News Archive - July 2004

July 31st

  • Robert is one of the judges/listmakers for this year's Shortlist Music Awards. Read the article at Billboard.

  • Clearing up the mystery of Simon's new flag:

  • "In nadine's wpb review she mentioned something about simon having a different banner on his amp, but she didn't know what kind it was. i was
looking at your antioch pics and you can clearly see that it's a reading fc banner, thanks to this pic."

    (Thanks Asa)

  • Curiosa in Toronto to be broadcast live and uncut by The Edge 102.1:

  • "Toronto radio station 102.1 the Edge, announced yesterday they will broadcast a live concert featuring rock legends The Cure.  The concert will be held at the Curiosa Festival at the Molson Amphitheater on Monday, Aug.9.  the entire Cure set will be broadcast live and uncut, with no interruptions and in real time starting at 9pm.  This will be the Cure's only live radio concert broadcast in North America.  Alan Cross, program director at The Edge says, "We're thrilled that The Cure and Universal Music Canada can help us create this unique event."

"I'm hoping it will be like the best day out there anyone has this summer, if not, you know, this decade," frontman Robert Smith says about the tour.
Announcer Dave Bookman will broadcast live from backstage, interviewing many of the bands featured  on the tour."

(Thanks to John and everyone else who sent this in)

  • Ideal Copy (who are quickly becoming the favorite record store of COF readers, judging by the e-mails I get) is upgrading orders of the US 'TEOTW' singles to UK singles:

  • Thank you so much for ordering the US release of the new Cure CD Single "The End Of The World" from The Ideal Copy!

As you may have heard, the US release has been pushed back 'til August 3rd due to a mastering error. You may ALSO have heard that the US release does NOT include the video for "The End Of The World". However, the European release includes the same 3 audio tracks as the delayed US release but ALSO includes the video for "The End Of The World"

As Cure fans ourselves, we think it's pretty crappy that the US release omits this crucial bonus video - and we're pretty sure you'd like to get
the CD single as soon as possible...

SO - we have decided to automatically UPGRADE your order for the US CD Single to the European CD Single FREE OF CHARGE -- AND better still -- it's shipping tomorrow (** see note below)!!

Not only will you get the superior European release AT NO EXTRA COST TO YOU - you'll even get it earlier!!

For those of you who would actually prefer to have the US release - please email me back as soon as possible and we will fill your order as
you originally intended (next week, obviously) - but - we figured the bulk of you would be pretty happy to hear about this!

And, as always, thank you so much for supporting The Ideal Copy! We really appreciate it.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us anytime.

    Cheers!

    Jason, Chris & Dayna

*PLEASE NOTE - we are only offering this upgrade to our North American customers - we figure if someone from outside North America ordered the US version, they must WANT ths US version*

**ALSO PLEASE NOTE - if you ordered the US 7" Single your order won't ship until next week when the US 7" is released, but you'll still be
upgraded to the European CD Single (unless we hear back from you)

    (Thanks Joey)

    Update:
"Idealcopy.com upgraded customers who pre-ordered the single before July 20th. The UK version is now available on its own as well as the corrected US version."

    (Thanks Chris)

  • Here's an article from The Tennessean. And another one from The Cleveland Free Times.

  • (Thanks Nick, James and Stephanie)

  • A quick Curiosa merchandise update before I forget, they have added Tour Books for $20 and 2 different wallets for $30 each. The $10 stickers are actually tattoos, and the $40 handbags were not for sale in Antioch and Atlanta. They might have sold out of their supply and had to order some more.

  • Robert was a guest DJ at 99X in Atlanta on thursday:

  • "Oh yeah, in Atlanta, on 99X, Robert came in for about 1/2 hour and picked some songs to play (AFI Girl's not Grey, Blink 182's Down, Auf der Maur song, and Pictures of You.  He took a couple of calls, got some questions about how he feels concerning shorter set (said it was a trade off for doing the festival, but went on to say that he has gone on tours where the band has spent more than they have made on curfew fines), and took a call about the Gormenghast trilogy of all things.  It was good to hear him so upbeat, and it was great to see the Cure having such a wonderful time playing the music that is obviously as dear to them as it is to us!"

    (Thanks James)

  • Some Cure radio contests:

  • MTV2 Europe will be airing the making of 'TEOTW' at 9:30pm and The Cure live in Milan at 10pm tonight.

  • (Thanks Yan and Kallie)

  • As most of you should know by now, the Mexico City show sold out in record time and a second show has been added on Sept. 5th:

  • "I have a friend in Mexico and he had the hard task to get us tickets. I live in Canada so we will be going to all the Mexican shows plus the
Curiosa one in Toronto. This guy did line up for the first concert in Mexico City for 18 hours!! The link I am sending you contains information about how 20,000 tickets were sold in about 2 and a half hours. A 2nd Date is confirmed on September 5th. So far the 2nd date has sold out more than 3000 tickets. They make a stupid comparison about Back Street Boys selling tickets as fast but I wont get into it.
    http://www.esmas.com/espectaculos/musica/381194.html"

    (Thanks Luis)

"I wanted to inform you that we lucky guys at Mexico City got a second date, Sunday September 5th. Tickets sold out for the first date in around 3 hours and they started selling tickets for Sunday as soon as it sold out. I am not surprised. The Cure has a huge following in Mexico City and they have never ever been here. I expected an opening for a second date at least but not as soon. Hell, they can sell out the whole week here. I bought tickets for both dates, although I will not go on Saturday (lucky nephew and niece). Now I will be able to go since my best friend's wedding is gonna take place on Saturday. On the other hand, let me inform you the ticket sale for the Monterrey concert (Sept 2nd) is a mess. On Wednesday tickets were to start selling, but it didn't happen. Changed to Thursday. On Thursday same deal. No date for ticket sales as of yet, all I heard was someday next week. But now I won't go to Monterrey, or will I?"

    (Thanks Esteban)

Update: "Just to let you know that no more tix are available for the 2nd show in Mexico City. Considering the arena capacity is around 20,000, we can assume that 40,000 tix were sold in roughly 24 hours. However, I wonder how many are in hands of truly Cure fans, a very few I bet ... I'm sure we'll see thousands of seats available at 2, 3 or more times its original price outside the venues during the show evenings ... so far, people are currently selling 120 Usd tickets in 600 Usd."

    (Thanks Ivan)

  • And more info for Monterrey:

  • "It's me again, please correct the info: I've telephoned the ticket company (SuperBoletos) who manages The Cure concert in Monterrey and
they still don't know when the sale will start, whether monday 2nd august or any other day throughout next week. Here is though, an important note for all fans in the area and others coming from abroad: if you telephone the company this week, they collect your name and phone number. They promise to call you as soon as the sale starts and to give you preference (God knows if this will be true). Seating distribution may be consulted here:
http://www.arenamonterrey.com/wtweb/web_page/asientos.html The one corresponding to The Cure will be "Show Lateral" Phone numbers for Super Boletos are:  81-51-38-06 (Monterrey metro area); 01-800-26-53-867 (outside Monterrey metro area)
    "

    (Thanks Adrian)

  • Some Cure articles in recent magazines:

  • "There's a new interview in the latest Q magazine (http://www.q4music.com/nav?page=q4music.about.currentissue). Interview in the magazine only..."

    (Thanks Steven)

"The Cure are mentioned in a new Rolling Stone article (August 19 issue with Lindsay Lohan on the cover).  The article is about 1/2 page long, "Summer Ticket Prices Slashed: Van Halen, The Cure and others cut to as low as ten dollars due to slow sales".  There are no pictures of the band.

The Cure are in the August 2nd issue of People magazine (with Martha Stewart on the cover).  The article is about ½ page long and has a brief interview with Robert and a picture of the band."

    Capacity: 17,200 comfortably seated
NOTE: I'd never been in this Arena (neither Sports' Palace in Mexico City), but I've heard (A LOT) that accoustic is great in the Monterrey Arena... not the same for the Sports' Palace though. :(

    (Thanks Leobasita)

  • There's a new interview with Robert (done by Davey Havok of AFI) in the Sept. issue of Alternative Press.

  • (Thanks James)

  • Interview on German radio tonight:

  • "tonight (26.07.at 20:00 cet) on german radio-station "FRITZ" there is an interview with robert and they will talk about the new album. more
informations here (in german): http://www.fritz.de/_/programm/soundgarden/abend/detail_jsp/key=30617.html "

    (Thanks Olli)

Update: "The Radio Fritz special didn't contain (m)any news... the same subjects as always: the title of the album, the cover,...only interesting things: robert didn't rule out the possibility of another album - which would possibly be titled 'The Cure Volume 2' + and the band + Ross would love to go into the studio again in the not too distant future. He mentioned as well, that his amount of words he can sing + that work musically is limited + used 'Where the birds always sing' as an example: lyrically one of the best things he has ever written, musically by far the weakest on 'Bloodflowers'
Songs played during that special: The end of the world, Maybe someday, alt.end, A forest (2001 acoustic version), Lost, Where the birds always sing,
    Taking off, Never."

