as expected.

"We're running two hours late, but calls are made to the organisers at the Palais de Versailles and the running order there is re-arranged. As the London show finishes, 200,000 fans in France greet the Senegalese superstar and his counterpart from Islington at the end of an incredible day."

"This is from the today's newspaper The Province of BC, Canada a short comment of Versailles show:

    "Paris

In Versailles, an eclectic lineup including Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and The Cure united at a concert set amid one of the Frances's greatest
symbols of opulence - The Chateau of Versailles.

British rock trio Muse kicked off the event singing from a stage set in the front court of the 17th century palace that was once home to King Louis XIV.

A crowd of 60,000 crammed the tree-lined boulevard leading up to the palace, falling silent during two soaring arias by Bocelli and then dancing in time to tunes by Tina Arena and Latn superstar Shakira."

"I've been checking the blogs from LIVE 8.com, and there are some comments about The Cure show. They pretty much describe The Cure's entrance, perfomance and when they left and came back to play the encore. Also there some other few comments from other fans who attended the show and similar blogs for  other artists who participated in the Versailles show.

    July 2nd

  • And so the new Cure have debuted at Live 8 with a set of 'Open', '100 Years' and 'End', followed by an encore of 'Just Like Heaven' and 'Boys Don't Cry'.  Don't know what in the hell kept happening to 'Tape', but someone screwed it up at least 3 times by my count. I'll have reviews, photos, etc. up on the Live 8 page as soon as they are sent in.

  • Some comments from Robert (and new bass player Steve Gallop...HA!) on Live 8:

  • "Not sure if you already have this or not but a clip of Robert talking to Reuters "2:22) July 2 - Robert Smith of the Cure and French tennis-champ-turned-singer Yannick Noah tell Reuters why Live 8 might make the politicians listen."

British singer Robert Smith, the spidery-haired, thickly-eyelined, lip-sticked front-man of the world's most eminent Goth band, the Cure was asked by Reuters if he believed the concerts might have any effect on politicians set to meet in Scottland.

"I mean they're professional politicians and by nature there will come a point where they'll look around and if for no other reason than they want to win people's votes they'll do something.

They may not be like morally, feel like they're morally obliged to do it but they should be they're the ones that are able to change things."

Cure bassist Steve Gallop echoed Lombard's sentiment telling Reuters:

"I don't think musicians as such can change anything but they can bring attention to everything so I mean it would be particularly churlish and you'd have to be a bit demented to say no".

Doubtless the thousands of fans for whom The Cure is this evening's top draw agree.

    (Thanks N.)

    And this from Yahoo/AP:

Robert Smith, lead singer of The Cure, said he was convinced the massive turnout of the global concerts would send a message.

"By mobilizing millions of people, you're effectively saying to a few very powerful people that there is a groundswell and it isn't going to go away," Smith told The Associated Press backstage. "There's too many people involved. There's too much anger for things to just remain as they are."

"The gulf between rich and poor isn't unbridgeable. There is enough to go around," said Smith, whose band was scheduled to close the 25-act event.

  • Placebo and The Cure to do a song together tonight?

  • "Placebo & the cure are expected to perform a song together tonight at the paris show...
    http://www.aol.de/index.jsp?cid=1027720657&pageId=3&sg=Musik_special_Live8"

Update: Despite what was listed there, they didn't do a song together.

    (Thanks Koyldo)

  • I also have to say that Razorlight are pretty terrible.

  • I just want to say that Shakira has some interesting..."moves". : )

  • Look away now if you don't want to know what The Cure will most likely play tonight:

  • "Soundchecks just over: open, 100 years, end."

    (Thanks Olivier)

"The Cure is actually playing for the Soundchecks in Versailles (at 15 pm here in France). The french TV M6 just put a part of this soundcheck live ! This is a screenshot showing Robert and Porl !"

    (Thanks Jerome)

And another photo from the soundcheck:

  • Good morning and welcome to Live 8 & the debut of the first new Cure lineup in a decade. Watching the Berlin concert now, while waiting for London to go live. While we wait, take a look at the Cure article in today's Daily Mirror Live 8 pullout.

  • (Thanks Warren)

    July 1st

  • Some info on the Italian show:

  • "The city which will host the italian date is Taormina, and the event is a part of the "Taormina Arte Festival 2005".

Ticketone.it says the presale will start soon, so I suggest italian fans to check here (http://www.ticketone.it/newsComplete.jsp?idCat=51&cdNews=3611)."