    (Thanks Dennis)

  • A note for you Melissa Auf Der Maur fans:

  • "I also got to meet melissa auf der mar just before the cure went on. it seems she's having a booth set up right before they go onstage. signing
    autographs promoting her album.."

    (Thanks Jason)

  • Curespotting:

  • "I was just checking out the Alkaline Trio Forum ~ a message (Fri Jul 09, 2004 2:55 pm ) from their drummer, Derek Grant ends with: "oh, do
yourself a favor and pick up the new cure album. " here's the link: http://blood-pact.com/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1196"

    (Thanks Joey)

"This is an extract from bass player Richard Jones' latest diary entry on Stereophonics.com (http://www.stereophonics.com/band/) : "MOVE festival,
last gig of the year for us and we thought that it just might be good weather. was it my arse! It rained all day and all night and the crowd stayed for every minute. Good bunch of acts on over the four days and we managed to catch a few, watched a hour of The Cure the night before and enjoyed them banging through their set of classics and new songs."

    Cool...!!!"

    (Thanks Barbara)

"In a french magazine called "Science et Vie Junior", this month's issue is a special one dealing with strange phenomenas (near death experiences, UFOs, quantic physics...) ; a very good article is talking about mental illnesses : a few lines are about a girl who knew a sort of short desease while believing Arthur Rimbaud was talking to her and ... "Robert Smith, the singer of The Cure, came out of a poster, sat in her room and a chat for 20 minutes". Funny, isn't it. (NB : the girl is completly OK now). "

    (Thanks David)

    July 25th

  • Robert interview in the New York Post.

  • (Thanks Mike)

  • 'TEOTW' debuts at #25 in the UK Top 40 singles chart.

  • (Thanks Marco, Ali, Brandon)

  • Just heard from Nadine again, and here are some of the prices for the merchandise:

  • Mouse Pad - $20 (album cover)
    Hoodies - $65 (1 black)
    Long sleeve - $35 (1 grey)
Baby and reg t's - $35 (one "curiosa" and about 8 others, black, pink, blue)
Small messenger bags - $40 (2 - red heart or white swirl)
    Tattoos - $10 (hearts)
Leather wristband - $22 (yellow The Cure)
Cap - $30 (black with The Cure on it)
Bucket hat - $35 (Grey with The Cure on it)
    Poster - $15
    Pins & keychain - $7
Fanny packs - $45 (same designs as msgr bags)

Also, she got a chance to talk to Robert last night for about 30 minutes and he did say that they'll be doing a different setlist tonight,  asked her if she had a request, and she picked Jupiter Crash or Like Cockatoos. So if they play either of those tonight, you know who to thank or blame. : )

  • Final results of the "Which of the bonus tracks from 'The Cure' is your favorite?" poll:

  • Going Nowhere (331) 32%
    This Morning (307) 29%
    Truth Goodness & Beauty (306) 29%
    Fake (96) 9%

    Total Votes: 1041

  • I know a lot of you are disappointed about last night's setlist, but it's just one night! Give them a few shows before you get too "bummed out" about it. They always start a bit safe, then start getting more adventurous as the tour progresses. Remember , they have somewhere between 50-75 songs to choose from, and have only played 20 so far. There's a lot more to come.  : )

  • Here's a scan of the Q review of 'The Cure'.

  • (Thanks MickelCure)

  • Some interviews with Robert from the Tampa Tribune, Sun-Sentinel, The Star Ledger and Ireland On-Line.

    July 24th

  • Just got a call from Nadine in West Palm and here are some of the notes she gave me:

  • The time schedule posted on the gates was as follows:

    4pm - Doors
    5 - 5:25pm - Head Automatica (Stage 2)
    5:30 - 6pm - Mogwai (Stage 1)
    6:05 - 6:30pm - Cooper Temple Clause (Stage 2)
    6:35 - 7:05pm - The Rapture (Stage 1)
    7:10 - 7:40pm - Auf Der Maur (Stage 2)
    7:45 - 8:25pm - Interpol (Stage 1)
    8:30 - 9pm - Thursday (Stage 2)
    9:15 - 11pm - The Cure (Stage 1)
    11pm - Curfew

The Cure have a ton of merchandise. At least 8 different shirts (including all of the "character" and "swirly" ones we've already seen) and a special Curiosa Tour shirt with all of the bands on it. They also have caps, bucket hats, a messenger bag ($40), "baby doll" shirts, keychains, maybe a mousepad (or the 7" single, she wasn't sure), and more. So bring a LOT of money. : )

Here's the setlist for Interpol: Obstacle 1, Say Hello To The Angels, Evil, NYC, Roland, Slow Hands, Leif Erickson, NARC, PDA.

The stage design doesn't look to be anything too special , just a couple of arcs over the stage for the lights and a white curtain behind them. Jason's drum kit is all silver, and Simon doesn't have his England flag over his gear anymore, but he does have one for a football (soccer) team, though she couldn't read what it said.

Nadine will call me with the setlist shortly after they finish, and it will be posted on the WPB page.

  • Just checked TM for Tampa, and there are still some excellent seats left. I just pulled 2 seats in 102 (center), Row E, then pulled up two pit tickets. If you've been waiting, now's the time to buy.

  • To everyone going to this weekend's Curiosa shows, have a great time! Please send in a review, photos, etc. if you can, and try to let us all know the time schedule for the 2 stages. Also, let us know what sort of merchandise they have and the prices, and what you thought of the other bands. Thanks, and have fun!

  • Pit tickets for Phoenix, Nashville, Chicago, San Diego, Camden and Denver:

  • "I have two extra pit tickets for the Camden, NJ Curiosa show this Sunday 8/1.  Face value or best offer. Email me if interested."

"I still have two pit tickets (next to each other) for the Sunday, August 1 Camden, NJ show. Unfortunately, my friends are not as interested as I
hoped.  Of course, I'd liked to get back the face value I paid ($92 each), but I will offer a discount if needed.  I will be at the show, so I can definitely
meet the buyer for the exchange. E-mail here."

    (Thanks Joe)

Yes, I'm changing my ticket sales policy, at least for now. So if you have pit tickets (pit tickets only!) for sale (at face value!), let me know and I'll post it. Also, let me know when they're sold, so that I can remove your listing.

  • Looks like there's been a change to that Resident Evil 2 soundtrack. The Cure will still be on it, but they've changed their track from 'alt.end' to 'Us Or Them'. Read the story at Billboard.

  • (Thanks Andrew)

  • I've been hearing that sales for Curiosa at The Gorge are very poor so far, the Amnesty International auction doesn't even have a bid for that show as I write this, and now comes word of a possible venue change for the show:

  • "a friend of ours was in washington today & heard the end's dj talking about the cure's gorge show... (as you know the end is presenting the show along with h.o.b.) he mentioned that despite $20 tix the show may end up with a change of venue. possibly the white river amphitheatre... although there is no official word, i thought it was important enough to pass it on. the gorge is a 5 hour drive for us, but for others making hotel arrangements, they may want to hold off a few more days."

Has anyone else heard anything about this?

    (Thanks Jamie & Robi)

  • Here it is, Roger & Simon in the Nashville Rage

  • The Cure are an Unhappy Band

Robert Smith and crew roll into Starwood

Things are going remarkably well for The Cure these days. Despite a slump in the record and touring industries, this highly influential UK five-piece are in the middle of a resurgence in popularity. It is an especially uplifting situation considering that the band is close to its third decade as a music-making entity, yet, unlike the other senior citizens who can claim that kind of career longevity, these guys are still considered cool.

You can see their video on MTV2. Their self-made Curiosa festival is actually selling tickets (in stark contrast to this year's ill-fated Lollapalooza tour). And while most of the bands and artists who first arrived on the scene at the same time as The Cure have long since vacated the realm of radio, The Cure's latest single (The End of The World) is climbing up to the band's old, familiar spot at the top of the charts.
With all that, why are The Cure so unhappy?

When The Rage caught up with The Cure at their rehearsal studio in the UK, their enthusiasm for the upcoming festival and their exuberance at the success of their single were evident, but when talk turned to the making of their new self-titled record, the mood changed.
The big news about The Cure's new album so far has had nothing to directly with its content. It has focused more on their controversial choice to work with nu-metal producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit). Many worried that The Cure would come out of the recording process sounding, well, processed, but fortunately the noise made on The Cure isn't all that far removed from what the band has been doing for years. The recording sessions, however, were far, far different from what the band had previously experienced, from the good (Robert Smith shared the meaning of his lyrics with the band for the first time, and the whole album was recorded live in-studio) to the bad, which Cure members Simon Gallup and Roger O'Donnell primarily attribute to Robinson's presence.

''It's different for each one of us. Robert and Ross got on very well,'' Gallup begins with decorum. ''I didn't get on with Ross. I personally found his input stifling. I think I can speak for a nice percentage of the band as well — we were sort of brought up in the way where you go into the studio and do your best performance and that's it.''

''I really enjoyed the group (aspect) of it, but I didn't enjoy working with Ross,'' O'Donnell adds. ''I think he was useful in some ways, but there were such cultural divides in approach that I found it difficult.''

''He'd come in and he'd start throwing things around,'' Gallup recalls with annoyance. ''He didn't like us when we played note perfect. He wanted more passion, so he'd actually come up, and if I was trying to play note perfect he'd slam his hands across the bass. More than once he nearly got the bass sideways in his mouth. You couldn't leave the studio and turn that tension off. It was a very traumatic time for some of us, and not one I'd like to repeat.''

''I just don't subscribe to a lot of the things Ross uses as his tools of the trade. All that psycho-babble stuff. I just think it's b.s., really,'' O'Donnell states flatly. ''We've been doing this for long enough, we don't need to be told who we are. We don't need to have people tell us we're The Cure. We know we are. And we can reach within ourselves and find motivation and emotion.''

''Personally I would like in the future for the group to go in without a producer and see what would happen if we were just left to our own devices. I think we've got enough creativity within us to experiment, and I think we could do the songs justice,'' Gallup says. ''At the end of it, they're our songs and we know how they should sound.''

  • Just a heads-up to those of you in Florida, Tennessee and Georgia. There should be articles or interviews in your local papers in the days to come. Please let me know if you see them, and send scans or transcriptions if you can. Those of you in Nashville should especially be on the lookout, as Roger and Simon have done interviews with your local paper, and it's supposed to be even stronger than the comments Simon made in Tutto.

  • Update: Here's one from the Palm Beach Post. And here's one with The Rapture from the Miami Herald. St. Petersburg Times talks to Luke Jenner and Paul Banks.

  • We finally have an official time for The Cure to take the stage at Curiosa - 9:15 each night. So given the 11pm curfew at most venues, The Cure will be doing a 1 hour and 45 minute set. That's official and confirmed, so no more e-mails with theories on how they will still be able to play a 3 hour set. No one wanted to believe me, but I'll forgive you. : )

  • Oh you're not leaving here until you read more reviews of 'The Cure' : )

  • Houston Press

"I found this in an antipodean traveler's magazine here in London (TNT) a few weeks back.

    The Cure
    TNT Magazine July 5, 2004
    by Will Fulford-Jones

And so among the older generation, the struggle for relevance continues. Morrissey appears to have won the battle if not the war, with a mediocre
album whose commercial success has nonetheless re-bestowed on him the iconic status he tossed away around the time of the execrable Maladjusted.  Depeche Mode, on the other hand, are on the fast track to humiliation after a fallow period  punctuated by a couple of utterly desperate solo albums, and while the Pixies' recent shows were belters, there wasn't a new song in sight.

The Cure, of course, haven't been in any way relevant since Dubya's dad was in the White House, Thatcher was in 10 Downing and you were in high school.  But their lucky 13th album comes dressed in a measure of bravado that suggests they've forgotten the past 15 years and have finally made a worthy follow-up to the career-defining Disintegration.  Naming your album after your band is the kind of confidence trick artists pull when they're starting out, not when they're decades into a career.  But following on from the dismal Wild Mood Swings and the not-much-better Bloodflowers, it's no surprise The Cure feel positive about The Cure.

They have, at least in part, producer Ross Robinson to thank.  On paper, it's a highly unlikely marriage:  Robinsons' resume includes work with Korn,
Slipknot and Limp Bizkit, hardly kindred spirits with Robert Smith.  But the choice proves inspired.  The Cure is the most convincingly intense record
they've made since 1989's Disintegration, whether on the thrash of Us or Them or the epic The Promise.  But it's also, conversely, the band at their
most confident and their most relaxed.  If The Cure is a definitive record, it's one by default; if Bloodflowers and Wild Mood Swings sounded like The
Cure trying hard to be The Cure, this time around, they're simply being themselves.  In other words, this is ultimately just another Cure album, but
since we haven't had a good one of those years, it's more welcome than it might have been.  Whether it'll mean a damn thing to anyone younger than the band themselves, who are now 26 years old, is another matter entirely.

    Score:  7 "

  • Chart update for 'The Cure':

  • Italy - Drops from #5 to #13.

    Germany - Drops from #14 to #22.

    and for 'Teotw':

Italy - #19 in the singles chart

    Germany - enters at #47

Edge 102.1 Toronto Thursday 30 - down this week to #15 after last week's high of #10.   But on the bright side, after playing the song the DJ gave a huge spiel about how awesome Curiosa was going to be; then that one of the perks working in radio is the occasional chance to talk with an artist that you've adored for ages and ages, and the incredible experience it was for him to actually talk to *Robert Smith* (he said it 'in bold' teehee) on the phone a couple months back, and telling him that one of the 3 best concerts he'd ever been to in his life was the Disintegration tour.

  • With the way Robert has been bashing The Darkness, you had to know this was coming:

  • "I wonder if anybody else saw this last night...I was flipping through channels at the home of a friend who has cable TV (I do not).  On one of the MTV or VH1 channels at 8:15 pm there was a program showing videos with some young male host and 2 members of The Darkness as guests, I think
one was the lead singer.  So the host says he likes The Cure but he's told the Darkness has something against them.  The main guest proceeds to slag
off Robert, calling him a "creatively a spent force" with too much eyeliner and various other things, because Robert called them a comedy band.  It
wasn't with huge malice but the guy was obviously like a big doofus saying dumb things for the camera...pretty much feeding into any perception that
well, yes they are a comedy band :)

The other bandmember was just sitting there being normal, and commented something along the lines that "the only thing that bothered me was Smith
said in the same interview that everything Queen did was rubbish which is sad because it means he's missed some good music"

Actually the weirdest thing was seeing how OLD these guys are...they looked like they could have been IN Queen!"

  • Just posted an english translation of the Tutto interview. It's mostly Robert, but Simon & Perry get a few words in, including this gem from Simon:

  • "But they don't look eager to speak at all. Mostly Gallup who keeps doing scales on his bass with skulls. But when you speak of Ross Robinson, the producer of the new album, he becomes furious: "Don't tell me he's a great producer, for me he's only been a nightmare. From my mouth will never come out a positive word about him, he's just an idiot"."

Simon is just the best! The absolute heart & soul of The Cure.

  • More rumored shows for the European tour:

  • "A friend just listened to Antena 3 Radio (which btw broadcasted an interview w/ Robert on Saturday night during the festival) that The Cure will come to Portugal in the fall to play 1 show in Pavilhão Atlantico in Lisbon or 2 shows: 1 in the Lisbon's Coliseum and the other in Porto's Coliseum.
    Fingers crossed for the Coliseums!"

  • Curespotting:

  • "Interesting segment on BBC radio five live (English news & sport channel) about why The Cure and other older English acts are doing so
well stateside. Basically two years ago there were no British acts in the American charts and now The Cure, Morrissey and others are doing
very well. The main discussion was the post 911 gloom that is suppose to be in America means that serious or 'gloomy' British music is received
far better than most other 'poppy / happy' music. Some very odd comments made but Simon Mayo (ex radio one DJ) who hosts the programme was very positive about the Cure and almost all the conversation was about Robert Smith and very little about the self obsessed little man from Manchester (or should I say LA). He had also done a trailer with Just Like Heaven before the segment and somebody had emailed wanting to know which Cure song it was. Simon Mayo gave the name and said it was available on their Greatest Hits CD."

    Humo

"Here is the review of "The Cure" from the West Australian newspaper today (22nd July).