    (Thanks Pietro)

  • Robert has confirmed (as of thursday, they could move things around again) some of the times for Versailles:

  • Starts around 4pm
    Muse 5:30 - 5:50 pm
    Shakira 7:25 - 7:45 pm
    Placebo 9:50 - 10:10 pm
The Cure 10:35 - 10:55pm (but hints that they might break the curfew)

So in the US that would be 4:35pm eastern, 3:35pm central, 2:35pm mountain and 1:35pm pacific.

    (Thanks Lenore)

  • Some info on getting to Versailles:

  • "From Paris, you can either take "RER C" direction Versailles Rive Gauche - Chateau de Versailles.
The RER C stops at many places in Paris including :
Gare d'Austerlitz, Saint Michel, Musee d'orsay, Invalides, Pont de l'Alma, Champs de Mars, Javel & Bd Victor
See the plan here (look for the yellowish-brownish line on the borders of the river Seine):
    http://www.ratp.info/orienter/f_plan.php?loc=reseaux&nompdf=metro&fm=gif
Required time from Paris St Michel until Versailles is around 45 min.
More info about the RER can be found in english here : http://www.ratp.info/informer/anglais/index.php

Or you can also take the regular train from Paris Montparnasse station direction Versailles Chantiers.
The direct trains require only 11 minutes, but then you have to walk a bit more from the station till the site of the gig.
I made a little plan to visualize where is Versailles Chantier station, compared to Versailles Rive Gauche - Chateau de Versailles station here:
    http://www.pbase.com/image/45550050/original

More information concerning the trains from Paris Montparnasse can be found on the french railway company website in english here:
    http://www.sncf.com/indexe.htm
Look for the Transilien (around paris)."

    (Thanks Bill)

  • As a sort of balance to what some say is too much "pro" Live 8 coverage here, this article shows some of the hypocrisy involved with this event. Personally, I find it all rather naive and misguided, but wish them all the best with it. Surprisingly, I think Noel Gallagher said it best:
  • "Correct me if I'm wrong, but are they hoping that one of these guys from the G8 is on a quick 15 minute break at Gleneagles (in Scotland) and sees ANNIE LENNOX singing SWEET DREAMS and thinks, 'F**k me, she might have a point there, you know?'

"KEANE doing SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW and some Japanese businessman going, 'Aw, look at him... we should really f**king drop that debt, you know.'

"It's not going to happen, is it?"

At the end of the day, it's just a worldwide rock show that we can all watch. If it ends up helping even one person out of poverty, starvation, etc., then it was well worth it. Now, let's all hold hands and sing "All You Need Is Love". : )

I wrote this at 3am this morning and forgot to include my main point - It's the first new Cure lineup in a decade, of course I'm going to give it a lot of coverage!

  • 'Close To Me' on a new compilation cd:

  • "There is new compilation out here in Austria celebrating the 10 year anniversary of "Forestglade Festival" where The Cure once played a few
years ago. This CD features amongst other songs by acts the studio version of "Close to me". So it´s not really worth buying it."

    (Thanks Gerald)

  • Later...with Jools Holland repeat on Ovation:

  • "Just wanted to let you know that The Cure are going to be on "Later with Jools Holland" on the Ovation channel,  Saturday, July 9th at 10:00 p.m., in NY it's channel 83."

    (Thanks Despayre)

  • Curespotting:

  • "In today's Daily Mail(uk newspaper, 1st July) there is an article about Live 8, and there is a picture of Robert, but no mention at all of The Cure or their Versailles appearence..."

    (Thanks JC)

"This is a short review from the today's newspaper The Province  (BC, Canada) about the next  LIVE 8 concerts in every country. They mention
The Cure as the strongest act for Versailles.

    "France-Palais de Versailles, Paris
    10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Maybe The Cure can remedy the somewhat lightweight lineup the French have mustered? It's kind of their army." (pag. C3, 06/30/05) "

"On AOL Music today there's a quiz regarding people's knowledge of Live 8 performers
    http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/special2/article.adp?id=20050621112809990033

Question 5 is about The Cure:

5 .  On what book did The Cure base their song 'Killing an Arab'?
    'The Stranger' by Albert Camus
    'Moby Dick' by Herman Melville
    'Lolita' by Vladimir Nabokov
'Midnight's Children' by Salman Rushdie "

"Tonight (Wed 29th) the intro of "In Between Days" was used for like 15 seconds in Anderson Cooper 360  (CNN) . They were showing a survey regarding Tom Cruise's unusual behaviour and his beliefs as a Scientologist. Anderson Cooper and The Cure's song together, just made my night!"