A lot of fans parted company with The Cure during the late 1990s following the release of their tepid studio CDs Wild Mood Swings (1996) and
Bloodflowers (2000) and erratic live albums. It's a relief to report that with this adventurous self-titled new album, The Cure are once again on a roll. You can expect to see the mangled hair, mascara and lipstick slash of Robert Smith all over the music papers during the next few months. This new CD is the band at their most passionate, most menacing and most inventive in over a decade. Here, Smith artfully retreads 25 years of old territory. Tracks such as Labyrinth and Anniversary hark back to the depression and claustrophobia of their early singles. Then there are familiar themes about a different life just out of reach ("It's a big bright beautiful world/just the other side of the door" he sings on alt.end), love.hate at arms length ("I don't want you anywhere near me/get your f....ng world out of my head") and delirious whimsy (Going Nowhere) all set to either poppy or morbid new guitar melodies that splutter and fizz.
Giving the tracks a cold, unvarnished sheen, full of echoey drums, mordant piano and buzzy, over-processed guitars, is co-producer Ross Robinson - an unlikely choice if ever there was one, who is best known for working with Nu-metal bands such as Korn and Limp Bizkit.
Smith is in fine voice as he shrieks his way through songs such as Us and Them (where he howls, "You don't want me anywhere near you"). This is a
record that will delight all the diehard fans and, if there's any justice, introduce The Cure to a whole new audience.

  • Some interesting talk about the 'The Cure' and Curiosa on WXRT last night:

  • "On XRT's Sound Opinions show tonight, Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune and Jim DeRogatis of the Sun-Times talked about "The Cure," the tour
and Robert. They both said they heard the tour is not doing so well & DeRogatis said that last time he said that, he "got lots of crap" from the promoters (!).
DeRogatis basically repeated what was in his print review, that this is "Cure by the numbers," "a little snippet here and there of every facet of their career." Kot said he considered himself a Cure fan but wondered why they did this album. DeRogatis said that Bob Smith couldn't stay away from the spotlight, that "if everyone else was doing Cure, he'd rewrite his own songs." Kot said he doesn't think it's a bad record, that Robinson brought out a sense of rage in Smith, but that he, Kot, can't tell if it's manufactured. After playing "Lost," DeRogatis said, "Ain't that just 1984 Cure?" Kot joked that Robinson told Smith, "Think of yourself as Jonathan Davis of Korn." They rate things by saying to buy, burn or trash a cd with DeRogatis saying trash it and Kot saying burn it. Also in there, they laughed about anyone paying $70 to go to Tweeter Center for the show. "

The reason DeRogatis got "lots of crap" was due to him saying that the tour was "in trouble" and implying that it was in danger of being canceled. That's a lot different than just saying the tour isn't doing well. One is a lie and the other depends upon who's spinning the numbers.

Update: You can listen to the show here. It's the July 20th show, segment #5.

  • Don't forget that all HOB venues are having a sale on lawn tickets until sunday, and as Chris pointed out to me, the best deal is for the George, Wa. show. Since all tickets are general admission, that $20 "lawn ticket" could turn into a front row spot if you're willing to get there early enough. If I had bought one of those $50 tickets, I'd be pretty pissed off right now. There's also an AOL 4 Pack for $60, but you need a password. Does anyone have it?

"This review was in the Sydney (Australia) music magazine "The Brag" this week. I heartily concur with everything the reviewer says!

    The Cure
    'The Cure'
    Geffen Records

4 and a half stars out of 5

When a group has been around for 25 years the toughest challenge is keeping things fresh. The Cure's Robert Smith tackled this by bringing in an outside producer for the first time. Ross Robinson really shook things up in the studio, forcing bandmates to spill their guts to one another (often putting long-time friendships under strain). The upheaval was worth it though because the result is this brilliantly terrifying collection of songs. Album
opener 'Lost' draws you in with a murmur that gradually becomes a frenzied scream. Next up is ‘Labyrinth’, the sound of a bad trip where familiar faces turn sinister ("It's not the same you" Smith wails). Most of what follows throws you about like a raft in a raging ocean so that when the mood
lightens into poppier moments ('The End of the World', 'Taking Off') you want to cling to them for dear life. The album closes magnificently too with
scrawling wah-wah guitar tearing a bloody wound across 'The Promise' before the gentler 'Going Nowhere' bids a wistful farewell. There are echoes of
former glories here (1982's 'Pornography' especially) but 'The Cure' still sounds vibrant, scary and most importantly fresh. Midway through Smith
states "I want this to be the last thing we do”. If it is, it's a hell of a way to go.

Listen to this album as it was recorded: very loud and in the dark."

" 'The Cure' got very very positive reviews in both French magazines Rock Mag and Rolling Stone : album of the month !!"

  • "I got ahold of a copy of the U.S. "The End of the World" CD Single. The defect appears at 1:28 through 1:38 in the song "The End of the World"
(music stops and is replaced with "television static" sound). Both "This Morning" and "Fake" play fine, so it may be worth it to get if just for the b-sides for those who don't want to wait. One really cool thing about the CD is that the lyrics to all three songs are printed in the booklet. The only thing that was missing was a remix of the title track, but I knew not to expect that. Both "This Morning" and "Fake" sound fantastic!"

Copies WILL be out this week, but they will have the defect.

    (Thanks Rust)

"I found this in a interview with daryl palumbo, the frontman of head automatica

DM: How did you guys get hooked up with doing a tour with The Cure?

Daryl: The man who produced the two full length Glassjaw albums, Ross Robinson he also produced the new Cure record and my manager works
closely with The Cure as well and manages Ross Robinson(At The Drive In) so our world is running in the same circle as The Cure. The music speaks for itself on the Head Automatica record. I think we exemplify a lot of the essence of The Cure which was dancey-pop. A lot of what we do is dancey-pop with the whole shit kick and bar rock thing too. It just made sense to do that tour. I don't see a tour that would make more sense
especially summer festival tours are where it's at. I've been doing summer festival tours for three years in a row now and I kind of like it.

  • "The Move Music Festival:  They had a short interview with Robert, asking him how he felt about the festival and the other bands playing...  It was after the show, and he commented on how much response they got from the crowd. They also showed the band playing TEOTW, with a split screen of the audience and the band (and they somehow maged to leave out showing Perry's face and they had no footage of Roger at all..but I saw myself in the crowd).  The announcer said they will have another show tomorrow night at 12:20am, with more stuff from the Cure. There wasn't much written about The Cure itself and the article is full of grammatical errors, but nevertheless, here it is:

"The Cure's new self-titled album is sold enough to make this perhaps one of the most promising of the summer packages.  Opening for the band on the main stage will be New York's lush-sounding post-punk outfit, Interpol, along with the Rapture and the fabulous Mogwai.  A second stage will feature screamo band Thursday, ex-Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur, Britian's Cooper Temple Clause and Head Automatica."

  • Cure marathon on WBWC in Cleveland:
  • "My name is Allen Thompson, Music Director here at WBWC radio in Cleveland, Ohio.

Our summer marathon series is in its 24th year and getting stronger every year. Every Thursday during the summer we broadcast 18 hours of a specific artists or group, often featuring more than just the music of the artists, including the rare cuts, live tracks and maybe an interview or even a live phone in from the band/artist. To give a few examples of our successful series, this year’s marathon series has 4 of its 18 broadcasts being held at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame studios. The Fleetwood Mac marathon we just had was held there and we had a special exclusive live phone-in interview with Mick Fleetwood himself.

That is just a little bit of background information regarding the marathon series.

As far as the Cure is concerned…

Thursday, August 5th will be 18 hours of the CURE. On the heels of their latest self titled release, the recent box set, AND the DVD (which is still fresh for them) we think nothing better could come out of this CURE marathon. And how perfect is it that they are embarking on one of the biggest package tours this year, let alone ever. They stop in Cleveland the day before, but nonetheless, the music of the Cure will continue the next day with the 18 hour Cure marathon. And it is a perfect opportunity to get lots of people to listen, head on down to the show, spread the word at the show and sit back and listen the next day.

We hope to have (they are pending, but most likely) giveaways which include copies of the latest self-titled release, copies of the box set, AND copies of the Trilogy DVD – all in addition to the great music of the cure.

We are in Cleveland, OHIO and on 88.3FM (WBWC). If you are not local, the best thing about it is that you can listen LIVE on the internet anywhere in the world at WBWC.COM. We get thousands of online listeners for our marathons and you can either phone in a request 440-826-STING (7846), or email them request@wbwc.com "

The Cure are back with a new studio album after a long pause of four years in length, after having announced their break and after millions of people being disappointed by the fact that one of the most influential bands was going to disappaear. With more than 25 years of history, they have shown taht it is possible to mix innovation, integrity, and intelligence with success among masses. We still can enjoy one of the living legends of modern music. The Cure, history continues."

-in Rolling Stone #20 (france), there's a report about The Cure (not interesting and bad pics), critics on the new album, Fnac promo, and the advert for the album of The A.M. states that their writing is midway the glam of Roxy Music and the new wave of The Cure

  • NME reviews 'TEOTW' single:
  • "After three idiosyncratic Singles Of The Week, your hack is contractually obliged to talk about some trad guitar bands. Acts you might have heard of and give a shit about. So please be upstanding (and down-stooping) for The Cure. It's always baffled NME that substantial numbers of people talk about them in the same breath as The Smiths, and 'The End Of The World' (Geffen) does nothing to check that prejudice. It sounds like a Nirvana b-side with Robert Smith on top. An improvement on the average Nirvana b-side, granted, but hardly 'Inbetween Days', eh Fat Bob?"

  • Bad news for South American fans. Despite all the rumors and stories in the press, there will NOT be any South American shows.

  • New article from The Times Online:
  • July 14, 2004

US teens get down to British glum rockers By Adam Sherwin, Media Reporter (and heaven knows they're miserable now)

THE CURE and Morrissey, veteran purveyors of popular musical gloom, have reversed a transatlantic deficit by taking British music back to the top of America’s charts.

Chirpy Britpop bands failed to make a mark in the charts, which two years ago had no British entries for the first time since the Beatles entered them 40 years ago. But American record buyers have now discovered the maudlin strains of “gothic” rock.

The gloom-rock revival has given Manchester’s tourist trade an unlikely boost and there are also plans to make a film about the doyen of miserable pop, Ian Curtis, of Joy Division.

The Cure celebrated their 25th anniversary with a comeback album which broke into this week’s Billboard Top 100 at No 7, selling almost 100,000 copies without the backing of a hit single.

Morrissey, the king of glum and former frontman of The Smiths, blazed the trail with his You Are The Quarry comeback album, which has sold 250,000 copies there since its release two months ago.

Radiohead, Oxford’s kings of “complaint rock”, are expected to top the charts with their next album, while the angst-filled Welsh rockers Lostprophets have sold 500,000 CDs. The Darkness and Franz Ferdinand have also broken through.

The revival is credited to American teenagers who find the introspection and anti- social traits of British “gloom rock” the perfect accompaniment to adolescent rebellion.

It led to Morrissey fans from Los Angeles and Australia converging in March on the Salford Lads Club in Manchester, scene of a famous Smiths’ album cover, although some were disappointed about the weather — it wasn’t raining.

American dance star Moby is backing a film about Ian Curtis, the Mancunian singer who committed suicide in 1980. New Order, the band which emerged from Joy Division, have reformed and are planning an album and American tour for next year.

The eponymous Cure album, with its far from cheerful titles The End Of The World and Going Nowhere, is an oddity in an American Top Ten filled with “bling” rap and R&B stars.

The album was considered a farewell gesture but the Sussex band led by Robert Smith have now been booked for an American summer tour.

Andy Pemberton, the British-born editor of the New York rock magazine Blender, said: “It is very peculiar. America woke up and found it was living musically in Britain, 1987.

“The nu-metal craze has died but kids still want alternative rock. This kind of British rock has always carried a strong ‘I won’t tidy up my room’ message for moody teenagers.”

Billboard, the American record industry trade magazine, has run an editorial hailing a “new UK invasion”. It said: “What a difference two years makes. In a dramatic turnaround, we in America are seeing and hearing some great music from across the Atlantic.” Rap act The Streets are tipped to be the first British band in the genre to make inroads on the other side of the Atlantic.

American bands are now adopting the sound and styles of 80s British alternative rock. The Killers, from Las Vegas, became a subject for the BBC Two Newsnight Review with their debut album, a seamless blend of early U2, The Smiths and Echo & the Bunnymen.

By contrast domestic music fans are in thrall to US acts. The British Phonographic Industry said that albums by Americans outsold those by homegrown acts for the first time in 2003. Black Eyed Peas and Outkast dominated sales, while the flamboyant New York outfit Scissor Sisters are this year’s bestsellers.

    (Thanks Keith)

"Robert made it on the front page of the Times today although for a weird reason: there was a section dedicated to the current 1980s revival. So, no specific mention of the band in the article, just Robert's face (KMx3 era) together with a picture of Siouxue used as an icon for the 1980s."

As part of the promo it shows a clip from the "A Night Like This" video, but has the "Close To Me" audio. Then as the end it said it will be on every "Wednesday, Thurday, Sunday" (in the voice of are very own Robert Smith from "Friday I'm In Love")... Also the VJ (while talking about the new show), said something like "One of the many bands you'll be seeing alot is The Cure, which will be on tour this summer, the tour is called the Curiosa tour featuring...and then they showed "Siamese Twins" from the Trilogy video...Well even though I have all their DVDs, its always cool to see their videos in heavy rotation on a TV station, the Alternative is actually a pretty good show (anyone that has VH1 Classic, I recomend watching it "

"Some really negative Curespotting from Germany: there is a programme called "Akte 2004" on German TV channel "SAT 1". Basically you can say it's a programme about scandals going on in Germany (consumer swindle, crime stories etc.). In today's broadcast they told the story of a woman who was locked up in a cellar and sexually abused by a married couple for several months. The Cure songs "Descent", "Splintered In Her Head" and "Anniversary" were used as background music. The report was about 10 minutes and during the whole broadcast they used those Cure songs. Apart from the woman's horrorful story a really negative example of using Cure songs on TV. "

"Just check this page : http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17100

This site is about new softwares for MACOS X (mac rules, robert knows that)

Just check the screen shot (http://image.versiontracker.com/scrnsht/32829/154026/966synergy_screenshot.jpg) I think this is just in order to remember that Lovesong (and it was the acoustic one I think) was playing during a Steve Job’s conference introducing a new Itunes !

I have to add that Synergy is a great software !"

  • An update from Ideal Copy:
  • "Idealcopy.com finished shipping all the Pre-Orders for the Japanese and UK versions of the new Cure CD last Wednesday. Thanks to everyone for being so patient and understanding about these things. The tracking information tells us that customers started receiving their CDs from that shipment on the 8th, 9th,10th, and 12th. Let us know ( chris@idealcopy.com ) if you still have not received your copy and we'll pester the post office for ya! And for those of you who haven't ordered yet, all worldwide versions of the new CD are in stock and ready to ship.

We've finally gotten a second confirmation that the the UK 7" for End of the World will be a picture disc. So, we've added it to our site.

And for those of you that have been holding out and trying to sort out the confusion of the various worldwide editions. We recommend the UK CD of the new album plus the US CD single. That's the most economic way to obtain all 15 tracks that are on the vinyl release, but in digital format."

  • A reminder to pick up a copy of Uncut magazine:
  • "I just wanted to let you know that this months edition of Uncut is a Cure special and is on sale now. The issue features an exclusive interview with Robert Smith where he talks about what inspired the new album, talks us through its stand-out tracks and looks back at the band’s amazing history, including his suicidal twenties, his challenging thirties and their triumphant return. The issue also comes with a free Americana CD.

It is an issue any self respecting Cure fan would not want to miss out on!

THE CURE ‘I Should Really Be Dead’ Robert Smith exclusive!

Along with The Smiths and New Order, The Cure dominated the post-punk scene with their alternately bleak and bouncy songs about lovecats and caterpillars, pornography and disintegration, while frontman Robert Smith provided one of the era’s most iconic images with his smudged lipstick and wild hair.

But after becoming one of the biggest bands in the world, with album sales to date in excess of 27 million, and surviving punk, grunge, acid house, Britpop, nu-metal and the usual slew of drugs and self-destructive rock’n’roll behaviour, the band fell foul of damaging inter-band feuding, lawsuits and a loss of musical momentum brought on by Smith’s own lack of inspiration and an increasing sense of disenchantment with what The Cure had become.

By the end of the 90s, they seemed, in fact, a spent force, washed-up, redundant. But five years after Smith announced that they had recorded their last-ever studio album, the band are back with a stunning new album – called, simply, The Cure. It’s a brilliant return to form and a timely reminder of their former greatness.

In Uncut’s exclusive Cure cover story, Smith tells us about what inspired the new album, talks us through its stand-out tracks and looks back at the band’s amazing history, including his suicidal twenties, his challenging thirties and their triumphant return.

Elsewhere in our August issue outspoken film-maker and political activist Michael Moore talks exclusively to us about his controversial new documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11, while Oliver Stone, the equally controversial director of Platoon, Wall Street, Born On The fourth of July, JFK and Natural Born Killers gives us a film by film guide to his colourful career. Also on the film front, we talk to Woody Allen about his new film, Anything Else, and Keith Carradine – cult star of Nashville, The Long Riders and Southern Comfort – looks back at his greatest roles. Elsewhere in the issue, we go suitably psycho with The Cramps and profile the rise and fall of Americana pioneers, Uncle Tupelo.

Completing the Uncut package, there’s a free 15 track CD – The Best Of Americana 2004, featuring exclusive, unreleased tracks by the legendary American Music Club, back with their first new album in 10 years and the seminal Giant Sand, as well as cuts from new albums by Jesse Malin, Josh Ritter, Richmond Fontaine, Jim White, Iron & Wine, Jay Farrar, Explosions In The Sky and more. "

  • Curespotting:
  • "A couple of odd Curespottings to report...

I was reading through the latest issue of TV Guide and it had an ad for the drug Plavix where there is a photo of people in a record store (what that has to do with the drug is beyond me) and there are customers at the counter with their selections and one of the items on the counter is the Join The Dots box set.

I was watching an old rerun of Saved By The Bell (don't ask me why, LOL) and I spotted a Kiss Me... era poster on the wall in Jessie's bedroom."

"FYI: TEOTW is listed as one of the "Tracks to Watch" at Apple computer's "Quicktime News" weekly email newsletter. The article is featured below.

Some critics say the Cure’s new self-titled album is the band’s best ever. Cure singer Robert Smith attributes this to recording the studio album live, as opposed to recording vocals and instrument segments separately, with producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Slipknot).

See Smith at his finest in the band’s new video, “The End of the World”. “The Cure” and many of the band’s earlier albums are available at the iTunes Music Store. "

"Just saw an ad for Phil Jupitus' show on BBC Radio 6, and nearly all the way through it plays Just Like Heaven in the background. The basic jist of it is: Phil wakes up and it's playing on his clock-radio. Then he makes breakfast and it's playing on his kitchen radio. Then he's driving to work and it's playing on his car radio. When he gets to work it's playing in reception. Then he goes into the booth to do his show and he opts to play some random Ska track instead, which I'll assume is what his show is mostly made up of. He does really like that kinda stuff, and has said so many times. I'm not sure what the signifficance of JLH is. Maybe it's showing how happy he is to be working at the radio station, maybe it's just to show the other kind of stuff they play. I have a terrible feeling it might be that he has to put up with stuff he doesn't like on the way to work, but he can play what he does like when he gets there. He didn't look happy, but you could put that down to him not being a morning person."

  • So who's really to blame for the whole 5 different track listings scheme/fiasco? Robert Smith or Jordan Schur. You've heard/read what Robert has said, so let's hear the other side of the story now:
  • "Thought you might find the following of interest. As you might remember from a previous email I sent you, I am not happy with the U.S. version of the new album, especially since I had to buy the vinyl to get the four additional songs (the best of the lot, in my opinion). So......I sent off a letter to Jordan Schur himself (the import-version issue has always been a thorn in my side with many bands). I basically wrote that I thought the whole marketing and distribution of this album was making many true CURE fans upset, etc. etc. I got the following reply back from his assistant today. I then sent him a quick reply:

    From: "Smythe, Zane"
    Subject: Letter to Jordan Schur
    Date: Fri, 9 Jul 2004 12:46:41 -0400

Feel good that your letter will be given to Jordan, however, understand that Robert Smith and the Cure made all decisions as to songs making US domestic album and songs making the Import (and Vinyl) versions. It was the bands decision to make separate versions in the first place. It was and always has been left up to the artist. In fact, Jordan too did not agree with the final song selections for the US version of the album but abided by Roberts sequence as he is a veteran artist who has earned the right to delegate such matters. Thank you for your interest in the Cure, but understand that your information is completely WHACKED! Jordan is maybe a bigger Cure fan than you. He let the band make the record just as they wanted it. He wouldn't have it any other way. Good day.

    Zane
    GEFFEN RECORDS
    2220 Colorado Avenue
    Santa Monica, CA 90404

    Zane:

Thanks for your reply. However, from what I have read, Robert did disagree with at least one decision, which was to not include "Going Nowhere" as the final track on the U.S. version, which would imply that he bowed to label pressure. I have seen other quotes from him concerning the "import issue" where he blames "record company politics" that he feels he has no control over! Other than that, I guess I can't really comment, except for the fact that putting all the songs on vinyl also seems a bit "whacked"!

    Dave Parker
    Burlington, VT

My next reply came within minutes, as follows:

Robert Smith is in a band and had a producer that were in his ear. Jordan did not pick the sequence or songs. Robert signed to Geffen because Jordan is legitimately a huge Cure fan. It is in fact his favorite band of all time. In a perfect world there would be no conflicts between artists and labels, producers, managers, agents, etc. But if you want to know the truth, the Cure had as much free reign to do as they wish with this record as any band maybe ever has. See ya at Curiosa!"

Very interesting, no? Makes you wonder about lots of things, doesn't it?

    (Thanks Dave)

  • Reports on Robert's interviews on 94.9 and WFNX:
  • "In Robert's interview with Haloran on 94.9, Robert talked more about how he doesn't like the Darkness.

Robert says his favorite song on the new album is "The Promise" because he loves playing it live, and he was inspired to write it by playing "The Kiss" live.

Robert talked about his collaboration with Blink 182 (because they're from San Diego), and he said that when he got the call from them, his neice was there, and she liked them a lot. Robert says he liked Blink 182's songs after he "bypassed the lyrical nonsense".

Lol wanted Robert to remix one of Levinhurst's songs, but the new album interfered with his schedule.

Porl played on all of the 'five unreleased songs'

There's a cut of Robert singing "alt.end' with Porl playing banjo.

Robert will watch the other Curiosa bands' sets "every god damned day"

At the end, he mentioned that Scarling would be on the bell too, and that "they're a Goth band. Yeeeaay."

Then went the commercials and "alt.end" was played, followed by "Lost"."

    (Thanks Mykl)

"Just listened to Robert's call on WFNX, I was going to try to type a transcript but then they announced the audio should be up on www.WFNX.com in a few hours. Anyway Robert sounded very jolly. Talked about the genesis of the Curiosa tour and the addition of Scarling from California for the last 8 dates. He said he had the new Interpol album but hasn't had a chance to listen to it yet. Also talked about his involvement in XFM until its buyout; the DJ took the opportunity to invite him to come in to the station when Curiosa swings around here to play whatever he wants for as long as he wants. DJ mentioned at the end that Let's Go To Bed was the first song the station ever played and Robert said that if he had time he would "100%" accept the invitation and would replay it as his opening song.

Note to Robert: Listen to the new Interpol album ASAP, It's fantastic! Not quite as good as 'Turn on The Bright Lights', but that would be hard to top. And yes, I like it more than 'The Cure'. : )

    (Thanks Justin and Ruby)

  • A report on Robert's interview from KRON 4 Morning News yesterday:
  • "I recorded the show this morning and thought I'd fill you in on it. It was a segment call "Love Minute with Liam Mayclem" It looked like Robert was talking from Paris. There was a short Q&A, nothing really new, but here's what they covered.

Liam- What person would you most like to sing with, but never have?

    RS- Stuart from Mogwai.

LM- What song do you most love to sing in the shower?

RS- Do you know I never, ever, ever have a shower. I only ever have a bath.

LM- What do you love to sing in the bath?

RS- I never sing in the bath.

LM- What makeup brand do you love most?

    RS- Mac

LM- What do you love most about being in The Cure?

RS- It allows me to feel something I wouldn't otherwise feel and that I don't otherwise get to feel in what I consider to be my normal life. It allows me to express a part of myself that would otherwise go unexpressed, so it's a fulfilling thing I get from being in The Cure.

LM- What one record and what one book would you most love to take on a desert island with you?

RS- Um, I'd take Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake, and the book I'd take would be The Gormeghest Trilogy by Marvin Pete because it would remind me of a time when the world was a much beautiful place.

LM- Good choice...last one. Who would you take with you to that desert island?

RS- Everyone that I've ever met.

LM- Oh my god, I tell you it better be a big desert island.

RS- Well you didn't say how big the desert island was

The highlight of it, translated to english:

" You have just given a concert to l'Olympia for RTL 2. You n'y had not played since 1982... Robert Smith. Yes, one had also passed there in 1981. J'avais a recording in this concert, which one used a song for republications. I am convincing the d'y group to return for our next round. Rather than to make Bercy, j'aimerais to pass five evenings to l'Olympia. It would be extraordinary l'occasion to give five completely different concerts and to play a hundred titles. "

How incredible would that be!?!?!??! Let's just hope he follows through with this, and maybe chooses a venue a bit more bigger than the Olympia, could you imagine trying to get tix for it with a 2500 person capacity!!!? I hope this happens, I'd give anything for this!!!!!!

  • 'The Cure' enters the Soundscan/Billboard Top 200 albums chart at #7 with sales of 90,705. That's an incredible number! And it sold 527 copies two weeks ago, and 11 the week before that, so that brings total sales to 91,250 so far.

  • And here's a story about it from Billboard:
  • "The Cure scores the second highest-charting album of its nearly 25-year career with its self-titled I Am/Geffen set, which arrives at No. 7 on sales of 91,000 copies. The total also marks the group's best sales week in 12 years. The post-punk act's most successful debut remains the Elektra album "Wish," which bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 1992 with 135,000 copies, and has sold 1.2 million copies to date."

  • "The local Manchester magazine City Life (www.citylife.co.uk) has The Cure on their cover and a two page interview as part of a special issue on the Move Festival. Given the background of interviews we have read in the last month, this one does not add anything to what we already know. The only noticeable part is the "threat" (at least such is to me) that if the wheather is sunny they might dust off more pop songs in the setlist ... But being in Manchester, that is unlikely."

  • Pioneer Press Newspapers

    Virgin MegaMagazine

"Just bought one of the most popular dutch magazins: Nieuwe Revue. They rated the new album 5 out of 5 !!! Here is what they say about the new album:

    The Cure- Geffen/universal

A brand new album from The Cure ! Who expected this? After the pleasant but predictable Bloodflowers (2000) it looked they had a burn out. But that is logical after 25 years. But they pleased us with old material (trilogy dvd and join the dots), you could hear Smith on albums from junkie XL, Blink 182 etc. And Smith was called on of the most influence persons for new bands like Interpol, Hot Hot Heat. But now: On this new album the cure re-invented themselves !! This album is a mix from Three imaginary boys, seventeen seconds, faith, pornography and disintegration. Smith says: ''if you dont like this new album, you dont like us'' . He is right !!!! This is The Cure at their best !!! * * * * * (=5 out of 5!!)

The person who reviewd this for Neuwe Revue is called: Bram de graaf."

"First of all, please forgive me for my poor english. Here is an article published by Veja magazine here in Brazil, which is weekly and almost like Time Magazine. The street date is july, 7th, 2004. Of course, the article is in portuguese and I will try to translate it as good as possible.

    Here it goes:

"The Cure (Universal) - Robert Smith, singer and guitar player of The Cure, is an exotic figure. Rechonchudo*, dresses suits two numbers below his size, paints his face with heavy makeup and sings as he was always crying. Smith is also an inspired composer. In a 28 year career, his band has passed by styles, since goth rock to a very light pop, becoming one of the most influential groups from the international scene. The Cure is the first album with new material from this quintet in four years and it makes a kind of summary of all musical mutations from these english. The End of The World is a highlight among a bunch of excellent songs."

    * It means fatty, little fat, etc."

  • I missed this press release last week, but here it is now:
  • 'The Cure' CD in Stores Today

Curiosa Festival 2004 Kicks Off Next Month

SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Look for the 13th studio album by The Cure to arrive in stores today, June 29th. The self-titled CD was produced by Ross Robinson and is receiving raves from the media. Rolling Stone gave the set a 4 star review, stating, "the new album is their most adventurous and passionate since 'Disintegration,'" while Performing Songwriter says, "Smith seems to have rediscovered his passion as a songwriter and singer, delivering some of his finest work to date." The New York Post gave the disc 3 1/2 stars, "the Cure has made a terrific collection that establishes the band's place in contemporary rock," and the Newark Star Ledger calls it "manna from goth heaven." The Cure was recorded at London's Olympic Studios, with Ross Robinson (Korn, At The Drive In, Slipknot) producing and is on Ross Robinson's imprint label, I Am Records, through Geffen Records.

The Cure is currently overseas performing at various European Festivals while fans in the US wait with anticipation for the Curiosa Festival 2004 to arrive stateside next month. The idea for the festival came last fall after The Cure headlined the KROQ Festival. They decided to spend the coming summer touring the USA with bands they enjoy. The Cure put together a wish list and handpicked the lineup for this summer's Curiosa Festival 2004. The main stage will host The Cure, Interpol, The Rapture and Mogwai on all dates. Second stage acts include Thursday, Muse, Cursive, Melissa Auf Der Maur, The Cooper Temple Clause and Head Automatica. Second stage performers will vary per market throughout the tour; log on to http://www.thecure.com/events to see which bands will be performing on each date.

Tickets are already on sale for the Curiosa Festival 2004, which kicks off July 24th in West Palm Beach, Florida and continues through the end of August (see below for dates and cities). The Curiosa Festival 2004 is a bright light in the summer touring schedule. Unlike the unfortunate weak pattern of many tours this summer, Curiosa is selling tickets at a fast pace. The combination of The Cure's loyal fan base, their new single, anticipation of their album's release and new fans who are being educated to the band by emerging artists who credit The Cure as a major musical influence, have launched this tour with excellent ticket sales and great excitement generated around this touring concept.

The first single, "The End Of The World" is currently at #22 on the Modern Rock radio chart and climbing fast, and the Floria Sigismondi (Incubus, Bjork, Sigur Ros) directed video can be seen on MTV2, Fuse and VH1. The new self-titled disc will be the band's 13th studio record and their first album of new music since 2000's Bloodflowers.

Led as always by lead singer/guitarist Robert Smith, the Cure line-up since 1994 comprises longtime bass player Simon Gallup, guitarist Perry Bamonte, drummer/percussionist Jason Cooper, and keyboardist Roger O'Donnell. The Cure first formed in southern England in 1976 as Easy Cure. In 1978 the 'Easy' was dropped, and The Cure was signed to the Fiction label. In May 1979 their debut album Three Imaginary Boys was released to great acclaim.

Other landmark Cure albums include Pornography (1982), The Head on the Door (1985), Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me (1987), Disintegration (1989), Wish (1992), Wild Mood Swings (1996) and the Grammy-nominated Bloodflowers (2000).

  • Early numbers show that 'The Cure' should debut at #8 on the Soundscan/Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, with first week U.S. sales around 81,000. Very impressive! The most optimistic number that had been going around last week was 75,000. This isn't the final, confirmed number, but it should be pretty close.

  • 'The Cure' debuted at #18 in the official Finnish Top 40 chart.

  • More reviews of 'The Cure' and the Werchter festival:
  • "What did the belgian newspaper say about Werchter and the new album?

"De Morgen" (quality newspaper) gives the album 3 stars (of 5). The performance at Werchter 4 stars (of 5), writing 'The album is not the best they ever made but live (at Werchter) the group was brilliant, as usual'

"De Standaard" (another quality newspaper) writes 'it was a very good concert' and 'Robert is becoming a legend'.

"Het Nieuwsblad" (popular newspaper) gives 5/10 for the new album with this comment: 'He (RS) says it is a new start for the Cure - We say: next time better'. And in a short review of the concert they wrote 'please retire'.

"Het belang van Limburg" (small popular newspaper) enjoyed the concert at Werchter but feels that the new album is only copy-paste from the past albums.

Now I know why I only read quality newspapers ;-) "

TEOTW is up 4 spots, to #12 from last week's #16. It had looked like it was slowing down, but it's jumped up again. 311's Lovesong still nibbles the end of the chart at #30."

  • Curespotting:
  • "I just spotted a Cure commercial on Italian TV! It consisted in a voice that said "the long wait is over! the cure: finally the new album is out: the cure!" over the TEOTW video with the Universal logo learly visible in the upper left corner of the screen. the voice finished with "It's just the end of the world!": how sarcastic... : )"

    (Thanks Pietro)

"Just a quick one to say the album was plugged this morning on mainstream breakfast television in Australia, on a Channel 7 program called Sunrise. They spoke about it a fair bit and played part of TEOTW clip...very strange to see the Cure getting so much exposure during 'prime time' television I must admit!! The album was reviewed very favourably by the music 'expert' guy, although I think the two main hosts didn't quite know what to make of it! I can't ever recall seeing the cure getting plugged like this in Australia...ever."

  • Robert interview in the Illinois Entertainer:
  • "I walked into my local record shop today and right there at the front door were stacks of magazines with The Cure on the cover! The magazine is Illinios Entertainer and its a free music review magazine. The had a nice big picture and 2 page article with an interview from Robert. He talks about remaining relevant today and how being "underground" is not nearly the same as it was 20 years ago. Worth picking up (it's free) if you live in Illinois. Sorry no scans, maybe someone else can get you one?"

  • And an article in the Hamilton Spectator:
  • "Thought I would send you an article that appeared in the Hamilton Spectator this past Friday (July 2). It's from a wire service, so it's probably floating around out there. Nonetheless, I am amazed that our paper even picked it up.

    "There must be a reason . . . "

Robert Smith of The Cure has a compelling reason for why he makes music--but he can't tell you what it is.

It's something he can't put into words.

Smith says he questions constantly why he continues to do it but he's never been satisfied with his answers.

The Cure is releasing an album this week called simply The Cure and Smith says it's his favourite album yet.

He says the band's intent was to make the definitive Cure album, but he can't really say whether it's better than the other albums because it's different.

He says the primary difference is that they recorded the performances live, rather than in pieces and mix them together later.

Plus, he's playing up his pop side.

He says on the last few albums he purposely discarded that sort of music buy producer Ross Robinson encouraged him to embrace his pop sensibilities.

Robert "purposely discarded" his "pop sensibilities" on Wild Mood Swings & Wish? Don't know what to make of that statement."

  • Some speculation on how 'The Cure' will do on the charts next week:
  • From Undercover:

    The Cure Come Back Strong

The Cure's are set to have one of the biggest debuting albums of their career next week with HMV tracking their self-titled album currently at number one in Australia.

The album is their first for I Am Records, the new label founded by Korn/Limp Bizkit producer Rich Robinson.

The first single from the album 'The End Of The World' is currently in the modern rock Top 20 in the USA.

    From Reuters:

The Cure's self-titled set (Geffen/Interscope), its first album of new material since 2000, has a shot at the top 10 in the range of 65,000 to 75,000 units. Included in that number will be fewer than 1,000 that were ordered through Ticketmaster with concert tickets sold over the Internet, sources say.

So even though it might crack the Top Ten, there's probably no significant sales increase over Bloodflowers, which sold 70,953 copies in it's first week and debuted at #16. But if sales for 'The Cure' can top that BF number, it will be the first Cure album to increase sales over the previous album since 'Wish' in 1992. After that point, each Cure album has sold less than the previous one, so it would be a nice trend to see reversed.

  • More photos and another report from the Paris press conference:
  • "A few news from the press conference gived in Paris today between 3PM and 4PM (Paris time) and at which I had the chance to be. As it was already posted, Roger is better now, he almost threw up on stage yesterday in Werchter. Robert said that actually all the four other members got sick this week except him. So that he had to stay apart from them. It seems that Jason was not feeling right today according to Robert. It seemed (not confirmed directly by Robert) that The Cure had a stay in Paris those past days and that they moved from there to Werchter at least. But (Robert had confirmed that) Jason, Perry, Roger and Simon had left Paris earlier today. (They're probably around Toulon now for the show at the Gaou tommorrow).

About his solo album, Robert said "I would do it", saying that was difficult to find a way, but he still wants to make one some day.

About the 2 cd-set re-release of the albums, he confirmed the first 4 were on their way and that he had found some really strange material and original tapes for them. Some tapes are still to be listened through. And he added those re-release won't probably occur before october.

About Curiosa festival he said he asked PJ Harvey to come with them but that she had already planified some stuffs on her own with her tour and everything. And about The Rapture for instance, Robert said he could not see in their music what sounded like The Cure but that he totally connected with the sensibility of their music.

Apart from that, he did not really said anything really new. While obviously tired, he was very nice, patient and talkative. He even agreed to be photographed while at first he asked the press attachés that he did not want any camera (video and photo) because of him being so tired.

The press conference lasted for around 45 minutes. For the French readers they will be a publishing of the interview (plus pictures) on http://www.musiqualite.net/ very soon, but probably not before the beginning of next week.

A review of the Olympia, and reviews plus pictures of the Gaou festival and Aix-les-Bains festival will also be published online on http://www.musiqualite.net/. I'll try to post the entire interview of the press conference here next week but i lack time right now to transcribe everything. "

  • And a translation of the Muzikalia review:
  • The Cure – The Cure

Nothing but 26 years ago was when The Cure debuted with Three Imaginary Boys (78). Three decades of ups and downs, with the 80´s as their golden age, and the unnoticed 90´s, except the fabulous Wish (92). In 2000 the band were back to their roots to show us the dark Bloodflowers, that as their leader said, it was to complete the dark trilogy, with the essentials Pornography (82), and Disintegration (89), forgetting Seventeen Seconds (80) by mysterious reasons.

Four years have passed since then and after glorious concerts, rumors about their break up, a Greatest Hits album, a B-Sides collection, and a new discography contract, The Cure are back with the collaboration of Ross Robinson (Blink 182, Slipknot) – who seem to have given hope back to Robert Smith – to hand us the homonymous The Cure, that, without doubt, is an album much better than expected, which brings back the best Cure from the last 15 years.

This album is so eclectic as Kiss Me kiss Me kiss Me (87) or Wish (92), and in which the best sides of The Cure. Smith has already said “If you don’t like the album, then you don’t like us”. In it there is room for everything: from the agonazing crescendo of the opening song, “Lost”, of the beautiful darkness which is show in “Going Nowhere”, or “Labyrinth”, this last in line with “Burn”, the song they composed for the original soundtrack of The Crow (95). The great pop from “Taking Off”, (which reminds to “Just like Heaven”, “Mint Car”, or “A Pink Dream”), or the density from “Anniversary” – electronic hybrid between Joy Division and an old song such as ”Lament”. From the rest of the songs, we can highlight the energy from “Before Three”, the rage from “Us or Them” (how much time has passed since we didn’t listen to such a loosen Smith? ) of the 10 intense minutes from “The Promise”.

In the other side from the balance there are the predictable ones “The End of the World” and “Alt.End”, which despite being similar to “In Your House” in the gitars, it is much empty, or ”Never”, such a nonsense typical of the worse Smashing Pumkins, which don’t darken the album as a whole at all.

“The Cure” is a good album, and we value the dignity of their authors on having reached the point in which they are, being loyal to themselves, enjoying it, and for making us enjoying it too. This is something that many of their coetaneus would want.

    Written by Manuel Pinazo

  • New article from Reuters, featuring comments from everyone's favorite guy, Jordan Schur:
  • The Cure for What Ails -- New Album, Major Tour

Wed Jun 30, 8:31 PM ET

    By Tamara Conniff

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - This year has marked quite a U.S. comeback for British goth-punk band the Cure.

In May, the band headlined the second day of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., performing for more than 50,000 fans. Cure founder singer-guitarist-songwriter Robert Smith has lent his vocals to songs by Blink-182, Tweaker and Junior Jack, and 311's cover of the Cure's "Love Song" is a radio hit. The Cure also has a new record deal with I Am Records/Geffen Records and released its 13th studio album, "The Cure," on Tuesday.

Smith says the turning point in his post-millennium career was meeting rock producer and I Am Records founder Ross Robinson in 2002. Neither has been the same since.

"I truly trust Ross," Smith says. "I let him take control and guide me -- something I've not done since the early days. I think it's the best (album) we've ever done."

Smith says Robinson also gave him the space to get back in touch with his pop/goth sensibilities and encouraged him to pen the album's first single, "The End of the World."

"We've always been not quite mainstream," Smith says. "Which I think has served us well."

Robinson, a longtime Cure fan, says he often drew inspiration from Smith's work while producing such acts as Korn, Limp Bizkit and At the Drive-In.

"We're all starving to death to feel heart and beauty and love," Robinson says. "We're starving, and that's what Robert does. People forgot -- especially with the industry scrambling to figure out the formula when there isn't a formula. It's beauty and love coming through the invisible as music, and he's the very best at it. Nobody's better. That famine is being fed through Robert on this record."

Smith says that Robinson inspired him to be less self-conscious onstage. "He really reawakened my love of performing," Smith says.

The Cure this month will embark on its first major U.S. tour since 2000's outing in support of "Bloodflowers." In the past few years, the band has been a continuous touring presence in Europe, but Smith says, "America is such different scale." The 16-date Curiosa Festival 2004 tour, which kicks off July 24 in West Palm Beach, Fla., is expected to draw huge crowds. Smith hand-picked all the bands to join the festival, which will include Interpol, the Rapture, Mogwai, Muse, Thursday, Cursive and Melissa Auf der Maur. (The only band that declined the invitation to join was Bright Eyes because leader Conor Oberst refuses to play Clear Channel-supported shows.)

"These bands don't all sound like the Cure," Smith says. "But they do have the same passion and emotion for music that we do."

Jordan Schur, co-president of Geffen Records, says the Cure is as relevant today as it was when the band burst onto the scene in the late 1970s. "Robert is as cool as he's ever been," Schur says. "He's brought great vision and incredible energy to this (album). He's my hero; (the Cure's) music is the soundtrack to my life."

Schur, a longtime friend of Robinson's from their Korn and Limp Bizkit days, inked a deal with I Am Records last year when Robinson left his venture with ArtistDirect.

"I always believed in Ross," Schur says. 'We've been looking to be in business for so long, and the opportunity finally arose."

When asked if 15 years ago Smith would have envisioned himself where he is now, he laughs and says: "I thought I would be domesticated by now. But we just kept going."

Nah, it would be way too easy to say something here. : ) Good for Bright Eyes though!
